Fertitta is chairman, president and CEO of Landry’s Restaurants, one of the largest privately owned restaurant, entertainment and gaming firms in the United States. Given that his company owns eateries ranging from the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. to the Chart House, as well as operating the Golden Nugget casinos, Fertitta knows a thing or two about hospitality. And in his role as a father of four, he understands how to keep kids entertained.

No wonder, then, that his 164-foot Westport Boardwalk reflects a mix of spaces meant for grown-up fun and family-friendly gatherings. Fertitta made Boardwalk fully his own, and different from the six deliveries in the Westport 164 series that came before her. He took full advantage of the customization that the Pacific Northwest builder offers, a level that other series builders rarely permit.

Prior to commissioning his 164, Fertitta owned a Westport 112 and then a 130, both christened Boardwalk . While each of the three models differs from the others they share some similarities. You’ll spy the first upon stepping inside from the main afterdeck doors. Directly to port, there’s a stone-top wet bar with leather-clad bar chairs. The setup worked well aboard the smaller Westports, without impinging on the rest of the salon’s space, so why not incorporate it aboard the 164, especially given the extra floor space afforded by the length overall and nearly 31-foot beam?

The other major similarity is also on the main deck. Boardwalk ‘s galley has a dining spot much like a country kitchen does. Fertitta’s 112- and 130-footers featured Westport’s standard country kitchen arrangement, and he preferred this to the stainless-steel commercial look that Westport offers as the standard galley design on the 164. Whether cruising stateside or in the Med, as Boardwalk did this summer, Fertitta wanted an open, warmer ambience where he and his family could feel welcome while the chef and stews were at work. As a result, the galley is rich with stone-top counters and wood-clad cabinetry. The welcoming feel is aided by bar stools that pull up to the island cooking area, ideal for observing the pros at work or for sneaking samples out of the pots when the chef isn’t looking.

Boardwalk incorporates a handful of other customized touches as well. There are loose furnishings on the afterdeck, easily moved when entertaining large groups or rearranged into intimate relaxation areas on private trips.

Normally an elevator rises through the trideck 164, but Fertitta specified a stairway instead, something that a few other 164 owners also chose.

Aboard Boardwalk , the stairway treads are floating affairs, with a sturdy yet elegantly curving stainless-steel handrail outboard, along the mahogany-lined walls.

To lessen the formality of the dining area, Fertitta requested a smooth flow-through from the salon, skipping the customary central buffet that acts as a room divider. The arrangement still avoids the “bowling alley” look, and it’s simultaneously family-friendly and suitable for big gatherings.

In the master, rather than have the standard separated his and her heads, Fertitta wanted one full-beam bath. In another change, the vista bar, a standard wet bar tucked forward to port off the skylounge, is more like an intimate wine-tasting area, since Fertitta has it equipped with glass-front bottle stowage. Plenty of extra televisions are aboard as well, from the main afterdeck bar to the full-beam master bath (the TV is camouflaged as artwork when off) to the galley’s dining spot. And to help set various moods day or night, plus highlight the colorful, specially commissioned artwork throughout Boardwalk , a great deal of attention was paid to lighting.

Of course, some areas aboard Boardwalk follow the standard Westport 164 layout, which has both typical and atypical features. A good example of the latter is the upper-deck VIP stateroom, which benefits from a private sun deck. There are four more guest staterooms, all on the lower deck. Fertitta can stay in touch with his various businesses while in the office within the main-deck master suite. The room doubles as a lounge, with comfortable seating opposite the desk. Doors connecting it to the owner’s foyer just aft and the sleeping area just forward can close for more privacy. And guests can watch the captain at work from a raised observation settee in the pilothouse.

The crew also benefit from keeping some things the same aboard Boardwalk . The crew’s quarters (accommodations for 10 in five cabins, in addition to the captain’s stateroom) have service access to the guest staterooms via a dedicated housekeeping area. An automatic door leads from the galley to the formal dining area, and a dumbwaiter makes serving hors d’oeuvres or full meals easier while dining abaft the skylounge. Also, when Fertitta, his family or guests want to explore an anchorage, the crew can retrieve fishing rods and dive gear and launch the tender from the garage.

The toys were put to good use this summer while Boardwalk was exploring the Mediterranean. She also put her own propulsion package to the test: twin MTU 16V 4000s, which permit a reported 20-knot cruising speed and 24-knot top end (each at half load). Range at cruising speed is reported to be 1,700 miles, though it naturally increases to 5,200 miles when speed is reduced to 12 knots.

