Pandora Mk1 Review

The Pandora Mk1 is a classic, small slim-hulled yacht based on the Trotter-Pandora, a design by the famous Dutch boat builder, E.G. Van de Stadt. The boat is responsive and extremely seaworthy, offering a performance that matches many larger yachts. The open-plan interior includes four berths and a galley unit while the spacious cockpit accommodates three crew members. The Pandora Mk1 was inexpensive when new, and represents good value for money as a second-hand buy.

Who and what was this boat designed for?

The Pandora Mk1 was originally designed as an inexpensive day yacht. It is a quick popular cruiser, easily handled by a crew of two, and fits in a category between racing-oriented 22 ft yachts and cruisers of the same size where the emphasis is on accommodation, rather than performance.

What commentators say about this boat?

Fun to sail, easily trailed, and big enough to live aboard for a fortnight.

Despite its relatively small size, it's an extremely seaworthy boat whose ability matches many larger craft, particularly the fin-keeled versions.

Van de Stadt’s small boats were invariably beautifully proportioned, looking like scaled-down offshore yachts rather than blown-up day sailors.

In short, she was an absolute delight to sail – smooth, stiff, responsive, well balanced and, importantly, a lot of fun.

We were sailing a real classic, a well-built, good-looking little cruiser with a first-class pedigree.

Model variations

• Rydgeway Marine produced the Pandora Mk1, based on the original design by E.G. Van de Stadt.
• The company took over production in 1971 after redesigning the deck and coachroof.
• In 1973 they revamped the boat giving it a deeper keel and taller rig.
• In 1976, they gave the boat a retousse stern, replacing the transom-hung rudder with a skeg-hung rudder, and increasing the height of the rig.
• They offered alternative hull forms, including fin keel, twin keels or drop plate.
• Production ceased in October 1991.

What to look out for on a pre-owned Pandora Mk1?

If you’re buying a used Pandora Mk1, engineers and owners have reported some things to watch out for and potential faults that might occur on this boat from time to time.

• Second-hand models could be 20-30 years old, with problems of wear and tear. However, build quality was good.
• Keel bolts and bedding can rust and wear. Check when the boat is out for survey and replace if necessary.
• Check for damage and water ingress on the hull. Cleaning the hull, removing anti-fouling and spraying with a cellulose paint can help to prevent water ingress.

When buying a used Pandora Mk1, regular scheduled servicing and attention to some minor points will keep your craft in top condition.

Although I own the old version I actually prefer this new design as it has more details and a 3D look.

Purple, lilac and blue enamel is hand painted on the castle and Stitch’s back and ears while glossy black enamel features on his nose and eyes.

Last year I went a bit crazy and bought quite a lot of the Summer Collection! Now I am looking forward to complimenting my existing pieces with the gorgeous Glittering Sunset Murano, cute Scaled Fish and sweet Chest of Treasure charms and possibly the pretty Flamingo dangle too. The Freshwater Pearl pendant is really beautiful too and would look elegant on a simple chain necklace.

4 bodies found inside the Bayesian, Mike Lynch family yacht, amid search

Four bodies were recovered inside the Bayesian superyacht on Wednesday, more than two days after it sank off the coast of Italy , setting off an exhaustive search for six missing people, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch .

Two of the bodies discovered earlier on Wednesday were brought to shore. One body recovered was a heavily built man, Reuters reported.

Six of the ship's 22 passengers, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, went missing after the yacht plunged under the water just before 5 a.m. on Monday as a storm swept across the area. Americans are among the missing, officials have said.

The U.K.-registered yacht belonged to Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who was also on board and was rescued. The tech tycoon was recently acquitted on fraud charges after a year under house arrest.

Ricardo Thomas, the ship's cook, was found dead on Monday, according to the coast guard.

The rescue mission saw a diving team, helicopters and multiple coast guard ships deployed to search the water. Fifteen people were pulled from the water on Monday, and eight were hospitalized in stable condition.

