This place is a great place to keep one's boat. Terry and Ramon are great! The place is very well maintained. Recent upgrades have includes large runs of new dock, new dock boxes, and new electrical service. They've got a water skimmer at one of the two locations and are adding one to the other location right now. Terry just makes it easy to enjoy boating here and Ramon will do anything for anybody. The convenience store is great to have nearby.

The on site manager, Terri is great! The docks are well maintained and the dock manager, Ramon is friendly, helpful, and is a go-to for pretty much any and everything!!! Pricing is a little high for its location but since they've put in cctv the value has increased some.

Boat bursts into flames at Wildwood, NJ marina

Trish Hartman Image

WILDWOOD, New Jersey (WPVI) -- A boat caught fire at a Wildwood marina Thursday afternoon, sinking and damaging the dock.

Officials say no one was injured.

Viewer video sent to Action News shows the 42-foot boat burning at the Schooner Island Marina.

The plume of smoke could be seen for miles. Witnesses say they heard an explosion.

island yacht marina

"The whole sky was nothing but black. The sun was blocked and everything," said Mark Demberger of North Wildwood.

Officials say the boat was at the end of the fuel dock when it burst into flames around 12:40 p.m.

Two people who were on the boat at the time escaped without injury. Four Marina employees were evaluated at the scene but refused transport to the hospital.

"They were in the immediate area of the fire as well as other employees who were trying to assist with getting fire extinguishers initially before they realized the fire was too extensive," said Wildwood Deputy Fire Chief Daniel Dunn.

The location of the boat - at the end of the dock - made for a challenging job.

With the help of other nearby companies, the fire was under control in about an hour. A portion of the dock was damaged.

Now what's left of the boat is underwater.

"Once the boat sank, the burning fuel rose to the surface of the water and started to spread towards other docks. So they had to form a foam blanket around that burning fuel to prevent extension to any other docks or boats," said Dunn.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Cape May County Fire Marshal's Office and the New Jersey State Police.

Officials say next they're going to work with Seatow and the marina to pull the wreckage out. That will help in determining a cause.

Yacht Catches Fire, Sinks at Wildwood Marina; No Injuries Reported

Fire truck enroute to call.

WILDWOOD, NJ — A 42-foot yacht caught fire and sank on Thursday afternoon while moored at the fuel dock of Schooner Island Marina, according to the City of Wildwood Fire Department. The vessel was fully engulfed in flames before 1 p.m., prompting a significant emergency response.

Firefighters from Wildwood, North Wildwood, and Erma initially responded to the scene. Upon arrival, the severity of the fire led to an upgrade to a full first alarm assignment, which brought in off-duty firefighters and additional resources from Wildwood Crest, Rio Grande, and Stone Harbor fire companies. Fire boats from North Wildwood and Stone Harbor also assisted in battling the blaze.

The fire happened just feet away from the marina fuel pumps.

The firefighters launched an “aggressive attack” on the fire, which had spread to the dock and a nearby shed. Despite their efforts, the yacht eventually sank due to the large volume of water used to extinguish the flames. A subsequent fuel fire ignited on the water’s surface but was quickly contained using foam. The fire was declared under control within approximately 40 minutes.

No injuries were reported in the incident. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.

NASA Turns to Elon Musk, Space X to Bring Stranded Astronauts Back to Earth

In a move that underscores NASA’s unwavering commitment to safety, the agency has decided to bring Boeing's Starliner spacecraft back to Earth without astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams aboard. Instead, the spacecraft will make its return journey uncrewed, allowing NASA and Boeing to gather additional testing data without taking unnecessary risks.

The decision comes after a series of issues were identified with the spacecraft, including helium leaks and problems with the reaction control thrusters as Starliner approached the International Space Station in June. Since then, NASA and Boeing engineers have been hard at work analyzing data, conducting tests, and exploring contingency plans. Despite their efforts, the uncertainty surrounding the spacecraft’s performance led NASA leadership to prioritize the astronauts’ safety and opt for an uncrewed return.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson emphasized the inherent risks of spaceflight, particularly during test flights, stating, "Spaceflight is risky, even at its safest and most routine. A test flight, by nature, is neither safe, nor routine. The decision to keep Butch and Suni aboard the International Space Station and bring Boeing's Starliner home uncrewed is the result of our commitment to safety: our core value and our North Star."

island yacht marina

Wilmore and Williams, who have been integral to the Expedition 71/72 crew since their arrival at the station in June, will continue their mission through February 2025. They will eventually return to Earth aboard a Dragon spacecraft as part of NASA's SpaceX Crew-9 mission, which is now slated to launch no earlier than September 24, 2024.

