We are generally happy for a child over 12 to attend a course with their parent/guardian on our boats at any time – please call to discuss. Children over 16 can attend a normal course at any time but we must have the parent/guardian’s specific permission – please call to discuss. If you want a child of under 16 to attend on their own then they must attend one of our dedicated Children’s Courses.

Are the RYA Powerboat Courses available in South Africa?

The RYA Powerboat Level 1 Course

Popularly known as a beginner’s course, the RYA Powerboat Level 1 course is usually overlooked by aspiring boaters. Why? Because the RYA Level 2 course still covers all the aspects of the level 1 course. So, is it really worth taking the course? In our opinion, yes, it is; especially if you are serious about learning and reinforcing your powerboating skills as you advance.

So, what does the RYA Powerboat Level 1 course require? What knowledge does it provide?

As a beginner’s course, this course requires no experience or any other marine qualifications whatsoever. Candidates as young as 8 can take this course. However, children under 12 are only allowed to observe certain operations in the course. Regardless, it is a great course to introduce the young ones to the exciting world of powerboating.

The course contains the launch and recovery of the powerboat, preparing the boat and crew, boat handling, picking up and securing to a mooring buoy, leaving and coming alongside (another boat), and man overboard theory.

If the candidate can drive the powerboat under supervision, they will receive the RYA Powerboat Level 1 certification.

The RYA Powerboat Level 2

The direct successor to the RYA Powerboat Level 1, the RYA Powerboat Level 2 is deemed as the true entry point to learn powerboating. This two-day course prepares a candidate for launching and recovering, boat handling, securing to a mooring buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside (other boats), and man overboard (practical).

Candidates of age 12 and above can participate in the course. However, candidates under the age of 16 will be issued with an endorsement certificate only.

Upon completing the course, you will receive your RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate. The success criteria here is whether you understand how to powerboat efficiently under the right conditions. That you are aware of your limitations and of your vessel.

RYA Powerboat Intermediate Course

From the intermediate course, you will have to fulfil certain prerequisites and have prior experience as well. For the RYA Intermediate Powerboat course, the candidates must have the RYA Powerboat Level 2 license. Besides that, you require a basic First Aid certification and a VHF/SRC operator’s certificate . Besides that, you need knowledge equivalent to the level of Day Skipper Theory .

This two-day course is only for candidates of age 16 and above.

In this course, the candidate primarily learns how to plan a day cruise and passage making, along with elements such as boat prep and handling, piloting the boat, and man overboard procedures.

If a candidate can successfully plan and complete a passage, they will receive the RYA Intermediate Powerboat certification.

RYA Powerboat Advanced Course

The ultimate course for the powerboaters, the RYA Powerboat Advanced Course goes into the details of powerboating. As an advanced course, the candidate must have experience with navigation and chartwork to the level of Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore certification. Besides that, you will require a Basic First Aid certification and a VHF/SRC operator’s certificate.

The duration of this course is 2 days minimum, which includes 1 night navigation exercise. Candidates of age 17 and above can take the course.

This course covers important aspects such as boat preparation and handling, passage making, understanding responsibility as a skipper, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road, use of engines, emergency protocols, and night cruising.

If a candidate can successfully demonstrate planning and execution of coastal trips and return to a familiar port by night, they will receive the RYA Powerboat Advanced certificate.

Final Words

The RYA Powerboat certificates are valid in South Africa as well as internationally, thus making these certificates valuable. If you are a long-term resident in South Africa, however, eventually you will have to get the SAMSA Skipper license.

RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course provides the skills and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat driver and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. It aims to teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats. It focuses on low-speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations. This course is held over two 8 hour days.

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 License | What can I drive?

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 license is popular not only as a requirement for getting a job on a superyacht but as driving a powerboat for leisurely purposes as well. This raises the question, by the way: ‘what kind of powerboats can you drive with an RYA Powerboat Level 2 license?’ This article has the answer for you.

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 License

Before we dive into it, let’s have a brief overview of the license itself. The RYA Powerboat Level 2 license is considered the most basic license in the industry. If you are 12 years or older, you can apply for this license. However, license holders of ages 12-16 cannot drive a powerboat themselves without being accompanied by a certified supervisor. Also, to receive a commercial endorsement on your powerboat level 2 license, a candidate has to be age 17 and above.

The process of getting this license is simple. Simply take an RYA Powerboat 2 course from an RYA-accredited institution in South Africa, like Sail & Power SA. The training lasts for two days. If you perform well during the course, you will get your license at the end of the course.

What can I drive with an RYA Powerboat Level 2 License?

You can drive any powerboat up to 10m in length and of any horsepower with an RYA Powerboat Level 2 License.  

If your powerboat is bigger than that, you are not allowed to drive it. Why?

A level 2 Powerboat Course focuses on the very basics of driving a powerboat. Even though a Powerboat Level 1 course exists, the level 2 course is considered the most standard and basic one in the industry. And as a basic course, you only get to learn how to handle small-sized powerboats on familiar waters.

