Azimut’s pioneering use of carbon fiber lamination goes beyond pure performance. The Carbon Tech Generation offers expanded volumes onboard, while maintaining excellent dynamic stability and perfect handling. Preserving the yacht’s low center of gravity, the carbon fiber was focused on the upper parts of the yacht, lightening the laminated components by up to 30% and reducing the natural roll momentum up to 15%.

The Joystick acts as an analog for the yacht, offering intuitive, one-handed control in every situation. When the yacht is stopped, moving the Joystick forward or back, side to side, and twisting clockwise or counter-clockwise activates the engines to mimic that motion. It’s the easiest way to pull off precise maneuvers.

When Joystick Driving is activated, the autopilot is immediately engaged. For easy course correction, the driver may briefly twist the Joystick for 1 degree in that direction or twist and hold for 10 degrees. The Autopilot keeps a forward course after the Joystick is released.

With top-class competition to contend with, can the Azimut 60’s brave interior help it edge out in front of the pack?

To be in the market in the market 
for a 60ft flybridge 
 is to be presented with some of the finest craft the world’s boatbuilders have in their stables. These boats must meet a hugely demanding list of requirements and, sitting as they do on the threshold between being owner-run and managed by a skipper and crew, their layouts must be capable of catering for both scenarios.

When you are spending upwards of €1 million, it goes without saying that a certain level of space, luxury and quality are prerequisite – but wow factor is high on the agenda too. The latter is not something that Azimut struggles with; the bold Stefano Righini exteriors are instantly recognisable and possess a style and panache that set out to challenge its more conservative rivals.

This new Azimut 60 may replace the former model of the same name but it is more than a simple refresh; this boat has a brand new hull and an interior that is as bold, brave and opinion-splitting as Righini’s avant-garde exterior.

Smooth curves

That interior is designed by Achille Salvagni, one of Italy’s most celebrated interior designers, who up until this point has mainly created interiors for boats of 80ft plus.

His signature style includes curvaceous furniture and bold pastel colours teamed with darker, more muted timbers. Azimut says there are 44 separate curves throughout the interior and, though I can’t admit to having counted each and every one, I can well believe it.

Everything from the sofa bases to the tables and galley counters has a smoothly rounded edge, which is as distinctive as it is practical. How many modern interiors are peppered with sharp corners and hard edges that threaten to jab you at any moment if the boat takes a big impact out at sea? There is no such concern on the Azimut 60.

Our test boat had the light wood option, which complemented the dark wenge floorboards and the textured synthetic floor covering used in the aft section of the saloon. It’s a good choice to use in this part of the boat because it means guests can wander into the saloon with wet feet and not worry about slipping or staining the carpet.

The use of colours, materials and textures is exquisite in its thoughtfulness and there are fine details, such as the gold bases under the saloon sofas and brass spotlights over the dinette that add a sense of occasion. It won’t appeal to all tastes but whereas rivals’ interiors err on the side of safety and depend on the owner’s touches to add verve, the Azimut’s has ready-made flair and attitude all of its own.

There is a downside however, and that’s a lack of dedicated handholds. Yes, there are fewer hard edges to knock yourself against but it’s still important to be able to hang on to something as you move through the boat at sea. Currently, the backrest of the dinette naturally falls to hand and, on our test boat, was already sporting some grubby handprints thanks to its assumed role as a handhold.

Azimut has opted for an amidships galley configuration, which leaves space aft for a relaxed and welcoming lounging area, perfect for a cosy drink before bed. This puts the dinette up quite a tall step and opposite the galley, which works well in that transporting food and drinks from kitchen to table is easy.

In a bid to make the most out of the views from this raised level on the main deck, the starboard window runs from floor to ceiling and there is a cut-out in the bulwark to provide unimpeded views out over the water. Neither of these features is repeated on the port side, which may seem odd but you can only see one side of the boat at a time.

Bold design

The lower deck décor is no less ambitious. In the VIP cabin for example, the headboard is green velvet and there is a deep blue trinket box built into the surfaces either side of the bed. The reading lights are pearl-like orbs that pop out of the headboard, and gold liner peeps out from behind the hand grooves in the wardrobes.