A 'black swan event'? Experts puzzle over why Bayesian yacht sank

An investigation opened by local prosecutors into the cause of the disaster is ongoing. Experts have pointed to a water spout, a tornado over the water that can travel up to 120 mph, that formed during the storm, as well as the heavy weight of ship's mast, one of the largest in the world.

The 184-feet-long ship was made by Italian ship manufacturer Perini in 2008.

Lynch set off on the cruise late last month to celebrate his acquittal on fraud charges in the U.S. that marked a decade of legal challenges, the Associated Press reported .

One of his lawyers and a character witness for Lynch during the trial were also on board and vanished when the boat went down. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the four people found.

Here are the passengers who were declared missing.

Mike Lynch and Hannah Lynch

Mike Lynch, 59, is co-founder of Britain’s largest enterprise software, Autonomy, which was sold to Hewlett-Packard in 2011, and founder of venture capital fund Invoke Capital. 

Sometimes known as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was slapped with charges after HP said it had uncovered deceit and a major accounting scandal within the firm. He spent a year on house arrest after being extradited from the UK.

In early June, at the end of a 12-week trial, a San Francisco jury acquitted Lynch of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. He was also cleared on a charge of securities fraud later that month.

Lynch and Bacares have two daughters and six dogs, all named after engineering parts, according to the U.K.’s Sunday Times in a profile of Lynch from last month.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, was also among the missing. She was preparing to study English literature at Oxford University, according to the Sunday Times. 

Hannah is the younger of Mike Lynch’s two daughters, the Times reported . Mike Lynch told the outlet that his daughters had grown up with their father being publicly accused of fraud. 

Jonathan Bloomer and Judy Bloomer

Jonathan Bloomer is the non-executive chairman of both Morgan Stanley International and the insurer Hiscox, among other companies. Bloomer acted as a character witness on Lynch’s behalf during his fraud trial. 

Hiscox Chief Executive Aki Hussain told Reuters in a statement that the firm was deeply shocked and saddened and their thoughts were with all those affected. 

Bloomer’s twin brother, Jeremy, told BBC that he is processing the news and the family is waiting to hear updates.

“He was my elder by half an hour, so, it means a lot when you lose a twin brother,” Jeremy Bloomer told BBC. “We’ll still wait and see, so it’s fingers crossed.”

Jonathan Bloomer’s wife, Judy, is a psychotherapist of nearly three decades and former teacher. She specializes in anxiety and stress. She studied English language and literature at Homerton College in Cambridge.

Christopher Morvillo and Neda Morvillo

A lawyer with Clifford Chance, Chris Morvillo was among the team that represented Mike Lynch during his trial. Morvillo is an American citizen. 

He was an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1999 to 2005, and he worked on the criminal investigation stemming from the 9/11 terrorist attacks. 

Morvillo was a graduate of Fordham University School of Law and Villanova University. 

Neda Morvillo, his wife, owns a hand-crafted jewelry company under her maiden name, Neda Nassiri. The company’s website said she has been designing and making jewelry for over 20 years.

In a post on LinkedIn after the conclusion of Lynch’s trial, Chris Morvillo acknowledged his family for their support during the case. 

“And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo.  None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. 

And they all lived happily ever after…."

Pandora Yacht

The Pandora was designed by the renowned yacht designer E. G. Van de Stadt and can be traced back to 1962 when Van de Stadt devised the “Randmeer”, a dayboat with a low freeboard. The Randmeer is still raced today in the Netherlands with a very active class association.

Later developments of the Randmeer included adding a deck with a cabin thereby converting the boat into a cruiser, which was then renamed “Trotter”. The Trotter was handicapped with its low freeboard, so Van de Stadt designed a new faster hull with higher freeboard but still using the Trotter deck. The new boat was called a “Trotter-Pandora” and was very popular and successful on the Continent, with about 200 boats being sold. In addition the boat was also licenced to be produced in the USA, Australia and Japan.

In 1967 Grimsby Plastics, who built no more than 20 boats, introduced the Trotter-Pandora to England. Rydgeway Marine Ltd. of Lowestoft Suffolk then succeeded them in 1970 by acquiring the moulds and marketed the same boat but under a new name “Pandora”. This Pandora became known as the “Mark 1”.

