This 80-meter-long superyacht, which Lakshmi Mittal belongs to one of the richest men in the world, is a true masterpiece on the waves, embodying pure luxury and state-of-the-art technology.

In Puerto Portals where yachts, upmarket restaurants and expensive boutiques dominate the scene, the Aalto was the star before heading to the calmer waters of Formentera. A perfect place for Mittal and his guests to take a break from the hustle and bustle and enjoy nature.

Yacht Aalto Mallorca

Formentera - An oasis of peace

While Puerto Portals is known for its lively, glamorous scene, offers Formentera The exact opposite: peace, nature and pristine beaches. No expensive boutiques, no flashy lights, just crystal-clear water and white sand. This is where the Aalto now, perfectly embedded in the landscape - far away from the hustle and bustle that Mittal has experienced in recent stations.

Luxury and sustainability - hand in hand

The Aalto stands not only for luxury, but also for Sustainability . The yacht is equipped with Solar panels and innovative Emission reduction technologies which makes it one of the most environmentally friendly ships in its class. This is exactly in keeping with Lakshmi Mittal's style: state-of-the-art technology and luxury, coupled with an awareness of sustainability.

A floating reminder of the wedding of the century

The Aalto is an impressive symbol of Mittal's penchant for luxury - and it also recalls the lavish wedding of his daughter Vanisha Mittal . This took place in the year 2004 in France and went down in history as one of the most expensive weddings of all time. The price? Around 41 million euros . Thousands of guests from all over the world were invited to Versailles and into Vaux-le-Vicomte Castle invited to celebrate this pompous event.

Among the guests were Bollywood celebrities such as Shah Rukh Khan who is considered a close friend of the family, and the Australian singer Kylie Minogue who performed during the ceremony and put on a show that is said to have cost a million dollars alone. Many international business people and politicians also mingled with the guests, making the wedding one of the most glamorous events of the decade.

Yacht Aalto Mallorca

Facts and figures about the Aalto

The Aalto which in the year 2007 in the renowned Oceanco shipyard was built in the Netherlands, with its 80 meters one of the largest yachts in its class. She offers space for up to 12 guests which are accommodated in 9 elegant cabins. The yacht has a Infinity pool a Fully equipped spa and a Home Cinema - and that's just the beginning. Water sports enthusiasts can look forward to Jet skis and diving equipment to explore the surroundings of Formentera.

But the real specialty of the Aalto lies in its combination of luxury and environmental awareness. Solar panels and ultra-modern Emission reduction technologies make it one of the most environmentally friendly superyachts on the water. Luxury and responsibility - exactly the philosophy that Lakshmi Mittal lives by.

Business and privacy

For Lakshmi Mittal, the Aalto is not just a place to relax, but also a floating office. In the middle of the sea, the yacht offers the ideal environment for confidential business meetings in absolute privacy. Whether in front of Ibiza or now off the calm coast of Formentera - Aalto is the perfect retreat for the billionaire steel mogul.

About the owner - Lakshmi Mittal

Lakshmi Mittal one of the richest men in the world, is the head of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal . His estimated assets are over 14 billion US dollars . In addition to his business successes, Mittal is also known for his luxurious lifestyle. The legendary wedding of his daughter Vanisha in 2004 and his impressive luxury yacht Aalto are symbols of his global influence and his penchant for extravagance.

Aalto for sale - luxury for bargain hunters?

Who just  79.750.000 €  loose and don't know where to put it, watch out: The  Aalto  stands according to   Superyacht Times actually for sale! Yes, you read that right. For the price of an average soccer player or a handful of luxury properties, you can snap up this floating paradise and cruise the world's oceans like Lakshmi Mittal herself. Don't worry, the infinity pool and spa are included - and you don't have to pay extra for the solar panels either.

But before you jump the gun, there's a little bonus: the annual maintenance costs. If you want to call the Aalto your own, you can expect annual costs of around €10-12 million for maintenance, crew and fuel, based on a new price of around €112,000,000 - peanuts, right? That's more or less pocket money to keep this gem shining and let the captain steer it through the most beautiful ports in the world. But hey, if you can afford a yacht, that's just peanuts, right?

So, if your piggy bank is overflowing and you're planning a "small" investment in high-tech luxury, why not go for a superyacht?

Among the titans spotted in the island paradise, the largest include the 364-foot Alaiya , reportedly owned by Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal; the 295-foot Lauren L belonging to Igor Kolomoisky, one of Ukraine’s wealthiest men; and the 279-foot Bold , owned by German business tycoon Guido Krass.

While the Maldives is a favorite vacation spot of the elite, it has also become a safe haven for superyacht owners  fleeing sanctions  from the ongoing war in Ukraine. After Russia invaded its neighbor, several countries, including the United States, placed sanctions on oligarchs with political ties, causing the wealthy businessmen to move their vessels to neutral territories, where there is little chance of confiscation.

To escape the authorities, many oligarchs have fled to the Maldives and more cosmopolitan, Russian-friendly spots such as Dubai to protect their assets. Russian billionaire Alexey Mordashov’s  vessel Nord   was spotted in the archipelago last November after departing from Hong Kong.

