A welcome from the IOM ICA Executive Committee

It is my honour as one of the youngest IOMICA Executive members to address you on behalf of our newly elected Executive Committee. Like you, my passion and commitment for this brilliant global class have only strengthened with my growing participation. It is fitting having this address come from one of our youngest members, as more than 50% of our electorate is new to the Executive Board. So, to initiate this address, I would simply like to start by pausing to thank each and every one of you. Thank you for your support and participation in a radio sailing class that has origins dating back to 1958. What an accomplishment! This lengthy tradition  has produced some amazing sailboat designs and memorable events year after year. The shared passion for IOM has generated a  global camaraderie  that unites us all. Recognizing this, we would like to acknowledge some remarkable individuals for their stalwart commitment and personal sacrifice in promoting our IOM Class and the infrastructure behind it.

We must congratulate Mr. Fred Rocha for his eight years of service as the IOM ICA Chairman and acknowledge everything he accomplished. His perpetual enthusiasm   and  inclusivity  are traits that have greatly benefitted our class. He aspired to improve both our internal and external communication, promote the development of our class in new territories, and openly embrace new concepts and ideas. Fred was very generous with his time and support of all our organizational requirements, and worked tirelessly in this pursuit. Congratulations also need to be extended to our newly elected IOM ICA Chairman, Mr. Olivier Cohen. Additional changes in the Executive resulted in the position VC – Technical is going from Mr. Jeff Byerley to Mr. Robert Grubiša, VC – InfoComms passes from Mr. Pedro Egea to Josip Marasović, and the position of Treasurer formally transferring from Mr. David Turton to Mr. Sean Wallis. Pedro Egea deserves special recognition, as he’s tirelessly served our group with IT and “common sense” support for now eleven years — you are a genuine rockstar!! VC Measurement position is vacant, but we wanted also to congratulate Mr. Lawrie Neish, a true veteran who was helping us for around 11 years!! Gentlemen, you all deserve our heartfelt thanks for your service, and be assured we will raise a glass on your behalf.

As COVID continues to be a present challenge for all of us, I’d like to conclude this greeting with a note of  enthusiasm .  Always remember why the IOM Class is held in such high esteem in so many different countries,  surviving the test of time!  No matter how technologically advanced and exceptional IOM sailboats become in future, we will always rely on an overwhelming and continued desire to explore all facets and possibilities to improve performance and everyone’s experience in the end.  We need to continue to push our limits in all sectors of this class, and convey that information in an  open  and  democratic  fashion. This voice needs to be expressed beyond just our annual vote, but vocalized at every race, regatta, start, and buoy rounding, and literally every metre moving forward. Whether you are sailing at a top international regatta or having a twilight club race with friends, you are all part of this active global  IOM family . We are all facing challenges and uncertainty in our daily lives, but we do not have to question our passion and commitment to IOM. Through your individual activities and support, each of you is responsible for helping make this class what it is now and will ultimately become. Our growth and transformation evolve only when you  participate ,  experiment , and continue to  explore , so your engagement is crucial to our success in the future. We look forward to seeing you at future regattas, active in our forums and chats, social media and in photos. The year 2021 is at the very end, but we are just getting started, so let us all continue our story  together .

– Josip Marasović, new VC InfoComms

FAQs About RC Sailboats

If you do not see your question, or an answer to it, listed below, get in touch with us and we’ll happily give you one!

How do RC Sailboats work?

RC Sailboats work through radio control, which is a given considering the “RC” in the name, and a bit of skill. You need to steer, draw the sail, etc. Interestingly enough, it’s a lot like sailing a real sailboat, but you’re using a controller to do it.

This is where the skill part comes in. Drawing the sails, for example, requires timing and precision to ensure that you’re doing it properly. If you don’t, you face it sinking, should the model be a very extensive one, or not sailing properly at all.

the-best-rc-sailboat

Where can I race a RC Sailboat?

You can race a RC Sailboat virtually anywhere. Although, racing in the ocean may not be the best idea if you’re very invested, both emotionally and financially, in your boat.

This is where lines come in. A lot of users will have a line system to ensure that if there is a crash and their boat sinks, or whatever the case may be, they can still retrieve their vessel without actually having to go into the water.

Are there are RC Sailboats that use wind?

Yes! Some RC Sailboats do not use electricity or a motor as a source to run. Some only work with windy weather, but still require a controller for steering, drawing the sails, etc.