As for Starliner, its uncrewed return to Earth will provide valuable data that will inform future improvements and corrective actions for the spacecraft. NASA and Boeing remain focused on ensuring that Starliner meets all safety and performance requirements before it is certified for regular crewed missions.

Steve Stich, manager of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, acknowledged the progress made so far, stating, "The NASA and Boeing teams have completed a tremendous amount of testing and analysis, and this flight test is providing critical information on Starliner's performance in space. Our efforts will help prepare for the uncrewed return and will greatly benefit future corrective actions for the spacecraft."

With the Crew-9 mission on the horizon, NASA and SpaceX are working to adjust the mission’s configuration to accommodate Wilmore and Williams, including reconfiguring seats, carrying additional cargo, and preparing Dragon-specific spacesuits. The upcoming launch will also mark the ninth rotational mission to the space station under NASA's Commercial Crew Program, furthering the agency’s goal of safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation to and from the orbital outpost.

As NASA continues to push the boundaries of space exploration, the lessons learned from Starliner’s journey will play a crucial role in shaping the future of human spaceflight.

Transforming the Seaside Heights Oceanfront: A Major Redevelopment Is on the Horizon

Seaside Heights, NJ, is about to undergo a dramatic transformation, and it’s starting with one of the most prominent oceanfront blocks in town. The area around Lincoln Avenue and Ocean Terrace, once dotted with aging motels like the Surfside, Glendale, and Dry Dock, has been officially designated as an area in need of redevelopment. And what’s coming next is nothing short of game-changing.

Enter the Beachfront Oasis Hotel—a bold new vision set to breathe fresh life into this prime stretch of coastline. Covering an entire oceanfront block, this upcoming development will replace the outdated motels with a sleek, modern hotel that’s set to redefine the Seaside Heights experience. Imagine a stunning 180-room hotel rising up where dilapidated buildings once stood, offering guests panoramic views of the Atlantic and a host of luxurious amenities.

Behind this ambitious project is 6M Seaside LLC, led by Boston developer William Caulder. With plans for not just the hotel but also a state-of-the-art banquet facility, this development is poised to become a cornerstone of Seaside Heights’ revitalization efforts. The block, which has long been crying out for a makeover, is finally getting the attention it deserves.

island yacht marina

The redevelopment of this key oceanfront area has been in the works for some time. The borough council recently discussed 6M Seaside’s proposal in a closed session, focusing on the terms of a potential redevelopment agreement. While the specifics remain confidential, it’s clear that the transformation of this block is a top priority for the town.

Once complete, the Beachfront Oasis Hotel will not only enhance the aesthetic of the Seaside Heights shoreline but also address a critical need for modern lodging in the area. With the town’s summer population soaring to around 65,000, the lack of quality accommodations has been a longstanding issue—one that this new development aims to solve.

island yacht marina

So get ready, Seaside Heights. The days of rundown motels are numbered, and a new era of luxury and elegance is just around the corner. The Beachfront Oasis Hotel is set to take over this entire oceanfront block, bringing with it a fresh wave of excitement and opportunity for everyone who loves the Jersey Shore.

Advanced reservations are strongly recommended at the Yacht Haven Grande Miami at Island Gardens.  Berthing is not guaranteed without a confirmed reservation.  We ask that you provide advanced notice, when feasible, of your approximate arrival time so we can be fully prepared for your arrival and minimize any inconvenience to you.

Please Note: Captains and his/her assignee must check-in/check-out with the marina office for each stay unless otherwise arranged with marina management.

Upon departure, we request you contact the marina office 1-2 hours prior to departure to ensure all items are in order.  A receipt can be provided at the marina office or emailed upon request to the email address provided at the time of check-in.  If all items are in order, please hail the marina office on VHF Channel 71 if you would like assistance with disconnection and lines.

Temporary Slips

In the event an early check-in and/or late check-out is unable to be accommodated in your currently slip, we will try to accommodate by making another slip available until such time your slip is available or you are ready to depart the marina.

