Imagine traveling from Southwest Florida to Key West in less than four hours. Impossible? Not if you board the Key West Express at either Fort Myers Beach or Marco Island. While the high-speed ferry skims the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, you relax and enjoy the sunshine and scenery. This gives new meaning to the old saying, "getting there is half the fun!"

About the Key West Express

Getting to Key West used to be limited to either driving down the traffic-prone  Overseas Highway  or flying into Key West International Airport, which is not usually practical for those on a budget. Although the drive from Miami can usually be done in less than four hours, those traveling from Southwest Florida may find that the trip takes them all day.

But taking the Key West Express is as easy as parking your car and boarding the large catamaran. You may choose from traveling in air-conditioned comfort inside or soak up the sunshine on the outside deck. A completely stocked galley and bar are available as are large flat-screened TVs with satellite television.

The Key West Express isn't just a day trip. When making your reservations, you can plan to stay over in Key West and come back a different day—simply reserve your return date. When boarding, each passenger is allowed two small carry-on bags or pay an additional fee per piece for larger luggage. Coolers, alcohol, and glass items are not allowed on board the boat.

Booking Your Trip

Key West Express recommends booking your trip at least eight days in advance. This is not only to ensure you actually get a ticket, but also to make sure there is a boat from your desired location on the date you want. The Key West Express departs from Fort Myers Beach all year round and Marco Island, seasonally.

Be sure to bring your confirmation code and photo ID to the ticket window on the day of your departure.

Terminal Locations and Parking Information

The Key West Express departs daily from Fort Myers Beach (except when the calendar indicates no sailing) at 8:30 a.m. with ticketing and boarding beginning at 7 a.m. The terminal is located at 1200 Main St, Fort Myers Beach, FL 33931. The return trip from Key West to Fort Myers Beach departs daily at 6 p.m. with boarding beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Uncovered, paid parking is available at the Fort Myers Beach location. Travel time to Key West is about 3.5 hours.

The Key West Express departs from Marco Island seasonally from December through April (except as noted on calendar) at 8:00 a.m. with ticketing and boarding beginning at 7 a.m. During the summer the Ferry leaves from Marco Island on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the same times. The terminal is located at 951 Bald Eagle Drive, Marco Island, FL 34145.

The return trip from Key West to Marco Island departs daily at 5 p.m. with boarding beginning at 4 p.m. Uncovered parking is available at the Marco Island location free of charge. Travel time to Key West is about 3 hours.

The Key West terminal is located at 100 Grinnell Street, Key West, FL 33040. The company reserves the right to deny boarding to passengers who aren't aboard at least 30 minutes before departure, so be on time!

What to Expect on Board

The Key West Express strives to create a comfortable environment for all its passengers and offers air-conditioned interiors, sun deck loungers, flat screen TVs, and a full-service bar with burgers and sandwiches, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The company prides themselves on their airline-style reclining seats as well, so expect comfort.

Arrangements can be made to take along your bicycle as well, but space is limited so notify the boat ahead of time. Additionally, the crew can accommodate disabled passengers and their wheelchairs or ECVs.

The Key West Express even has space for household pets as well. But reservations must be made ahead of time. Pets also must be kept in carriers or crates for the duration of the trip.

What to Expect When You Get to Key West

The Key West Express docks at the Flagler Terminal, which is only about a 10-minute walk from Duval Street. Transportation is also available should you need to catch a taxi to get to your hotel.

Description

Looking for the perfect Key West tour to include in an exciting Miami to Key West day trip? The Key West Express presents one of the most popular Miami to Key West tours – a day that combines a scenic road trip along the length of the Florida Keys with an afternoon marine adventure aboard one of the best Key West glass-bottom boats. And you also get some time to explore historic Old Town Key West.

Arrange a free morning pickup from any hotel in Sunny Isles Beach, Miami Beach, or Downtown Miami. Then check in for the 7:45am departure, board the luxurious modern touring coach, and settle into a soft, comfortable seat for the scenic 4-hour drive down the famous Overseas Highway. Enjoy the view out the oversize windows and listen to the narrated tour, take photos, read a book, or just sit back and relax – our coaches are made for traveling in style. Plan on arriving in Key West rested and ready to play, enjoying an unforgettable fun-filled day, then returning to Miami at about 10:00 in the evening.

