Mediterranean Sailing tips

Mediterranean Sailing tips

This time 12 Knots invites you to discover the most traveled  part of the world – a glorious journey around the shores of the  Mediterranean Sea.

It is a long, lively, occasionally challenging and endlessly  fascinating trip off from Gibraltar, one of the fabled Pillars of  Hercules, up the coast of Spain, along the Riviera, to the islands of  Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, then Croatia, the Greek islands and way-way  to Istanbul in Turkey.

Sailing along the coastlines as wild and diverse as anything you  encounter before will give you a real insight in this world – while  probing through layers of traditions and culture, ancient and modern,  rich and poor, fake and authentic.

Be open to surprise and serendipity, be willing to get lost and appreciate each routine’s uniqueness.

The Mediterranean Sea is an intercontinental one that separates  Europe from Africa. The Strait of Gibraltar connects it to the Atlantic  Ocean on the west; the Dardanelles and the Bosporus – to the Black Sea  on the east; and long man-made Suez Canal – to the Red Sea in the  south-east.

Chartering a boat in the Mediterranean

Renting a yacht in the Mediterranean is a  great alternative to a standard cruise on a liner – this way you will  feel the true freedom and get unique experience as a real traveler!  Spain, Croatia, Italy, France, Montenegro, Turkey, Greece, Malta -  wherever you want to go, 12 Knots will help you to charter a yacht that  will definitely meet your needs, type of vacation and budget. "The cradle of civilization" offers a huge number of attractions.  Secluded bays with paradise beaches and lively cities, fishing villages  with colorful boats and modern marinas filled with premium yachts. There  is no other part of the world where you may find such a great  gastronomic, architectural and nature diversity.

Renting a yacht in the Mediterranean Sea will give you  chance to see many countries of this area in a different perspective.  Instead of visiting standard touristic places you’ll be able to visit  wide variety of little-known places far from the standard routes. For  example, the Cote d'Azur is not only the luxurious ports of  Saint-Tropez, Monaco and Nice with luxury restaurants, casinos and a  great concentration of mega yachts. Here you may also find little  fishing villages, where in a family restaurant you can dine on freshly  caught fish with white or rose wine. Spain is not only Ibiza discos and  beaches of the Costa Brava, full of tourists and pareo vendors, but also  quiet harbors with amazingly clear water, where you can enjoy unusual  solitude.

Rent a boat and do what you want

Mediterranean yacht charters is the opportunity to do what you  want. Every day you can taste local versions of Mediterranean dishes  that differ in terms of cooking method, spices and sauces. Without any  haste, you may stroll among the ancient ruins and climb the walls of  beautifully preserved ancient fortresses, offering spectacular views on  the sea - exactly the same as hundreds of years ago.

Your  vacations will be much more interesting if you choose to rent a yacht.  The Mediterranean coast length is over 40 thousand km, 21 countries and  three continents with different coastal relief. Here you can find almost  everything: volcanos, starch-white and coal-black lava sand, pebbles  and shell rocks.

For photographers, video bloggers and movie  lovers, renting a yacht in the Mediterranean also gives the opportunity  to see a lot of interesting things – in a quite unique way. Among the  places that must be visited is the Italian town of Portofino, where  Antonioni / Wenders shot one of the episodes of the romantic drama  “Behind the Clouds”. Also don’t miss the Amalfi Coast, which is often  served as a backdrop for films about beautiful life. One of the most  scenic views here is Positano village with its colorful houses that  cascade down right to the blue water.

Those who love nature and  silence should include in the list one of the secluded Greek islands  with bicycles and boats. You can rest peacefully on some beaches of the  eastern coast of Sicily, and find a great combination of warm turquoise  of the sea and white fine soft sand. If you are getting bored with peace  and tranquility, you may always get off the anchor and set up sails to  the place where life is in full swing - like Ibiza, in Barcelona,  ??Monaco.

Benefits of sailing in the Mediterranean

One of the main features of the Mediterranean region is its  relative compactness and high dencity of different attractions. History  and architecture, museums, nature, beach attractions and water sports,  shops, amusement parks - all of these can be in just one sailing  vacation.

Mediterranean bareboat yacht charter gives you a  chance to visit places that are almost inaccessible from land, because  they have neither a parking lot nor a safe trail to the sea. You may  find plenty of secluded coves in rocky shores of Turkey and Greece,  where every spot can be your personal secret place, whit not risk of  finding another company.

Dazzling white streets of the small  coastal towns in Greece or red tiled roofs of Montenegro, contrasting  with the huge mountains. Malta’s cultural microcosm, where European,  Arab and African intertwined, and where, in addition to the magnificent  Gothic and Baroque buildings, there are prehistoric sanctuaries, the  secrets of which have not yet been solved. Turkey, with places not  touched by resorts, where you can clearly feel the breath of antiquity.  All this can be points of interest during your yacht charter in the  Mediterranean Sea!

For active travelers who value independence  versus staying in one spot, decision to rent a boat in the Mediterranean  Sea is definitely a solution. If you plan an ordinary trip with an  accuracy of one day and hotels bookings in advance, then yacht gives you  a chance to improvise and change your plan. Renting a yacht is two in  one option: accommodation and transportation at the same time.

It is not surprising that Mediterranean yacht charters are in great  demand and one of the most popular sailing destinations offered by 12  knots. Sailing in this region is a dream for many people, while we make  it a reality. We offer bareboat and crewed yachts for charter from  classic Turkish gulets to modern sailing boats and premium yachts. Our  manager will give detailed information each boat so that you can make  the right choice.

Above all we also can help with itinerary and  destination ideal for your needs and time of the year. For example, if  you are looking for diving or other waters sports, we will tell you the  best spots for underwater attractions and the best way to get there.  Where to find the most beautiful views? Which cities should go to catch  spectacular holidays? Where are the best water parks, shopping centers,  casinos, discos? Answers to all these questions will help create a  unique roadmap.

Mediterranean Yacht Charters: The Full Price List

cost of a mediterranean yacht charter

A yacht charter in the Mediterranean is a great way to delve into the wonders of this breathtaking region, where endless summer sunsets await and a rich tapestry of culture beckons at every turn.

Knowing the true price of a yacht charter in the Mediterranean isn’t always as simple as it should be. The region is made out of different countries with different rules, VAT and costs of living, and the same yacht can be chartered at a very different price depending on several variables that you should be aware of.

Here is a breakdown of the prices to expect if you want to rent a boat in the Mediterranean, along with some insider tips from us if you want to sail in the region “on a budget”.

What are the factors that influence the price of a yacht charter in the Mediterranean?

It’s important to know the different factors that can influence the price of a yacht charter in the Mediterranean region. With all the variables clearly laid out, you will be able to make more informed decisions and play with one variable over the other to adjust your yacht charter to your budget .

The type of yacht you want to charter in the Mediterranean: a yacht is a broad word covering a wide range of budgets

The yacht you are going to charter is the variable that will likely influence the most the total cost of your yacht charter.

