10 Best Catamarans Under 200k

10 Best Catamarans Under 200k

Are you looking for a catamaran to enjoy with your friends and family on weekends, or summer vacation, or maybe to liveaboard? If yes, catamarans are large yachts that provide many luxuries, but that doesn’t mean you will have to destroy your savings since there are many great choices under 200k. Of course, quality isn’t cheap, especially when it comes to a life of luxury on the ocean. However, we have carefully selected the best catamarans under 200k that are both elegant and economically viable.

Price: Used From 150k to 400K

The Lagoon 380 is one of the best catamarans ever produced. By 2013, over 700 of these boats had been delivered globally. It is regarded as the baby of the Lagoon company, as it is the smallest but very comfortable even for a liveaboard family. This boat stands at 37 feet and is regarded as the benchmark for 40-and-under feet catamarans.

It was designed by the renowned French-based naval architectural company, VPLP, this boat features a simple and efficient deck layout, a circuit vision in the rounded saloon, a cockpit equipped with a real outdoor lounge area, a structural beam that provides easy access to the sea and life raft, three or four cabins which are very bright (due to the large hull windows) and can accommodate up to 10 people. The galley is located between the cockpit and the saloon. The engine room is distanced from living areas and perfectly insulated for maximum comfort.

You can find a Lagoon 380 in good condition for around 200k, which is a phenomenal deal. At this price range, this is an affordable luxury because it is comfortable with enough amenities. In addition, it has amazing interior woodwork designed by X. Fay. The design, technology, speed, safety, and great navigation make it a whole lot more appealing. The vertical glazing provides better protection against the sun and optimizes space and headroom. The Lagoon 380 is definitely worth your time and money; make sure to check one out if there is one for sale in your area. Also, because this catamaran was very popular when it was released, there are many for sale on the used market. Personally, I believe that the Lagoon 380 is the best catamaran under 200k .

Nautitech 40

Price: Used From 180k to 500k

At 39 feet, this catamaran has redefined the living space of an affordable cruising catamaran. Designed by French naval architect Marc Lombard, it features a deck saloon combined with a cockpit lounge, which is quite unusual as they both suffer from lack of space. The deck, cockpit, saloon are all on one level. It’s elegant, has great light, and is extremely maneuverable with two helms for exceptional visibility.

This boat is priced between $200k and $500k on the used market, depending on location, built year, and condition. It is equipped with 3 or 4 cabins depending on the version with a huge owner’s cabin on the port side. The cockpit is covered, which provides adequate protection in all kinds of weather; this especially useful if you are looking for a cruising catamaran all under 200k. Also, it offers space for up to 12 people, so you will never be short of space. It also has an amazing deck layout with the opportunity to sunbathe. The elegant line gives the boat a sporty look. This catamaran is beautiful, and if you can make a small compromise to your budget, you should clearly check one out; you definitely won’t regret buying one.

Nautitech 40 Catamaran

The Leopard 38 price ranges from around $170k to $250k, depending on age, condition, and location. This boat is very easy to maneuver(even with a limited crew). The 38 feet catamaran features a large cockpit with an outside dining area, versatile ergonomic seating for up to eight guests, and open transoms to make boarding easy. Equipped with four double cabins and 2-berths, a spacious saloon, and an aft-facing galley with a serving window overlooking the cockpit area.

As you can see, this is a beautiful catamaran from the exterior and then down to the interior with high-class woodwork. Also, thanks to its built quality, ample space, and the abundance of natural light thanks to its huge windows, it is ideal to be used as a liveaboard catamaran.

Fountaine Pajot Belize 43

The Belize 43 is equipped with clever tricks for greater sailing ease and can be easily be operated by just a couple of people. The sails are easy to hoist and haul; it also offers a great stable platform without compromising sail performance.

The boat features four large double cabins and 2 very pleasant single cabins alongside four heads. The hull also offers plenty of storage space and has a maximum capacity of about 10 people. Joubert-Nivelt designed this boat to be as light as possible without having to compromise stability and easy to maneuver.

With a starting price of around $200k, this catamaran is said to be the fastest in her class. You are guaranteed to spend exceptional day(s) or week(s) on this boat.

Fountaine Pajot Lavezzi 40

This 40 feet boat is big, comfortable, and well suited for life on board. The exterior is designed by the same person who designed  Belize 43,  Joubert-Nivelt. However, the interior design was done by O. Flahault.

The helm station with a deflector that provides weather protection for the person at the helm. Each hull is spacious with double cabins that comfortably accommodate eight people. This catamaran is definitely one that you should consider since it is both spacious, luxurious, and quite affordable.

Broadblue 38 Catamaran

Price: Used From 150k to 400k

Broadblue is a United Kingdom-based company at Thornham Marina, Emsworth. The company is famous for achieving the perfect combination of performance, speed, luxury liveaboard, comfort, and safety. This 38-foot catamaran price ranges from around $150k to $400k. Designed by Stuart Davidsen, it has lots of spaces, storage or not. The saloon and cockpit provide spacious comfort for 6 people, with all-round visibility whether at sea or in the harbor.

The most popular layout of this catamaran comes with 3 double cabins and 2 v-berths and, as usual with cats, a very spacious saloon. The boat has superb woodwork in the interior with lots of amenities that could afford one the life of luxury when cruising. This a very popular catamaran on the used market because of its great value-for-money. Honestly, this design looks a bit dated on the outside, but they are very comfortable and well-built.