Following the Overseas Highway from Key Largo south down the Keys offers endless superb views out over the waters of the Florida Straits and the Gulf of Mexico. The highway crosses open water on 43 bridges that link 31 different Keys. At the southwest end of Marathon Key, the road climbs onto the renowned Seven Mile Bridge.

The Seven Mile Bridge has been featured in many action movies including Bad Boys, 2 Fast 2 Furious, and True Lies. Crossing the spectacular span gives a feeling of flying low over emerald blue water as the coach speeds along the elevated roadway. This world-class feat of bridge engineering stretches above miles of blue water before touching down on uninhabited Little Duck Key. The road then crosses 3 short bridges to Bahia Honda Key, the gateway to the tropical world of the Lower Keys.

Crossing the Lower Keys offers glimpses of old Florida as blue water, white sand, small communities, and expanses of undeveloped tropical bush country roll past outside the window. Around noon, you will arrive in Old Town Key West refreshed and ready for adventure. Waiting at the harbor with seats reserved for your 2:00pm departure is a modern version of the classic Key West glass-bottom boats that have been a leading island attraction since the late 1800s.

After casting off on a cruise over the crystal waters of Key West into one of the most biologically diverse marine ecosystems in the world, you are free to explore the upper sun deck, go out on the bow for some photos, hit the snack bar for a beverage and some chips, or use the clean, spacious restrooms. It takes about 30 minutes to run out to the reefs, and the high-tech catamaran design of the glass-bottom boat makes the ride smooth and totally enjoyable.

Specially designed to introduce visitors to the life of the reef while causing minimal impact on the unique coral ecosystem, this amazing vessel gives every passenger room for a great look at the underwater world. The innovative underwater windows deliver views similar to what you would see through a dive mask without the need to get wet.

An expert guide narrates the tour and helps you identify colorful corals, exotic sponges, and sea creatures including fish from over 400 species. The guide can also answer any questions that guests might have. It’s the perfect tour for families with small children, elderly folks, and anyone who has ever wondered what a glass-bottom boat is all about.

Take a Miami to Key West tour down one of America’s most scenic highways and put it together with a classic Key West glass-bottom boat cruise to make a day in tropical paradise that will be a highlight of your Miami vacation. Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Take The Classic Road Trip Adventure

Getting from Miami to Key West offers the chance for a classic road trip. The drive takes about three and a half hours, maybe less in light traffic. But why drive straight there when there are so many fantastic adventures en route?

We have personally done this drive over ten times. It’s become a favorite with all the guests I get from England.  This guide will share our favorite experiences and essential stops in the Florida Keys!

If you’re traveling in an R.V., you may want to learn about the best R.V. resorts in Florida .  Keys Palms Luxury R.V. resort in Key Largo is one of the top spots to camp in your R.V.

RV Resorts In FL

Key Largo will be your first stop en route from Miami to Key West. It’s approximately 69 miles from Miami to Key Largo, and the drive will take about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Do yourself a favor. Take the slightly longer Card Sound toll route, and stop at Alabama Jack’s Bar.

This little biker bar is a hidden treasure off the beaten path but worth the stop! Here you’ll enjoy a tasty lunch and a cold beer in quaint surroundings with epic views. Watch boats cruise by while listening to live country music, and think about where to stop next on your road trip .

How is the drive from Miami to Key West, and is it worth it?

Is it safe to drive from Miami to Key West?

There is no question that the road from Miami to Key West is a famous tourist drive and is very safe. Prepare for a great road trip by driving safely, taking your time, and enjoying your time!

Use Mile Makers For a Road Trip

First, most attraction locations on a Miami to Key West Road Trip are near a certain Mile Marker.

The Florida Keys officially begin at Mile Marker 118! The trip to Key West is just over 100 miles from here.

The road ends at Mile Marker 0, Key West’s southernmost end. As you travel between those mile markers, you’ll encounter many amazing stop-offs with tons of fun and adventure.

The Florida Keys comprise hundreds of small islands that make up Key West. The islands are all connected by Highway 1 or “The Overseas Highway.”

Get There By Catamaran

However you choose to get to Key West, a day on the water is beckoning. So if you’ve never tried catamaran sailing , this is the ideal time to do it. Whether you want to explore the surrounding beaches or travel down the southernmost point of the USA, a catamaran is a way to go.

