Photography from edinburgh and beyond, land yachting.

Its good to try something new and this weekend we did just that – mom and dad were up visiting and organised for use to go land yachting.  Now I’ve spend many a fun afternoon on West Sands in St Andrews, but this was something completely different.  Jamie and Guy run their own company called  Blown Away and were our instructors for the morning.   We watched (semi-apprehensively) as they set up the yachts and then it was over to us to drag them down on to the sand.  Some windsurfing and sailing experience when we were younger meant that we had a rough idea of what we needed to do and I was looking forward to getting into the seat and giving it a go.  Unfortunately the wind let us down and we spent the first half of the session pushing ourselves along! Luckily after a coffee and shortbread break, the wind had picked up a little allowing us to experience (temporarily) the fun of land yachting.  I’ll definitely be giving it another go!

I didn’t take many photos – too involved in trying to work out how mom was doing so much better than the rest of us – but here are a couple that I took before the session started.

Competitive Kate Middleton was in her element as she and Prince William went head-to-head in a land yacht race in St Andrews today.

The Duchess of Cambridge, 39, beamed as she steered the wind-powered go-kart down West Sands Beach - just a short drive from the university where she and William met as students 20 years ago.

Kate, who was dressed down in her favourite  £159 Longshore Barbour jacket, £310 See by Chloe boots and a £115 Campbell's of Beauly Fairisle Jumper, appeared unfazed by the strong winds and wet weather, and beamed as she shot past her husband.

At one point the Duchess's back wheel was lifted into the air by the force of the wind - but not even that was enough to stop Kate from smiling.

The royal couple were joined by a group from Fife Young Carers, which helps young carers maintain their well-being through a range of outdoor activities, workshops, and residential trips.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spoke to young carers about the challenges they have faced during the pandemic.

The Duke and Duchess also heard about the charity’s work to raise awareness of the role of young carers in the local area, including introducing a 'Young Carers Authorisation Card' scheme in schools, pharmacies and other medical settings.

Yesterday William and Kate spent several hours in Orkney, opening a new hospital in Kirkwall and visiting a marine turbine machine. They also stopped at the home of a local family, the Bichans, to hear more about life in Orkney over a cup of tea.

The visit is part of a broader royal charm offensive to help persuade Scotland to resist the demands of nationalists for independence.

Prince William arrived in Scotland on Friday and has carried out a number of engagements focused on the environment, young people and mental well-being.

The Duchess of Cambridge joined her husband on Monday and the pair have continued with a busy schedule of royal engagements.

On Monday the pair visited Turning Point Scotland, a social care charity in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire.

The couple learned about the support the organisation provides to those facing homelessness, mental health issues and substance abuse. Later in the afternoon they visited the pioneering Scottish Violence Reduction Unit (SVRU), and learned about the support it provides to community organisations across the country.

In the evening they were joined in the café kitchen at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, where they are staying, by Sikh Sanjog to prepare meals which will be distributed to vulnerable families across the Edinburgh community.

Over the weekend William gave a deeply personal speech in which he described the 'special place' that Scotland had in his heart, a country which he said held both some of his 'happiest memories' and his 'saddest'.

It was at Balmoral where he learned of the death of his mother Diana, in 1997. And it was at St Andrews where he met and fell in love with Kate Middleton.

Visit the Scottish restaurant where Prince William and Kate Middleton enjoyed a romantic date night for haggis or fish and chips

The Prince and Princess of Wales booked a quiet table at this contemporary Scottish restaurant on their return to St Andrews... although it is not known if they tucked into the Deep Fried Mars Bar Sundae!

The Prince and Princess of Wales during a visit to the University of St Andrews on May 26, 2021

Prince William and Kate Middleton famously met and fell in love when they were undergraduates at St Andrews University. Back then, they enjoyed meals at Pizza Express but on their last visit to the historic Fife town they went a bit more upmarket.

Ahead of a day of royal engagements in May 2021, the couple asked for a private table in the back of fashionable Forgan's, a contemporary restaurant with a Scottish twist. It is popular with celebrity visitors such as Rory McIlroy .

However, word of the couple's quiet romantic dinner soon got out and well-wishers gathered outside on Market Street. Manager Marc said at the time: "There was a crowd outside once they left but as far as inside goes it was quiet. There was no pomp and ceremony or fanfare, they were very nice and when they left they were very complimentary."

