Hello all, I am back again, still looking at boats and need anyone and everyone thoughts or experience on the Hino engines and boat over all. Key thought also is the stringer repair under motor mount. I have put the link to the boat also. https://www.boattrader.com/boat/1989-bayliner-3888-motoryacht-9381168/ any and all info would be appreciated

Lots of great information specifically about Bayliners, and the Hino engines at the Bayliner Owners Club baylinerownersclub.org

My thought is that the Hinos caught the flack when they basically under-powered the bigger boats with them resulting in a lot of re-powers because people wanted faster boats. In this size/setup it is perfect for trawler speed expectations. See some of the typical chasing leaks at the window frames. Liked the walkout transom even more now that floating docks are becoming the norm. A good survey will render a list of issues of that type. Price seems to indicate owner has taken them into consideration One personal gripe was placing the switches on the flat portion of the lower helm. Think they should have been moved to a cabinet freeing up space for display screens.

I’ve seen this boat come up before. Its real issue is a wet stringer where the motor mount attaches. The required fix is removal of the engine. Cutting into the stringer, replacing the bad material, reglassing and reinstalling the engine. One can choose not to repair the stringer but, you run the risk of the motor mount sagging. This could cause all kinds of expensive issues.

A repair quote would seem prident. Investigate the possibility of using the pour in compound used for transoms?

Do you plan to insure the boat? It's probably a known problem to that boat and you may not be able to get insurance unless a qualified facility does the work. If it were me, I would want to find out if the owner has insurance or the insurance company has refused to cover because of the engine stringer. Ted

Is there ever a GOOD bayliner?

I've heard people say to stay away from bayliners when considering a new boat. Is there ever a GOOD bayliner? Can anyone enlighten me as to what is "bad" about them? I've heard they are cheaply made, but what does that really mean? I'm a novice when it comes to boats. prices of bayliners are certainly attractive, but want to understand better what their weaknesses are. I should probably clarify here too. I'm thinking of modern boats, something more recent than 2000. Seems the 2000 to 2004 area is priced in my range from 8k to 10k. Don't want to discount going older though for some of the higher end brands. ...and please...I'm not trying to offend any bayliner owners. just trying to get a good idea of them.

Re: Is there ever a GOOD bayliner? Sure are lots of happy Trophy owners. The thing about any economically priced product (if there is such a thing in the boating world) is that by mass-producing them, there are a LOT more owners of said product. This math alone leads to more "problems". And, there's no arguing that there are better built boats on the water, however, that can be said about ANY make. The majority of the issues, in my opinion, is a LOT of people that knew nothing about boats or boating, purchased Bayliners. Normally, that means there was no maintenance done, or at least not as much as a boat that has a more "loyal" following. Any boat, and I don't care if it's handcrafted by the Pope, will break down with no attention paid to it. You'll always "get what you pay for", regardless of who built it. I, for one, have known several Bayliner owners that loved their boat. Yes, lots of them broke down, but from a percentage standpoint of boats sold, probably not much more than any other boat built. You see more for sale because they produce a lot of "entry-priced" boats. For those that are captured by this past time, that means that it's soon time to trade (which applies to some of us, regardless of who made it). Are you looking for a new boat or a used one?

Re: Is there ever a GOOD bayliner? You will get a lot of different answers. There are some haters out there that swear that Bayliner is the worst boat ever made. Realistically, they are - like any boat - a product of their care and handling. They (the older Bayliners) are made with less desirable materials, lower quality components and what not. It's my understanding that the new(er) Bayliners 2002-present are a MUCH higher quality build and that the difference would be in the "feel" of the interior, the fit and finish etc. They simply are THE entry level boat. You get what you pay for is always true.

Re: Is there ever a GOOD bayliner? My friend has a 1987 21 ft Trophy and he loves it (great hull). It's a great fishing machine. Been going strong for 25 years. Like anything, if you take care of it....it's going to last.

