The 10 Best Explorer Yachts for High-Seas Adventures

A 350-foot gigayacht or 60-foot cruiser size isn't what defines an explorer yacht. the devil's in the details when it comes to authenticity., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

Damen SeaXplorer Superyacht

Unlike fashion trends that seem to move as fast as a Redbull F1 car, the yachting industry takes its time adopting new ideas. There seems to be one exception. Explorer vessels, born out of the owners’ desires to go farther and stay longer, without sacrificing creature comforts, is developing with some urgency.

Several dozen builders and designers are now focusing on explorers, but they are also consulting with adventure travel firms that have a long history of using expedition yachts in remote parts of the globe. ICON Yachts, for example, collaborated with Cookson Adventures and the International Seakeepers Society on its Project Mission in both the overarching design and the details found across the yacht. Adventure outfitter EYOS employs its expertise routinely with Damen’s explorer vessels, most recently with the 190-foot Pink Shadow.   EYOS has a list of 50 features that separate authentic explorers from faux versions that might look the part but lack the necessary infrastructure and design elements.

Long-range cruising, system redundancy for autonomy at sea, and storage to carry specialist equipment like submersibles are some of the requirements that define expedition boats. There’s also deck configuration for the easy launch of tenders and toys, along with strong, ice-class hulls and climate-controlled areas comfort in extreme polar and tropic regions.

We culled through the latest fleet of explorers with multiple lengths and designs, selecting a single feature that we think makes it best in class. Here are 10 of our favorites.

Best Pilothouse: Doggersbank 77 Offshore

classic explorer yachts

More than 700 Doggersbank motoryachts have been built since the 1960s, with the latest model scheduled for delivery in 2025. The robust, offshore vessels are designed by Dutch studio Vripack for long ocean passages, assisted by a high, flared bow. “It prevents green water from hitting the wheelhouse windows in rough seas, and together with the Portuguese bridge, ensures the captain’s view is not obstructed,” Joost Mertens, Doggersbank fleet manager, told Robb Report . “The yacht’s steel hull ensures the yacht sits better in the water making it less vulnerable to wind and high waves.”

Best Deck Configuration: Columbus Crossover 42

classic explorer yachts

The Columbus Crossover 42 is defined by both straight and angled surfaces,  tapered stern sections and a concentration of volume in the bow that is becoming on many explorers. What is atypical is the yacht’s compact but flexible dimensions that accommodate a large cockpit tender and a 108-square-foot swimming pool with relaxation areas. Sold to an U.S. customer, it’s scheduled for delivery in 2025.

Best Multipurpose Stern: Bering B165

classic explorer yachts

Turkish boatbuilder Bering Yachts revealed details of its new 162-foot flagship explorer yacht, the B165 , at the Dubai International Boat Show in March. The yacht can carry 18,400 gallons of fuel, which the builder says will give it a 4,000 nautical mile range when cruising at 12 knots. It also has a 2,640-gallon holding tank. What singles the B165 out among other explorers, however, is its multi-purpose stern area for both function and form. The elongated aft deck has a swimming pool surrounded by sunbeds. When the bulwarks are folded down, the space becomes an even larger overwater terrace. When the pool is not in use, it can be used as a covered storage area for water toys and expedition equipment. The yacht’s two tenders are also stored on the aft, making it a flexible space for both equipment and guests.

Best Family-Friendly Concept: Project Mimer

classic explorer yachts

This 197-foot expedition concept by Tillberg Design of Sweden caters to family travel with a helicopter pad as well as multiple tenders and toys. It’s pitched by the studio as an introduction to true explorer yachting. It has a functional crew layout for efficient operations and an upper deck owner’s suite with a forward terrace and spa pool. With a hull that will be built to the Polar Code Category, the concept also has an optional helipad aft and long list of toys, from an electric luxury tender and two expedition RIBS to quad bikes, a submersible, Jet Skis, and, of course, an amphibious vehicle. The five-decked yacht sleeps 12 guests with crew quarters for 17 and an additional staff member, such as a nanny.

Best Ice Explorer: Damen SeaXplorer 105

classic explorer yachts

Damen’s 345-foot SeaXplorer 105 is the largest model in the SeaXplorer range, with exterior design by Azure Yacht Design. The platform was developed under the guidance of expedition specialists EYOS Expeditions, who considered over 150 design criteria, from the hull form and bridge layout to the tender davits and Zodiac boarding arrangements. But it is EYOS’s expertise in the polar regions—it facilitated the first heli-ski charter in Antarctica and the first 3,200-foot sub dive to the Antarctic midnight zone—that gives the vessel its point of difference. The SeaXplorer has an ice-strengthened hull and a specially shaped icebreaking stern to maneuver through rough terrain.

Best Interior: Project Fox

classic explorer yachts

On top of having a cool name, Project Fox has a bright, contemporary interior, courtesy of London’s Q Design, that is becoming more common on expedition yachts. The full-beam owner’s stateroom is also one of the yacht’s standout features, with its marble en suite and hardwood floors. The salon is also luxe, with white walls that brighten up travel even in areas that are sunlight deprived. Project Fox also has four other staterooms.

