To produce the biggest collection of information on Birkenhead Star Yachts from the very early days, through it's heydays until 1990 with the Marion Street factory closure and to make it available to Star Yacht enthusiasts, owners and the public.

Anyone who would like to contribute to this venture whether it be by photos, catalogues or literature, please get in touch and let me know what you have. If you have photos and descriptions of the pre-war models, please send them in. All will be gratefully received.

History

As is recounted in the brief paragraph at the head of page 2 of the , Star Yachts was founded in the years immediately following WWI by Franz Marie Denye, a Belgian refugee who had fled Belgium at the beginning of the war. Originally a builder of full size ships, he decided that models would provide a livelihood for him and his family. This they did until the works site was compulsorily purchased to clear the site for new development in 1990. At that point the family closed the business. The factory had been demolished by 1991. There was a brief attempt to keep the name alive as the banner of a Youth Opportunity Programme project to provide work for the unemployed, but it soon folded. It is not known whether the products of the YOP project were the same as those of the original company.

Production over the years was extremely varied andvery large, as is shownby the regularity with which relatively recent examples appear on Ebay and in boot sales. Apart from the last catalogue and some instructional material of comparable vintage, very little documentation has survived and we don't know a lot about the pre-war production apart from very occasional models that turn up of which we had no prior knowledge. Over the years the range has included both clockwork and steam powered boats but these are extremely rare. It is thought that Star produced hulls for steam powered models sold by Mersey Models of Liverpool and probably that the steam plants used by Star were made by MerseyModels.

. .

Changes over time

Much of the variation in production will now be impossible to disentangle, but we have some small insights. Early (pre-1939?) hulls have a rounded counter stern, but more recent (post 1945?) models have a square stern. [early round stern] The Star trademark logo was originally a brass pressing nailed to the deck, but this was changed at an unknown date to the more familiar transfer. The last production run of yachts have blue sails. Names have been changed at various times, For instance SY7 yachts exist named both as Arctic Star and as Ocean Star. Whether this is a considered policy, or the result of a shortage of the appropriate name transfers is impossible to determine.

The catalogue is a trade catalogue. Most of the boats were sold through toy shops and department stores, particularly in seaside towns, but some of the larger boats were sold at one stage by Bassett-Lowke, who bought in a number of ranges of superior quality toy boats throughout their existence. There will be pages on Bassett's activity in the toy end of the market in due course.

You will see that the last pages of the catalogue contain many non-boat items suitable for sale in sea side toy shops. Many of these are in plastic. It is not known whether these were moulded by Star or bought in. The absence of any plastic components on the boats and the continued availability of items such as the tower style bucket suggests that they were bought in.

Catalogue and Instruction sheets

You can download the last colour catalogue, a price list and some sailing instructions.

Sailing performance

As the catalogue admits, the very small models are suited only for the bath. The smaller yachts struggle to perform, but the 'named' yachts generally sail well Western Star however, at 30 inches the largest yacht in the last catalogue, is a pig to sail properly. The performance is improved by moving the mast forward by an inch.

Potential collectors should be aware of Chinese copies of Star designs sold under the logo of Bosun Boats. These are not Star yachts in any sense and do not sail anything like as well as the originals.

See photos of some collectors with their genuine Star yachts.

Local News | Western Reserve Model Yacht Club event to draw sailors from several states, Canada

pen on calendar

The club will hold pairs “match races” from 9 to 11 a.m. followed by fleet racing from 9 to 3 p.m., according to a news release.

Boats used for both events will be Soling 1 Meter one-design RC sailboats, 40 inches long and weighing 10 pounds. They sail by wind alone — no motors or propellers — and races are won by skill and tactics, since all boats are essentially equal, the club noted.

Match racing is most well-known as the format used for the full-scale boats’ 37th America’s Cup series finals. The America’s Cup is to be contested this fall, in Barcelona, Spain, after a traveling series of fleet races to select the two finalists.

“Normally, we race as “fleets,” where as many as 16 boats race at the same time. Match racing is where just two boats race, over much shorter course.” Mike Wyatt, sailing director of the club, stated in the release. “We will have likely have as many as 120 pairs — “matches” — in just two hour, each race is about 5 minutes long.

“The America’s Cup is now held using foiling single-hull boats,” he added. “Our model boats are model keelboats, sailed in ponds and lakes, by one skipper using a radio transmitter to control the boat.”

