1970’s VIP Memosail

Before we can talk about the Memosail, there’s a few things we should cover about Yacht racing.

Since a yacht relies upon the wind for propulsion, beginning a race can be something of a challenge – you can’t very well line up all the boats and start the wind up after a short countdown. A yacht is already moving at speed when it crosses the starting line. The trick is to reach that line just as the race begins.

memosail yachting watch

An ideal piece of kit to have, then, is some sort of on-board countdown – allowing you to pace your sailing properly and begin the race without being penalized. This is where the Yacht Timer comes in.

Also known as a Regatta Watch or Sailing Chronograph, a Yacht Timer is designed to count down to the start of a race (as well as, you know, telling the time). While there are a lot of well-known watches with racing pedigrees in motorsport – we’ve talked a little about that here previously – there just isn’t the same level of awareness around Yacht Timers, save for the Rolex Yacht-Master II, and perhaps the Heuer Regatta.

In 1972, Valjoux SA filed a patent for a ‘ Pièce d’horlogerie à mécanisme de chronographe ’ – a ‘Timepiece with Chronograph Mechanism’ – which became the Memosail.

memosail yachting watch

The Regatta function uses a rotating indicator disk below the dial to display the countdown. Once the pusher at 2 o’clock is pressed, the orange sweep hand begins to move, and the disk moves anti-clockwise, changing the display in the dial’s aperture from yellow (10-9-8-7-6), to red (5-4-3-2-1), and finally to green (S-T-A-R-T).

memosail_watches_of_lancashire_Instagram

Of course, this being a vintage watch makes it difficult to imagine taking it out on the water for a race in 2017 – especially with quartz movements and digital smartwatches out there. But then, not everyone who wears a Heuer Monaco is racing in motorsport – you wear a watch like this because you appreciate the craftsmanship and the history behind it.

Have a question?

We have here a very special watch, the Memosail Regatta watch with a 10-minute countdown, flyback regatta module.  The renowned watch movement manufacturers, Valjoux, designed the caliber specifically for this watch to have this function

This innovative movement sits inside a 2-piece case that measures a huge 45mm.  It is a substantial case but a comfortable wear for both men and women.  We've paired the watch on the new 24mm Silicone Blue strap in keeping with the original , for a more sporty look but it looks equally good on leather.

The dial on this watch is incredibly interesting and functional.  The sharp striking dial has simple line markers with the Memosail name and logo at 12 o'clock.  The modified chronograph flyback function is controlled by the pushers at 2 o'clock and underneath at 4pm for reset (More information below ) the dial is the gorgeous bulls eye blue / white dial is in great condition 10-minute countdown indicator window which is visible through the five holes between 12 and 4 o'clock.  When the chronograph function is activated the countdown starts the flyback/seconds hand sweeps around the dial

  Extra Points

In 1926 Ebauches SA was created by three major watch companies (A. Schild AG, Fabrique d’Horlogerie de Fontainemelon and A. Michel AG), as a holding company for Swiss watch movement manufacturers. The purpose of this merger was to bring order in this chaotic industry, and to keep the prices of watch movements from falling any further. By 1951 Ebauches SA had bought as many as 75 movement manufacturers! Eventually in 1985 most of the companies that became part of Ebauches SA were bought into the Swatch Group under the ETA division.

In 1970 daughter company Ebauches Electroniques SA was founded, and that company filed in 1972 for the trademark name Memosail.

How the countdown function works:

Unlike the Lemania 1345 movement (see the Aquastar 1970’s section) the Memosail has two pushers for the countdown function. One pusher at 2 o’clock for start/stop, and one pusher at 4 o’clock for reset. Under the dial is a plastic indicator disk divided in 15 segments for 15 minutes, of which 5 segments are shown through a large aperture in the dial from 12 to 4 o’clock to follow the countdown. After a reset it shows 10-9-8-7-6 in black figures on a yellow background. When the chrono is activated the countdown starts and the orange sweep hand is set in motion counting the seconds backwards from 60 to zero. After 30 seconds the indicator disk moves half a minute, and again after 60 seconds, now showing 9-8-7-6-5. So, after the first 5 minutes of the countdown the disk is showing 5-4-3-2-1 in white figures on a red background. The process repeats and after another 5 minutes it reads START in green capitals on a white base.t is striking that whereas the indicator disk in the Lemania 1345 moves clockwise, in the Memosail it runs anti-clockwise! And whereas in the Lemania the indicator disk stops after the countdown comes to zero, in the Memosail it doesn’t. It keeps revolving showing again 10-9-8-7-6 after another 5 minutes, and so on. You have to stop the countdown with the stop pusher.

