Dehler 30 OD: the most fun you can have on the water

Can a one-design offshore racing yacht be suitable for short-handed cruising too? This might actually be the case with the new Dehler 30

While we cruised along at a relaxed 10 knots, flying the A5 asymmetric spinnaker with 13-14 knots of wind on the beam, I couldn’t help thinking that this was a very efficient way of getting around the Solent .

It was efficient in terms of both manpower and size of boat, because we weren’t on a 40ft grand-prix racing yacht with 10 crew on the rail.

Neither were we on a multihull. We – and there were just three of us – were on a 30-foot monohull, and only the helmsman and trimmer were doing any work.

Yes, it was a race boat, but as easy to sail as most cruisers and going about twice as fast.

Whichever way you look at it, our speed-to-effort ratio wasn’t bad.

The boat in question was the Dehler 30 One Design – an example of a new breed of boat that has been growing in popularity in recent years.

Anyone who keeps even half an eye on the racing scene can’t have helped notice the arrival and success of, among others, Jeanneau’s Sun Fast 3300, the JPKs and the J/99 .

These are light, high-performance racers with a difference.

Unlike some of the other speedy 30-ish-footers – the Mumm 30, Melges 30, Farr 30, Farr 280 and the new kid on the block, the Cape 31, for example – they’re not designed with the emphasis on fully crewed inshore racing around the cans.

To be fair, neither was the Mumm 30 restricted to that, since it was used for the Tour de France à la Voile for 11 years (and, coincidentally, has recorded a peak speed of 28 knots).

But the point is that this new evolution of race boat has been conceived with short-handed offshore sailing very much in mind.

Some of the designs were inspired by the proposed double-handed offshore class in the Olympics that was subsequently abandoned, though that loss has been compensated for by the growing interest in two-handed racing following COVID lockdown restrictions.

Dehler 30 OD: Designed to be different

For a boat to be sailed offshore , it has to offer accommodation.

To be sailed by one or two people, it also has to stand up to its rig without a row of bodies stacked on the rail, so stability is of the essence.

It will be designed for ease of handling with a small crew, and performance will tend to be optimised for straight-line speed, often with the emphasis on reaching.

By contrast, inshore IRC racers will need to perform on relatively short courses, predominantly consisting of windward/leeward legs and with frequent mark-roundings.

Boats designed for one type of racing will rarely excel at the other.

That said, the designers and builders recognise that people who race short-handed offshore will probably want to race around the cans on occasions as well. The Round The Island Race isn’t exactly around the cans, but it’s always interesting to see which boats do well in which conditions.

This year was a brisk one with a lot of reaching, and eight of the top 10 places in IRC Division 1C were taken by Sun Fasts; six of them 3300s (1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th) and the other two by the 3300’s bigger and older sister, the 3600.

The first 3300s finished in under 7 hours, at an average speed for the 50-mile course of over 7 knots – or rather more than 7 knots over the actual distance sailed. I photographed a fair few of them from my RIB as they planed past, and they were shifting.

If you’re looking to buy a boat in this size range for short-handed offshore racing, the Sun Fast, the J/99 and the JPKs are among the prime contenders.

They have now been joined by the Farr X2 and the Dehler 30 OD, the latter being what Ian Griffiths chose.

He made his choice after looking at performance figures, VPPs (velocity prediction programs), IRC ratings and more, and his is the first Dehler 30 OD in the UK.

Ian is a relative newcomer to sailing, having sailed two legs of the Clipper Round-the-World race – taking in the Southern Ocean – with his daughter in 2019/2020.

His longer-term plan had been to buy a boat and take the family to the South Pacific, ‘to have a caravan on the water and cruise around’.

The Clipper was part of his preparation. ‘If I could survive some of the world’s most notorious oceans,’ he said, ‘I should be able to build up my confidence and know that I would be capable of looking after my family.’

As it turned out, his sailing ended up taking a different course. When it became clear that family cruising wasn’t going to happen, he channeled his competitive instincts – already exercised in other sports including motocross – into sailing.

‘We’re a competitive family,’ Ian explained, ‘so things shifted towards the competitive angle.’

He had been looking into short-handed offshore racing before lockdown restrictions boosted its popularity, thinking that it would be nice if he and his daughter could enter RORC races such as the Fastnet and Caribbean 600.

