Here are some suggestions where you might visit:

- Phang Nga Bay is the bay between Phuket and the Malay Peninsula. This is renowned for its limestone spires and jaw-dropping scenery, and much protected as a national park. The James Bond movie The Man With the Golden Gun was filmed here, as was Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. You can even sail to 'James Bond Island'!

- Krabi is the mainland province to the east of Phuket and includes the major tourist destination of Ao Nang. Do try to get to Rai Leh Beach - a more refined tourist resort well away from the mad crowds of Ao Nang.

- The Phi Phi Islands have two sides to them - Phi Phi Island's Phi Phi Don's no limits nightlife on its sandy beaches and nearby Ko Phi Phi Lee where you will find the exquisitely beautiful Monkey Bay where monkeys come out of the forest to feed on crab and Maya Bay made famous in the Hollywood movie The Beach. This is all a protected national park.

- The Similan Islands and Surin Islands , northwest of Phuket on the Andaman Sea are a forgotten paradise that you will visit to enjoy nature at its best. 7 days - Phang Nga Bay and Ko Phi Phi: Over seven days you can see the islands around Phuket. Heading for Phang Nga Bay on the first night, then Ko Hung, Ko Kai, and Ko Phi Phi, you will see some of the most beautiful sights of the Andaman Sea. The limestone cliffs and places like Maya Beach made famous by Hollywood on this island hopping adventure are sights you'll never forget.

10 days - Similan Islands and Surin Islands: Island hopping north up Thailand's west coast you will visit one of the best scuba diving locations in the world. There are no resorts or hotels ashore - kept as national parks they are unspoiled and left to nature. Most of the islands are uninhabited, so there will be the opportunity to drop anchor and have the beach to yourself. Did we say diving and snorkelling? Yes, thanks to the rare and endangered species of marine life that live here, you're likely to see fish that you'd never see even on other tropical island yacht charters.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Phuket

Unlike Europe, the sailing season in the Thailand runs from November to April - perfect for a dose of winter sun. The winter monsoon is settled and you will encounter weather between 25-35 degrees C.

Within this period, between November to March you will find the winds are from the NE and rarely get over Force 4.

If you can get to Thailand outside of school holidays you will find the sailing weather at its best and the resorts less crowded. Could you consider doing a Thailand yacht charter early in the Southwest Monsoon? Though the SimilanIslands are out of reach (as is anything west of Phuket) it is quieter in May - July, though this is the beginning of the rainy season that intensifies in July and runs right through til October.

The Climate

North East Monsoon: Thanks to being on the Equator the winds in Thailand never get too strong in the sailing season. Expects winds of F2-4 from the NE and it to be generally dry.

Southwest Monsoon: This runs from May to October and is the rainy season in this part of the world. Between May and July, expect winds up to F6 and changeable, and rain anything from every afternoon (or none at all) to solidly for your two weeks. Between July and October this is storm season with cyclones hitting the country and rain being almost guaranteed.

What should I consider when hiring a Yacht or Boat?

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

What are the Marinas in Phuket?

There are four marinas in Phuket - Ao Po Grand Marina, Yacht Haven Phuket, Royal Phuket Marina and Phuket BoatLagoon. All four have large charter fleets and can accommodate superyachts of up to 80 metres.

When are the best times to hire a boat in Phuket?

It is possible to sail out of Phuket year round. While the best time is between November and February during the Northeast Monsoon, you can enjoy your sailing vacation from Phuket Island as late as May in the early stages of the southwest monsoon. You won't be able to sail to the Surin Islands or anything west of Phuket as the seas are exposed to the weather.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Yacht in Phuket?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Yacht breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

What should I think of before I hire a Yacht or Boat in Phuket?

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Dress for warm weather but do have something for tropical rains - light but waterproof.

What Qualifications Do I need to hire a boat or yacht?

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skipper on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Flying To Phuket

The quickest and safest way to reach the Island Spirit Base is to fly to Phuket International Airport (HKT), the country’s second busiest. It accommodates international and domestic flights, providing convenient access to Phuket from various countries.

Overland Options

Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due.

Terms of refunds are dictated by the Charter Agreement. Generally, once a payment is collected, it is non-refundable. In certain circumstances, as dictated by the Charter Agreement, credits can be provided so you will be able to enjoy your yacht charter at a future date that is convenient for you.

