Rolex Yacht-Master Real vs. Fake Guide 2024: How Can I Tell If It Is Real?
Rolex is well-known for creating watches for professionals. Divers have the Submariner, racecar drivers have the Daytona, and even more niched experts like speleologists have the Explorer. And Yacht-Master was launched in 1992, it was a luxurious, nautically-themed watch; but it evolved over the years to be a professional regatta watch. Today, its elegant design has fans beyond yacht clubs and regatta courses.
But The Yacht-Master is expensive that not all people can afford to own. This is why counterfeit Rolexes are everywhere. Sometimes, they are offered at prices that are too good to be true and gullible consumers fall into the trap of purchasing a Rolex watch replica. These days, some fakes are so good that they must be partially disassembled before they can be identified as counterfeit and can fool even the most well-versed Rolex aficionado or expert. This article will teach you how to identify the authenticity of The Yacht-Master from several aspects. Knowing how to spot a fake Rolex watch will save you from paying for a counterfeit watch.

About Rolex Yacht-Master
Inspired by the rich heritage that has bound Rolex to the world of yachting since the 1950s, the Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II models embody the brand’s nautical spirit. The Yacht-Master brilliantly blends function and seafaring style. Presented in 2007, the Yacht-Master II is a regatta chronograph built for yachting competitions.
The Yacht-Master is easily recognizable for its bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel. This characteristic and functional bezel – which enables the wearer to read time intervals, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – plays a full part in creating the unique visual identity of the watch.
The Yacht-Master II is a unique regatta chronograph dedicated to both yachting enthusiasts and experienced sailors. It features a countdown function with a mechanical memory programmable from 1 to 10 minutes which can be synchronized on the fly – a function that responds to the need for precise timing during the crucial starting sequence of a regatta.

Rolex Yacht-Master Real vs. Fake
1. serial numbers.
After 2009 Rolex decided to use a string of random numbers to create its serial numbers. You can check the authenticity of a Rolex by checking its serial number. Every Rolex has a serial number on it, and you can verify the authenticity of Rolex serial numbers through the manufacturer.
A Rolex serial number is always engraved deeply into the metal, while the fake watches have serial numbers that may be simply etched with acid. The placement of the serial number is also a sign of whether it is a true Rolex or not. Look for the serial number on the 6 o’clock side where the band connects to the lug. On a new authentic Rolex watch, the serial number is seen on the inner bezel.
2. Caseback Engravings
For Rolexes manufactured before 2007, a hologram of the crown logo is found on the caseback. Versions of Rolex manufactured after 2007 should not feature the logo. Most casebacks of newer versions are plain polished steel.
With only a few exceptions, the caseback of authentic Rolex watches are usually kept clear of engravings and special features. To determine how to spot a fake Rolex Yacht-Master watch, you can examine the caseback. Some counterfeit watches have a clear back to show off the gears in an attempt to look like an authentic used Rolex. Actual authentic watches of the Rolex brand rarely have a clear back, as this was only used in a few vintage models. Similarly, some counterfeit watches have engravings with Rolex branding in an attempt to look like an authentic Rolex. If you want to figure out how to know if a Rolex is authentic, make sure that the back of the watch is clear.
3. Self-Winding And Mechanical Movements
Rolex craftsmanship is of high quality, and often unmatched. Rolex creates top of the line precision watch components, while fake Rolexes tend to use lower-grade components that lack the Rolex stamp on them.
The movement must have an engraved “movement model, Rolex logo etc” on it. The location of the engraving on the Rolex movement differs from one model to another. Unfortunately, you can’t usually tell the difference in components unless you open the watch up and view the clockwork inside.
Luckily, there is one surefire way to identify cheaper components without opening up the watch: check the movement of the hands. A genuine Rolex has smooth movement of its watch hands, while a fake often has jerky movements that mirror other watch types. The precision of a Rolex is especially important for watches like the Yacht Master, which are used for racing purposes, so checking the movement of the hands is essential if you want to know how to spot a fake Rolex Yacht Master.
Movements of Rolex Yacht-Master
Movements of Rolex Yacht-Master II
4. Font Consistency
An authentic Rolex watch remains consistent in its crafting across the board. This means that the font type on all the text that appears on the watch should look the same. When you consider buying a Rolex Rolex Yacht-Master, how to spot a fake involves taking note of the consistency of the watch’s design. If you look at pictures of fake Rolexes, you will probably notice that different parts of the watch have slightly different fonts or spacing between different words. One of the best methods in how to know a genuine Rolex watch is to have a good eye for consistency and sharp attention to detail.
5. Date Appears Bigger
The cyclops glass feature at 3 o’clock is supposed to magnify the date number by 2.5x legibility. The cyclops glass always protrudes above the crystal, like a bubble—it is never flat and never fitted under the crystal. Run a finger over the watch crystal and feel the lens. You should feel a bump on the convex lens across the date. A flat Cyclops means that the Rolex watch is a fake. Another way to test it is to hold the watch sideways and look at the date without the Cyclops. If the size of the date appears the same, then it’s not a genuine Rolex watch.
A other way to identify a fake Rolex is by observing its date feature. Rolex watches have an instantaneous date display, meaning the date changes precisely at midnight, not gradually. If a Rolex replica shows an in-between date (mid roll) on the dial, it is a telltale sign of a fake since the real Rolex would change the date immediately. This characteristic might not be noticeable unless you have the watch for more than a day, but ideally, you should have already identified the counterfeit before then.
If you find yourself wondering whether the font or magnification on a watch looks right, take it to a seller or expert who you trust.
6. Weigh The Watch
A genuine Rolex watch is always heavier than a knockoff. Before purchasing a watch, do some quick research on Google and check for the actual weight of the Rolex model you want to purchase. Then, weigh the item you are looking at. If it does not weigh the same amount as what you have researched, then it is surely a fake watch.
7. Water Resistance
Although Rolex Submariner timepieces (along with the Sea-Dweller collection) are the only watches designed for deep-sea diving, all models like the Rolex Yacht-Master are water-resistant and perfectly sealed. Once you have the watch dip it in a cup of water for a few seconds and take it out. Before doing this, PLEASE be sure that the crown is securely tightened/screwed in. If there is any leaking of water into the watch on the dial or anything the watch is definitely a fake. All Rolex watches are 100% watertight and many counterfeit watches are not. However, it should be noted that a genuine Rolex watch that is in need of service or repairs may not be water resistant, so this is not a guaranteed way to identify a fake, and should only be done on modern Rolex watches, not vintage models or those that are visibly damaged.
8. Pip or Pearl
The lume pip located at the 12 o’clock position on the authentic Rolex bezel is distinguished by a silver lining around it and fits seamlessly within the confines of the triangle marker surrounding it. Conversely, the lume pip on the counterfeit Rolex’s bezel has a larger, thicker border that extends outside the triangle marker’s boundary. Additionally, it lacks lume material, rendering it unable to glow in the dark like the authentic Rolex bezel’s pip.
Knowing how to spot a fake Rolex prevents you from being scammed. Skip the pawn shop and second hand stores and always buy from an official Rolex dealer to guarantee that the products being sold are legitimate, even on pre owned Rolex watches. If the price is too good to be true, that tells you the watch is not the real deal. Rolex timepieces, after all, is made with high-quality materials and craftsmanship like no other, which explains its hefty price tag.
In other words, the best way to figure out how to tell an authentic Rolex from a fake one is to consult a seller that you know to be trustworthy. This seller probably deals in authentic Rolexes and can help guide you on where to buy authentic Rolex watches if you can’t find what you need with that individual. The seller can also examine any Rolex watch you bring in to check for signs of a fake. To determine whether a particular seller is trustworthy, check customer reviews and examine the watches offered by that seller. In some cases, a seller might be able to show you the exact differences between a real vs. fake Rolex.
Features of Rolex Yacht-Master
Reviews: For those at sea, staying the course is a constant challenge. Defying the laws of logic, bearings can be lost suddenly in difficult conditions, thus requiring adaptability and the capacity to react quickly. Since 1992, the Yacht-Master – equipped with a bidirectional rotatable bezel – has become the established watch of masterful sailors who know how to react in order to keep their heading, in any situation. Technical and elegant, the Yacht-Master is a reliable nautical instrument.
1. Exceptional legibility
Like all Rolex Professional watches, the Yacht-Master offers exceptional legibility in all circumstances, even in the dark thanks to its Chromalight display. The broad hands and hour markers in simple shapes – triangle, circle, rectangle – are filled with a luminescent material emitting a long-lasting glow.
2. Rolesium
The Yacht-Master 37 and Yacht-Master 40 are the only two models in the Rolex catalogue offered in Rolesium versions: the bezel is fashioned from platinum while the rest of the watch is in Oystersteel. These versions also harbour a turquoise- or red-lacquer seconds hand echoing the colour of the Yacht-Master inscription on the dial.
3. 18 ct Everose gold
This exclusive 18 ct pink gold alloy – created and cast by Rolex – features a slightly stronger colour than traditional pink gold and exhibits subtle cool tones. Its sophisticated and contemporary colour resonates particularly well on watches that combine gold and Oystersteel, known as Rolesor versions (a combination of Oystersteel and gold).
4. Cerachrom Bezel Insert
The matt black monobloc Cerachrom bezel insert of the Yacht-Master is made of an extremely hard, virtually scratchproof ceramic whose colour is unaffected by ultraviolet rays, seawater or water that is chlorinated. In addition, thanks to its chemical composition, the high-tech ceramic is inert and cannot corrode. The numerals and inscriptions are moulded in the ceramic and coloured with gold or platinum using a PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) process.