With its twin hulls offering far more stability than a single-hulled yacht, even less experienced sailors will feel at ease. But with the option of a skipper and crew, you can leave the navigation to them and enjoy the magnificent coastal views.

Miami To Key West

A catamaran charter is not only a relaxing way to get to know Key West and its surroundings. Key West is also an ideal spot to indulge in all your favorite watersports.

Go snorkeling and explore Key West’s magnificent reefs. Like the US Alligator, most of them were created by sinking ships over the years. Her sunken remains are 100 yards off the shore of the Alligator lighthouse, and this ship is now home to coral and teeming with sea life.

Get There By Luxury Coach

If you didn’t drive to Key West from Miami, you’ve got some options for your return trip. Once it’s time to head back to Miami, how are you planning on getting there? A shuttle from Miami to Key West is an affordable and comfortable option if you don’t want to fly both ways.

The Keys Shuttle trip from Key West to Miami International Airport typically takes 4 hours. That’s roughly the same time it would take you if you hired a vehicle for the drive back. But let’s be honest; you enjoy the scenery more when you’re not sitting in the driver’s seat.

Solo travelers especially will prefer this mode of transport for the return trip. With a luxury coach ride , you’ll still have the option of stopping off at other Keys and doing more sightseeing.

If you didn’t get to stop at the many museums, parks, and other attractions on your trip to Key West, there’s hope. You can still visit them on your return journey to Miami.

Road trips are always great, but you’ll get to Key West from Miami or the reverse much faster if you fly. Flights from Miami to Key West usually take about an hour or a bit less. Get on an early flight from Miami Airport to Key West International Airport, and you’ll have plenty of time to see the sights.

You won’t even have to stray far from the airport for all the fun to begin. Take to the sky for the best sights, with a slightly different mode of transport. Fly-KeyWest Helicopter Tours is on Roosevelt Boulevard and operates out of Key West Airport.

Some parts of the island are only accessible from the sea or the air. A short helicopter tour offers the thrill of seeing all Key West offers from a different perspective.

This helicopter tour will allow you to spot dolphins, sea turtles, and stingrays without getting out on the water. It’s had rave reviews from countless satisfied customers and is an exciting vacation option for both solo travelers and couples.

The everglades – florida city.

You’ll want to try an Everglades boat tour before continuing your trip. Everglades tour organizers usually offer short kayaking and raft tours, too. Or, take an airboat ride.

Once you get back on the road, driving the 48 miles from Key Largo to Marathon, your next main stop will take about an hour or so.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park – Key Largo

The first underwater state park in the United States covers approximately 70 square nautical miles. In addition to kayaking through mangrove swamps and relaxing in hammocks, there are many exciting things to see beneath the park’s surface.

The underwater world is filled with coral reefs, sea life, sculptures, and coral. You’ll also find some of the same sea life in the park’s 30,000-gallon saltwater aquarium and the natural wonders.

Lignumvitae Key State Park – Islamorada

Most of Florida’s Upper Keys used virgin tropical hardwood hammocks; these forests have been lost to development on other islands. In 1919, wealthy Miami chemist William J. Matheson purchased the island and built a caretaker’s house with a windmill for electricity and a cistern for rainwater.

This island forest’s visitor center is located in his hideaway today. From Friday through Sunday, ranger-led tours are given twice daily. Private boats or tour boats are the only way to access the park. You can rent a boat or kayak from Robbie’s Marina or take a tour boat. Near Mile Marker 78.5 on U.S. 1.

Indian Key Historic State Park – Islamorada

A lucrative business on the tiny island salvaged cargo from shipwrecks in the Florida Keys at the time.

Visitors to the park can swim, sunbathe, and hike here, accessible only by boat. Rental kayaks are available from a local charter company.

Curry Hammock State Park – Marathon

A group of islands makes up this park in the Middle Keys that provide public access to swimming, a playground, picnic tables, grills, and showers. One of the largest populations of thatch palms in the United States is found on these tropical islands’ hardwood hammocks. Tropical wildlife relies on mangrove swamps, seagrass beds, and wetlands for habitat.

