Best Outboard Motors

Learn more about some of the best outboards and outboard brands

Outboard motors dominate today’s boating market. And with good reason. Today’s outboards are powerful, quiet, reliable, easy to service, and offer excellent power-to-weight ratios, as well as outstanding corrosion resistance. American boaters can choose from more than 180 models (not counting shaft length variants), all four strokes, from manufacturers such as Honda Marine, Mercury Marine, Suzuki Marine, Yamaha Outboards, and others, many in a choice of colors.

Horsepower ratings range from 2.3 to a whopping 600 ponies. Advanced technology abounds, with many models featuring electronic throttle and shift, electric steering, digital integration with your marine electronics , wireless connections to apps that let you view key functions, and more. While many boaters might narrow their search to the best outboard motor for the money, we instead built this list to showcase the best outboards available.

If you own an outboard motor, then you probably already know what you like in terms of brand and horsepower. But, on the other hand, you might be interested to learn about other great outboard motors, in case you buy a second boat or want to repower with the latest outboard technology. With this in mind, we looked at three outboard categories—portables, midsize and big outboards—and highlighted models from the major outboard brands that reflect some of the most notable and innovative engineering and features in each class.

Choosing an outboard motor for your boat is an important decision. Here, then, are 15 of today’s best outboard motors, ordered by horsepower from low to high, defaulting to alphabetical order for like power ratings.

Portable Outboard Motors

The Honda Marine BF5 is easily portable

Honda Marine BF5

Portability, performance and reliability are the hallmarks of the Honda Marine BF5 tiller-steer outboard model, a motor that’s ideal for small boats and dinghies. The BF5 is equipped with a 0.4-gallon internal fuel tank, the largest in its class. This single cylinder outboard is also easy to pull-start, thanks to a decompression system that bleeds off cylinder pressure to reduce the pulling force. Weighing about 60 pounds, the BF5 is equipped with a 127cc overhead-cam engine that features an Oil Alert system that indicates any drop in oil pressure, automatically limiting the engine speed to 2,300 rpm. The Honda BF5 is available with an optional charging system with a capacity of 6 amps at 12 volts to power electronic devices on board.

The Suzuki Marine DF9.9B is packed with features

Suzuki Marine DF9.9B

This portable outboard is the only motor in its class with electronic fuel injection for easy starting, strong acceleration and smooth operation at all engine speeds. Even more impressive is that Suzuki DF9.9B’s EFI system does not require a battery. The two-cylinder 327cc overhead-cam engine also features Suzuki’s proven Lean Burn Control System for outstanding fuel efficiency from low idle speeds well up into the cruising range. Weighing 108 pounds (20-inch model), this motor is available with electric or manual start with a decompression system for easy pull-starts. Suzuki’s class-leading 327cc displacement delivers plenty of torque for pushing inflatables, small fishing boats and more. Power tilt and trim is optional.

Yamaha’s patented dual-thrust propeller offers robust forward and reverse thrust. Shallow Water Drive System or Power Tilt allows the operator to raise the outboard during low-speed operation or fully tilt the outboard up. A freshwater flushing device at the front of the outboard allows for easy maintenance and increased longevity. Resting pads enhance storage capability.

Weighing 359 pound (20-inch model), it comes with a multi-function display and an optional tiller handle that includes a larger shift lever, a power trim and tilt switch, handle height adjustment and trolling-speed control. The patented Blast system advances ignition timing during hard acceleration for powerful hole shots, while a Lean Burn Control system adjusts the air/fuel mixture to maximize fuel efficiency at cruise. A three-way cooling system promotes long-term durability. Honda’s Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) improves torque and power at higher rpm.

Fast and precise Digital Electric Steering (DES) draws battery amperage only when active. The 4.2-liter EFI V-6 incorporates Thrust Enhancing Reverse Exhaust (TERE) that allows the propeller to bite clean water for strong reverse thrust. Yamaha’s TotalTilt function allows complete tilt up from any position with a double push of the “UP” button, or full tilt down with a double push of the “down” button. It also improves top-end speed and enhances low-speed maneuvering. Weighing 727 pounds (25-inch model), this 4.4-liter V-6 features dual fuel injectors for better power output and fuel efficiency, a self-adjusting oil-bathed timing chain with Variable Valve Timing for performance and durability, a dual-louver direct air intake to provide cooler, denser air for more powerful combustion, and Suzuki’s Lean Burn Control technology for optimum efficiency. The drive-by-wire Suzuki Precision Control system delivers silky smooth shifting and instant throttle response, along with a wide range of advanced features for anglers and boaters.

Yamaha Outboards XTO Offshore is packed full of amazing features

Yamaha Outboards XTO Offshore

The 425 hp XTO Offshore 5.6-liter V-8 outboard motor combines power, reliability, system integration, control and convenience. The first four-stroke outboard to use direct fuel injection, the XTO Offshore sprays fuel at high pressure directly into the combustion chamber, rather than the intake track, improving atomization and increasing fuel burn effectiveness to maximize power and efficiency. Weighing 952 pounds (25-inch model), this outboard motor also features integrated electric steering, eliminating hydraulic lines, fluid and linkages. It allows for clean rigging and an orderly bilge. The XTO provides up to 96 amps (net) at idle and reaches peak output around 1,500 rpm. It is compatible with Yamaha’s Helm Master joystick control system.

Mercury Racing's 450R is built for performance

Mercury Racing 450R

Weighing 689 pounds, it is 300 pounds lighter than the nearest competitor. The exclusive Mercury Racing Advanced Mid Section (AMS) features heavy-duty stainless-steel guide plates and stiffened engine mounts that stabilize the outboard and enhance high-speed handling. An optional rear tie-bar bracket integral to the AMS provides a strong, ultra-light mounting point and uncluttered installation for catamaran and other high-speed applications. The 450R outboard is backed by a three-year limited factory warranty and a three-year limited corrosion warranty, the same as Mercury mainline outboards.

The Mercury V12 Verado is a revolutionary outboard

Mercury Marine V12 Verado

The new V12 Verado is in a class of its own, providing the ultimate boating experience for customers. Incorporating industry-first innovations, the 600 hp Verado includes a two-speed transmission, steerable gearcase, and 7.6-liter V-12 powerhead that differentiate it from any other outboard motor. Weighing 1,260 pounds, the V12 is Mercury’s quietest high horsepower engine ever built. Contra-rotating propellers maximize thrust and ease low-speed maneuvering. Maintenance has also been simplified—service intervals have been extended and all regular maintenance points are accessible via the top cowl service hood, meaning the top cowl does not need to be removed for 1,000 hours or five years. It is not an exaggeration to say that the Mercury V12 Verado establishes a new benchmark for marine propulsion.

Take a look in the pre-owned market, and you’ll find that a 24-footer that’s in good condition at around a $60,000 price point. An 18-footer could retail in pre-owned condition for as much as $25,000. That’s almost the same retail price as a new model.

The thousands of different models, finishes, and styles from dozens of different boat manufacturers can make finding the perfect one like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack. Whether you’re on the hunt for a weekend cruiser, a sporty motorboat, a nifty RIB, or a sturdy fishing boat, a wide range of different small boat manufacturers will pop up on your radar.

Creating a best-of list of manufacturers comes with its limitations, and it’s important to remember that there are many smaller and more bespoke brands out there that might just make the perfect boat for you. That said, we can take a look (in no particular order) at some top manufacturers of smaller sized motorboats which fit within the categories of fishing boats , wakeboard boats, bowriders , and more, to come up with some top picks.

No list is complete without Sea Ray, which is undoubtedly one of the best-known and best-loved small boat manufacturers of sport boats, deck boats, and bowriders in the world. With 27 models in today’s impressive repertoire and a legion of happy and loyal customers, Sea Ray is one of the biggest players in this category of boat. Their current models range from the 19 foot SPX 190 to the 40 foot SLX 400, some older models stretched to over 60 feet, and both new and used Sea Ray boats feature highly on Rightboat.com. Boat Insurance

Purchasing a boat is a big decision that takes time, patience, and research. Before making your final boat selection, you want to ensure the vessel not only has all of the features you desire at a great price but that your watercraft is adequately manufactured by the best boat companies in the industry. The passionate experts here at the National Boat Owners Association have put together a small guide to lead you to the most reliable boat brands and the best boat manufacturers in the USA. From high-end boat brands, yachts, and recreational watercrafts to motorboats, fishing boats, and sports boats, we are confident your needs will be met.

Powerboats & Motorboats

The best powerboat brands and motorboat brands are created by boat makers Formula Boats and Donzi Boats. Both boat companies are renowned manufacturers with a proven history of putting strong, light, and efficient boats on the water. Formula Boats are incredibly dedicated to bringing together family and friends on the water with watercrafts that are not only thrilling but safe. Donzi Boats are manufactured with over 55 years of experience, custom-made hardware, and flawless molds.

Sport Boats

Since there are a wide variety of sport boats with various features, we like to recommend a few high-quality sport boat manufacturers. Fountain Powerboats manufactures sports boats, cruisers, and fishing boats, among others. For inboard wakeboarding, water skiing, and other towing sports that provide luxury performance, you cannot go wrong with MasterCraft Boat Company . Keep a lookout for their specific sport boat brands like SaltWater boats, ProStar, MariStar, and X-Series. Last but not least is Sea Ray . This boat manufacturer has been honored with the NMMA Award for “highest satisfaction.”