MacGregor 40 Catamaran

Price: Around 100k

The MacGregor 40 was designed by designer and builder Roger MacGregor; as you probably understood already, he also named the boat after himself. With a price of around 100k on the used market, this 40-foot cat is astonishing for many things. It is a fast catamaran with cabins and has enough space for a weekend trip with a simple mast raising system. However, its sensitivity to moderate winds, lack of storage space, and difficulty of handling are reasons people become wary when getting the MacGregor 40.

The galley and saloon are well equipped with the finest of craft from woodwork down to the electronics; you would certainly love the deck layout for sunbathing and a whole lot of other water sporting activities. This catamaran is for someone who is an adrenaline junkie looking for the fastest catamaran under 200k but not necessarily the most comfortable one.

Gemini Legacy 35

Price: Used From 150k to 250k

This is the most successful cruising catamaran ever built in the US. Since it was first built in 1981, this American-made boat has been the most family-friendly performance cruising catamaran in the world. The Legacy 35 has more interior space than most 40-foot monohulls and costs a little less than an average monohull, while it stands at only 35 feet. The cost varies from $150k to $250k, depending on the dealer, age, condition, etc. Like most catamarans, it is easy to maneuver, fast, family-friendly, great to liveaboard but affordable.

The hallmark for a Gemini design is the shallow draft. Legacy 35 has a 34-inch draft that allows the boat to be pulled right up next to the beach or anchored in small protected coves.

Lagoon 35 CCC

Price: Used From 120k to 200k

The premier multihull in the world, the Lagoon 35 CCC, is built in the United States to have a hull constructed using the SCRIMP infusion method of elimination. The ‘CCC’ in front of the name stands for Coastal Cruising Catamaran. This boat is a collaboration of Jeanneau and TPI, then conceived by American architects Morelli and Melvin, who have expert knowledge in the field of designing catamarans. Morelli and Melvin chose performance over comfort. Starting at $120,000, this boat combines an excellent layout and high-quality finish with a capability of sailing fast.

The 35 feet stylish and beautiful catamaran is complemented by the size of spaces in the boat from the large cockpit that can comfortably seat eight people. It has three or four cabins with an amazing deck layout and a comfortable view, even though the designers never prioritized that. The exterior, though, is just as sleek as the interior and one reason the boat will be enticing. This boat is as affordable as luxury can get. Whether you are looking for a weekend catamaran to spend some quality time with the family or as a liveaboard, this catamaran will be perfect for you.

Final Thoughts

A great cruising or liveaboard catamaran for under 200k? Is that even possible? Many people don’t think so; I believe I just proved them wrong! As you can see, some of these catamarans cost more than 200k on the used market, but I made sure the starting price is under the 200k mark, as the title suggests. However, do not be swiped away by the good price and rush to your checkbook. Take your time, take her out for a spin, and get her surveyed; it’s worth the extra cost to get your mind at ease because a hidden problem can cost tenths of thousands of dollars. After you make sure that everything checks out and you are aware of any problems, you can write the check and take her home; or make her your home, it’s up to you!

Best Production Cruiser Under $200,000: Hunter 356

  • By Tim Murphy
  • Updated: December 17, 2001

new yachts under $200k

C01BOTY08.jpg

In the pages of Cruising World, we’ve often lobbied boatbuilders for more affordable, seaworthy cruising boats of modest size that, in the spirit of the 1960 Pearson Triton, open the possibilities of cruising to more sailors. Seven of the boats we sailed come closest to answering that request. These are series-built sloops of traditional cruising design marked by moderate displacement-to-length and sail area-to-displacement ratios as well as simple rigs and sail plans. Of these seven boats, three are priced below the $200K mark.

The Etap 34s is a sprightly sloop from Belgium that’s built with enough foam between its hull skins to keep floating–and sailing–even after it’s fully flooded (though we didn’t get the chance to test it that way). The Beneteau 393 is a spacious, two- or three-cabin sloop modeled on last year’s successful 473.

But the boat that stood out was the aft-cockpit Hunter 356, a boat Ralph called “a paradigm shift for Hunter.” He liked the influence he saw from Glenn Henderson, a yacht designer known for his performance boats; for a little over a year, he’s been Hunter’s in-house designer. “Henderson’s input has really come through. This girl, driven hard for a shoal-draft boat, balanced nicely and drove fairly easily.”

Alvah found the cockpit layout clean. “I liked that big stainless-steel arch with the main traveler on top of it. It was a good handhold and a good location for cruisers to add wind generators, solar panels, or antenna, and the stainless-steel work was good.”

As on all the boats, including those that took prizes, there were a few items the judges would have preferred to see different. “I was concerned about those large lockers on the sugar scoop that drain into the bilge,” said Alvah. “They’re well gasketed, but I think the first thing anyone would need to do is get bigger hinges and better latches and make absolutely sure they’re not opening that kind of area that low.” It’s a trait that would be more serious if the 356 were intended as an all-oceans passagemaker, but Hunter calls it a coastal cruiser. The European Community rates it “Category B,” with usage limited to seas of four meters (about 13 feet) and winds of Force 8 (40 knots).

Compared with Hunters past, many interior features on the 356 were upgraded: Corian countertops, solid teak woodwork instead of veneers, radiused corners with fiddles. “The galley was squared away,” said Skip. “Nice freezer, good insulation. The Adler/Barbour compressor under the settee had good ventilation and very good access to work on it.”