However, since his daughter’s university course clashed with the Fastnet, plans took yet another turn and he teamed up with Richard Gould, who had been his skipper in the Clipper race.

Ian and Richard started to plan an offshore racing campaign, with the 2023 Fastnet as their first big event.

To do that, of course, they would need a boat – and so began Ian’s quest to find one. Initially he looked at bigger boats too, including the Pogo 40, before ruling them out principally on the basis that a smaller boat would be easier to sail at close to its potential.

The Farr X2 was eliminated for reasons of cost, and so the list shortened. In a way the Sun Fast 3300 might have seemed the obvious choice, already having an impressive track record and with a similar IRC rating to the Dehler (typically around 1.033) despite its greater length, but Ian’s analysis pointed to the Dehler 30 OD.

The go-fast factor

When you look at the features of the Dehler 30 OD and compare them with those of a typical modern cruising yacht, or even many inshore racers, it’s easy to see what sets it apart.

For a start, it weighs in at 2,800kg (just over 6,000lb). That’s not a lot for a boat with a 9m (29ft 5in) waterline.

The hull is vacuum-infused with E-glass and a cored laminate. A carbon mast comes as standard.

Below the waterline is a GRP fin keel with a 900kg (1,950lb) lead T-bulb on the bottom to keep the ballast as low as possible for minimum weight and maximum righting moment.

Internally the boat is far from stark by racing standards (cruising is mentioned several times in Dehler’s literature), but furnishings are minimal and the lightweight mesh hull-lining is removable.

As well as being light and with a low centre of gravity, the Dehler 30 OD can carry an extra 200kg (440lb) on the high side in the form of water ballast.

Equivalent to three (67kg/10.5-stone) crew on the rail, it’s pumped in and out (or sucked out if the boat’s moving at any speed) through a self-contained system and can quickly be dumped by gravity from the windward to the leeward tank just before a tack.

As you would expect on a boat of this nature, the bow is a semi-scow design.

It also features reverse rake and the distinctive reverse-flare chines/chamfers seen on boats such as Rán VII to reduce weight and windage forward, stiffen the bow sections and help the air-flow around the foot of the headsail.

The moulded bowsprit can be removed for cruising.

Again as befits a boat designed with offwind sailing very much in mind, the deck-stepped mast is set well aft and supported by rod rigging with the shroud base taken right outboard to minimise compression.

A square-top mainsail is to be expected too, though one surprise is the single set of spreaders. They’re set well down the mast to keep the centre of gravity as low as possible.

Such is the sweep-back on the spreaders – the boat is not designed to sail deep downwind angles – that twin backstays are fitted purely as tuning tools.

Deck spreaders to widen the sheeting angle for offwind sails can also be fitted. While none of this is radical, the Dehler 30 OD does have one secret weapon: the Stealth Drive.

The prop shaft is encased in a moulding that, together with the propeller, swings up inside the hull to leave a flush bottom.

This even allows the use of a fixed prop, because it retracts into a prop-box inside which are most of the skin fittings including the inlet and outlet for the water-ballast system.

The thrust from the 10hp Nanni diesel does not therefore need to be compromised in any way by folding blades.

What it all means in practice is that, by cruising standards, the Dehler is a real rocket ship.

If you’re used to plodding along at displacement speeds with the occasional surf when conditions get lively, and to broaching all over the ocean as soon as the boat heels more than 25°, you will find the speed and tractability of the Dehler 30 OD to be a revelation.

I’m used to sailing fully crewed race boats and to the grip of twin rudders (they’re deep on the Dehler), but I was impressed by the way the boat hopped on to a semi-plane when the gunwale was almost awash and the foot of the A5 skimming the water as we reached along with the apparent wind well forward of the beam.

Being able to plane when well heeled at relatively shy angles is all part of the plan with boats like this.

The helm remained finger-light and the boat crisp and responsive to every tweak of the tiller as we weaved our way past cruising boats that seemed dead in the water.

Even without the kite in 15 knots of true wind we maintained over 8.5 knots, and still clocked high 6s when hardened up with the apparent wind well within 30°.