In the event a temporary slip is made available to you, and you do not relocate the vessel, the marina reserves the right to charge you two times (2x’s) the original daily rate for each night you occupy the temporary slip.

This is necessary as at times, the marina operates at full occupancy and failure to relocate the vessel could negatively affect other guests.

The best superyacht marinas in Miami

One island park.

In Miami, everyone wants a piece of the waterfront. Condos, restaurants and private homes all try to stake claim on the ever-disappearing property by bay (and sea). Luckily, in a water-centric city like Miami, marinas take up a good portion of this prime real estate .

With dockage available in every waterfront neighbourhood, you can decide what amenities you seek, how much privacy you desire and which part of Miami you’d like to be based to explore this exciting city .

1. One Island Park

The One Island Park compound opened in Miami Beach in November last year and is designed solely for superyachts and is able to accommodate yachts measuring up to 244 metres in its deep water berths.

Visitors to One Island Park will enjoy a vast range of VIP concierge services, as well as a high level of exclusivity. The new compound was designed to showcase both the area and the best standards of service, meaning it will become an extremely popular spot for private owners, while its location means that clients can enjoy the thriving art scene, the beaches and the nightlife of Miami.

Island Gardens

The new superyacht marina Island Gardens Deep Harbour is situated on Watson Island and is capable of berthing 50 superyachts measuring up to 167 metres. The retail and residential aspects of the marina are not expected to be completed for the next two years, but the marina is fully operational with 1,524 linear metres of capacity with drafts of 5.4-6.4 metres deep.

Coconut Grove

Home to the U.S. Sailing Center and multiple yacht clubs, Coconut Grove is a hotbed for yachting activity. The 582-slip Dinner Key Marina, which survived the worst of the hurricane damage in September, sits right in the centre, and only steps away from the shops and restaurants of “The Grove.” The protected marina hosts yachts up to 38 metres with two metres of draft.

Sea Isle Marina

The Sea Isle Marina and Yachting Centre is a great place for yachts up to 42 metres to tie-up and be in close distance to what downtown has to offer with the Adrienne Arsht Center for the performing arts and the arena where the Miami Heat play right around the corner. There are also great restaurants right on site, as well as fuel and a ship’s store.

Miamarina at Bayside

Surrounded by shops, dining and even an outdoor auditorium, the Miamarina at Bayside is a lively marina. The marina has 130 slips and hosts yachts up to 60 metres and offers easy access to both the Atlantic through Government Cut and to Biscayne Bay and the Florida Keys to the south.

Epic Marina

Epic Marina is surely one of the plushest in Miami and despite being hit hard during Hurricane Irma, is once again capable of hosting superyachts up to 95 metres. In the shadow of Miami’s luxe Epic Residences & Hotel, the marina isn’t short on high-end amenities. Guests can enjoy sumptuous meals at on site restaurants Area 31 and Zuma.

Sunset Harbour Yacht Club

Set off the Venetian Causeway on Biscayne Bay, Sunset Harbour Yacht Club offers ample dockage outside of the hubbub of the Miami Beach scene. Catering to yachts up to 45 metres with 125 deepwater slips, the designated “clean marina”, an initiative started by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, has some great amenities including a pool and fitness centre. Fuel can be delivered and it is loacated right around the corner from a large Publix supermarket for easy provisioning.

Indian Creek Marina

Across from Miami’s iconic and historic Fountainbleau Resort on Collins Avenue, Indian Creek Marina at the Fountainbleau Resort (home to one of the best hotel spas to visit in Miami ) can host yachts up to 76 metres. In February, this waterway is lined with yachts during the Miami Yacht and Brokerage Show. The rest of the year, it’s open to transiting yachts and makes a great destination marina that is in close distance to Miami’s finest spas and eateries, as it's located right across from the beach.

Miami Beach Marina

In the south end of Miami Beach, the full-service Miami Beach Marina has 400 slips for yachts up to 76 metres. The marina offers direct access to Government Cut, a manmade shipping channel between Miami Beach and Fisher Island, which allows better access to the Port of Miami. Likewise, it’s only moments to the best of what South Beach has to offer; the beach and the best restaurants, nightlife and spas are just steps away.

Private Marinas

Yachtsmen seeking a private marina experience while in Miami should look no further than these havens:

The exclusive private island community of Fisher Island Club, across from Miami Beach, is ‘members only’, but sponsorship (from a member or the dockmaster) allows temporary membership for yachts up to 76.2 metres in length to tie up in the marina. And their owners can enjoy all the perks of the club, including the beach club, spa, tennis centre, hotel, restaurants and PB Dye-designed golf course.