What happens when the wind stops?

This is another instance where a tow line comes in handy. If the wind stops you have two options – wait for it to come back, or use your tow line to reel it back in. Some users have small tugboats that are able to go out and retrieve a RC Sailboat that has a downed sail, has stalled, etc.

What if it tips?

If your RC Sailboats tips, it’s obviously not a very good one. The good quality ones have something at the bottom to ensure this doesn’t happen unless it’s hit by another one, has a hole in the side, etc.

It may tip into the water from the wind or have the bow go under water, but it should not tip on its side completely in any instance other than one of the reasons previously mentioned.

If it does tip, reel it in using your tow line or go into the water and get it.

I would definitely go for K2 – manufactured by Sailboat RC company. That 1-metre hull beast won World AND European Championship, USA Nationals, Southern America Cup, Australian Nats…and all in 2017/2018 season!!

Check it out, it is outstanding piece of art really, a must have RC Sailboat.

I am looking for 1 mtr fibreglass remote controlled sailing boat preferably European or american. Thanks Annette

' src=

Hej! Have you found something? I search for a rc sailboat that I can transport with my bicicle.

' src=

Hi Annette, I too am looking for a 1 meter or 3 foot sailboat. Had a “Tradewinds” that was 3 feet long and loved it! BUT, the 5 pound center board weight (I used BB’s) was hard to find…. Want to get one so it can be sailed in the pond/small lake outside. A friend got one too and we used to “race”. But, we had no buoys – there are usually two or three and depends on the size of the boat.

In the Chicago area, Wisconsin, Chicago, Indiana (Munster), Michigan, and Florida (about 20 miles from Orlando) – we were lucky and I was sailing anywhere from 13′ to 45′ boats. People that did not know me were freaked out when I could sail.

Another boat makes sense here. And, if I had two, then another person can sail too. And, I can make buoys that are needed to race boats. Hmm, that is a good idea.

I am a former professional licensed Captain, sailboat dealer and racer who is now landlocked. Looking to start RC sailing, but prefer to identify key class associations, publications and such information to make sure there is a strong RC class or one design to guide me. Looking forward to guidance first, then back on the water the right way.

My 18-year-old sails 420s and Lasers competitively, and is now asking for a r/c sailboat for Christmas. He has never used one before, but thinks the idea sounds fun. He is engineer-minded, grew up rigging and racing. We live on a bay off the ocean. Can anyone recommend a r/c sailboat $300 or less?

I am sourcing an RC catamaran (3’+-) and would like suggestions. Thx.

RC Sailboat Buyer’s Guide

Whether you’re after some peaceful weekend sailing at your local pond, or you plan on blowing the competition out of the water at RC races, a great RC sailboat is a must have.

We know there’s lots of options out there – but don’t worry, we’re here to help you find the best RC sailboat for you!

There’s a range on the market, from the fast and furious like Volantexrc RC Sailboat to models just perfect for a Sunday morning cruise. Here’s what to look out for.

While RC sailboats are speedy, they certainly aren’t the fastest boats on the water, and many hobbyists who want a zoom around the lake opt for a catamaran or race boat. That’s not to say sailboats aren’t speedy – with those designed for racing reaching up to 30mph. However, most sailboats are perfect for a tranquil day on the water, just like their full scale counterparts!

If you’ve got a need for speed, get a sailboat like DragonForce 65 RC Sailboat which is specifically designed for competitions with a lightweight design.

RC sailboats will come with a steering servo, most likely already installed. The rudder is used for steering which can make them slightly less smooth to steer than other RC models, but they should still be very easy to control.

Design and Detail

A DIY RC sailboat allows you to be a little more creative when it comes to the detail, and many hobbyists choose to put their own stamp on their boat with unique colors and patterns. Small but intricate details will give your sailboat a more realistic look and help it stand out from the rest at competitions.

A long, sleek design will allow the boat to go faster across the water, while bigger and heavier models are perfect for slower speeds. If you’re serious about RC sailboats, most can be upgraded with new parts to get them race-ready.

Sailing the high seas with your RC sailboat is a great way to spend an afternoon, or an entire day, and our top 3 RC sailboats will guarantee you hours of fun. For the easy to follow instructions, smooth and sleek design, and the high quality parts, the DragonFlite 95 RC Sailboat claims the top spot for best RC sailboat.