This watch comes fully serviced by our on-site workshop and with a 12 month, non-waterproof service cover.

What we think

We are very excited to have such a rare find available for our customers.  This watch was the first of its kind and it is from this watch that subsequent developments in regatta countdown watches have been made.  A real collectors timepiece with an incredibly interesting history!

Why We Love it

Purpose-built watches have captured the minds and hearts of collectors for decades. Many have found an enduring place in the pantheon of classic designs even though they might not still be used for their intended purpose.

During yachting regattas, so-called ‘yacht timers’ were equipped with special countdown functions that allowed a skipper to line up his vessel such that it would cross the start line exactly at the sounding of the starting gun. Of course, these watches also needed to be thoroughly water-resistant, first-rate timekeepers in and of themselves, and as a result, many robust, beautiful watches were developed by companies large and small.

This particular regatta timer, dating to circa the 1970s, is from Swiss watchmaker Memosail. It features a 43mm stainless steel tonneau case with a barrel pushers, an acrylic crystal, a navy blue Tritium dial with a grey chapter ring, a yellow a 10-minute regatta timing disc within, and a matching handset with a bright orange seconds hand.

Powered by the famed, manually wound Valjoux 7737 movement and paired to a stainless steel multi-link bracelet with a signed blade clasp, this colorful regatta timer is an awesome artifact from the pre-digital days of sport timing.

With a case design that feels comfortable on the wrist, this delightful yachting timer will surely have your yacht timing needs covered, whether you're skippering a yacht or watching from the safety of the pier, cocktail firmly in hand.

We know you’ll love it as much as we do!

Memosail Yacht Timer | 1970s

The Vintage watch collection at Clark Street Mercantile is curated by Montreal-based collector & watch expert Tarik Khan. Each vintage watch is inspected and in good working order.

The Memosail is a yacht timer watch from the 1970’s that is extremely unique -in design and history. Its unique blue dial is what captured our founder and lead to his first vintage watch purchase. The Memosail history stems from the history of the Ebauches SA company who, in August 9, 1972, filed to registered the name “Memosail” with the US Patent Office. Ebauches wanted to compete with other yacht timer chronographs like the Aquastar company with their 5-dotted timer with the Felsa regatta movement, the caliber 4000N. Leveraging their vast ownership of multiple companies, Ebauches utilized one of their other companies, Valjoux SA, to develop a movement to rival other yacht timers. Earlier that same year (1972), patent CH566052 “Pièces d’horlogerie à mécanisme de chronographe” was filed in Switzerland for the movement that would be used in the Memosail. The movement would be known as the Valjoux 7733/4 which was a modified Valjoux 7737. The minute - recording wheel is a 10 minute counter that counters backwards from ten. In regatta races, it is difficult for boats to line up on a “start line” because of the motion of the water and the danger of having boats so close together. In order to overcome this, boats are positioned in a starting area and a horn is blow or a radio signal is sent. Once this happens the racers have 10 minutes to get their yachts the start position before the race begins. The disc shows 5 pieces of the timing disc between 12 and 5 o’clock. Before the chronograph starts, it displays 10-6 in yellow. As it counts down, 5-1 appear in red and then the letters S-T-A-R-T will indicate when the race should start. The disc actually runs clock-wise unlike other chronograph movements. The disc will continue to rotate until the chronograph function is stopped by hitting the pusher at 2 o’clock, and reset by hitting the pusher at 4 o’clock.

