Oceanco Project Tuhura gigayacht canoe

Moscow-born designer Igor Lobanov first burst on the superyacht scene as the owner’s representative for the groundbreaking motor yacht A , which was designed by Philippe Starck, with naval architecture by Martin Francis, and built and delivered by Blohm + Voss in 2008. From concept to completion, the process took four years.

Lobanov went on to establish Lobanov Design in 2007, a dynamic studio with roots in everything from transportation design to architecture. His multi-award-winning Jubilee , which  launched in 2017 from the Oceanco shipyard, remains the largest superyacht to come out of the Netherlands, a country known for its large-yacht craftsmanship.

What was the owner’s original brief for Jubilee ?

I never met the owner, and he never made a comment on the exterior. The client liked our first new-build yacht, the [281-foot] Oceanco Y078, but thought it was too small. I supplied more concepts, the client picked one, and that is Jubilee . The proportions of all the decks remain unchanged since those original renderings.

Oceanco Jubilee

Was that your simplest design job ever?

I don’t think so, because when I first designed the concept in 2010, no one believed in it. They couldn’t make sense of the layered decks. The only person who understood it was the client. I love the idea that from afar it looks like a much bigger yacht, but the nearer you get you realize its actual size. That’s what we wanted to achieve—the feeling and scale of a [525-foot] yacht in a modest one [361 feet].

You describe Lobanov Design as a studio for the future—what do you mean?

It means that what we designed 10 years ago will still look futuristic in a decade. And I’m not joking. Look at concepts like Star or Tuhura . I designed Tuhura in 2012, but I’m sure that in a couple of years people will look at it as something that is realistic, something that can be built.

What projects are you currently working on?

We’re collaborating with CRN shipyard on a [246-foot] project , Begallta . Engineering has already started, but it doesn’t look like anything we’ve done before, and that was really important to us. We’re also working with other shipyards on smaller boats, and with a couple of private clients on medium-sized yachts .

Lobanov Design, a relatively young design studio based in Spain, has teamed up with Dutch yacht builder Oceanco to create an innovative new sailing yacht concept that takes inspiration from classic sports cars and aims to reduce fossil fuel usage by up 30 percent.

lobanov yacht design

Baptized Double Luck or ?+?, which means “88” in Mandarin Chinese, the yacht measures – you guessed it – 88 meters in length (289 feet). The name has been chosen because 8 is considered the luckiest number in Chinese culture, symbolizing fortune and good luck.

Boasting naval architecture by Oceanco and Dykstra Naval Architects, Double Luck is presented as an ultra-quiet yacht that features a two-story winter garden, a beach club, and a huge swimming pool.

It features a sleek and minimalist exterior design, with a smooth sheer line, long curving side lines, and minimal sharp edges, similar to the elegant bodywork you see in the automotive industry. Moreover, the yacht’s distinct profile is highlighted by the superstructure styled like the aerodynamic cockpit of a coupe.

lobanov yacht design

“ We wanted the yacht to give a feeling of the best classic British Gran Turismo cars of the past,”  Lobanov Design has said.  “The bow has a little reverse inclination, while the sheer line smoothly goes down towards the low aft.” Designers have envisioned the vessel with two exterior colorways, namely black with copper details or white with yellow gold accents.

As far as interior design is concerned, the sailing yacht concept features a calm and serene atmosphere, inspired by Asian Zen design. The renderings do not show many images of the interior, but Lobanov Design mentions it has used soft shapes, organic materials, and flowing lines on all surfaces to create symmetry and a unified style in order to achieve that feeling of peace and balance.

lobanov yacht design

“The silence, the balance, and the connection with the nature surrounding is a very important part of sailing. It’s something that has to be considered when you want to design a sailing yacht,”  Lobanov commented.

The design studio has chosen to center the interior around the vessel’s two exterior masts, and used them as the focal point for design elements like the forward Zen garden or the main saloon, thus creating a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

lobanov yacht design

Other highlights of the project include a two-deck winter garden, a large aft-deck swimming pool, and sea terraces in the beach club.

Sustainability and environmental impact were also important focus points when creating this concept. Double Luck features the Dutch shipyard’s emission-cutting LIFE Design to decrease fuel consumption, paired with Dykstra DynaRig sailing system for optimal power recovery. Oceano claims this particular yacht project would be able to cruise in silence using 30% less fossil fuel. Moreover, the sailing system is so easy to use that a single crew member can operate it within six minutes.

Oceanco teams up with Lobanov Design for 115m Tuhura concept

Polynesian canoes and Maori explorers provided the inspiration for Oceanco ’s latest concept, the 115 metre Tuhura, which was revealed today (February 27) at the Dubai International Boat Show .

This radical design comes from the drawing boards of Lobanov Design — the studio behind Oceanco’s 110 metre flagship yacht Jubilee — while the interior is courtesy of Achille Salvagni and the hybrid propulsion system was developed in collaboration with BMT Nigel Gee Naval Architects .

“Tuhura is a simple idea,” explains Igor Lobanov. “The thought was to take a natural shape similar to those seen in the earliest canoe-type craft and augment it on a larger scale, using modern technology.” The name Tuhura reflects this inspiration, as it is derived from the Maori word for ‘discover’.