Curry Hammock State Park

Visiting Florida’s state parks from 8 a.m. to sundown every day of the year is possible.

Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park – Islamorada

Built around the early 1900s, Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railroad was built using limestone from Key Largo and fossilized coral. Keystone was produced at the quarry until the 1960s after the railroad was built.

Today’s visitors can observe cross sections of ancient coral on the eight-foot-high quarry walls and learn about the quarry’s history and operation. The park preserves samples of quarry machinery.

Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park

Five short, self-guiding trails allow visitors to enjoy the island’s natural attributes. The park has picnic tables. There are educational exhibits about the history of this site at the Visitor Center, which is open Friday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Visitor Center is located at mile marker 85.5 on Windley Key near Islamorada.

Long Key State Park – Layton

The Spanish named Cayo Vivora, or Rattlesnake Key, because its shape resembles a snake with its jaws wide open. Long Key was the site of a luxurious fishing  resort destroyed by a hurricane in 1935.

There are two land-based trails and a chain of lagoons for visitors to explore on this island. A panoramic view of the island and its profusion of plant and animal life can be gained from the observation tower at the end of the Golden Orb Trail, which leads visitors through five natural communities.

Here you can find some of the best bonefishing in the Keys. Camping facilities overlook the Atlantic Ocean. 67400 Overseas Highway, Mile Marker 67.5.

Park Passes

There’s so much to see and do en route and in Marathon. Get a US Park Pass before leaving so you won’t miss out on the best attractions.

If you’re traveling as a family, your kids will love visiting some U.S. National Parks. A road trip with stops that are both fun and  educational – it’s a great combo.

Bridges For The Best Photo Ops

As with every road trip, the best fun along the way is not the scenery but the stops. So include some photo opportunities on your next part of the journey. You want to send amazing pics to your friends, right?

Your road trip will take you over several bridges, including the Seven Mile Bridge. Why is this particular bridge so famous? It’s the longest bridge in the Florida Keys, and several movies have featured this structure.

It’s the perfect spot for super vacation snaps, with  Instagram -worthy views in all directions. So be a tourist in your state and appreciate the history of old bridges like these.

Key West Beaches

This bridge was known as the “Eighth Wonder of the World” at its original construction in 1912.  Rebuilt in 1982, the modern bridge is far safer and more user-friendly. But you can still walk along about 2.2 miles of the old bridge.

Key West Attractions

Southernmost point buoy.

Congratulations. You have finally made it. You’ve arrived at the Southernmost Point in the Continental United States. And one of the most photographed attractions here in Key West is the Southernmost Point Buoy. You’ll find it on the corner of South Street and Whitehead Street.

It’s the ultimate selfie spot in Key West, but you may have to wait a while because everyone else probably thinks so too! The landmark was erected in 1983 and marked the point that’s only 90 miles from  Cuba . Once you’ve taken that ‘selfie,’ there’s a piece of history nearby that you’ll want to see.

Southernmost Point Buoy in Key West

Ernest Hemingway House

Visit Ernest Hemingway House on Whitehead Street for a different attraction. This building is a must-see for all visitors to Key West. The residence of American writer Ernest Hemingway during the 1930s is now a museum. Situated across from the Key West Lighthouse, it’s the museum you must visit on your day trip to Key West.

  • Key West Beaches

Of course, you didn’t travel from Miami to Key West to stay indoors. So get to the beach and enjoy a few hours in the sun. Smathers Beach is known as one of the  best beaches in Key West . You’ll find everything you need here: watersports, beach bars, picnic tables, and nearby bike trails.

Walking Tour Of The Old Town

No matter how you get there, once in Key West, you’re spoiled for choice for fun activities. Numerous day trip excursions and tours are on offer but are usually water-related. You’d probably prefer to stretch your legs and get to know the town.

A walking tour of Key West is your best bet. And the Key West Southernmost Food And Cultural Tour is a tour with a delicious difference.

Walking Tour Key West

First-time visitors or solo travelers love this innovative tour. You’ll get to explore the old town’s historic district, but don’t eat lunch before this. You’ll want to arrive hungry.

The tour includes tastings at some of Key West’s top eating establishments. You could even get some coupons for restaurants or diners during your stay. So if you stay a while in Key West, you’ll know exactly where to go for a good meal.

