I have had my Manta 19 for 3 years now. It is my first yacht. My previous sailing experience was with windsurfers, mainly sinkers and waveboards. The Manta is a very good first yacht, she has a displacement of 680kgs and has a shoal draft keel and centreplate. She has a good turn of speed on all points of sail. I keep mine on a mooring on the Clyde. Like all small yachts she is a bit tender in a blow. Constructed from GRP she is well finished has 4 berths, albeit a bit cramped or cosy if you like. For safety it has in-built foam bouyancy. There have been over 1000 built, manufacture ended in the mid 1980’s. Although she is not particularly easy to launch and recover from a trailer because of the keel I would recommend her as a great starter yacht. Bill Beattie Scotland 14th November, 2005. Sun was shining and forecast force 3 – 5 so went for a sail. Mainsail reefed (only one position available) before leaving and furling genoa full out. A bit blowy odffshore as I left North Berwick (Firth of Forth, Scotland) but a couple of rolls in the genoa did the trick. I would guess mostly F4 gusting F5. What a great afternoon. Single handed sailing with confidence. Lifting out for the winter is a much over rated pastime!! Lazy Daze (Manta 19) My comments were going to be word for word the same as Bills (below). I have had my Manta 19 “Tiller Girl” for just a little longer. My first boat she has given me so much pleasure. I sail on the East coast, mainly on the Stour and Orwell rivers but hope to venture farther afield next year. Her lifting keel is ideal for our shallow waters – great for getting into little creeks. I am told there is a fleet of them in Woodbridge, Suffolk that race. There is a web site www.toddie.demon.co.uk that provides good information on the Manta 19. It includes the Manta 19 brochure, drawing of the centre keel plate, pictures of other manta 19’s and a message board. I have a Manta 19 moored on Coniston Water. Alan Yeomans My name is Geoff and I spent two and a half years from when I left school building the manta 19 as a yacht fitter.Just as a point of intrest there where two other boats built at Blakes Marine and one of them was a shorter version called the Manta 16.If my memory serves me right this was designed by the managing director Dave Hutchinson Hello, I’ve just brought a Manta 19 sail number 1176 built by Blakes Marine in 1978. Having spent a few weeks sailing, motoring and tidying up fittings and rigging, I have to say she is a wonderful boat, easy to sail, well built, nice lines and a well thought out layout. There must be over a thousand very smug Manta owners out there. I am from amsterdam the netherlands i own a manta 19 with number 1114 built in1977 by blake,s Having her for almost6 years nowshe named BIG BAMBU and i sail her on the Ijselmeer and the north sea also had made a trip from ijmuiden to lowestoft in 2007 single handed 105 miles in 25 hours not bad for a little ship like this.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Available with bilge keels Many were built under licence in the UK. (Blakes Marine Services Ltd.) Originally recommended outboard: 5hp longshaft Achimedes Penta

Broker's Comments

A practical cruiser with lifting keel and bilge keels. With all new sails and rigging this really is a great introduction to sailing. A new Yamaha 4 stroke engine adds to the attraction of this value for money package. Oh, and yes there is a road trailer included. A good clean dry boat she is very much ready to take way and enjoy.

Well-known member

I'm helping a friend to find a suitable day sailer/trailer sailer or sim. and we've found a Manta 19 which seems to be in very good nick. Unfortunately I can't find out much about this model via Google. Anyone had experience of it?

bazobeleza

years ago I used to race against one on the Dee, it allways seemed to be a nippy little sod and mine, a Hunter Europa was no slouch either.

I owned one a few years ago and thought it a very good trailer sailer. It sailed very well and had a good sized cabin. The build quality is good and they are very light to trail. Being only 6.5ft in the beam they are easy to manoeuvre on slipways as you can see down both sides. Another good thing is the mast is small and light which makes rigging easy.