Phuket is one of the best places in Southeast Asia for repair and maintenance services. Yacht Services include mobile repairs and in-water repairs at any of the island’s marinas, and full haul-out and refit services at the Boat Lagoon Marina, Royal Phuket Marina or one of Phuket Town’s slipways. There are also small yards, mainly in Chalong and Rawai that service the growing numbers of custom new builds of sailing and power craft. There are four main marinas on the island; Ao Po Grand Marina; Phuket Boat Lagoon, Royal Phuket Marina and Yacht Haven Marina. You can take on fuel and water at any one of the marinas. You can also visit one of the fuel and water barges in Ao Chalong or in Patong. Yacht Haven Marina and Ao Po Grand Marina only, have depths large enough to accommodate superyachts, while Asia Marina and Ratanachai Slipway in Phuket Town can haul-out vessels up to 500 tonnes. For haul-out and refit work there are a number of facilities. Ratanachai Slipway in Phuket Town has the capacity to haul out vessels up to 52 metres and 209.50 tonnes using its railway type slipway. Ratanachai caters to a varied customer base pleasure vessels. The yard is located up the river past the Seatran ferry terminal. Naval vessels, fishing fleets and Further up river, and the first shipyard you reach by road from Phuket Town, is Ásia Marina. With a 100 tonne to 500 tonne travel lift, Asia Marina is an alternative for large vessels wanting to haul-out. The closest dry dock is located in Satun Province. A multihull-specific boatyard to the north of Chalong Bay, with concrete ramps and two trailers customised to haul out shallow-draft catamarans up to 16 metres in length and weighing 16 tonnes. There are workers available on-site, with storage space for around 50 boats on the outdoor hardstands, and there is a good chandlery five minutes from the yard.

Jason was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. He first came to Thailand after being laid off from his corporate job working for a music record label (after a big merger). He hadn’t taken any time off between secondary school and university studies so it was a ripe time to go traveling. He left Calgary and never really looked back.

How did you get started in sailing?

I dinghy sailed a bit on the lakes in Canada but wasn’t very good as I didn’t want to fall into the cold water. I really caught on to keel boats while living in Vietnam when Morgan Hayes came into the mix establishing a yacht charter base out there and we started going out on the boats regularly. A few deliveries, sea shanties and countless beers later and I became hooked on yachting. Morgan is still one of best mates. (He’s a local Phuket yachtie as well.)

Favourite Sailing Film?

Captain Ron, but also recently The Mercy (2018) was very powerful.

Favourite Sailing Book?

Anything Dave Perry writes as he’s a great communicator and even more funny and approachable in person. Being from Canada - Farley Mowat’s The Boat Who Wouldn’t Float is a standard, and right now I’m reading Surveying Small Craft by Ian Nicolson.

Favourite Fictional Sailing Hero?

Well, my name is Jason so I’m kind of partial to that Argonaut fella but haven’t found my golden fleece yet. But I like Charles Vain and Anne Bonny from the Black Sails TV series - bad asses.

Favourite Real-Life Sailing Hero?

I’ve had the privilege of sailing with and against some Ocean Race, America’s Cup, and legendary world famous sailors but I’d have to say Henry Kaye. The guy is 80, has and is battling cancer and other ailments, and he still sails hard when he gets the chance to jump on the helm. Always provides constructive sailing chat in person, always aggressive on the water...living legend.

Favourite Marina?

Edgartown Yacht Club - Martha’s Vineyard, USA - maneuver through a skinny channel, don’t hit the small car ferry, weave through some traffic, “Captain Ron handbrake turn” and tie up to the dock literally right next to the pub. Although, if you fail the park, you will never live it down. Fortunately, I nailed the park so got the almighty head nods from all the patrons and handed a cold one.

Favourite Regatta?

I’d have to say the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race is still up there. Start in iconic Victoria Harbour amongst the Hong Kong skyline. Almost 700nm, sending it downwind, offshore, racing from warm to warmer. Get into Nha Trang and rack up a multi-million Dong bar tab. Awesome.

Favourite Anchorage?

Macleod Island, Myanmar. Imagine Koh Phi Phi in Thailand with nobody there. Crystal clear water, white sands, no big development (although it’s coming for sure).

Favourite Sailing Bar?

Three: IYAC in Newport, Corner Bar in Palma, Ska Bar in Phuket.

Favourite type of sailing boat?

Love racing multihulls, TPs, Fast 40s but I think if I could have a choice it’s the Marten 49. Racing, cruising, round the cans, round the world...my pick!

You have been living in places like New York and Poland, yet you come back to race in Phuket – what is it about the Andaman region that keeps drawing you back?

It’s just a great mix of good racing, camaraderie, and venue - on and off the water. Fierce battles on the race course become great chatter in the pub and most teams intermix in the regatta parties quite well. Delivery crews, world cruisers, pros, etc., all seem to mingle together. Besides racing, when I get a chance to cruise around as well, it’s a fantastic holiday yachting ground.