Fishing Boat

Whether you are in the market for a freshwater fishing boat, saltwater fishing boat, sportfishing boat, or a high-end fishing boat, these manufactures put out some of the most reputable brands of fishing boats. Ranger Boats , Mako Boats , Contender Boats , Grady White , Bayliner , and Boston Whaler, are among the most highly respected boat makers in the industry. When comparing the best boat brands and manufacturers, there are several things to keep in mind, such as the placement and quantity of fishing rod holders and built-in tackle boxes, the size of baitwells, live wells, fish boxes, and the presence of desired fishing gear like outriggers, downriggers, downrigger ball holders, and electric reel plugs.

top motorboat brands

Motor yacht, sports yacht, and fishing yacht manufacturers can significantly vary from one to another. Once you have decided which type of vessel suits your needs and desires best, you need to set the bar in terms of comfort, aesthetics, style, and performance. Among the best yacht manufacturers are Hatteras Yachts , specializing in sportfishing and motor yachts, Silverton Marine Corporation , filling the waters with a variety of luxury yachts, and Viking Yachts , the best manufacturer for convertible, open, and sports yachts.

10 Best Outboard Motor Brands Compared [Video]

Based on our research, the 10 best outboard motor brands in the marketplace are as follows:

If you want to find out more about these companies and their products, you’ve come to the right place.

We at PowerSportsGuide have compiled all you need to know under one roof!

10 Best Outboard Brands Compared

1. mercury outboards.

Many boaters agree that Mercury Marine is one of the best outboard motor manufacturers, and with good reason.

The Massachusetts-based company offers high-quality motors with an engine power of 2.5-600 HP. What’s more, this brand has by far the largest fleet of outboards designed for many different purposes.

In a nutshell, the key categories of Mercury outboards are as follows:

  • FourStroke (Standard 4-stroke motors)
  • Pro XS (Professional-level performance)
  • Verado (Supercharged)
  • SeaPro (Heavy-duty components)
  • Jet (25-80 HP)

These popular products are commonly used by business owners, governments, and countless individual buyers in and outside the US.

Another key advantage of this manufacturer is an extensive dealer network that covers the entire US.

It’s a fun fact that Mercury entered the snowmobile market in the late ‘60s!

2. Yamaha Outboards

Besides Mercury, another big player in the outboard industry is Yamaha .

The Japanese company is well known for its powersport vehicles such as motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, snowmobiles, and WaveRunners.

Yamaha offers 4-stroke outboards with an engine power of 2.5-450 HP , including jet outboards with 40-150 HP engines.

What’s more, the manufacturer entered the electric boat motor market with a special propulsion system labeled Harmo.

Just like its main competitor, Yamaha’s dealer network literally covers the entire US and many other countries worldwide.

Thanks to this availability and their outstanding durability, Yamaha products stand out in the crowd.

3. Suzuki Outboards

Suzuki outboards are known for their reliability and affordable price tags.

The engine power of these motors ranges from 2.5 up to 350 HP, and two 350 models come standard with a dual-prop drive .

Generally, Suzuki outboard motors are noticeably cheaper than competitor models made by other members of the “Big Five” (Mercury, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Tohatsu).

4. Honda Outboards

Honda Marine markets outboard motors with 2.3-250 HP engines, including jet outboard motors from 40-105 HP.

The Japanese manufacturer produces prop-drive outboards with 2.3-250 HP power heads, as well as jet outboards with 40-105 HP engines.

Although the brand has many fans nationwide, it’s at a competitive disadvantage due to its small dealer network and narrow product range.

As an example, the most powerful Honda outboard produces 250 HP while competitor brands offer motors with 300-600 HP depending on the brand. (Most powerful models: Mercury – 600 HP, Yamaha – 450 HP, Suzuki – 350 HP.)

Because of these disadvantages, customers often turn to rival brands, especially Mercury and Yamaha.

5. Tohatsu Outboards

Although the Tohatsu Corporation is often referred to as one of the “Big Five” outboard manufacturers, it has a significantly smaller market share than its rivals.

The company offers prop-drive outboards ranging from 2.5 to 250 HP and jet outboards with 25-40 HP engines.

What’s more, the fleet includes a portable LPG outboard with a 5 HP power head.

6. OXE Outboards

OXE Marine is a Scandinavian outboard manufacturer that entered the market in 2014.

The company designs and produces diesel outboards with commercial users in mind.

Compared to standard outboards, OXE motors come with heavy-duty components and a diesel power head, which ensures outstanding durability and low running costs.

The latest model in the OXE lineup is the innovative OXE Hybrid 450, claimed to be the first diesel-electric hybrid outboard ever built.

Besides their hefty price tags, OXE outboards are known for their heavy weights and narrow dealer network.

7. COX Outboards

COX Marine is a smaller British startup established in 2007.

The company’s main goal is no less than to revolutionize the outboard motor market with the help of digitalization.

COX develops and manufactures efficient and durable diesel outboard engines. Powered by a 300 HP powerhead, the COX300 is the most powerful turbo-diesel outboard motor in the marketplace.

8. Torqeedo Outboards

Torqeedo is arguably the largest outboard motor manufacturer and has been on the market since 2005.

The German company offers electric outboards with 1-80 HP engines, electric inboard boat motors, pod drives, batteries, accessories, and more.

9. Minn Kota Outboards

Minn Kota produces a great line of electric trolling motors, producing about 1.5-2 HP.

These outboards are primarily designed for trolling, but they also do a good job of pushing tiny vessels.

The Minnesota-based company was established in 1934 and quickly became the biggest player in the trolling outboard marketplace.

10. MotorGuide Outboards

MotorGuide is another well-known electric outboard motor manufacturer, offering many great trolling motors for fresh and saltwater environments.

It’s good to know that the products of MotorGuide are exclusively manufactured in the US.

This company belongs to the Brunswick Corporation, which also owns many reputable boating brands, including Bayliner, Sea Ray, Boston Whaler, Mercury Marine, Lund, Lowe, and many more.

Conclusion – Which Outboard Brand is The Best?

Which outboard brand is the best? We get this question frequently and the answer is it depends.

If you are looking for a gas-powered outboard, the best brands are arguably Mercury and Yamaha.

These companies have the largest lineups and the widest deal networks. So, it is no surprise that these manufacturers dominate the outboard market in the US.

Suzuki, Honda, and Tohatsu are also known for their high-quality and reliable motors, but they have smaller product ranges and far fewer dealers in the states.

Compared to the “Big Five”, OXE and COX are relatively new players in the field. These boutique manufacturers offer innovative, fuel-efficient diesel outboards.

When it comes to electric outboard manufacturers, the most reputable companies are Torqeedo, Minn Kota, and MotorGuide.

The Best Outboard Motor Brands and Types for Your Boat

In the realm of outboard motor brands , one encounters a wide array of opinions and preferences when seeking the answer to the question, "Which is the best outboard motor brand ?" It's a topic that often sparks passionate debates among boating enthusiasts. Nevertheless, in today's era, the truth remains that choosing from the major outboard engine brands is a relatively safe bet. Unlike the ancient days when many outboards were notorious for being dirty, smelly, finicky, and unreliable, modern four-stroke engine technology has transformed the outboard motor landscape into a more enjoyable and dependable experience.

The question of the best outboard motor for your investment naturally arises. For most, the answer leans towards the four-stroke variety, but exceptions do exist. While many people tend to generalize outboard motor brands , there are instances where specific models, horsepower ranges, or platforms shine brighter than the rest.

The Best Types of Outboard Motors

The Best Types of Outboard Motors

At its core, an outboard engine refers to any boat motor that can be securely fastened to a boat's transom to provide propulsion. Most outboards have three key sections : the powerhead concealed beneath a cowl at the top. This midsection connects the motor to the boat. It houses a driveshaft leading to the lower unit and a lower section where gears transmit power from the shaft to the propeller. Nevertheless, as we shall soon explore, exceptions to this basic design exist .

Four-Stroke Gasoline Outboard Engines

Four-Stroke Gasoline Outboard Engines

In today's outboard engine landscape, most gasoline-fueled outboards are four-strokes, following the retirement of Evinrude, the last manufacturer dedicated to two-stroke gasoline outboard engines . These four-stroke engines come in various sizes, from the smallest single-cylinder 2.3- to 2.5-horsepower models to the massive V-12 600-horsepower behemoths.

The modern four-stroke reigns supreme for two compelling reasons: they provide a smooth and pleasurable running experience, while their reliability is nothing short of impressive. The noise and vibration levels have been considerably reduced compared to the historical two-stroke engines . Once it's shifted into gear, one might only notice a four-stroke engine is running. This heightened level of refinement enhances the overall boating experience. Moreover, the confidence that the engine will start reliably with the turn of a key is a far cry from the unreliable outboards of decades past. Many marine professionals concur that the answer to "What is the best outboard motor ever ?" often leads to a simple response - "a four-stroke."

Electric Outboard Engines

Electric Outboard Engines

Electric outboards have witnessed significant advancements in recent years. Not long ago, they occupied a lower rung on the hierarchy of outboard options , with limited availability and the onus on the buyer to find compatible batteries. Today, the landscape has transformed. Modern electric outboards range from less than one horsepower to an impressive 300 horsepower, with some manufacturers even planning to introduce 400-horsepower models shortly.