Features of Rolex Yacht-Master II
Reviews: As a chronograph with a bold nautical character, the Yacht Master II occupies a singular place in the Rolex roster of Professional watches. It features an unprecedented mechanical function: a countdown that can be programmed and synchronized on the fly to adjust and re-adjust the watch to regatta start times. An essential tool for any coxswain and their decision-making process, as it allows them to take the best start towards victory.
As for any voyage at sea, time management is vital in a regatta. At its launch in 2007, the Yacht-Master II features an unprecedented mechanical function: a programmable countdown with mechanical memory, synchronizable on the fly. A function that responds ideally to the need for precise timing during the crucial starting sequence of a regatta.
This flexibility is one of the major assets of the Yacht-Master II; its development was a considerable technological challenge. The programming can be mechanically memorized, which makes it possible to start a new countdown without having to reprogramme the watch, for example in the next leg or a subsequent regatta with identical countdown duration.
Furthermore, once the watch’s countdown is launched, it can be synchronized on the fly to match the official countdown via the ‘fly-back’ reset function of the seconds hand and adjustment of the countdown minute hand to the nearest minute.
1. Ring Command System
Rolex achieved perfection when it turned its attention to redefining the purpose and functionality of the bezel. Typically, a bezel operates independently from the internal mechanism; however, the Ring Command bezel in the Yacht-Master II regatta chronograph operates in conjunction with it.
As a mechanical component linked to the movement, the bezel literally acts as the key to the programmable countdown, allowing it to be set and synchronised to the sequence of race start times. Complex in design, but simple in use, it is functionally beautiful.
The countdown’s sophisticated functions were designed to be easily set and operated. The preliminary programming of up to 10 minutes is accessed, and then locked, via the rotatable bezel thanks to Ring Command, a patented system of interaction between the bezel, the winding crown and the movement, developed by Rolex. A technical feat made possible by the brand’s in-house mastery of the entire watch design and manufacturing process, from the case to the movement.
2. A Distinctive Aesthetic
The Yacht-Master II is equipped with a new dial, and new hands that are characteristic of Rolex Professional models, enhancing legibility and sharpening its aesthetic appeal. The dial now features a triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock and a rectangular hour marker at 6 o’clock for more intuitive reading of the watch. A luminescent disc on the hour hand clearly distinguishes it from the minute hand.
The Yacht-Master II’s countdown can be programmed for a duration of between 1 and 10 minutes. The programming is memorized by the mechanism so that at a reset it returns to the previous setting. Once launched, the countdown can be synchronized on the fly to match the official race countdown.
On the right-hand side of the middle case, the Yacht-Master II sports two countdown pushers, specially designed to suggest winches, the manual winding gear on a sail boat. The Yacht-Master II is always fitted on an Oyster bracelet with a Oysterlock safety clasp, equipped with an Easylink comfort extension link.
The Yacht-Master II measures 44 mm in diameter, its large size contributing to the optimal legibility of the dial in all conditions.
3. Cerachrom Bezel Insert
The blue monobloc Cerachrom bezel insert of the Yacht-Master II is made of an extremely hard, virtually scratchproof ceramic whose colour is unaffected by ultraviolet rays, seawater or water that is chlorinated. In addition, thanks to its chemical composition, the high-tech ceramic is inert and cannot corrode. The numerals and inscriptions are moulded in the ceramic and coloured with gold or platinum using a PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) process.
4. Oyster Bracelet
The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex. This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.
5. Calibre 4161 Superlative Movement
The Yacht-Master II is equipped with calibre 4161, a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Its architecture, manufacturing quality and innovative features make it exceptionally precise and reliable. This abundance of Rolex technology includes a patented function – a programmable countdown with a mechanical memory – and comprises some 360 components. Some of them are made by UV-LiGA, a micromanufacturing technology entirely mastered in-house by Rolex.
Is Yacht-Master A Good Investment?
For a retail Rolex model, you will surely pay a premium – especially if you choose one of the precious metal models. On the secondary market, you can get a Yacht-Master for a much lower price, and many collectors find this option a better value for their investment.

