Three Thai missing boats loaded with smuggled diesel found off Malaysian coast

BANGKOK: The three boats that disappeared from a marine police station last week with some 330,000 litres of diesel were found in Malaysian waters on Sunday (June 16) and are being towed back.

Pol Maj-General Jaroonkiart Pankaew (pic), deputy commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), said the three boats are expected to reach Songkhla pier on Monday.

Jaroonkiart was speaking to reporters just before boarding a police plane to Songkhla, where he will interrogate the crew of the three boats himself.

The three fishing boats were among five seized by the coast guard in the Gulf of Thailand on March 17 with 28 crew members. Most of the crew are of Thai nationality.

Three of the five boats were found to be loaded with some 330,000 litres of diesel smuggled from a neighbouring country to sell cheaply in Thailand. The other two boats were empty.

The five boats were towed to the Sattahip marine police’s pier in Chonburi. On the evening of June 11, officers guarding the boats allowed them to be moved away from the pier due to strong winds.

The officers believed the heavy winds and big waves would cause the boats to smash into the pier and get damaged.

However, no officers were dispatched to watch the boats and the three loaded with diesel disappeared late that night.

Channel 8 reported earlier that certain members of the coast guard had allegedly siphoned some diesel from the boats to sell and had let go of the boats to conceal their crimes.

On Monday, Pol Maj-General Preutthipong Nutchanart, commander of the marine police division under CIB, said it was found that some of the oil on the three boats was missing. He did not elaborate.

He also said eight of the 16 crew members on the three boats had also disappeared.

Preutthipong added that he believes some members of the Sattahip coast guard definitely had a hand in letting the boats go. He said Jaroonkiart has given him seven days to investigate the case and determine who was involved.

Meanwhile, Pol Colonel Chatchawal Chuchaicharoen, commander of Crime Suppression Sub-division 2, said he had learned from lawyers that only 11 of the 28 crew members arrested on March 17 were still available to face charges after being released on bail. The 11 suspects are scheduled to report for interrogation later on Monday. - The Nation/ANN

Yemen’s Houthi rebels launch boat-borne bomb attack against Greek-owned ship in Red Sea

ABOARD THE USS LABOON IN THE RED SEA (AP) — Yemen’s Houthi rebels launched a boat-borne bomb attack against a commercial ship in the Red Sea on Wednesday, authorities said, the latest escalation despite a U.S.-led campaign trying to protect the vital waterway.

The use of a boat loaded with explosives raised the specter of 2000’s USS Cole attack, a suicide assault by al-Qaida on the warship when it was at port in Aden, killing 17 on board. Associated Press journalists saw the Cole in the Red Sea on Wednesday, now taking part in the U.S. campaign while visiting one of her sister ships, the USS Laboon.

Yemen’s military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree claimed responsibility for the attack, identifying the vessel targeted as the Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned bulk carrier Tutor. He described the attack as using a “drone boat,” as well as drones and ballistic missiles.

In a warning to shippers, the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center described the vessel as being hit in its stern by a small white craft southwest of the Houthi-controlled port city of Hodeida.

The captain “reports the vessel is taking on water, and not under command of the crew,” the UKMTO said. He also “reports the vessel was hit for a second time by an unknown airborne projectile.”

The U.S. military’s Central Command also acknowledged the attack, saying the Tutor “most recently docked in Russia.”

“The impact of the (drone boat) caused severe flooding and damage to the engine room,” it added.

The U.S. military separately destroyed three anti-ship cruise missile launchers in Houthi-held Yemen, as well as one rebel drone over the Red Sea. The Houthis launched two anti-ship ballistic missiles over the Red Sea, but they caused no damage, Central Command said.

The Houthis, who seized Yemen’s capital nearly a decade ago and have been fighting a Saudi-led coalition since shortly after, have been targeting shipping throughout the Red Sea corridor over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.

They say the attacks are aimed at stopping the war and supporting the Palestinians, though the attacks often target vessels that have nothing to do with the conflict .

The war in Gaza has killed more than 36,000 Palestinians there, while hundreds of others have been killed in Israeli operations in the West Bank. It began after Hamas-led militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing about 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostage.

The Houthis have launched more than 50 attacks on shipping, killed three sailors, seized one vessel and sunk another since November, according to the U.S. Maritime Administration. A U.S.-led airstrike campaign has targeted the Houthis since January, with a series of strikes May 30 killing at least 16 people and wounding 42 others, the rebels say.