Electric outboard manufacturers now offer comprehensive power packages that include specialized batteries. Some configurations feature batteries that seamlessly attach to the motor's midsection, creating a profile remarkably similar to traditional gasoline outboards , albeit without noise, vibrations, or exhaust emissions. In other setups, sizable battery packs are integrated into the boat, providing a purpose-designed and hassle-free electric propulsion solution .

Diesel Outboard Engines

Diesel Outboard Engines

Diesel outboards are a niche within the outboard market , with only a handful of manufacturers offering models ranging from 150- to 300- horsepower . These large and heavy diesel outboards make them less suitable for most applications. However, their diesel fuel compatibility makes them an attractive choice for yacht tenders, where refueling from the yacht's onboard diesel supply eliminates the need to carry volatile gasoline . Military applications also find use for diesel outboards. Moreover, diesel engines often deliver superior fuel efficiency, making them appealing to certain commercial fleets and even replacing inboard engines in scenarios where traditional outboards were not viable.

Propane Outboard Engines

Propane Outboard Engines

Propane outboards experienced a surge in popularity roughly a decade ago. Still, enthusiasm waned due to issues with substandard components and reliability from the largest manufacturer at that time, which is now defunct . Nevertheless, improved models have persisted, and today, there are two 5-horsepower propane outboards on the market, produced by Mercury and Tohatsu. These outboards are favored for their quiet, emissions-free operation and the convenience of refueling with readily available propane canisters.

The Most Powerful Outboard Motor Brands

The Most Powerful Outboard Motor Brands

Mercury Marine is an undeniable leader in powerful outboard engines . Their 600-horsepower Verado, a V-12 marvel, surpasses all competitors by a significant margin, boasting 100 additional horsepower. This formidable engine, weighing 1,260 pounds and displacing a substantial 7.6 liters, offers brute power and groundbreaking features. It introduces a two-speed transmission that shifts imperceptibly and a steerable gearcase that enhances maneuverability . Twin contra-rotating propellers , integrated electro-hydraulic steering, and a convenient top hatch for maintenance access further cement its position at the pinnacle of outboard technology .

Following closely is another Mercury offering, the 500R from Mercury Racing . This potent engine builds upon Mercury's 4.6-liter V-8 platform by adding a supercharger, increasing supercharger boost, and enhancing components to handle greater stresses. Weighing a mere 720 pounds, it sets a new benchmark for power density.

Yamaha's F450 is the third heavyweight contender, having recently evolved from the F425 with improved exhaust and intake flow, cam, and valve optimizations. The F450 is the sole direct-injection four-stroke outboard , resulting in superior fuel atomization and combustion. Additionally, it incorporates a unique phased-angle-control charging system that produces a remarkable 96 amps at idle. This " stackable " output allows multiple engine setups to collectively provide substantial electrical power, potentially eliminating the need for an onboard generator to operate power-hungry appliances like gyroscopic stabilizers and air-conditioning systems.

The Best Small Outboard Motor Brands

The Best Small Outboard Motor Brands

With small outboard engines , the Suzuki Marine commands attention. With the introduction of the DF15A and DF20A models, Suzuki pioneered the world's first battery-less EFI outboards. EFI technology enhances fuel economy, simplifies starting with a single pull, and eliminates the carburetor and its associated ethanol-related issues. Suzuki expanded the battery-less EFI technology to their 9.9-horsepower model and beyond, gradually phasing out carburetors in favor of this innovative solution . Suzuki's small outboards also boast offset crankshafts, oil-bathed timing chains, and " troll mode " systems that enable precise RPM adjustments in 50 RPM increments. While many manufacturers prioritize larger powerplants, Suzuki distinguishes itself as a leader in small outboard motors .

The Best Electric Outboard Motor Brands

The Best Electric Outboard Motor Brands

The realm of electric outboard motors has seen a proliferation of startups, with numerous motors vying for recognition and market share. It remains challenging to definitively declare the best electric outboard motor . However, Torqeedo's extensive lineup of electric outboards has stood the test of time, proving its reliability over the long term. Torqeedo also offers integrated battery systems, including a powerful 79.2 kWh lithium iron phosphate unit rated for 4,000 cycles and backed by a 10-year capacity warranty. While newcomers may yet disrupt the status quo, Torqeedo maintains its reputation as a reliable choice for electric propulsion .

Evoy enters the scene with an entirely distinct class of electric motors boasting 120- and 300-horsepower ratings. Similarly, Vision Marine contributes to the electric revolution with a 180-horsepower powertrain fueled by a 70 kWh power bank. While time will reveal their real-world performance, it's noteworthy that major boat manufacturers are already partnering with these companies to incorporate electric propulsion into their models.

2024 Motor Boat Awards winners: Best motorboats of the year revealed

  • Motor Boat Awards
  • Top stories

It has taken months of testing, weeks of analysing and days of deliberating amongst our judges but the 2024 Motor Boat Awards winners can now be revealed....

As always we have chosen a winner in each of our nine boat categories based on how well it performed during our rigorous sea trials but also how well it meets the requirements of its target market in relation to its size, style and price.

In some categories we have also awarded a highly commended to boats which may not be as rounded as the winner but which have moved the game on in some significant way.

Last but not least we’d like to thank Sleipner for once again partnering with us as the headline sponsor of the 2024 Motor Boat Awards and our individual category award sponsors Garmin , CGI Finance and Lumishore .

2024 Motor Boat Awards winners revealed

Sportsboats up to 30ft.

Finalists: Cormate T28 ,  Rand Leisure 28 , Williams Evojet 70 , Saxdor 270 GTO

Winner – Saxdor 270 GTO

Buyers expect a lot of a sportsboat these days; building a decent hull that goes well and looks the part is no longer enough. Now it needs to be a jack of all trades with plenty of seating and sunbathing space, a wetbar to feed and water your guests, a table for dining, a T-Top to keep the sun off, a bed for overnighting and a heads for everyone’s comfort and convenience.

The Saxdor 270 GTO provides all these things and more. Thanks to a wide range of engine choices, including single or twin installations, and a vacuum-infused twin-step hull, buyers can fine tune the balance between performance and efficiency.

The options list is even more comprehensive, with prices starting from a very tempting £89,857 inc VAT. However you choose to specify it, the result will always be a very stylish craft that is small enough to tow on the road, large enough to spend the night on, fast enough to entertain the driver and capable enough to cover distance in a good degree of comfort and safety. The fact that it can do all this while undercutting many of its key rivals on price is the icing on the cake.

Highly commended – Cormate T28

Still one of the most exhilarating drivers’ boats around but now with an added dose of practicality to back up its timeless looks and classy detailing, the new T28 is a quality number that more than justifies its premium pricing.

Dayboats over 30ft

Finalists: Schaefer V33 , Flipper 900 DC , X-Power 33 , Jeanneau Cap Camarat 10.5CC

Winner – Flipper 900 DC

Even by Nordic standards, the Flipper 900 DC is a supremely accomplished weekender, and it achieves this by taking the best elements of the classical Scandinavian day cruiser and repackaging them in a fresh and dynamic package that brings this venerable genre bang up to date.

For starters, you get a really secure, deepset cockpit with a long elevated wraparound screen for outstanding protection from the elements. You also get nigh-on perfect helm ergonomics with everything you need to operate this boat singlehanded with tremendous confidence.

Storage is very well taken care of and, given the lovely Windy-esque lines of that raked foredeck, the sleeping facilities are pretty good too. They include a proper double berth forward and a more compact bed beneath the cockpit sole, plus a separate heads compartment to port.

But in spite of the sheer user-friendliness of the interior, it’s the looks and performance that are likely to live longest in the memory. If you’re a really keen driver, you can spec this boat with twin 300hp outboards for 50-knot performance. But even with the base 225s, you’ll find yourself flying past 30 knots in eight seconds and topping out at around 45 knots.

Adventure Boats

Finalists: Archipelago 47 , Ballistic XP80 , Sargo 45 , Quarken 27 Cabin , XO DFNDR 8

Winner – Sargo 45

As the largest boat ever to emerge from Sargo, the new 45 is covered in hardworking details. There’s the easy-access side-hinging engine hatch, the hidden fender baskets and the wide-diameter fuel fillers.

There’s the double-glazed pilothouse windows and the big internal dinette, which is slightly elevated to preserve your all-round views. And then there’s the sociable bow dinette with its table and bracket stowed in a rubber-lined locker directly next door.

These things all make the ownership experience that bit more pleasant but it’s the sheer ability of this platform as a year-round adventure companion that really makes the difference.

While a soft, dry ride and a wide range of flat, comfortable cruising speeds are ideal for long offshore passages, the two or three-cabin lower deck layout also enables you to tailor the boat specifically to your lifestyle. You can opt for IPS or sterndrives, as well as the dynamic-looking Explorer package. And the appeal of this mighty offshore pilothouse cruiser will only increase once the flybridge variant becomes available.

Highly commended – Quarken 27 Cabin

As the pilothouse version of the award-winning 27 T-Top, the latest Quarken does more with the space (and provides more for the money) than almost anything else out there.

Finalists: Frauscher Demon 1414 , SAY 42 , Windy 34 Alizé , Viggo C10 Offshore

Winner – Windy 34 Alizé

What purist fans want from Windy is very simple – a boat that can take them across rough seas at pace with agile handling and a smooth, soft ride, then accommodate them for a night or two when they reach their destination. The 34 Khamsin was such a boat until it was discontinued in 2013 but its long-awaited replacement, the Alize 34, is even better.