It’s fun, almost cartoonish, but it’s functional too, like the way that you can lift the base of the bed with one hand to reveal a huge void perfect for storing empty suitcases. In fact, every bed on board lifts to reveal a lined storage area. The twin guest cabin doesn’t have an ensuite but those occupying it have use of the day heads so they needn’t share a bathroom with those in the VIP.

In the full-beam master cabin , the quirky layout is almost as interesting as Salvagni’s décor. The bed runs athwartships and is flanked by funky – and of course, curvaceous – bedside tables with large lamps seemingly hovering over them.

On the opposite side of the cabin is an oval-shaped storage unit; a signature Salvagni piece with bold, toy-chest handles disguising massively deep drawers. It dominates the space and encompasses the outlandish interior to a tee.

Life under the sun

Back on deck, things may be a little more formulaic but all three outdoor entertaining spaces have been well designed. One of my favourite spots on the boat is the aft section of the flybridge where Azimut, unlike pretty much every rival out there, fits proper fixed seating to provide a comfortable elevated lounging space ideal for private drinks raised high above a bustling Med quayside.

You can opt to have a barbecue grill in this area or simply maximise the low-slung seating for group sundowners. There’s similarly clever thinking on the foredeck. There is the usual blend of seating and sunbathing space but Azimut has worked in a clever folding backrest atop the sunpads that faces back into the boat so guests can sit opposite each other for snacks and drinks around the folding table.

It’s simple but clever, as is the signature squared-off section at the very forward end of the deck, which means the area around the anchor winch and mooring gear is wider and flatter than usual, therefore safer for crew to use, and it allows for more space in the VIP cabin.

The lower helm seats are set quite high so can be a bit tricky to clamber up into, but once in the supportive chairs, the raised position and lack of blind spots means helming from the shelter of the saloon isn’t just something you do when rain stops play on the flybridge.

There is just about enough space to stand at the lower helm too, which is useful if you’re helming at night, for example, and need to have the nav gear within easy reach. Azimut likes to keep engine options simple so the 60 can be configured with either MAN i6 800s or the pair of Volvo Penta D13-900s we had fitted to our test boat.

Performance is broadly similar but you may notice the extra 200 combined horsepower when the boat is loaded with gear and blighted by mid-season growth. The Volvos are a fine match for the boat and it sweeps without fuss to 31 knots, though it does take a bit of time to get there.

Azimut’s electro-hydraulic steering takes all of the heavy lifting out of shifting the 60 from side to side and it reacts keenly to the helmsman’s inputs for a big old brute. The steering system that Azimut uses allows for increased rudder angle at slower speeds to make for a tighter turning circle but the feel and tenacity improves as speed increases.

The steering is so light as to feel lifeless at times, but this is a small price to pay for what easy work it makes of threading the Azimut 60’s 36-tonne heft about. Our boat had the optional Xenta joystick fitted. It’s a neat enough system that combines the props and thruster to go some way towards offering the same thumb-twiddling flickability of IPS.

That said, it feels dim-witted at times and, with a hefty pair of props biting into the water and thrusters fore and aft, it seems rather unnecessary. I would save the money.

On the water, the Azimut 60 goes about its business with consummate ease, ironing out the worst that albeit benign seas off Savona could offer us. It will sit at 25 knots in comfort and no doubt prove a relaxing cruiser for longer passages, though an 86db(A) reading in the cockpit at 25 knots isn’t entirely soothing and there were a few squeaks emanating from the dash that disrupted the peace.

Our verdict

The Azimut 60’s rivals are numerous and talented. The Sunseeker Manhattan 52 may be a touch smaller but it has a Motor Boat Award to its name, keen pricing and the option of shaftdrives or IPS pods. The other Brit, the Princess 62 , is gracious and charming in a way that only Princess can make a boat, and it is absolutely vast inside. The Prestige 630 possesses a novel layout and has value for money on its side.

And let’s not ignore the Azimut’s homegrown competition either: the Absolute 58 Fly is a fantastic all-rounder, festooned with excellent detailing and possessing the finest IPS dynamics in the sector.

The Azimut 60 can’t compete with the space of the Princess, versatility of the Sunseeker or the pod-drive dynamics of the Absolute, but in the style stakes it has the others licked. That interior is a major point of difference and its charm extends far beyond the initial impressions of a quick sea trial or a tour at a boat show.