Yachting Timers & Watches

At worn&wound we’ve long been fascinated by watches that were designed specifically for individual sporting events. This is part of a series on these unique timepieces.

Yacht timers – also referred to as regatta timers, yachting chronographs, or sailing watches – are watches specially designed and made for the countdown to the start of a sailing race. As you can imagine, starting a race on water, with entrants powered by the wind, is not as easy as lining up on a grid, Formula 1 style, or lined up like sprinters at a track meet, waiting for the starting gun. As we just saw in the recent America’s Cup races in San Francisco, the yachts (we use the term loosely in the case of the America’s Cup boats) are already at speed as they approach the starting line. The trick for the skipper is to NOT cross the starting line before the starting gun goes off. If they do, they’re penalized quite heavily (how and how much depends on the rules in effect for the specific race).

Daniel Hall 2

So some sort of a count-down timer is useful to the pilot and tactician. Horns signal the start of the countdown period and a skipper can start his yacht timer by the audible signal. He then has an on board measurement of progress to the start of the race, and can sail his yacht accordingly – hopefully to reach the starting line, at speed, just as the starting gun sounds.

Over the decades there have been numerous yacht timers and specialized chronographs produced by the world’s watch companies. Perhaps the most well-known yachting timer today is the Rolex YachtMaster, but there are others, past and present. Current and recent pieces include those from Tutima, Alpina, Atlantic, Omega, Panerai, and IWC, as well as electronic offerings from TAG Heuer, Suunto, Tissot and others.

modern_regattas

But the vintage timepieces – the regatta timers of old – are what really get our juices flowing. Sailing chronographs like the Heuer Autavia Skipper, the Regate (sold under three different brand names – Aquastar, Heuer, and Tissot), Heuer’s Yacht Timer (both wrist-mounted and stopwatch form factor), the Breitling Chronomat and SuperOcean (both in regatta timing trim), the Memosail (two are on eBay as we write this), Lemania’s self-branded Regatta Yacht Timer in handheld stopwatch format, and the wonderfully busy Wakmann.

Regatta timers have various ways of indicating the countdown time. There’s typically a multi-colored or numbered disc rotating beneath the dial with the colors or numerals showing through windows similar to a date disc. Five vari-colored dots – usually blue followed by red (Alpina, Regate), numerals against colored backgrounds (Memosail), or a separate chrono hand coupled with colored zones on the watch’s bezel (Tutima, Bretling, Heuer) or indicating time remaining to the start via a separate scale within the dial (Rolex).

Heuer’s Autavia Skipper was part of the legendary Autavia line in the 1970s. It featured the Autavia’s classic tonneau shaped case, a red, white, and blue countdown sub-dial at 3 o’clock, a small seconds at 10 o’clock, and date at 6. Chrono pushers were in the classic locations at 2 and 4, but the crown was positioned at 9 o’clock. The watch featured a 60 minute rotating bezel, and examples are often see with a blue dial & bezel combination.

heuers

Heuer’s Yacht Timer from the 1960s came in both a wrist-mounted version and a handheld stopwatch form factor. Color-wise, regatta timer dials are never shy, and the Heuer is no exception. This watch was basically a fifteen or thirty minute stopwatch (there were at least two versions) with a multi-colored dial formatted and printed for the countdown function.

Regate3-4

Aquastar’s Regate, also branded and sold as Heuer, Tissot and other brands such as “Racing”  in the early 1980s, used a Lemania movement with a classic five-dot/ window format, with a tri-colored rotating disc beneath the dial. five windows for five minutes, and once the timing started the colored wheel would progressively show thru the windows, changing them one at a time from blue to red to white (or silver).

racing

In the 1960s and early 1970s, Breitling produced watches in regatta timing trim in both the Chronomat and SuperOcean lines. The Chronomat featured a center mounted minute with a multi-colored inner chapter ring. The SuperOcean used the center-mounted totalizing hand with a multi-colored bezel. These black-cased watches featured Venus 178 or 188 movements, modified to handle the unique needs of a yachting chronograph.