With a wide range of A (asymmetric) sails to choose from, you would be highly unlikely to continue under plain sail with the apparent wind abaft the beam: the A5 or (for closer angles) the Code 0 would be set as soon as the angle and wind-speed allowed. Such is the boat’s ability to carry these sails that there’s little reason not to.

Racing concessions

Of course there are compromises when it comes to cruising with a boat like this, quite apart from the draught.

It wouldn’t perform to its potential if laden down with too much cruising kit – not that there’s a vast amount of external space to stow it.

You have a locker right aft to starboard in the cockpit opposite the liferaft locker to port (which was missing its lid when we sailed).

Cruising sailors might find the boom on the low side, too. If you’re used to sailing a Finn, a Europe or an OK you will feel quite at home.

Plenty more stowage is down below in the bunks either side of the engine, the casing for the Stealth Drive and the other centrally mounted systems.

Impressive though the boat’s performance was during our sail, we were still only in the Solent in flat water and moderate winds.

I saw Ian and Richard again during the JOG Weymouth Race and later in the Round The Island. Conditions were too light and popply in the former for the Dehler to get into its stride.

It fared better in the Round The Island when its proper laminate sails had arrived (as opposed to the delivery sails in Dacron that we were using).

Peak speed to date is 16.4 knots and Ian has been keeping a bottle of Champagne on ice ready for when the 20-knot barrier is broken.

As for creature comforts – well, it’s light, bright and minimalist below decks but neatly finished.

You get an encloseable heads, a basic galley and decent berths for four people.

Because of the simple fitout and minimal trim, access to the fittings and systems is excellent. Other builders could learn from this.

Test verdict on the Dehler 30 OD

The most remarkable feature of the Dehler 30 OD is not only its performance, but also how little effort is needed to achieve speeds that one could only have dreamed of a few years ago.

If you want to get the best out of any boat in a racing context, of course that’s a different matter; a lot of work will be needed.

That’s what Ian and Richard are putting in now, and it will take time. In terms of manageability and the pleasure of fast, simple sailing, a boat like this has much to offer.

Being able to unfurl (or un-sock) a Code or A sail and hop on to the plane at double-figure speeds in only moderate conditions opens up all sorts of opportunities that have never existed before for monohull sailors.

Upwind performance isn’t lacking, either.

Ian and Richard had a tough beat back to Hamble after the Weymouth race, finding that the boat had plenty of power, especially with the water-ballast, and the ability to punch into a steep sea.

Would the Dehler 30 OD suit you and your crew?

Whichever way you look at it, the Dehler 30 is not a cruising boat. That’s not what it was designed for.

Nonetheless, if you like speed and efficiency and don’t need a shallow draught, there’s much to be said for a boat like this.

It narrows the gap between monohulls and multihulls such as the Farriers and Dragonflies.

With a monohull you have the draught and with a multihull you have the beam, though with Farriers and Dragonflies it can be reduced for marina berthing.

For dinghy sailors moving up and who don’t want to lose the fun of a flat-out planing reach, I can see the Dehler 30 being a real hit.

It would make a fast, fun weekender and coastal cruiser as well as an offshore racer.

19 March, 2016   / March 19, 2016, at about 3:43 am local time, a passenger plane "Boeing-737-800" belonging to the airline "flydubai" crashed during a second landing approach at the airport of Rostov-on-Don. All 62 people aboard the plane were killed. Our condolences to the bereaved families and relatives.

History of Rostov-on-Don

Foundation of rostov-on-don.

Long before the foundation of Rostov-on-Don, the first Russian emperor Peter I wanted to build a fortress on the site of the present city to protect the southern borders of the Russian Empire from the raids of the Ottomans and Crimean Tatars. But because of the Treaty of the Pruth, which ended the Russo-Turkish War of 1710-1711, it became impossible as the treaty was a political victory for the Ottoman Empire.

By the decree of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna dated December 15, 1749, the Temernitskaya customs house was founded here, at the mouth of the Temernik River, on the right bank of the Don River in its lower reaches, about 46 kilometers from the mouth of the river, where it flows into the Sea of Azov. In the spring of 1750, a pier, a warehouse, a quarantine, and a garrison barracks were built at the customs.

In 1756, the international “Russian and Constantinople Trading Company” was opened here. Temernitsky port became the only Russian port in the south of the Russian Empire through which trade with the countries of the Black, Aegean and Mediterranean Seas was carried out.