Associated Press journalists on an embark with the U.S. Navy were interviewing Cmdr. Eric Blomberg, the commanding officer of the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer Laboon, when the alert came in on the attack. Blomberg took multiple calls from sailors on board the vessel, giving updates on the apparent attack.

The Laboon is one of the destroyers accompanying the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier and both has shot down Houthi fire and escorted vessels through the region. Though Blomberg and others stressed they were still investigating the attack, he said it appeared the vessel targeted had nothing to do with the Israel-Hamas war.

The Houthis “hit ships that are completely not associated or tied to the U.S. or Israel at all,” Blomberg said.

“These are just innocent merchant sailors carrying goods through the Red Sea, trying to get it through the least-expensive route, and they’re paying for it,” he said.

IDF fires artillery shells into Gaza as fighting between Israeli troops and Islamist Hamas militants continues on Oct. 12, 2023.

Middle East crisis — explained

The conflict between Israel and Palestinians — and other groups in the Middle East — goes back decades. These stories provide context for current developments and the history that led up to them.

‘All eyes on Rafah’ is the Internet's most viral AI image. Two artists are claiming credit

Two Malaysians separated by 900 miles are both taking credit for a synthetic image of Gaza that became the most viral ever AI-generated photo, underscoring the complexities of authorship and ownership in an online landscape increasingly overrun with content created by artificial intelligence.

The story behind the “all eyes on Rafah” graphic, which has been shared about 50 million times on Instagram and other platforms, likely begins on the northern tip of the Southeast Asian island of Borneo.

There, back in February, Zila AbKa was at her home playing around with Microsoft’s AI tool Image Creator.

AbKa is a 39-year-old science teacher and an AI art hobbyist. She’s also a pro-Palestinian activist. She wanted to make a piece of political art that depicted those sheltering in camps in the Gazan city of Rafah.

Zila Abka is a school teacher in Malaysia. She is active in the Facebook group Prompters Malaya, a gathering place for mostly Malaysian AI artists to show their work.

After the phrase “all eyes on Rafah” started going viral, AbKa said she wrote a prompt for the AI tool to create an image that would have the phrase spelled out by white tents amid dense rows of other tent encampments. The words had become a rallying cry after a World Health Organization representative used them to draw attention to the situation in the region where hundreds of thousands of displaced people have fled.

When Microsoft’s Image Creator spit out a graphic, AbKa put two watermarks on it: One indicating it was generated by AI; another saying she was the creator.

She liked it. So she shared a post on Feb. 14 in her language — Malay — to the Facebook group Prompters Malaya , a gathering place of about 250,000 mostly Malaysians who share AI-generated art, sometimes about the war in Gaza.

“I wanted to spread and highlight the issue and hoped that everybody would do whatever they could to show solidarity with Gazans right now,” AbKa told NPR.

AbKa has not previously spoken out about making the image.

AbKa: 'I think this is mine,' but the watermarks are gone

From there, she basically forgot about it — until last week, when she saw a very similar image on Instagram, spreading rapidly following an Israeli strike in the city that killed dozens and prompted worldwide condemnation.

But the image was altered. Her watermarks were gone. And the image was expanded to include snow-capped mountains looming over the tents, an almost surrealist touch, an AI riff on Gaza’s Middle Eastern landscape.

Zila Abka generated this image in February.

Zila Abka generated this image in February. Zila Abka/Microsoft Image Creator hide caption

At first, she was offended that someone had laundered her image and removed her name from it. In addition, she was initially alarmed that the “AI generated” disclaimer was missing just as tens of millions of people were re-sharing it across the internet.

She zoomed in to examine every letter and corner of the viral image. She concluded that it had to be hers.

“Everything about the structure of the words and the arrangement of the ‘tents,’ it’s all the same, except for the expanded part,” she said. “When I saw it, I thought, yeah, I think this is mine.”

But her annoyance over not getting credit soon dissipated.

“I don’t think any generated AI image is fully someone’s belonging,” AbKa said.

Indeed, the U.S. Copyright Office has repeatedly rejected copyright protection for AI-generated images since they lack human authorship, placing the AI images in a legal gray area.