Skip liked the electrical installation, too. “Hunter’s put antichafe around all the holes in all the bulkheads that have plumbing or wiring coming through, something most boats twice the price, three times the price, don’t do. Also, they left lots of slack in the wire leads at the electrical panel so you could pull them out and work on them.” The helm drew praise from Ralph: “I liked their steering concept: a drag-link system with a sealed rudder tube that ties the deck and hull together. No leaks, no need for a stuffing box.” Alvah liked that the wheel was small enough to walk around.

Carol summed up her impression of the 356: “It was a comfortable boat to sail. The design concept was stability with a shoal keel, and I think it met that.”

In today’s new-boat marketplace, this 35-footer, priced at $114,000, stands out as a remarkable value.

We Never Underestimate Your Dreams

10 cruising catamarans under $200k.

Traffic has increased quite a bit recently with links to some of my articles posted by a popular blogging couple, The Wind Travelers , who are syndicated in Cruising World and have large followings on social media sites like Facebook. One of the posts they linked to is almost always my most popular week in and out, my list of 10 Best Center Cockpit Sailboats Under 200k . It is with a bit of mixed feelings I see the popularity of this post because I do not agree with the viewpoint it proposes or is interpreted to propose especially for a sailing family like the Wind Travelers. I do not think they made the right choice in their boat purchase.

The better choice for the Wind Travelers would have been a catamaran. If you are just a couple with a tight budget of under $200k, then yes, I think a center cockpit monohull fits the bill. Or if your plan is a no nonsense circumnavigation, a monohull or whatever size and price makes sense – the longest your budget can afford. But for a growing family cruising the Caribbean, a catamaran makes so much more sense in terms of comfort, draft, privacy, and more. Please see my list of reasons why a catamaran might be better than a monohull . Below is a list of 10 catamarans for the cruising family with a budget under $200,000 in alphabetical order.

  • FP Belize 43
  • Leopard 3800
  • Seawind 1200

This list was composed from a current scan of available multihulls priced slightly above or below $200,000. Please feel free to comment in and defend the choice of the Wind Travelers. Or chime in with additional suggestions for family cruising cats. If you have a higher budget, you might like my over $300k catamaran list which has a bit of overlap depending on what vintage model you are targeting.

6 Popular Boats For Full-Time Living (Affordable Options)

' src=

It’s a big investment to get a boat you can live in full time.

Here are some of the more affordable boats out there that we can fully recommend.

Hang with us as we guide you through some of the most popular and affordable boats for full-time living.

Table of Contents

Don’t Get “Sticker Shock”:

If you are choosing to live aboard a boat in you will need to brace yourself for the expense.

While this article is showing you “cheap” or “inexpensive” boats to live on, you should not be comparing them to other boats.

We are not talking about small boats here, but boats you can live on, remember.

Daily use boats do not afford the luxuries that a live-aboard boat can. This makes them more expensive. When looking at live-aboard boat prices, you will want to compare it to traditional living expenses. All choices for live-aboard boats are expensive and you will most likely be looking for a used, possibly even a “project” boat.

If you are looking for a new boat, or even a luxurious used boat you will need to be prepared to spend $100,000 or more depending on the size and type of boat you want.

An Affordable TRAWLER You Can Live On

A trawler is an inexpensive option that allows for generous space. Trawlers are also durable and can take large amounts of use.

The wider hull of a trawler allows for roomy interiors that include bigger kitchens, more spacious sleeping areas and more room. This boat is also stable and accessible. This makes getting on and off the boat much easier.

They also have less draft than boats with deep hulls like sailboats and lower clearance on top for bridges.

Some cons of a trawler include noisy engines that are slower moving. They also consume large amounts of fuel.

Trawlers also will need maintenance just like any other vessel and can often be older, so they might require more maintenance up front.

1. Albin North Sea Cutter

new yachts under $200k

North Sea Cutters made by Albin are large, spacious and elegant. These boats offer multiple comforts and sleeping areas.

Depending on the year you select, you could have multiple cabins and many places that convert into sleeping areas. You can purchase a used Albin boat that costs anywhere from $20,000 to over $200,000. These prices vary depending on space, age and amenities offered.

Models older than 2000 will often range between $20,000 to $80,000 and they can get more expensive from there.

An Affordable YACHT You Can Live On

2. beneteau swift trawler.

new yachts under $200k

These boats can be swift, fuel efficient, and stable. They offer a spacious deck as well as spacious living quarters.

They often come with more than one cabin and enough room to move around and house more than one person.

The Beneteau Swift Trawlers are more expensive than the Albin models and will likely cost you more than $100,000.

If you are looking for a brand new Beneteau, you could be looking at a base price close to or even over $500,000.

So you definitely want to get a used model if you are looking for a cheaper alternative here!

2 Affordable SAILBOATS You Can Live On

Sailboats can be a relaxing option for your live-aboard vessel. Sailboats come with an open deck and oftentimes have plush cabins situated in their hull.

Some of the appeals of a live-aboard sailboat are that you will spend less money on gas. They are also quieter than their motorboat counterparts.

If you choose to live-aboard a sailboat, you will want to make sure that you have a motor available in case you do not have a cooperating wind.

3. Island Packet 35

These boats are smaller than the trawler options and are better suited to housing smaller families.  They have one main living and sleeping quarters so there is not a lot of privacy offered. These will be ideal for a couple.

These are very popular choices among sailing cruisers and they were designed with sailing in mind. They are very user-friendly sailboats.

The prices on an Island Packet range close to $100,000.

You will be looking for a used vessel, though, as these were not manufactured after the mid-1990s.

4. Cabo Rico 38

Cabo Rico boats were designed with luxury in mind and it is reflected in their prices.