Looks fake. Among other things the cyclop doesn't really magnify the date window.
F A K E There's no part of the watch posted in the OP being authentic at all.
I, too, doubt its authenticity, but I believe the model it's trying to be is the 16622. Releases early in the run wouldn't have an engraved rehaut.
Finish and quality zero.
Yeah even from the poor pictures that's immediately apparent to me. I'm wearing a submariner and one glance at my watch even though completely different model and it's plain obvious the fit and finish.
^^^ that, and the fact that one can tell from the picture that the metal is not platinum. There is a slight variation in colour tone between steel, white gold and platinum.
I agree, the metal looks off
Seen plenty of those in Mexico at street market stalls. Soooooooo, to answer your question.. lol
It appears fake to my non-expert eyes, but I have not yet had several drinks which might make it look good and seem like a great deal.

Well guys settled, its Fake. Thank you all Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
F.A.F.
The pictures are a dead giveaway too. The first completely useless and the second upside down - both common techniques used to confuse.
At least Rolex is spelt correctly
Thank goodness! I thought it might read as FOLEX [emoji23]
the bezel has poor casting and machining. thats a red flag.
Comes with a real yacht
The red / orange writing on the dial looks wrong.
Is there anything about it that doesn't look wrong? How could anyone who's ever seen one think it's real?
The refief on the bezel (not to speak of other things) is so cheaply done, that you wouldn't find one of those in a bubble gum vending machine. This is an emetic. You need a master cast and not a cast taken from a bezel which came out of a master cast. If all fakes would be of that horrible quality, then we wouldn't have much problems with such trash, and whoever buys garbage like that, does really deserve it. About the Rolex Yacht-Master Collection
The Rolex Yacht-Master is one of the brand’s youngest collections, having been introduced only 1992. And yet, it’s already one of their most diverse, with two distinct models under the family of watches, and dozens of permutations when it comes to dial designs, bezel styles, and bracelet options.
A look into its history shows that Rolex had plans for a yacht-themed watch decades before the Yacht-Master line was launched. Today, it’s a mainstay in the Rolex catalog.
Here are important milestones in the Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II history.
1958: Rolex entered a partnership with the prestigious New York Yacht Club, a social and boating club which sponsors an annual regatta.
1966: Rolex solidified its ties to the world of sailing when Francis Chichester – one of the world’s pioneering aviators and solo sailors – became the first person to sail around the globe while wearing a Rolex on his wrist. He sailed on his yacht, the Gipsy Moth IV, from August 1966 to May 1967, taking him 29,600 miles around the world.
1970s: Rolex never got around to creating a watch specifically for this category. The brand did make a prototype of the Cosmograph chronograph with the name “Yacht Master” on its dial, but they ultimately decided not to bring it to market.
1992: Rolex finally introduced the modern Yacht-Master – the brand’s first luxury sports watch built for the open seas. Whereas Rolex’s previous sports watches had utilitarian themes – the Submariner for diving, the Daytona for racing, and so on – the Yacht-Master was focused on aesthetics and luxury.
1994: Rolex introduces midsize and ladies’ models of the Yacht-Master
1996: Rolex introduces two-tone (steel and gold) midsize and ladies’ models of the Yacht-Master
1997: Rolex introduces the Rolesium version, which combines a steel body with a platinum bezel and dial. Until today the Rolesium is found exclusively in the Rolex Yacht-Master collection.
2007: Rolex releases the Yacht-Master II, which is the world’s first watch equipped with a programmable countdown timer and a mechanical memory. The Yacht-Master II was unlike anything Rolex had launched before. Not only was it massive with its 44mm case, but it also had a bold, visually striking design that stood out among Rolex’s catalog of versatile timepieces.
2019: Rolex introduces the Yacht-Master 42 to the collection. This is the first 42mm Yacht-Master model, offering a larger option for those who find 40mm too small. The first model came in 18k white gold, also a first for the collection, followed by an 18k gold version in 2022.
Key Features of the Rolex Yacht-Master
The Rolex Yacht-Master collection is composed of two families of watches: the original Yacht-Master, and the Yacht-Master II. While these two models have the same name, they are quite different from each other.
The Yacht-Master was introduced in 1992 as an ultra-luxurious sports watch for yachting and sailing enthusiasts. The nautical-inspired timepiece takes after the Rolex Submariner, but with greater emphasis on luxury materials and aesthetics.
The Yacht-Master II is a relatively new addition to the Rolex portfolio, introduced in 2007. Much larger that the Yacht-Master at 44mm, it is a purpose-built regatta watch equipped with a countdown timer for use in competitive sailing.
FEATURES OF THE ROLEX YACHTMASTER

Rolex Yacht-Master models come in an Oyster case with 100 meters of water resistance, a Triplock winding crown, and a bi-directional rotating bezel with raised 60-minute graduations and numerals. To make the watch easily readable, the dial features lume-filled round, baton, and triangular hour markers; luminous Mercedes-style hands, a date window at 3 o’clock, and a sapphire crystal with a Cyclops lens for easier reading of the date.
Since the introduction of the first all-gold Rolex Yacht-Master model in 1992, Rolex has expanded the line in terms of materials, aesthetic details, and mechanical upgrades. Here are the options available within the collection.

It is also one of Rolex’s most complicated watches, as it features a regatta chronograph with a countdown that can be programmed from 1 to 10 minutes, allowing yacht racers to accurately time the start of a race. ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II DIALS

It features a countdown display which can be programmed from 1 to 10 minutes, and read using the red-tipped arrow hand. Below the hour and minute hands at the center is a running seconds sub-dial. There’s also a red central chronograph hand, which can fly back or fly-forward to its starting position while in motion. It also features 12 square lume-filled hour markers.
ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II MOVEMENTS
The Yacht-Master II is equipped with two of Rolex’s most advanced movements to date, which feature a programmable countdown timer with mechanical memory, and chronograph synchronization.