It was, however, AbKa’s unique prompt that summoned the image. She said that should be worth something, though galvanizing support for Gaza was always her main impetus.

“If the aim is to spread awareness,” AbKa said about the version of the image that went viral, “then I think I should thank that person.”

The person behind the account 'Shahv4012'

Amirul Shah is a college student and photographer in Malaysia. The “all eyes on Rafah” image he created has been shared nearly 50 million times on Instagram.

That person is Amirul Shah, known as Shahv4012 on Instagram. He is also Malaysian.

The two do not know each other, nor have they ever communicated.

AbKa believes he took her image, edited it and created an Instagram “template,” which has since surged on social media, amassing nearly 50 million shares on Instagram and millions more on other social media platforms.

AbKa thinks Shah cropped her image right above her watermarks, then edited it with a tool that uses AI to expand and re-imagine the background of a photo. She believes this because she tried it herself on her own AI rendering and got results strikingly similar to the viral image.

Shah’s image has his own watermark on it with the tag of his Instagram account dedicated to his photography, @chaa.my_, giving the impression that the whole thing was his original undertaking.

Amirul Shah added his generated image to an Instagram template that was amplified by celebrities like Dua Lipa and Bella Hadid.

When Shah was reached for an interview, he denied copying AbKa’s creation. Instead, he shared a different version of events.

Shah, a 21-year-old college student in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital, has not previously spoken out about his process.

A photography enthusiast, Shah says he was toying around with an AI image generator recently. He thinks he used Microsoft’s Image Creator, the same service AbKa used, but he claims he can’t remember.

When he added it to an Instagram "template," it ricocheted around the world, as influencers and celebrities like Dua Lipa and Bella Hadid amplified it to their millions of followers.

The image looks uncannily like AbKa’s, but he claims he hadn't even seen AbKa's before making his own.

Still, the size of the words, placement of each letter and AI-generated clusters of tents next to the phrase are identical. But Shah’s version is portrayed from an higher aerial view, with deeper and longer shadows cast by snowy mountains.

He said he was giving all sorts of Gaza-related AI images a try as a form of activism, not angling for virality.

“My intention was not for popularity,” Shah told NPR. “I wanted to uphold justice for all Palestinians who are there.”

Shah says AI images spread faster

Technologists say that generating the same exact AI image twice is exceedingly unlikely.

In dozens of attempts to recreate the image using Microsoft’s Image Creator, NPR was not able to prompt the tool to create a visual that came close to the viral one. Most of the time, the tool struggled to correctly spell “All eyes on Rafah,” a limitation of many AI image generators, which tend to depict words misspelled or warped in some way.

These are the results produced for NPR by Microsoft’s Image Creator after given a prompt to produce a realistic-looking aerial photo of Rafah, with the phrase “all eyes on Rafah” superimposed among the tents.

Shah, who regularly shares posts on social media highlighting the plight of Palestinians, said he has noticed that real photos and videos of the war tend to have limited reach on Instagram.

“The picture from AI can spread faster in a short time,” he said. Shah says another problem is that he has had graphic images of war removed by Instagram for violating the platform’s policies. He said he’s aware that repeat violations can mean that “users can get blocked,” he said.

Felix Simon, a research fellow at the University of Oxford who studies AI’s impact on public discourse, said the image being created by artificial intelligence fueled its virality far less than other factors.

“The simplicity of the slogan, the symbolism at work, the timing and political context, and the fact that it was shared by celebrities,” said Simon, adding that “the lack of graphic content makes it less likely to get taken down, which helps, too.”

It is a concern that has been echoed by other activists who have claimed graphic imagery that shows the atrocities of the war in Gaza can be removed from platforms, or suppressed by social media algorithms.

Some commentators criticized the meme for portraying a sanitized version of war that renders human horrors on the ground in Gaza into an easily-shareable AI image.

Both AbKa and Shah reject that idea, saying AI images can be a useful way to grab peoples' attention and make them engage in some way with the war.

Yet there is no agreement among them about who created the viral image that has spurred discussion around the world about the authenticity of online activism and renewed attention on an internet increasingly rife with realistic-looking AI depictions.

When pressed in direct messages on Instagram for a response to AbKa’s contention that her image was copied, Shah blocked an NPR reporter.

West Vancouver Yacht Club – Far More Than a Marina

west vancouver yacht club menu

This will be a familiar question for most boaters when they first buy a boat and need to keep it someplace; what does one look for in a yacht club or marina?