Older models from the 1980’s and 1990’s range between $80,000 and $100,000 while newer models that were made in the early 2000s can easily reach over $300,000.

The main goal of these boats was to increase the appeal of their aesthetic.

Like the Island Packet, these boats are more ideal for smaller couples. This boat also has an abundance of clever storage spaces that will help you maximize the space that you have.

Affordable MULTI-HULL Boats You Can Live On

new yachts under $200k

Multi-hull catamarans can be either double or triple hulled.

The benefit of a multi-hulled vessel is the stability offered as well as the possibility for separate living spaces.

A catamaran offers a wide and spacious deck, however, the living spaces in the hulls are generally smaller than they would be on other vessel types.

The major disadvantage of a multi-hull option will be price. Because the construction of these boats is similar to building two separate boats, you should expect to pay more. If you want to live on a multi-hull vessel you could be looking at spending $100,000 or more.

Like a sailboat, you might consider a used catamaran.

In addition to a higher purchase price, these boats also might require two slips in a marina which can make them more expensive.

5. Lagoon 380

new yachts under $200k

The Lagoon 380 is a smaller catamaran which is not the most common. The Lagoon 380 is the smallest catamaran in the Lagoon fleet.

Unlike some other inexpensive options, these are still being produced which offers you the chance to buy new, which means that you will be more likely to customize your boat.

This boat comes with a full bath and a large queen-sized berth or the chance to instead get four cabins. Stowage on this boat is impressive and it comes with many lockers and storage space.

The boat truly is impressive for its small size and will be comfortable for living in. The price of this vessel can range from $170,000 to over $200,000 depending on the year and the options available.

Other Lagoon options can be more expensive but are also great live-aboard vessels.

6. Leopard 44

new yachts under $200k

If you are looking for a more luxurious catamaran, then you will want to look at the Leopard 44.

The most inspiring part of the design of the Leopard 44 is the inclusion of two cockpits. This allows sailors to change where they steer based on the position of the sun and adds additional comfort.

This boat also provides edging on the surfaces so that you can feel where the boat ends. Attention to detail was key when crafting the Leopard 44.

Like most catamarans, this vessel is also spacious and provides comforts and amenities that will be useful when living on board.  These include multiple berths and cabins that are well suited to housing more people.

The average price for this vessel is higher than the Lagoon 38 can range between $280,000 and $400,000.

Affordable HOUSEBOATS You Can Live On

new yachts under $200k

If you plan on living aboard a boat without doing a lot of traveling, a houseboat might be ideal for you.

These allow for plenty of space, but are bulky and are not very efficient so they are generally used for living while moored and never actually venturing out on the water.

The most common form of houseboats is built onto pontoon boats. These boats can even offer full enclosures on the deck with plenty of windows and light.

Another downside to a houseboat is their price. Because these boats offer the most space and comfort they are pricey.

Houseboats can offer anything from multiple rooms to decks. They are essentially a house that floats.

Houseboats are often custom designed and are not generally offered as a part of a fleet or boating line. Prices also range wildly and could be anywhere from $30,000 used to over one million dollars.

When looking at houseboats you also have to consider location as a decision that needs to be made.

Houseboats are not designed to move so in addition to the expense of the boat, you are also often looking for a permanent place to put it, and that can be more costly than a marina or other available options.

What About The Bigger Yachts?

Even more expensive than the multi-hull vessel is the luxury yacht.

This is not an inexpensive option. These are the most expensive choice as they are essentially floating hotels.

For this reason, we have opted out of listing options for the luxury yacht, but they are an option that is available for consideration.

So How Do I Choose The Right Boat?

It is most important to choose your boat based on desired lifestyle, budget, and skill level.

If you do not want to worry about learning to sail, then you should look into the power boat options.

You also want to make sure you pick the appropriate size.

If you plan to go down rivers often, you might not want a boat that is too wide or too tall. This can make river navigation tricky and stressful.

You also want to make sure that while you are conscious about how the size of your boat is external, you allow for enough space internally.

No matter what type of boat you choose you will be giving up some luxuries and living a more minimalist lifestyle. You need to look at what your minimum size requirements will be and start there.

Another thing that is extremely important when choosing is the condition of the boat. Because these types of boats are so expensive, you will most likely be looking at used options.

This means that you will want to get your boat fully inspected before you buy it.

Much like you would get an inspector for your home, you are able to hire marine inspectors who can see things on your vessel that you can’t.

The most important places of consideration are the hull and the engine.

Even a tiny hairline crack in the hull can expand and get worse over time. These are also the most dangerous because you are less likely to see them and get them taken care of.

A marine inspector will also be able to give you a rundown on the vessel and this might help you plan for future expenses and even to negotiate a better price.

In addition to this, when buying a used boat you want to make sure you do not buy a boat that is exactly your budget. You will want to save at least %10 of your budget for possible issues and immediate maintenance needed.

Maintenance will be an ongoing expense that you will have to plan for in order to maintain the integrity of your boat.

Is It Possible To Live On A Boat Full Time?

Living on a boat full time is completely possible if you know what you are doing.

Where to Moor Your Boat:

One of your most major considerations will be where to keep your boat. Many places require marinas to have a liveaboard license and many of the places that do have long waiting lists that could last years.

If you know you want to live aboard a boat full time you will want to start checking into places right away. It would also be wise to not close a deal on a boat until you know you have somewhere to put it.

You will also want to consider the location of where you are mooring your vessel.