In 1760-1761, the construction of the fortress began to protect the lower reaches of the Don. The garrison of the fortress numbered more than four thousand people. The fortress was originally named after Metropolitan Demetrius of Rostov and Yaroslavl (1652-1709) canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church.

Over time, houses for merchants and clergymen, shops, taverns, a prison, and other buildings were built here. The port of Rostov quickly became known in Russia and abroad, attracting more and more Russian and foreign merchants. Foreign goods went from here to the depths of Russia: to Moscow, Smolensk, Kazan, Orenburg, Vyatka, and to numerous fairs.

The fortress had a large garrison, was armed with 238 guns and for half a century was used as a rear base for the Russian troops. The fortress of St. Demetrius of Rostov played a significant role during the Russian-Turkish wars of the second half of the 18th century. During the Russian-Turkish war of 1768-1774, it served as a base for the offensive against Azov.

Rostov-on-Don in the late 18th - 19th centuries

By the end of the 18th century, because of the annexation of the territory of the Crimean Khanate to Russia, the fortress lost its strategic importance, the fortifications were dismantled. In 1779, Catherine II allowed the Crimean Armenians to settle here. They founded the settlement of Nor-Nakhichevan to the east of the fortress. Today, it is the Proletarsky District of Rostov-on-Don.

The name of the fortress and the settlement subsequently changed: the fortress of St. Demetrius, the fortress of Demetrius of Rostov, the Rostov fortress, just Rostov, and finally, to distinguish it from the old Russian town of Rostov the Great located near Yaroslavl, Rostov-on-Don.

In 1811, Rostov received its coat of arms, which depicted a fortress tower, symbolizing the town’s past. After eliminating the danger from the Ottoman Empire and the development of the southern trade routes, Rostov-on-Don found itself in the center of the country’s foreign trade. In 1836, a new Rostov customs house was built, and in 10 years the trade turnover of the Rostov port increased by about 30 times.

By the middle of the 19th century, it became one of the largest export points for grain and iron in the Russian Empire. The rapid growth in freight traffic caused a strong impetus to the development of river shipping and shipbuilding. Rostov was famous for two fairs, some of the biggest in the country. Rostov also had the largest fish market in Russia.

In 1875, with the construction of the Rostov-Vladikavkaz railway, the opening of the first drawbridge over the Don and the first large railway station, Rostov-on-Don turned into one of Russia’s largest railway junctions. In 1887, it was included in the Don Cossack Host Oblast (an administrative-territorial unit populated mostly by Don Cossacks and governed under special conditions), which was the impetus for the further development of industry.

According to the 1897 census, 119,476 people lived in Rostov-on-Don. The following native languages were mentioned: Russian - 94,673, Jewish - 11,183, Ukrainian - 5,612, Polish - 1,444, Armenian - 1,182, German - 1,182, Tatar - 1,172.

Rostov-on-Don in the 20th century and beyond

During the Russian Civil War of 1918-1920, Rostov-on-Don played a prominent role as one of the centers of the anti-Bolshevik White movement. The Soviet period in the history of Rostov-on-Don began on February 11, 1920. In the late 1920s, active construction began in Rostov-on-Don. In 1926, the plant “Rostselmash”, a giant of the Soviet agricultural machine building, was founded.

On November 29, 1935, the country’s largest drama theater with an auditorium for 2,200 seats was opened in the city. The theater building was designed in the shape of a giant tractor. On September 13, 1937, Azov-Black Sea Krai was divided into Krasnodar Krai with the center in Krasnodar and Rostov Oblast with the center in Rostov-on-Don. In 1939, Rostov-on-Don was the 4th most populated city in Soviet Russia - 510 thousand people.

During World War II, German troops occupied Rostov-on-Don twice: in the fall of 1941 and in the summer of 1942. On November 20, 1941, the Germans entered the city for the first time. A week later, on November 28, Soviet troops recaptured the city during the Rostov offensive operation. The liberation of Rostov was the first significant victory of the Red Army in the initial period of the war.