The event concludes with a fleet racing regatta through the afternoon. The same competitors will race using a single start, and longer races, usually lasting around 10 minutes each. Fleet races use the entire 5-acre SPIRE pond, while match races use a far smaller area of around 250 square feet.

The Western Reserve Model Yacht Club races from May to October every Tuesday evening, as well as two Saturdays a month, also at SPIRE, 5201 SPIRE Circle in Geneva. Spectators are welcome at those or the Sept. 21 event.

For more information visit the club’s website at www.wrmyc.org. Interested people can also call the club at 440-478-8208.

Moscow says US involvement in Ukrainian incursion into Russia's Kursk is 'an obvious fact'

Tuesday, 27 Aug 2024

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov attends a meeting chaired by Russian President Vladimir Putin on operational issues, including the course of Russia-Ukraine conflict and the continuing conflict between Israel and Hamas, at the Novo-Ogaryovo state residence outside Moscow, Russia October 16, 2023. MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Tuesday that the involvement of the United States in Ukraine's ongoing incursion into Russia's western Kursk region was "an obvious fact", the TASS state news agency reported.

Washington says it was not informed about Ukraine's plans ahead of its Aug. 6 incursion into Kursk. The United States has also said it did not take any part in the operation.

Ryabkov said that it was no longer an accusation that the United States was involved but "an obvious fact."

"Washington's escalatory path is becoming more and more challenging," Ryabkov said, according to Russian news agencies.

"The impression is that (U.S.) colleagues have thrown away the remnants of common sense and believe that everything is permissible for them. Similar approaches are followed by their clientele in Kyiv."

Ryabkov said such action could lead to serious consequences in terms of Russia's own reaction and that Washington was aware of how Moscow could respond.

Russia has said that Western weaponry, including British tanks and U.S. rocket systems, have been used by Ukraine in Kursk. Kyiv has confirmed using U.S. HIMARS missiles to take out bridges in Kursk.

The New York Times reported that the United States and Britain provided Ukraine with satellite imagery and other information about the Kursk region in the days after the Ukrainian attack.

The Times said that the intelligence was aimed at helping Ukraine keep better track of Russian reinforcements that might attack them or cut off their eventual withdrawal back to Ukraine.

Luxury yachts and other myths: How Republican lawmakers echo Russian propaganda

A woman examines the rubble of a destroyed building

Two senior Republican lawmakers, the chairs of the House Intelligence and Foreign Affairs committees, say their colleagues are echoing Russian state propaganda against Ukraine.

Researchers who study disinformation say Reps. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, and Michael McCaul, R-Texas, are merely acknowledging what has been clear for some time: Russian propaganda aimed at undermining U.S. and European support for Ukraine has steadily seeped into America’s political conversation over the past decade, taking on a life of its own.

McCaul, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told Puck News he thinks “Russian propaganda has made its way into the United States, unfortunately, and it’s infected a good chunk of my party’s base.”

Turner, chair of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, told CNN that anti-Ukraine messages from Russia are “being uttered on the House floor.”

Reps. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, and Mike Turner, R-Ohio, leave a House Republican Conference candidate forum

For the past decade, since Russia’s first military incursion into Ukraine in 2014, Moscow has spread propaganda and disinformation in a bid to undercut U.S. and European military support for Ukraine, according to U.S. and Western officials.

Some of the arguments, distortions and falsehoods spread by Russia have taken root, mostly among right-wing pro-Trump outlets and Republican politicians, researchers say, including that Ukraine’s government is too corrupt to benefit from Western aid and that the Biden family has alleged corrupt ties to Ukraine.

Russia, in keeping with traditional propaganda techniques, seeks to make its case and tarnish Ukraine through a mixture of outright falsehoods, half-truths, inferences or simply amplifying and promoting arguments already being made by American or European commentators and politicians, researchers say.

The propaganda is sometimes spread covertly, through fake online accounts, or openly by Russian officials and state media. As a result, the origin of some allegations or criticisms is often opaque, especially when a certain accusation or perception has gained wide acceptance, leaving no clear fingerprints.