Sitting neatly between the 32 Grand Zonda and the 37 Shamal in terms of both size and price, the new 34 Alize is 2ft longer and 7in wider than the 32, and that’s crucial because it makes it the smallest boat in the fleet that can be specced with a pair of Volvo Penta D6 440s.

These are a wonderful match, combining fearsome acceleration and a 51-knot top speed with effortless all-day cruising at 40-knots. With its traditional step-free deep-vee hull, fine entry, aggressive spray rails and soft-riding 24°deadrise, this boat is hugely capable in a lumpy sea. The fact it also happens to offer a versatile day boating cockpit and comfortable overnighting for four people is a very happy bonus!

Highly commended – Viggo C10 Offshore

The most exciting boat we’ve driven all year, with searing 60-knot performance, superb sea-keeping and bullet-proof build quality, but a rather spartan, fit-for-purpose interior.

Sportscruisers up to 45ft

Finalists: Bavaria SR33 , Sealine S390 , Aquador 300 HT, Marex 440

Winner – Marex 440

If Espen Aalrud, the Marex boss, is serious about building the best family boats in the world, the new 440 is the perfect place to begin. While it might look quite modest in a classical Nordic kind of way, the ingenuity behind the deck layouts is deeply impressive.

The aft cockpit is secure and contained, with a generous arrangement of peripheral bench seating providing no fewer than six corner seats. It can be cordoned off from the elements with quick-rig canvases and it can also be used as a private double berth, thanks to all-round blinds and a pair of handy pilothouse side doors.

There are plenty of high-spec features, including an anchor camera and floating lilo-style foredeck cushions, but it’s the options list that enables this boat to excel. You can go for IPS drives, sterndrives or shafts, or two or three cabins. And you can also opt for the “Gourmet Cruiser” layout, with a massive aft galley operating as the day boating hub. Clever, flexible and painstakingly resolved, very few new boat recommendations are as clear-cut and unqualified as this.

Highly commended – Aquador 300 HT

This next-generation Aquador is another fine family cruiser. High-spec but keenly priced, it comes with a beach club stern seat, a big cockpit, slick styling and sleeping for up to six.

Sportscruisers over 45ft – sponsored by Lumishore

Finalists: De Antonio D50 Coupé , Sunseeker Superhawk 55 , Evo R+ , Azimut Verve 48

Winner – Sunseeker Superhawk 55

Reinventing the Superhawk name as a big, sporty cruiser with comfortable overnighting facilities rather than a pure performance craft was always going to be a tricky task, but the new 55 has won over all but the most die-hard Superhawk fans.

With its long foredeck, swept-back screen and discreet (optional) hard top it still looks the part, while a pair of Volvo IPS950 engines matched to a suitably dynamic hull form ensure it also performs and handles better than most of its more ponderous rivals. But it’s the space and facilities it offers guests both above and below decks that really impresses.

Not only is there a hidden tender garage for a William’s Minijet but you can fit a jet-ski on the bathing platform and a pair of Seabobs in the sunbed locker. Then there’s a vast full-beam cockpit with moveable corner seats, a comprehensive wetbar and a well protected helm position.

Unlike some sportscruisers, the lower deck is also a genuinely enjoyable place to spend time, with masses of natural light, a large saloon, a decent galley and two comfortable ensuite cabins.

Highly commended – Azimut Verve 48

With its amazing bow space, its big aft party deck and its triple 600hp outboards, this infectiously feel-good American-style plaything will put a huge smile on your face, wherever you happen to go boating.

Flybridges up to 60ft

Finalists: Rodman 1290 Evolution , Fairline Squadron 58 , Jeanneau 1295 Merry Fisher , Ferretti 580 , Sirena 48

Winner – Fairline Squadron 58

The stern arrangement on the Squadron 58 is a true game-changer. It features a cockpit with a glazed transom, modular furniture, twin drop-down terraces and a fold-out bar with a pair of stools that can be relocated to the port side.

Further aft, a “Slide & Hide” submersible bathing platform enables you to extend the deck at the push of a button. There’s also a transom galley back here, with an ice bucket and an optional slide-out barbecue. You can even spec the crew cabin as a day heads, which would enable this superyacht-style beach club to function as a self-contained social hub.

Things are equally enticing on the inside. The playful integration of angles transforms the ambience of the new 58, creating quietly diverting points of interest that its competitors simply don’t possess.

Highly commended – Jeanneau 1295 Merry Fisher

Good to look at, intelligently designed, full of space and brilliant to drive, the new 1295 Fly is a remarkably complete boat and a really rewarding way to spend £500,000.

Flybridges over 60ft

Finalists: Azimut Magellano 60 , Absolute Navetta 75 , Pearl 72 , Prestige M8 , Princess F65

Winner – Pearl 72

Bill Dixon and Kelly Hoppen have been a fearsome duo over the years – Bill for his stylish exterior designs and clever interior space management and Kelly for her ability to make slick high-end environments feel homely and welcoming rather than niche or esoteric.

The new 72 is arguably their best work yet. On the outside, stratified ranks of glass and swept spears of fibreglass make it look like one of the most striking and distinctive boats around; and on the inside, though it’s not overtly flamboyant, things feel even more charismatic.

From the aft terraces and the space-saving V-drives to the galley placement, the light management and the two fabulous owner’s cabins, this second smallest of the Pearl fleet has masses of personality and practicality.

Highly commended – Prestige M8

The M8 is a fine boat. Well built and beautifully styled with huge reserves of space, good sea manners and a deliciously indulgent deck layout, it stands a very good chance of converting us all to the merits of cats.

Custom Yachts

Finalists: Princess X80 , Ferretti 860 , Bering 76 , Sunseeker 100 Yacht , Wally WHY150

Winner – Princess X80

Love or loathe the confrontational styling of the X Class range, you just can’t ignore it. That lofty elevation, fulsome superstructure and “super flybridge” layout have proved so effective at luring in customers that they are now being widely mimicked in “crossover” craft all over the world.

But if the original X95 proved a little too challenging for some, the X80’s more moderate walkaround take on the concept not only looks sweeter to our eyes but also performs better and brings bigger benefits to this size of craft, enabling the option of main-deck owner’s suite on an 80ft platform.

It also costs little more than half as much as the X95, while matching many of its big sister’s key selling points: sleeping for up to ten people in five ensuite cabins? Check. A super-sized main deck with dedicated day heads? No problem. A flybridge with a sheltered sky lounge and helm position? All part of the package.

Highly commended – Sunseeker 100 Yacht

A class-leading upper deck that stretches from bow to stern and a sensational main deck owner’s cabin are just two of the highlights of this seriously spacious new motor yacht.

Customer Service Award – sponsored by CGI Finance

Finalists: Approved boats, boats.co.uk, Horizon Boat Sales, Norfolk Yacht Agency, TBS Boats

Winner – Norfolk Yacht Agency

top motorboat brands

This is the only award based on nominations from the public and this year’s tally of votes was the biggest yet. Hundreds of people emailed in their suggestions, with judges basing their final decision not just on the quantity of votes recieved but also the anecdotal evidence of the outstanding customer service provided to them. With a track record stretching back over 50 years and an equally long list of very happy customers, this year’s award goes to Norfolk Yacht Agency.

Norfolk’s leading brokerage company consistently put their customers needs first, helping them through the often stressful process of buying or selling a boat and ensuring they feel looked after every step of the way. Here are a few of the comments from customers:

“I have bought and sold a number of boats through NYA over the years. They have always achieved close to the valuation, getting a better sale price for us than we thought.”

“When I bought my first boat I was inexperienced and very concerned about investing a large sum of money in a boat. At no time did I feel pressurised and I was fully supported throughout the process. I can honestly say that my very happy boating experience is due to the team at NYA.”

“Here is a company you can trust to deliver what it promises. The service they provided was efficient and good value for money. The bonus is that they are lovely people to deal with too.”

Judges’ Special Award – sponsored by Garmin

Winner –  Jan-Erik Viitala

top motorboat brands

Never happier than when talking boats

Serial entrepreneur Jan-Erik Viitala has fitted more into his 16-year boat industry career than most people fit into a lifetime. As one of the founding partners, and subsequently CEO, of both Paragon Yachts and XO Boats, he helped build the foundations of a new breed of all-purpose adventure boat.

Using this knowledge and his own hard-earned experience of growing up around boats in Finland, he then threw himself into a fresh project building an entirely new brand called Axopar – famously, an acronym of the three companies A(quador), XO and PAR(agon).

The first model, a 28ft outboard-powered walkaround adventure boat, was launched on an unsuspecting world at the Helsinki Boat Show in February 2014. With its aggressively modern looks, sea-kindly hull, punchy outboard power, walkaround decks and highly competitive pricing, it’s fair to say it proved quite popular!

Over 200 examples were sold in the first 18 months – an unheard of number for a brand new start-up – but a mere drop in the ocean compared to the current total of almost 3,000 units. Now approaching its 10th anniversary, Axopar has gone on to become a true boating phenomenon.

Much copied but rarely matched, Axopar is the defining brand for a whole new generation of boats and boaters. And while Jan-Erik would be the first to acknowledge the input of the team around him, it is his vision and relentless drive to keep improving its craft that has fuelled its stratospheric growth.