Achieve Your Potential in Competition IOM Sailing

Vickers RC Sailing

75472874_10157751310012277_7807677101569

Producer of the V11 Competition International One Metre Design by Ian Vickers.

Our workshop opened in 2014 with the V8 IOM. Since then we have produced hundreds of hand crafted IOM yachts in the Vickers design range. Yachts that have helped IOM competitors around the world achieve their potential and exceed expectations in competition.

We are currently offering the V11, the innovative design that finished 3rd at the 2019 World Championships in Port Alegre, Brazil.

When our clients return, they know they are tapping in to smart, competitive technology in IOM design and build. Stiff, Lightweight boats, that are Easily Assembled, Fast and Forgiving to sail. Join the fun!

Improve your results at the club and the regatta, with the fast and forgiving V11 from Vickers RC Sailing

Set Up and Sail

The V11 detailing is simple but effective. In conjunction with the V11 Set Up Guide, assembly is straight forward, and vital tuning information assists you to quickly understand and master your V11's potential

IMG_6609.jpg

Vickers RC Sailing build processes are well refined and thought out.

Our boats are light, stiff and clever,  keeping to a simple and effective philosophy around detailing

The V11 design is a hull, foils and bulb package to compliment the full range of conditions experienced in RC Sailing. The hull design has full volume forward and features the familiar chines and tumblehome of the modern IOM for reduced weight and windage, as well as good tracking characteristics. The V11 features our peaked style foredeck for efficient water shedding when buried downwind and a geometrically strong shape for the forestay and mast ram areas.

Foils are slippery and strategically positioned with the rig to balance the yacht. The V11s forgiving balance through the wind range, allows the skipper to focus on the race at hand, and not rely on micro steering to maintain a consistent VMG.

The rig sits solid on its deck stepped mast step, complimented at deck level with an encapsulating mast gate arrangement over the mast ram. The rudder tube is rigidly supported inside the moulded servo tray.

Hull construction is from E-Glass Fibreglass Cloth and High Grade Epoxy Resin.

The foils are Carbon Fibre Layup with High Grade Epoxy Resin.

Paint system is a 2 pot Urethane and the boat is thoroughly post cured before finishing.

The V11 Features-

Plastic main hatch access.

Ready to accept RMG Winch and Standard sized Rudder Servo

Bow Bumper attached.

Hardware is Bantock including an adjustable mast ram, adjustable mainsheet post and tiller arm.

All necessary fittings attached for standing and running rigging.

The V11 comes out of our workshop in Beach Haven, Auckland New Zealand and is ready to accept rigs and electrics.

We also make sails that can be added to the order, or ordered separately.

So hit the enquiry button to discuss delivery times and options.

We are ready to help.

IMG_6638.jpg

Essential to success in sailing comes down to the  Rig and how it is set up and tuned. The V11 comes with a Set Up Guide that covers all the expert information needed to set up like the guns. It specifies the hardware, construction and tuning information to get your rig and sails set up and sailing near optimum straight off the bat, so you can enjoy your racing and punch above your weight.

Include Sets of sails from Vickers RC Sailing and enhance the experience.

IMG_6611.jpg

Vickers Rc Sailing is back taking orders again for the V11

We look forward to hearing from you

Buying Guide Questions

Below are answers to some of the questions that usually come up as regards RC sailboats. It will help you make more informed decisions concerning RC sailboats as well as know where you can take the fun to among other stuff.

What size servo for one meter RC sailboat?

The prominent servo that is present in RC sailboats is the sail servo and there are two styles of sail servos, and you will likely find one of them in 1-meter RC sailboats. They are the sail winch servo and the sail arm servo.

Related: Wondering what the difference is with RC Hovercrafts? Then check out our guide on that topic.

The sail winch servo has a drum like wheel that houses the sail line. The rotation of the drum controls the length of the sail line that is being released or brought in. The main advantage of this sail servo is its small space requirement compared to the other sail servo. It can bring in the total sail line length in roughly three revolutions. However, its reaction time can be slow at times.

The sail arm servo utilizes a long arm to draw the sail line or release it. Its response time is quicker compared to the sail winch servo. It can be used alongside standard servo.

What causes RC sailboat to tip?

Various factors can cause an RC sailboat to tip. Top among these factors is weather conditions . An RC sailboat can tip if it encounters a harsh wind along with heavy rainfall.

