A group of seven people are safe after a water rescue in Des Moines.

Officials say the call came in around 10:30 p.m. Monday night. They say seven people were on a boat when it overturned.

One swam to shore; the Des Moines Police Department threw the other six a rope until a Des Moines Fire Department rescue boat arrived.

No one was hurt during the ordeal.

It all happened near the Lauridsen Skatepark, an area in the river that Des Moines Fire Captain Tad Stoner calls the 'perfect drowning machine'.

"We've had several people throughout the decades of people that go over that low-head dam and get trapped in what's termed the boil," he said.

He said being so close to the dam, it's important to be aware of your surroundings.

"It's about respecting the bodies of water that you're in and being familiar with the dangers that are associated with that," Stoner said.

Authorities are trying to figure out how the boat overturned in the first place.

2 indiana men drown after boat capsizes on illinois lake; granddaughter found safe, 2 indiana men drown after boat capsizes on illinois lake.

MARSEILLES, Ill. (AP) — Two Indiana men have died and a 7-year-old girl has been found safe after the boat they were fishing from was found capsized on an eastern Illinois lake.

Police responded Sunday to a 911 call at LaSalle Lake State Fish and Wildlife area , the Illinois Department of Natural Resources said Monday in a release .

The girl had been wearing a life jacket and was found onshore with park visitors. She had been on the 17-foot (5-meter) boat with her 53-year-old grandfather and her 80-year-old great-grandfather. The two men were not wearing life jackets, according to police.

They were pronounced dead by a coroner after their bodies were recovered about 7:45 p.m. Sunday.

The girl’s grandfather was from Merrillville, Indiana, while her great-grandfather lived in Gary, Indiana.

Police were investigating how the boat capsized. The 2,000-acre lake is near Marseilles, about 84 miles southwest of Chicago.

How to reserve a boat?

Call Yarrow Bay Marina at 425.822.6066 and tell us when you’d like your boat to be ready! Call for extended rental hours on Friday/Saturday .   A $150 deposit (Visa, MasterCard, American Express or cash) will hold your reservation. Warmer months book up quickly, so call today for your preferred dates/times. Your deposit is refundable with a minimum of 24 hours notice of cancellation or rescheduling. Deposits are applied toward your total rental charges.

What type of boat can I rent?

Runabouts (Cobalt, Chris Craft, Bayliner) : each ranging in size from 19 to 21 feet and seat a maximum of seven passengers. SunChaser Pontoon Boat:   24′ seats a maximum of 12 passengers.

Where can I go?

You can take your rental boat on beautiful Lake Washington, Lake Union and Portage Bay. Ask us for suggestions of interesting places to see and restaurants to visit. We’re here to help you enjoy your experience.

What about safety equipment?

All boats are fully equipped with life jackets, a life cushion, a fire extinguisher, flares, a paddle, fenders and lines. Take note of these items before you leave the Marina.

Important Info

Arrive Early. Before heading out on your boating adventure, you will read and complete a rental agreement and safety checklist. In order to give yourself sufficient time to read these documents carefully, please arrive 1/2 hour prior to your reserved time. We will make every effort to accommodate late customers, however, the schedule is not flexible with regard to other customer reservations. You will be required to show a valid driver’s license for identification. One-day Boating Licenses granted.

 F uel Charges / Damage Deposit

Boats are available for rent from opening until closing. Boats will be inspected prior to release and after return to Yarrow Bay Marina. At the end of the rental period, the boat will be fueled and the price of fuel added to your bill. We do not accept personal checks. There will be a $1,500 damage deposit which can be made with a credit card.

Be Mindful of the Time

Boating is fun and it’s easy to lose track of time. Please call us if you are running late to return your boat. To ensure we can accommodate our other customer reservations, unscheduled boating time will incur a $200/hour fee (before closing) and full payment is due at the end of the rental period. Boats that are returned after our rental shop closing hours will incur a $500/hour fee. We recommend putting timers on your cell phones to prevent this fee.

'We're alright:' Captain, crew recall terrifying boat fire aboard Portland fishing vessel

PORTLAND (WGME) -- A fire at sea forced the crew of a Portland fishing vessel to abandon ship Sunday night.

The fishing boat "Three Girls" caught fire around 9 p.m. Sunday while the crew was getting ready to haul in their nets.

They had just minutes to get into an inflatable lifeboat before the fire overtook the ship.

Portland firefighters doused the fishing boat with water, then twice put foam on the smoldering fire to put it out.

One crew member says the last thing he did was go into the smoke-filled cabin to grab five survival suits before abandoning ship.

"We stayed until we couldn’t stay anymore," rescued crew member Steve Ames said.

The fishing vessel “Three Girls” was towed into Portland Harbor Wednesday afternoon, still burning from a Sunday night fire at sea that forced the captain and crew to quickly abandon ship.

"I remember looking at the inside of the galley and seeing a glow and seeing the fire, and looking at the water and being like, ‘This is really happening.’ And all of a sudden, the fire came out on deck,” Ames said.