Re: Is there ever a GOOD bayliner? given the state of my situation with my 87 Larson, I'm looking at jumping up to a newish/modern boat. My thought it to find a good, not too old, used one that I can maintain to my own standards and keep for a long time. I don't leave my boat in the water for more than the weekend while I'm at the lake. I don't put it in the water if the forecast it for rain since we won't be out in it anyway. When I pull it, my boat is always drained and covered to keep water/elements out. I've learned with the two boats I've had so far that maintaining them and winterizing is very important. I'm somewhat used to that with motorcycles anyway, so don't mind spending small $ to avoid big $ problems later. I'm not overly concerned with fit/finish of things, just that they are built to stand up to use. it doesn't have to be the prettiest boat on the water, but dependability is critical to me. At this point, I'm looking for something in the 8k to 10k range. I don't mind the idea of something that is late 90s, but am figuring the newer the boat the better off I'll be. I've seen some advertised that have been kept in dry dock when not used, etc. thinking those would be good alternatives as far as wood/hull is concerned. mechanical stuff I'm comfortable checking, now that I've spent 3 years learning what to look for.

Re: Is there ever a GOOD bayliner? Oh, by the way....I'm looking for a bowrider. 18 feet would be absolute minimum, but 19 or 20 would be great.

Re: Is there ever a GOOD bayliner? Bayliners quality is not related (normally) to the powerplant, as most modern boats all use the same GM engines from Volvo or Mercruiser. The Force motors and L-Drive junk is another story. It's the difference in hull thicknesses, gelcoat quality, fasteners, and deck hardware. The fit and finish will also be "budget" vinyls which is more prone to tears and rips. Lots of plastic handles and cheap hardware that breaks easily regardless of the care an owner gives to the boat in general. In addition, Bayliner will likely put an underpowered engine as the base engine for each boat model in order to meet the price point they wish to sell it at. This ends up detracting from the value/quality of a Bayliner as well. Now, that being said, Bayliners being built/sold at the lowest price point of a given market means that people with less money tend tp purchase them. Those people generally are new to boating, and aren't likely to have the knowledge about the required maintenance of a boat, and many times, the finances to keep up with that maintenance. Eventually, you end up with a high volume of Bayliners that have been run hard, beat up, and poorly maintained. All that on top of being made of lesser quality means that the boats are typically much worse for the wear after 10 years than a comprable Cobalt, Formula, Four Winns, Chapparal, etc. It doesn't mean that a Bayliner can't be a good boat, it just means there are likely to be far more examples of ragged Bayliners than there are of the pristine Bayliners.

Re: Is there ever a GOOD bayliner? I say buy what your budget allows and don't look back. I have a Tahoe which is also entry level. It has never let me down. I truely believe any boat has potential to fail from a $1000 boat to $100000 boat. Maintain it and enjoy it. The smiles on my kids faces being dragged behind the boat are every bit as big as the guy with a $80000 Cobalt and I don't feel like throwing up when I bump the dock... R

Re: Is there ever a GOOD bayliner? I wouldn't even worry what brand a boat is when looking for them used. Find the boat that has been garage kept it's whole life with owners that were sticklers for maintenance. I would take a garage kept bayliner every day of the week over a boat 5 years newer that has sat in the sun and rain with little care taken of it.

Re: Is there ever a GOOD bayliner? You may be okay in the year range you're interested in. One thing you cannot ague is that they are still in business, so they must be doing something right. However a couple decades ago they were clearly trying to be the low cost boat brand. When the outboard market was (for OMC, Merc) using oil injected motors, Bayliner was putting in old technology Force outboards they were premix and they were very undersized. It was to hit a low advertised price. Stands to reason that build quality was also suspect. Always be wary when you contemplate purchasing any item fighting to be the cheapest price. That probalby set the bad reputation that this brand has with so many folks.