If you hadn’t spent so much time sailing, you would be...?

You studied anthropology at university; did you ever work in that field?

Not directly, but I apply things I learned every day, especially in a cross-cultural context traveling so much. Sailing with multinational teams and with a few languages on board, negotiating for spare parts in random places, etc, the degree comes in handy.

The British-flagged luxury vessel named Bayesian was carrying 22 people when it got into difficulty off the coast of Sicily. Seven bodies have now been recovered from the wreckage.

Seven bodies have been found after a superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel named Bayesian when it got into difficulty in the early hours of Monday, with 15 people rescued.

Here's what we know about the sinking of the luxury vessel so far.

What might have caused the sinking?

The British-flagged luxury vessel, named Bayesian, capsized at around 4.30am local time on Monday morning off Palermo, according to ship-tracking site Marine Traffic.

It sank in as little as 60 seconds with 22 people on board, 12 passengers and a crew of 10, according to the Italian coastguard.

Waterspouts, essentially tornados that form over water, were seen as powerful winds battered the area overnight, local media said.

The yacht may have sunk faster with all the doors open due to the hot weather, Sailing Today magazine editor Sam Jefferson has said.

"I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that," he said.

Official pictures show air conditioning units in several of the rooms, however, which could counter the suggestion open windows caused the vessel to sink faster.

The huge mast is also likely to have played a role, he added.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts typically occur during thunderstorms and can develop very rapidly, within minutes.

Their spin generally reaches wind speeds between 75-200mph, but can reach as high as 300mph.

They can travel at about 10-20mph typically but can reach greater speeds, making them difficult to avoid - especially in something as slow-moving as a yacht.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, called the reports of a tornado or waterspout "rare" and "quite alarming".

"The vessel was at anchor in a recognised anchorage," Mr Schanck said.

"Depending on wind direction and the state of the sea, this informs the captain whether it is a safe area to anchor or not. There was nothing that was too concerning, for my eye. All in all, the captain used the information they had to make a safe call."

Who owns the yacht?

The yacht belonged to the family of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch. He was confirmed to have died after rescuers found his body on Thursday. Mr Lynch was on holiday with his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who is still missing, and his wife Angela Bacares, who was rescued.

Mr Lynch, 59, was known as the " British Bill Gates " and has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case.

In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges, which were related to the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP). The yacht trip is believed to have been a celebration of the end of Mr Lynch's legal troubles.

HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American tech giant.

Mr Lynch was extradited to the US to face trial in May last year and spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco as he awaited trial on 17 charges of conspiracy and wire fraud brought by the US Department of Justice - which were later reduced to 15 charges. He always denied any wrongdoing and was acquitted.

Who was on board when the boat sank?

The passengers were largely British and American, with crew members were from New Zealand, South Africa, and Canada.

Charlotte Golunski was among the Britons rescued. Her LinkedIn profile says she is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm Invoke Capital and has worked there since 2012.

Speaking after the ordeal, Ms Golunski told Italian media that she lost her daughter Sofia for "two seconds" amid the "fury" of the sea but was able to retrieve her. She said she held the infant above the waves until the lifeboat was ready.

"Many people screamed. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us were able to get on board," she told ANSA.

The girl's father James Emsley also survived, according to Sicily's civil protection agency.

Also on board were Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley, his wife Judy Bloomer, a top US lawyer Chris Morvillo, who worked on Mr Lynch's criminal case, and his wife Neda Morvillo. Divers confirmed on Thursday that their bodies had been recovered.

The yacht's captain James Cutfield survived, along with South African crew members Leah Randall and Katja Chicken.

Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat, was the first to be found dead, the Italian Coastguard confirmed to Sky News.

During rescue efforts, divers saw "corpses through the portholes" of the wreck as they recovered the body of a man at a depth of 50m (164ft), according to Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily.

What do we know about the vessel?

The Bayesian is owned by a company controlled by Mr Lynch's wife.

It was known for its unusual 72.3m (246ft) single mast - one of the world's tallest made of aluminium - and shared its name with the statistical method Mr Lynch's Autonomy software was based on.

It was built by Italian company Perini Navi in 2008 and last refitted in 2020.

It was listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week, according to online charter sites.

The luxury vessel , which was managed by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, could accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites.

It won a string of awards for its design, according to online specialist yacht sites.

Mr Schanck, of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, said the vessel would have been equipped with "high standard" life-saving appliances and radio communications.

He added the yacht would have met all international standards and UK Maritime Coastguard Agency regulations before its voyage.