If you choose to dock your boat in a marina you will be more likely to have 24/7 access to both electricity and water. This is not true if you choose to live at anchor or on a mooring bay.

This can make a big difference in the comforts afforded while you are living on your boat.

Another consideration to make is the ease of getting on and off your vessel. If you do not moor in a marina you could be relying on a dinghy to get on and off your boat and this can quickly become a hassle, especially if you are transporting things with you as well.

Live-aboard marinas often provide more comfort to you, such as cable, Wi-Fi, or even laundry.

Marina’s do come with a higher cost, so you will have to decide if this is worth it to you.

Comfort Issues To Consider

One major challenge of living on a boat is space. Even with a spacious boat, you will always be living in close quarters to your boat-mates.

Depending on the size of boat you get, you could be asking your partner to move every time you want to move to a different room or area of the boat.

This can quickly get annoying and you will want to make sure that you and your partner both understand the reality of the situation.

Even if you plan to live alone you can be looking as small and confined spaces.

One good way to know if you can handle the day to day challenges of a liveaboard lifestyle is to try it out first. There are plenty of ways to rent a boat to test the waters before you take the plunge.

Another challenge is living without the comforts that most people have every day. Most liveaboards that are affordable do not have hot showers or laundry.

They also usually have small kitchens and bathrooms with small amounts of storage space. If you are a person who likes to have everything and minimal living is not something that sounds appealing, living on a boat is likely not for you.

To keep your space comfortable, you might want to also consider a dehumidifier to keep your humidity in check.

Important Safety Considerations

new yachts under $200k

One major thing to make sure you plan for is safety. Like all boats, you will need to have the proper life preservers and flotation devices. This is a legal requirement on all water vessels.

In addition to the proper flotation devices, you will want to make sure you have all other required safety equipment.

This includes a fire extinguisher, a carbon monoxide detector in all enclosed areas, a flare, an emergency kit, and a first aid kit.

You should also have anything needed to repair unexpected maintenance issues. Depending on where you are, you will want to make sure you can deal with any issues that might arise until you can get to help.

In addition to the standard safety precautions, living on your boat comes with a few more.

If you are planning to live on your boat, and travel, you will want to make sure you are confident in your abilities and your boat itself before you get too far away from shore. It is wise to spend a few months cruising near land and shores before you attempt any long trips.

You also need to ensure you have the proper communication equipment on board.

Depending on how far from shore you get, you might not be able to communicate using traditional methods such as a cell phone.

A cell phone will be less effective the farther away from shore and any cell phone towers you get.

You should be sure to have satellite communications, a marine radio, and a Ham radio on board.

You will also want to make sure you regularly get your boat inspected and perform any routine maintenance. A boat that is fully functioning and well maintained will be the safest.

How Much Will Living On A Boat Cost Me?

Despite the large upfront cost, living on a boat can be cheaper than living in a traditional manner.

Costs that come with a live-aboard boat can include, but are not limited to:

  • Insurance: Just like with a home, car, or daily use boat you will need to pay for insurance. The live-aboard insurance rate will be higher than just recreational boating insurance. This insurance can sometimes compare to home insurance.
  • Moorage: Like insurance, live-aboard moorage is more expensive than traditional insurance. You will also need to go to a marina that holds a live-aboard license.
  • Mortgage Payments: If you cannot pay for your boat out of pocket, which is likely, you might have to make loan payments on it. Depending on what you spent on your vessel this could be costly.
  • Maintenance Costs: After your initial purchase you will still need to spend money on boat maintenance. This expense will vary based on the age of the boat, how often you perform regular maintenance, and how you use the boat itself.
  • Utilities: Based on how you have decided to live on your boat, you might have utilities or additional costs with the marina. This will likely still be less than you would pay in a traditional living situation.
  • Provisions and Entertainment: Just because you don’t live in a traditional manner, you will still need to buy traditional items such as food, toiletries, and entertainment. If you live completely without the comforts you are used to, your experience will not be very pleasurable.

Most importantly while looking at expenses, you need to make sure you are budgeting and stick to it.

If you are not able to afford your lifestyle, you will not have a lot of immediate options.

If you choose to travel while you sail, budgeting will be even more important. Traveling often does not allow for a traditional job and you do not want to overspend if you do not have any money coming in.

If you know this is the lifestyle you want to live, you might consider going all in. Many people sell their homes in order to live this lifestyle.

What Boat Should I Get For Full-Time Living?

Before you buy a boat to live aboard, you need to be clear about your needs.

There are a lot of options to choose from and this is not a decision to rush through. One of the first things that you need to decide when picking a boat is whether you want a motorboat or a sailboat.

A Sailboat Or A Motorboat?

Sailboats are not just appropriate for ocean living, they are also good for lake, river, or bay living. Sailboats are quieter than motorboats and are generally more economical because they use less gas.

One issue with sailboats is that they require more skill to handle and they might not be ideal for a singular person.

Like any boat, you will want to ensure that you are choosing the right size. If you plan on using your sailboat in a river, you will want to think about the required clearance when it comes to bridges.

Motorboats with ample cabin space can also be ideal for full-time living on a lake, river or bay.

These boats are often very spacious and easy to handle. Unlike sailboats, you do not have to take classes or training to be able to maneuver or handle the vessel. Motorboats that you can live aboard can range from trawlers to yachts to certain types of catamarans .

Motorboats do not rely on the wind and this can make them ideal for a boat you want to do both living and traveling on.