The reverse angle bow and transom continue the use of symmetry in Lobanov’s conceptual work, previously seen in the 132 metre Star . Oceanco adds that the concept could be adapted to suit any length from 80 metres to 120 metres.

This ancient canoe shape conceals a multitude of modern technology — for example the horizontal hull windows are made up of a series of dots that stop prying eyes from looking in, but still allow guests on board to enjoy a seamless view out to sea, as if through a normal pane of glass.

The Salvagni interior is every bit as impressive as the exterior, with the Pacific islands and East Asia providing the influence for the décor, which features brushed teak, tatami floors and bronze metalwork.

“Tuhura was conceived for a dynamic owner — nevertheless the timeless sense of peace and calmness are the main characteristics,” adds Salvagni. “This is reflected in the humble elegance and sensuality of the primitive organic shapes echoed throughout.”

The skylounge is a great example of these themes with teak stalactites and stalagmites dividing the central fireplace from the intimate dining area.

The task of designing the propulsion system for such an avante-garde yacht fell to British naval architects BMT Nigel Gee, who chose a hybrid, contra-rotating Azipod system from ABB that should achieve a top speed of 18 knots.

The studio’s yacht design director James Roy says that this drivetrain has proven its efficiency in the commercial sector. “There is a synergy between the efficiency of the hull form, and that of the propulsion system,” he adds.

The technical infrastructure of Tuhura was developed by Dutch firm Van Berge Henegouwen’s custom division LuxLab, who explain that the system would be able to monitor on-board behaviour and automatically adjust the music and temperature accordingly. Other highlights on board include a 360-degree cinema room, a foredeck hammock and a superyacht spa pool on the sundeck.

“This is a technically challenging and intriguing project,” concludes Oceanco’s commercial director, Dirk de Jong. “It is 180-degrees different from our previous two yacht collaborations with Lobanov Design studio, yet Tuhura is still 100 per cent Oceanco DNA.”

Shhh! Ohtani chase kept quiet by design

Blue jays stay tightlipped in pursuit, while dodgers manager admits to their meeting.

Keegan Matheson

Keegan Matheson

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Silence is golden and secrecy is sublime.

Standing in the eye of the biggest, boldest pursuit in franchise history, the Blue Jays aren’t saying a word. Even the name “ Shohei Ohtani ” is spoken carefully, each syllable tiptoeing gently to the next.

Don’t rock the boat. Don’t wake the baby.

The secrecy with which baseball’s brightest star lives his life has taken over his free agency, which is bubbling to a boil here at the Winter Meetings. Earlier this offseason, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that it would be “held against” potential suitors if news leaked that he’d visited a specific team.

Well, it’s happening.

Every good drama has a shocking confession, and this one came from Dodgers manager Dave Roberts on Tuesday afternoon, admitting that he and members of Los Angeles’ front office had met with Ohtani in recent days. It all went very well, the veteran manager thought, and besides, the news would get out eventually.

“Clearly,” Roberts said, “ Shohei is our top priority .”

This was a wailing siren through the silence, because even following reports that Ohtani had toured Toronto’s training facilities in Dunedin, Fla., over the weekend, the Blue Jays refused to give that fire any oxygen, instead letting it live as a detail and nothing more.

Soon after Roberts dropped that nugget, though, Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes stood before a throng of cameras -- less than 50 feet from Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins doing the same -- and struck a much different tone. Gomes acknowledged the comment made by his manager, said he was surprised that it was made and went no further. No comments on Ohtani, no comments on a meeting that may or may not have happened.

That toothpaste isn’t going back in the tube.

Across the room, Atkins spoke vaguely, dancing in the shadows between questions. It’s the same approach he took Monday, when his in-person media availability was suddenly shifted to Zoom , where the GM was cryptic with details as he sat in front of a blank, white wall, refusing to answer where in the world he was.

“Everything that we’re doing to make the team better, to the extent that we will keep private, we will do,” Atkins said. “Meetings that occur, don’t occur, I’m not going to get into the specifics of.”

It’s remarkable to watch this happen in real time, a big league GM sidestepping questions not as standard practice, but as an act of strategy that fans are suddenly praising. There’s an elephant in the room, but Atkins will not confirm whether elephants do or do not exist.

“There’s an incredible amount of energy, an incredible amount of buzz around the game and around several potential opportunities, certainly one that is historic, potentially,” Atkins said.

Atkins is built for this game. He’s the Shohei Ohtani of secrecy.

The Blue Jays’ GM went as far as saying that they are “fortunate to be one that’s being considered,” but offered no details about the reported visit to the club’s player development complex over the weekend.

Manager John Schneider did the same, saying “we meet with lots of players” and sticking to the script throughout his media availability. When a reporter joked that Schneider looked tanned when asking about his whereabouts and involvement in said meeting, Schneider just cracked another smile.

“I live in Florida,” he said.

The logic and logistics of it all point toward a decision coming soon from Ohtani. The Blue Jays and Dodgers are clearly among the front-runners here, and while it’s unclear what impact Roberts’ revelation and recent reports will have on Ohtani’s decision, these two clubs are clearly involved in the final sprint. Others, including the Giants, Cubs and Angels, have also widely been linked to this historic chase.

When this news breaks, the landscape of Major League Baseball will tilt in an instant. Until then, it’s one of the biggest secrets in baseball history and the Blue Jays aren’t making a sound.