BretlingSuperOcean

Lemania’s self-branded Regatta Yacht Timer is another handheld stopwatch format timer. The timing function is the familiar series of five windows with a colored disc beneath, but with the letters S-T-A-R-T replacing the third color (similar to the Memosail).

The Wakmann , yet another 1970s piece, looks almost too nice to have been a working watch. To us, it looks more like a dress watch for the Yacht Club awards banquet (but then, so does the current Rolex Yachtmaster II). The timer’s motor is a Lemania Caliber 1341 automatic with hour sub-dial at 6 o’clock and running seconds at 9 o’clock. Countdown chrono minutes and seconds are indicated by center mounted hands with orange tips. The display has a lot going on, with a date window at 3 o’clock, a white stationary chapter ring with days of the month, a multi-colored chapter ring with days of the week (moveable via a secondary crown at 10 o’clock – line it up with the correct day of the week for the current month), and a third multi-colored chapter ring outside the first two, this one with 15 countdown minutes in the first quadrant and a tachymeter over the following three quadrants. We’d be concerned about reading this in the heat of racing battle. That said, we love this watch for its center minutes totalizer, its unique display of day of the week and month, and it’s cool 1970s cushion styling.

WAKMANN_YACHTINGWATCH_4

With ultra-modern quartz-based timers available (TAG Heuer produced what was effectively a dedicated smartwatch, specifically to be worn by members of the America’s Cup Team Oracle, which relayed real-time data stream of boat performance to each crew member), and the inevitably harsh conditions of sailboat racing, these wonderful vintage racers have probably seen their heyday (one can’t imagine a skipper actually wearing a Rolex Yachtmaster II in a modern race). But their unique styling, and sheer mechanical timing abilities are works of wonder in any age. We’d wear one, even if it’s only to sail our desk into next week.

Memosail Regatta-Timer from the 70s

Memosail was made by the brand Memotime, founded in the 70s by Swiss watchmakers passionate by sailing. The movements to countdown the 10 and 5 minutes before a regatta starts was developed and patented by them under the sub-brand Memosail.

1992 Memotime was official sponsor of the America 3 on the America´s Cup.

2003 a new collection was launched after a take-over from the former owner CORUM to a young group of watchmakers to build watches for maritime sports with the Memotime patented calibre 883.

The 70s Memosails are direct competitors to the 5dot-Yachting timer of Aquastar, the Aquastar Regate with the Felsa 4000N movement. Different to this Countdown of 5 minutes showing throug 5 dots on the dial with white/red background from a disc, 5 red dots means 5 minutes and the the regatta starts. Memosail works with the modified Valjoux 7737, that shows after 10 to 1 a “START” in the cutout section of the dial.

This watch here runs a manual-winding Valjoux 7737 (17-jewels), it is a Valjoux 7733/4 with modified center chronograph wheel that uses 2-fingers for moving the countdown-disc every 30 seconds.

The Countdown runs from 10 to “Start” and then – run the race

There are different builds of the memosail – different in cases and colors on the dial and hands. We differ the standard editions and the editions with the “V.I.P.”claim on the dial.

1. Standard editions

memosail_editions_03

Memosail standard editions: round and square case, screwed back, 41mm w/o crown

There are different builds of this Memosail Timer, but all with identical movement.

Case – “ round case” – needs straps with round ends – “ square case” – needs straps with straight ends – first in chrome plated brass, later made of stainless steel

Dials (both cases) – white circle on blue – gray circle instead of white

Hands (different colors) – yellow or orange stopsecond – gray or white stick hours+minute-hands

Straps & bracelets – original steel bracelet with Memosail-buckle – dark-blue or dark-grey rubberstrap with Memosail typo

2. Special edition: Memosail V.I.P.

All V.I.P. signed dials are in cushion cases – but in 2 different styles: with straight case-sides to the bracelet and more round edges like you see here:

Lifestyle brand BOLDR introduces their Odyssey Regatta watch!

It’s now 2020 and still new regatta watches are created!!

June 3, 2020, new classic tornado by tack & gybe with automatic movement released, may 3, 2017, this website is dedicated to regatta-yachttimer watches., but what exactly is a regatta watch.