Rostov-on-Don remained Soviet until July 1942, when, after the failure of the Red Army offensive near Kharkov, the German command launched an offensive in the Kuban and the Caucasus. On July 24, 1942, the 17th Army of the Wehrmacht entered Rostov-on-Don. On February 14, 1943, after the victory at Stalingrad, during the general retreat of the Wehrmacht in the southern sector of the Eastern Front, Rostov-on-Don was finally liberated from German troops.

The war caused great damage to Rostov-on-Don, about 12 thousand houses were destroyed. On August 9, 1945, a general plan for the restoration of the city was approved. It was included in the list of the 15 largest and oldest Russian cities to be rebuilt in the first place. By the early 1950s, it was almost completely done.

In the 1970s, the reconstruction of Rostselmash and other large enterprises of the city was carried out. As a result of mass housing construction, large residential areas Western and Northern were built. The area of the city’s housing stock more than doubled in three decades. In 1987, Rostov-on-Don became one of the cities of the USSR with a population of over one million.

After the collapse of the USSR, Rostov-on-Don became one of the largest business centers and the 10th most populous city in Russia. In 1999, its 250th anniversary was celebrated, a lot of architectural monuments were restored.

In 2000, Rostov-on-Don became the center of the Southern Federal District (about 11% of the total population of Russia). In 2008, it was awarded the honorary title “City of Military Glory”. In 2018, Rostov-on-Don hosted five matches of the FIFA World Cup.

Rostov-on-Don is located in the southeastern part of the East European Plain. The city is mostly located on the right bank of the Don River, on the left bank there are some industrial enterprises, shopping and entertainment centers. The distance to the Azov Sea is about 46 km, to the Black Sea - 380 km, to Moscow - 1,130 km. Unofficially, Rostov-on-Don is called the “Gateway to the Caucasus” and the “southern capital of Russia”.

The climate in the city is temperate continental. Winters are mild and with little snow; the average January temperature is minus 3.0 degrees Celsius. Summers are hot, long and dry, with a predominance of sunny weather; the average July temperature is plus 23.4 degrees Celsius.

The historical coat of arms of Rostov-on-Don, adopted in 1811, depicts a tower symbolizing a barrier from the raids of neighboring peoples (the Crimean Tatars and Turks) and weapons of these peoples as war trophies. The City Day of Rostov-on-Don is celebrated on the third Sunday of September.

Rostov-on-Don is one of the largest economically developed cities in the south of Russia. The products of “Rostselmash” (agricultural machinery) cover more than 50% of the Russian market, “Don Tobacco” - 12%. “Rostvertol” is the only enterprise on the territory of the Russian Federation that produces helicopters for various purposes, “Yug Rusi” is known as the largest producer and exporter of sunflower oil.

This city is the largest transport hub in the Southern Federal District of Russia. Platov International Airport, commissioned in December 2017 for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, is located about 40 km from Rostov-on-Don and offers regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Astrakhan, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Sochi, Dubai, Istanbul, and a number of other cities. Several federal and regional highways pass through Rostov-on-Don, including the M-4 “Don” highway, which runs along the outskirts of the eastern side of the city.

Too low traffic capacity of streets and lack of good transport interchanges plus a large traffic flow, especially during peak hours, are the main reasons for frequent traffic jams. Also, the problem of parking for personal vehicles is very acute, especially in the old part of the city, in the center. Cars parked near office buildings occupy a large area of the roadway, which also leads to the creation of traffic jams.

Many in Russia know the criminal nickname of this city: “Rostov - papa” meaning “Rostov - dad” (similar to the nickname of the city of Odessa in Ukraine - “Odessa - mama” meaning “Odessa - mom”). Rostov-on-Don and Odessa became the southern capitals of the criminal world during the late Russian Empire.

At the end of the 19th century - the beginning of the 20th century, a lot of criminals led a nomadic, vagrant lifestyle. Therefore, when they were detained without passports and asked about their parents, one could hear the answer: “Rostov is my dad, Odessa is my mom.” This is one of the versions of the origin of these nicknames. Today, Rostov-on-Don is not included in the list of cities with the highest crime rate in Russia.

The city has more than 800 objects of cultural heritage, including 470 architectural monuments, 55 archeological monuments, 106 monuments of monumental art and military glory. The historic center of Rostov is especially rich in monuments of architecture.