Other factors can be mechanical failures, which usually occur as a result of some parts of the RC sailboat failing, or get damaged. If the sailboat collides with another sailboat or obstacle, it may also cause it to tip, this would of course not happen with RC Submarines or RC underwater drones , but those are typically more costly.

What is the length of a certified racing RC sailboat?

Various racing RC sailboats come with different lengths. However, to enter some competitions they have to meet the certified length requirement of the regulating body. World Sailing is the body that governs sailing as a sport around the world and they have a standardized length for sailboats of different classes.

For racing RC sailboats, the certified length is 1,000 mm (1 meter). This is also regarded as the hull length of the boat.

How do I get a permit to sail RC sailboat in central park?

Sailing your boat in central park is a fun activity, and people have been doing this for over a hundred years. So, it is normal that residents, as well as visitors, would want to partake in this activity.

You can get permits to store your sailboat in central park that is in charge of the park. There have rules and regulations that govern sailing in the park. There is a limit to the size of the sailboat you can bring to the park, and there is a designated period in the year when you can store your sailboats and sail.

Insider Tip: if you want to create some cool footage of you controlling your RC sailboat, then these RC Selfie Drones will work perfectly

How to paint an RC sailboat?

It is usually fun to see RC sailboats with impressive patterns and colors different from their original manufacturer design. Most of these sailboats are products of extra work put in by the owners to identify their boats as well as give it an appealing aesthetic view of their choice. There is no harm in wanting to add some spice to your RC sailboat, however, it is important to know how to go about it.

There are various ways people take to paint their sailboats, however, learning people who already have experience in painting sailboats because this will save you a lot of stress, and ensure that you have for yourself a lasting design.

The first thing to do is to draw the pattern of whatever design you want on your boat, then tape areas that need taping using a masking tape that pulls off cleanly after paint without distorting the paint lines. Cover the areas that you don’t want the paint to touch, then apply the spray paint on the boat. Ensure that the paint is well dried before removing the tape.

How do RC sailboats work?

The traditional sailboat does not work like the conventional boat, and this is the same for RC sailboats. That is why is essential to understand how they work before setting out to sail.

Unlike the conventional sailboat, all you have to do to control this sailboat is to use the radio control system where is a feedback mechanism between the transmitter and the receiver. There are two major components of the sailboat that are responsible for steering and moving the sailboat forward; these respective components are the rudder and sail trim.

RC sailboats utilize wind energy to move the boat on water. It does this by redirecting the wind or capturing a sizable amount of wind, enough to propel it forward. To accomplish this, the sailor has to ensure that the sail trim is adjusted properly in the direction that allows it to capture enough wind and move forward. The sail servo controls the degree to which a sail will swing using lines that are attached to the sail. The shorter the line, the fewer the degrees the sail is allowed to sway, and vice versa.

The rudder on the other hand is used to steer the sailboat in different directions. There is a servo that actuates the rudder of the sailboat to accomplish this after the radio system of the sailboat has received an input signal from the controller.

Understanding how a normal sailboat works may be the key to you having a long-lasting time with your RC sailboat. Also, it is essential to always go for products with good quality to prevent avoidable disappointments.

Insider Tip: be careful of the damage that saltwater can cause to RC boats of all kinds if you are not paying attention

Miniboat launched by SEA Class C-294 lands in Norway

  • Research@Sea

rc sailboat class

RYE, NH. A 5.5 foot long uncrewed sailboat (miniboat) built in 2020 by students at Rye Junior High in New Hampshire, was recovered in Smøla, near Dyrnes, Norway on February 1, 2022. After 462 days and 13,412 km of traveling across the Atlantic Ocean, the deck and cargo hold were the only remaining pieces of the boat, but the messages inside have sparked a new friendship between schools.

Educational Passages, a nonprofit organization based in Maine, whose mission is to connect students around the world to the ocean and each other, has been working with Rye Junior High School ( rjh.sau50.org ) since 2018 on this project. The boat, which arrived as a kit ( educationalpassages.org/start ), was built by the students in Ms. Sheila Adams’ science class as a way to learn about ocean currents, science, and math. “This project tapped into so much more than the science curriculum,” Ms. Adams said, and continued, “The students needed to use their writing skills to inform others about their miniboat project, describe our school and town to people of other languages, just in case, and write requests to get the boat deployed. The students were getting excited seeing it all come together and were about to decorate the boat when COVID sent the students home for the rest of the school year, but they continued to collaborate and see the project through.”