Fun For ‘Foodies’ In The Keys

A day trip to Key West isn’t complete without enjoying some delectable Key Lime Pie. Key Lime Pie is a Florida taste sensation and made it into the law books. A Florida statute in 2006 designated Key Lime Pie as ‘the official Florida state pie.

Key Lime Pie

Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe is a must-stop for the best Key Lime Pie in the Keys. This store has supplied the locals with Key Lime delicacies for over twenty-five years. It’s about time you tried them, too.

You’ll find this charming establishment at two different locations: on Elizabeth Street and Front Street. But if you’re short on time, and need to get back home, don’t despair. You can still sample their amazing Key Lime Pie and other tasty goodies. They will happily ship it to you wherever you are.

Of course, once you’re back in Miami, there’s always Versailles Restaurant in Little Havana. They have delicious Cuban food, to be sure. But the bakery adjoining the restaurant offers some decent Key Lime Pie too.

How long is the ferry ride from Miami to Key West?

An excursion on the Key West Ferry will take passengers to the southernmost point of America at 40mph in a luxurious catamaran. Riding the Key West Express costs approximately $155 per adult round-trip.

Is Key West worth a day trip from Miami?

Yes, if you are short on time. However, I don’t recommend it. If you make a day trip, you won’t have time to see all the natural parks, and you’ll have to pick specific attractions to visit. It’s impossible to see it all on a day trip.

Is it better to fly to Key West or drive from Miami?

Flying is “technically” quicker. Flights from Miami to Key West take 46 minutes. However, add in getting to the airport and checking in, and you’ll be close to the 3.5 hours it takes to drive. Flights are also expensive, typically at least $150 per person return.

Closing Thoughts

One of the best routes in Florida is Miami to Key West! Once you get south and reach the first Key, you’ll think you’ve left the states and entered the  Caribbean ! There’s nothing quite like it, and it’s a trip everyone should take at least once in their life!

A great place to stop in the Keys is the Adderley Town Historic Site in the Crane Point Museum. It consists of several buildings that have been restored to their original condition. Visitors can tour the buildings and get a glimpse into what life was like for early settlers in the area. Would highly recommend!

Virgin Voyages' guide to Cruise Key West

A haven for artists and sunset-seekers alike, the only poetic rival to the writers who called Key West home is the geography itself.

It’s all a breeze in the keys

With it’s fiercely independent personality and leave-your-last-name-at-the-dock attitude, Key West is a celebration of cultural collision — with Bahamian Conch, Cuban and African-American heritage permeating the spirit and inclusive philosophy of the island known as “One Human Family”.

More than its pirate past and raucous Duval Street parties (although, to be fair, those are worth the hype), Key West is home to an ever-evolving community of boundary-pushing artists and dedicated preservationists—lined with pastel-colored houses and nights spent toasting sunsets so incredible they inspire some of the world’s most sacred art.

What to see and do on the island

The Shore Things, the tour things and Hemingway’s fur things

Dolphin Watch and Wildlife Snorkel

A dolphin-watching and wildlife snorkeling trip

Key West Rum & Cigar Tasting Tour

A tour of the cigar and rum industry in Key West

The Duval Crawl: Key West's Pub Crawl

Pub crawl down Duval Street at the liveliest bars

Head out on the turquoise waters of the gulf to watch bottlenose dolphins as they swim, play, feed and do whatever else they please. Afterwards, head back to the wildlife refuge, where you can snorkel along the shallow backcountry.

Key West Rum and Cigar Tasting Tour

Technically located closer to Cuba than it is to Miami, the cigar and rum industry in Key West is as historically fascinating as it is… straight-up fun. Try some rum at the Papa Pilar Rum Distillery at the Hemingway Rum Company, which functions as both a distillery and a museum.

The Duval Crawl: Key West's Pub Crawl

The best way to see a famous Key West tradition while also letting loose because, yes, you are on vacation via the “Duval Crawl”—the downtown pub crawl. The vibe of the crawl is a cross between the famous chill Florida Keys atmosphere, a splattering of upbeat live music and Caribbean drinks that taste exactly like a vacation should.

Parasail the Painted Island Skies

Float through the air as one of the 12-passenger parasailing boats glides you past sights that can only be seen from the air. As you parasail, take a look below to spot dolphins playing in the surf, or colorful tropical birds flying past.