It’s still too early to say how long the vessels will remain in the area, but as long as the war continues, the country continues to be a refuge for the oligarchs’ superyachts.

Ambani's Jets, Mittal's Yachts: Luxurious Rides Of The Ultra-Rich

Who Owns What

Who Owns What

Private yachts and customised planes. Check out the travel modes of the jet set that double up as meeting venues, party hangouts and spots to host special occasions. For those Indians — and those with desi roots — who are counted among the world’s wealthy, island hopping in Europe aboard their customised 200-feet yacht or taking off in their bespoke jet across the continent are but a way of putting a monogram on their commute. Take a look at the rides of the jet set:

Lakshmi Mittal’s Amevi

Lakshmi Mittal’s Amevi

In 2014, this London-based billionaire was spotted relaxing on the Greek island of Mykonos, dressed casually in a white T-shirt and baggy shorts. A newspaper report speculated that while Mittal lounged on the beach alongside other tourists, his 262-feet-long yacht Amevi was parked in the waters nearby. Some amenities on board: Sun decks, a heated swimming pool, a cinema, a gym, a massage room, a hairdressing salon as well as a unique, stabilised pool table to name a few.

Mukesh Ambani’s Boeing Business Jet

Mukesh Ambani’s Boeing Business Jet

More than a decade ago, it was reported that Ambani gifted his wife, Nita, a private jet on her 44th birthday. It was said at the time that this jet was “custom-fitted with an office and a cabin with game consoles, music systems, satellite television and wireless communication. It also has a master bedroom, a bathroom with a range of showers and a bar with mood lighting”. As his personal ride, Ambani reportedly favours a Boeing Business Jet. “Most often, they want access to the same amenities in the air.” That’s how the airplane maker describes their customer’s requirement, a.k.a, a flying home, as that’s what’s wanted.

Ravi Ruia’s Sunrays

Ravi Ruia’s Sunrays

“The ultimate guest and owner’s yacht.” That’s how the captain of Sunrays, delivered in March 2010 describes it. According to a description of the yacht available on the Oceanco’s website, “The upper deck is given over to the owner’s suite and an adjacent VIP suite that can be combined to create one expansive living area. Both suites have fold-down sea balconies. The owner’s exterior foredeck hosts a whirlpool and sunbathing area. The remainder of the yacht’s accommodations for up to 16 guests is on the main deck with one VIP stateroom and four guest cabins.” The large dining room can be converted into a video conference room with the optional use of the adjacent library. Foldable sea balconies provide guests unimpeded views while dining.

Kumar Mangalam Birla’s Cessna Citation

Kumar Mangalam Birla’s Cessna Citation

A blog published by an apparel brand, owned by the Aditya Birla Group, documented the private jets of India’s rich and famous. The listicle included the jets owned by Birla, the Group’s chairman. It said, “Few people know that this sharp, business-minded entrepreneur also has a sweet tooth, when it comes to sweet flying machines, with his Gulf Stream (G100) and Cessna Citation...It’s believed that Citations are the world’s most established, well-liked and most trusted fleet of business jets. The jet has high-tech design of pilot-friendly flight decks and luxury cabin interiors. Birla is often spotted taking a ride in his luxurious aircrafts.”

Sunil Vaswani’s Platinum

Sunil Vaswani’s Platinum

This Dubai-based billionaire’s yacht is apparently a fixture in the Mediterranean and was even spotted at the French Riviera around the time that the Cannes Film Festival was held this year, with others in the list for company. Vaswani, who is considered to be one of the richest Indians in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, was once described as he “who lives on multiple continents and sails the Mediterranean each summer in an all-purpose luxury yacht”. The logo of the Stallion Group, which he heads, adorns the yacht.

Ratan Tata’s Dassault Falcon 2000

Ratan Tata’s Dassault Falcon 2000

Tata’s love for aviation is an open secret. But he is perhaps one of the handful of billionaires in the world who not only owns a private jet, but even flies one. “A lot of people know that Ratan Tata owns a Dassault Falcon 2000 private jet but, what they do not know is that since Tata is a trained pilot, he even flies his own private jet and other jets owned by the Tata group,” said an earlier report.

Reuben Brothers’ Siren

Reuben Brothers’ Siren

“While watching the boat slowly taking shape in Rendsburg, we suddenly became aware of how seductive and mysterious she seemed. We just knew then that we had to call her SIREN and we are absolutely delighted with the result.” That’s the quote attributed to the owner of the 241 feet-long Siren, on the website of Nobiskrug, the German company that built the yacht. Presumably the owner quoted in question is either David Reuben or his brother Simon. Commonly referred to as the Reuben Brothers, they trace their roots back to Mumbai, and are counted among the UK’s richest individuals. Theirs is an award-winning superyacht with a foldable helicopter platform, that can double up as “a sundeck, a dance floor or a stage”.