Midway between Miami and Fort Lauderdale in Aventura, Turnberry Isle Marina Yacht Club accommodates 117 yachts up to 45-metres. Amenities include 24-hour security, a private ocean club, pool, spa, several restaurants, and two 18-hole Raymond Floyd-designed championship golf courses.

Explosion of a luxury yacht at the New Jersey Marina during refueling

Osama Ali

ALBAWABA - At Schooner Island Marina in Wildwood, New Jersey, a 12-meter luxury boat blew up during refueling. The explosion caused a large fire that burned for forty minutes and created a great deal of terror.

Explosion near Jewish temple in Southern France injures police officer

Witnesses compared the dramatic event to something they had seen in a movie. Initial sources speculate that the explosion could have been caused by gasoline fumes.

The boat was being refueled when it abruptly burst and swiftly caught fire. The event happened at around 12:40 PM local time. One person on board had to plunge into the ocean to escape the fierce fire that caused havoc at the port. Luckily, no major injuries were sustained, but the about 12-meter-long boat was totally wrecked and subsequently sunk.

According to witnesses at the site, the explosion occurred when the boat was getting gasoline. Even though neighbors used fire extinguishers to put out the fire right away, the fire spread too swiftly to be contained. When firefighters got there, the boat was too damaged to be saved.

After around forty minutes, the fire was eventually contained, although dense clouds of black smoke lingered in the sky for hours. From a distance, beachgoers could see the smoke, and some took pictures of the spectacle. Paul Daiber, who has lived at the marina for 25 years and keeps his boat there, said the scene was "like something out of a movie." The explosion's impact scattered the yacht's debris onto neighboring piers.

Many at the marina have expressed serious concerns about the occurrence, with many believing that gasoline fumes caused the explosion. However, the precise cause has not yet been determined and an official inquiry is still under progress.

SMOKE plumes filled the air after a yacht shockingly exploded at a packed marina.

The severely damaged yacht was being refueled at Schooner Island Marina in Wildwood, New Jersey when the fire broke out on Thursday, August 22.

A 40-foot yacht exploded and was engulfed in flames at a packed New Jersey Marina

The fire was responsible for "forcing one person on board to jump to safety," local Fox affiliate WTXF-TV  reported.

There were no serious injuries, but the boat sank to the bottom of the marina, according to the outlet.

Witnesses said the fire was the result of an explosion and that the 40-foot yacht was refueling when the fire began, NJ.com reported.

Bystanders attempted to slow the flames as firefighters arrived at the scene.

Wildwood firefighters received the call at 12:40 pm and "had the fire under control" by 1:20 pm, according to WTXF-TV.

However, swirling smoke clouds remained visible around 2 pm as police and fire officials responded to the incident, per NJ.com.

Though blocks away, beachgoers could see the smoke and took pictures as it soared through the sky and was pushed by winds.

Local police at the scene said the New Jersey State Police are heading the investigation, per the publication.

Patrons watched the scene from afar as the scent of gasoline filled the air.

Witness Paul Daiber has been storing his boat at the marina for 25 years.

At the time of the fire, he was fishing at the end of the deck opposite from where the affected yacht was moored, the outlet reported.

This was the first time he saw a boat explosion at the marina.

"It's scary," he told NJ.com, describing the explosion as a powerful thud.

He said debris from the yacht was sent into the air, landing on nearby docks.

Per Daiber, bystanders rushed to find fire extinguishers.

Firefighter crews tried drenching the blaze which turned into an inferno and was visible from across the marina, he told the outlet.

Other disasters caught on camera

Witnesses of many other disasters have caught the horrid scenes on camera.

"It just progressively got worse and worse until it erupted in flames," Daiber continued.

"A huge explosion. It was like something out of a movie," another witness told WTXF-TV, adding that she heard a "boom!"

She continued, "And the next thing you know, I saw the deck from the boot flying up in the air from one dock to another, and it flew over to our dock.

"Next thing you know, there's all black smoke, and next thing was flames.

"And everyone was just rushing down, trying to get hoses and fire extinguishers."

Her husband told WTXF-TV that the yacht was "too far gone" as bystanders tried to help.