Rostov-on-Don is also one of the largest jazz centers in Russia. In the early 1980s, the country’s first “professor of jazz” Kim Nazaretov opened the department of pop-jazz music at the Rostov Conservatory.

Main Attractions of Rostov-on-Don

Bolshaya Sadovaya Street - one of the oldest and most beautiful streets in Rostov-on-Don, where a lot of city sights are located. Its length is about 4 km. Most of the buildings are old mansions where the families of local merchants and industrialists once lived. Numerous sculptures and monuments are installed on this street.

The Rostov City Hall (1899), an architectural monument of federal significance and one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, is located on this street (Bolshaya Sadovaya Street, 47). The two-story Margarita Chernova House, gifted to this famous actress of the 19th century by her rich admirer (Bolshaya Sadovaya Street, 27/47), can be considered a real gem of the street.

The main entrance to the Central City Park named after Maxim Gorky, the oldest park in the city, can also be found on this street. At the entrance there is a bronze statue of Vladimir Lenin on a granite pedestal.

Rostov Regional Museum of Local Lore - one of the largest museums in the south of Russia representing the nature, culture and history of the Rostov region. The most interesting exposition can be found in the hall “Treasures of the Don Burial Mounds” - about 2,000 gold and silver items of the 4th century BC - 8th century AD. Embankment of the Don River . Named after the Russian admiral Fyodor Ushakov, it is the main resting place for locals and visitors of Rostov-on-Don. At any time of the day, you can ride a boat or motor ship here. For walking, there is a pedestrian zone about 2 km long with a lot of original sculptures and monuments. Another attraction of the embankment is the light and music fountain. All city holidays and festivals are held on the embankment.

Underground passages decorated with mosaics - a unique monument of Soviet art created by master mosaicist Yuri Palshintsev in several underground passages at the intersections of the main city streets in 1979-1984. The best time to look at the mosaics and take photos is late in the evening, when passers-by are not in the way.

Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (1854-1860) - the main Orthodox church in Rostov-on-Don, one of the main architectural and historical monuments of its center. This five-domed church built in the Russian-Byzantine style resembles the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. The height of the bell tower (1875-1887) is 75 meters. Abandoned Paramonov’s Warehouses - a huge warehouse complex built almost in the very center of the city in the middle of the 19th century. Despite its dilapidated state, this monument of industrial architecture is one of the favorite places of locals and tourists. Monument “Tachanka-Rostovchanka” - a monument in honor of the First Cavalry Army standing at the southern entrance to Rostov-on-Don. The tachanka is a spring cart with a machine gun attached to it. It is one of the main symbols of the Russian Civil War. The height of this very picturesque monumental sculptural composition is 15 meters.

Levberdon - an informal name for urban areas stretching along the left bank of the Don for almost 10 km. Almost all of this territory is occupied by free and paid beaches, walking areas, recreation centers, restaurants, summer cafes, clubs, and other entertainment establishments. This area also attracts fishing enthusiasts.

Don Military History Museum - an interesting museum located in the village of Nedvigovka, about 35 km west of Rostov-on-Don. The model of the old fortress is of great interest. British tech giant Mike Lynch, his lawyer and four other people are among those missing after their luxury superyacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

Lynch, who was acquitted in June in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among the six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

One body has been recovered, and police divers were trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 163 feet off Porticello, near Palermo, where it had been anchored.

It had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck the place precisely where the 184-foot British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another superyacht nearby wasn't as badly damaged and was able to rescue some of the 15 survivors.

The Bayesian was known for its single 246-feet mast, one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites list it for rent for up to about $215,000 a week.

One of the survivors, identified only as Charlotte, said she had momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoting the mother.

Eight of the 15 people rescued and taken to shore at Porticello were hospitalized. One body was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for, said Luca Cari, a spokesperson for the Italian fire rescue service.

Rescue crews located the vessel and deep-water police divers were trying to access the hull, Cari said. The operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Fisherman Francesco Cefalu’ said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on site for three hours, but didn't find any survivors. ”I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

He said he had been up so early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.

The seven who weren't rescued included one crew member and six passengers, the coast guard said.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.

He's yet to endorse Trump's latest campaign -- but, his rally appearance proves Kanye's at least Trump curious this time around.