Ames credits Captain Rob Roberge for quickly deciding to abandon ship, and for getting off a radio message to the Coast Guard telling them their position in the Gulf of Maine.

"United States Coast Guard,” Roberge said. “United States Coast Guard. This is the fishing vessel ‘Three Girls.’ We are on fire."

"He barely had time to make that distress call,” Ames said. “Smoke filled the wheelhouse. He couldn’t breathe. So what he got out, what people heard, we knew help was on the way.”

The captain, four-man crew and an observer from NOAA all safely made it onto a life raft.

All but the captain were wearing survival suits.

From a distance, they could see the burning boat.

"We’re alright,” Ames said. “Just waiting on the helicopter.”

They were rescued two hours later by a Coast Guard cutter out of Portland.

Ames says Roberge's quick decisions saved their lives.

"If he chose to fight that fire, if we went down in that engine room, it would have been, it wouldn’t have been a happy story like it is right now,” Ames said. “No way. No way. A boat fire is not good. That’s the worst-case scenario. And we just all escaped that. Everyone was alive. Nobody hurt. Like, we were happy.”

The boat rental folks at Sunset Watersports were extremely helpful and fun! The crew had winning personalities that made the trip extremely enjoyable and the staff at our boat rental day went out of their way to be helpful during shuttle service and getting us set up with fun GPS coordinates for our pontoon boat rental day. Absolutely incredible boat rental. The crew were fantastic. Christie and Bridget did a wonderful job at Cow Key Marina. If you want a great boat rental in the Key West area, this is the place to go! We rented a pontoon boat and they directed us to a beautiful sandbar for the best day ever!!

We did a full day rental if the 22 foot center console fishing boat. Service was great before and after rental. I selected the incorrect boat when booking online and called in to change the order. They were very accommodating. Staff was very helpful with pointing out spots to check out and when going over the boat. Built in cooler and swim ladder. Overall a great experience!

Sunset Watersports boat rental crew made it easy to rent. The shop had fishing pole rentals, snorkeling rentals and bait. Helped us download the navionics app on our smartphones and prepared us for what the waterways were like. Great guys!

My wife and I were in Key West to celebrate her birthday. The staff were very helpful. They advised us the 21' center console fishing boat would be a better option due to the weather conditions which was a good choice, as it had been renovated recently and had better equipment. The staff prepared us for our outing, we took their advice and had a great day. We cruised around the entire island. Encountered a group of dolphins who joined us for about 30 minutes, playing in our wake and leaping out of the water. It was fantastic! Went to the sandbar and enjoyed relaxing in the ocean. Big thumbs ups from us!

Snipes point sandbar boat rentals:.

Located east of the mangrove isles of Mud Keys, its easily one of the favorite local sandbar hangouts. This sandbar gets even more popular on weekends, where you can find tons of locals from the middle to lower Florida Keys. Snipes Point water is crystal clear and shallow.

Jewfish Basin Sandbar Boat Rentals:

Located just 7 miles north of Key West you will find a series of beautiful sandbars tucked away in between the Harbor Keys & Mud Keys. These sandbars are perfect inlets for boat rentals & very close to our marina dock at Cow Key Marina.

Mud Keys Sandbar Boat Rentals:

The only reason this location is number 3 on the list is due to the difficulty navigating. The Mud Keys are a series of mangrove islands and shallow water way passages. This location is much less popular, not because of it’s beauty but due to it’s true seclusion. We highly recommend asking our company for a guide to help navigate these tough passages.

Boca Grande Sandbar Boat Rentals:

Boca Grande is another amazing sandbar located in just off of Key West. Boca Grande is about 15 miles west of Key West and is a 180 acre uninhabited island located in the Mule Keys. This sandbar is great for exploring & socializing among other visitors. This sandbar is outside of the range of our standard boat rental but you can hire a guide with one of our boat rentals to explore this incredible island.

Boca Chica Sandbar Boat Rentals:

The closest and most accessible of Key West’s sandbars is located just off the island of Boca Chica. We have a large and varied fleet of sailing dinghies & day boats available during lessons or for hire for your own adventure. Each craft have their own merits depending on the sailor’s ability and the weather conditions at the time. We will happily help guide you to a boat that will be suitable for your requirements to enjoy your time on our stunning waters.

Due to the shallow waters between the islands on Scilly all of our day boats have centre plates rather than keels and are essentially large dinghies so still possible to capsize, and some are capable of having an outboard engine fitted. Our day boats for hire offer the experienced sailor a fantastic opportunity to explore the islands. Due to changes in demand etc we only have a few day boats now available.

The Wayfarer is possibly one of the greatest and well-known designs of larger sailing dinghy. The Wayfarer is the main instruction boat for most UK centres due to it being incredibly stable and spacious and its ability to sail incredibly well in a large range of conditions. The majority of our sailing courses will start in these versatile boats, and they make a great choice for sailing boat hire.

Essentially a very large Wayfarer, with plenty of room a large sail area and a large metal centre plate. She sails brilliantly and is capable of taking an outboard. As there is a slight risk of capsize with this boat it must have the outboard stowed when sailing.