Travel Tips to Kabardino-Balkaria: More than Mt. Elbrus!

If you’ve traveled to the North Caucasus before, there is a good chance you’ve already been to Kabardino-Balkaria, and you didn’t even know it!  Kabardino-Balkaria lies in the center of the North Caucasus region, is home to Mt. Elbrus, but more than that is a treasure chest of travel possibilities.  Here is our guide to traveling through the republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, or 9 travel tips to this beautiful land:

1. How do I get there?

Kabardino-Balkaria hosts a large number of both foreign and Russian travelers every year, and has an improving infrastructure able to handle the incoming masses.  Let’s start with the obvious.  You might be a mountain climber or skier coming to enjoy the slopes of Mt. Elbrus.  That means you’re likely arriving on an airplane to Russia.  Here are your travel options:

A. Plane – We advise you fly into the Mineralni Vodi (MRV) airport in the Stavropol Region, which is about 45 minutes from the border of Kabardino-Balkaria.  MRV is the largest airport in the North Caucasus, and has daily direct flights to and from all 3 airpots in Moscow (SVO, DME, and VKO), direct flights from St. Petersburg, and several international flight routes as well, including from Istanbul, Dubai, Greece, Tel Aviv, and Bishkek.  The MRV airport has a growing infrastructure and is the most obvious choice to fly into if going to Elbrus.  From MRV, it’s a 2 hr. drive to Nalchik, and a 3.5 hr. drive to Mt. Elbrus.

That being said, the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, Nalchik (NAL), also has a small regional airport with a daily flight to/from Moscow as well as weekly flights to Istanbul. As is to be expected in most smaller, regional airports around Russia, the service standard at a small airport like this will be minimal.  As a result, we recommend you flying in and out of MRV if able.  It’s a 2 hr. drive to Elbrus from Nalchik.  You can also fly into other regional airports which are 2 hrs. from Nalchik, such as OGZ in North Ossetia (Vladikavkaz) or IGT in Ingushetia (Magas).

B.  Car/Public Transport – If you have a car, are using a taxi, or are hitch-hiking your way to Kabardino-Balkaria, the region is accessible by a variety of roads and vehicles.  A major Russian federal highway E50 runs through Pyatigorsk into Kabardino-Balkaria, and can take you towards Mt. Elbrus, Nalchik, and deeper into the North Caucasus.  There are daily mini-buses, or “marshrutkas”, that travel to Nalchik from Pyatigorsk, Vladikavkaz, Grozny, and Magas, if you’re coming from a neighboring republic.  From the main Nalchik bus station, there is a marshrutka that goes to Terskol (i.e. Mt. Elbrus) daily around 12:30 pm; for that matter,  marshrutkas run daily into every valley of this beautiful republic.  For the seasoned international traveler, you can drive from the country of Georgia up the famed “Georgian Military Highway” through the heart of the Caucasus Mountains, cross the border into Russia at the “Verkhni Lars” border stop, and be in Nalchik in about 2.5 hours as well.

island yacht marina

Anyone traveling on their own should download the “Yandex” taxi app, which is Russia’s version of Uber, and has a very user-friendly app with affordable prices.  In smaller villages/towns where Yandex’s service doesn’t reach, just ask a local and they’ll direct you to a friend or relative who can taxi you where you need to go!

C.  Train – Kabardino-Balkaria is also very accessible by the famous cross-country Russian train system if that’s your preferred method of travel.  Almost all trains to the North Caucasus pass through Mineralni Vodi in the Stavropol region to the north, so make sure wherever you are coming from, Mineralni Vodi is one of the stops.  Despite Nalchik having a train station, the city is about 45 minutes from the main railway route that runs diagonal through the North Caucasus, and as a result it’s a bit convoluted to get a train directly to Nalchik.  That being said, the town Prokhladni is a regular stop on trains going to/coming from Baku, Makhachkala, Grozny, Nazran, and Vladikavkaz, so you can always hop off there and find your way by public transport or taxi.

2.  What are the best places to stay?

This list could get exhaustive, fast. 🙂  Let’s first look at an overview of the republic’s geography, followed by hotel recommendations:

A. Nalchik – This is the capital city of Kabardino-Balkaria, with a population of around 250,000.  Nalchik is growing and new, modern hotels are being built regularly.  Here are some of our recommendations:

-Modern and comfortable:  Azimut , Butik Otel

-Budget with less frills:  Hotel Rossia , Korona

You could comfortably spend a week in Nalchik, while doing day trips into Kabardino-Balkaria’s beautiful mountain valleys.

