Gouvia (Yacht Marina)

Gouvia, a small former fishing village has been developed throughout the last four decades into a modern holiday resort. Ideal for couples and families visiting the island of Corfu, it provides an up to date and secure place for vacation. The resort is located 7km north of Corfu town, on the east coast and has been popular since the 70s to people coming from most of the European countries. Gouvia is set on a bay and offers a pebble beach and large variety of hotels, bars, restaurants and shops. In Gouvia there is the largest marina of Corfu island. Gouvia position in a natural harbour made it an ideal location for a shipyard, this was exploited during the Venetian occupation, when they built their arsenal in the village. The remains of it today are notable in the area. One of the most picturesque spots is the Church of Ypapanti, which pokes out into the water on a peninsula-style island. Finally in Gouvia is the Serbians Monument, at the place where the Serbian allied army disembarked from 6 Jan. 1916 to 5 Apr. 1916.

Major festivals and feasts in Gouvia

17 July – St Marina celebration in Ypapanti church

Mid of June – All Saints celebration in front of central Gouvia church

First or second weekend of September – “Dancing Paths” Folklor e festival

General Information & Marina Services

Gouvia Marina, the first privately owned marina in Greece, is situated about 6 kilometres from the town of Corfu and 7 kilometres from the International Airport. For many years seamen considered the harbour and the bay of Gouvia as a natural link between the Adriatic and the Mediterranean Sea as well as a port of call, where they could sail in, to repose, enjoying the climate and the beauties of the island. In the 17th century Venetian sailors selected the area of Gouvia as an ideal location for creating a naval station and shipyards, remains of which have survived in the region. The tradition has been maintained to this day as sailing yachts and motor boats from all over the world arrive at Gouvia Marina, enjoying the beauties of the sea and the environment, the cool breeze and the beautiful island of Corfu.

The modern and efficiently run marina has first-class facilities and friendly, experienced staff. The total capacity is 1235 berths, on both permanent and floating pontoons, while there are dry dock facilities for approximately 520 boats. Moorings are available for boats up to 80 meters long and with 5.5 meters draught, for short or long term periods.

The marina operates all year round on a 24-hour basis. Two green and two red lights mark the approach channel to the marina and all  boats are required to call the marina on VHF channel 69 in order to receive instructions. The marina's boat and personnel will provide all necessary assistance. After your arrival, you have to check in at the reception office where you will also be informed about all the details concerning your stay.

CORFU – DAY AND NIGHT, SUMMER AND WINTER

Corfu ( Greek name is Kerkyra ) is the main island of the 7 Ionian Islands – placed on the  westernmost part of Greece,  between the Ionian and the Adriatic sea. There are many ports, harbors and marinas. The best.known and largest is Gouvia Marina, the most wildly romantic is St.Stefanos, and the most special is the Sailing Club ( IOK) in the capital of the island. But all of the harbors and marinas are the ideal locales of life of sailors.

Climate: Mediterranean. Winter is mild and rainy, summer is pleasantly warm, heatwave is expected only in August. Corfu is the most green island in Greece: in contrast the other, barren and rocky Greek islands, Corfu is full of olive-, citrus-, fruit-trees, groves and wildflowers.

corfu superyacht marina

Corfu island’s capital is Corfu town . It’s world famous old town is the UNESCO World Heritage site. Corfu town is placed in peninsula, protected by two Venetian fortresses, it is a cozy and safe port for small fisher boats, huge ocean liners, yachts and sailing boats. Corfu town is a lively place in winter and summer, night and day, the visitors find countless tavernas, restaurants, bars, cafes, clubs – and hospitality, Greek flavors and Mediterranean feeling.

(My recommendation:  whenever you take a walk in Corfu town –  always take a swimsuit with you !  Swimming at the Garitsa bay in the summer heat, or relaxing in the lukewarm sea and listening a night concert at the Old Fortress and admiring the panorama of the beautifully lit old town  – these are  unforgettable experiences.)

corfu superyacht marina

Everybody will find the right beach, shoreline and ports. Northwest: infinitely long sandy beach, north and northeast: cooler water and rocks, east: small pebbles shorelines.

corfu superyacht marina

If the sailors need tranquility and encounter with nature : sail to sheltered bays of Agni, Koloura, Kalami (NE) , and it is worth paddling ashore to have a great dinner at the traditional tavernas. Shopping, walking, bustling nightlife ? Visit the charming Kassiopi, the elegant Nissaki or Barbati: you will not be disappointed.

The northwest coast is more windy and cooler. Sheltered harbors, fabulous bays wait for the sailors at Paleocastritsa, St. Stefanos. Maybe Paleokastritsa is the most famous landmark of Corfu – on the top of its hill there is a monastery you must visit it. You will admire the breathtaking panorama.

East coast: visit the holiday villages, cozy fishing villages ( Benitses, Boukari, Moraitika, Messonghi ) and spend wonderful days and nights in Corfu town.

I have lived on this island for over 20 years : I know it, I love it. The people asked me countless times why is it good here. My answer is: at all time and everywhere you can discover little miracles, and secrets of the island you never find in the tourist guides. You can not get bored of the walks at the old town, the charming traditional old mountain villages, the hidden little bays, and the blue sea.

The sailor is free, adventurous, brave character: I am for sure that Zeus and Poseidon created Corfu for the sailors. I wish you to fall in love with our island, let your arrival be the beginning of an eternal  love.

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

Sailing Levels

Winds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Good for beginner or intermediate sailors. Line-of-sight navigation but basic knowledge of charts and ability to plot your position required.