Best Autonomy: Project Master

classic explorer yachts

ICON Yachts’s Project Master was a transoceanic offshore support vessel before the Dutch shipyard began a refit to turn it into an explorer yacht (see before and after inset). It’s equipped with diesel-electric hybrid propulsion, a wide beam for multiple tender spaces, a 7,200-nautical mile range, and flexible cabin arrangements for expedition crew. Other features include a science lab and a certified heli-deck. “The yacht’s helicopter and sub capability mean it can offer assistance in areas with challenging access and little infrastructure,” Micca Ferrero, owner of ICON Yachts, told Robb Report . “The design is for the demands of self-sufficient voyages.”

Best Use of Volume: Arcadia Yachts A96

classic explorer yachts

The A96 mixes the lines, volume, and open-plan layout of Arcadia’s Sherpa series with the speed, joystick maneuverability, and quality of the yard’s A range. It’s the first Arcadia to have an Igor Lobanov-designed interior, as well as a high bow and high deckheads for traversing rough water. But its big differentiator is the 214 gross tonnes of volume and 24-foot beam that generate big volumes—4,300 square feet of usable space, which is 30 percent more than on other similar-sized yachts. Low bulwarks and lateral walkways emphasize the sense of openness.

Best Bow: Project Shackleton

classic explorer yachts

This 351-foot build from Lürssen has an inverted bow that looks like an eagle’s beak. The shape is designed to slice through waves with much lower vibration through the hull, while also reducing rock and roll in rough seas. Unlike the quasi-research vessel exteriors of many explorers, this vessel is representative of the changing look of many in this growing segment.

Best Multi-Mode Hull: Azimut Magellano 60

classic explorer yachts

The Magellano 60 isn’t technically an explorer yacht. Think of it as a cruiser  designed for some long-distance travel. But it does have one very interesting feature, what its builder Azimut calls a “dual-mode” hull. The semi-planing shape is designed to optimize fuel consumption (and therefore lower emissions) by about 20 percent (compared to similar-sized vessels) at low and medium speeds. The yacht’s bow is also designed to cut through waves for better seakeeping at a range of speeds. The boat cruises very efficiently at 18 knots but will hit a top end of 26, thus delivering the performance of a planing hull with the benefits of a displacement hull.

Classic Explorer – 160′ Motor Yacht

classic explorer yachts

A large Classic Explorer Motor Yacht

This new 49m Classic Explorer motor yacht concept has been proudly unveiled by Rhoades Young Design. As with motor yacht Bystander , a previous Rhoades Young Design period-1920’s inspired yacht launched in 2006, the 49m Rhoades Young Explorer superyacht concept has been developed with meticulous attention to detail, combining the latest technology with unparalleled luxury. It takes inspiration from the heritage and legacy of classic workboats.

With a highly efficient sea-going hull this beautiful yacht is perfect for global adventures. Her strong and purposeful forward superstructure creates huge social areas aft, with space for two tenders up to 9 metres long. The luxurious guest area houses accommodation for up to 12 guests, whilst capacity for 12 crew members can be found on the lower deck.

The centrepiece of the guest accommodation aboard the 49m Rhoades Young superyacht concept is the feature quadruple-height staircase that punctuates the centre of the yacht. Lit from above through the exterior ‘funnel’, the staircase begins at the Bridge Deck which features a generous navigation area for planning the day’s adventures, whilst seclusion can be found on the spacious aft deck, perfect for a quiet moment reading a book on a steamer chair.

Leading down to the Upper Deck, this level is dominated by the spacious Owners Suite with a 180-degree view out, private study and enormous private deck featuring an inside / outside saloon, separated by large glass sliding doors which flood the saloon with natural light.

On the Main Deck there is a generous entrance foyer that leads to the large saloon and dining area, with aft doors leading onto a huge social deck that hides the large toy storage beneath. The VIP Suite also on this level has a central connecting lobby with a private convertible study and his and hers bathrooms. The large galley on this deck connects through to the pantry above via a dumbwaiter and keeps the crew circulation completely separate from the guests if required.

Luxury Expedition Yacht Charters with Explorer Superyachts

Here are the explorer or expedition superyachts currently available for luxury yacht charters worldwide. In addition, please see below for an interesting sample selection of currently available expedition and explorer motor yachts.

Explorer Yachts

Luxury expedition, or explorer yachts, offer superyacht owners the ultimate in self sufficient world exploration together with sophisticated and comfortable accommodations. Luxury yachts provide fantastic freedom and flexibility to move about in comfort while exploring the vast and beautiful waterways of the world. Explorer yachts are becoming ever more popular and there are many yachts for sale.

Expedition yachts, by their very nature, are inevitably powerful and rugged superyachts on the outside, so they can get the job done safely and efficiently. Nevertheless, their interiors are usually opulent, stylish and refined. Luxury expedition yachts can provide unsurpassed luxury and comfort. They come fully equipped with amenities as electronic entertainment, Spa Pool pools, an array of tenders and other sporting craft, lavish owner suits and abundant living spaces inside and out.

Self-sufficient adventure is perhaps the greatest appeal of the luxury exploration boat. When considering rising diesel gas prices expedition yachts are ideal for those seeking adventure in luxury and comfort. Built for safety, endurance and performance luxury expedition yachts are designed to give the ideal combination of comfort and adventure. What more could you want in your yacht?