The Mediterranean region has a very broad selection of yacht available for rental, and the price range is simply huge: from 700€ a week for the cheapest bareboat rentals up to more than 1,000,000€ a week for the biggest superyachts.

In most cases in the Mediterranean, the bigger the yacht, the higher the price . Longer yachts have more crew to operate them, use more fuel and are generally more high maintenance than the smaller ones. The APA of a yacht rental is directly proportional to its base-fee, so be prepared to have a higher APA with a bigger yacht.

The demand for specific yachts can also significantly increase the price of the yacht. This is especially true for bigger / historical yachts that have their followers, and less the case for bareboat rentals.

The destination (and country) of your Mediterranean yacht charter: a big influence on the final price

Where you are going to sail your yacht has a big influence on the total cost of your charter. It would be a mistake to think of the Mediterranean region as a place where prices are more or less unified.

There are big price differences between Mediterranean countries due to various reasons:

  • Regulations (VAT, taxes…) that influence transactions in general or sailing in particular
  • Labour costs : minimum salary can be multiplied by 5 depending on your country around the Mediterranean belt
  • Demand : some destinations are in very high demand with very limited offer, some don’t have this issue
  • Exclusivity : some parts of the Mediterranean are more luxurious, more private and more “selective” than others, which makes the prices go up

So, even if you spend most of your time onboard your chartered yacht, the rental price of the same boat in different countries can vary quite significantly as moorings, taxes, staff and on-land activities in general won’t necessarily cost the same.

How luxurious you want your yacht charter to be: an important variable for the final price

The base fee of a yacht charter usually only covers the cost of chartering the yacht itself. You need to add the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) on top of it to cover the variable costs.

The APA is directly proportional to your yacht (so usually the bigger the yacht the higher the APA), but also to how luxurious you want your charter to be.

If you want to eat luxurious food and high-end alcohol during your yacht rental, expect to pay a little more than if you go for simplicity.

To know more about the price of chartering luxury yachts, we highly recommend you to read “ How much does it cost to rent a yacht? “, or to use our calculator below to get a free estimate based on a yacht you’ve seen and/or your budget.

The season: the price of yacht rentals aren’t stable throughout the year in the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean is a very seasonal region , and the yacht rental market isn’t an exception.

The Summer season is by far the most popular time to discover the Mediterranean area. In consequence, people come from all over the world to travel to the France Riviera, Italy, Greece or the Balearics during that time of the year. Most prices are at their highest during Summer: hotels, plane tickets, but also yacht rentals.

The shoulder season , which is from April to June and September to October, is also a popular choice. The weather is usually pleasant, the crowds on the lower end, and prices are more budget-friendly. A good “budget vs weather” compromise.

Winter in Europe is by far the lowest season in the Mediterranean, and the best one to enjoy the biggest deals if you are not hunting for the hottest temperatures and sunniest weather.

The below example with Greece is a great illustration of weather, season and hence price variability of yachts charters in the Mediterranean.

Meteo in Greece during the year

How late (or early) you are when you are booking your yacht: something you shouldn’t sleep on in the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean region has the same issue as most yachting hotspots in the world: the boats available for rental are in limited numbers . On top of it, as we previously mentioned, the season is much shorter in the Mediterranean than in other regions such as the Caribbean.

It can therefore be wise to book a lot in advance of a yacht charter in high season if she is usually in demand, as the chances of her being booked at your dates are high.

On the other hand, last minute bookings are also a way to enjoy good deals with the boats that haven’t been booked or that got cancelled. You sacrifice being picky on the boat you rent and on planning in advance your trip, but you might save up a little in return.

What is the minimum price to rent a yacht in the Mediterranean region (yacht base-fee only)?

Now that we have the variables out of the way, here are some of the minimum prices you can expect for yacht charters in the Mediterranean region. The prices below do not include expenses and APA.

1,200€ / week : the minimum price for bareboat yacht rentals in Mediterranean

Bareboat charter

If you have the qualifications to sail a boat yourself without a skipper, you can start renting a yacht from 1200€ / week in the Mediterranean region.

At this price, you usually have a simple sailboat for up to 6 passengers, and you are more likely to be in the Eastern regions of the Mediterranean, such as Croatia or Turkey, although you can still find great deals at very similar costs in more expensive countries such as France.

2,500€ / week: the minimum price to rent a yacht with a skipper in the Mediterranean region

If you need an experienced skipper to safely sail your yacht during your charter, the minimum price is around the 2,500€ / week throughout the Mediterranean region.

The price of the skipper can vary significantly depending on the country and the season you are sailing. Some Mediterranean countries may have cheapear labour costs than others, but the demand can influence the price both up and down.

8,000€ / week: the starting price for fully crewed yachts in the Mediterranean

For a luxury yacht with a full crew in the Mediterranean region, the low end price is around the 8,000€ mark per week for sailing yacht and sailing catamarans.

Above 15,000€ / week , you start to be in luxury yacht charters territory, with longer yachts and/or more staff to add luxury to your experience.

The cost to charter superyachts in the Mediterranean starts at around 50,000€ / week with no upper limit.

Our tips to decrease the total cost of your yacht charter in the Mediterranean

There are several ways to decrease the total cost of your yacht charter in the Mediterranean region. Here are some tips.

Pick a Mediterranean country where the cost of living is on the lower end

The cost of living can influence the total budget of your sailing holidays. It can therefore be smarter to pick one of the cheap Mediterranean countries for your yacht charter, especially if you plan on spending a lot of time on-land, which can increase your mooring fees and activities prices.

Most affordable regions in the Mediterranean for yacht rental

Here is a list of regions where the cost of living is lower and/or that are less popular than most famous Mediterranean yachting hotspots:

  • Most of Turkey
  • Most of Croatia
  • Greece (especially outside the main touristic islands)

cost of a mediterranean yacht charter

Expensive regions in the Mediterranean that you might want to avoid if you are on a budget

The following regions in the Mediterranean tend to be the most expensive, which can get even worse in the highest season:

  • Cannes, Nice, St Tropez and other famous cities of the French Riviera
  • Barcelona and Marbella in Spain
  • Ibiza and the rest of the Balearics (Spain)
  • Venice in Italy

Charter a yacht in the Mediterranean during the shoulder season to get great deals

A great way to save money but still enjoy the wonders of the Mediterranean region is to rent a yacht during the shoulder season.

The further you are from the main summer months (July-August) and the likelier you are to find big discounts. Keep an eye on our exlusive offers if you are looking for a good deal.

Many yachts are simply never rented out during winter and the months around it, and so their owners are willing to discount their prices drastically for the adventurous sailor.

The shoulder season in the Mediterranean, especially May-June and September-October, is a time where the weather is still very nice, most tourists are gone and the price much more affordable. You do need to sacrifice a bit of heat and sun, but the gamble usually pays off!

A big yacht isn’t always better than a small yacht

If you want to charter a yacht on a budget, do not feel shy to go towards smaller yachts.