Important Things to Keep in Mind about Engines When You Rent a Motorboat

If you decide to rent a motorboat , we are generally talking about the kinds of outboard motors or engines that come with these boats. Some of the major engine manufacturers are Mercury, Yamaha, Evinrude, and Suzuki, and we’ll look at some of their latest offerings when we talk about it below. Most motorboat motors offer generous warranties of up to six years, so they are generally very reliable. The biggest differences between all of the motors are in terms of horsepower and efficiency. Fuel range and economy are also concerns if you decide to rent a motorboat for a big group of people. Here are seven of the best outboard motors that you should consider when renting a motorboat, especially if you want to purchase a motorboat in the near future.

Mercury Motors

mercury motors

The new Mercury 4.6-liter V8 Verado 450R features a 2.4-liter twin-screw supercharger and a Sport Master gearcase. It is lightweight at only about 70o pounds. It’s available with a 25-inch shaft or a 20-inch shaft. The three-year warranty should give you confidence that your motor will last a long time on the water. Also, it runs on 89-octane pump gas, which makes it easy to refuel. The 450R is one of the best motors you can get these days.

Evinrude Motors

Evinrude Motors

Evinrude offers a new 150 horsepower E-TEC, which is a 1.9-liter three-cylinder direct-injected two-stroke engine. It has a good fuel efficiency of 12 mpg at a fast pace on a 20-foot boat. These 150 horsepower outboard motors can be used on all kinds of boats because they can be controlled via a mechanical steering cable, external hydraulic, integrated power steering, and even a tiller. All in all, these Evinrude motors are pretty simple to operate!

Torqueedo Travel 1103C Motors

Torqueedo is known for big outboard motors called Deep Blue motors, which are up to 80-horsepower equivalent. However, those types of motors are only designed for the megayachts of billionaires. While one of those 80-horse motors and its BMW-developed battery pack sells for more than $50,000, the new Travel 1103C is under $3,000, and it is perfect for any boat that weighs less than about 3,400 pounds. The new Travel 1103C has an onboard 915 Wh lithium battery, and it can run for six hours at half-throttle, which could mean up to 20 miles of range (depending on your boat). The Torqueedo is perfect for a small motorboat—it only makes 33 dB of noise and weighs less than 40 pounds. What’s more, you can extend the battery life by charging it with a solar panel while you are boating.

Yamaha XTO Offshore Motors

Yamaha XTO

Because some modern center console boats stretch well beyond 50 feet, Yamaha has built an engine designed for these types of boats: the 425 horsepower XTO Offshore . This is a 5.6-liter V8 with direct fuel injection. It also features integrated power steering, and it can weigh up to 1000 pounds. According to Yamaha’s performance report, four of these motors on the back of a 41-foot Regulator center console will allow it to reach a speed of almost 65 mph.

Suzuki DF350A Motors

suzuki motorboats

Although Suzuki is better known as a mainstream value brand, the new DF350A motor shows that they are trying to get into the high-horsepower game. The DF350A is a big 4.4-liter naturally aspirated V6, which uses two counter-rotating propellers to increase hookup and negate torque effects. This can be important and economical for single-engine boats. For example, on a Sea Pro 239, the DFA350A pushed the boat to 54 mph and got 3.35 mpg while cruising in the high 20s. Quad 350s pushed an aluminum Gaudet 38 to 65.8 mph. So, the DF350A offers a lot of horsepower for the price. While the MSRP is $31,565, it is possible to get slightly used DF350As for much less than that.

Hangkai 6.5HP Outboard Motors

Hangkai motors

These are some of the best motors you can buy because they are powerful yet fuel-efficient. The 6.5 Hp 4 stroke engine is well-designed with an ergonomic handle and a comfortable grip, which helps you carry it easily, especially because it is relatively light. It can power a boat carrying a load of 4 people, but the boat will go faster when fewer people are onboard. The motor has a 12-liter gas tank that uses pure gasoline. It has a pump impeller with a start rope and start key for easy ignition. It also features a water cooling system to prevent overheating.

Sea Dog Water Sports Motor

If you want a boat primarily for maneuvering through narrow areas and for towing people, then this Sea Dog motor will provide all the necessary power you need. It is a 2 stroke outboard engine with 2.5 horsepower, enough to power a small motorboat. It has a 1.2-liter fuel capacity , and it uses gasoline and oil mixed at a ratio of 25:1. It is air-cooled and has an economical, compact design that makes it easy to carry around. It has a CDI ignition system as well as a recoil (manual) start system. Its idling speed is 3,000 rpm, and the propeller’s diameter is only 18cm, which allows it to run quietly with minimal noise.

Make the Most of your Motorboat Rental!

Just like the car industry, the boating industry is full of all kinds of motor manufacturers that compete to build and sell the best motors for their market. When it comes to selecting a motor, it all depends on the kind of motorboat you might be buying. Big brand names like Mercury, Yamaha, Evinrude, and Suzuki have dominated the industry for decades, but now we are starting to see companies like Hangkai making a splash. It is a great idea to rent a motorboat through Boatsetter and do the research and try out all of these brands by seeing how they look on the back of a boat at some of the country’s biggest boat shows .

If you are considering these types of motors for a boat you might want to purchase, it is a good idea to rent a motorboat through Boatsetter so that you can try out some of your options before you buy your boat. Also, remember that the costs of owning a boat can be higher than you might expect. You will need to factor in some other aspects of boat ownership: storage, boat insurance , maintenance, and all of the various licenses you might need. Built for versatility, these boats can be used in both salt water and freshwater. They are designed to navigate many different types of waterways so you can pursue many different species of fish.

EXPLORE NOW

Small lightweight and, durable trailer boats made of aluminum are most often used for freshwater fishing. Generally very simple craft, featuring riveted or welded aluminum hulls and bench seating, they can be operated in fish-friendly places - shallow water, coves, inlets - not many other boats can reach. Powered primarily by outboard engines, this type of boat offers both tiller and remote steering options.

Bass boats have low, sleek profiles and are built to fish with two or three anglers on board. The minimum length of bass boats starts with 16 feet and can go up to 26 feet.

These boats are popular in coastal areas where sea trout and redfish live. They can float and run in water less than two feet deep and are ideal for fishing with two to three people on board.

These family boats are the most popular in the runabout/spotboat category and are equipped with extra seats and forward access to the bow, a convenient spot to relax and sun.

Recreational by nature, Cabin Cruisers are generally equipped with cooking, sleeping and bathroom facilities and are ideal for those who want to feel the sun above and the ocean below.

These open fishing boats are built to take rough offshore waters in pursuit of ocean fish. Rod holders, outriggers and other gear are common fittings onboard.

Cuddy cabins are ideal for day cruising, watersports, and other on-the-water activities such as fishing and swimming.

Deck boats have wide deck to carry 8 to 12 or more passengers (like pontoons) but look and perform more like runabouts. They are powerful, too, making them excellent boats for skiing, tubing and wakeboarding.

Dinghies are small, easy-to-transport craft, most often used as companion boats for larger vessels.

This craft allows boaters to enjoy the two most popular on-water activities; fishing and skiing. This family fishing and recreational boat has enough power to pull a skier or two, and to get to the fishing spot in short order.

High performance boats are the sleek sports cars of the boating world, offering high speeds and precise handling to boaters who prefer their thrills full throttle. Marrying big horsepower with sleek hulls results in boats that are equally at home slicing through ocean swells or tearing up inland lakes. Cranking offshore or simply relaxing in a cove, performance boats deliver lots of smiles per hour.

Inflatable boats range in size from 8-foot dinghies for tenders to 30-foot high performance boats. These boats are suitable for saltwater and freshwater fishing, watersports and more.

Like bowriders and deckboats, they offer comfortable seating and sunning areas, plus a speedy and exciting ride. They are distinguished from runabouts by their propulsion system, which is enclosed inside the hull.

Large boats equipped with powerful single or twin engines, these craft are ideal for ocean cruising, navigating large rivers or the Great Lakes, as well as entertaining at the dock, and can stay on the water for days.

Featuring two or three hulls, rather than the more common single hull, multi-hull powerboats include designs for hardcore freshwater and saltwater fishing, as well as recreational and cruising, complete with expected amenities.

Personal watercrafts (PWCs), often known by their brand names of "Jet Ski" or "WaveRunner," have evolved overtime into a broad market now characterized by craft more similar to a snowmobile, featuring a saddle and handlebars and capable of hauling one-to-three passengers.

Pontoon boats give families with younger boaters a secure place to enjoy the ride or toddle about when at anchor, thanks to wide decks and "play pen-like" side rails and gates. When equipped with larger engines they can be as quick as runabouts.

Sailboats differ from other types of boats in that they are propelled partly or entirely by wind; they use sails to transform the power of the wind into power that moves the boat through the water. The term sailboat covers a wide variety of sailing craft, each with its own characteristics and styles.

Carve the morning glass on skis, soar over the wakes on a wakeboard, or surf an endless wave…ski/wake/surf boats are your gateway to fun!

These boats are great for pursuing large fish. Often equipped with sleeping berths, a galley for cooking and plumbing for convenience, they have the capacity to stay on the water for days.

Facilities for sleeping, cooking and plumbing provide boating fun for weekends on the water with family and friends. They can handle big rivers, lakes and oceans on moderate days.