Remote and ‘unexplored’ cruising destinations with bountiful natural ecologies are beckoning the adventurous amongst us who want to see first hand what may some day be lost. A tough new breed of remote exploration capable luxury yachts has emerged in recent years. These luxury expedition yachts are ideal for exactly this type of offshore adventure.

The key features and benefits of expedition or explorer yachts:

They get you where you want to go:

Whether your dream is to find the best fishing and diving in the world, meander your way through jungle rivers or encounter whales and penguins in the Arctic, luxury expedition yachts have the range, safety and reliability to comfortably explore every corner of our world. Because of their fuel efficiency, their range for world cruising is unrivaled, enabling you to explore remote exotic areas of the globe unreachable by any other means.

By their type and design explorer yachts are high volume with plenty of space. This makes them comfortable to live aboard during extend exploration cruising. Typically, both guest and crew accommodation is larger and more spacious. Essentially these yachts are designed and built (or rebuilt) with extended cruising specifically in mind, so living space and comfort is a distinct consideration. It is not unusual for an explorer yacht to have an owner’s suite, as opposed to merely a stateroom. A suite will essentially include a private area of the yacht and will not only house the master cabin, but will also commonly include an office area and even a private owner’s saloon or sitting area, and can also include a private owner’s deck. Such separation and spaciousness becomes more indispensable on longer voyages.

Explorer yachts, especially luxury ones, are comfortable because they offer more space. They are also more stable in adverse conditions. At the same time they often have the same interior luxuries and stylish décor as a traditional superyacht as well as great deck space and Spa Pool pool etc.

Extra Equipment & Toys

Larger hull volume corresponds to more space to store specialised equipment and water toys. Many expedition yachts are customised by their owners depending on the owner’s interests and hobbies. A keen fisherman will commonly install a large specialised hard sided tender to embark on side-excursion fishing voyages. These can be over 30 ft in length and be craned up onto the mother ship’s deck.

Some owners enjoy marine ecology and their yachts boast a comprehensive array of dive compressors and equipment, as well as small submersible submarines. Those who enjoy flying may install a heli pad so that they can explore the ocean and coastlines from the air.

It is not unknown for expedition yachts to have a huge array of toys and gadgets onboard for terrain exploration or sailing yachts for a spot of racing between guests. As with traditional luxury superyachts, explorer yachts will normally house all the usual water toys, from towable toys, to snorkeling gear, to jet skis.

Explorer yachts are typically built strong and are designed to be stable in large offshore seas. Deep displacement hulls mean these boats are more stable. This is the case whether they have been designed and built with exploration in mind, or whether the yacht has been converted from a commercial vessel. When the later is the case the type of commercial vessel used is often a deep sea ocean going workhorse, such a survey ship, tug or even deep sea trawlers.

An eploroer yacht is safer and more stable in ocean conditions and sometimes a explore yacht is an ice breaker with a reinforced hull. It is not unusual for an explorer yacht to have commercial grade safety equipment, fire system, as well as heli touch pad for emergencies and supplies and reinforced windows on the bridge.

Fuel efficiency

Because explorer yachts are designed to be long range cruisers, fuel efficiency has usually been taken into account. A displacement hull also means these boats are much more fuel efficient as smaller engines are required. Less horsepower equates to less fuel consumption. An expedition yacht will cruise at hull speed and often have specialised propellers, stabalisers, engines and hull shapes for optimum efficiency.

For instance, this yacht can cruise at 10 knots using just over 100 liters per hour. This yacht which is of a similar length (yet far smaller volume) by contrast can use up to 10 times the amount jetting between coastal anchorages.

Just as these yachts offer fuel efficiency, they also typically enable long range cruising. Efficiency means more miles between refueling but explorer yachts have a long range also because tend to have larger tanks. As well as giving the yacht a longer range between refueling this also means yachts can stock up on duty free fuel more easily and also cruise areas without reliable refueling ports.

On average these fuel efficient boats have between a 4,000-6,000+ nautical mile range. Hoverer, some larger yachts can sail from the Bering Straight to rounding Cape Horn in one go - 13,000 nautical miles at 11 knots without having to re-fuel.

Reduced maintenance – increased use

Robust steel hulls and often aluminum superstructures of expedition yachts can mean there is less maintenance necessary. There is a minimum of teak to varnish or fiberglass for the crew polish. This gives you more time to enjoy your adventure and the crew more time to ensure you do.

Built for Adventure: Everything You Need to Know About Today’s Explorer Yachts

What is an expedition or explorer yacht .

Most yachts are designed to cruise inland and coastal waterways but in reality, very few are built to voyage the world’s oceans. It is only these bluewater vessels, known as explorer or expedition yachts, that can take you on adventures to the most remote, spectacular, and pristine corners of the globe.

A few decades back, these long-range motoryachts were called “ trawlers ” after the commercial fishing trawlers they often resembled, topped by enclosed pilothouses that frequently featured reverse-slanted, “ North Sea ” windshields. But over the years, the trawler yacht category became crowded with “wannabe” boats that only looked like their rugged offshore counterparts. In reality, many of them were unable to venture very far from the coast.