Bigger yachts aren’t always the answer to everything. Sure, they are usually more comfortable and more luxurious than the smaller ones, but that doesn’t mean you should sleep on shorter boats.

The sailing feelings can be very thrilling and sometimes even more intense on a smaller yacht than on bigger ones. A small group of friends or family members and an experienced skipper is usually more than enough to be a guarantee to have the time of your life during a yacht charter around the Mediterranean.

cost of a mediterranean yacht charter

There is no “one size fits all” budget when it comes to yacht charters prices in the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean is a huge sailing playground covering several countries with different regulations and levels of popularity and exclusivity.

One sure is certain though, the Mediterranean doesn’t have any shortage in terms of areas that can be explored on a yacht! With all the kind of yachts available for rental in the region, you are sure to find one that suits your need and your budget.

Most luxury boat rentals have five or six staterooms or cabins in various configurations, including twins, double, queen, and king beds. On most charter yachts, you can customize the configuration of the cabins dependent on the number of guests. This will allow you to take between six and 12 charter guests. Depending on the charter vessel, staterooms may include ensuite bathrooms, state-of-the-art entertainment systems, private study areas, and walk-in wardrobes. Larger mega yachts may have additional cabins for staff members like nannies, security, or personal butlers.

It depends on the yacht. For example, you could ask for a master cabin that is separate from your yacht charter guests if you want enhanced levels of privacy. If you are one big family, you can request a yacht with cabins closer together. If sleeping arrangements, including the placement of cabins, are an important consideration, then let your charter broker know.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht in the Mediterranean in 2024?

From luxury yacht charter costs to crew tipping etiquette, ensuring you're well-versed in the intricacies of yacht charters will make your experience all the more enjoyable. Before you set sail on this exclusive adventure, let's dive into the details of yacht charter costs so you know what to expect.

Table of contents

What influences the cost of chartering a yacht, types of yacht charters: understanding your options, seasonality and its impact on rental rates, charter fees explained: what's included and what's not, size matters: how yacht size influences charter costs.

Yacht Charter Cost

Setting sail on a yacht isn't just about the base charter fee. Lo and behold, there's a whole treasure trove of additional expenses to consider, and understanding what influences the cost of chartering a yacht for a week is like navigating the high seas – it’s essential.

First off, there’s the base charter fee – that’s the hire cost of the yacht itself, complete with crew, equipment, and insurance. You also need to factor in additional expenses, like the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), Value Added Tax (VAT), and tips for the crew .

The overall price tag can vary wildly based on factors like yacht size, luxury level, travel season, and destination. As prices vary even among seemingly similar yachts, it is important to understand the factors that affect the weekly charter price. First and foremost, the size of the yacht and whether you are chartering in high or low season. After that, several factors are taken into consideration: the builder and the build year, the number of cabins and layout, the number of crew, the yacht’s reputation, water toys, amenities and equipment.

All of this can seem overwhelming if you are new to the world of luxury yacht charters, but don’t worry — that’s where our expert charter brokers come in! They’ll handpick a selection of yachts tailor-made for your ideal getaway. Each option includes detailed specs, lists of water toys for fun in the sun, and highlights of all the amenities onboard. Plus, we’ll even introduce you to the crew and give you a taste of the culinary delights that await with a sample menu.

Yacht Charter Cost

Bareboat - If the boat is listed as a bareboat, that means you are only paying for boat rental. You are in charge of hiring the crew, or you take on the role of the captain, with a proper license. None of the expenses are included in the price so you’re obliged to cover the service fee (transit log), fuel, dockage, food and drinks for your charter party, etc. Furthermore, the security deposit is a standard for bareboat charters and usually payable in cash or credit card.

Skippered - Skippered boats or yachts come with a captain/skipper, a licensed professional who is responsible for navigating the vessel. The captain can provide you with useful insights, suggest what to do and where to go, he/she has extensive knowledge of the cruising area and knows the ins and outs of the vessel. Their rate is included in the charter price, but all other expenses are covered by you.

Crewed - Crewed yacht is an umbrella term that includes a wide range of yachts, varying in crew size and yacht size. If you take a look at our crewed yacht charter fleet, you can choose from 21.46m M/Y BAZINGA with captain and stewardess on board, all the way to 55M superyacht TALEYA with the crew of 12, both of these yachts are crewed, but the difference is obvious. Having a crew on board guarantees all your needs are met and your safety is ensured.

Yacht Charter Cost

When it comes to the cost of renting a yacht for a week, the season can make all the difference. From the vibrant culture of Croatia to the irresistible charm of the French Riviera and the scenic beauty of Italy , the Mediterranean offers delights for every type of traveler. The charter season typically runs from April to October, with each month offering its unique charm. April to June and September to October are considered the low season, marked by reduced charter rates. Plus, the weather in those months is still pleasant, making it the perfect time for exploring the destination without the crowd.

On the flip side, July and August are the high season, with demand – and rates – reaching their peak. Most yacht owners set sail during these months, so if you're planning to cruise in high season months, be sure to book early. Our charter brokers recommend setting your dates at least 6-9 months in advance to secure your vessel. Remember, the best yachts always get booked first.

Yacht Charter Cost

Charter fees can seem like a maze of expenses, but fear not – we're here to guide you. The main idea behind luxury yacht charters is customization, tailoring a vacation to fit your needs specifically. This is not a one-size-fits-all business and it is not easy to have a single price.

What’s included in the charter fee?

Charter yachts above 20m in the Mediterranean usually operate under MYBA terms, which is the case with the Yacht IN charter fleet . MYBA charter terms can be described as a “plus all expenses” charter. The base charter rate refers to the cost of the yacht itself, inclusive of all equipment in working order, tenders, water toys, basic consumables for the galley and cabins, yacht laundry, crew wages and food, and yacht insurance. All other operational costs incurred during the charter are charged to the charterer separately and in addition to the yacht’s charter rate.

Other expenses that will be charged to the charterer in addition to the yacht’s charter rate under MYBA terms:

VAT - short for “Value Added Tax '' is applied on top of the yacht’s charter rate and the amount is determined by the VAT rate of the EU country in which the charter begins. Current (May 2024) VAT rates across Mediterranean countries are:

  • Croatia: VAT 13 %
  • Montenegro: NO VAT on charters
  • Italy: VAT 22 %
  • France: VAT 20 %
  • Spain: VAT 21%
  • Greece: VAT is 13% (as off Dec 11th 2023). Depending on the time spent in international waters, it can be reduced to 5.2% or 9.6%.

For charters commencing in a non-EU country, but passing-by or ending in an EU country, VAT will be applicable for the number of days spent in the EU country’s territorial waters. For example, If you start your charter in Montenegro (Non-EU country) and stay there for 1 or more nights before entering Croatian waters where you'll disembark, you will pay less VAT, i.e. 13% of VAT will apply only on days spent in Croatia.