He was off duty when the royal couple arrived and was called at home by gobsmacked staff, saying: "Word certainly reached me we had guests come in." The manager said the restaurant was recommended to Princess Catherine by a society she was a member of when a student at St Andrews.

Two years later, Forgan's is still going strong on the buzzy restaurant scene in St Andrews – which gets more than its fair share of well-heeled visitors thanks to its status as the ' Home of Golf ' and the world-renowned university.

It scores four and a half out of five on TripAdvisor with almost 4,000 reviews, ranking it 21st out of 94 restaurants in the town (population 18,410, meaning there is one eatery for every 200 people permanent residents... not bad going!).

Customers enjoy a drink outside Forgan's on Market Street in St Andrews

One recent five star review says: "Between us we had the Arbroath smokie, the pork fillets, the burger, the steak pie and also the fish. Deserts, well really can't go past the sticky toffee pudding. Everything was delicious!…A great night all round and highly recommended!"

Another says: "This is a must eat place if you are visiting St Andrews. The food is always excellent, the atmosphere is great and the stuff are fantastic. If you can, go on a Saturday and enjoy the ceilidh, it's really good fun. Don’t just sit and watch, get up and take part, have a dance!!"

The restaurant itself says "we have developed a reputation for throwing a rip roaring ceilidh, hosting exclusive meals in our private Bothies and treating our guests to a dose of famous Scottish hospitality".

Forgan's offers traditional Scottish food with a contemporary twist

The menu features Forgan's Favourites, including Haggis, Neeps and Tatties (Creamy Whisky and Green Peppercorn Sauce, Carrot Crisps) for £15 and Fish and Chips (IPA Battered Peterhead Haddock, Chip Shop Chips, Garden Peas, House Tartare Sauce) for £18.

Other Scottish highlights include a Deep Fried Mars Bar Sundae on the dessert menu (Salted Caramel Ice Cream, Chocolate Sauce) for £8 and a Scottish Cheeseboard with Purple Grapes, Celery Sticks, Apple and Pear Chutney, Arran Oaties for £11.

On the day after their date night at Forgan's, William and Kate went land yachting on the beach at St Andrews and planted a tree at the university, where they chatted with students about their experiences during the Covid pandemic.

The land yachting session on the West Sands was hosted by Blown Away, a local company who are the only commercial land yachting company in Scotland, and host sessions in St Andrews and other iconic Scottish locations.

After the fire: St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club focused on revitalizing this coming summer

P ANAMA CITY — In November, the St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club building on Bunkers Cove Road was destroyed in a fire. Ever since then, questions have circulated around the community: How did the fire start? Would the Yacht Club rebuild?

The Yacht Club was up and operational for business within weeks of the fire. The Yacht Club is still taking in new members, as well. Members have joined the club even after the fire.

”The Yacht Club is in better shape than people would have imagined,” said Michael Wynn, 2024 commodore. “The staff members that we have are family to us. We believe and give to them and they give back to us.”

Wynn explained that one club member had this to say after the fire: “The clubhouse was just a building; the Yacht Club is about the people.”

The Yacht Club has discussed expanding its sailing center to provide greater resources for the community. The club expects the plans and renderings for the new club facility will be unveiled this summer.

Some of the staff members have left the club since the incident and others have stayed.

“Our staff is smaller now since the fire,” said Wynn. “We have less services being offered at the moment, but many staffers who left the club for other jobs have offered to come back once the club becomes (fully) operational again.”

The cause of the fire is still unknown. There have been different ideas and theories on how the fire started, but there has not been a definitive answer. But there was no foul play, Wynn emphasized.

”Right now, we don’t have a final number on what it’s going to cost to rebuild,” said Wynn. “We have architects and plans on rebuilding. We have members of the community who are donating services to help cut the cost (of our rebuild).”

More information about the club will be released closer to the clubhouse reopening. Wynn said the rebuild will both honor the club's history and heritage and also add modern touches.

Previous coverage: More details released as Panama City monitors St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club fire site

Wynn said the club's experience dealing with insurance after the fire has been good and the matter soon will be resolved. The experience was much better than the ones many people had after Hurricane Michael, he noted.

Wynn also is humbled and gratified by the outpouring of support and dedication from his fellow club leaders and all club members. He knew his one-year term as commodore, which began in January, would be full of challenges. But the club has rallied because the tradition and legacy mean so much.

"People care so deeply," he said.