Early in the war, a false story boosted by Russian propaganda — that the U.S. had helped Ukraine build biological weapons labs — gained traction on right-wing social media and was touted by then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

Russia also is conducting a parallel propaganda campaign in Europe. Belgium’s prime minister said Thursday that his government is investigating alleged Russian bribes to members of the European Parliament as part of Moscow’s campaign to undermine support for Ukraine. Czech law enforcement officials last month alleged that a former pro-Russian member of Ukraine’s parliament, Viktor Medvedchuk, was behind a Prague-based Russian propaganda network designed to promote opposition to aiding Ukraine.

Here are some examples of Republican lawmakers using arguments often promoted by Russian propaganda:

Buying yachts

When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with members of Congress behind closed doors in December to appeal for more U.S. help for his country’s troops, some lawmakers raised questions about Ukraine allegedly buying yachts with American aid money.

Zelenskyy made clear that was not the case, according to Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, a strong supporter of arming Ukraine. “I think the notion of corruption came up because some have said we can’t do it, because people will buy yachts with the money,” Tillis told CNN. “[Zelenskyy] disabused people of those notions.”

Where did the yacht rumor come from?

Pro-Russian actors and websites promoted a narrative alleging Zelenskyy bought two superyachts with U.S. aid dollars. One Russia-based propaganda site, DC Weekly , published a story last November that included photos of two luxury yachts, called Lucky Me and My Legacy , which it alleged were bought for $75 million.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., a vocal opponent of military aid to Ukraine, in November retweeted a post about the alleged yacht purchase from the Strategic Culture Foundation, a Russian-based propaganda outlet directed by Russia’s intelligence services, according to the Treasury Department. The U.S. has imposed sanctions on the organization, accusing it of spreading disinformation and interfering in U.S. elections.

Another outspoken critic of aid to Ukraine, Republican Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, also made a similar claim.

In a December interview with former President Donald Trump’s White House adviser Steve Bannon, Vance claimed that members of Congress wanted to cut Social Security benefits to provide more aid to Ukraine, and that money would allegedly be used for Zelenskyy’s ministers to “buy a bigger yacht.”

“There are people who would cut Social Security, throw our grandparents into poverty. Why? So that one of Zelenskyy’s ministers can buy a bigger yacht?” Vance said. “Kiss my ass, Steve. It’s not happening.”

Donald Trump looks as J.D. Vance speaks.

The tale of Zelenskyy’s luxury yacht, however, turned out to be totally false . The yachts cited in the DC Weekly article remain up for sale , the owners told The Associated Press.

Two academics at Clemson University, disinformation researchers Darren Linvill and Patrick Warren, found that DC Weekly ran numerous stories copied from other sites that were rewritten by artificial intelligence engines. The articles had bylines with fake names along with headshots copied from other online sites. DC Weekly appeared to be a Russian effort to launder false information through a seemingly legitimate news site as part of an attempt to undermine U.S. support for Ukraine, according to the researchers .

Asked by reporters about Vance’s comments, Tillis said: “I think it’s bullshit. ...If you’re talking about giving money to Ukrainian ministers — total and unmitigated bullshit.”

Greene’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

Vance’s spokesperson said the senator was making a rhetorical point about how he opposed sending U.S. assistance to what he sees as a corrupt country, but was not asserting the yacht stories online were accurate.

Vance’s office referred NBC News to an earlier response to the BBC on the same topic:

“For years, everyone in the West recognized that Ukraine was one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Somehow everyone forgot that just as we started sending them billions of dollars in foreign aid.”

Enabling ‘corruption’

Russian state media for years has painted Ukraine as deeply corrupt, and has argued that the U.S. and its allies are wasting money and military hardware by assisting such an allegedly corrupt government.

“This is absolutely a line that they have pushed, and then once it appears in the Western ecosystem, other [Russian] media picks it up and it gets recycled back,” said Bret Schafer, a senior fellow at the Alliance for Securing Democracy.

This line of argument has gained traction partly because Ukraine does face a genuine corruption problem.

Russia’s effort to focus attention on corruption in Ukraine reflects a long-established propaganda method of using facts or partial truths to anchor a broader assertion or accusation, sometimes making a leap in logic, Schafer and other researchers said. Russia’s message amounts to: Ukraine is corrupt, therefore U.S. and Western aid will be stolen and wasted.

Schafer said it was ironic for Russia, a country mired in corruption and kleptocracy, to be leveling accusations about corruption.