Is it the convenience, the atmosphere, the clubhouse, the docks, the racing, the cruising, the price, or the people? In this economy it may just end up being all of the above. However, what is becoming very clear time and again is that it tends to come down to the people you meet and the friends that you make.

The greater Vancouver area is Canada’s third largest metropolitan area with 2.3 million people, and the most densely populated area in Canada. For more than a decade, business magazine assessments have ranked Vancouver as one of the most "liveable cities" worldwide. The Vancouver Metro Port was the busiest and largest Canadian port in 2009. There is much competition in the area for yacht clubs and marinas to attract boaters. Along the North Shore alone you will find the West Vancouver Yacht Club, Eagle Harbour Yacht Club, Hollyburn Sailing Club and Deep Cove Yacht Club; a ferry ride away are Gibsons Yacht Club and Bowen Island Yacht Club.

The ‘sixties saw the clubhouse completed and the start of the annual Southern Straits Sailing Classic race. During the ‘seventies (they say if you can remember them you weren’t there, but I guess these folks were) the club obtained their first two outstations, which became their highlight.

west vancouver yacht club menu

The last 12 years have seen a lot of change at the once quaint club. The Yachting Centre for improved sail training was built, docks were replaced at Fisherman’s Cove and outstations, and the construction of the west dry wharf with a five ton hoist, and which is now the home to the club’s one design fleet, was completed. The two newer outstations are comprised of a joint marina operation in Duncan Cove and Pender Harbour (39 nm away), on the way to Desolation Sound. Telegraph Harbour (35 nm from the home port) was added in 2010 and also has all the amenities of a marina. These outstations are maintained in beautiful, pristine condition by the members too!

As for the racing scene, there are weekly Wednesday night club races, the signature Southern Straits Race, the Pumpkin Bowl and the Snowflake Series. “If there is wind anywhere, it’s here – it’s very rare for a race to be cancelled due to lack of wind.” They are also home to the NSRT (North Shore Racing Team), which provides youth with the opportunity to compete at the inter-club level. They have also recently instituted a new high school sailing program for which students can obtain four credits in Grades 10, 11, and 12. It runs twice per week for five weeks from April to May. Can you believe it? High School credits for going sailing! I got out of high school FAR too early.

The Pumpkin Bowl was accompanied this year by some strong winds on Sunday with gusts up to 30 knots and inclement weather. The regatta annually sees over 200 young sailors (this year was a record 232) in Optimists right up to 29ers. Regatta Chairman and former sailing Olympian Karen Johnson was delighted with the turnout and commended the young sailors, “on the effort they put in to try to compete in difficult, intimidating conditions. Many stories were shared over the weekend of exciting capsizes”. This event had 100 volunteers turn out to help, which even included carving Harken-inspired pumpkins. Past Commodore W. Gary Wharton, commented that, “If anyone had any doubts about whether the club is about cheap moorage, or inexpensive membership fees, they only need attend the Pumpkin Bowl Regatta to see that the WVYC is far more than a marina. It is truly a collection of people expressing their joy in an activity of mutual interest”. Karen also used a new fire drill, not approved by the fire department, to emp ty the clubhouse. “Ice cream outside by the flagpole” gets them outside in no time. The tradition of make-your-own sundaes continued despite the weather!!

Moorage is in strong demand all over the lower mainland. With WVYC’s attractive mooring rates, prime location, and only a 3-4 year wait for boats under 25 feet, you can see why it is in demand, though they are currently accepting new members. Karen and her husband Russ Fretenburg joined 9 years ago. According to Karen, “We got a club, moorage and access to outstations for just a little more than we had been paying for moorage. We live on the North Shore of Vancouver, and WVYC has a strong commitment to racing and cruising. I knew that many successful racers had grown up at WVYC. My children have now been involved in the Junior Sailing Program for 4 years and they really love it. It is a friendly club that welcomes sailors from other clubs.”

I’d check them out if I were you, sounds like they have something for everyone – including you.