Enter the true explorer yacht – a vessel that is purpose-built to be seaworthy and self-sufficient enough to serve as a luxury platform for oceangoing expeditions that are virtually without limits.

classic explorer yachts

“ The whole idea of an expedition yacht is how the owner intends to use his or her boat. We are working on the first Cheoy Lee 107 Explorer project now. It’s a boat capable of going practically anywhere in the world ,” said Jon Overing of Overing Yacht Design , the naval architect who collaborated with Cheoy Lee Yachts on its new Explorer Series .

“ The whole idea of an expedition yacht is how the owner intends to use his or her boat. We are working on the first Cheoy Lee 107 Explorer project now. It’s a boat capable of going practically anywhere in the world ”

What gives an expedition yacht “go-anywhere” capability?

It’s not just one single aspect of the vessel’s design, construction, or outfitting. With the world’s best explorer yachts, it’s the entire package.

“ I think any viable explorer yacht has be based on a full-displacement hull. That type of hull makes a better sea boat than a semi-displacement or planing hull … Full displacement hulls also inherently have more volume, and you need more volume to fit the mission profile for an expedition yacht. ”

Rugged and reliable:

What to look for in explorer yacht design and construction, full-displacement hull.

classic explorer yachts

Sufficient speed

Historically, full-displacement vessels tended to be slow through the water, making up in seaworthiness what they lacked in speed. “ The image in everyone’s mind was a 10-knot boat, but it doesn’t have to be that way ,” Overing said. Today’s full-displacement hull designs, notably our fast-displacement hullform that Overing has developed for the Cheoy Lee Explorer Series .  Overing’s fast-displacement hull combines superior seakeeping, optimum range and efficiency at 9 to 10 knots with the capability of running over 14 knots if needed to avoid a storm or make up time in a tight itinerary. With a speed/length ratio of 1.6 – 1.7, the Overing fast-displacement hulls are capable of well exceeding theoretical hull speed allowing higher speeds if the owner chooses the higher horsepower options.

Seaworthiness

Practical profile.

Take the Cheoy Lee Explorer Series , for example. These multi-deck yachts sport graceful superstructures that are skillfully wrought in aluminum by Cheoy Lee Shipyard artisans . They feature spacious on-deck gathering areas, including flybridge, bridge and lower aft deck lounges, designed for sunbathing, dining and entertaining. They even boast aft beach clubs that are ideal for launching myriad watersports adventures.

“The exterior styling of an explorer yacht doesn’t have to look like a tugboat. It can be modern, classic, traditional – however you want,”

At the same time, however, expedition yacht design should address the long, rough passages the yacht will frequently face. Typically, these yachts have high bulwarks, full pilothouses and Portuguese bridges designed to protect the yacht from seas breaking on deck. The new Cheoy Lee Explorer 132 , which features an aft-pilothouse design is an excellent example of form following function while still displaying an eye-catching profile.

High-tech construction.

classic explorer yachts

Classification.

“ It’s another system of checks and balances you are bringing into the project. I view it as an insurance policy for the owner ,” Overing said, adding, “ If you are building a good boat to begin with, there’s not a lot of cost difference in building it to class. ” Cheoy Lee Explorer Yachts are available built to Lloyd’s ✠ 100A1 SSC Yacht Mono G6 classification.

Tenders & toys., have it your way:, building a new explorer yacht.

There are pre-owned expedition yachts on the market today that come in all makes, models, sizes, vintages, and levels of bluewater capability. An owner who elects to purchase a brokerage boat is best advised to develop a mission profile for his or her desired vessel in advance and then choose the boat that ticks off the most boxes on that list. How far do you want to go? How many guests do you want to bring with you? It’s important to determine all your desires and needs before you start shopping for a yacht.

Explorer Yacht Dorothea III Winer Voyager Awards 2020

“ It’s always a compromise with a pre-owned explorer yacht. It’s someone else’s design for another owner ,” said Panu Virtanen, vice president – sales, Cheoy Lee Shipyard North America. He added, “ Who built it and how was it built? Does it have maintenance issues? It’s important to find out. ”

Use a surveyor with a proven track record to determine whether there are any hidden problems with the pre-owned yacht. And if you decide to go ahead with the purchase, many brokers recommend keeping a budget in reserve to refit the vessel. You may need to update the electronics and stabilizers, and you probably will want to change at least some of the furnishings and the soft goods. The yacht also may need its classification certificate renewed. “ That can be an expensive process ,” Virtanen cautioned.

Building a new explorer yacht with a reputable shipyard, on the other hand, will ensure you get the vessel that fulfills your individual dreams for global exploration. “ You can get exactly what you want ,” he said.

The shipyard can help you to put together a team dedicated to designing the best expedition boat for your mission profile, including members of the shipyard’s management, design and engineering teams, the yacht’s naval architect and interior designer, along with your captain, yacht broker, and yacht management company, if you so desire. This “ dream team ” will be dedicated to creating an explorer yacht that is unique to you.

“There is no ‘perfect boat’, but when you build one, you can come extremely close to getting the explorer yacht that is perfect for you”

Do you want a main-deck master suite with panoramic views so you can see spectacular scenery you when you wake up each morning? Do you want to be able to cook breakfast for your family yourself in an eat-in galley on a sunny Sunday morning? Would you like to be able to soak in a Jacuzzi on the flybridge, watch a film on the foredeck, or fish from the aft deck? Or do you fancy a beach club where you can lounge virtually at eye level with the sea, hop onto a Jet Ski whenever the mood strikes you, and enjoy a cocktail while your yacht’s underwater lights attract an “ aquarium ” full of exotic fish? “ There is no ‘perfect boat ’, but when you build one, you can come extremely close to getting the explorer yacht that is perfect for you ,” Virtanen said.