In 1971 Ridgeway made two very minor modifications to the original Trotter deck. However, it was not until circa 1973 that a major redesign/modernisation was undertaken, with the introduction of the “International”.

The International had a deeper, higher aspect ratio fin keel and the rig was modified. This consisted of a higher mast and a shorter boom. In 1976 the last modernisation was undertaken with the introduction of the “700”. The 700 had now stretched to 7.01 metres (hence its name) with the introduction of a retousse stern and associated inboard rudder and an even taller mast and shorter boom. Production of the 700 ceased in October 1991.

Since the demise of Rydgeway Marine, no further Pandoras have been built and the total number of yachts produced is estimated to be in the region of between 850 to 900 (including the 200 Continental Trotter-Pandoras). Van de Stadt’s later developments of this design include the Splinter – built by SOS – and the Spirit 24.

Despite its relatively small size, it’s an extremely sea worthy boat whose ability matches many larger craft, particularly the fin keeled versions. The boat is noted for being responsive and light on the helm.

There are two versions of the Pandora, the MK1 and MKII and both models feature a choice of keel – fin, ballasted twin, twin with central ballasted keel or a centreboard which retracts into a stub keel.

The interior is an open plan design comprising four berths plus a GRP moulded galley unit comprising a sink and gimballed cooker. Headroom is generous at around 4′ 8″. The cockpit is over 7′ long accommodating three crew with ease.

The Pandora association is based in Abersoch, Wales and actively races Pandora yachts.

I have just bought a boat that had no title or hull number and it was hearsay that it was a “Trotter”. This boat does appear to be a “Trotter-Pandora”. If there is a hull number on these boats and anyone out there knows where a person can find it I would sure appreciate it. I am looking forward to a great time with it after reading its history. Thanks. I bought a new Trotter (drop-keel) in 1964 or thereabouts, and named her “Boomalakka”. The Trotter was later redeveloped as a Pandora, but the original one had a 3/4 forestay, the Pandora I think masthead. The boat sailed beautifully, but had a low aspect ratio main that looked odd by today’s standards. What a fantastic choice of picture to choose to show a Pandora at its best – it’s my boat ‘Panic’ an International racing in the Pandora Welsh Open. But marketing alone will not do it, adds Gasco-Buisson. “You can’t have a great brand without amazing products.” The CMO says she works closely with Stephen Fairchild in products — who Gasco-Buisson says is a master in translating marketing vision to product reality — to ensure Pandora’s designs represent what the brand stands for.

It’s difficult to ensure longevity and upward trend in profitability under an economic climate that has proven to be challenging for many brands in the fashion and beauty sphere. On the other hand, there’s a view that the affordable luxury market, which Pandora positions itself in, will stay strong as consumers continue to look for meaningful items that will comfort the mind and soul.

Despite the rising costs in silver and other raw materials — which Gasco-Buisson says impacts the brand directly, Pandora’s price increase has been kept to a minimal. “When you are committed to being accessible, you have to find every single way to avoid hiking up prices thoughtlessly. We continue to improve the ways we do things, and bring in some technology to help us.”

In addition to being vertically integrated from an early stage with production standard established and tightly maintained, Pandora is also able to retain a healthy level of profit thanks to its revenue being mostly generated through DTC channels — only a small margin of Pandora products are sold via third party platforms or stores.

“Accessible luxury is not just price, It’s both price and quality, hence the term luxury,” Gasco-Buisson says. Thanks to the sheer scale of the operation (Pandora produces over 100m pieces of jewelry on an annual basis), amongst other things, Pandora is able to offer unparalleled quality at accessible prices, whilst a brand producing “merely” a million pieces wouldn’t be able to do so.

“I believe that if you want to do a lot of good in the world, you have to be a viable business.” And a viable business Pandora is. According to accounting stats published by the brand, Pandora's revenue reached 4.2 billion US dollars in 2023, up from 3.96 billion in the previous year. “We are not here for the short term, no.” beams Gasco-Buisson.