The formation of Glacial Lake Iroquois, at the end of the last ice age, was to have a lasting effect on the boating activity on Lake Ontario. Many years ago, as the lake eroded, it left geological records through alluvial deposits from the Bluffs, which then settled westward to form the Toronto Islands. More recently, the erosion rate picked up quickly in the 1940s when cottages were being built along the bluffs to capitalize on the breathtaking, enticing waterfront view of this “geological wonder” and a unique feature in North America. The result of this consistent and dramatic erosion in the Scarborough Bluffs, has created an impressive portion aptly named Cathedral Bluffs.  The Bluffs were first named by Elizabeth Simcoe, wife of John Graves Simcoe, the first lieutenant governor of Upper Canada, in 1793. She wrote in her diary, “The [eastern] shore is extremely bold, and has the appearance of chalk cliffs, but I believe they are only white sand. They appeared so well that we talked of building a summer residence there and calling it Scarborough.” It runs for 15 kilometres from the Eastern Beaches to West Hill, and soars up to 90 metres at its highest point. A stylized version of The Bluffs appeared prominently on the flag of the former City of Scarborough before it was amalgamated into the City of Toronto. Nestled in the middle and protected on all sides you will find one of the friendliest places on Lake Ontario, Highland Yacht Club.

While Canadians may have been slower to warm to pontoon boats than our southern neighbours, that’s definitely changed as we see more of them gracing our waters every year. The latest data shows pontoon boats now represent around 30% of all new boats sold in Canada and it’s easy to understand why – with their interior space and tremendous versatility, pontoons are near-perfect family runabouts.

Cruising georgian bay’s 30,000 islands: canada’s freshwater paradise for boaters.

west vancouver yacht club menu

By Elizabeth Wilson, “Georgian Bay Beauties” ( www.GeorgianBayBeauties.org )

It’s a beautiful morning as we perform our pre-departure checklist, fire up the engines and prepare to release our lines. And if the long-range forecast of very low winds coupled with plenty of sunshine holds, that’s exactly what we need for the areas we plan to explore on this trip!

We are departing Midland for a week of visiting some of the islands and anchorages within Georgian Bay’s “30,000 Islands” – specifically those along the western edge. These are the less protected islands which face toward wide-open Georgian Bay, where boaters often have to depart the small craft route and work a little harder at setting the hook but are then rewarded with magnificent western views, stunning sunsets, and so much to explore!

West Vancouver Yacht Club Celebrates 75 Years

By patrick matishak.

west vancouver yacht club menu

While yacht clubs are founded on all things boating, and generally “messing about in boats,” it is the people who make them truly special. In 1945, when six like-minded boaters came together to sign the charter forming the West Vancouver Yacht Club , they did not foresee a 75th Anniversary celebration in the club’s future.

In the preliminary years, the club established a few temporary moorage locations. At best, 12 mooring buoys were located in Pilot Cove. A permanent home base for the club appeared unattainable. Late in 1950, during usual chitchat amongst members moored at a weekend gathering, a significant plan was hatched: a small group of members would form a syndicate and create a permanent mooring facility. In quick succession, discussions took place that lead to a group of 18 members who purchased property at their desired location, West Vancouver’s Fisherman’s Cove. They dredged, piled and supplied floats, which were turned over to West Vancouver Yacht Club’s ownership, management and operation. In return, the syndicate members were offered reduced moorage fees and membership dues.

When the syndicate purchased the first lot in Fisherman’s Cove, a small white cabin on the property became the Clubhouse. Over the course of a few years, additional adjacent properties were acquired, assembling the land and water lots the club enjoys today. A new clubhouse was built in 1963. A Yachting Centre was added in 2002, to serve as the headquarters for the expanding, very active, youth sailing program. To date, the clubhouse has undergone several renovations, with the most recent and significant enhancement completed in 2012. The dock configuration was redesigned in 2013. Subsequently, a redevelopment project eliminated some smaller moorage, accommodating larger and beamier vessels. This redevelopment further supported the club’s environmental stewardship efforts, earning the Georgia Strait Alliance’s Clean Marine BC Five-Anchor Eco-Rating certification.

Over the years, the club developed outstations at Kendrick Island in the Gulf Islands, and Elliot Bay in Howe Sound. Outstations in Telegraph Harbour and Pender Harbour are also very popular cruising destinations for members.