APA - short for Advance Provisioning Allowance, is an amount usually ranging between 25% - 40% of the yacht’s charter rate, which you’ll pay in advance to cover all operational expenses during your charter period, referring to: food and all beverages for you and your charter guests; berthing dues and other harbor charges, local taxes, divers’ fees, customs formalities and any charges for waste disposal, charges for water and electricity taken from shore; personal laundry; Charter Party communications and internet use (if not included already in the yacht’s rate); and hire or purchase costs of any special equipment placed on board at your request.

The captain is in charge of handling the APA budget on your behalf and will keep a record of all expenses during your charter. The balance will be returned to you at the end of the charter. If more funds are needed during the charter period, the captain will alert you in time.

Delivery/redelivery fee - Delivery fees may apply if you require your charter to start/end in a port other than the homeport of the chosen yacht. You will be charged for the fuel used to relocate the yacht to the port of your choice. In some cases, the owner may charge you “empty run” days for the distance and time required to deliver the yacht to compensate for revenue lost due to delivery.

cost of a mediterranean yacht charter

When chartering a yacht, size does matter. The size of your vessel should be determined by a few key factors: the number of guests you'll be cruising with and the level of comfort you desire. Most luxury charter yachts can accommodate anywhere from 6 to 12 guests, though there are exceptions to every rule. Whether you're planning an intimate gathering or a lively party at sea, there's a yacht size to suit your needs.

But it's not just about headcount – you'll also want to consider the type of yacht that best fits your style. Are you drawn to the sleek lines of a motor yacht, the spacious layout of a catamaran, or the timeless elegance of a sailing vessel? And let's not forget about the grandeur of a superyacht for those seeking the ultimate luxury experience. When thinking about the average price to rent a yacht, keep in mind that superyachts will traditionally be the most expensive when calculating yacht charter costs, while smaller vessels may be more affordable.

The following explanation applies to motor yachts exclusively as sailing yachts and catamarans fall under a different, usually less expensive category.

Motor yachts under 20m I price range €15,000 -  € 35,000

In this size range, you will usually find the most affordable options, with 2 to 3 cabin yachts that accommodate 4 to 6 people. These yachts are chartered bareboat or with 1 crew member, a skipper.

Example I Skippered yacht Azimut S6 LEDA

Yacht Charter Cost

Motor yachts between 20m - 24m I Price range €18,000 -  € 45,000

Yachts in this range usually have 3 luxury cabins for 6 people, but some yachts have 4 cabins for 8 people. As the size grows, so does the number of crew and these yachts usually have 2 to 3 crew members (a captain, a chef, and/or a hostess). You can read here about the benefits of chartering a yacht up to 24 metres .

Example I Princess Y72 ELIZABETH

Motor yachts between 24m -  30m I Price range €35,000 - €100,000

This size range offers a variety of choices, from fast open yachts to more comfortable and stable displacement, two-deck yachts. These are usually 4 cabin yachts that accommodate 8 guests, but some exceptions have a fifth cabin. A crew from 2 to 4 members is on board. Prices vary significantly as these yachts differ in age, size, amenities, selection of water toys, etc.

Example I Ferreti Custom Line Navetta 26 FRIEND'S BOAT

Superyachts between 30m - 40m I Price range €50,000 - €160,000

There is a big gap between 30 and 40 meters, which is reflected in the price range. More luxurious yachts are common in this category as features are more exclusive: jacuzzis, spacious social areas, comfortable staterooms, a bigger selection of water toys, and more equipment in general. A bigger size means more space, which means more comfort and stability. Yachts with 5 stateroom cabins for 10 people are prevalent in this size range. In some cases, the master suite is located on the main deck which is an attractive feature. These yachts run with 4 to 7 crew members, meaning the service provided is more tailored and the stay is more luxurious than on smaller yachts, as expected.

Example I Sanlorenzo SD118 ANDIAMO

Yacht Charter Cost

Superyachts between 40m - 50m I Price range €80,000 - €330,000

Full beam master suites, upper deck VIP stateroom, offices, huge bathrooms, three decks with dining and social areas, sundeck Jacuzzis, and the list goes on. All of this becomes a standard on yachts in this size range. These yachts have up to 6 staterooms that accommodate up to 12 guests. The crew size grows to up to 12 people and the provided service is second to none.

Example I Benetti HAPPY ME

Yacht Charter Cost

Superyachts +50m I Price range + €250,000 - Million

The prices skyrocket within this category and whatever you imagine as the pinnacle of exclusivity is found on these superyachts and megayachts. The possibilities here are endless; gyms, beach clubs, private owners' decks, spas, helipads, cinemas, pools, and high-performance tenders are just some of the features in this size range.

What is the average cost of chartering a yacht in Croatia?

Chartering a yacht in Croatia offers a range of options to fit various budgets and preferences. The cost of renting a yacht for a week can vary depending on factors like the size and luxury level of the yacht, the duration of the charter, and the time of year. On average, chartering a yacht in Croatia can range from around 15.000 EUR per week for smaller vessels, while larger luxury yachts or superyachts can cost upwards of 100-300.000 EUR per week plus expenses.

Are taxes and VAT included in the charter rate?

No, they are not. Value Added Tax, commonly known as VAT, isn't factored into the entire charter fee; rather, it's determined by the VAT rate applicable in the country where the charter commences. VAT rates across the Mediterranean range from 5.2% in Greece to 22% in Italy.

How much should I tip the crew?

How much should you tip the hardworking crew who have made your maritime dreams come true? The average tip typically ranges from 5-15% of the base charter fee, but ultimately, the choice is yours. Whether you opt for a modest gratuity or a more generous gesture, remember to show appreciation for the crew's hard work and dedication throughout your charter. Particularly appropriate for superyachts, the waters which fringe the West Mediterranean are ideal for both sailing and cruising, with conveniently positioned ports making it easy to access the numerous coastal destinations.

The East Mediterranean, on the other hand, offers a melting pot of cultural experiences and captivating landscapes with its unique destinations rapidly becoming a hotspot for luxury yacht charters. Mediterranean Charters - Which part of the Mediterranean?

A Mediterranean charter will be a vacation experience unmatched anywhere else in the world. With multiple countries each with their own histories and culture, no other body of water gives a charter guest such exceptional diversity to explore. Visit "be seen bucket list destinations" or quiet off the beaten track harbors, you get to choose.

There are two main regions to book a mediterranean yacht charter.

Charter a yacht in the Mediterranean

West Mediterranean

The French Riviera is home to the world's most rich and famous and attracts party goers and the refined elite alike. Southern France provides both the high life and tranquil relaxation. Visiting the French Riviera, you must include Cannes and Monaco. St. Tropez, Antibes, and Nice are very popular also to include on a western mediterranean charter.

The Italian Riviera is famous for its smaller picturesque villages and towns. From the northern coast near France to the islands off Naples and on toward Sicily, there is no better view than one from the sea. Visit Portofino and Cinque Terra, the Amalfi Coast and Naples including Pompeii. Other hotspots include shopping on Capri and visiting the Blue Grotto.