Corfu Sailing Journal by Kali, Nautilus Yachting

Flying on what felt like the very first flight from Gatwick airport, our three-hour Easyjet flight to Greece meant that we arrived in Corfu just before lunch, giving us the entire afternoon to get prepped and ready for the week. Stepping out of the airport into what felt like UK rain and drizzle we were not sure how the week was going to fair.

A swift 20 minute journey later we arrived at Gouvia Marina, which certainly brightened the mood. The Marina is a short distance from Corfu town but easily one of the biggest marinas I have seen in a while. A sea of over 1000 masts, a supermarket, a pool, plus restaurants and bars, all easily accessible from the yacht. Gouvia is certainly somewhere you could lose a few hours waiting for your yacht to be readied, which we did happily. A little before 5pm we met Helen, our trusted skipper for the week, and stepped aboard our SO449 that would be our home on the water for a week.

Day 1 - Gouvia Marina to Benitses (10nm)

Looking to get as involved as possible, I joined Helen for a catch up on the week's plans. The weather forecast for the next few days looked to involve strong winds and swell. Rather than have a full on battle for our first day, we instead decided to head to Benitses, a small town only 10nm away with a very new and well-protected marina.

Helen safely took us out of the marina and thankfully the very British-style drizzle we were encountering seemed to stay over Corfu Town and we sailed into a great big blue sky and 25-plus degrees of heat. Now in open water, I happily had the opportunity to take the helm and sail us towards Benitses before our Helen took over the complicated mooring, spinning the boat on a sixpence and mooring us safely for the evening.

Gouvia Marina to Benitses (10nm)

Day 2 - Benitses to Plataria (17nm)

What goes down, must come up.

We had a very relaxed start to the day with a few pastries from a nice little bakery in the village but the relaxation did not last long! Last night's planning suggested a casual four hour sail across to the mainland so after a quick briefing from our skipper we set passage out of the marina and headed towards Plataria - a simple sail!

In reality, we had 20kts of wind on the nose, six feet of swell and what seemed like colossal waves for an amateur crew. Sailing on our second reef for over 30nm meant some real sailing today! We ended up with a six hour sail, speeds of up to 8 knots and the kind of weather usually found in the Dodecanese rather than the Ionian. For most, this was a pleasant surprise, however some of the crew did not take well to some fantastic sailing conditions!

Once we got through it, the calm waters of Plataria felt like a million miles away from the day's adventures. We enjoyed a well-deserved meal in Olgas Tarverna sharing stories of how brave we were on today's sail and thanking all the Gods for having a professional skipper to lead the way!

Benitses to Plataria (17nm)

Day 3 - Plataria to Syvota (7nm)

A new day, a new beginning. With yesterday's marathon behind us, we opted to have a very relaxing day today. After a quick conversation with our skipper, we updated the plans and created a new itinerary of a short sail followed by a day of rest.

The plan was that today's sailing would be more "Ionian" and a casual hour or two at sea. To get over the high jinx of yesterday's sailing our skipper encouraged my son onto the helm and he took to it like a duck to water. With just a quick informal lesson on how to helm, yesterday's seasickness went out of the window and he confidently took us to Syvota, a real gem of a town.

Syvota itself has restaurants, shops and tavernas lining the town key as well as secluded beaches, all within walking distance. Syvota felt like a place where you could easily spend a week's holiday.

Plataria to Syvota (7nm)

Day 4 - Syvota

We spent the day enjoying Syvota, exploring the beaches, 'testing' the tavernas in the town and living the high life. One side of the town has a long beach and due to the time of year, we had the beach all to ourselves.

In the late afternoon we wandered back to town and watched the yachts come in. Sitting with a gelato and watching everything from the shore, you can appreciate how much work the skipper does getting the boat in safely at the end of the day.

In the evening we strolled over the hill to Syvota Mourtas and enjoyed some fine dining in a five-star restaurant before retiring to the boat for the night.

Syvota

Day 5 - Syvota to Igoumentitsa Creek (10nm)

Waving goodbye to a town that I could happily return to at a later date, we carried on our sailing adventures. Following the calm sleep on anchor in Plataria on Monday night, we spoke to Helen and requested another night swinging on anchor. Knowing the area well, she recommended a small creek slightly off the beaten track. We restocked the galley ready for our night under the stars and set off for the quiet bay.

Igoumenitsa Creek had a precarious entrance but under the watchful eye of Helen, we pootled into a stunning little inlet. The advantages of sailing in October became very apparent as we dropped the anchor and noticed we were the only boat in the anchorage giving us plenty of space to swim and zip about in the tender.

As sunset approached we sat in the serenity of what felt like our own private bay, listening out for the sound of fish jumping out of the water catching flies. With this being our final night, we cooked a huge feast of almost everything we had on board and tried our hardest to finish all the gin and wine we had bought, before going to sleep under a cloudless sky.

Syvota to Igoumentitsa Creek (10nm)

Day 6 - Igoumenitsa Creek to Gouvia Marina (18nm)

Our final day and our journey back "home". After the strange weather from the opening day, our final day was the polar opposite. It was late October and we were motoring back to Corfu in 27-degree heat, not a breath of wind and water as smooth as glass!

We started the week as three fresh-faced sailors, but on this return leg our confidence had grown enough for us all to take turns on the helm. We enjoyed a final lunch on the water before heading into the marina where we happily reminisced about our week, whilst scrolling through a few hundred photos and videos!

We had a fabulous week on the water with amazing food, lots of laughs and a massive sense of achievement - leaving everyone in the group thinking "when are we doing this again?"