Who builds the best explorer yachts?

If you plan to build a new explorer yacht, it’s important to consider working with a shipyard that has a commercial shipbuilding pedigree in addition to a proven reputation for launching high-quality luxury yachts. Longevity, integrity, and family are key factors behind a successful shipyard. Few shipyards around the globe can boast more than 150 years of experience under continuous operation by the same family, like Cheoy Lee.

“ Cheoy Lee Shipyard has 150 years of experience in building commercial vessels that operate 24/7 in demanding conditions. That is the philosophy of the commercial side of the company, and it carries over to all the explorer yachts that we build as well. ”

It’s also important to research other expedition yachts the shipyard has launched in the past. Have they won awards and voyaged 200,000 nautical miles through most of the world’s oceans in a decade, like the 146’7” Cheoy Lee expedition yacht Dorothea III ?

“If you plan to voyage far, you need to be able to rely on your yacht in any conditions anywhere in the world. That experience is what you look for in a shipyard when you are building a true expedition yacht.”

Selene 49 Classic

The flagship of the « small selenes », a very efficient hull.

The Selene 49 is the next generation evolution of the very popular Selene 47. It features the Deep-Hull™ design and Cruiser Stern™ which improves headroom in the engine room and lazarette and makes the hull even more efficient than its predecessor. The Selene 49 has a very traditional « salty » look from the outside. Another significant difference is a wider flybridge giving space for entertaining friends and family with style in the open air, with ample room on the aft deck for a dinghy and hydraulic crane. The flybridge layout with a canvas cover or a hard-top includes an L-shaped settee and table and a bar with sink and BBQ. The hull itself is deeper than the Selene 47 and is meant to carve through the water. The longer LOA of the Selene 49 translates to an 8” increase in the cockpit and 4” more in the salon. The living space is large and spacious for the long cruising days. The salon is luxuriously finished in teak. Past the L-shaped dinette for four to port, the U-shaped galley forward has granite countertops and modern appliances, including a full-size refrigerator with freezer. The two or three-stateroom accommodations down below are spacious, due to the full hull sections forward. The master stateroom has a queen-size island berth with teak and holly steps on both sides, plus two large cedar-lined hanging lockers.

2,000 NM RANGE

Headroom for the engine room has increased by a whole foot and the John Deere 6068AFM85 230HP@2300RPM engine is standard. The Selene 49 is an excellent long range cruising boat with a D/L ratio at full load of 316, and A/B ratio at full load of 2.54. At 1,800 rpm, the Selene 49 has a cruising speed of 8.5 knots for a range of 2,000 nautical miles. The 49 also boasts an integral swim platform with a telescopic swim ladder, and beneath the 18″ hull extension Cruiser Stern™ there is extra room in the lazarette for storing gear and supplies, and at the same time greater buoyancy to offset the weight of the larger flybridge. As the flagship of the smaller Selenes, the Selene 49 boasts a level of luxury normally only found on its larger sisters in the range, but all in an affordable package that’s easy to handle as a couple.

John and Tracey are residents of Nevada and have called Las Vegas home for well over 25 years. Between the two of them, they have three boys and  four grand-kids. They take one day at a time and focus on traveling at their own pace. Pairadice is a Selene 47 Ocean trawler. They acquired her in May 2015. The Selene 47 Ocean Yacht is now replaced by the Selene 49 Ocean Yacht, a very popular model frequently operated by couples. Selene 49, hull #42 will be launched in a few days at the shipyard. Articles First Look: Art Shipyard’s Newly Launched 35m Explorer, BEE YACHT

Launched on 13 August 2024, meet the brand-new BEE YACHT. Combining sophisticated Italian design with robust Turkish construction, this compact explorer yacht promises luxury outdoor living and impressive off-the-beaten-path capabilities.

Featuring insights from the yacht design company Hydro Tec, and interior designer Michele Dragoni, below we delve into what makes BEE YACHT stand out from the crowd.

A Brief Introduction

ART Shipyard, the latest venture of the Besiktas Group, brings a rich heritage and a new level of excellence to the luxury yachting industry. Located in the easily accessible Tuzla Bay, the traditional ship building hub of Turkey, they present international clients a premium experience with competitive pricing, timely delivery, and quality construction to match renowned Italian shipyards.

While new to the luxury yachting scene, ART Shipyard is backed by a legacy of constructing high-quality vessels. With a strong background in building commercial ships, and recently transitioning into the refit sector (becoming the largest commercial refit yard in Europe and the eighth globally), they have now made yet another bold step. Leveraging their extensive facilities and expertise, ART Shipyard is now set to make a significant impact with its first fully-fledged superyacht, an exquisite 35 metre explorer named BEE YACHT.

Designed for sustained and comfortable cruising, BEE YACHT combines robust steel and aluminium construction with sophisticated and contemporary interiors, promising an exceptional yachting experience. Completing the build of BEE YACHT at their facility in Tuzla, she was recently launched and presented as a ready-to-go new-build yacht.