Popular Rolex Yacht-Master Models
The Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II are both excellent luxury watches that can suit any lifestyle. The Yacht-Master fits the mold of classic Rolex sports watches; while the Yacht-Master II has pushed the boundaries of what regatta watches can do. You can’t go wrong with the Rolex Yacht-Master, but here are some collector’s favorites:
ROLEX YACHT-MASTER with OYSTERFLEX BRACELET
In 2015, the Oysterflex, Rolex’s patented rubber bracelet, made its debut in the Yacht-Master collection. It’s appearance was also marked by several firsts: the first solid Everose gold Yacht-Master, paired with a matte dial and matte Cerachrom bezel.
The practical and edgy combination of solid gold and rubber continued with the release of the 18k white gold Yacht-Master 42 in 2019, and the 18k yellow gold version in 2022. This is a watch for someone who wants a luxurious watch that’s also ready for any adventure.
These models have the Calibre 3235 in place, which offers a 70-hour power reserve, and an upgraded Parachrom hairspring that has 10 times more precision than the traditional hairspring. The Calibre 3235 was also the first movement to receive Rolex’s certification as a Superlative Chronometer, and is regulated to a precision of an impressive -2/+2 seconds a day.
ROLEX YACHT-MASTER RHODIUM DIAL
The stunning combination of Oystersteel and 950 platinum was made even more beautiful with the addition of a sunburst rhodium dial. This luxurious watch is part of the series of Yachtmasters introduced in 2016, which were upgraded with the Caliber 3235 movement mentioned previously. The slate dial is paired with turquoise details on the model signature and seconds hand, which gives just the right amount of color on the sleek monochromatic design.
ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II STEEL EVEROSE GOLD
The highly specialized Yacht-Master II was created as a professional regatta watch which can also be used as a chronograph. On the bezel, it has large 0-10 scale numbers and the Yacht-Master II name. On the dial is a smaller version of this countdown. Together, these allow the wearer to select a countdown interval of anywhere from one to ten minutes.
Aside from being one of the most complicated watches in the Rolex portfolio, the Yacht-Master II also stood out because of its unique look, owing to its 44mm case and bold colors. The steel and 18k Everose gold version is a crowd favorite due to its eye-catching combination of rose gold, blue, and red hues.

A guide to the Rolex Yacht-Master
Over the years, the Rolex Yacht-Master watch has grown significantly, becoming one of the most diverse ranges of Rolex watch available.
The evolution of the luxury brand’s classic sports watch has extended beyond imaginable parallels, offering the avid collector various choices in bracelet style, bezel material and case size over three entire decades. As such, the Yacht-Master continues to prove itself a valuable and dependable mainstay within the manufacturer’s current catalogue, despite many models having become discontinued over the years. To define the Yacht-Master by Rolex, one would categorize it as a luxury sports watch, yet the collection can be broken down into two watches that remain incredibly similar to one another, despite a slightly different name.
. One is the Yacht-Master - a watch that can be considered the original sports model designed by Rolex, intended for setting sail with and enjoying whilst sailing aboard a luxury yacht. The Yacht-Master II, however, is designed for more precise functionality. Equipped with all the technology to enable an individual to record regatta timings, this younger distinction of the model is classified as a watch for racing a yacht as opposed to enjoying alongside a ride on one.
Whether wearing a Rolex Yacht-Master for aesthetical or practical reasons, however, its sleek looks and refined qualities are characteristics that are sought after far and wide amongst Rolex fans. Like with every Rolex, however, there are some factors to research and consider before investing in your very first Yacht-Master and these include pricing, history and features amongst many others.
What are the differences between the Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II?
To break down the key differences between the Rolex Yacht-Master and the Rolex Yacht-Master II, here are a few quick facts. The Yacht-Master is available in sizes of 29mm, 35mm, 37mm, 40mm and 42mm and is manufactured in Rolesium, Everose Rolesor, yellow gold Rolesor, solid 18ct yellow gold, solid 18ct white gold and 18ct Everose gold. The watch offers running hours, minutes and seconds and features a date function at 3 o’clock. A bidirectional rotating bezel has a 60-minute scale upon its surface and each model promises a water resistance of 100 meters. The models are offered on an Oyster bracelet or Oysterflex bracelet. The Rolex Yacht-Master II, however, is available in a 44mm size and is offered in a solid stainless steel version, as well as Everose Rolesor, 18ct yellow gold and 18ct white gold. Function-wise, the models offer running seconds with an adjustable countdown timer with a mechanical memory. The watch also features a ring command bezel, along with 100-meter water resistance and is fitted on an Oyster bracelet.
A brief history of the Rolex Yacht-Master watch collection
A brief history of both the Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II watches is beneficial before investing in a model from this range. Though not introduced until 1992, the Rolex Yacht-Master watch had foundations secured for its release much earlier than that. The brand had partnered with the New York Yacht Club back in 1958, laying down the roots to its heritage in sailing long before the iconic sports watch was conceptualized. By this point, Rolex had ready developed its first waterproof watch thanks to the 1926 Oyster case.
In 1966, the Gipsy Moth IV yacht was sailed 29,600 miles around the world by Francis Chichester, who wore a Rolex on his wrist amongst very few other measuring tools including a sextant and nautical chart. Thanks to the Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch he wore during his journey, time could be tracked amongst rough conditions for an entire 226 days whilst at sea. It put Rolex officially on the radar of seafarers as a manufacturer capable of producing robust and reliable tools for facing the challenging conditions experienced at sea.
In 1992 the world’s first official Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master was released and was crafted entirely from 18ct yellow gold, cementing its status as a luxury tool watch. Over the next 15 years, Rolex would experiment with various case materials until in 2007, the first Yacht-Master II was born. Sportsmen could utilize this tool watch whilst regatta racing – its chronograph features stood out clearly and legibly across the surface of the dial. A programmable countdown timer enabled the individual to measure the countdown time before a race commences for improved precision and a better start to the competition. With flyback and fly-forward functionality, synchronization with the Race Committee was a breeze.
Current Popular Rolex Yacht-Master models
As mentioned, it is the Yacht-Master’s affinity with the sea and its diverse range of styles and case materials that make this collection so widely sought-after within the Rolex watch stratosphere. Paired with cutting-edge technology and primed for yacht race competing, the series has much to offer any luxury sports watch fan. Here are just a few Rolex Yacht-Master watches that have proven their popularity as both a tool and an investment since their release.
Rolex Yacht-Master ref 126622
Rolex Yacht-Master watches made from Rolesium make for an interesting talking point to wear with elegant attire and often make for sophisticated gifts to mark an anniversary or wedding day, especially for those who prefer their wristwatches to exude a very classic look. That said, Rolex packs a lot of modern technology into the design of a Yacht-Master watch such as the model 1266, which not only offers a very compact and manageable case size for those with a slender wrist but has also been forged from a material that is exclusive to the Yacht-Master watch range itself. Stainless Steel and platinum are materials chosen for their robust, corrosion-resistant and luxurious properties, whilst the three-link design of the oyster bracelet creates a timeless look whether paired with elegant or casual attire. Polished middle links and brushed outer links create a unique look against the wrist, especially when you consider that these finishes differ from those seen in the Rolex Submariner and Sea-Dweller models, which instead offer a fully brushed bracelet finish.
Rolex Yacht-Master ref 116680
One of the most popular Rolex Yacht-Master watches has to be the ref 116680 with a blue ceramic bezel. Rolex had begun equipping its watches with Cerachrom bezels back in the year 2005. This model was made available in stainless steel, two-tone Everose, or yellow gold, and since it belongs to the Yacht-Master II collection, measures a broad 44mm diameter. As of 2019, Rolex Yacht-Master II watches were equipped with the Calibre 3235 – a trusted workhorse for many of Rolex’s models. Framed inside this striking blue bezel is a white dial adorned with a small second sub-counter in blue at 6 o’clock, along with a countdown that can be programmed for a duration of between 1 and 10 minutes. The programming is memorized by the mechanism so that at a reset it returns to the previous setting and once launched, can be synchronized on the fly to match the official race countdown.
Rolex Yacht-Master ref 116655
The Rolex Yacht-Master ref 116656 is, without a doubt, one of the most coveted and popular models from this series of luxury sports watches. The model not only features a matte black ceramic bezel but features a set of two-textured, highly polished and raised numerals upon its sandblasted surface. The watch is fitted to an Oysterflex bracelet, promising all-round comfort and thanks to its unusual choice of contrasting rich black and luxurious pink gold colours, can be enjoyed by both male and female Rolex fans alike. An Everose case and gold serrated ring complete its look, combining nicely with the elegant black bezel, whilst on the display itself, cathedral-type hands and a cyclops date window reside.
The Rolex Yacht-Master II ref 226659
Slightly larger in size is the 42mm Rolex Yacht-Master II watch with the reference 226659, which features a stunning 18ct white gold case and bezel with a striking black Cerachrom bezel inlay for precise tracking of elapsed time. The Oysterflex bracelet is just one of the many appealing features of the Rolex Yacht-Master series. Although creating the aesthetic and sporty look of a rubber strap with its outer elastomer rubber shell in black - inside the structure of the bracelet is a series of flexible metal inserts. The Rolex Yacht-Master II ref 226659 debuted in 2019 with the desirable Calibre 3235 secured to the heart of its case, creating plenty of power reserve for those occasions when taken off the wrist, promising superior reliability and accuracy. Its classic black and white gold colourway make it easy to pair wot formal, casual or elegant attire.
There will always be plenty of reasons to invest in a Rolex Yacht-Master watch. Having been equipped with a reliable movement and a set of unique features that enable superior regatta timings out on the water, there is little else on the market that matches the supreme craftsmanship and instantly recognizable aesthetics of the iconic Rolex Yacht-Master watch. Whether you have any use for the polarizing watch’s regatta timer feature or not, it is one of the most niche complications watches imaginable. The Yacht-Master will always be a timepiece that holds its value, symbolizing a brand of significant provenance and value.