These boats may be the ultimate family fishing boats and are most popular in coastal waters, large bays and the Great Lakes where anglers pursue salmon or offshore ocean species. They are equipped with rod holders, livewells and steps to the forward deck to make it easy to follow a big fish around the boat.

The Best Boat Brands

Werner Brandes

If you're looking for a new boat, here's a list of boat brands that include the most reliable models available. The best boat brands include those from major manufacturers including Sea Ray Boats, Bayliner, MasterCraft and more. Boats can be categorized into three main types: unpowered or human-powered boats (rafts, canoes, kayaks, gondolas); boats that are propelled by their sails (sailboats); and boats that are propelled by engines (motorboats).

When considering what type of boat you should buy, shoppers should think about a few basic things. Where are you going to use the boat? The best brand of boat will be different depending on whether you are looking for a yacht to party on in the ocean, a gondola to take in a river, a sailboat to use on the coast or a motorboat to take in a lake or bay. How many people do you expect to take on your boat? Is this boat just for you and your partner or do you hope to be able to fit your entire family on the boat? Size of the hull, deck and cabins should all be taken into consideration.

This list will consider all engine and sail-powered boats. So what are the most popular boat brands? Users looking for a new boat will want to research a variety of different brands to find the one that best suits their needs according to design, name brand, buoyancy, size, propulsion and price.

Best Power Boats of 2024: Review and Buying Guide

XO 250

BENETEAU GRAN TURISMO 40

FOUR WINNS VISTA 255

FOUR WINNS VISTA 255

Chris Riley

For experienced and beginner boaters, nothing is more irresistible than the experience of cruising the open water aboard a powerful watercraft. The cool breeze and splash of water on the face, the foamy waves that trail the boat as it cuts through the water, and the sheer ecstasy that comes from steering a boat are all too strong to resist.

However, you need a good quality powerboat to experience all of these and more. For this reason, we have written this guide to show you five of the very best powerboats available on the market. Beyond that, you will find everything you need to know about choosing a good-quality boat and the category that best suits you. But before we get into all of that, let’s take a look at what powerboats are, albeit briefly.

What is a Power Boat?

Powerboat is a broad term that describes different categories of boats with engines. It can be a small boat for fishing or a larger one that can accommodate an entire family for long-distance cruises. The term even covers high-performance boats with every amenity a modern watercraft can have. Powerboats come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes, and they are best suited to different uses.

That’s about all the lessons on powerboats you’ll find in this article.

Considering the numerous options, it can be an uphill task to choose just one, especially if it is your first boat. Thankfully, you are reading this guide, which means that you should be able to select the perfect watercraft that matches your needs in a few minutes from now.

Now, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of the best power boats and what to look for when buying one.

The XO 250 is fabricated from a 5083 marine-grade aluminum hull, making it lightweight and extremely durable. There is a lot of attention to detail in this boat, with neat internal lines that allow for plenty of built-in features.

It comes with a shock-absorbing bucket seat, and all the instruments and switches are conveniently located. The seating position is sited perfectly and gives clear visibility over the bow without the need to stand while helming fast.

The XO 250 features a 12V drawer fridge, an optional radar arch, a big plotter and sounder, and the bow has four beautifully molded lockers. The battery switch and stainless fuel tank are easy to access.

The XO 250 is the perfect powerboat for you if you want a watercraft that combines seakeeping, practicality, and style.

AXOPAR 28 TT

AXOPAR 28 TT

If you want a powerboat that is distinctively solid like German cars, perhaps the Axopar 28 TT will be your best option. The GPR-built boat has an aggressive and radical styling.

The typical Scandinavian craft has a deck and cockpit areas that are designed extensively in G2 Flexiteek. Rock-solid guard rails top the high bulwarks moving forward. Even in out-of-sight places like the anchor locker is superbly finished without the slightest compromise that is often the norm in such hidden areas.

Under the double sun pad of the Axopar 28 TT is a carefully hidden double berth that can be accessed through the aft bench seat. So if you need to spend the night somewhere tranquil, you will find enough room to accommodate even the largest couples.

The forward seating area can be converted into a second sunbathing spot to complement the aft sun pad. The boat also has a large bathing platform that can comfortably accommodate a semi-deflated inflatable craft.

From the French yard comes the Beneteau Gran Turismo 40 – a 40-footer that seeks to do things slightly different from the norm.

This powerboat comes with a regimented standard layout, including a chaise longue forward to port, a wet bar opposite a cockpit that has a C-shaped dinette right behind it, and a double helm to starboard located at both sides of the central companionway.

There is a central double berth in the forward cabin below, a saloon located in the middle with galley and head on the one hand and dinette on the other, and a center cabin that comes with two berths.

The boat is extremely lightweight without feeling that way. The hull is designed to take punishment without flinching one bit. There is plenty of room and seats in the cockpit.

The Four Winns Vista 255 is a capable weekender for a couple or small family. Although it a fairly fast and efficient boat, it is not designed to be a sports boat, making it an excellent choice for easy cruising for the weekend.

It is worth noting that the cockpit is well elevated, especially considering its size. This means you will have excellent visibility, whether standing or seating. There is a convertible sunbed/back seat set up in the cockpit. This set up features a tilting backrest that can turn the spot into a seat facing aft so that you can watch skiers, swimmers, and anything that catches your interest.

The galley is equipped with a microwave and a small fridge, with enough room to accommodate a bigger fridge. Opposite the galley is the main cabin with a 6 ft 3-inches headroom. There is a full head complete with a shower, toilet, and sink. The convertible double bed/dinette is positioned diagonally. The mid-cabin has a queen-sized bed.

What to Look for In a Power Boat – Buying Guide

You have three choices when it comes to buying a powerboat (or any boat for that matter). These include a custom-made boat, a brand new boat, and a used one (in good condition). Whatever your choice, there are a few fundamental considerations that you shouldn’t compromise on, as they will determine whether or not you will enjoy your investment.

The following are the important things to consider.

  • Engine accessibility : How easy is it to access the engine? Choose a boat with a readily accessible engine area to make it easy to reach the battery and check fluid levels.
  • Visibility: According to Rule 15 of the United States Coast Guard Navigation Rules, all powered vessels must keep out of the way of boats approaching from the starboard. The problem is that visibility isn’t always good from the helm station of some boats. And if you can’t see your forward starboard quadrant, you might collide with an oncoming boat or run into some problems. So make sure you choose a powerboat that provides adequate visibility from the helm. As much as possible, avoid boats with obstructions caused by permanent fixtures, windshield mullions, hardtop supports, bulkheads, and overhead brows.
  • Electronic needs : This is pretty straightforward. You want to choose a boat that has enough space for your entire electronics packages such as radar/chart plotter overlay, marine radio , radio tester, and a Wi-Fi and cellular range booster.
  • Customization : Owning a boat means having the ability to customize it or include upgrades. For this reason, it is best to choose one that offers flexible customization options. For example, can you add or detach furniture? Can you make an upgrade to the galley?

It is also helpful if you read reviews from boaters who already purchased the type of powerboat you intend to buy. There are a good number of online boating forums where you can find useful first-hand information from boat owners. Are they pleased with the specific model you want? What are their concerns and complaints?

Here’s one more thing to consider. If you are buying a new boat or dealing with a manufacturer, find out if they have a comprehensive after-sales service. You want to choose a manufacturer that will continue to maintain a one-on-one relationship and an open communication channel with clients.

If you are in the market for a powerboat for cruising with your family, consider one with comfortable cabin space. For boating in the tropics or hot regions, you will need a boat with air conditioning systems.  Consider ample seating, too, because cruising with family and friends is a lot more fun and enjoyable when everyone has a comfortable place to sit and relax on the deck.

If what you want is a powerboat for offshore fishing, consider a boat with angler-friendly storage. A spacious deck where you can cast unhindered is equally important, too. Pay attention to the hull design, as a deep V-shaped hull cuts better through rough waters. Lastly, consider getting a fuel-efficient powerboat for offshore fishing, as this will reduce expenses on fuel.

Choosing the Right Power Boat

Having a list of the best power boats and knowing what makes a good one will not be of much help if you can’t make up your mind on which type to get. As you probably already know, these boats come in a wide variety with a vast range of hull forms, construction materials, and plenty of options in terms of propulsion and power.

To help you decide on which powerboat is right for you, we’ve outlined some of the more common types and their best use. This is not a comprehensive list, though, and that’s because powerboats encompass so many boat types from the small 12-footer tender to the ocean-crossing crawler and every other thing in between. So, we’ve left out some categories such as hovercrafts, personal watercraft, and catamarans.

Essentially, we’ve cut down the list to include rapid monohulls that are a great starting point for any beginner boater looking for the best power boats that suit their needs.

1. Bowriders

A bowrider is a great choice if you want a powerboat with a compact platform and adequate lounging space upfront. The open bows make them particularly suitable for frolicking on sunny days.

Although bowriders have come to be known with a traditional shape that features tapered forward lines, other options that present a whole lot of newer and spacious formats are now available. The space ahead of the helm in the traditional bowrider is quite tight. To allow for more internal seating room, newer versions have beams that are further forward, but the trade-off is a little bit of the sporting ability and aesthetic appeal of the traditional shape.

A classic traditional bowrider is the Sea Ray 190 SPX , while newer formats include Bayliner Element XR7 and Interboat Neo 7.