However, if you want to chart a course in deeper waters and/or drive larger powerboats, you will require higher qualifications.

What do you learn in a Powerboat Level 2 Course?

Taking a Powerboat Level 2 course requires no prior practical or theoretical experience. Hence, as long as a candidate is age 12 and above, they can take the course. This course focuses on the very basic aspects that are necessary to have competence in driving a powerboat.

In this course, you learn:

• Close-quarters boat handling
• Launching and docking the boat
• Planning speeds
• Basic manoeuvring
• Man overboard recovery

Who is the RYA Powerboat Level 2 License for?

This license is mainly for those who wish to learn the basics of handling a powerboat and also own a private, small powerboat. It’s for those who enjoy joining yacht clubs and participating in some watersport activities. If you are a person of leisure and watersports, we highly recommend you get a license for yourself.

Apart from that, people working in the marine industry, such as on a superyacht, are also required to have a PB2 license minimum. For such, you will have to get a commercial endorsement on your Powerboat Level 2 License.

South Africa Exclusive – The SAMSA Skipper’s License

In South Africa, you can also get the SAMSA Skipper’s Licence (Cat E) as an alternative to the RYA Powerboat Level 2 licence. However, for this skipper’s license, you will require 50 hours on waters1 in and signed by a licensed professional (such as another certified skipper).

The SAMSA Skipper’s Licence is not exactly equivalent to the RYA Powerboat Level 2 License. However, they are somewhat similar in nature as their permissions match in some manner. For example, both licenses will only allow you to drive or sail within familiar waters only, with the Category E SAMSA Skipper’s License having a bit tighter restrictions on the matter.

This is what makes the RYA Powerboat Level 2 license more lucrative to obtain. You require no prior experience. Furthermore, as you take this course, you also build up your sea hours; which are helpful if you are planning to get a SAMSA Skipper’s License in South Africa.

The RYA’s Powerboat Level 2 Course is a fun experience which allows you to drive powerboats of any horsepower as long as the length is under 10 metres. You can only drive within familiar waters close to the shore with this license. Getting this license is an easier alternative to the SAMSA Skipper’s License if your intentions are purely leisure or if you want to go abroad to work on a superyacht.

This course is suitable for ages 16+

You do not need previous powerboating experience (The Level 1 is not a pre-requisite for this course, adults should be able to start from Level 2)

Clothing: We will provide a buoyancy aid that must be worn.

• We advise all participants to bring warm layers and also a waterproof coat in case it rains!
• Shoes that can get wet as if it’s raining water can gather at the bottom of the boat (Wellies/old trainers)

Lunch: You will get a break 45-60 minutes for lunch each day

• Bring a packed lunch along with you or visit one of the many eatery places at Salford Quays. There is also a Tesco express within a 5 minute walK.

RYA Powerboat Level 2 Syllabus

Launching and recovery.

• Use of a trailer or launching trolley
• Consideration of launching and sea conditions, including hazards and obstructions
• Number of persons required to launch/recover
• Construction, width and condition of slipway
• Steep/slippery slipways, beach launching, lee shores
• Care of trailer bearings, hitch, lashings, ties, lights and winch
• Trailer parking
• Prepare the boat, lines, fenders, safety equipment, fuel tanks, lines and secure gear on board

Boat handling

• Loading: effect on handling and performance, effect on balance and trim, CE Plate and manufacturer's recommendation
• Displacement boats: handling ahead and astern, carrying way
• Crew members: minimum number in high speed craft, keeping a look-out
• Awareness of other water users, including effect of wash
• Steering, controls, effect of current or tidal stream
• High speed manoeuvring: planing, trim tabs and power trim
• Planing boats: propeller angle and immersion, shallow drive, high/low speed handling, tiller/console steering
• Carry out pre-start checks, engine starting and stopping
• Demonstrate the use of an appropriate length kill-cord at all times
• Carry out low speed manoeuvres including: turning in a confined area, effect of wind on bow and holding off. Demonstrate an awareness of the danger of flooding when going astern

RYA Powerboat Level 2 is a popular entry level course that provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat at speed and in close quarters. It also enables the holder to obtain an International Certificate of Competence (ICC). ​Courses are held on our Highfield 6m RIBs, (new 2022 - 2023).

This two-day course is based at our training facilities in Swanwick Marina, where you will spend most of the first morning. Once out on the water, the busy Hamble River provides ample opportunity to practice close quarters boat handling and we’re minutes away from the central Solent where driving at planing speed and high-speed manoeuvers can be taught in open water. You will also focus on man overboard recovery, and cover the collision regulations as they apply to powerboats.

Powerboat Level 2 is an excellent confidence-builder. Whether you’re planning to do high speed day trips with friends, or simply exploring rivers further upstream with the kids, this course equips you with skills and knowledge needed to be safe and have a good time out on the water in a powerboat.