Yacht-Master
Staying on course, mapping invisible routes.
For those at sea, staying on course is a constant challenge. When dealing with the elements, nothing is certain and constant reaction is required to stay in the right direction. Since its launch in 1992, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master has been equipped with a bidirectional rotatable bezel that facilitates the calculation and reading of navigational time. Elegantly combining functionality and nautical style, this watch has made its mark well beyond its professional realm.
A shared quest for precision
Knowing where you are in space and time, setting a course and sticking to it are vital in navigation. Given its function, the watch is an essential tool for sailors to assess their position. Regarded as the most precise horological instruments in the world, marine chronometers have been certified by astronomical observatories since the 18th century. At the time, the ultimate authority for measuring chronometric precision was the Kew Observatory in Great Britain.
In 1914, the founder of Rolex, Hans Wilsdorf, had one of the brand’s watches tested by this very observatory, which certified it as a chronometer: a first in the watchmaking world for a wristwatch. Since then, renowned sailors, such as Sir Francis Chichester and Bernard Moitessier, have navigated the seas with Rolex wristwatches serving as onboard chronometers.
Matching the precision of marine chronometers was fundamental to Rolex’s watchmaking.
Designed for navigators
Sailing occupies a special place in the world of Rolex. In 1958, the brand partnered the New York Yacht Club, creator of the legendary America’s Cup. Rolex then formed partnerships with several prestigious yacht clubs around the world and became associated with major nautical events – offshore races and coastal regattas.
These strong ties culminated in 1992 with the launch of the Yacht-Master. Boasting the robustness and waterproofness of our Oyster case, this chronometer is fitted with a bidirectional bezel with raised 60-minute graduations to enable navigational time to be calculated and read.

Precious on land and at sea
Available in three diameters – 37, 40 and 42 mm – and in various precious versions – 18 ct yellow, white and Everose gold – as well as in Everose Rolesor and Rolesium versions, the Yacht-Master is unique in the world of Rolex professional watches. An elegant watch with a sporty character, it was the first to be paired with an Oysterflex bracelet in 2015.
In 2023, after testing under real-life conditions by acclaimed helmsman Sir Ben Ainslie, Rolex launched a new version of the Yacht-Master 42. It is made of RLX titanium, a high-performance material, at once light, robust and corrosion resistant.
A veritable ally at sea, the Yacht-Master also elegantly adorns the wrists of navigators once back on solid ground. With many different versions, it is a model that transcends its seafaring origins. It has become a watch for those who know how to change course without losing sight of the horizon, moving freely.

Rolex Yacht-Master
The Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II models embody the spirit of the sailor. ETA 2824-2 The first movement to know or use is nothing more than the ETA2824-2 and Seiko 7S26, which ETA2824-2 is not only stable, high accuracy, but also has hand-chain function, so the price is higher than the Japanese movement, but in all aspects Said that it is still the novice's first choice, the same with the ETA2892-A2, ETA7750 listed as one of the ETA Sambo (another 6497,6498 series also has the catch-up momentum), but many low-priced fake table and the so-called Taiwan system, Also known as the use of this movement, the result of too much flooding, so many people just hear the ETA2824-2 produce antipathy, while ignoring his excellent nature.