Republican Rep. Mary Miller has said she strongly opposes more assistance for Ukraine because it amounts to sending cash to “corrupt oligarchs.”

“With Zelensky coming to DC this week to ask for more money, I will continue to vote AGAINST sending your tax $$ to corrupt oligarchs in Ukraine for a proxy war that could have ended in ‘22,” Miller wrote in a post on X in December.

The Illinois lawmaker also echoed another assertion that often appears in Russian media, that the Biden administration allegedly undermined efforts by Russia to avoid war with Ukraine.

“A peace deal was on the table that [Ukraine] and [Russia] were both ready to sign, but Biden said NO,” she wrote.

There was in fact no proposed peace agreement that Russia and Ukraine were prepared to sign before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, according to U.S. and European officials. As Russian troops massed on the border of Ukraine, Western governments urged Russia not to invade and warned there would be economic and diplomatic consequences.

Reuters has reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected a possible deal to avert a war that had been discussed with Kyiv by Russia’s envoy to Ukraine. The Kremlin said the report was inaccurate and has said Russia tried for years to arrive at an understanding with Ukraine.

As for corruption in Ukraine, Zelenskyy has vowed to tackle the problem, sacking senior officials in some recent cases. But some civil society groups have criticized his approach and Ukrainians say corruption is the country’s second-most serious problem, after the Russian invasion, according to a poll conducted last year.

In an annual survey, Transparency International said Ukraine made progress toward addressing the issue and now ranks 104th out of 180 countries on its Corruption Perceptions Index , climbing 12 places up from its previous ranking.

Ukraine is not alone among countries that receive U.S. and other foreign aid but struggle with corruption. Supporters of assisting Ukraine argue it would undermine America’s influence in the world and its humanitarian efforts if Washington withheld foreign aid from every country where there were reports of corruption.

Miller’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

The Biden family and Ukraine

Republicans have repeatedly alleged that President Joe Biden and his son Hunter have corrupt ties to Ukraine, and that they sought $5 million in bribes from the Ukrainian energy company Burisma to protect the firm from an investigation by Ukraine’s prosecutor general.

There is no credible evidence for the allegations. A key source for the accusations against the Bidens is a former FBI informant, Alexander Smirnov, who was arrested in February on federal charges of fabricating the bribery claims. Smirnov says he was fed information by Russian intelligence.

Republicans had heavily promoted Smirnov’s allegations against the Bidens, seeing them as crucial to a planned impeachment effort against the president that has since fizzled .

“In my estimation, that is probably the clearest example of Russian propaganda working its way into the American political system,” said Emerson Brooking, a resident senior fellow at the Digital Forensic Research Lab of the Atlantic Council.

GOP Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona cited the false bribery allegations in expressing his opposition to providing assistance to Ukraine.

“In exchange for … bribe money from Ukraine, Joe Biden has dished out over $100 billion in taxpayer money to fund the war in Ukraine. I will not assist this corruption by sending more money to the authoritarian Ukrainian regime,” Gosar said in a statement in October.

Gosar’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

Kamala Harris has largely avoided answering questions since her campaign began: She hasn’t participated in a town hall or given an extended media interview.

She and her aides say she will do one soon. In the meantime, I’ve worked with my Times colleagues to put together a list of 21 questions that could help the country understand how she would govern. Here they are, separated into four categories.

1. Madam Vice President, your agenda revolves around helping the middle class — such as offering a credit of up to $25,000 for first-time home buyers and increasing the child tax credit. You haven’t said much about some big related issues, though, including paid leave and universal preschool. Will you try to revive President Biden’s plans?

2. You support raising taxes on households that make more than $400,000. But these tax increases may not be large enough both to pay for your agenda and to reduce the federal debt , as you’ve promised. How would you reduce the debt?

3. Biden has been more populist than other recent Democratic presidents. He’s skeptical of free trade and has subsidized manufacturing. Are you as populist as he is? Or are there any policy areas in which you would return to a more market-friendly, neoliberal approach?

4. Biden has cracked down on monopoly power, and a central player in this fight is Lina Khan of the Federal Trade Commission, who has focused on Big Tech. Some of your campaign donors in Silicon Valley want you to fire her. Would you?

5. The Biden administration made an important change on climate policy , emphasizing subsidies for clean energy rather than taxes on dirty energy. This approach is more politically popular. Is it delivering fast enough climate progress?