So what else is left to do? According to Gasco-Buisson, still a lot. “Consumers, they move. Culture moves, aesthetics move, and we need to be relevant as a desired product.” There’s tons to do as we continue to expand by entering new geographies.”

“And you know, we continue to strengthen our customer experience. What it’s like to be the Pandora store and what it’s like to be assisted.” For Gasco-Buisson, retail is clearly an important component in ensuring Pandora’s market position on a global scale. Pandora’s new flagship store in Copenhagen, newly renovated and dazzling in the shade of coral pink, has an unmissable welcoming atmosphere and is easily one of the buzziest stores I’ve been to — filled with actual customers looking to buy, rather than to window shop.

Sustainability, a commonly used word by many big corporates, is part of a built-in culture at Pandora. “Things will get tough, yeah, silver will increase [in price] and we will still keep doing 100% recycled silver, even if it’s more expensive, because that is what we do. We will figure it out.”

“We’ll figure it out” is the general attitude I’m sensing from Gasco-Buisson, an attitude that’s 100% can-do laced with a great sense of ownership and accountability. And when asked what’s next up in her to-do list, Gasco-Buisson doesn’t hesitate: “Working towards making Pandora a full jewellery brand and a go-to choice for those seeking unique and meaningful jewelry.”

Pandora MK I is a 21 ′ 9 ″ / 6.7 m monohull sailboat designed by E. G. Van de Stadt and built by Rydgeway Marine Ltd between 1968 and 1973.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Five bodies found in sunken superyacht, officials say

So far four bodies had been brought to shore from the wreckage of the Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily, an official said.

ROME — Authorities have identified four bodies pulled from the sunken wreckage of a superyacht that sank off Sicily this week, Italian officials said Wednesday. A fifth body has been spotted but not yet reached, with a sixth person still missing.

Vincenzo Zagarola, an Italian coast guard official, said the four bodies brought ashore by divers were identified as two married couples: Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and charity trustee Judy Bloomer; and attorney Chris Morvillo and jeweler Neda Morvillo.

British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, were also reported missing after the Bayesian yacht sank early Monday.

The British-flagged, 183-foot-long Bayesian was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew members roughly half a mile from the Sicilian fishing village of Porticello when it encountered what authorities called a “violent storm” about 4 a.m. Monday.

Of the 15 people rescued, eight — including a 1-year-old girl — were taken to hospitals in conditions that were not life-threatening. The body of the yacht’s chef, identified as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan, was found during initial recovery efforts.

Lynch, 59, is known for founding the tech venture capital firm Invoke Capital and co-founding the tech firms Autonomy and Darktrace. He was recently acquitted of all charges after a decade-long U.S. fraud trial related to the 2011 sale of Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard; the voyage on the Bayesian, owned by a company controlled by Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was intended to be a celebration of his legal victory, Britain’s Telegraph reported . Bacares was one of those rescued.

Many of the guests on board had business or legal ties to Lynch: Chris Morvillo, a partner at Clifford Chance in New York, represented Lynch in the concluded legal battle.

It’s not clear exactly what type of storm struck the Bayesian, but weather data suggests it was probably a tornadic waterspout or severe thunderstorm.

Charlotte Golunski, a guest of Lynch who was rescued, described to Italian media holding on to her 1-year-old daughter , Sophie, amid the storm. “For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea,” she told Giornale di Sicilia. “Then I immediately hugged her again amid the fury of the waves.”

Lynch sold Autonomy, which was once England’s biggest software company, to Hewlett-Packard in 2011 for more than $11 billion. He was subsequently accused of overvaluing the company and was charged in the United States with fraud. He was acquitted in June.

The Bayesian was built in 2008 by Italian shipmaker Perini Navi, according to the SuperYacht Times.

The Sir Robert, a Dutch-flagged sailing vessel anchored nearby, responded immediately to help survivors before the Italian coast guard arrived.

The yacht sank to a depth of more than 160 feet. The first attempt by fire-brigade cave divers to search inside the yacht was unsuccessful, rescue authorities said .