ETA 7750 In fact, I'm not accustomed to 7750 called ETA7750 I prefer to call it Valjoux7750, because before being acquired by the ETA, Valjoux is a well-known chronograph movement, but also a lot of big-name are using the movement, Breitling Valjoux7750 can be said to be very Emotional, although Breitling watches may not be familiar with, but I know that many models are used in the timing models Valjoux7750 series of movement

DCI arrest 3 suspects behind fake gold scam in which foreigners lost Sh341M
The two foreign nationals lost more than Sh341million to the suspects in a well-crafted scheme that was brought to light by DCI
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have conducted a successful raid in which three individuals believed to have conned two foreigners Sh340million were arrested.
Recommended articles
According to the DCI, Allain Mwadia Nvita, Daniel Ogot and Frank Kateti scammed Marco Colombo Conti and his business associate Satbinder Singh in a fake gold scam that left the two foreigners sh340million poorer.
The well-crafted scam started in June 2022 when Marco jetted into the country with the intention of buying 100kg of gold from Allain Mwadia Nvita.
The foreign national parted with about 400,000 US dollars (Sh51.6 million) paid via a law firm named Squire AfriLaw Consult Limited.
Suspects fail to deliver
The amount was to cover duty and other charges in the deal and Marco was to recover the amount from the sale of 12kg of gold which Allain was to provide for him to fly out with.
“This however did not happen since when he was just about to leave, the seller informed him that he could not leave with the same 12kg of gold since it was part of the bigger consignment he was purchasing from him, making a total weight of 112kg. He then advised him that he could keep the same safely in a safe box at Mysafe Vaults at the Village Market in Gigiri, Nairobi which he accepted.” DCI noted.
Marco jetted back into the country on February 2024 in the company of his business partner, Mr Satbinder Singh and met Allain Mwadia Nvita with the intention of purchasing gold.
Businessmen requested to pay more millions
Once again, the businessmen were requested to pay 162,240 Euros (Sh23.2 million) and 548,830 Euros (Sh78.4 million) respectively for duty and other charges with the agreement that 31kg of gold would be provided for the foreigners to carry out of the country.
The gold would cover for all the payments made so far in the deal and on February 9, 2024, the foreign nationals collected 31kg of gold from Mysafe Vaults at the Village Market and proceeded to the Clearing Agent (Daniel Ogot) office where the box was opened and the consignment divided into two and packed into blue metallic boxes that were sealed, signed and stamped.
As they left for the Airport, Daniel Ogot and Frank Kateti promised to bring with them the consignment and the necessary documents to the Airport but they failed to honor their part of the bargain.
With no option left, the foreigners flew out and while in Italy, Daniel Ogot informed them that an error in declaring the weight of the consignment had led to confiscation by the Customs department and in addition, their license had also been suspended.
Payment of 1.5 Million USD to suspects
Ogot explained that the Customs department had imposed on his company a fine equivalent to 20% of the value of the consignment amounting to 1,562,000 US dollars which if not paid, then the entire consignment was at the risk of being confiscated.
Still convinced that the deal was legit, Satbinder flew to Kenya and paid out 1,438,460 Euros through the escrow bank account in the names Mosota Abunga & Associates Advocates, LLP hoping to rescue the said gold.
He was then taken to Forodha house within JKIA where he met a lady namely Susan Oketch who he was informed was working with the customs department who not only confirmed to him that the fine was authentic but also supplied him with some of the ownership documentation.
Still hoping to receive the gold, the businessman jetted back to the UK where the suspects continued to take him in circles until he eventually contacted the Commissioner General KRA to establish the authenticity of the documents provided.
The matter was referred to the DCI and upon thorough investigations, the documents were established to be fake.
DCI smoked out the suspects from their hideout and arrested them.

Viral ‘chase bank glitch’ isn’t the hack people thought it was.

How Financial Stress Contributes To Poor Decision Making And How To Avoid It
A viral social media trend exploited a loophole for JP Morgan Chase customers to get free money at the ATM — or so they thought. The glitch involved depositing fake checks for large sums of money and removing the portion of available funds before the check cleared. While this so-called glitch is essentially a form of check fraud, it demonstrates the harmful nature of viral activity combined with poor financial advice in times of financial stress or hardship.
The Reality Behind Viral "Free Money" Trends
A spokesperson for Chase shared that consumers should be skeptical and if something seems too good to be true, it likely is according to an article from the NY Post . The spokesperson shared “We are aware of this incident, and it has been addressed. Regardless of what you see online, depositing a fraudulent check and withdrawing the funds from your account is fraud, plain and simple.”
This is not the first time viral social media has nudged consumers into poor financial decision-making, however. Major examples include:
- Pyramid schemes like the viral blessing looms/money circles;
- PPP loan fraud schemes;
- Cash app scams;
While many times these trends end up being misleading at best and illegal at worst, unfortunately, ignorance is not an excuse for breaking the law which can lead to greater financial trauma-related stress, fines or penalties, and even jail time. The long-term impact of some of these schemes like the Chase bank check fraud can also result in disqualification from participating in banking services and a negative impact on consumer credit reports.

Apple phone 16, iphone 16 pro release date schedule: your complete countdown, ukraine strikes power plant near moscow to end war and putin’s rule, the impact of financial stress on decision-making.
47% of Americans say money is negatively impacting their mental health says a survey conducted by Bankrate. Financial stress specifically can induce behavior that regulates individuals’ exposure to that stressor. According to a study by PeerJ, stress provokes a pattern of harm-avoidant behavior.
These findings can demonstrate the susceptibility of financially stressed populations to these trends due to their current financial status. That is to say that a lack of financial education on the negative impact of these trends can make the prospect of “free money” an appealing one, thus engaging in a harm-avoidant behavior by decreasing the burden of their current financial stressor.
Alternatively, the potential consequences of engaging in the financial fraud is a distant enough harm that the slight relief experienced by engaging in a potentially risky behavior coupled with demonstrations of success seen on social media make it a viable choice for relief in the moment. While these findings don’t change the legal implications of the behavior, it does explain how the financial stress and the appearance of relief from that stress contributes to the virality of these trends.
Understanding the Red Flags of Viral Financial Trends
A good rule of thumb when it comes to these viral financial trends is to do your own research. If the solution to your financial problems is going viral on social media, or drives up scarcity with a message of act now before it’s too late, it’s probably not a viable or legitimate solution.
- When in doubt, go to the source. If the offer or solution indicates it’s coming from a well known brand or entity look for official statements from said brand or entity highlighting the offer.
- Avoid providing sensitive information over the phone or online to unverified sources.
- If you are pressured to recruit others in order to claim your reward, you’re likely participating in a pyramid scheme.
- Seek help from reputable financial counselors or financial therapists, emergency assistance programs, or other credentialed financial professionals. Not all financial professionals are created equally as some specialize in a particular area or function that may not be relevant to your specific inquiry.
- Visit the FINRA database for professional designations to learn more about the different types of designations available and how they can help with your specific inquiry or need.