Re: Is there ever a GOOD bayliner? Bayliners are entry level, budget built boats assembled and maintained by humans. as many stated, look for a boat that has been garage kept. one reason that bayliners have issues is because they are entry level and budget built. that means that many people bought them, and stored them outside....bow down...no cover....with plug in.... however if your looking in the early 2000's there are many really nice boats. my observation is the higher quality brands have a better chance of having been garage kept and properly maintained. happy hunting.

Re: Is there ever a GOOD bayliner? I had a '96 Trophy and it was one of the best boats I've ever owned. Care and maintenance are the most important thing. Stay with a well cared for newer model and you should be good. That being said, look at the math. If Brand X sells only 10,000 boats and only 1,000 have issues, that's a simple 10%. If Bayliner sells 500,000 boats and a whopping 50,000 have issues, that's 50x the number of complaints, but still only 10% of the market.

Re: Is there ever a GOOD bayliner? A friend of mine just bought an 05 245 (or maybe 249)? bowrider. He liked the cockpit depth, deckboat like layout and deep V. It has a 5.0MPI so an upgrade. Yes I notice some subpar hardware, some things I didnt care for and would turn me off however for his needs it's a beautiful boat and was worth the money. I really feel they are improved over the 90's versions.

Re: Is there ever a GOOD bayliner? As a Bayliner owner, I thank you guys for not bashing the brand, and making very valid points about the owners of entry-level boats, etc. That being said, the build quality from 1987 to maybe the early 90s was sub-par, with a particular problem with properly sealing the wood (ask me how I know this).

5 Most-Common Problems With Bayliner Boats (With Examples)

' src=

Every boat brand has its strengths and its weaknesses. It’s important to be an informed consumer when buying a boat.

This list details some of the problems that owners have reported, some straight out of the factory.

Some problems are big enough to cause an incident, some led to a recall, and others bring attention to safety concerns. The U.S. Coast Guard is responsible for keeping tabs on how safe a boat is.

Since 1976, the Coast Guard has received 14 kinds of complaints, which has resulted in 3,257 Bayliners being recalled.

Here are the main problems people have experienced with Bayliner boats:

Table of Contents

bayliner 3888 motoryacht problems

1) Generator Issues On Older Models

Some Bayliner boats in 1982 were equipped with an Onan MCCK generator.

The models of these boats are not recorded in USCG documents. According to files by the Coast Guard, there were two main issues. The first issue was with the generator starter motor.

The second issue is that the generator attached to the starter was not explosion-proof.

There was a recall initiated on February 17, 1982, and ended on March 8, 1982. This affected ten boats.

Boats made in later years do not have these problems.

2) Bayliner 2004 Model Bowrider

There were several issues identified with the 2004 Bayliner model 180s. Because of an improperly wired stereo, 63 of these boats were recalled. This issue was identified as being a potential fire hazard.

Other issues that were identified were stability issues.

This can be dangerous when used, and a stable boat is important for the safety of the boat’s passengers.

Another potential issue in the construction was the ungrounded fuel fill pipes. A fuel system that is properly grounded helps keep all of the electrical and connections more secure.

It heads off the risks of accidental static ignition and reduces the potential of an explosion.

Other engine issues were identified. One of these issues was insufficient ventilation in the engine enclosures, which could be another risk for an explosion.

Improper switches were also seen on some of the boats. In some models, the batteries were mounted too close to the fuel lines, which can cause too much heat and potentially start a fire. Some boats had a regulatory violation with removable capacity plates.

154 boats of the 1980 Bayliner Force model had a USCG Capacities Plate that could be removed by lifting the plate. On the Plate, it has specifications of the maximum number of passengers and the total weight that the vessel can carry, and the maximum horsepower with which the boat can be powered.

Removing the plate violates federal law, and it is a safety hazard.

3) Issues With Bayliner Boats

Many of the issues that Bayliners are what you’d expect from an entry-level boat.

One way to be sure that a boat that you’re buying is free and clear of any issues is to have a survey done before you purchase it.