Adar Poonawalla’s Gulfstream G550

Adar Poonawalla’s Gulfstream G550

Earlier this year, this scion became the first Indian to take delivery of a fully customised, ACH145 helicopter by Airbus. While his new ride, with a seating capacity of eight is great for covering relatively shorter distances, his Gulfstream G550 aircraft is reportedly his transportation of choice for long-haul journeys. In an earlier interview, Poonawalla had said, “With a 13-hour range, it (his jet) can take me to anywhere in the world with a single halt.” The report further added, “The plane can also come in handy when he (Poonawalla) craves continental food and in case he wants to fly in Michelin star chefs to cook for his friends and him.”

Lakshmi Niwas Mittal wurde am 15. Juni 1950 in Sadulpur, Indien geboren.

Unternehmertum

Will luxury yachts find a home in India's coastal waters soon?

The Modi government plans to change this state of affairs with a policy to promote “yacht tourism” and personal yachting.

  • Country’s rich and famous would no longer have to rush to Europe and US for getting their yacht experience. They would soon be able to own, move and park their yachts along India's coastline. India plans to build marinas at several locations along the coast, minister Sarbananda Sonowal said.

New Delhi: One of the world's most expensive yachts is owned by an Indian-origin industrialist. But steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal would probably think twice before parking his superyacht in Indian waters.

Reason: The country with a 7,500-km-long coastline doesn't have a single international-standard marina. This means rich Indians who own yachts have no choice but to park them in Europe, Singapore and Dubai, rather than Mumbai or Goa.

The Modi government plans to change this state of affairs with a policy to promote “yacht tourism" and personal yachting.

The ministry of ports, shipping and waterways (MoPSW) proposes to build marinas at several locations along the eastern and western coastlines that would provide global quality infrastructure for sailing and parking yachts from across the world, union shipping minister Sarbananda Sonowal said.

“We are adding a new dimension to our plan to promote cruise tourism. This includes developing the ecosystem for yachts with the development of marinas along the Indian coastline. This will be developed on the lines of facilities existing in several European countries," Sonowal said in an interview.

A policy for yachts will be included in the Cruise India Mission that aims to promote cruise tourism by developing airport-like facilities at ports to attract international passengers. The Mission is expected to be launched later this month.

“The plan for marinas or small port-like facilities for yachts and smaller boats is also aimed at providing people who move to Dubai and Singapore to get this yachting experience. The programme is not only aimed at facilitating luxurious yachts but is also aimed at creating ample employment opportunity within the country with our estimates suggesting that each yacht would require at least 20 crew members.

Also read: The dictator’s son wanted his yacht back. That’s when trouble started

"So, even if initially we have facilities like that in Croatia that has marinas supporting 15,000 yachts, enormous employment opportunities would be created," Sonowal said.

Shipping secretary T.K. Ramachandran said these marinas would be developed along all harbours. The ministry will identify key locations for putting up the infrastructure on a public-private partnership model.

People aware of the development said marinas in places like Goa, Mumbai and other places frequented by business leisure travellers would also host customers and immigration facilities, while effort would also be made to rope in the private sector to commercially develop the area around marinas with hotels, shopping arcades and recreational and business and conference facilities.

“We hope that first set of marinas would come up soon. This should align with development of facilities for promoting cruise tourism," Sonowal said.

To be sure, owning a yacht isn't cheap – they can cost anything upward of $15,000 to $1.5 billion (the price of Eclipse, the world's most expensive) – but the shipping ministry says yacht sales have been rising in India in recent years. Mostly, yachts are imported.

The Indian yacht market generated a revenue of $115.1 million in 2023 and is expected to reach $162.9 million by 2030, according to report by Grand View Research, an India and US-based market research and consulting company. However, this is tiny by global standards – just 1.2% of the global yacht market in 2023. China is the fastest growing market in Asia Pacific, projected to reach $810.0 million by 2030.

Super-rich Indians who own yachts include industrialists Mukesh Ambani , Laxmi Mittal, Gautam Singhania, Anil Ambani, and film star Salman Khan, industry reports said.

Also read: India plans ship building JV between state-run refiners and Shipping Corporation of India

According to the report, Indian nationals own about 1% of all yachts that are 40 meters or longer.India's superyacht industry is still in its early stages, with fewer than 300 boats registered in the country. This includes around 120 luxury yachts and over 150 speed boats.

In India, limited infrastructure is available for yachts to park at Mumbai, Goa, Kochi and Chennai. At several other places, yachts are parked at ports having temporary arrangements for yachts.

Some of the key global companies operating in the yacht market are Damen Shipyards Group, Azimut Benetti Group, and Ferretti S.p.A. The government wants some of these companies to set up shop in India and offer their yachts and yachting and services here.

Yachting has tremendous potential for growth in India where this becomes a status symbol for the upwardly mobile, said AnilDevli, CEO of Indian National Shipowners Association (INSA). "But in all this, the government should ensure that any policy on yachts should give a boost to domestic production of these at our shipyards. Also, the government should look at easing visa regulations to bring in technicians and non-engineering workers who are conversant to servicing these complex vessels," Devli said.

It is expected that ministry would also discuss security-related issues with agencies including coast guard and Indian navy to facilitate uninterrupted movement of Yachts along Indian coast. A protocol would also be developed to facilitate this service.

“If you develop facilities as per global standards, then definitely you get all the stakeholders around," Sonowal said.