Rolex Yacht-Master 40 Ultimate Buying Guide
If you could buy a Rolex watch for yourself, which would it be? We guess most people would have a long list. However, most people wouldn’t think to choose the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 – a hidden jewel in the Rolex professional line up in a 40mm stainless steel case.
To take you back in time, Rolex Yacht-Master (YM) was in development for a while. It’s regarded as one of the most demanding watches produced by Rolex and took several years to finish. Its concept was born as early as the mid-1960s, but it wasn’t until the 1990’s that the model was officially released to the market.
With its updated styling and re-engineered mechanical movements, the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 is a unique watch that straddles style and luxury at a comparatively lower price. Below, we’ll discuss the Rolex Yacht-Master 40, and provide expert tips when buying the watch.
Rolex Yacht-Master 40: An Ultra-Modern Design
A line up of the Oyster Perpetual family, Rolex Yacht master 40 collection is a series of watches with a unique design built to withstand the elements. It was originally designed for diving enthusiasts but is refined enough to fit the daily wearer.
The Yacht-Master 40 was first introduced in the 90s. Since then, it has undergone several upgrades. One of the first products of the YM line is the ref. 16628 in 18k yellow gold. In 1999, amidst the Y2K bug, the brand introduced another line in caliber 3135 movement – the ref. 16622. Instead of an 18k yellow gold, the watch boasts stainless steel material with a platinum bezel. Back then, the watch model was touted as the “celebrity favorite” as Phil Collins, Bruce Willis, and other personalities were spotted wearing it.
Fast forward to 2012, the ref. 116622 was born. It still had the platinum dial but with some distinctive configuration, such as the shimmering effect and a glittering finish. Finally, the 126622 joined the Rolex catalog in 2019. The best thing about this watch is that it offers an Oysterflex bracelet option that allows for increased flexibility without sacrificing comfort or style.
With its evolution, the Rolex Yacht Master 40 is a stunning watch with an elegant and stylish design, perfect for any occasion. Above all, it has all of the features you would expect from a luxury watch brand like Rolex:
- The 40 mm Oyster case exemplifies solid craftsmanship and elegance.
- It comes with a sapphire crystal that protects its face from scratches.
- The model also features an automatic movement with a date display at 3 o’clock on the dial.
- The bezel is made of ceramic and titanium, which makes it incredibly strong and durable.
- Rolex Yacht-Master 40 watch comes with an Oyster Steel bracelet that is resistant to rust and corrosion.
- With a folding Oysterlock safety clasp, you can easily put on or remove it without worrying about it falling off.
- As the name implies, this watch is popular with yachtsmen because it has high water resistance and a rotating bezel.
Reasons To Buy a Rolex Yacht-Master 40
As a successful person, we know you’ll choose to grab a Rolex – specifically a YM 40 model due to its bolder look. Beyond that, there are several reasons to buy a YM 40 watch.
Signifies Status & Success
The Rolex Yacht Master 40 is a watch that says quite a bit about its wearer. Whenever you have it on your wrist, it simply shouts, “You’ve made it!” Created to stand the test of time, it represents the pinnacle of exquisite watchmaking. It’s an icon of success, power, and prestige.
No matter what you do or where you go, this watch will serve as a reminder of your accomplishments. You worked hard to get where you are. It’s time to enjoy the fruits of your labor by treating yourself to one of the Yacht-Master 40 series.
Functionality
Rolex Yacht-Master 40 has always been the symbol of precision and excellent performance, thanks to its Chronograph movement. With its sleek lines, accurate timekeeping, and blistering performance, the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 is a tool watch built to last. You can trust that it keeps up with your relentless pace. It’s no wonder that this beautifully-crafted timepiece has been a favorite of professionals, businessmen, and sailors for years.
Investment Potential
Due to the brand’s longstanding history and notable name, Rolex watches are currently worth a significant amount on the vintage market, making buying a used model or original model watch a sound investment. Also, due to their high price tag, they hold value whenever you want to resell them in the future.
What To Look For When Buying a Rolex Yacht-Master 40 Watch
The Rolex Yacht-Master 40 is essentially a luxury yacht on your wrist. It’s bold, powerful, and gives you the feeling of freedom. However, there are a few things that you need to know before you purchase this hefty piece. If you take the time to check out these few tips, it will make it much easier for you to get one of these watches and enjoy the lifestyle that comes with it.
Examine the Condition of the Watch
Like most things in life, the condition affects the value of a Rolex watch. It’s especially important if you’re looking to purchase a pre-owned Rolex Yacht-Master 40. Mostly, you’ll look for one in excellent condition and priced below the high end of reasonable. However, these watches are rare and are almost impossible to find.
Nevertheless, when you buy, thoroughly check the condition of the watch, such as:
- The bezel, crystal, or bracelet should be free from deep scratches.
- There should be no stains, marks, or corrosion on the dial and markers.
- The links in the bracelet should be snug and not loose or stretched out.
Additionally, watch boxes and maintenance documentation come with new YM 40 watches. However, if a pre-owned watch doesn’t have paperwork that comes with it, the only way to ensure authenticity is to be very knowledgeable about the model. In addition, reputable sources like Bob’s Watches offer at least a year’s warranty.
Be Alert on Spotting Fakes
Yacht-Master 40 (or Rolex watches, in general) are a good business due to their quality and price. That’s why many people get the opportunity to sell imitations to make money.
With that in mind, here are tips on what to look for when trying to spot the real deal:
- The watch’s weight speaks of the quality materials used to create it. Thus, if it’s a light one, it means they’re made of low-quality materials.
- The Rolex Yacht-Master 40 is remarkable, so its second-hand movement is smooth and not choppy.
- It has a completely clear and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. A watch with a tinted or chipped crystal is probably fake.
- Genuine YM 40 watches are made of precious metals. They feature a variety of different styles, but they all have a silky-smooth finish to them. Fakes have a dull look.
- The luminous markers should be visible in the dark, and the dial should be free of scratches or imperfections.
- Ensure that the bezel is moving smoothly without catching or clicking.
Moreover, do your research and employ all the tactics you can to ensure you’re getting a genuine product. Any trace of imperfection that isn’t normal wear and tear should make you question the authenticity of the piece.
Shop from a Certified Seller
To save yourself from dealing with fake YM 40, always buy from a certified dealer. They are typically well-established businesses that have been selling fine timepieces for decades. They should be registered with their local government and have the proper tax paperwork available upon request.
A reputable watch dealer will have a professional staff, carry a large stock of new or pre-owned watches, have a warranty policy, and never be pushy or try to rush you into making a purchase. They should be familiar with the process and will keep you informed every step of the way. If you ever find yourself feeling uncomfortable or uncertain of the seller’s intentions, leave immediately.
How Much Does a Rolex Yacht-Master 40 Cost?
Rolex Yacht-Master 40 watches are a classic, timeless design that can be worn by anyone. While most people will say it’s pricey, you might be surprised to learn that they’re relatively affordable, especially compared to other Rolex watches. Depending on the model, age, and materials used, you can expect to pay between $5k and $50k for a new or used Rolex Yacht-Master 40.
Shop Our Rolex Yacht-Master 40 Collection
Without a doubt, the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 is one of the most versatile watches in the brand’s lineup. If you’re interested in buying a new or pre-owned YM 40, we’re sure that you will find the perfect one in our Rolex Yacht-Master 40 collection. We pride ourselves on our selection of high-quality, durable Men’s Rolex watches you can wear everyday.