Charter a yacht in Greece

East Mediterranean

Charter yachts can cruise the waters of Greece, Turkey, and Croatia. East Mediterranean yacht charters combine perfect blue green seas with fabled history and natural splendors. This area tends to be less touristy, and there are many ancient sites to explore. One of the world's most beautiful regions, the Aegean overflows with islands that beckon.

Don't forget Venice which might be coordinated with a cruise to Croatia. After all, nothing is as centered around water as Venice! Visit the beautiful island of Santorini. Check out Hvar. Souvenir shop in Bodrum. Aboard your charter yacht against the setting sun, your crew will serve wine and delicious seafood dinners that reflect the local specialties. Calamari, honey, cheese, and olives. The area is more than living history; it's a delicious, sunny destination.

Mediterranean Yacht Charters | Destinations and Their Unique Costs

Each Mediterranean destination has its own set of distinct costs and considerations. This diversity in expenses can significantly impact your overall budget. We will look at a few of the top destinations and some of the unique costs for each.

French Riviera

The allure of the French Riviera is undeniable, with world-renowned ports like Cannes and Nice drawing the jet-set crowd. However, this reputation doesn’t come without its price.

The French Riviera often has higher docking fees and premium mooring costs, reflecting the region’s popularity. The demand for prime berths in these iconic locations can increase expenses.

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Italy’s Amalfi Coast is famous for its breathtaking beauty. This coastal paradise offers an abundance of islands, bays, and coves to explore. A Mediterranean yacht charter along the Amalfi Coast is a special experience and one of the area’s best.

The numerous island-hopping opportunities and the winding coastline can increase fuel costs. Nevertheless, the Amalfi Coast’s enchanting landscapes and cultural treasures make it a must-visit destination.

Greek Islands and Turkish Riviera

The Greek Islands and the Turkish Riviera are appealing solutions for a more budget-conscious option. These destinations are affordable without compromising on the captivating experiences they provide. The Greek Islands have stunning landscapes, ancient history, and charming villages, all accessible at a more reasonable cost.

Similarly, the Turkish Riviera offers a rich blend of culture and natural beauty with less expensive options. This destination is an attractive alternative for those exploring the Mediterranean without breaking the bank.

The High-End Havens | Why They’re Expensive

Destinations like Monaco and Saint-Tropez are famous for being exclusive and offering high-end services. These perks naturally come with a price tag. Certain peak times also add to the expense. The Cannes Film Festival , The Monaco Grand Prix, regattas, and boat shows are popular times for visiting.

In addition, exclusive marinas , Michelin-starred restaurants , and a bustling nightlife scene all contribute to these destinations’ elevated costs. However, the allure of rubbing shoulders with the global elite makes the expense worthwhile for many luxury travelers.

Hidden Gems | Less Expensive Destinations

Lesser-known destinations like Croatia and the Balearic Islands offer the perfect mix of affordability and charm.

Croatia boasts lower mooring fees and a lower cost of living. You can enjoy the Mediterranean’s beauty without emptying your wallet.

The Balearic Islands provide an idyllic Mediterranean experience at a more moderate price point.

Types of Yachts and Cost for Mediterranean Yacht Charters

Yacht types play a pivotal role in determining charter costs. The Mediterranean offers a wide range of private yachts. Choose from fast motor yachts and elegant sailing yachts .

Gulets are an option as well. These traditional wooden sailing yachts cruise Croatia, Turkey, and the surrounding areas.

For the ultimate experience, mega yachts offer an unparalleled experience. These yachts cater to a distinct clientele.

Mediterranean Yacht Charters | Seasonal Considerations

The Mediterranean’s peak charter season spans from May to September, aligning with the region’s warm weather and vibrant events. However, the higher demand during this period can lead to increased charter rates and potential scarcity of preferred yachts.

In addition, famous events such as the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix are times that increase yacht charter prices.

Traveling during the off-season, often in spring and fall, can yield cost savings. Yet you will still enjoy pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

What are some of the additional costs to consider for Mediterranean Yacht Charters?

  • Crew Gratuities: It is customary to provide gratuities to express appreciation for the crew’s exceptional service. This amount can vary but is around 10- 15% of the charter fee.
  • Fuel expenses are a significant consideration. The cost depends on the yacht’s size, cruising speed, and the distance covered. Discussing the expected fuel expenses with your charter company beforehand can help you manage this cost.
  • Provisioning for Gourmet Meals: While some charter packages include meals, others may require provisioning. This involves purchasing groceries and supplies for the journey.
  • Optional Add-Ons: Many yacht charters offer a range of optional add-ons to enhance your experience. These can include scuba diving excursions and on-board spa services.
  • Onshore Dining and Excursions: Exploring the Mediterranean’s charming ports and villages can be a highlight of your journey. Be prepared for expenses related to dining ashore at local restaurants, guided tours, and excursions.
  • Shopping: If you enjoy souvenir shopping or purchasing local products, allocate a portion of your budget to shopping. The Mediterranean offers an array of unique items, from artisan crafts to designer goods.
  • Incidentals: Finally, setting aside a contingency fund for unexpected expenses or incidentals is wise.

Navigating the costs of luxury yacht charters in the Mediterranean requires a thoughtful approach. Proper planning and informed choices allow you to experience the Mediterranean’s allure while staying within your budget.

Italian Riviera Yacht Charters

The Italian Riviera, also known as the Ligurian Riviera, has long been a destination for the world’s rich and famous. Tucked between the Cote d’Azur and Tuscany, this narrow strip of land is home to famous locales such as Portofino, Cinque Terre, Bordighera, San Remo, and Genoa. The old-world flair, colorful buildings, and quaint fishing villages exude style and charm; it’s no wonder this is such a popular charter destination.

Cote d'Azur Yacht Charters

Also known as the French Riviera, the Cote d’Azur is a hub of new superyachts and private yacht charters. Mediterranean cities and towns such as Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Nice, Antibes, and the principality of Monaco have become world-renowned, with this sun-drenched area acting as the playground of the rich and famous. This beautiful stretch of coastline was one of the first destinations to be considered a “resort area” due to its great weather and idyllic landscapes.

Corsica Yacht Charters

Located approximately 160 km from the French mainland, this island’s culture is an amalgamation of the various foreign nations that have occupied Corsica over the years. The capital of Corsica is the city of Ajaccio, the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, perhaps Corsica’s most infamous son. Corsica has about 1000 km of coastline, much of it accessible only by boat making it perfect for luxury yacht charter . Mediterranean cliffs and mountains cover much of the island and deliver scenery you will not soon forget.

Sardinia Yacht Charters

What Does it Cost to Charter a Yacht in the Mediterranean?

Mega Yacht Charters

The Mediterranean yacht rate structure in a contract to charter a boat is as follows. First, there is a fixed base rate for the boat and the crew. Second, there is a “variable” part which is called the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance).