When the sun sets in Key West… you’ll know. And not just because a myriad of artists from Jimmy Buffet to Judy Blume will make art inspired by the island’s evening end. You’ll know because the sky lights up like fire—tangerine and gold stretching far and wide across the Caribbean sea as you pull away from the dock. Setting on a day spent in a place that goes far beyond a bachelor and bachelorette party destination—where the best of New Orleans and Nantucket meet in the Caribbean to create a little island with a very big personality.

The beauty of the skyline, protected anchorages, historic sights & local culture

IMG_5317.JPG

Florida Keys

Pristine waters, breathtaking sunsets, vibrant reefs & local culture.

SV The Space Between small.png

Crystal clear waters, powder white sand beaches, exquisite marine life & local culture.

South Florida:

Miami - From Ft. Lauderdale it's an invigorating 3+ hour sail down Florida's coast to the Port of Miami. Here you can enjoy the iconic Miami Skyline as we anchor in front of the historic Miami Marine Stadium and watch the sky illuminate in city lights.  The anchorage is an ideal spot for paddle boarding, people watching, sundowners and dance parties on the bow.

Coconut Grove - From Ft. Lauderdale it's a 4+ hour adventure to Coconut Grove.  Depending on the sea state we can either tuck into the Port of Miami with views of the skyline as we narrowly duck under the Rickenbacker Causeway Bridge. Or we can continue down the Atlantic Ocean and round the cape of Key Biscayne, spotting the Cape Florida Lighthouse and historic Stiltsville.  We can hang out at Nixon's Sandbar for some fun local flare or anchor next to some weekend party goers on their megayachts and enjoy some entertaining people watching.  If you prefer a more relaxing setting, Hobie Island Beach Park or Dinner Key offer just that.

Florida Keys:

Upper Keys - Departing from Ft. Lauderdale it is a 2 day journey, stopping at either Miami or Coconut Grove along the way.  We then journey inside the 70n square mile, John Pennycamp Coral Reef State Park. It is the first underwater state park and boasts beautiful coral formations, sunken statues and abundant marine life. Time and weather permitting Tavernier Key offers still more reefs, a Wild Bird Sanctuary and a drawbridge to the Gulf side. From there we can access a calm anchorage ideal for paddle boarding and a quick dinghy ride to The Oceanview Inn & Sports Pub in Islamorada for entertainment and local fare.

Middle Keys - Picking up from either Tavernier or Marathon (not available on a round trip FTL trip).  We can either dock at one of our favorite secluded marinas for quick access to restaurants, bars, grocery and liquor store and the famous Sea Turtle Hospital or moor in mooring field for a dinghy ride to the same.  There are many beautiful reefs and snorkel spots to hit as we travel south. We make a stop in Bahia Honda State Park to snorkel the ledge, visit the beach or do some paddle boarding.  If seas permit, there is an amazing reef with Goliath Groupers off of Big Pine.  From there it's off to Key West.  From Key West we will visit Snipe Point, undeniably the most beautiful beach in the Keys accessible only by boat. Disembarking in Key West.

Key West - Oh Key West! One of our favorite places. We highly recommend upgrading to a couple nights at a marina to get a taste of all the land based activities.  It is a one-of-a-kind adventure.  From the water there are calm anchorages with legendary sunsets, Snipe Pointe - a sandbar/beach on the Gulf side, out-island beaches and swim and snorkel spots.

Freeport to Abacos - From West End towards Yankee Cay or Big Fish / Barefoot area, then southbound through Spanish, Nunjack, Green Turtle to Treasure Cay.  Disembarking in Treasure Cay.

Abacos South -  Departing Treasure Cay towards Great Guana, passing through Man of War, Hope Town, Lubbers to the Pelicans.

Blue Water Sailing - From Pelican long blue water sail around the southern point of Great Abaco Island and up to Sandy Point.  This is more of an advanced sail in open seas, for the adventurer looking to get some blue water time, not focusing on the excursions.  With a winddown at Gorda Cay or "Castaway Cay" as Disney calls it.  Disembarking at Sandy Point.