The issues with motorboats is that you will need to consider gas and other expenses that come with running an engine.  They are also louder than sailboats and often their engines are placed close to living quarters. This can make sleep difficult if you are moving.

Below are some inexpensive boat options that would be perfect for full-time living .

What Are The Benefits?

Even though this all might seem very expensive, there is a large list of benefits as well.

Living on a boat can be cheaper than living in a traditional home, especially in high priced areas.

The main reason that you should live on a boat is the freedom and adventure that comes with it.

You would be able to take your home on vacation with you or just pick up and go to a new location.

You are also more likely to meet adventurous and like-minded individuals who will most likely have interesting stories to tell.

One of the best parts about living out on the water is the views that you will see. There is nothing quite as beautiful as waking up to a sunrise over the water.

Superyacht Captain Under Investigation Over Death of Billionaire Mike Lynch and Six Others

Italian prosecutors are investigating the captain of a luxury yacht that sank at almost lightning speed off the coast of Sicily “for manslaughter and shipwreck,” according to local reports confirmed by Reuters .

Autopsies are due to be soon carried out on the bodies of those who died in the disaster , including billionaire U.K. tech magnate Mike Lynch, who was only weeks earlier acquitted of fraud by a U.S. court over the $12 billion sale of his company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011. Among the other victims were his 18-year-old daughter Hannah , as well as Lynch’s lawyer and one of his team’s key witnesses during those proceedings.

A New Zealand national, 51-year-old James Cutfield had served as captain of the 184-foot superyacht Bayesian, which sank within just 60 seconds on Aug. 19 after being hit by a “tornadic waterspout” during a storm while moored about half a mile from the port of Palermo.

Under maritime law, Cutfield holds final responsibility for the well-being of all passengers and crew aboard the vessel. He has already been interrogated twice by police, and authorities have not yet indicated whether they plan to place any of the other eight surviving members of Cutfield’s crew under investigation.

Inside Story of Billionaire Whose Luck Ran Out on Superyacht

Though it was ultimately a sudden turn in the weather that saw the Bayesian swallowed by the waves, Ambrogio Cartosio, head of the local public prosecutor’s office, recently said it was “plausible” human error had also played a role in the boat’s sinking.

Local press has further quoted nautical architect Franco Romani, a member of the team who designed the yacht, saying there was a possibility the vessel took on water at great speed due to a side hatch having been left open.

Fifteen of a total of 22 people aboard the boat survived its sinking, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and another woman, named as Charlotte Golunski , who saved her 1-year-old daughter’s life by holding the baby over her head above the waves.

In a bizarre twist to already tragic events , Lynch’s co-defendant during his recent trial, Stephen Chamberlain, also died in a U.K. hospital within just hours of the boat’s sinking, succumbing to injuries sustained in a car collision two days earlier.

Bodies of Autonomy founder Mike Lynch and his daughter recovered from sunken Bayesian yacht

Mike Lynch, the U.K. investor and founder of IT company Autonomy, has been identified as one of two bodies recovered from the Bayesian, the yacht that sunk off the coast of Sicily early Monday, according to several reports coming out of the country that cite the chief of Civil Protection, Salvo Cocina. The boat, registered to Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, quickly capsized in the early hours of Monday after it was struck by a tornado-like water column. In a tragic coincidence, Chamberlain was hit by a car last Saturday and died of his wounds earlier this week.

HARVEY CEDARS - An 18-year-old was killed Sunday afternoon after being struck by a boat's propeller, according to authorities.

Police said that Zeina Mahafzah of Wayne was on a raft being pulled by a boat. While the 18-year-old was attempting to board the vessel, she was struck by the boat’s propeller and sustained fatal injuries, police said.

Harvey Cedars police have said the death was due to a “tragic boating accident.”

The accident occurred at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the water off Sunset Park in Harvey Cedars Boro, according to State Police, who are heading the investigation.

Captain of Sicily Yacht Under Investigation for 'Negligent Shipwreck and Homicide': Reports

New Zealander James Cutfield, 50, is reportedly under investigation after seven people died in the sinking on Aug. 19

new yachts under $200k

The captain of the sunken Sicily yacht is under investigation after seven people died in the tragedy , per local reports.

The Bayesian — a 183-foot-long superyacht — is said to have sunk quickly on Monday, Aug. 19 around 5 a.m. local time off the coast of Porticello after what the Italian coast guard called a “violent storm.”

Authorities have said that 22 people were aboard, including 12 passengers and 10 crew. Fifteen people were rescued and authorities have since identified the seven people who died.

Per Italian news agency Ansa , the boat's commander, James Cutfield, 50, of New Zealand, is now officially under investigation for "negligent shipwreck and multiple counts of negligent homicide."

The agency stated the captain had been questioned by prosecutors from the Termini Imerese Prosecutor's Office on Sunday, Aug. 25 for the second time in a week, with topics focusing on the position of the keel, whether the hatch was open, and when an alarm was raised amid the worsening weather conditions.

Ansa added that during the two-hour session on Sunday when the captain was reheard, authorities reconstructed the approximately 32 minutes that passed from when the sailboat began taking on water to the firing of the first distress flare at 4:38 a.m.

The prosecutor had already outlined this timeline of events during the press conference Saturday, Ansa continued.

An Italian criminal lawyer told PEOPLE that being placed under investigation "does not imply guilt (innocent until proven guilty) and does not automatically mean charges will be brought against the person."

"It does mean that the people under investigation are able to appoint their own medical expert to the autopsies that are taking place their week, a very useful defense measure if they are later formally charged at a later date," they added.