This is, essentially, an “advance” that you are making to the Captain of the vessel to cover expenses that are unknown at this point. For example the fuel, and yes, sailing vessels actually use fuel too, for the generators and main engines if used – fuel is dependent on the itinerary and the itinerary is unknown at this point because you, as the charterer of the vessel can legally ask the captain to visit different places and ports when you are on board, also the weather can change and if you have the wind against you the vessel may consume more fuel than if you were running down-wind.

pathos yacht

All of these items are collectively grouped into this “variable” part of the rate that is covered by the APA. Now, to make things easier for the charterer (you) we, as booking agents, tend to assign a percentage of the base rate to cover the APA. In the case of Greece, for example, we tend to give you an approximate figure that ranges from 25% to 30% of the base rate for sailing vessels and  30% – 35% of the base rate for motor yachts.

So, as an example, if your base charter rate is E5,000 a day, and we assign 30% extra so it becomes E5,000 + E1,500 for the APA, or E6,500 a day plus VAT (European Value Added Tax) on the base rate.  The European VAT  can change depending on the flag of the vessel and the port of departure and the certification of the vessel. There have been some discussion recently in various EU governments about the taxation of domestic and foreign yachts, so the VAT is and will continue to be, a moving target.

At the end of your charter, the captain will reconcile the actual expenditures vs. the APA with actual receipts, so you know where the money has gone and he will give you periodic updates as to where you stand with the APA.

woman sunbathing on a sailboat

5% to 7% of the base charter rate is a good rule of thumb, depending on service, of course. The gratuity should be given to the captain so he can distribute it to the other crew members.

All this sounds a little complicated but it has developed naturally over the years as a protection for the client as well as the ship-owner. All inclusive packages sound great but you’ll usually be over-paying for something. The “plus- expenses” system protects you because you only pay for what is actually spent.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht?

There are many things to consider and first time charterers can be left confused, that's why we've created a comprehensive guide to yacht charter prices (with a checklist).

charter cost explained banner

The good news: It’s easy to grasp the basics of yacht charter pricing. And with one of our experts in your corner, we can help you more accurately estimate the cost of your next once-in-a-lifetime vacation.

The cost of a yacht charter is dependent on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the charter destination, local taxes, and the base cost. (If the yacht has a celebrity owner, well that too, can add to the cost.)

Therefore, yacht charters have a wide range of base prices. That’s why charters can cost from $10,000 per week on smaller sailing yachts and catamarans, up to $150,000+ per week on the most luxurious motor superyachts.

What else can you expect to pay? This overview – a part of our planning resource, the Charter Advice Guide – offers an in-depth look at charter yacht costs.

Yacht Charter Price Structure: “All-Inclusive” vs “Plus Expenses”

In the world of yachting, two types of crewed yacht charters are available to you – “All-Inclusive” and “Plus Expenses” charter experiences. What do these terms mean exactly? Here’s a quick look:

  • All-Inclusive Yacht Charters – Some charters (mainly catamaran and monohull charters in the Virgin Islands) offer all-inclusive rates. That means rates are based on the number of guests, and they include all food and drink, water sports, and fuel costs. Dockage and taxes, though, are usually charged separately.
  • Plus Expenses Charters – Rates for larger motor yachts do not include running expenses, which must be paid separately. For these luxury charters, the base price is for the yacht only. Additional expenses, i.e. food, bar, fuel, dockage, port taxes, and other expenses, are charged separately. Most frequently, the running expenses are paid by an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA, which is typically 35% of the base price; this is an amount that’s paid prior to the charter.

Our chart below offers a quick overview of what’s included in both of these types of charters.

Average Yacht Charter Cost: Base Prices

What can you expect to pay for a catamaran, a sailing vessel, or motored yacht? Here’s a quick overview of the average cost to rent a yacht (not including extra expenses) for the most common types available:

Factors that Affect Yacht Charter Prices

Since charter yachts are privately owned, prices are set by the owner. This can explain, in part, the wide range of differences in price between boats of similar lengths. Yet, several other factors can significantly impact price, including:

  • The Yacht – The year the boat was built, the builder, previous owners, and the boat’s selection of water toys can also increase the cost of a yacht. Boats can also develop a reputation, i.e. the largest or most luxurious, or having a famous builder or previous owner. Reputation can also affect pricing.
  • Season – Prices typically increase in the high season – i.e. high summer in the Mediterranean or winter in the Caribbean – and decrease in low seasons.
  • Destination – Your charter destination also plays a role in charter cost. For example, prices increase in areas without large charter fleets (i.e. the Galapagos), whereas Bahamas yacht charters,   BVI charters , or Mediterranean yacht charter are priced more competitively.

Additional Costs Considerations on Yacht Charter

In addition to the cost associated with running the yacht and provisioning, there are a number of other costs that must be considered. These are the most significant:

Advanced Provisioning Allowance

The APA on Plus Expenses charters equals roughly 35% of the yacht’s base price. This is a fee that’s collected prior to charter, and it’s similar to an expense account the captain can access during the charter. At the end of the charter, you will receive a detailed accounting of your APA account, plus any unused APA funds in cash.

In the case of overages, you may be required to replenish the APA account during the charter. This can be done with cash, although many choose to set up accounts with their charter brokers , which can be accessed if requested by the captain.

Taxes and Value Added Tax (VAT)

Most boats – whether all-inclusive or Plus Expenses – will not include local taxes or a Value Added Tax into their charter rate. The charterer will be responsible for paying those taxes. Taxes range significantly by destination; here’s a look at some of yachting’s most popular destinations:

  • The Bahamas – Tax: 4% plus 10% VAT
  • BVI – Tax: between $6 and $16 per person per day, depending on the flag of the boat
  • Croatia – VAT: 13%
  • Florida – Tax: 6% for Broward County, 7% for Miami-Dade County
  • France – VAT: 20%, however, 10% can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
  • Greece – VAT: 12%
  • Italy – VAT: 22%, however 6.6% (over 24m) and 8.8% (under 24m) can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
  • Montenegro – NO VAT
  • New England – NO TAX
  • Spain – VAT: 21%
  • Turkey – NO VAT

Charterers can purchase cancellation and curtailment insurance – which is similar to traveler’s insurance. This insurance can help cover costs if a charterer must cancel or shorten the charter. Charter brokers can help you weigh insurance options, and often offer several different options.

Crew Gratuity

While crew gratuity is certainly not mandatory, it is recommended, particularly if you were truly impressed with your charter experience. In general, crew gratuity is roughly 15-20% of the base charter rate, which is handed to the captain at the conclusion of your charter.

Delivery Fees

While these fees do not apply on most charters, you may be asked to pay delivery costs if you are not chartering in the yacht’s normal cruising ground. In most cases, you will only be required to cover the fuel for the trip.

Additional Charter Cost FAQs

What are standard private charter yacht prices?

There are a number of factors that affect charter yacht pricing. However, on average, a week-long private yacht charter costs anywhere from $10,000 on luxurious sailing yachts and catamarans, and up to $150,000 for superyachts.

What affects charter yacht prices?

There are several things that influence how much your yacht charter will cost. The type of vessel, charter destination, length of trip, base cost, time of year, and local taxes all make a difference.