B.  Baksan Valley – This is the most traveled road in Kabardino-Balkaria, the road to Mt. Elbrus.  If you have questions about its safety because of travel warnings, please see our detailed blog here of the drive to erase any doubts or fears.  Needless to say, because of the draw of Mt. Elbrus, there are a huge variety of lodging options at the end of this valley, from 4-star to mid-range to budget to hostel.  Here are just a few we’ll recommend from our experience:

-Modern and comfortable 4-star-ish:  Azau Star , Kristall 139

-Budget with less frills 3-star-ish:   Laguna , Povorot

If you’re a mountain climber with your sites set on the summit of Elbrus, you’ll have to spend at least 3-4 nights at Elbrus’s famous base camp at 13,000 feet.  The “barrel huts” are not easy to book directly with, and we highly recommend you do your climb (and hence, have your bookings handled) through a trusted climbing company.  Here are two shelters at base camp we recommend:

-Modern and comfortable:  Leaprus

-Budget with less frills:  Heart of Elbrus Lodge

If you’re interested in climbing Mt. Elbrus and staying in these barrel huts, click  here  to see our climbing itineraries, pricing, and group dates.

C.  Chegem Valley – Chegem Valley is the adjacent valley to Elbrus’s Baksan Valley, and is famous for its beautiful waterfalls as well as being Russia’s top paragliding location.  The “ Paradrome ” has modest accommodations for those wanting to get to know this beautiful valley for a longer period of time.

island yacht marina

D.  Upper Balkaria, or Cherek Valley – This is another beautiful mountain gorge not too far from Nalchik.  There is an authentic lodging complex in Upper Balkaria called Tau-El, with amazing local food for meals as well.

island yacht marina

E.  Border Zone lodging – Several of Kabardino-Balkaria’s mountain gorges run into the border zone with neighboring country Georgia, i.e. an area that foreigners cannot enter without a special permit from the local government (often taking 2 months to receive).  There is a famous mountaineering lodge in Bezengi Valley, where several generations of Russian mountain climbers have honed their craft in the Caucasus Mountains.  Perpendicular to Baksan Valley (about 25 minutes from the base of Mt. Elbrus) is Adyr-Suu Valley, where there is a lodge for back-country skiers to stay, while trying their hands (and feet!) on the untouched snow of that valley.  Both these valleys require border permits for foreigners, but are possible to access for the more adventurous!

3.  Top cities to visit?

Most locals would agree that Nalchik is the main city of significance to visit in Kabardino-Balkaria, but let’s be honest, even more would say, “Just go to the mountains!”  Tirnauz is the capital of the Elbrus district, and is an interesting town to spend some time in, with its unique location in the mountains and place in Soviet history as a once-booming mining town.  The main thing to consider in visiting Nalchik and other cities in the lowlands, is the chance to experience Kabardian culture and food.  Whereas the deeper you go into the valleys, the more you’ll encounter Balkar culture and food.

4.  Best local foods to try?

There are 3 types of food that come to mind, when spending time in Kabardino-Balkaria:

A. Khychiny – This is one of the staple national dishes of the Balkar people, and what you’ll inevitably be served if guests of local Balkars.  It’s a thin buttery flat bread, sometimes cooked with fillings of cottage cheese, fresh greens, or potatoes.  It is often slathered in butter, but wow is that some tasty greasy goodness! 🙂

island yacht marina

B.  Shashlik – Shashlik is a MUST for any visit anywhere in the North Caucasus!  Most people would agree that it’s the national food of the entire region.  Shashlik is meat shish kabobs; while pork and turkey can be found in some parts of the Caucasus, lamb or chicken are the preferred shashlik meats of choice in Kabardino-Balkaria.