A regatta is a series of boat races, especially for sailing or rowing but even for powerboats. The term regatta comes from the Venetian regata (contention for mastery) or regatare (compete). Unlike any other competition at a regatta audible and visual signs are given before the actual start, instead of at the starting time. At first this was a 5 minutes period, later on 10, 15, and even 3 or 6 minutes. This countdown enables the competing yachts to manoeuvre the boat as best as possible to the starting line and time of the race.

Yachttimers, also referred to as regatta timers, yachting chronographs or sailing watches, are watches specially designed and made for the countdown to the start of a sailing race. They have a special feature to visualize the remaining time to the start, helping the helmsman to obtain the best position, reaching the starting line at full speed, just as the starting gun sounds!

Over the years various mechanical (and quartz) regatta movements have been developed. These movements are described in the brand list, underneath you see the caliber timeline.

I'm considering buying my second Russian watch and I'm wondering if this webshop is reliable. Does anybody have experience with them?

memosail yachting watch

Yes you are right, ruscamera and moscowwatch on ebay is one and the same account. Moscowwatch.com works from 2010, and I wanted to get my buyers have left their feedback on shop work. Some of watches you can find only on MoscowWatch. All the products are shipped worldwide FREE by Russian post with tracking number. If you have questions I or my assistant Vladimir will try to answer. Best regards, Igor

memosail yachting watch

I have ordered from them without problems.

memosail yachting watch

I cannot believe that some older Poljot models are still available (Poljot Lunar) including the 1 MWF Kirova or the Hanhart model too. I thought these stocks would be depleted by now?

The last remaining stocks of older Poljot models, some watches 1-2 pieces, and apparently no longer appears

I've ordered from them; quite fast delivery, watch is ok but had acrylic glas which wasn't mentioned. Not a big deal but I would have like to know this up front. The strap was delivered in the wrong colour and of incredible poor quality. Especially compared to Orient watches I have in the same price catagory. However, Igor is going to send me a replacement strap, in the right colour and hopefully of a better quality. We'll see..

memosail yachting watch

I've bought a few watches from Igor, both off ebay and through the website. Excellent service, no issues.

I've purchased from his web site and he had excellent communication, good packaging, product as described, etc. No problems had with MoscowWatch. Good seller in my opinion.

memosail yachting watch

Bought a Shturmanskie with a 2628 movement from him via eBay; shipped quick, well packaged. Brand new as advertised, came with the manual and still had stickers on the front/back. Another positive review!:-!

We would like to tell you news, that In our online store we have added some new models of watches and chronographs. And please to leave your feedback about shopping in this thread.

memosail yachting watch

I've ordered from him several times through a pal in Moscow. Everything went fine, including after-sales service and guarantee .

It looks like seller was shipping watches to US just 2 weeks ago, I am curious about what changed in such short time that he doesn't want to deal with US buyers anymore (see recent discussion about $150 shipping)?

US buyers can order and buy from moscowwwatch.com without any problems.

Just a few days ago I ordered a watch from moscowwatch.com, it's on the way now. Prior to shipping Igor sent me an e-mail to say that there is a small blemish on the dial (which was already apparent from the photos on the site) and to confirm I was aware and ok with it. Haven't seen many other sellers being this pro-active in their communication. So far only good experiences with this seller.

I've been browsing this dealer's web site and noticed him selling new 42mm Strela watches. I thought these were exclusive to Julian (poljot24.de). I curious how did these new Strelas make it to a Russian dealer?

Can anyone UK (or EU) based advise on the customs costs of receiving a watch from Russia ? Thanks

Crossing fingers helps mate. Highest cost around £80, many get though zilch. Always allow funds to cover and you'll be fine. Cheers.

Just got the Raketa big Zero. Everything good, I would say exceed expectations.

Received my Kirova Chronograph today. Very pleased with the watch. The seller replies to all emails very quick and the communication/service is great. Can only recommend it: View attachment 7359330

memosail yachting watch

I've purchased two beautiful watches from ruscamera without incident.