Two annual club signature events are the Southern Straits Yacht Race and the Pumpkin Bowl Regatta. Inaugurated in 1969, the Easter weekend Southern Straits attracts racers from around the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Crews come to compete, make new acquaintances, rekindle old ones and share in the camaraderie of sailboat racing. Celebrating 21 years, Pumpkin Bowl is a junior/intermediate event with a Halloween theme. The regatta has become the premier local dinghy racing event for young sailors, attracting over 200 competitors annually. These events, in addition to a number of races and regattas, including the summer Wednesday Evening Race Series, and the winter Snowflake Races, make for an active and engaged sailing fleet.

Cruisers are not left out of the fun. Frequent cruises and gatherings up and down our beautiful coast have been chronicled over the years in the Foghorn, a monthly WVYC publication.

The West Vancouver Yacht Club has always been a progressive, family friendly club, with active and engaged members cruising, racing, socializing, volunteering and supporting each other. Our success is attributed to retaining these values as times and circumstances have transitioned through 75 years. Looking ahead, we see a bright future, in continuing to build an active and engaged membership of all ages, who share a passion for “messing about in boats”.

  • 25th Anniversary Pumpkin Bowl — A Dinghy Racing Extravaganza

West Vancouver Yacht Club’s annual two-weekend dinghy racing extravaganza, Pumpkin Bowl, was a smash hit as the event celebrated its 25th year!

Opti youth weekend october 14-15.

25 years on from the first ever Pumpkin Bowl at West Vancouver Yacht Club (WVYC) and there are definitely no signs of slowing down! This was clearly evident at this year’s Opti Youth weekend with 89 Opti sailors of varying ages between 7 and 15 years old, enjoying both on and off water action. This was the largest Opti fleet ever at Pumpkin Bowl.

west vancouver yacht club menu

Saturday morning dawned clear with no rain as excited Opti sailors, their parents, and coaches set up in the Club’s parking lot. Registration was buzzing while the vast majority of sailors checked in and obtained their dolly tags that morning, plus the usual swag with Halloween candy. Under the masterful supervision of Charles Le Clerk, the Opti Champ fleet launched efficiently, followed a little later by one of the largest Opti Green fleets Pumpkin Bowl has ever had with 36 sailors.

Race Officer, Harry Coleman, set the Opti Champ course west of Point Atkinson to optimize the forecast easterly, while Race Officer Kathy Parslow set the Green course not far from the Basin just off Eagle Island. Both fleets enjoyed east to southeasterly breezes of 4 to 6 knots, with the Green fleet experiencing an early outflow with a 180 degree wind shift fairly early on, keeping Green fleeters on their toes and sailing uphill on both legs. The northerly outflow reached the Champ fleet later in the day, which proved no problem at all for Harry’s team, including Kerry Phillips, who operated three robotic marks to swiftly reset the course.

west vancouver yacht club menu

After three short races and some Pied-Piper-style sailing where the Green fleet all followed a coach, it was time for the Green fleet to head in for activities ashore. Many Green fleeters couldn’t wait to find the witch, carve pumpkins, and play with some incredible balloon sculptures produced by “Twistin’ Sam” — think lightsabers, bows and arrows, mini Optis, pumpkins, flowers and hearts, to name just a few of Twistin’ Sam’s creations.

The Champ fleet completed four races before joining the Green fleet later in the afternoon to take part in the fun and games. In addition to the competitive racing, the Champ fleet were also privileged to see a number of humpback whales cruising by, followed not long after (but quite separately) by a pod of orcas. What a show!

On Sunday morning, the rain cleared yet again and both fleets enjoyed a consistent breeze of 8 to 15 knots with only minor wind shifts. The Champ fleet raced just north of Passage Island and the Green fleet set up in a similar position to the day before in clear view of the Champ fleet. Enjoying a bit of friendly rivalry, Kathy managed to outdo Harry with six races on the Green course, with the Champ course reaching their maximum of five races for the day by 2:00 p.m.

The time out buoys on the Green course proved very handy for the coaches, who tied up a string of Optis belonging to sailors who found Sunday’s conditions a bit challenging. This allowed the majority of the Green fleeters to stay out on the course to watch the racing and still participate in the event.

Behind the scenes as usual, a large number of volunteers worked magic on land and water to make this such a memorable event — thank you! Nicky da Costa in particular, worked tirelessly on Information Desk and Volunteer Assignments, while also training to take over as Regatta Chair next year.