C.  Soup – No matter where you are in Russia, you’re sure to find a local soup that people love.  Kabardino-Balkaria is no different.  Especially in the winter months in the mountain valleys, there’s nothing better than to come inside from the cold weather and warm your body up to a bowl of hearty Caucasus soup.  Whether Georgian kharcho or local Balkar lakhman, make sure to try your hand at one of these soups with a side of fresh baked bread/lavash!

island yacht marina

5.  Top Hole-In-The-Wall restaurants:

Of course, for a republic of this size, we’re bound to leave at least a few great local joints off our list, but here are a few to get you started. ***Note:  Restaurants in the North Caucasus are much better known for their food than their service, so prepare for tasty food, but manage your expectations about service:

-Elbrus – Kogutai Restaurant at Mt. Cheget – While this isn’t a hole-in-the-wall restaurant per se, it’s one of many to choose from in the Cheget tourist village, and we have found them to provide consistently good food and service.  Kogutai has a nice interior, and maybe most important, an English-language menu with good pictures. 🙂  There also is a nice outdoor patio with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains.

-Nalchik #1 – Tameris Restaurant – This is a cafe with a relaxed atmosphere in the capital Nalchik.  Local tour company Elbrus Elevation has taken foreign groups there on multiple occasions and always had good experiences.  Address is ul. Kuliyeva 3.

-Nalchik #2 – Cafe-Bar Oasis – You have to know where this restaurant is to find it, but once inside, you won’t regret it!  There is a unique cafeteria-style ordering process, that includes several dishes being cooked on the spot once ordered.  You can sample local Kabardian dishes here.  The seating area is very modern and a pleasant atmosphere to have a meal in.  Address is ul. Kuliyeva 2.

-Upper Balkaria – Tau-El Restaurant – This is the restaurant part of the Tau-El Tourist Complex in Upper Balkaria.  Whether spending the night or just passing through, make sure to stop here for a meal!

6.  Must-See Sites

This republic is so chock full of “must-see” destinations, it’s impossible to narrow the list down.  Here are just a few suggestions to get you started: (***Mt. Elbrus is a no-brainer and we’re assuming that’s on your list)

A. El-Tyubu and Paradrome – This is an amazing area towards the end of Chegem Valley.  Many tourists visit the famous Chegem Waterfalls and don’t drive any further down this gorge, which really is a shame.  El-Tyubu is a picturesque Balkar village with several historical sites to see, including some ancient mausoleums.  The real gem of the area, though, is the Paradrome , which is Russia’s premier paragliding destination.  The combination of the scenic surrounding mountains and constant winds produces almost daily conditions to sail through the beautiful Caucasus sky.  Highly recommend!

island yacht marina

B.  Upper Balkaria – Also known as Cherek Valley, the entire drive to the actual village of Upper Balkaria is one big destination.  First, you can spend time at the 3 consecutive “ Blue Lakes ”, one of which is one of Russia’s deepest lakes with an underground spring.  Then, the drive itself becomes an adventure, as you pass by steep rock walls with a huge drop-off on the other side.  If you’re able to walk this part of the road, that is a bonus!  Once you’ve made your way through the valley walls, the region opens up into a beautiful panoramic view.  Many years ago, there were multiple villages in this region, but they’ve since been condensed into one main village.  You can see some of the ancient Balkar towers that their ancestors used to live in as well.

C.  Djili-Suu – Although hard to pronounce and not easy to get to, Djili-Suu is one of those places in the North Caucasus that people rave about that you “have to” visit.  It’s actually on the North side of Mt. Elbrus, and more accessible from the Mineral Waters region (2 hrs. from Kislovodsk).  The base camp for Elbrus climbers summiting the mountain from the North side is at Djili-Suu.  This area is famous in Russia for its numerous natural healing springs, as well as unique climate conditions that make for beneficial, long holidays for seeking a respite from their daily grind.  There are wide swaths of land available for camping, with probably the most unrivaled views of Mt. Elbrus in the North Caucasus.  Make sure to check this out!

7.  Off-the-beaten path destinations

island yacht marina

A. King’s Waterfalls (Tsarskie), or Gedmisht – Probably the valley in Kabardino-Balkaria with the least amount of hype is the Malka Valley, which is the northernmost valley and mainly runs through the Kabardian lowlands.  At the point where the villages end, though (Khabas), the asphalt turns into dirt and the hills start to rise, culminating with the incredible King’s Waterfalls, or as one friend put it, Avatar Waterfalls.  These stunning waterfalls are best visited in the early summer, when everything is lush green and the water flow is strong, with many streams of water flowing down the earth’s surface.  The different colors are incredible and it’s hard to look away.  Once you’ve enjoyed the waterfalls, enjoy a meal of shashlik at one of the nearby lunch huts.  Having an off-road vehicle is ideal to visit these falls, but worth the time and effort!