I bought several watches from them over the years, all are great so far. Shipping can take long time, but that's a complaint about Russian Post, not the seller.

memosail yachting watch

some countries might have only one option, anyway you can contact Igor very easy through his webside and he is always reddy to reply, greetings , wekke

Unfortunately, some countries have ceased to track packages from Russia, sent by Standard Int'l Shipping. Therefore, to prevent loss, buyers from this countries is available only more expensive to send EMS Express Mail Service.

We invite you to visit our Facebook page www.facebook.com/moscowwatch/

I just received a new Orion watch from Moscowwatch.com. A very straightforward and simple transaction. Information was sent promptly, and the shipment time was a lot shorter than I might have expected. I am very pleased with both the watch and the dealer. Bob

America's Cup Match Racing

Next week, when the 37 th Louis Vuitton America’s Cup kicks off in Barcelona with its opening ceremony, the contest that began in 1851 with a race around the Isle of Wight between the fastest British and American sloops (the yacht America won handily) will come back to Europe for the first time in 14 years.

The move to the Catalan capital from the 2021 event in New Zealand will make it more accessible to sailing fans in Europe, and even North Americans who want to view the fast, technical AC75 foiling boats in person. Barcelona has been preparing itself for a surge of spectators for the “return” of the Cup, which was held twice in Valencia, Spain, in the aughts.

The America’s Cup may be billed as “the race with no second place,” but it takes three months of racing and four events for one of five Challenger teams to win the Louis Vuitton Cup, and that winner will race Defender Emirates Team New Zealand in the America’s Cup final. The racing runs from August through October, and this year includes a first-time all-women’s America’s Cup as well as an event for the world’s best youth sailors.

Having Barcelona as a venue was a smart move, partly for the gorgeous beaches fronting the race course on the Med. But there is also the city’s magnificent architecture and sense of history as well as vibrant arts, culture and, of course, no shortage of Michelin-starred restaurants.

There are many five-star hotels in the area, but the smartest and most thrilling way to see racing is by water. The vessel options are wide-ranging—from weeklong superyacht charters to luxury suites on a cruise ships to day trips on sailboats with Michelin-starred cuisine. Many can be combined with on-land stays and even cruises to other parts of Spain as part of the itineraries.

One important note: Four zones adjoining the race course allow spectator boats. Before chartering a vessel, be sure to find out which zone the boat will operate in, because that impacts how close you are to the racing.

Here are 9 options to suit the most avid Cup aficionados or those visiting Barcelona who want to sip champagne and watch the AC75 foiling boats battle it out.

Superyacht ‘Resilience’

memosail yachting watch

Edmiston is offering charters aboard the 212-foot Resilience during the America’s Cup. The ISA-built superyacht, designed by Enrico Gobbi, features a mosaic-tiled pool, circular fire pit and a BBQ for a ringside lunch. Post-race pampering comes via the steam room, sundeck jacuzzi and gym, and there’s even a self-playing Edelweiss piano and projector for evening entertainment. The vessel sleeps 12 across seven cabins. From September 16, weekly charters start at about $645,000 (€600,000).

Explora Journeys

memosail yachting watch

The soon-to-be-launched Explora II looks very much like its sistership, the Explora I : onyx finishes, self-playing Steinways, on-deck Technogym bikes, a spa with a Himalayan salt room, Dunhill cigar den and a wine cellar boasting decades-old Chateau Latour. With 461 luxury suites, how was the Explora II chosen to become an America’s Cup viewing platform? The idea came from the top down.

“I love sailing and believe the Med is the most beautiful sea on earth,” Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of the cruise division of MSC Group, told Robb Report during a visit aboard Explora I in Barcelona. “We thought if only our customers could also experience [the America’s Cup], we can call it the ocean state of mind.”

Explora II launches in mid-September, with itineraries planned to coincide with the different Cup events. On October 6, the vessel will be in port for the Louis Vuitton Cup Final and Puig Women’s Races. Guests can take a walk to the official race village and experience its excitement before watching the races from their suites. A 10-night journey starts from $5,210 per guest.