Laser and Doublehanded Weekend October 21-22

Having only just recovered from a busy Opti Youth weekend, Pumpkin Bowl 2.0 for Lasers and Doublehanded dinghies sure did not disappoint! In total, the participation was fabulous, only six boats short of the largest Pumpkin Bowl ever. The parking lot was packed with Lasers and Fevas, while the outer and inner docks bulged under the weight of countless 420s, 29ers, and FJs.

On Saturday morning, blessed with clear skies and moderate fall temperatures (unheard of for Pumpkin Bowl), the Laser fleet headed to Jericho and raced off Spanish Banks near the Jericho Bell Buoy, taking advantage of the building westerly. Earlier, coaches and support boats towed the Doublehanded fleet some way off Point Atkinson past Passage Island to find the wind. As predicted, the wind brought massive seas with up to 6 foot waves. For many competitors, this was the first time they had raced in a dinghy so far offshore and in such enormous swell — both exhilarating and terrifying at the same time!

On the Doublehanded course, setting marks in up to 500 feet of water in huge swell proved challenging — WVYC’s signal boat Silver Shadow even dragged its anchor! All fleets enjoyed fantastic racing with most fleets completing four races well in time to be towed back to the Club in daylight.

After dinner on Saturday night, Ant “The Quiz Master” Gillard ran a highly engaging quiz for sailors, volunteers, and parents alike. Questions ranged from nautical to pop culture themes such as “Of the four wind gods, who is the exalted ruler of the North Wind?” and “Who is the most followed person on Instagram?” The room was completely silent while teams pondered a question, only to be followed with screams and shouts when Ant provided the answers. A great way to let off steam after a day of full-on racing!

west vancouver yacht club menu

Sunday proved more of the same on water. This time the Doublehanded boats competed east of the Jericho Bell Buoy and the Lasers competed south of the Doublehanded course directly west of Spanish Banks. The swell was just as fierce, but by this time many competitors had learned to harness the waves to their advantage downwind, making for some pretty fun and fast racing. Racing in an FJ, I learned to steer well clear of the 29ers as they flew downwind in fairly consistent 15 to 18 knots. All fleets enjoyed terrific racing with most fleets completing another four intense races.

Heading in for a hot shower, hot chocolate, hot chili, and Halloween inspired cupcakes, most sailors appeared pretty exhausted but elated. In addition to the usual awards, for the first time, Pumpkin Bowl organizers awarded the “Vlad Plavsic Award for Outstanding Sailor” to Andre Deseau, as well as PB necklaces to the top five ILCA six female identifying sailors.

west vancouver yacht club menu

What a fantastic pair of dinghy racing weekends! The weather held out, we found the wind, racing was awesome and, most importantly, the community of sailors and volunteers is stronger than ever. What more can a regatta celebrating its 25th anniversary hope to achieve?

Business name : West Vancouver Yacht Club

A yacht club is formed by a group of people with a common interest in using boats to get away from land and enjoy cruising local and distant waters, racing for the thrill of personal combat against other sailors and the elements, or just messing about on boats. In the children’s classic “The Wind in the Willows”, it is described thus: “There is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats…or with boats…in or out of ’em, it doesn’t matter.”

West Vancouver Yacht Club has just such beginnings and aspirations. Formed in 1945, the Club consisted of 45 people with only 6 boats between the lot of them. In 1946 the first Sailpast was held, and Club members and friends have been enjoying this annual event that starts the boating season every year since.

Humble beginnings, started by the dreams of a few, moved on to acquire the foreshore rights in Fisherman’s Cove in 1951 with a small cottage for a clubhouse. By 1963 the clubhouse you see overlooking the moorage was completed and then extensively updated in 2012. Much of the work carried out on Club projects is through members’ volunteering labour and expertise; volunteering is a mainstay of Club participation and camaraderie.

Many accomplishments over the years have contributed immensely to the enjoyment all the members have for “messing about in boats”. The annual Southern Straits Yacht Race brings sailors and boats to the Straits of Georgia to challenge each other in the boisterous spring weather conditions. Outstations have been added at Gambier Island and Kendrick Island and more recently with leased space in Pender Harbour and Telegraph Harbour. The Club sail training program, designed to help youngsters and adults become proficient in the skills of sailing, is now one of the premier such programs available to anyone in the community, not just Club members. To serve this program, the Sailing Center was built in 2002 as a focus for activity and learning in all aspects of small boat sailing.