As a repeat yacht owner, Fertitta knows what works well. Being a repeat Westport client, he also knows that a turnkey construction approach can still successfully offer tailor-made options. When a buyer and builder understand each other as well as these two do, the end result is a yacht as custom as you can get without compromising production principles.

ROME — The captain of a superyacht that sank during a storm off Sicily last week, killing seven people, decided not to respond to prosecutors’ questions Tuesday, his lawyer said.

James Cutfield, a 51-year-old New Zealand national, is under investigation for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges and was questioned for the third time by the Termini Imerese prosecutors Tuesday.

“He just exercised his right to remain silent, probably prosecutors were expecting that,” lawyer Aldo Mordiglia told The Associated Press, adding that the captain’s legal team has just been named and needs time to work on his defensive strategy.

Cutfield was among 15 survivors of the Aug. 19 sinking that killed British tech magnate Mike Lynch , his daughter Hannah and five others.

Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio, who’s heading the investigation, has said his team would consider each possible element of responsibility including those of the captain, the crew, individuals in charge of supervision and the yacht’s manufacturer.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged luxury yacht, went down near the Mediterranean island in southern Italy. Investigators are focusing on how a sailing vessel deemed “unsinkable” by its manufacturer, Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.

Prosecutors said the event was “extremely rapid” and could have been a “downburst” — a localized, powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm and spreads out rapidly upon hitting the ground.

The crew was saved, except for the chef, while six passengers were trapped in the hull.

Sometimes all it takes is a set of fresh eyes. Designer Chris Lane penned a superyacht concept as the final project for his college degree several years ago. The 164-footer, which Lane called Aegir, is both fresh and buildable.

“I wanted to create a disruptive charter concept that wasn’t just based on cruising the Mediterranean but leans into wellness—as if the boat is a floating retreat,” Lane told Robb Report .

By drawing on the Danish hygge philosophy, which roughly translates to creating a warm and inviting atmosphere, Lane carved out relaxing nooks across the yacht where guests can be together. On the main forward deck is a large fire pit surrounded by a curved sofa facing out to sea. A second fire pit runs the length of the outdoors dining table at the rear of the deck, providing a theatrical talking point during evening meals—or a good-old fashioned Viking marshmallow roast.

The boxy glass superstructure provides views on all sides of the yacht, taking inspiration from Dutch architect Paul de Ruiter’s minimalist land-based projects. The use of mirrored glass helps the yacht blend into its surroundings. An open-plan observation lounge sits on the upper level, with a sundeck bar atop.

A living wall runs the entire length of the yacht’s “central core,” from the sundeck to the lower deck. “My intention was to give each area a beach vibe, so guests feel connected, even when seated in completely different ends of the structure,” says Lane. “The living wall is a visual link that ties all the levels together and connects the guests with nature, even when indoors.”

Arguably, the coolest feature is the nook in the bow of the yacht, just forward of the full-beam master suite. There are no windows other than a large skylight, forcing guests to look up into the night sky. “It struck me as a space that’s often wasted but would make the most incredible place to watch the aurora borealis,” says Lane.

In keeping with the boat’s Scandinavian theme, the beach club has a sauna, steam room and fully equipped gym. A marble-fronted plunge pool on the aft deck is backed by a cascading waterfall that spans both levels. “The sound of flowing water is to help guests relax and unwind,” says Lane. There is also a 13-foot-long pool, complete with a mirrored ceiling, sectioned off from the adjacent gym by a sliding glass door.

The designer deviated from the usual approach with the beach club: The area is located inside the vessel behind the swim platform, which remains as its own private space connected to the cockpit by flowing stairs.

The beach club, however, is accessed via an interior floating staircase. Any inconvenience that has caused was mitigated with drop-down side terraces that not only add to the hygge lifestyle to the design, but also elements of privacy. “Not many yachts this size dedicate so much interior space to the beach club, but I felt it was an important element of the wellness theme to make it feel tranquil,” says Lane.

The beach club’s larger footprint is also made possible by the yacht’s compact diesel-electric propulsion system and generators, located farther forward than typical engine configurations.

Like the Wider, Aegir’s propulsion system also includes an azimuth pod-drive system, a lithium polymer battery bank and bow thrusters, with power coming from four Rolls Royce Marine Gen Set engines. Lane also designed storage for sailing dinghies and sea kayaks, rather than a garage for jet skis or other gas-guzzling toys.

Of course, if you really want to combine sustainability and blend into the environment, Lane recommends a polar plunge in the chilly Norwegian waters.