To have an affordable boat, they had to shave corners in some aspects.

For many boat owners, this includes wiring problems or the quality of the physical boat itself.

4) Bayliner Boats Most Affected With Problems

  • By the numbers, 1,240 had fuel-filler pipes that were not grounded.
  • 457 of these boats had ventilation problems in the engine space.
  • 346 had stability problems and were not able to float level.
  • The 1977 Victoria Commander BR model had 263 boats that had instability problems.
  • Twelve of the Motoryacht 3388 model from 1988 had electrical issues in the engine room.
  • A recall was initiated on March 15, 2014, for these boats, and it was closed on August 14, 2014.
  • 477 of the 873 boats were repaired.

5) Structural Issues To Pay Attention To

There are some problems with certain types of boats.

Specifically, beneath the seams below the rub rails, there are issues with coming apart, cracking, and in general, not being sturdy or durable.

Bayliners have a reputation for not being able to take a pounding.

Boat owners take issue with the fiberglass layup. This can result in bubbles in the laminate. Other people do not like the interiors of the hull.

Early 80’s models had structural issues that many boat owners identified. They tended to fall apart when on the water or when used heavily.

This can be seen in many areas of the boat.

The windows can potentially leak. Another issue is that the railing and hardware can pop out of place, which can be a nuisance. When initially installed, they were screwed into the hull with self-tapping screws.

The engine power of these boats is lacking, and they are, in some cases, very underpowered. The exhaust from the engine is built up, and carbon monoxide can accumulate in the helm.

After use, the boat can have visible signs of damage. For example, the hull can crack.

There are also some issues about the quality of materials used in the boat. The hardware in some boats is chrome-plated zinc. When there is a slight impact on the hull of the boat, it can rattle and shake. For some people, the deck and hull joint did not seem appropriate for the ocean and is made for quieter lakes.

Other people pointed out that the wiring harness was not up to par.

In the control panel, some people noted that the switches were proprietary and cheap. Windshields in some of the boats are flimsy, thin, and poorly supported. Underneath the seat cushions, there is untreated plywood. The colors of the hull faded fast, and the overall ride quality was low.

This is mainly seen in the late 80’s Bayliner.

The quality since the late 80’s run has significantly improved.

Some people say that the hatches sag when you step on them. Another problem is that they used to come with Force motors which were not as powerful.

There were also issues with the steering in some of the boats. The boat could wander even at no-wake speeds. Many of the hardware is made out of plastic, including the latches and hinges, which translates to lower quality. A lot of the materials used in the boat are not strong and are of lower quality. The seat cushions are easily damaged by water as well.

Many people who are enthusiastic about boating consider Bayliners to be an introductory level boat.

The build quality on some of the boats is considered basic, and many consider it a beginner boat. However, Bayliners are still good boats.

Poor Resale Value

Buying a Bayliner new is, by some accounts, not a good investment.

Their value depreciates significantly because of its wide availability. Buying a Bayliner used will cost much less than buying a new one.

They are a common boat and, because of that, do not sell for higher prices. This is one thing that potential buyers will want to keep in mind as they are looking at boats to purchase.

The investment value is an important thing to think about when paying large amounts of money for a boat.

Each make and model has its own quirks and peculiarities that come with the design. The 1999 Bayliner Trophy 20′ center console has a Livewell mounted on the floor, and it will spill out over the deck.

The newer boats are of higher quality. In the ’70s and ’80s, Bayliners had a reputation for making lower-quality boats. This is reflected in the recalls that were in this time period.

The smaller, runabout Bayliners have more problems. The more inexpensive cruisers are not as bad as some of the other kinds.

In general, it’s advised to look out for small motors.

Before you invest in a boat (new or used!) you should pay attention to the boat depreciation guide we’ve made .

Labor Practices

Some of the boats are built in Mexico.