Touted as a pocket-sized explorer, Hydro Tec, a name synonymous with the design of explorer yachts in this size category, designed BEE YACHT with long range cruising and functionality in mind. Thus, her full displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure, carefully crafted to stay under 300 GT, deliver a decidedly robust and comfortable platform.

Exterior Design

Main deck aft: unobstructed views and flexible furniture.

The exterior design of BEE YACHT surrounds her Owner with the emotions of walking around a homely interior without any obstructions, as can be seen on the main deck aft which features an eye-catching infinity pool looking out to sea and a 40-square-metre multi-functional area leading to the main salon.

This area is designed with angular surfaces to represent the overall aesthetic of the yacht. While stylish, the exterior furniture is mostly loose to accomplish flexibility for the Owner’s needs, allowing for different uses and atmospheres throughout the day.

BEE YACHT main deck aft with swimming pool

The beach deck promises a spacious area for sunbathing close to the water with friends and family, while the lazarette allows her Owner to carry water toys and diving equipment for endless entertainment. The infinity pool on the aft deck allows a joyful onboard experience even while the boat is cruising, and at night, invites you to relax under the stars.

The upper deck is designed to host 14 guests with a large dining table, offering a generous sea view. The lounge area provides a silent and private space to relax and enjoy the yacht’s surroundings. The space also discreetly houses the main crane for tender launching, freeing up the deck for dining and entertaining. Forward and one level below, the fore deck is equipped with sofas for sunbathing.

The sun deck is perfect for hosting parties with friends. Enjoy cocktails at the fully equipped bar while lounging on luxurious sofas under sun awnings. The main fixed furniture is positioned forward, with a large bar, dining area, and forward-facing seats all below the protection of the hard top.

In Conversation With Naval Architect Sergio Cutolo

Sergio Cutolo, President and Founder of Hydro Tec, is a well-known personality and thought leader in the yachting industry with over 40 years of experience in design and naval engineering. Hydro Tec, recognised for its holistic design approach, seamlessly integrates engineering and design, evidenced in their collaboration with ART Shipyard to create BEE YACHT.

Below are insights from a conversation with Sergio, where he shares the design process and unique aspects of the BEE YACHT project after ART Shipyard CEO Hüseyin Yardimci approached him regarding the design for this venture.

Why 35 metres specifically?

“When Hüseyin first approached me, we initially started with a 24-25 metre design, but eventually decided to up the size to 35 while remaining on the 300 GT threshold,” Sergio explains. “This decision simplified construction compared to larger yachts, while also ensuring the yacht remained practical and efficient. It was a smart move for the yard, providing a bigger market, simplifying the build process, and making space for additional features.”

What were the key design and construction considerations?

“Our goal was to create a Mediterranean-friendly explorer yacht with ample open spaces,” says Sergio. “Smaller explorers can often lack expansive exterior decks, but with BEE YACHT the large sundeck and transom area with a pool is central to this. The main deck offers a ‘real beach club’ experience, with a hobby area at the bathing platform and Lazarette below for storing equipment like diving gear or surfboards. This approach provides perfect communication with the water, creating a truly unique and enjoyable outdoor space.”

What makes bee yacht unique?

“Balancing space and features were central. We decided on a 7.7-meter beam, (20 cm wider than similar sized explorers I have previously designed). This allowed for both enhanced stability and a lot more exterior space, ideal for Mediterranean cruising,” notes Sergio. “Hüseyin was intent on producing a top-quality yacht, insisting on matching Italian standards and in many areas surpassing them. As a result, BEE YACHT was built with no compromise concerning quality, with the shipyard following our specifications, including the wider beam, to the tee.”

Does the wide beam affect efficiency?

“The wider 7.7-meter beam provides excellent hull volume and greater fuel storage, extending the range to over 4,000 nautical miles cruising at 10 knots” Sergio explains. “Our CFD analysis showed minimal efficiency loss with the wider beam, while the extra fuel capacity is advantageous for long-range cruising and refuelling at more economical locations, making it perfect for Mediterranean routes where fuel prices can vary significantly from country to country.”

What does art shipyard bring to the table?

“ART Shipyard’s background as a large, stable company ensures ongoing support and top-quality refitting and maintenance services,” Sergio says. “Despite starting the project during the pandemic and facing supply chain issues, their commitment to completing the project remained strong. This yacht opens new opportunities for ART Shipyard, backed by their extensive experience and stability. Buying a boat from them comes with the security of a successful, stable, and experienced company and a shipyard where you can take the boat anytime in the future for top-quality refitting and maintenance.”

Interior Design

BEE YACHT main salon

Michele Dragoni of Dragoni Design Lab has been working as a Chief Yacht Designer for more than 16 years with his portfolio extending to some of the largest Italian shipyards. Most recently, he has given life to the interior of BEE YACHT and portrays his inspiration for this project as “trendy, modern, comfortable and open to the landscape, offering general feeling clear, light and elegant characteristics throughout”. Below Michele presents exactly what to expect from BEE YACHT’s interiors.

Michele Dragoni On His Design Inspiration

BEE YACHT 35m explorer could be described as a double-faced yacht. The explorer side is strong, and the general feeling instils safety and protection. The luxury yacht side is trendy, modern, comfortable, and open to the landscape.

