New Member Incentive – The Olcott Yacht Club’s Board of Directors has approved a membership incentive of ½ price dues to “First Time” new Senior and Associate members joining during our 2024 season ****

Founded in 1920, Olcott Yacht Club is located on the southern shore of beautiful Lake Ontario.  Our members come from all walks of life and do not have to own a boat, or even be thinking about buying a boat to belong.  They spread the excitement of sailing and boating through the area through youth and adult sailing instruction, club racing, and various club gatherings and events.

WHAT'S NEW

The 2024 Youth Boating & Sailing Program has closed out another successful season.  View some Mike Taheri photos assembled into a movie by 3rd-year participant Abby Laubacker by clicking on the "OYC sailing" box.

N otice to Mariners Visiting Olcott Harbor: The entrance to Olcott harbor has been extensively modified.  This will not appear on existing charts as the work was completed in November of 2021. The photo below was made just prior to completion, but the structure is essentially the same.  Negotiating this may be challenging at night and in reduced visibility.

The Club was chartered, and incorporated, as the Orleans Yacht Club, Inc. on September 22, 1947. Founding members included Harry Snow, Edgar Downs, Helen Smith, Mrs. Norman Downs, Dr. Fred Raddin and Jarrett Blodgett, who became the first Commodore. The purpose of the Club as stated in the Charter is: "to encourage yacht building and sailing, to promote interest in yachting and aquatic sports, as well as social intercourse among its members, and to secure and maintain suitable buildings and equipment to accomplish these purposes."

The first Clubhouse was Edgar Downs' boat house located in the southwest corner of Town Cove and it is still visible today as a privately-owned guest cottage. The current Clubhouse was built on land donated by Henry K. Cummings of Orleans. It has been enlarged and modified several times over the years to what you see today.

The OYC actively encourages sailing and maintains a fleet of its own sail & power boats in order to promote its sailing programs. The OYC has run a popular summer junior sailing program (JSP) since 1947 and also offers an Adult Sailing Program to current members. It’s the home for Nauset Regional High School Sailing Team’s practices and regattas, the DaySailer Fleet 15 ’s races every Sunday, as well as being the host for the annual Sherborn Yacht Club's Yankee Duo Sunfish Regatta . Furthering its marine involvement, the OYC hosts the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s and the Cape Cod Power Squadron's boating courses every year.

The OYC's dedication to the "social interaction among its members" is evident from the variety of the many social activities throughout the year; these events include a progressive dinner, lobster/clam bake, a Commodore’s reception (every two years), holiday themed parties, weekly summer picnic nights, bingo/casino nights, dance parties, weekly suppers & Friday Night cocktail parties. All of which are enthusiastically participated in by its Members.

The OYC also supports a 501c3 charitable organization known as The Robert Radtke Memorial Fund, Inc. which provides sailing scholarships for the Orleans Yacht Club’s Junior Sailing Program.

MSC Cruises sails nearly two dozen beautiful ships from home ports around the world, but their inviting sun decks can be crowded, and you're likely to encounter queues for dinner, shows and guest services.

The trick to creating a more luxurious experience on this big-ship cruise line is to book a stay in the line's Yacht Club. This upscale enclave within MSC Cruises ' larger ships offers guests more spacious accommodations, butler service and dedicated restaurants and lounges — even coffee delivered to your room each morning, just the way you like it.

Because of the Yacht Club , MSC can offer an inviting experience for cruisers who like big-ship cruising but crave more elevated accommodations, dining and amenities. MSC Cruises was one of the first lines to introduce this ship-within-a-ship concept, along with Norwegian Cruise Line . Now other popular cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean , also have adopted it.

The Yacht Club section on several of MSC Cruises' ships offers gated access to semi-private dining, butler service and more, but it comes at a price. Find out how much you can expect to pay and what you'll get for your money.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

What are the MSC Yacht Club perks?

o yacht club

All stays in the Yacht Club include priority check-in and checkout; priority disembarkation and boarding on shore excursions days; free premium alcohol and Wi-Fi packages; a bathrobe and slippers; complimentary access to the Aurea Spa thermal suite; 24-hour concierge and butler services (dining and spa reservations, unpacking and repacking, morning coffee delivery, etc.); a free daily in-cabin newspaper of your choice, delivered; and the ability to change your cruise one time without penalty.

Yacht Club cruisers are also entitled to discounts of 10% on spa treatments, 20% on specialty dining packages and 40% on spa packages.

o yacht club

In addition, passengers booked in the Yacht Club have access to their own dedicated bar, lounge and restaurant, as well as a semi-private outdoor bar, pool and hot tubs, all on an exclusive sun deck. When ships dock at the line's private island, Ocean Cay Marine Reserve , Yacht Club passengers have private beach and restaurant access .

In their cabins, Yacht Club cruisers will find a pillow menu, memory foam mattresses, high-quality linens, bathrooms with marble floors, a specialty coffee maker, complimentary open minibar access, one gratis bottle of spirits (choose from a list of available options), free one-time snacks, 24-hour room service and nightly turn-down chocolates from Venchi, an Italian chocolatier that partners with the cruise line.

Which MSC cruise ships have the Yacht Club?

o yacht club

Thirteen ships in the MSC Cruises fleet have the Yacht Club on board:

  • MSC Bellissima
  • MSC Euribia
  • MSC Fantasia
  • MSC Grandiosa
  • MSC Meraviglia
  • MSC Preziosa
  • MSC Seascape.
  • MSC Seashore.
  • MSC Seaside
  • MSC Seaview
  • MSC Splendida
  • MSC Virtuosa
  • MSC World Europa

Upcoming vessel MSC World America (2025) also will have the Yacht Club.