6. You support the PRO Act , which would make it easier for workers to join unions. Recent Democratic presidents have supported similar bills — but failed to pass them. How would you give wary labor leaders confidence that the PRO Act will be a priority?

7. You’ve blamed corporate price gouging for high grocery prices . Many economists disagree , arguing that the industry has too much competition for widespread gouging to be a problem. Can you explain how your anti-gouging policy would lower prices?

8. The U.S. government has done little to regulate social media, and social media has contributed to some big problems, like polarization and loneliness. Now we have a new technological force: A.I. How would you regulate it?

Social issues

9. Would you support eliminating the filibuster to pass a bill that restores nationwide abortion rights ?

10. You have changed your position on immigration . You once called for decriminalizing illegal border crossings. Now you are an immigration hawk who promises to secure the border better than Donald Trump would. Can you explain your evolution?

11. Four years ago, you said , “It is actually wrong and backward to think that more police officers will create more safety.” Do you still believe that?

Foreign policy

12. Many Ukraine supporters think the Biden administration has been too cautious with its aid. Would you be more aggressive with the kind of weapons you sent?

13. Military analysts are skeptical that Ukraine can ever regain all of its prewar territory. How does this war end ?

14. It can be hard to see a path to peace for Israelis and Palestinians . How would you both alleviate Palestinian suffering and protect Israel from the enemies that seek its destruction?

15. The Biden administration initially distanced itself from Saudi Arabia but has since signaled that the U.S. needs the Saudis — much as the Trump administration believed — both to help moderate the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and to counter Iran’s aggression. What would your Saudi policy be?

16. Iran has made progress toward being able to build a nuclear weapon . If intelligence agencies told you that Iran was building a weapon, would you order a military attack? Or can the world live with a nuclear-armed Iran?

17. Taiwan is a thriving democracy that China evidently wants to conquer. Biden has said that the U.S. would fight to defend Taiwan if China attacked. Still, some experts doubt the U.S. would. If China did invade, what would you do?

18. Trump frequently criticizes U.S. allies for not pulling their weight. Do you think Western Europe, Japan and Canada spend enough on their militaries? If not, how would you pressure them?

Politics and more

19. Donald Trump can sound unhinged, telling frequent lies and rejecting basic democratic traditions. Yet millions of Americans — including more voters of color than in the past — support him. Why do you think so many people are frustrated enough that they find Trump appealing?

20. Your campaign spends less time describing Trump as an existential threat than Biden or Hillary Clinton did and more time ridiculing Trump. What do you think are the most effective ways to persuade swing voters that he shouldn’t be president?

21. Are there any U.S. presidents you particularly admire — besides Biden, Barack Obama and the typical answers of F.D.R., Lincoln and Washington — and why?

Trump visited Arlington National Cemetery to honor soldiers killed in a bombing during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. He criticized Biden and Harris for the exit. Harris said she mourned the soldiers’ deaths and called Biden’s decision to withdraw “courageous and right.”

Democrats sued Georgia’s election board over its rules letting officials conduct “reasonable inquiry” before certifying election results, arguing that the rules invited chaos.

Jill Stein, the Green Party presidential candidate, will be on the ballot in Wisconsin , the state’s Supreme Court ruled. She could pull votes from Harris.

Jason DeParle, who covers poverty, compared the Trump and Harris plans for housing, health care and food assistance .

Tennessee Expert Points Out Potential NC State Football Disadvantage

Matt giles | 5 hours ago.

NC State football

  • North Carolina State Wolfpack

Knoxville News Sentinel senior sports columnist John Adams was a veteran on the Tennessee beat when this current NC State Wolfpack On SI publisher was the sports editor of UT's student newspaper. That was back in 2004. Twenty years later, Adams is still at it. And on Sunday morning, he provided his insight into the NC State football team's Duke's Mayo Classic bout against Tennessee on Saturday night.

In Adams' eyes, No. 24-ranked NC State's primary concern against No. 15 Tennessee, fresh off its fine-tuned 69-3 domination of Chattanooga in Knoxville on Saturday, should be in the trenches, both on offense and defense.

After all, the Wolfpack struggled to overpower FCS opponent Western Carolina until late in their season-opening 38-21 home win on Thursday night.