Moscow fraudsters receive phony $215,000 for 22 lbs of fake gold
Moscow fraudsters receive phony $215,000 for 10 kilo of fake gold.
Moscow's Chertanovsky District Court is reviewing a criminal case concerning a group of men who tried to swindle a pawnshop worker by giving him 10 kilograms (22 lbs) of a cheap metallic alloy that they said was gold, Interior Ministry spokeswoman Irina Volk told the RIA Novosti news agency.
"According to the investigation, three men pledged pieces of light yellow metal weighing a total of 10 kilograms to a pawnshop worker saying it was gold with the aim of receiving 14 million rubles ($215,000) in credit. Earlier, they had already received more than six million rubles from the victim under the pretext of investing it in a joint gemstone business," said Volk.
Two lawsuits have been filed, one for fraud and one for attempted fraud.
During the deal, which was monitored by the police, the counterfeiters received 14 million imitation rubles for the fake gold and were then detained by the OMON (special federal police). The alleged perpetrators may receive a 10-year jail sentence.

The story of the Moscow gold: How the Spanish war was lost
Francisco Olaya 'El Oro de Negrin'
(Ediciones Madre Tierra, Mostoles 1990)
This book is the product of almost thirty years investigation, involving examination of thousands of books and pamphlets, around a million documents, and the combing of 32 archives in Spain and beyond. Olaya's work is an attempt to come up with a satisfactory explanation of the denouement of the Spanish civil war. He is highly critical of the leadership of the PSOE (Socialist Workers Party of Spain, now in power) during the civil war.
In great and documented detail Olaya examines the whole topic of what has hitherto been known as the 'Moscow gold' and which he re-christens 'Negrin's gold', gold to the tune of 5,500 million pesetas (1937). About half of this sum wound up in the Soviet Union. A small portion went to France. The remainder passed to the republican government's purchasing commissions, set up by Indalecio Prieto of the PSOE to obtain war material.
In 1954 Jose Peirats was commissioned by the CNT -in-exile to write his monumental five volume 'La CNT en la revolucion espanola'. In the course of his researches he was accorded access to documentation belonging to the CNT and in London in the keeping of Polgare. When Polgare died in 1957, access to the documents was offered to Olaya by CNT colleagues aware of his researches. Among the documents, he discovered copies of 52 letters written to Negrin by his special agent, identified only as 'C'.
One of the reports from 'C' is an account of an exchange between Salvador do Madariaga (the philosopher and original wartime Ambassador to Britain) and the British Foreign Minister, in which British preoccupation with helping the Francoist side was evident. Olaya, using textual clues, attempted to Identify 'C'.
At first Olaya suspected one Calvino, who had figured in all the Purchasing Commissions ('C' had complained of corruptions by these commissions). Calvino however denied this and further investigations led Olaya to conclude 'C' had been PSOE luminary Celestino Alvarez. This was confirmed to him by two agents who had been operating on behalf of the CNT - FAI in Paris at the time. Further inquiries led Olaya to records from Turkish customs and cargo checks (by a French secret agent) of shipping that passed through the Dardanelles en route to Spain with foodstuffs and war materials. Olaya lists this information in an appendix to his book.
A record of the accidental discovery (at the bottom of a crate of goods being returned to the USSR as defective or unusable) of gold led Olaya to query the conventional account of the shipment of Spain's gold reserves to the USSR 'for safe keeping'. Other seemingly unrelated evidence led to the conclusion that, aside from the usual shipments, gold was removed from Spain via the diplomatic pouch to Prague and, also, unrecorded, aboard other vessels.
Olaya holds that the war was lost by the republic due to corruption in the Purchasing Commissions plus the failure of Negrin and Prieto (when so informed by 'C') to take remedial action.
Olaya argues that half of the gold reserves were was sent to the USSR and half to France, partly for their use of the Purchasing Commissions and partly to open accounts in the name of specific individuals… an account in Negrin's name held 390 million francs, one in the name of Julio Lopez Masegase held 198 millions. Olaya's book details all these. He says that so far no account has been taken of the assets seized from Franco's supporters, reckoned at almost three times the value of the gold held in Spain's treasury.
Franco was later able to recover a part of what had been described as Negrin's personal treasure. Negrin's ability to realise the value of his gold in France makes nonsense of the claim that gold had to be removed to the USSR for safekeeping. Olaya states: 'I wanted to check out everything sold by C who was Negrin's informant on activities taking place abroad but I wanted confirmation from other sources. To my surprise, I was to amass a wealth of documents that confirmed and expanded upon the whole business'.
In 1988 Olaya's book in manuscript was a finalist for the 'Espejo de Espana' prize awarded by Planeta publishers. However, Planeta refused to publish it, as did all of the other major publishers in Spain. As a result, the book has been issued by Ediciones Madre Tierra (Mother Earth) of Mostoles. Its author claims: 'The book is based on documents and we are not championing any interests or making partisan propaganda, merely telling the whole truth'.
The book's appearance has coincided with a PSOE desire to sell itself to the electorate under the slogan of '100 years of Integrity with the Socialist Party'. Olaya himself has explained 'it may appear that the book has emerged at an opportune time, but no, that is mere coincidence'. ~ Paul S.