The largest Yacht Club in the fleet is on MSC World Europa, offering 152 suites. The second-largest is found on the line's two Seaside EVO Class ships, MSC Seashore and MSC Seascape, which each have 131 suites.

MSC Yacht Club cabins

o yacht club

All accommodations in the Yacht Club are labeled as suites, even though they comprise some standard cabin types. The specific stateroom types offered will vary by ship, but in general, they range from windowless interior cabins and deluxe balcony rooms to Executive and Royal Suites with more space, walk-in closets and bathrooms with both showers and bathtubs.

o yacht club

New to the fleet with the line's World Class are 1,600-square-foot Owner Suites, which include multi-room layouts, walk-in closets, bathtubs and balconies, each with a whirlpool and alfresco dining area.

Also new are Duplex Suites, offering two decks of space, with the bedroom and bathroom upstairs and a dining area, living room and guest bath downstairs. These also include two private sun decks with loungers, one of which boasts a whirlpool.

How much does it cost to stay in the MSC Yacht Club?

o yacht club

As you might expect, the cost to stay in the Yacht Club depends on several factors, including cabin type, the length of the sailing and where you're going and when. However, in line with the rest of the brand's pricing, a stay in the Yacht Club is an excellent value when you compare it to stays in other lines' dedicated suite areas or to luxury cruise prices.

I priced out several sailings departing over the next two years on some of the line's newest and largest ships. This is what was available at press time. (Note: MSC Cruises' website will only allow me to choose a general Yacht Club designation when booking. That means a guaranteed suite within the Yacht Club, but you won't know what type it is until closer to sailing.)

  • 7-night Caribbean and Bahamas cruise on MSC Seascape: $6,538 (including taxes) for two adults, round trip from Miami, March 16-23, 2024
  • 11-night Bermuda, Canada and New England cruise on MSC Meraviglia: $9,958 (including taxes) for two adults, round trip from Brooklyn, New York, Sept. 25-Oct. 6, 2024
  • 7-night Mediterranean cruise on MSC World Europa: $5,118 (including taxes) for two adults, round trip from Barcelona, May 2-9, 2025
  • 7-night Mediterranean on MSC Divina: $5,858 (including taxes) for two adults, round trip from Kusadasi, Turkey, June 5-12, 2025

About Ocean City Yacht Club

One hundred nineteen years & counting.

On a summer evening in 1887, C. Howard Schemerhorn (who later became Commodore of the Ocean City Yacht Club from 1904-07) and others met with intent of finding a place where, "They could keep their boats in safety and not be compelled on Low Tide to wade out in the mud to get their boats." - Yacht Club Log Book-April 1916.

A location was found between 11th & 12th Street on Pleasure Ave. The name 12th Boat Club "was agreed upon and a boathouse built 65' long, 20" wide."

Family picnics were popular in those days, and two or three families would unite in a joint outing, fishing and clamming from the club. This location was the center of boating life in Ocean City. On a nice day, large crowds would gather at the foot of 12th Street. The club founders held the title to an undivided interest in the club property, and as owners died or moved away, the property fell into disuse and decay. When a storm destroyed the dock and washed the building offs its foundation, the club never recovered.

A certificate of Incorporation of the Ocean City Yacht Club was approved by Andrew C. Boswell, Master in Chancery of New Jersey on June 27, 1901.

The purpose of the club set forth in the Articles of Incorporation, was "to encourage and promote yachting on Great Egg Harbor Bay and the waters adjacent and to erect, build and maintain a boat house, wharfs, and buildings." The first clubhouse was located 6th and Bay Ave.

o yacht club

"A wide, flaring staircase approached the second floor on the North & South side. The foyer, with its Persian Oriental rugs and its many Trophy cases was something to behold! On this floor there were also the Board meeting room, a very large dining room, complete kitchen (I mean complete) and the Marine Grille. It was in the Marine Grille that the members gathered Saturday Night to dance, chat and pass a pleasant evening.

On the third floor was a ballroom where Junior Members held their weekly Saturday Night dances, Commodore George Kranich's orchestra used to play for those dances under the name "George Craig and his Merry Music Makers."

"The fourth floor had twelve bedrooms and baths, and in a special section, sleeping quarters for the Port Captain, dock boys, and kitchen help."

At the time of construction, a mortgage of $10,000 was created to secure the necessary funds. This mortgage was insured by the issuance of what was known as "First Mortgage Five-Percent Bonds." By their terms, they were due and payable September 1932, a difficult year to say the least. The Club continued to function even through a 1937 Reorganization, but nature won the last race, forcing its demise.

September of 1944 brought one of the worst hurricanes to Ocean City and the Old Yacht Club building was one of its victims. From the concrete floor on the ground to the wooden shingles on the roof, it was truly wrecked. World War II was on and there was no material or manpower to repair or replace the damaged structure. It was ordered torn down.

For several years after 1944, we had no clubhouse at all. Then in 1947 a new one-story structure, sometimes called the "Gas-Station Clubhouse", was built. By 1953 this building was expanded by the addition of a glass-enclosed porch facing the bay. All of this was paid for prior to the beginning of construction.

In 1957, feeling the pressure of its expanding sailboat fleets, the club acquired the triangular piece of ground which is still used today for the storage of sailboats.

o yacht club

The renovations incorporated many features which helped make the club more functional. Additional space was created for the ever-increasing membership. The new facility with its cathedral design included air conditioning, acoustics, kitchen facilities, junior room, Board of Governors meeting room, and a screened porch.

In 1992 long-time member and architect, Mark Asher, completed the design for a second floor and a major facelift of the club facility. Past Commodores Philip J. Kolea, Carl A. Posse, and Joseph R. Flesher brought this plan to life. This new building is ideal for our current needs and we all hope it will last for the next 100 years!