Here are a few things to look for in a bowrider that can perform excellently well in water sports:

  • Extra cockpit seating
  • Powerful inboard engines
  • Automated throttle
  • Wakeboard towers
  • Wake-tweaking devices (e.g., fins, and ballast tanks)

2. Cabin Style Power Cruisers

If accommodation is topmost in the things you want in a powerboat, the cabin style power cruisers might be your best bet.

These powerboats fall into two broad categories:

  • The sporty craft – small design with compact cabins in the bow.
  • The people carrier – broader and more spacious designs with an emphasis on comfy accommodation rather than performance.

Whichever option that appeals to you, you need to consider convertible furniture to create more sleeping room. A galley at the top means more accommodation below deck. On the flip side, a cabin style powerboat with the galley below the decks creates more space at the sun deck for seating. So, make sure to choose an option that suits your accommodation needs.

Here’s a quick tip: if you are thinking of buying a cabin style powerboat as your first boat, you don’t have to break the bank to get a massive boat, even if you can. It is best to start with a smaller and cheaper option that is more efficient and manageable.

You would have learned how to operate a boat better and with more confidence in a short while. And using it for a season, you would be able to say for sure what shape and size work best for you.

Some of the best power boats fall in the category of hard-hulled planing crafts with built-in inflatable collars. These are particularly suited for water sports, fishing, lounging, diving, and load carrying.

In the end, your intended usage, price, and size will determine what type of RIBS you buy, but it is important to note some of the options. RIBS constructed from Hypalon are last longer but are more expensive than PVC-constructed tubes. Your driving style will also come into play when you consider seating features, which include traditional jockey seats, leaning posts, benches, and impact-mitigation seats.

The power option depends a lot on the type of boater you consider yourself to be. So, before you choose a fit-out and hull shape , think about how you would typically use a powerboat.

4. Center Console Powerboats

When it comes to versatility, center console powerboats take the lead. You can use them for angling or even for taking your family on long smooth rides.

Select one with less built-in furniture and an emptier deck if these type of boats appeal to you. This way, you can add the furniture that matches your needs the most. Many center console powerboats have less weight due to the inclusion of only basic facilities, which means they cost a lot less than other options. Also, they generally tend to have greater running efficiency and more agile handling because they weigh less.

5. Sport Yacht

Sport yachts are the best power boats for traveling long distances. They are faster and sleeker than traditional yachts but come with spacious cabins for overnight and extended stays. If you intend to entertain guests, this category of powerboats would be your best option. They combine luxury and performance.

For those who want to be the party, consider getting one of these powerboats that come with a full galley or one with the option for convenient upgrades to modern kitchen facilities such as a good-quality boat grill .

6. Walkaround Fisher

Lastly, there’s the Walkaround Fisher category for those who prefer a “hybrid” powerboat of some sort. If you want a powerboat that does a bit of everything, consider getting a Walkaround Fisher. A good choice would be the compact Trophy 2152 Walkaround with a small cabin for fishing and water sports.

Choosing a powerboat can be quite daunting considering all the options available, but you don’t have to settle for less than what you want. You can be sure that there’s a boat out there that matches your need no matter what it is. Do not compromise on the features that work well for you. Study the boats on this list, and you’re sure to find one that suits you.

Popular Synthetic Oil Brands Ranked Worst To Best

Engine oil being poured into engine

The bane of nearly every motorist's existence is the simple oil change. Sure, we all know we need to get it done, as we're often told by the vehicle itself — not to mention our mechanics and our parents — that it's a necessary evil. Still, it's a bit of a chore, and the fear of an aggressive upseller at the lube shop is always looming.

Many vehicles produced today require full synthetic motor oil to be added when the used stuff is changed out. In an effort to help both do-it-yourselfers and car owners presented with a bevy of options at the shop, we've ranked ten of the most popular brands of synthetic oil. While all oils meet quality standards set by the American Petroleum Institute, we've ranked them by more intangible qualities -– things like user reviews, warranty information, brand recognition, and more.

If you're looking for an oil filter to go with that oil change, SlashGear has you covered with our list of the best oil filter brands . Further, if a broader  motor oil brand ranking is something you might be interested in, we've got one of those lists as well.

One last note — we've linked five-quart jugs of 5W-30 Full Synthetic oil with our descriptions, but it's important to note what weight and amount of oil is required for your specific vehicle. That information can be found in the owner's manual and usually on the engine's oil fill cap as well.

AmazonBasics

bottles of AmazonBasics oil

If one is just looking to get some oil in the engine because that light that most folks don't recognize anymore — it's an oil can — has kicked on, AmazonBasics fits the bill with a practically-generic product. The company that started with books and might be getting into the mobile service industry soon took on the motor oil business in 2018.

Expectedly, Amazon's self-branded oil costs less than any of its competitor's synthetic offerings on the site, but it's not a terrible option by any means. In fact, it's well-regarded among drivers who have trusted this newer offering in their cars' engines.

At under $25 for a five-quart bottle, it's unsurprising that Amazon's oil has over 25,000 ratings and 4.8 stars on their website — as long as those vehicles using the oil aren't seizing up or exploding, drivers are likely to consider the savings more than enough of a reason to leave a five-star review. However, even after a little research, AmazonBasics oil is still proven to be a reliable product. Independent YouTube videos testing its properties prove Amazon holds its own against other brands in a number of different situations. While these tests are in no way definitive, they should encourage users who doubted the quality of the product to give AmazonBasics a shot.

Motul barrels and clothing

Volkswagen. Renault. GM. These are just a few of the auto manufacturers who trust their engines to stay lubricated with Motul products, and Motul responded to that trust by making specific lines of motor oil for each of those automakers. The company has also been recommended by Honda, Hyundai, and Toyota — the list of manufacturers goes on and on.

The French motor oil company is perhaps best known for its applications in motorsports, but Motul is just as comfortable in the DIY and daily driver arenas. Its various lubricants of oil are recommended by manufacturers, technicians, classic car restorers, and heavy machinery operators. Motul's variations on its 8100 line, much like their Specific lines for individual manufacturers, feature distinct formulations of motor oil for different engines.

A 4.9 star rating on Amazon from more than 1,500 ratings proves that many drivers are willing to pay more for a quality product, and Motul has demonstrated that its formulations provide superior performance for customers.

Amsoil branded race car

An independent American oil company founded by a former fighter squadron commander, AMSOIL created the first synthetic motor oil that met the American Petroleum Institute's service requirements. AMSOIL's lineup of all-synthetic motor oils now goes above and beyond the American Petroleum Institute's standards, providing 75% more engine protection against wear and horsepower loss.

AMSOIL's high quality standards have earned it a 4.7 star rating and many positive reviews on Amazon, and over 4,500 reviews and a 5 star rating on their own store site. You'll find a gallon of AMSOIL (AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-30 Synthetic) available for around  $58  direct from their online store. AMSOIL also offers a guarantee of 25,000 miles or a year from installation, with no restrictions on that warranty based on the mileage of the vehicle in which it is installed.

Additionally, for buyers who put importance on the source of their purchases, AMSOIL is formulated, blended, and packaged in the United States.

Quaker State

Quaker State oil on shelf

One of the oldest brands on our ranking, the Quaker State name was first used in 1912 when the Phinny Brothers Oil Company of Oil City, Pennsylvania, wanted to use a title for their brand that stood out among competitors. Despite changing hands a few times –- most recently when it was purchased by Shell in 2002 –- Quaker State has retained its brand name and reputation since the beginning of the 20th century.

In 2014, Quaker State was rewarded for its years of positive branding and high quality product with a branding relationship with Hyundai. The Korean automaker agreed to carry and install only Quaker State oils in its new vehicles and in dealership service locations.

Quaker State, with its recognizable green-and-gold packaging, has one of the best warranties in the business. Since 2011, the oil company has been rewarding users of their specialty motor oils, including full synthetic, with a cash bonus if their vehicle goes from under 75,000 miles to over 300,000. There are, of course, conditions that apply, but the company does have a Hall of Fame on its website that features several "Cash Back Bonus" qualifiers. The brand has even inspired a chain of gas stations-turned-restaurants called Quaker Steak and Lube!

Shell oil or gas truck

Shell PLC is the fifth-largest oil company in the world and second only to Exxon Mobil Corp on the New York Stock Exchange. Shell owns a variety of brands and products ranging from gasoline to coolant to lubricants for electric vehicles and transformers. Not bad for a company that started out importing seashells for collectors — hence the shell logo – in 1833.

Since our focus today is synthetic motor oil, we'll take a look at Shell's Rotella line of synthetic oils. Lube techs across the nation know Rotella as one of the most popular diesel oils on the market, a clean and reliable full synthetic oil that can be used in both diesel and gasoline engines. Customers frequently bring their own cases of the dependable oil with their diesel trucks, and fleet managers appreciate the ability to use Rotella in both gas and diesel engines as a cost-saving option.

While Shell PLC is the owner of several of the brand names on our list, Rotella is one of their best-known products under their own label.

Royal Purple

Royal Purple oil going into funnel

While other oil brands on this list are well known, Royal Purple is one that's always been popular but also flies a bit under the radar. People in the know, however, are always willing to testify on the benefits of the purple powerhouse known as Royal Purple.

It's a company that's been producing motor oils since the 1980s but only began selling motor oils for consumer use in 2003. Royal Purple's pedigree in both industrial use and motorsports gave it a great reputation even before motorists began using its products, and its decision to add a purple dye to the oil definitely made the product seem more unique when compared to other engine lubricants.