While noting that Tennessee "might have gained 1,000 yards if star quarterback Nico Iamaleava had played the entire game against Chattanooga," Adams pointed out that NC State's relatively lackluster performance against the Catamounts may signal a long night in Charlotte for the Wolfpack:

"Before Western Carolina’s defense sagged in the fourth quarter, it held its own against the Wolfpack, which repeatedly failed to gain yardage between the tackles. Nor did NC State’s defensive front consistently have its way...That less-than-stellar line play doesn’t bode well for its chances against Tennessee...If the Wolfpack couldn’t consistently knock an FCS opponent off the line, how can it expect to thrive against Tennessee's deep and talented defensive front?"

Well, Dave Doeren's 12th NC State football squad must answer on the field when the Wolfpack face fourth-year Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel's formidable Vols in Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET Saturday (ABC).

Father of Israeli-American hostage on negotiations

Jonathan Dekel-Chen, whose son is being held hostage by Hamas, tells "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan" that negotiating with them is like "dealing with Satan." But, he added," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "has made choices to pursue this fantasy of total victory over Hamas, a terrorist organization, and no doubt, but this idea of total victory is a messianic one from his coalition partners, and not realistic."

Breaking: western michigan leading receiver ruled out for week 1 vs. wisconsin, share this article.

Wisconsin’s Week 1 opponent Western Michigan will be without its top offensive weapon tonight.

That is star wide receiver Kenneth Womack, who has reportedly been ruled out of the contest with a broken hand (per SB Nation’s Steve Helwick).

Related:  Wisconsin releases pregame injury report for Week 1 vs. Western Michigan

Womack led the Broncos in receptions (76) and receiving yards (691) in 2023, an output that led to a first-team All-MAC selection.

His absence is major news for a Western Michigan offense that enters 2024 with familiar faces at quarterback and running back, but will be operating under new leadership. OC Walt Bell is in his first season with the program after spending 2022 and 2023 on Tom Allen’s coaching staff at Indiana.

Western Michigan star wide receiver Kenneth Womack has a broken hand and will be out for tonight's game vs. Wisconsin. Womack led the team in receptions and receiving yards as a First team All-MAC selection in 2023. — Steve Helwick (@s_helwick) August 30, 2024

Western Michigan will now lean heavily on senior Anthony Sambucci, redshirt junior Malique Dieudonne and transfer Jordin Parker to lead the wide receiver room. The team should also heavily feature RB Jalen Buckley, a redshirt sophomore who excelled with 1,164 scrimmage yards and 10 touchdowns in 2023.

Wisconsin’s defensive strength is in the secondary. Womack’s absence should only heighten that advantage.

The matchup will play out when the game kicks off at 8 p.m. CT, 9 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1.

Panathenaic Stadium (Panathinaiko Stadio)

Leoforos Vasileos Konstantinou, Athens, GRC

Originally built in the fourth century BC for the Panathenaic Games, Athens’ gleaming all-marble Panathenaic Stadium (Panathinaiko Stadio) was reconstructed for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Returning to its roots for the 2004 Olympics, the stadium was the site of the archery competition and the marathon finish line.

Entrance to the Panathenaic Stadium includes an audio guide and access to a small museum exhibiting Olympic Games posters. Don’t miss the chance to snap your photo on the winners’ pedestal. Hop-on hop-off buses and many Central Athens sightseeing tours stop at the stadium and other top sights, such as the Acropolis, the Roman Agora, and Syntagma Square.

The Panathenaic Stadium is occasionally used as a concert venue—check to see what’s on during your visit.

Smoking, drinking anything other than water, and eating are prohibited inside the stadium.

Facilities include toilets (for a small fee) and a café (near the entrance).

The Panathenaic Stadium is located just southeast of the National Gardens of Athens (Ethnikos Kipos). Take the metro to the Syntagma, Acropoli, or Evangelismos station, then walk the short distance to the stadium.

The stadium is open to visitors year-round. The best time to go is in the morning or early evening, when temperatures are lower. Visitors can jog along the track in the early morning—just fill out the waiver available on the stadium’s website.

Stand 21 offers some of the finest views of Athens’ ancient riches. Climb to the highest tier, and gaze across at noble sights such as the Acropolis, Philopappos Hill (Filopappou), the Temple of Olympian Zeus (Naós tou Olympíou Diós), and Mt. Lycabettus (Lykavittos), the city’s tallest peak.