B.  One-seater chair lift at Elbrus – As the infrastructure at Mt. Elbrus has modernized, some of the more “authentic” experiences have gone to the way-side.  This is one experience still available, though!  From the 2nd (11,000 ft.) to 3rd level (12,500 ft.) of Mt. Elbrus (whether skiing, going to base camp, or just touring), there is a single-seater chair lift for 100 rubles each way (less than $2).  This is an amazing experience if you have the time.  It’s 8-10 minutes each way, and a surreal experience of the majestic Caucasus mountain range surrounding you, skiers silently passing you by underneath, and in general enjoying the silent expanse of nature all around.  The chair lifts are from the Soviet times and so it feels like something from a different era.  For mountain climbers, the newer group cable car gives better access to most of base camp, but several huts are pretty close to this chair lift, so it still may be a good option for you.

C.  Abandoned Mines above Tirnauz – Tirnauz is about 1 hr. from Mt. Elbrus, and a town everyone drives through to and from the mountain.  Although today it looks old and half-abandoned, it was a booming mining town in the 20th century.  About a 45-minute drive above the city with an off-road vehicle, you can see the remains of the mining operations.  Learning about this history combined with the breath-taking views of the Baksan Valley and even into Georgia, you’ll wonder why more people aren’t visiting this place.  This is a great spot to see eagles soaring in the sky, as well as admire the Soviet city plan of Tirnauz from above.

8.  What do I need border zone passes to visit?

In Russia, any area within 5-10 km of a neighboring country, without a clearly delineated border (i.e. in the mountains) is considered a special border zone, and patrolled by Russian border guards.  This area IS accessible to all Russian citizens with their passports, but is NOT legally accessible to foreign citizens UNLESS you have a special permit from the FSB (Federal Security Bureau).  These permits are accessible, either through a tour operator or local friend, but require you to submit your application 45-60 days in advance.

Areas in Kabardino-Balkaria that are worth a visit if you have a border zone pass:

A.  Bezengi Wall – This is at the end of the Bezengi Valley, and holds a place of lore among Russian mountain climbers.  Many mountain guides go through training in this valley.  Five of the Caucasus Mountain’ range’s highest seven peaks are a part of the Bezengi Wall, so you can imagine the draw it has for climbers. There are great areas for trekking and camping in this area.

B.  Adyr-Suu Gorge – This remote valley runs perpendicular to Baksan Valley and is about 25 minutes from the base of Mt. Elbrus.  It’s marked at the entrance by a relic of the past, a car lift from Soviet days that auto-cranks your car (and you) about 50 meters up the mountain.  After 45-60 minutes of driving on gravel road, the gorge opens up into a flat valley with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains.  The Adyr-Suu Alpine Lodge is at the end of this valley and where back-country skiers base out of during the acclimatization phase of their Mt. Elbrus ski tours.  This is truly a place where you can experience untouched powder!

island yacht marina

C.  Mt. Cheget (Elbrus) – Cheget is a neighboring mountain to Mt. Elbrus and where many climbers will acclimatize, both at its base and while doing some hikes.  It also is famous in Russia for its free-ride terrain for more experienced skiers.  Standard access to the chair lifts and mountain are available to all (i.e. mountain climbers don’t need to worry about accidentally crossing into the zone), but anyone wanting to summit the peak of Cheget OR visit the beautiful Cheget Lake needs a border permit.

island yacht marina

Foreigners violating the border zone areas is considered a serious offense in Russia; make sure to do your due diligence if wanting to visit one of these areas!  We highly recommend using a local tour operator and always traveling with a local person if visiting one of these areas.

9.  Any cultural “do’s” or “don’t’s” to be aware of

island yacht marina

Kabardino-Balkaria is a fascinating republic with a combination of traditional and modern society.  The more you interact with local people, the more you’ll see a mixture of Muslim faith, post-Soviet mentality, and ancient local traditions all wrapped together.

Kabardians mainly live in the lowlands (Nalchik, Baksan, and lowland villages), while Balkars primarily live in the mountain valleys (Elbrus, Chegem, Upper Balkaria, etc.).  There is a large population of Russians in the region as well.  Foreigners visit every area of the region regularly, and so local people are used to and will welcome your presence.

Come with an open mind to learn about these peoples, their traditions, and their land.  You won’t regret your trip to Kabardino-Balkaria!