Royal Purple's brand of synthetic motor oil, which is enhanced with a trademarked blend of additives, is reasonably priced, well regarded, and sports a 4.9 star average on Amazon with nearly 4,000 ratings. That's a lot more than just a crazy color on an average product –- that's Royal Purple combining savvy marketing with great synthetic motor oil.

Pennzoil bottles on shelf

A company founded in 1913 with origins in Pennsylvania, Pennzoil is one of three brands on our ranking under the larger Shell banner. Pennzoil's synthetic oil line is unique in that it's made with natural gas rather than crude. That base oil, according to the company, has fewer of the impurities found in the crude base other companies start out with. The result is a line of synthetic oils that are purported to keep pistons cleaner, deliver better fuel economy, and work better in extreme temperatures.

Pennzoil's full synthetic offering features a 4.8 star average on Amazon and an impressive ratings count of nearly 11,000. The company's century-plus history, along with the claim that using Pennzoil will protect for 15 years and add an extra 550 miles per year on average, contribute to customers' loyalty and willingness to share their success stories with others. Despite all these benefits, the price range for even Pennzoil's high-end Ultra Platinum motor oil line is still markedly lower than several of its competitors' products.

Valvoline oil change shop

Motor oils, generally speaking, are meant to protect against engine breakdown by limiting friction, wear, heat, and deposits. Valvoline focuses on those factors in the formulation of its synthetic oil to offer a product that meets or exceeds the requirements of five different industry standards, including those set by ILSAC and the American Petroleum Institute.

In addition, Valvoline lays claim to being America's first motor oil brand, having been founded in 1866 when Dr. John Ellis discovered that distilled crude oil made a good lubricant. Valvoline oil was later trademarked as the world's first petroleum-based lubricant in 1873.

Valvoline's synthetic motor oil lineup features formulations for a number of different applications, whether it's hybrid tech, European vehicles, cars with higher mileage, or even racing applications. The company's incredibly long history has led to an incredible amount of feedback on Amazon as well, with over 22,600 ratings and a 4.8 star average. At under $27 for a five-quart bottle of Advanced Full Synthetic, Valvoline manages to balance value, great engine protection, and a long history of reliability.

Bottles of Castrol GTX in shop

Castrol is a London-based company that got its start back in 1899 when it made the discovery that the addition of castor oil to lubricants designed for airplanes and automobiles thinned the mixture enough to allow it to work from cold starts while still maintaining viscosity at high operating temperatures.

Castrol's focus — at least in its marketing — is on making a motor oil that's designed primarily to fight the buildup of sludge in an engine. To that end, its GTX Full Synthetic is reportedly better at protecting against the buildup of sludge in engines when compared to the API's standard. In addition, GTX also provides wear protection six times better than that standard. Further, the Edge line of synthetics boasts the ability to maintain engine protection for 10,000 miles while also being a carbon-neutral product.

Amazon reviews for the product reveal a 4.8 star average, although only a little over 3,500 reviewers have left a rating -– far less than the last few entries on our rankings, but enough to show the loyalty from the Castrol crowd. That isn't limited to just customers, as Castrol Edge is the OEM partner of several of the world's largest automakers, including Honda, Volvo, Land Rover, Jaguar, Subaru, Ford, and Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi.

mobil 1 bottles

In a choice that is likely unsurprising to most gearheads, Mobil 1 tops our rankings of popular synthetic oil brands. This best-selling product, made by the largest oil company in the world, ExxonMobil, has maintained a stellar name over years of performance in both motorsports and customer vehicles. The company's long history as a part of John Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company goes back over 140 years, and its name is synonymous with both gasoline and motor oil among hundreds of other products and industries.

Mobil 1 has a great reputation as the best motor oil available, with nearly every comparison video on YouTube pitting new competition against the established favorite. Its full synthetic formulation provides protection in extreme temperatures, minimizes timing chain wear, and protects engines for up to 10,000 miles between oil changes.

In fact, Mobil 1 is the number one best-selling motor oil on Amazon. 4.8 stars from nearly 37,000 ratings and page after page of positive reviews. A quick shopping search on Google reveals even more accolades, with 4.9 star review averages at retailers like Lowe's, Autozone, and Walmart.

I Asked 5 Food Editors To Name the Best Canned Beans—They All Said the Same Brand

You can find them everywhere.

top motorboat brands

Simply Recipes / Ciara Kehoe

You’ve likely been in this particular situation before. There’s a recipe you want to cook—maybe a white chicken chili or a chana masala —and you need to grab a can of beans. Yet, with so many options on the shelf, how do you know you’re grabbing the best-tasting bean for your recipe?

Are they all the same, or are some better than others? You’re probably experiencing decision fatigue at this point, so you give up altogether and grab the cheapest one. So what if I took on the decision-making process for you?

I reached out to five food editors and asked them about their favorite canned bean brand. Not just the type of bean but the actual brand. This means that no matter what kind of bean you need, you’ll know you’re getting a high-quality choice with beans that actually taste good. Thankfully, all of these editors steered me in the same direction.

The Food Editors I Asked

  • Myo Quinn: Associate Editorial Director at Simply Recipes
  • Laurel Randolph: Senior Recipe Editor at Simply Recipes
  • Amanda McDonald: Commerce Updates Editor at The Spruce Eats
  • Carolyn Malcoun: Associate Editorial Director at EatingWell
  • Olivia Tarantino: Managing Editor at Eat This, Not That!

The Best Canned Bean Brand, According to Food Editors

Food editors agree that store brands such as 365 by Whole Foods Market are the best beans to buy when grocery shopping.

Whole Foods carries a variety of canned beans—both organic and traditional—in cans with BPA-free lining. You can snag all of the major bean varieties, such as black beans, navy beans, pinto beans, kidney beans, garbanzo beans, and more. They’re tasty and canned with simple, whole ingredients, making them an easy go-to.

In addition, many of the editors like this particular choice for canned beans because of their “No Salt Added” options.

“It’s great to have control over the seasonings, so I can tailor each dish exactly how I like it,” says Tarantino. “My absolute favorite is the [365 brand] Organic Bean Trio—a blend of kidney, pinto, and black beans. When I’m cooking for myself, it’s a total game-changer. I don’t have to open three different cans to get that classic combo, which makes managing portions so much easier.”

“I like these because there is less salt without it being a ‘low sodium’ option,” says McDonald. However, McDonald also points out that while Whole Foods 365 is a go-to brand, she also enjoys buying dried beans when making recipes like soup or chili, where the beans can cook in the broth with other ingredients, which helps make them more flavorful.

What if you don’t live near a Whole Foods Market? While Malcoun doesn’t shop at Whole Foods herself, she does agree that store-brand organic canned beans are a great option regardless of where you get them, and tend to be competitive in price compared to the non-organic varieties.

“I don't feel like there's any difference between a store brand and a branded product when it comes to canned beans,” she says. “There's also a huge variety of store branded beans—including low-sodium and no-salt-added varieties.”

Canned beans such as 365 by Whole Foods Market are great starting points for many recipes, and are perfect for busy weeknights when you don’t know what to throw together. Some of my favorite easy dinners to make with canned beans include black bean burrito bowls , this easy tuscan bean soup , and this creamy polenta with white beans and roasted broccoli .

Paul Weller has been beloved in his home country of the U.K. for well over half a century. He’s been working as a soloist for many years after finding commercial success as part of groups like The Jam and The Style Council. He’s so popular that even his older projects can become bestsellers...as long as fans are given a new reason to buy.

The rocker’s Fly On The Wall - B Sides & Rarities returns to several charts and even manages to debut on one list in the U.K. this week. The compilation isn’t exactly new, though. Weller released the project in 2003, but now it’s become a win all over again.

Fly On The Wall was recently re-released as a three-LP deluxe edition. Superfans of the rock musician clearly wanted to support him and own a copy of the expanded compilation, and all their purchases helped the title stand out as a major win all over again.

Weller’s B-sides collection debuts at No. 6 on the Official Albums Sales chart in the U.K. He earns his milestone tenth top 10 hit on the list of the bestselling full-lengths and EPs in the nation, regardless of format or style.

Fly On The Wall earns the fifth-highest-ranking debut on the Official Albums Sales chart this frame, as the upper reaches of the tally are dominated by exciting new releases. Weller’s decades-old release—which is new to the purchase-only roster—comes in behind Beabadoobee, Will Young, Elles Bailey, and even Elvis Presley, who appears just one slot ahead of him.

On the former, it lands at No. 6. Weller’s 2003 bestseller nearly conquered the vinyl-only list, as it re-launches in the runner-up rung.

Hyundai Motor Company’s brands, Hyundai and Kia, received an A- credit rating from S&P Global.

“The upgrade to our global credit rating will likely lead to reduced capital financing costs. We will continue to prioritize financial stability and enhance our global competitiveness by adapting to market trends,” stated an official at Hyundai Motor Group.

Hyundai and Kia’s previous S&P Global credit rating was BBB+. The companies’ current A- ratings are the seventh highest in S&P Global’s credit evaluation. S&P Global has given only six automotive companies an A credit rating, including Toyota, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

Together, the Hyundai Motor brands sold the second-highest electric vehicles in the United States last year, coming after EV giant Tesla. Hyundai and Kia EVs have won multiple awards worldwide and are recognized for their design and performance.