Local newspaper Giornale di Sicilia reported that the commander had been invited to appoint a defense lawyer ahead of the autopsies, which are expected to begin on Monday, Aug. 26 and continue through Thursday, Aug. 29, per the outlet.

The update comes after Sicilian authorities held a press conference on Saturday, Aug. 24 to identify the victims.

Cartosio confirmed that British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch 's body had been found on Aug. 22, before the body of his 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch was recovered the following day on Aug. 23.

He also said that on Aug. 22, authorities recovered the bodies of prominent New York City attorney Christopher Morvillo and his wife, Neda , and Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy .

Lynch, 59, was acquitted of fraud and conspiracy charges just two months before the sinking, and a source close to the survivors told PEOPLE passengers on the yacht were celebrating Lynch’s recent acquittal when the storm hit.

Morvillo, also 59, worked on the case, and Bloomer, 70, was a close friend to Lynch. Chef Recaldo Thomas' body was also recovered in the days after the sinking.

Italian prosecutors have placed under investigation the captain of the superyacht that sank off Sicily last week in a storm, killing British tech magnate Mike Lynch and six other people, a judicial source said on Monday.   James Cutfield, a 51-year old New Zealand national, is being investigated for manslaughter and shipwreck, the source said, confirming earlier reports by Italian media.   Being placed under investigation in Italy does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will necessarily follow. Notices to people under investigation need to be sent out before authorities can carry out the autopsies on the bodies of the dead.   The decision was made after Cutfield was interrogated for a second time. Reuters has been unable to contact Cutfield.

Six killed in shipwreck

The British-flagged Bayesian, a 56-metre-long yacht, was carrying 22 people when it capsized and sank on Monday within minutes of being hit by a pre-dawn storm while anchored off northern Sicily.   Fifteen people survived, including Lynch's wife, whose company owned the Bayesian. Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, was among the victims.   While the yacht had been hit by a sudden meteorological event, it was plausible that crimes of multiple manslaughter and causing a shipwreck through negligence had been committed, the head of the public prosecutor's office of Termini Imerese, Ambrogio Cartosio, said on Saturday.

Cutfield and his eight surviving crew members have made no public comment yet on the disaster.   "The Bayesian was built to go to sea in any weather," Franco Romani, a nautical architect who was part of its design team, told daily La Stampa in an interview published on Monday.   He said the yacht could have taken on water from a side hatch that was left open.

These Chinese nuclear submarines show it's serious about countering US dominance under the waves

  • China has built upon decades of earlier failures to field a growing submarine force.
  • Its attack boats and boomers have grown much quieter and harder to track.
  • The fleet build-up shows the importance China believes subs will have in future conflicts.

Insider Today

Two days before US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in China this April for meetings with the country's leader and other high-ranking Chinese officials, China's People's Liberation Army Navy released footage of a nuclear submarine firing a ballistic missile.

The video, which also showed three other submarines making up the carrier Shandong's strike group, was released as part of celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of the country's navy. Two months after its release, a Chinese ballistic missile submarine surfaced in the Taiwan Strait , near Taiwan's Kinmen islands .

The publicity and show of force are the latest evidence of China getting serious about its ambitions to build up its nuclear submarine fleet .

China has built upon decades of earlier failures to field a growing submarine force whose boats are more capable against the US's advanced subs in a sign that China believes its ambitions may come down to an undersea fleet that can sink rivals and deter enemies from nuclear attack.

Its vast shipbuilding industry is cranking out nuclear submarines at a fast clip, with new designs also in the works.

Nuclear attack submarines

China's interest in nuclear submarines dates as far back as the mid 1950s, immediately after the US Navy commissioned the world's first nuclear submarine, USS Nautilus . But with the Soviet Union unwilling to transfer nuclear propulsion technology to China, the Chinese had to start from scratch.

China's first attempt at creating a nuclear-powered submarine was focused on developing a nuclear attack submarine (classified as SSN) because designing a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine would have required developing a naval reactor, submarine-launched ballistic missile, and underwater launching system all at once.

The effort was given the green light in 1958, but construction on the first boat would not begin until 1968. Though launched in 1970, construction was further delayed by the upheaval of the Cultural Revolution, and the vessel was not commissioned until 1974.

Known as the Type 091 , it was designated as the Han-class by NATO . Measuring from 321 to 350 feet long and displacing over 5,000 tons submerged, it was armed with six torpedo tubes at the bow that could fire at ships or other submarines. In all, five Type 091 SSNs were built between 1968 and 1990.

The Type 091 class was nowhere near as combat-capable as its peers, largely due to the fact that they were the first nuclear-powered submarines China ever built, and because they had no assistance in doing so; the sub's reactor must be stable enough to continuously provide mechanical power to turn its propellor and to generate its electricity. These subs were substantially louder than most of their contemporaries and were viewed as considerably outdated.

Related stories

Type 091 subs did undertake multiple deployments and were involved in a number of incidents. They also received upgrades that improved their performance in the early 2000s. Ultimately, however, they served more as stepping stones towards future nuclear subs than as front-line assets. Two of the five subs have since been retired.

China's second-generation SSN, the Type 093 , proved a drastic improvement over its predecessor. Designated the Shang-class by NATO , development on the subs originated in the 1980s, but construction on the first sub only began in 1998, four years after a decision by Chinese leaders to proceed with building a new class of SSNs to better face the challenges of the coming century.