The Almanac Sailing Experience

memosail yachting watch

Barcelona’s Almanac hotel has a romantic-gastronomic experience that offers guests front-row seats on a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45 sailboat with a capacity for 10 guests. Besides the racing, the package includes two nights at the hotel. The boat comes with the hotel’s branded slippers and Jimmy Boyd bespoke amenities. Enjoy a selection of customized Cava Bellinis from the pop-up bar. Chefs from the hotels’ restaurant will also serve up shrimp salad and fennel ceviche paired with organic Spanish wines. The boat can be chartered every Saturday from August 31 to October 26. The Louis Vuitton Cup round-robin starts on August 29 and lasts through Sept. 8. There’s also the Puig Women’s Race (first all-female America’s Cup in its 171-year history) and, of course, the America’s Cup finals in October. Prices start at $2,940 per couple.

Superyacht ‘C’

memosail yachting watch

For a majestic week-long cruise that incorporates America’s Cup summer races and possible side itineraries in Costa Dorada, Sitges and Formentera, Camper & Nicholsons’ expansive 177-ft C is the flashy option, defined by Minotti furniture, lacquered panels and a hamman. It also sleeps 12 in six cabins that feature a master and two VIP suites. Its chase boat also offers a great opportunity for side trips. Weekly charters from Sept. 18-October 31 run from about $513,000 or €400,000.

Sailing Yacht ‘Imagine’

memosail yachting watch

UK adventure specialists Pelorus offer a private seat on an elegant sailing boat seeped in America’s Cup history. Built in New Zealand by Alloy Yachts, Imagine is a 110-footer that served as an official viewing platform for the America’s Cup in Auckland, but it has also completed three global circumnavigations. Beyond its sailing chops, it’s a beautiful vessel, with a blonde, teak-lined deck, large salon and dining area, and three cabins for sleeping seven guests. It will be available from October 12 for the America’s Cup final. Pelorus is also offering to bookend the week with trips to Majorca and Ibiza. About $101,000 (£79,121)

Superyacht ‘Diane’

memosail yachting watch

Also available from Edmiston, the 141-ft Diane can accommodate 10 guests in five staterooms for the week. The interior is all about soft hues, featuring cream leather and white marble, boasting a bar and plenty of outdoor seating for watching the races. For the non-race legs, guests can take to the water via the large beach club, complete with seabobs and wakeboards. It has a Balearics license, making a hop to Ibiza or Majorca a possibility. Weekly charter rates from September 23 run about $150,000 per week (€140,000)

Black Tomato Cup Package

memosail yachting watch

Incorporating a city-stay, Black Tomato’s America’s Cup getaway includes a day’s private day charter to view the race, plus five nights at the Mandarin Oriental as well as visiting the regatta course and different bases of the America’s Cup teams for an insider’s look at the operations and technology. As a dayboat, its Bali Yacht Saxador 400 GTO can accommodate 11 guests. It sets sail from Port Olympic, giving guests a sweeping view of the city on one side and the regatta course on the other. The boat has access to the blue area (for preferred charter boats) on the front line. From $12,750 per person, based on two people.

Superyacht ‘Quasar’

memosail yachting watch

Camper & Nicholsons recently introduced the 153-foot Quasar to the charter market and what a great way to end the Med season than by viewing the America’s Cup. It has six cabins (including two master suites) that can accommodate 12 guests, along excellent outdoor seating, an upper salon that joins the aft deck area for viewing the races or dining al-fresco. The beach club has a large selection of water toys. Visits to scenic Med ports around Barcelona are also possible on the week’s charter, which start at about $232,000 (€210,000).

Superyacht ‘Kiawah’

memosail yachting watch

For front row seats on day charters in the blue zone (the third-closest area to the races), official charter partner ac37 Sailcharters offers different types of vessels and packages. The 110-foot Kiawah features a cocktail lunch on board, a specialized lecture from an expert sailor, and an AV system to follow the race in real time. From August 22 through October 11, daily rates are about $34,000 (€30,800) and during the America’s Cup finals October 12-27, rates move to about $41,000 (€37,400).