It’s a boat that feels special even if you aren’t in the mood to leave the marina thanks to the work of Achille Salvagni and Azimut’s decision to give him carte blanche. If it’s wow factor you’re after, the Azimut 60 has it in spades.

The cockpit is extremely spacious with teak throughout. The swim platform is hydraulic. There are multiple storage areas on the port and starboard sides.

The crew quarters are accessed through the bench seat as well as a transom door from the swim platform. Engine access is through a large hatch in the cockpit sole.

The battery switches are located on the starboard side as you enter the large sliding glass doors into the salon. A molded, teak staircase leads up to the bridge on the port side of the cockpit.

The flybridge is very large and seating for 10+ with a large layout area aft. There is an outdoor galley unit to port with a sink, fridge, and ice maker. There are JL speakers and subwoofers throughout the flybridge with LED lighting in the hard top. 

6 skylights also lend to a large amount of sunlight during the day. The upper helm is equipped with full Raymarine electronics, Xenta joystick, VHF, autopilot, searchlight and windlass controls. 

The salon is yet another large gathering area, the boats and L-shaped sofa to port and loveseat to starboard. There is a 46 inch flatscreen, equipped with Amazon FireTV Streaming, Blue-ray disk player and Intelllian i6 Satellite TV. The Bose Lifestyle Surround Sound system offers an elevated experience of music and TV entertainment.

The galley is U-shaped with ample storage and granite counters. The hardwood floor continues from the salon throughout the galley. She is equipped with a separate Isotherm fridge / Vitrifrigo freezer. Miele oven and 3 burner Miele cooktop and microwave below. Large double basin, stainless steel Franke sink with chrome faucet.

LOWER HELM STATION

The brown leather Treben helm set is the first thing you will notice at the lower helm station. The moves up and down and forward and back electronically. She is equipped with twin Raymarine 15-inch hybrid touchscreen plotters. Raymarine Sounder ST 60 Tridata. Separate Raymarine autopilot control. Xenta joystick.

MASTER STATEROOM

An uninterrupted view of the sea, an exclusive lounge, meticulous details that make all the difference… By day, the Boatowner’s cabin is a private haven with large, livable spaces, by night, tranquility, and relaxation reign supreme. On the starboard side is a large lounge/seating area, complemented with leather and wood table equipped with vanity and storage.  There are three storage lockers, and more storage spaces are also located in the master bath. Absolute Yachts 60 Flybridge

The new Absolute 60 Flybridge is cleverly named "The Absolute Prisma", after the geometrical, transparent shape of a prism which separates white light into a variety of colors. The colors produced seem endless in their possibilities and shades. Similarly, the 60 Fly offers endless options to enjoy the ocean in ways you never thought possible. Both the social aspects and the living accommodations have become even more versatile than before, allowing for new experiences on board. Several new design changes and innovative ideas have been incorporated into the new model which Absolute says will redefine its flybridge range.

From its exterior, there are several noticeable attributes. The salon windows are wide, high, and pillarless giving the interior guests exceptional views. There are massive windows on the lower deck, particularly in the bow where Absolute has now placed the owner's suite. Some of these salon windows can even be opened to allow in the seabreeze. Whether formally entertaining guests or cruising for a week with friends, the 60 Fly will create the ideal atmosphere.

The flybridge has excellent dimensions taking advantage of the 16' 2" beam. Aft on the bridge, there are new glazed parapets balustrades which offer an elegant look, while also creating a safer environment to move about. The terrace is spacious and fun, essentially creating an outdoor living area with views. The flybridge includes a galley, a dining area, and a lounging area, all with wonderful finishes. Forward on the bridge is the upper helm station which consists of all of the communication and navigation electronics needed to safely operate the yacht. The helm is designed to be modern and ergonomically-positioned for comfortable operation. Finally, the hardtop features solar panels on top which offer extra power while also being environmentally friendly.

The bow lounge area features multiple seating and sunbathing options, a wonderful area for guests to enjoy the sun while at anchor or a slow cruise. There is a curved sofa with pedastal table for outdoor dining or cocktails. The extra-large sunpad features a backrest near the top so that guests can face the bow pedastal table when hors d'oeuvres are served. Absolute has continued to be at the forefront of maximizing the bow area for enjoyment.