Divers Find 5 Bodies in Superyacht Wreck, 1 Still Missing

Divers recovered the bodies of five people on Aug. 21 as they search the wreck of the superyacht Bayesian, which sank off the coast of Sicily earlier this week.

Rescue crews unloaded three body bags from rescue vessels that pulled into port at Porticello. Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, said two additional bodies had also been found in the wreckage.

Italian rescue teams have not identified the bodies or given details about their age or sex.

The 164-foot boat, owned by the wife of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, was carrying 22 passengers when it capsized during a storm half a mile from the port of Porticello, near Palermo.

Fifteen people, including a 1-year-old child, were rescued from the sea, but the boat’s chef, Ricardo Thomas, was found dead and six others were reported missing.

They included British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah.

Also missing were Jonathan Bloomer—who has chaired Morgan Stanley’s London-based international arm since 2016—his wife Judy, lawyer Chris Morvillo, and his wife.

Lynch, who was acquitted of fraud charges in June by a federal jury in San Francisco, was celebrating the end of a 13-year legal saga by hosting close friends and supporters on board the luxury sailboat, which was owned by his wife Angela Bacares.

The wreck of the Bayesian is on the seabed at a depth of 150 feet, which is deeper than most recreational divers are certified for.

Divers searching for survivors can only stay on the wreck for 12 minutes at a time.

Vincenzo Zagarola, of the Italian Coastguard, said they were presuming that the six missing tourists are dead.

Asked about the chances of them being still alive inside the hull, he said: “Never say never, but reasonably the answer should be not.

“We think they are still inside the boat, that is our very hard idea.

“Of course, we do not exclude that they are not inside the boat, but we know the boat sank quickly. We suppose that the six people missing may not have had time to get out of the boat.”

Luca Cari, a spokesman for the rescue teams, took part in the search for the cruise ship Costa Concordia, which sank off Tuscany, Italy, in 2012, with the loss of 32 lives.

Cari said, “That was much simpler. Here everything is more tight.”

Earlier experts said it was possible survivors were still alive in an air bubble, and they pointed to British sailor Tony Bullimore, who survived for four days in the upturned hull of his capsized yacht in 1997.

Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a senior lecturer in mechanical, biomedical, and design engineering at Aston University in England, said the superyacht sank so quickly that it is possible air pockets may have been created.

‘A Great, Great Tragedy’

Britain sent four investigators to the scene, given the disaster involved a British-flagged ship.

The skipper of another sailboat, Karsten Borner, told the ANSA news agency and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper that he saw the Bayesian during the storm, but when the wild weather dissipated it had gone and all he could see was a red flare in the sky.

Borner found a lifeboat carrying 15 people and took them aboard their yacht before alerting the Coast Guard.

1 killed, 6 missing as superyacht sinks off Sicilian coast, Italian officials say

A 183-foot sailboat carrying 22 people sank early on Monday off the coast of the Italian island of Sicily following stormy weather in the area, killing at least one passenger, according to Italian officials.

Members of the coast guard have rescued 15 passengers, but six -- including two Americans -- are still missing, according to the coast guard and a local port authority. British and Canadian citizens are also unaccounted for, the coast guard said in a statement.

Of those recovered, eight have been transported to local hospitals, officials said.

The U.K.-flagged vessel -- named the Bayesian -- sank off Porticello, near the coastal city of Palermo, the statement said. The ship is currently located at a depth of around 164 feet, with firefighter divers now attempting to reach it, the statement said.

One body was recovered and six people were missing, an authority from the Palermo Port Authorities told ABC News. Divers reached the hull of the ship early on Monday and were still searching the water, the official said.

A State Department spokesperson said U.S. officials "are aware of reports that U.S. citizens were on the Bayesian."

"We are working with local authorities to gather information and we stand ready to provide consular assistance," the spokesperson said.

Four coast guard vessels, one helicopter and a team of fire brigade divers are involved in the search, which is being coordinated by the Palermo coast guard, the statement said.

Fabio La Bianca, who owns the local BAIA Santa Nicolicchia restaurant, told ABC News that he noticed the moored vessel had disappeared when he went to check on storm damage to his business.

"After half an hour with the other guys we realized that it was no longer there and immediately the rescuers were going around to look for the missing, they had also launched two distress rockets in the air before," La Bianca said.

Local Mayor Giuseppe D'Agostino wrote on Facebook that the "tragedy that struck our community is unparalleled in history."

"The administration has activated all channels with the police and is taking care of the people recovered alive so far," D'Agostino said, adding that local authorities are gathering clothes and finding accommodation for the survivors.

"The search continues at sea and all we can do is pray and hope to find someone alive."