Longtime Monroe County administrator indicted; latest Keys official facing criminal charge

Chris Gothner , Digital Journalist

KEY WEST, Fla. – Former Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi became the latest official in the Florida Keys to face a criminal charge as prosecutors announced his indictment on a felony charge by a grand jury.

Friday’s announcement comes in the wake of multiple arrests in a wide-ranging narcotics theft scandal connected to the Monroe County Fire Rescue Trauma Star air ambulance program.

Recommended Videos

Prosecutors announced the indictments of MCFR’s former medical director, Dr. Sandra Schwemmer, 72, and a high-ranking EMS officer, 45-year-old Division Chief Andrea Thompson, last Friday. Lynda Rusinowski, 58, Trauma Star’s former chief flight nurse, had previously been among those arrested.

Gastesi, 63, retired as county administrator in February after serving in the county’s top unelected position for nearly a decade, according to Keys Weekly . He had been expected to return to the post.

The former top official is facing a charge of official misconduct, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, prosecutors said.

Charging documents obtained by Local 10 News don’t outline the specific allegations that led to his indictment.

In a news release, the Monroe County State Attorney’s Office said Gastesi, of Islamorada, “is accused of knowingly and intentionally obstructing, delaying, or preventing the communication of information relating to the commission of a felony that directly affected the government entity he served” between Aug. 11 and Nov. 17, 2022.

“This case, like the recent indictments of Dr. Schwemmer and Andrea Thompson, demonstrates our office’s unwavering commitment to holding public servants accountable for their actions,” State Attorney Dennis Ward said in a statement. “Mr. Gastesi’s alleged actions reflect a pattern of misconduct that affects our community’s trust in government, and we are fully committed to ensuring justice is served.”

The news release states that prosecutors “will continue to work closely with law enforcement to investigate and prosecute cases where public servants violate the law.”

“These ongoing legal actions highlight the importance of maintaining integrity and accountability within local government,” it states.

A judge set Gastesi’s bond at $25,000. He appeared in online jail records Friday afternoon.

In unrelated cases, two other people in the Keys have been arrested in recent weeks on various charges related to their employment or connections with public entities.

On July 31, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jennifer Ketcham, 40, was jailed on 19 felony charges after authorities said she illegally used official law enforcement databases to send her 19-year-old “drug dealer” boyfriend information about law enforcement raids, officers and confidential informants.

On Aug. 6, Ward’s office announced the arrest of Andy Newman, 68, who was contracted to do public relations work by the taxpayer-funded Monroe County Tourist Development Council. He’s accused of making false statements regarding TDC payments to a non-existent company.

Bad Monkey follows Vaughn's Andrew Yancy who comes across a severed human arm and believes it's his way back to the police force after being demoted to a restaurant inspector in the Florida Keys.

Bad Monkey is an adaptation of the 2013 novel of the same name written by Carl Hiaasen , who has written several other comedic crime thrillers set in Florida. Bad Monkey has received great reviews upon its release, receiving a strong Rotten Tomatoes critic score of 91% as of the time of writing. Bad Monkey marks the first television series Vaughn has starred in since True Detective season 2 which was released back in 2015, although he did guest star in several episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm seasons 10-12. Bad Monkey season 1, episode 2 ends with the interconnection of separate series protagonists, Andrew and Neville.

Key West, Florida

A good part of the filming done in Bad Monkey actually took place in the primary setting of the series, which is the Florida Keys. It's next to impossible to fake the iconic location of the Florida Keys, which is why the production for Bad Monkey took place there, especially considering how much of the series is wrapped around the culture there. Of course, shooting on location in the Florida Keys does present many challenges , particularly with the weather and the high levels of humidity.

The beautiful beaches and tropical scenery of Key West added a unique and enjoyable "trouble in paradise" vibe to Bad Monkey , which oozes into every plot point and visual frame of the series. Several aerial shots of Key West were shown to provide a fully immersive perspective of the location, full of palm trees and lush ocean waters. It makes for a perfect mix of crime and comedy elements in a highly desirable area that often leans into its beach vacation atmosphere.

Miami, Florida

The other prime filming location in Bad Monkey is Miami, Florida, which was used for the scenes in both Miami and the island of Andros in the Bahamas where Neville lives. Andros is also where Christopher and Ever are planning to build their new beachfront property. Key West is approximately 160 miles south of Miami, making a drive of about 4 hours one way. Miami is known for its party atmosphere and bustling nightlife scene, while the Bahamas is a beloved destination for vacationing. Not many television shows are shot entirely in southern Florida, making Bad Monkey a truly authentic viewing experience.