The factories were relocated from the United States for cheaper labor. While properly trained people in factories can produce similar quality goods, some boat owners take issue with the fact that the labor is being outsourced.

Bayliner was among the first in the ’80s to the mass market and mass-produce boat, motor, and trailer packages.

Every production boat has its problems, and Bayliners are no exception.

Many makes and models of the boats are in good condition and are well kept. It depends on how much you’re willing to take care of the boat and what you invest in it .

The newer boats are an improvement on the older ones, but keep in mind that an investment in a newer Bayliner might not necessarily pay off in the long run.

and have started our search for our first of this size. We are looking at the 35-40ft range and the Bayliner 3888 series/diesels has us intrigued.
My question to you all is are there any other manufactures that you would suggest we look at for something like this that may be a better choice for one reason or another..layout, quality, handling etc..?
Another words...looking for any and all opinions to help us make an informed decision.
Thanks for your time.. Cheers

My question to you all is are there any other manufactures that you would suggest we look at for something like this that may be a better choice for one reason or another..layout, quality, handling etc..?
Another words...looking for any and all opinions to help us make an informed decision.
Thanks for your time.. Cheers

powered boat right? that leaves out the trawlers. If you can find a well maintained/restored Tolly... they are legendary. There are some pristeen examples out there. Bayliner in general sometimes gets a bad rep... but one smaller one I had was 3/8" thick glass on the dashboard! (built 80's)
For someone who doesn't want to be a , newer is better I think. Anything over 8 years old or so, treat the fuel as suspect until proven innocent! - Elmore Leonard

manufacturer's nominal predictions at whatever RPMs you drive it. For example, ours nominally burn 1.9 GPH at 1000 RPMs, and 13 GPH at 2200 RPMs. You get whatever speed you get. (In ours, that's approx. 7.5 kts at 1000, and approx. 20.5 at 2200.) In this method, the boat itself is slightly unimportant. OTOH, it's only an approximation.

Review of Bayliner 3888 Motoryacht

Basic specs..

Both the hull and the deck is made of hand laid fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of hand laid fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. The hull is a double hull which improves the indoor climate. Especially when the water is colder than the air in the cabin, then the double hull insulates against cold water and reduce the condense water in the cabin. The deck is a double deck which improves the indoor climate.

The interior is like most other boats made of teak. Teak has the advantage of being naturally very oily and therefore water-repellent, which is suitable on boats. The boat is equipped with 2 cabins, 5 berths, a galley, 303.0 liter fresh water capacity, toilet facility and 102.0 liter waste water capacity.

The boat is typically equipped with dual inboard diesel engines at 350 hp (260 kW). Max speed is 26.0 knots.

The transmission is a shaft drive. A shaft drive will in the long run require less maintenance than other types of drive e.g. a sail drive.

The fuel tank, which is made of stainless steel, has a capacity of 1150.0 liters (303 US gallons, 252 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Bayliner 3888 Motoryacht is about 318 kg/cm, alternatively 1784 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 318 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1784 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

06-20-2011 08:19 PM. Bayliner 3888 - hull. Hi I am interested in a Bayliner 3888 1989. It has been renovated, interior exterior, in 2005-2006. The owner invested 40K in it. My concern is the hull. He told me that the hull/deck joint is screwed instead of bolted. I read an article saying it must be bolted and it is more solid than screwed.

  7. Is there ever a GOOD bayliner?

Stay with a well cared for newer model and you should be good. That being said, look at the math. If Brand X sells only 10,000 boats and only 1,000 have issues, that's a simple 10%. If Bayliner sells 500,000 boats and a whopping 50,000 have issues, that's 50x the number of complaints, but still only 10% of the market. G.

02-14-2022, 09:31 AM. It could be as simple as your power wire to the switch has made an "unscheduled departure". AKA, the center wire came off. You should be able to wiggle the switch out of the panel by wiggling it while pushing from the aft side. You won't have a lot of slack in the wires, but enough to do the job.