It was previously named Salute, or "health" in Italian, when it flew under a Dutch flag. Its minimalist interior featured light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions on charter sites.

What were its last movements?

The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor", according to vessel tracking site VesselFinder.

The Bayesian previously travelled to other parts of Sicily before its last sighting off the coast of the port of Porticello.

On Sunday, the boat was seen off the coast of Cefalu before it travelled towards Porticello, MarineTraffic data shows.

In the days before, the yacht travelled around four of the Aeolian islands, just north of Sicily.

Global Affairs Canada said Monday it’s aware of reports that a Canadian has died after a luxury superyacht sank off Sicily during a violent storm, while Italian authorities said they continued to search for six people who remained unaccounted for.

Global Affairs spokesperson Kevin Sweet declined to confirm any details, citing privacy. He said consular officials were in contact with local authorities.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to everyone affected by this tragic event,” the statement said.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch was among the people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

His wife, Angela Bacares, and 14 other people survived.

One body had been recovered, and police divers were trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 metres off Porticello, near Palermo, where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said.

The British-flagged “Bayesian,” a 56-metre-long sailboat, was carrying 22 people and was anchored just off shore when it was hit by ferocious weather, the Italian coast guard said in a statement.

Eyewitnesses said the yacht vanished quickly beneath the waves shortly before dawn. Fifteen people escaped before it went down, including Ms. Bacares, who owned the boat, and a one-year-old girl.

Who is Mike Lynch, missing owner of luxury yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily?

The names of the dead and missing were not immediately released, but a person familiar with the rescue operation confirmed that Mr. Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, were not accounted for.

Italian media said the dead man was the yacht’s on-board chef.

Mr. Cocina said Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and Chris Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance, were also among the missing people.

Morgan Stanley did not immediately respond to a phone call and email seeking comment after hours. Clifford Chance did not return a request for comment.

The Italian coast guard said the missing had British, American and Canadian nationalities. Survivors said the trip had been organized by Mr. Lynch for his work colleagues.

“The wind was very strong. Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude,” a coast guard official in the Sicilian capital Palermo told Reuters.

The captain of a nearby boat told Reuters that when the winds surged, he had turned on the engine to keep control of his vessel and avoid a collision with the Bayesian, which had been anchored alongside him.

“We managed to keep the ship in position and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone,” Karsten Borner told journalists. The other boat “went flat on the water, and then down,” he added.

He said his crew then found some of the survivors on a life raft – including a baby girl and her mother – and took them on board before the coast guard picked them up.

One man died and a search is underway for six people who went missing after a luxury yacht was struck by an unexpectedly violent storm and sank off the Sicilian capital Palermo, the Italian coast guard said on Aug. 19.

Mr. Lynch, 59, is one of Britain’s best-known tech entrepreneurs. He built the country’s largest software firm, Autonomy, from his groundbreaking research at Cambridge University, and became known as Britain’s Bill Gates.

He sold the firm to HP for US$11-billion in 2011, before the deal unravelled spectacularly following the acquisition, with the U.S. tech giant accusing him of fraud.

Once lauded by academics, scientists and politicians, Mr. Lynch spent much of the past decade in court defending his name. He was acquitted by a jury in San Francisco in June, after he spent more than a year living effectively under house arrest.

He said at the time that he was “elated” to be cleared in the criminal trial in which he denied any wrongdoing and blamed HP for botching the integration of the two companies.

The coast guard said divers were inspecting the wreck of the Bayesian, which was lying at a depth of 50 metres.

Prosecutors in the nearby town of Termini Imerese have opened an investigation to look into what had gone wrong.

Storms and heavy rainfall have swept down Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat, which had lifted the temperature of the Mediterranean sea to record levels, raising the risk of extreme weather conditions, experts said.

“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius, which is almost three degrees more than normal. This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms,” meteorologist Luca Mercalli said.

“We can’t say that this is all due to global warming but we can say that it has an amplifying effect,” he told Reuters.

The Bayesian was built by Italian shipbuilder Perini in 2008 and was last refitted in 2020. Its 75-metre mast is the tallest aluminum mast in the world, Perini said on its website.

The shipspotting.com website said the boat was owned by a firm called Revtom Ltd. Mr. Lynch’s wife Ms. Bacares is named as the sole shareholder of the firm on company documents.

The yacht’s name would resonate with Mr. Lynch because his PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on Bayesian theory.

The ship won a string of awards for its design and can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites and a crew of 10, according to online specialist yacht sites.

The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of “at anchor,” according to vessel tracking app Vesselfinder.