The interior design reflects these exterior feelings. Some typical explorer design elements became part of the interior design too, for example the shape of the vertical windows are mentioned in the interior by a rectangular rounded shape that is visible in several different details all around the cabins.

Natural light is the focus of the interior design, for this reason all the reflecting materials are located next to the windows to empower the natural light throughout the interior. This is in contrast to the overall mood-board, which contains a lot of elegant and luxury matt materials.

BEE YACHT upper deck interior

The general feeling of the interior is characterised by very clear, light and elegant materials, from the Light Brushed Oak wooden floor to the White Lacquered ceiling. Every wall is made up of two main materials, Light Oak and White Lacquer split by a horizontal dark frame that gives an innate contrast.

Carrara Marble is a key player, especially in the bathrooms, the Owner’s steam bath, and in the staircase lobby. Backlit White Onyx is present as the background of the niches present in the cabins, as a precious detail. Dove Grey Hard Leather is located on every bedhead, in contrast with the Greige Leather. Every steel decoration is brushed, and blue details are present in details like the spot cushions.

Interior Design: The Details

In the main salon, the walls are horizontally crossed by a delicate, high-contrast dark lacquer frame, positioned at about two-fifths of the total height. Below the frame, the walls feature matt bleached oak with vertical veneer lines, while above, the panels are white. This proportion enhances brightness and allows the frame to seamlessly cross through the doors. In many areas, the vertical panelling forms sinuous curves, highlighted by the dark frames that border the ceiling and the natural oak parquet. This arrangement is consistent throughout the entire interior.

The white ceilings maximise the feeling of space, with a subtle contrast between matt and glossy finishes adding depth and interest. The door and window blind boxes are enlarged and feature rounded corners, creating a soft and inviting look. Each radius is accentuated with a brushed aluminium frame, which also appears on the niches showcasing artwork from local artists, blending modernity with artistic elegance.

BEE YACHT main salon interior

The taupe-coloured, moulded wraparound portion of the table’s bow and entrance furniture seamlessly integrates with the salon’s design. The doors highlight the bleached oak of the lower wall panelling, while the tops are finished in luxurious Calacatta Cremo marble, adding a touch of sophistication. The choice of loose furniture allows for different themes in each area, maintaining colour continuity while introducing contrasting green elements for a harmonious yet dynamic interior.

Owner’s Suite

The Owner’s Cabin mirrors much of the design found in the Main Salon, particularly the curved wall that divides the cabin from the bathroom. This continuity creates a cohesive and harmonious aesthetic throughout the yacht.

The bedhead is a standout feature, encased in dove-coloured leather with intricate 3D detailing that extends to house both the bed and the floating bedside tables. This elegant design is complemented by sand-coloured Nabuk leather inserts, interspersed with LED strips, adorning the vertical coverings and the ceiling above the bed, creating a warm and inviting ambiance.

BEE YACHT Owner's Suite

The floating desktop, positioned near the large window, is designed to maximise natural light, enhancing the cabin’s airy and spacious feel. Supported by an aluminium profile on the bow side, the desktop subtly divides the entrance from the cabin, adding functionality without compromising on style.

The Owner’s bathroom maintains the yacht’s overall interior design language and mood board, but with distinct proportions and materials. White and Calacatta Cremo marble are used extensively, with bleached oak appearing primarily in the furniture structure. Unlike other rooms, the bathroom features full-height Calacatta Cremo marble in the wash basin and shower area, replacing the typical horizontal division of the vertical wall panels. Niches, geometrically similar to those in other rooms, contain shelves enhanced with backlit White Onyx, adding a touch of luxurious detail.

BEE YACHT Master Suite Bathroom

The lobby design can be described as transformist, with distinct styles reflecting the different levels of the yacht.

On the Lower Deck, the design mirrors the cabins, featuring horizontal divisions that dominate the vertical coverings. A transparent partition made of decorative glass, inspired by Ottoman art, is positioned at the staircase. This partition serves both as a divider and a safety barrier for guests descending to the lower deck, seamlessly blending functionality with artistic elegance.

In contrast, the Main Deck and Upper Deck lobby design features a soft, sophisticated aesthetic. A squared structure clad entirely in taupe-coloured leather panels houses floating steps made of Calacatta Cremo marble, creating a luxurious and cohesive look. To enhance the sense of airiness and space, the safety handle is recessed within the panelled structure, which is also backlit, adding a modern touch to the design.

On the Upper Deck, this structure acts as a partition, ensuring the bar area adjacent to the staircase remains shielded from view, maintaining privacy and a streamlined look. This thoughtful design enhances the overall experience, making the lobby a central and stylish feature of the yacht.

BEE Yacht lobby

Upper Lounge

The Upper Lounge is markedly different from the Main Salon. In this space, the horizontal division of coverings, the roundness of the panelling, and the large blind box are dominant features.

The aft cabinet, positioned below the ceiling TV lift, echoes the design of the Main Salon’s furniture but with significantly different proportions. To enhance luminosity and create a more relaxed, lounge-like atmosphere, the cabinet is designed to be considerably lower.

The centrepiece of the Upper Lounge is the bar. It features a Corian side panel that curves sinuously to form the bar top facing the guest area, while the square operational portion behind ensures practicality. This elegant design is embellished with backlit White Onyx, similar to the bathrooms, and includes an adapted shelf inside. The front of the bar, facing the guests, is adorned with a commissioned work from a local artist, adding a touch of unique artistry to the space.