"By the middle of this week, forecasters warn that this feature could ramp up to at least a Category 1 hurricane as it travels across the warm waters of the far northeastern Caribbean Sea and shifts north of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola" and has the potential to ramp up into a major hurricane.

Predicted impact on florida from tropical storm ernesto.

"Currently, the weather along the southeastern U.S. coast looks fairly nice this weekend, so even if the storm remains well offshore, coastal impacts such as rough surf and rip currents could spell trouble for beach-goers trying to soak up the last weekends of summer," said AccuWeather  Meteorologist Emma Belscher.

An impact on Florida, the Bahamas and the southeastern U.S. depends on steering winds in the atmosphere, AccuWeather said.

While the storm is expected to take a track toward Bermuda, if its takes a bit more of a southern track initially, it could be pushed closer the East Coast, Belscher said.

Late this week, Florida could see rough surf, strong rip currents and dangerous seas, according to AccuWeather.

Key messages from the National Hurricane Center: What you need to know about Tropical Storm Ernesto

  • Ernesto is expected to bring tropical storm conditions to portions of the Leeward Islands late tonight and Tuesday and to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by late Tuesday. Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for this entire area.
  • Heavy rainfall may result in locally considerable flash flooding and mudslides in areas of the Leeward and Virgin Islands through Wednesday, and over Puerto Rico late Tuesday into Thursday.
  • It is too soon to know what impacts Ernesto could bring to Bermuda late this week, and interests there should monitor the progress of this system.

Current forecast: How strong could Potential Tropical Cyclone Five get?

  • At 5 p.m.: 40 mph
  • 12 hours: 45 mph
  • 24 hours: 50 mph
  • 36 hours: 60 mph
  • 48 hours: 70 mph
  • 60 hours: 80 mph
  • 72 hours: 90 mph
  • 96 hours: 110 mph
  • 120 hours: 110 mph:

What impact could Potential Tropical Cyclone 5 have and what areas could be affected?

  • Elsewhere in the Caribbean, Tropical Storm Ernesto is expected to produce the following rain accumulations through Friday morning: Windward Islands… 1 to 4 inches Eastern Hispaniola… 2 to 4 inches
  • WIND : Tropical storm conditions are expected in the warning area for the Leeward Islands beginning late tonight or early Tuesday. Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin spreading over the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by Tuesday evening.
  • STORM SURGE : A storm surge will raise water levels by as much as 1 to 3 feet above ground level for the eastern coast of Puerto Rico from San Juan to Guayama, including the islands of Culebra and Vieques and in the U.S. Virgin Islands, including St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. A storm surge will raise water levels by as much as 1 to 3 feet above normal tide levels in the British Virgin Islands. Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves.

➤ Excessive rainfall forecast

  • SURF : Swells generated by Ernesto will likely begin to affect portions of the Leeward Islands beginning late tonight. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

What else is out there and how likely are they to strengthen?

The National Hurricane Center is tracking two tropical waves:

  • First wave: A tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic is located over the Cabo Verde Islands. It's moving west at 5-11 mph.
  • Second wave: Another tropical wave in the eastern Caribbean stretches from Cuba into Panama.

What do the colored areas on the NOAA map mean?

The hatched areas on a tropical outlook map indicate "areas where a tropical cyclone — which could be a tropical depression, tropical storm or hurricane — could develop," said National Hurricane Center Deputy Director Jamie Rhome.

The colors make it visibly clear how likely a system could develop with yellow being low, orange medium and red high.

The National Hurricane Center generally doesn't issue tropical advisories until a there is a named storm, but there is an exception.

"If a system is near land and there is potential for development, the National Hurricane Center won't wait before it issues advisories, even if the system hasn't become an actual storm. This gives residents time to prepare," Rhome said.

Who is likely to be impacted?

It's too early at this time to determine if there will be any impact to Florida or the U.S. from the tropical waves.

Forecasters urge all residents to continue monitoring the tropics and to always be prepared. That advice is particularly important for what is expected to be a  very active hurricane season.