How much does it cost for a crewed vessel?

Charter yacht prices do increase when hiring a crew along with the boat. At Worldwide Boat, we offer two types of crewed charter experiences: all-inclusive and plus expenses. An all-inclusive charter yacht includes accommodation for all guests, food and drink, water sport activities, and fuel costs – dockage fees and taxes are charged separately. A plus expenses experience accounts for just the yacht’s base price. Things like food, drinks, fuel, dockages, taxes, and other expenses are charged separately and are usually estimated to be about 35% of the base price.

What’s included in all-inclusive boat charters?

At Worldwide Boat, your all-inclusive charter experience includes a diligent and friendly crew, water toys, food, drinks, fuel, water and electric services, and occasionally diving experiences.

What are some additional charter boat costs to consider?

After finding a base price you’re comfortable with and evaluating your package, you’ll also want to consider delivery fees, crew gratuity, insurance fees, taxes, and Advanced Provisioning Allowance rates. If you are responsible for these fees, your crew will handle the necessary transactions on your behalf.

What does it cost to rent a 100- foot yacht charter?

This depends on what type of vessel you’re looking at and how long you’ll need it for. The average weekly cost of a 100-foot sailing yacht is between $50,000-100,000. A weekly 80-foot catamaran charter runs around $40,000-100,000, and a week-long 100-foot motor yacht rental is anywhere between $50,000-80,000.

Does the price to rent a yacht change depending on what type of boat it is?

Yes. Worldwide Boat offers sailing yachts, catamarans, and motor yachts. All of these vessels have different capabilities, but there are other factors that determine the price beyond what type of boat you choose. The year the boat was built, owner, availability of water toys, onboard amenities, and the ship’s reputation can all change how much the ship is priced at.

When is the high season for yacht charters?

The price of a yacht fluctuates depending on the season. A Mediterranean yacht charter cost rises in the summer and drops in the winter, whereas Caribbean boat charter prices are high during the winter and lower in the summer months.

How does my destination affect charter yacht cost?

The more remote an area is, the more expensive it will be to charter a yacht there. That’s because prices go up in areas that have fewer boats. If you were to travel somewhere like the Galapagos, which isn’t a typical yacht destination, you’d pay more than you would if you were traveling to the Caribbean.

How much do I tip the crew when reviewing my yacht charter expenses?

It’s not required that you tip your crew, but it is recommended and appreciated. If you had an enjoyable experience it’s considered polite to tip your crew anywhere from 15-20% at the end of your charter.

Here, we'll take a look at some factors, including seasonal fluctuations and additional expenses.

cost of a mediterranean yacht charter

Seasonal fluctuations of chartering yachts

The Mediterranean yacht charter season generally runs from April to October , with the peak months being July and August. During these months, demand is high, and prices tend to be at their highest. However, you can still find great deals during the shoulder months of May, June, September, and October. The weather and sailing conditions vary depending on the time of year, so make sure to do your research and choose the best time to suit your preferences and budget.

Additional expenses for chartering a yacht

Additional expenses such as fuel, food, beverages, and harbor fees can significantly impact your total cost. Most yacht charters operate on an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) basis, which means you will be charged a percentage of the charter fee (usually 20–30%) to cover these additional expenses. It's important to plan and budget for these costs to avoid any surprises.

Remember that tipping the crew is customary, so factor that into your budget as well. A general guideline is 10–15% of the total charter fee, depending on the quality of service.

Yacht charters can also offer optional extras such as water sports equipment, diving gear, or event planning services. These can add to the overall cost, so consider which optional features you'd like to include in your charter experience and inquire about their associated fees.

Choosing the perfect yacht for your Mediterranean vacation is an exciting step in the planning process. To find the ideal yacht for your needs, consider the following factors:

Budget : Determine how much you're willing to spend on your yacht charter experience. The cost to rent a yacht can vary significantly, from €140,000 per week for the Below Deck yachts to more affordable options from various yacht rental services.

Duration : Decide how long you'd like to charter the yacht and plan your itinerary accordingly. This will help you pick the most suitable yacht for your desired time frame.

Guests : Assess the number of guests joining your trip. Ensure the yacht you choose can accommodate everyone comfortably.

Amenities : Consider the type of amenities you'd like on board. These may include gym equipment, watersports equipment, or spa facilities. Make sure the yacht provides the amenities you need for an enjoyable time.

Now that you have an idea of what you're looking for in a yacht, follow these steps to book your Mediterranean yacht experience:

Step 1: Research yacht charter agencies

Start by researching reputable yacht charter agencies, like CharterWorld or Northrop & Johnson . Browse their websites to see the different yachts and itineraries available.

Step 2: Contact a yacht charter broker

Get in touch with a professional yacht charter broker who can help you find the perfect yacht for your needs. Discuss your budget, desired time frame, and preferences with the broker to narrow down your choices.

Step 3: Select your yacht

Choose the yacht that best suits your preferences, budget, and availability. Ensure the yacht is available during your desired dates and confirm the details of the rental agreement.

Step 4: Finalize your booking

Once you've selected your yacht and agreed on the price and rental terms, submit the necessary paperwork and deposits to secure your booking. Make sure to read and understand the contract thoroughly before signing.

New Mediterranean Charter Options

  • By Kim Kavin
  • August 19, 2024

Croatia

Most years, new launches depart from shipyards bound for the Mediterranean in time for the summer charter season—with savvy clients strategizing to be among the first parties welcomed aboard. The pandemic caused a blip in that pattern, making new launches a lot harder to book for a couple of years, but quite a few charter companies are now advertising 2023 and 2024 builds with itineraries available in the most popular cruising grounds all along the West and East Mediterranean.

As you can see in the images on the opposite page, these new builds come in all kinds of styles, from eco-friendly power catamarans to motoryachts with sole-to-ceiling glazing. Some are among just a handful of newer models out cruising anywhere on the world’s waters, for private or charter use.

121-foot Benetti

The Benetti Alluria , for instance, was one of just eight Motopanfilo 37M hulls when it launched last year. Amenities include a full-beam master stateroom, a foredeck pool and sun pads, and an Axopar Brabus 900 chase boat for looking sharp when heading into port.

86-foot Sunseeker

The Sunseeker 86 Mowana is also a notable newer build, with a top speed of 28 knots and a cruising speed of 19 knots for making the runs easy between waypoints. Guest areas are forward and aft, letting charter clients avoid prying eyes no matter how the yacht is situated in an anchorage. Inside, one of the four staterooms has a bunk-style Pullman along with twin berths, creating an enclave for the kids.

Sunreef 60 Eco

Yet another interesting new offering is Catallaxy , a Sunreef 60 Eco sailing yacht. It has a full-beam bow terrace in addition to a guest area on the flybridge and an outdoor relaxation area aft.

Of course, destinations in the Mediterranean are classics, but visiting them in the comfort of a brand-new yacht only enhances the charter experience.