Adjacent to the bar and fully facing the guest area is a striking full-height wine cellar, serving as both a functional and decorative feature. The finishes and colours chosen for the lounge, primarily black and brown, create a more intimate and cosy area, offering a stark yet harmonious contrast to the overall design scheme of the yacht.

BEE YACHT Upper Lounge

Guest Cabins

The arrangement of the four Lower Deck cabins, along with their corresponding bathrooms, draws inspiration from the design of the Owner’s Cabin, ensuring a consistent and luxurious aesthetic throughout the yacht.

The bedheads are fully upholstered in leather, maintaining the high level of elegance found in the Owner’s Cabin. The roundness of the vertical panelling adds a soft, sophisticated touch to the rooms.

Full-height wardrobes enhance the luxurious feel of the cabins, featuring doors entirely covered in a leather weave with a three-dimensional effect. This intricate detailing adds depth and texture, elevating the overall design and creating a refined, opulent atmosphere in each guest cabin.

BEE YACHT VIP Cabin

The Wheelhouse serves as a connection between the BEE YACHT’s brand and the shipyard’s background in ship building. Traditionally, green has been the predominant colour inside the wheelhouses of the ships they have built to date, and this heritage is honoured in the design.

The chosen colours for the Wheelhouse are dark green and black, creating a distinctive and sophisticated atmosphere. Much of the furniture is upholstered in dark green leather, while the ceiling is crafted from Nabuk leather in a matching dark green shade. The vertical coverings are made entirely of black-painted oak, providing a striking contrast and adding to the room’s high-tech feel.

This specific colour palette and material choice makes the Wheelhouse a unique and personal space, blending tradition with modernity and reflecting the yacht’s commitment to heritage, innovation, and exploration.

BEE YACHT Wheelhouse

From luxurious interiors to innovative design features, this 35m explorer yacht is perfect for those seeking both adventure and comfort on the open seas.

Virtual Tour

The circumnavigator.

The Selene Classic Explorer 60 is a design from an entirely new mold with the Selene Deep Hull™ structure resulting in a raised sheer and a significantly higher deck which generates increased headroom in the cabins and the engine room. The Selene 60 is a perfect transitional yacht between the successful Selene 53/54 and Selene 62/66 series. She features a full-height engine room, a separate crew’s quarters aft with a transom door.

An expansive and functional flybridge layout incorporates a 10-person U-shaped sofa with a built-in BBQ, sink and refrigerator. One of the unique selling points of the Selene 60 is its full-height commissary, or utility room, that is placed between the owner’s cabin and the engine room for storage, freezer, washer/dryer and access to the electrical compartment.

2,500 nm range at 8 knots in luxury

This commissary is an even better isolator of the engine room noise into the master cabin! Behind the « walk through » engine room you find the lazarette, which is so spacious that you can easily store your tools, spare parts and diving equipment. This roomy lazarette also offers the possibility of building a crew-cabin with head. The standard settee molded into the cockpit creates a gracious space for relaxation under way or at the dock.

The European transom with inset swim platform puts the Selene 60 into the mini mega-yacht class. The FRP hardtop enhances both the functionality and profile of this graceful yacht. The quality and beauty of the Selene 60 have been confirmed by many owners of Selene Trawlers who have described this yacht as « the best designed and most accomplished boat from Howard Chen’s drawing board! » Built to Lloyd’s Category A standards, the Selene 60 has the range, strength, and stability to cross oceans, yet with a moderate draft it is also at home in shallow tropical waters or for gunk-holing rivers and creeks. First deliveries of the Selene 60’s started in the fall of 2006 and since then, over thirty Selene 60 have been delivered…

Trailer for BBC-backed OceanXplorers docuseries starring 87m research vessel released

A new six-part docuseries called OceanXplorers will be coming to Nat Geo on August 18. The ship at the centre of the series is an 87-metre research vessel-explorer yacht hybrid called OceanXplorer, which started life as a commercial ship built by Spanish yard Freire and undertook a two-year refit at Dutch yard Damen.

On board, OceanXplorer has a state-of-the-art research station with both wet and dry labs, a Hollywood-level media production studio and a forward helicopter landing deck with climate-controlled hangar. The vessel also hosts piloted and autonomous underwater drones and two manned Triton submersibles, each of which can dive to depths exceeding 1,000 metres.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ray Dalio (@raydalio)

The vessel and the docuseries have been spearheaded by non-profit OceanX, a company founded by American investor and bestselling author Ray Dalio. He said: "The ship OceanXplorer will take ocean explorers to never-before-seen undersea worlds and allow them to beam back what they encounter via social media, digital experiences, and a TV show."

Dalio is also the owner of OceanXplorer. He later added: "The six-part series is like a modern-day version of the Jacques Cousteau series that inspired me when I was young".

Dalio's son, OceanX founder and creative director, Mark Dalio, said: " OceanXplorer will allow us to pair science and media together like never before and share the excitement and wonder of ocean exploration with a global audience in real time."

OceanXplorers will premiere August 18 on National Geographic and all episodes will stream the next day on Disney+ and Hulu.