The cockpit on the 60 Flybridge is like a blank canvas waiting for your ideal configuration and desires. Designed to offer maximum versatility, there are no fixed structures on the cockpit to force you into any specific seating arrangement. Modular furniture allows you to furnish the aft cockpit as you see fit. Finally, the transom platform is wide and spacious, perfect for watersports, and has crew cabin access through a pantograph door that is hidden in the design.

The interior living and dining spaces are designed with comfort in mind, elegantly furnished, and accented with the fine materials. Salon, galley and cockpit are adjacent and connected by a continuous bow to stern design. The entire living space inside the 60 FLY is techologically advanced, comfortable, and functional at all times. All of the equipment on board is of the latest generation.

On the lower deck, you will find the owner’s stateroom waiting for you. It consists of a full-beam cabin that is incomparable to other boats in its class. You will immediately notice the large internal heights making it feel comfortable, as well as the exclusive, high-quality finishes. The owner's suite is a refined, quiet environment, dedicated to absolute comfort and privacy. Enjoy extended cruising thanks to the large walk-in closet, a sea view vanity, and large side windows to feel totally immersed in nature. The real revolution new to the 60 FLY? The owner’s suite is placed at the bow in a reserved area, mid-level, between the main and lower decks, separated, and shielded from any disturbances for the best night's sleep.

The VIP statement is nearly comparable to the master stateroom in size and comfort. The queen size berth leaves plenty of space both for storage and for living, with en-suite bathroom featuring a separate shower and elegant marble counters. The third cabin consists of two single beds, noteworthy are both the floor without steps and the ceiling height, comparable to the other cabins. A large window luminates the third cabin as well.

Azimut 60 Fly For Sale

A Rum With a View II is a 2014 Azimut 60 Fly currently listed with Yachts 360 for $929,500. The 60-footer has a three-stateroom, two-head layout that sleeps six.

Stepping onto the 60-footer’s swim platform, potential owners will notice that it’s equipped with a hydraulic swim platform capable of hauling the yacht’s RIB tender (included in the sale). Up a few steps, is A Rum With a View II’s cockpit where a bench seat, table and loose chairs sit to create a six-person alfresco dining area. Stairs to port lead to the flybridge, while the yacht’s side decks with high rails lead to the foredeck where guests can enjoy a two- to three-person sun pad.

The salon, accessed via full-width sliding glass doors, is the next entertainment area. To port is an L-shaped settee and an ottoman, and a love seat with side tables is to starboard with a flat-screen TV forward, creating a comfortable space for casual conversation. When the sliding doors are open, the cockpit and salon become an integrated entertainment space.

Forward and up two steps is the galley to port and a U-shaped dinette to starboard. The galley is equipped with a J-shaped countertop, two sinks, an electric cooktop, an oven and a dishwasher. The lower helm station is all the way forward on centerline with a single helm seat for the skipper and Raymarine multifunction displays.

The Azimut 60’s flybridge has open space aft that could be arranged with loose furniture for additional seating options. Forward and to starboard is a C-shaped settee and fixed table, creating an alfresco dining space for six guests. Directly to port is a sink, an electric cooktop, a refrigerator and an ice maker–all abaft the upper helm station. To starboard, directly across from the helm station, is a lounge pad for guests to relax and chat with the captain en route to the next waypoint. The forward three-quarters of A Rum With a View II’ s flybridge can be enclosed with soft-plastic zip-shut windows.

Belowdecks are three staterooms, which include a forepeak VIP with a centerline berth and an en suite head. Another guest stateroom is to starboard with two single berths. Amidships is the master stateroom with an en suite head and a private dining area–consisting of two bench seats with a fixed table in between.

Twin 800 hp MAN R6-800 diesels give A Rum With a View II a reported top hop of 31 to 32 knots, with a 26-to-28-knot cruise speed. Its engines currently have 1,550 hours.

Notable features include: a 20 kW Kohler generator with 1,400 hours, a 15 kW Kohler generator with 900 hours, a Xenta Joystick, a Yacht Controller, new Raymarine Axium XL Displays, AIS, new AC Compressors, new House Batteries, JL Stereo and an aft crew quarters belowdecks.

It’s also worth noting all trades are welcome, according to the yacht’s current listing.