While students were learning virtually in May 2020, Ms. Adams worked with the director of Educational Passages, Ms. Cassie Stymiest, to decorate the boat in a safe and inclusive way. Ms. Adams asked all the students to submit a piece of artwork for the deck of the boat. Each student sent in a piece of artwork that was scanned, printed out, and adhered as a collage on the deck. The boat was ready to sail before the school year ended. “Over the summer, we worked together to try and find a deployer for the vessel that could take the boat out to sea beyond the Gulf of Maine, but found it challenging with all of the restrictions in place,” Ms. Stymiest said. “So we waited until fall and introduced the new 5th grade class to the project virtually. Since they hadn’t built the boat, we found ways to connect them by asking them what color to paint the bottom, and what messages to add to the cargo hold. We also talked about ocean currents and where the boat might travel. I felt connected to the project as well because the students were so welcoming, and I was glad to connect them with SEA Semester to launch their adventure into the ocean,” Ms Stymiest also said.

The Sea Education Association (SEA) in Woods Hole, Massachusetts volunteered to launch the boat alongside another miniboat called Sojourner’s Truth from JFK Middle School in Northampton, Massachusetts. They took the miniboats aboard the SSV Corwith Cramer , which launched the boats on October 25, 2020 as part of the C-294 cruise, “Atlantic Odyssey and Ocean Exploration.”

Captain Sean Bercaw and Chief Scientist Dr. Jeffrey Schell facilitated conversations between the crew and the students over email during the six-week voyage to Florida.

Dr. Schell, after hearing the news about the recovery in Norway, said, “My students really appreciated sending messages back to students onshore and building a connection. Any human connection after all the COVID isolation of the previous year was welcome! I remember October 25th well, we sailed across the Gulf Stream tracking the current magnitude as we went. Once we found the fastest part we sailed back to the chosen spot for launch (about 4 knots of current pointing due east) and gathered everyone to the quarterdeck for the big event. When Rye Riptides and Sojourner’s Truth hit the water there was a raucous cheer from the crew as both mini-boats caught the wind immediately and certainly appeared to be sailing faster than we were onboard the Corwith Cramer .”

After 10 months at sea, the GPS (Global Positioning System) on the Rye Riptides miniboat began reporting intermittently during hurricane season and then not again until September 30, 2021. On January 30, 2022, however, it reported once more from a small uninhabited island in Smøla, near Dyrnes, Norway. Thanks to connections made on social media, the boat was recovered by the Nuncic family who lived nearby.

The boat had been dismasted, and the hull and keel were no longer attached. The majority of the deck, with the cargo hold embedded, was intact and sealed. After cleaning off barnacles that had grown on the boat during its voyage, the family brought the boat home. Karel, who is also in grade 6, brought the boat to his school, Smøla barneskole, the next day. There the students opened the cargo hatch and found the messages and trinkets that the students in the US had added nearly two years before. The moment was captured and shared on the national news in Norway.

“What I find so special about Educational Passages is that it combines education with the mystery of a message in a bottle and the hope of making a human connection across the sea,” said Dr. Schell after hearing the news of the miniboat’s recovery in Norway. He continued, “It is a powerful and effective model and certainly grabbed the attention of my students. Even when our voyage ended in Key West the crew all stayed in touch and periodically shared news of the whereabouts of ‘our boats’. The connection had been made and we now cared about the fate of these mini-boats. So, it really is such great news to learn that Rye Riptides has safely returned to shore, though a bit battered, but its mission an undeniable success.”

Educational Passages and Rye Jr High School are now planning video connections with the school in Norway, and plan to continue building this new relationship to learn from each other and about the shared Atlantic Ocean between them. To read the full story and see what happens next, visit educationalpassages.org/boats/rye-riptides/ and follow other miniboats at sea from educationalpassages.org/events/atsea/ .

About Educational Passages

Educational Passages is a 501c3 non-profit organization whose mission is to connect students around the world to the ocean and each other. Teachers purchase kits with boat parts and supplies, and students build them, fill them with messages and trinkets, install the provided GPS, and send them out to sea to ride the ocean currents and wind. Students follow the track on the miniboat’s very own webpage, and teachers integrate ocean currents, geography, and other topics into their curriculum to connect the miniboat mission. When the boats land, the sticker on them says to bring the boat to a nearby school and connect classrooms. Since 2008, Educational Passages has worked with teachers and students around the world to launch 161 miniboats and reaching at least 29 countries to date.