The Adriatic Sea

  • Croatia has become a full-on popular summer charter destination, with its coastline full of villages, cities and islands to explore. An increasing number of charter yachts offer itineraries here each year.
  • Vrbnik is in the north, while Split and Dubrovnik are popular destinations farther to the south.
  • Dubrovnik is especially popular with fans of the HBO series Game of Thrones , which filmed many of its episodes in and around the city.

A tornado sank a luxury sailing boat off the coast of Sicily. Here’s what we know

E mergency workers in southern Italy are still hunting for at least one person who remains missing after a tornado sank a luxury yacht early Monday – prompting an air and naval operation off the coast of Sicily .

Twenty-two people are thought to have been on the yacht when the tragedy struck. Fifteen people were rescued from the wreckage, according to Italy’s Coast Guard. One body was recovered on Monday and five more were found on Wednesday, after divers struggled to reach deep inside the yacht around 50 meters underwater (approximately 150 feet).

Two Americans and four Britons were among the six initially reported missing – including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and Chris Morvillo, a prominent lawyer. The five bodies found Wednesday have not been identified, while the body recovered Monday is thought to be that of the onboard chef Ricardo Thomas.

Here’s what we know.

What happened?

A small waterspout – a type of tornado – spun over the Mediterranean island early Monday, likely capsizing the sailing boat amid lashings of rain and strong thunderstorms.

The British-flagged yacht, called the “Bayesian,” was anchored about a half a mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast. The vessel sank after its mast broke in half in the storm, Salvatore Cocina, head of Sicily’s Civil Protection, told CNN on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses described furious gales and hurricane-like winds that left an avalanche of debris near the pier.

More than a dozen survivors were spotted in the area hanging onto life rafts, according to the captain of a nearby boat, who steadied his ship to avoid colliding with the Bayesian.

“We got this strong hurricane gust and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position,” Karsten Bower told reporters in Palermo on Monday. “After the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone.”

Bower and his crew rescued four injured people, he said, before calling Italy’s Coast Guard – who later rescued the remaining survivors.

One of those rescued – a child – was airlifted to the children’s hospital in Palermo. Eight people were hospitalized in total, according to the mayor’s office.

The girl’s mother, Charlotte, described how she battled to hold onto Sofia, her 1-year-old daughter, as reported by Italian news agency ANSA.

“In two seconds I lost the baby in the sea, then I immediately hugged her again amidst the fury of the waves. I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy,” she told journalists. “Many were screaming.”

The mother and daughter were later reunited with the father, James, according to a doctor at the local children’s hospital in Palermo.

“The survivors are very tired and are constantly asking about the missing people,” the doctor, Domenico Cipolla, said Monday. “They are talking and crying all the time because they have realized that there is little hope of finding their friends alive.”

Italy’s fire brigade dispatched helicopters to aid in the search, officials said Monday. After an unsuccessful attempt on Monday, the brigade sent divers to try and enter the sunken ship Tuesday, recommencing the operation on Wednesday.

The depth of the wreck means divers can only work there for limited periods of time, according to Marco Tilotta, an inspector for the diving unit of Palermo’s local fire brigade. The Italian fire brigade said Monday its divers had reached the yacht’s hull 49 meters (160 feet) below sea level.

The United Kingdom’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) said it has deployed a team of four inspectors to Palermo which is conducting a preliminary assessment of the scene.

Who was on board?

Twenty-two people were on board the Bayesian, which was flying under a British flag and had mostly British passengers and crew, in addition to two Anglo-French, one Irish and one Sri Lankan person, a spokesperson for Italy’s Coast Guard told CNN.

A troupe of high-profile guests are among those missing, including Lynch, the 59-year-old British tech investor who fought a fraud case earlier this year in the United States – which spiraled from the disastrous $11 billion sale of his company to tech firm Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2011.

His 18-year-old daughter was also named missing. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, survived the accident. Bacares told Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica that she woke up at 4 a.m. local time, as the boat tilted. She and her husband were not initially concerned, she said, but became worried when the windows of the yacht shattered and chaos erupted.

Bacares spoke to the newspaper while sitting in a wheelchair, at a hospital in the Sicilian town of Termini Imerese. She had abrasions on her feet and bandages on other parts of her body, it reported.

Bloomer, the finance tycoon, and Morvillo, a prominent lawyer – and both their wives – are also among the missing, according to Salvatore Cocina, head of Sicily’s Civil Protection.

Morvillo, an American partner at Clifford Chance, was involved in successfully defeating the US fraud case against Lynch in June. Another employee of the firm, Ayla Ronald, and her partner, survived the incident, according to a spokesperson for Clifford Chance.

The body that was recovered from the vessel on Monday was identified as the onboard chef Ricardo Thomas, an Antiguan citizen, Reuters reported.

What do we know about the boat?

Built in 2008, the 56-meter (184-foot) yacht was manufactured by Italian company Perini Navi, Reuters reported. According to the Associated Press, the boat has been available for charter for $215,000 (€195,000) per week.

Lynch’s wife is linked to the yacht. The Bayesian is held by the company Revtom Limited, according to records from the maritime information service Equasis. The company’s latest annual return from April lists Bacares as the proprietor.

“Bayesian,” the name given to the vessel, is linked to the statistical theory on which Lynch built his fortune, according to Reuters.

The yacht’s mast stood 72.27 meters (237 feet) high above the designated water line, just short of the world’s tallest mast which is 75.2 meters, according to Guinness World Records. It was the tallest aluminium mast in the world, the Perini Navi website said.

Perini Navi is known for making “good quality boats,” according to Caroline White, deputy editor of BOAT International, a media group serving the superyacht industry.

White told CNN that if the Bayesian dismasted, “it should theoretically become more stable.” “But it might be a different story if you are in the middle of a violent storm with incredibly strong winds pinning you to the water,” she added.

Dangerous weather conditions

Strong storms across Sicily brought torrential rainfall late Sunday. Initial reports suggest a small  waterspout , which developed over the area Monday morning, could have been behind the yacht’s sinking.

Waterspouts – one of several types of tornadoes – are spinning columns of air that form over water, or move from land out to water. They are often accompanied by  high winds, high seas, hail and dangerous lightning . While they are most common over tropical oceans, they can form almost anywhere.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told CNN that while waterspouts in Sicily are rare, “there is a risk” they can happen – just not every day.

Waterspouts rely on warm waters to gain energy and the Mediterranean Sea has been very hot, reaching a record  daily median of 28.9 degrees Celsius  (84 Fahrenheit) last week, according to preliminary data from researchers at the Institute of Marine Sciences in Spain.

Local temperatures have been even higher, with waters around Sicily reaching almost 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), almost 3 degrees more than normal, Italian climatologist Luca Mercalli told CNN.

“Warmer oceans have more energy and more humidity to transfer to the atmosphere, the most important fuels for storms,” he said.

CNN’s Laura Paddison, Louis Mian, Benjamin Brown, Catherine Nicholls, Sabrina Souza, Niamh Kennedy and Eve Brennan contributed reporting.