Unlike the Type 091, the Type 093 benefitted from technology transfers from Russia. The Russian Rubin Design Bureau also reportedly consulted with the Chinese on the class's overall design. By 2003, the first sub was launched, and in 2006, it was commissioned into service.

At 351 feet long and with a displacement of about 7,000 tons, the Type 093s have six torpedo tubes capable of firing wired, acoustic, and wake-homing torpedoes. They are also capable of launching YJ-18 and YJ-82 anti-ship cruise missiles, and are equipped with bow and flank-mounted sonars.

Seven Type 093 SSNs have been built across three variants; two Type 093s, four Type 093A s, and at least one Type 093B . The Type 093A is an upgraded design with improved quieting — noise is one of a submarine's biggest giveaways, which can be detected by passive sonar and hydrophones . The Type 093B is a further upgraded version, equipped with a pump-jet propulsor and the ability to deploy a towed sonar array. It is expected to play more of a land-attack role with long-range cruise missiles.

Nuclear ballistic missile submarines

Also known as "boomers" and given the classification "SSBN," nuclear ballistic missile submarines are perhaps the greatest nuclear deterrent any nation can possess. Intended to stay submerged for months at a time on a patrol, they carry nuclear missiles with long ranges and preserve a country's ability to retaliate if they are attacked with what's known as a second-strike capability. Deployed submarines are much more difficult to destroy compared to ICBM silos and strategic bombers.

China's first SSBN, the Type 092 (designated Xia-class by NATO), was based on the Type 091 SSN. Launched in 1981 and commissioned in 1983, only one was built. Measuring about 393 feet long and with a submerged displacement of about 8,000 tons, it was armed with six torpedo tubes and 12 launch silos for SLBMs.

Like the Type 091, the problem-plagued Type 092 is regarded as little more than a test case.

Despite being commissioned in 1983, it was only active from 1987 onwards. It had a terrible safety record, with reports of it suffering from radiation leakage, and was also considerably loud — so much so that there was little doubt it would be detected by its adversaries.

The SLBM it carried, the JL-1 , was also comparatively unimpressive. Not fully operational until 1988, it was unable to carry multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs), and instead only carried a single nuclear warhead ranging from 200 – 300 kilotons. Its range was also only about 1,056 – 1,335 miles, which severely limited its ability to strike the most relevant targets.

Consequently, the Type 092 never made a single deterrent patrol, and instead spent most of its time either within Chinese territorial waters or docked in Chinese naval bases. For all its inadequacies, however, the Type 092 did act as something of a stepping stone for the development of China's next SSBN, the Type 094 .

Designated as the Jin-class by NATO, the Type 094 is a vast improvement over its predecessor, with a new propulsion system, improved electronics and sensors, and, perhaps most crucially, lower sound levels.

At 450 feet long and with a submerged displacement of around 10,000 tons, the sub's armament is similar to the Type 092 (six torpedo tubes and 12 SLBM launchers), but it carries a different SLBM: the JL-2 .

Capable of carrying a one megaton nuclear warhead or 3-8 MIRVs, the JL-2 was introduced in 2015, and has an estimated range of between 4,970 - 5,592 miles. In 2022, it was reported that China began deploying the new JL-3 SLBM on its Type 094s.

Able to carry a single 1-megaton nuclear warhead and possibly multiple MRVs, the JL-3 is believed to have a range of over 6,200 miles — putting the American West Coast in range of Chinese SLBM's for the first time.

By comparison, US Navy Ohio-class SSBNs are each armed with 20 Trident II SLBMs, which are believed to have a minimum range of 1,242 and a maximum range of 7,456 miles.

Six Type 094s have been constructed, with the first laid down in 2001. The two most recent subs are of the Type 094A upgraded subvariant. The class represents China's first credible sea-based nuclear deterrent , with the US Department of Defense reporting in 2022 that China "is conducting continuous at-sea deterrence patrols" for the first time.

Numbers, sophistication, and use

The growth of China's nuclear submarine fleet is impressive considering the timeline. According to the US Department of Defense, China has constructed 12 nuclear submarines in the last 15 years.

And the growth isn't just constrained to numbers — it also includes capabilities, with the newest Chinese nuclear submarines closing the gap with their American counterparts . The Type 093, for instance, is believed to be about as quiet as the US Navy's current Los Angeles-class SSNs.

China's fleet of diesel-electric powered submarines is also getting larger and more sophisticated , with recent upgrades aimed at increasing stealth and time underwater being implemented on their newest Type 039 class subs.

The growth in numbers and sophistication reflects the importance China believes submarines, particularly nuclear submarines, will have in potential future conflicts with its regional and global adversaries.

Chinese SSNs, with their ability to stay under water for long periods of time, could act as hunter-killers of American and allied ships and submarines in the waters east of Taiwan, possibly pushing them towards the Second Island Chain .

Chinese SSBNs, meanwhile, would likely operate from the safety of their bastions in the South China Sea, ready to launch their SLBMs whenever required. They could also operate in the Sea of Japan , putting even more of the continental US in range of their missiles.

All the while, they could be aided by their fleet of diesel-electric attack subs and the Underwater Great Wall , a network of sensors embedded on the floor of the East and South China seas aimed at detecting rival subs.

But China's nuclear subs still have limitations. The Type 094, for instance, is reportedly louder than the 1970s-era Russian Delta III-class SSBN and about twice as loud as its current American or Russian counterparts.

China's nuclear submarine ambitions remain undiminished. A new class of SSBN, the Type 096 , has been in development for years and is expected to be operational by 2030 . A new SSN, the Type 095 , is also planned as well.