I had one a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it, it sailed well, was easily launched and recovered and had a good sized cabin for a 19 footer. The centreplate is well designed and only weighs about 30 Kg so it is just lifted by a handle in the cockpit, the ballast is a cast iron stub that holds the centreplate. A great boat for shallow waters, because of the ballast stub, you can sail with the plate up, or leave it down and it will kick up, like a dinghy's will, if it touches the bottom. The centreplates are galvanised steel and can corrode, so that is worth checking. There is a website, www.manta19.miwd.co.uk that has some good info. I would have kept mine if I had had enough time for three boats....

Thanks for the responses, chaps. It sounds as if the boat merits further investigation.

Searush

They were designed as a fast dinghy with a lid for weekending - and exactly fulfill that brief.

manta yacht sinking underwater

27m yacht Manta sinks in Corsica after striking a reef

A 27-metre Canados yacht called Manta has sunk off the coast of the French island of Corsica after striking a shallow reef and taking on water. A total of 11 people were rescued, according to the local coastguard.

The incident, which happened on 15 August at 6.33am local time, involved a first response of 17 people, including three divers and one medical assistant.  The team arrived to find the 11 passengers had already evacuated and were safely transferred to rescue RIBs and brought back to shore at Propriano in Corsica.

Despite "best efforts", the yacht sunk in shallow water close to Senetosa lighthouse, close to the commune of Sartène.

An operation to remove the wreck will be implemented and in the meantime, the local authorities have put in a swimming ban in the local vicinity.

Manta FAQ's

Here's a page with some answers to questions that are regularly posted into the message board

Lifting Keel Dimensions

Here are the measurements of the lifting keel centre plate. Please note that the measurements were taken from a badly corroded centre plate. If you use this as a template you may have to do a bit of fine tuning with an angle grinder. Also, check the width of the slot in the keel as 1cm thickness might be too much for keels with less corrosion.

Manta 19 Trailer Sailer Yacht

manta 19 yacht

Manta 19 Trailer Sailor. Hull Number 1060 - Year 1977. Superb first boat or a move up from dinghy's. All in excellent condition can be handled very easily single handed both launch and recovery and also sailing. The swinging keel has been removed and a new galvanised one fabricated and refitted in 2016.

Main boom furling system on mainsail, hank on headsail, sails in good useable condition. This boat does not come with an outboard engine. The galvanised trailer is in excellent condition with the bearings and hubs recently greased and tyres in good order. One photo shows the guides on the trailer for easy docking. The only bad bit is some slight damage to the starboard gunwale which has been repaired (photo).

All new standing rigging and running rigging replaced with stainless steel in September 2016.On the stern of the boat is a unique stainless steel mast support with roller which allows easy mast handling, raising and lowering of the mast single handed. All original gelcoat in great condition but could do with a polish. Recent new navigation lights, masthead and cabin lights connected through new 3 way switch panel in the cabin. New cabin companionway washboards and doorframe (Photo). New rudder and hardwood tiller (New).

Comes with everything you need to sail, Ropes, Sheets, Fenders, etc.Any questions you have, I will be happy to ask. This really is a great boat, but work commitments are forcing a reluctant sale. £1295 O.V.N.O Tel Glenn on 0phone For further details.

Wardleys Marine Yacht Club

Tag archives: manta 19, fishing trip in a westerly chieftain, nov 2016.

At the very backend of October, members Malcolm, Tom and Simon from Wardleys Yacht Club braved the chilly airs and warnings of murky weather and set forth under full sail on a fishing trip. Apart from a few flatties that were too small to keep, business was slow.  Nevertheless,  oil lamps and a cosy cabin kept everyone feeling warm and comfortable.  And in the time honoured tradition, there was some medicinal help in the form of a crate of beer and a bottle of scotch. A Westerly Chieftain heading out in to Morecambe Bay
Grey was the colour of the sky. The sail over was quite uneventful. We kept our engine put-putting all the way. The sails were really just for effect and to cushion the incessant Morecambe Bay roll. The three of us stood at our respective helms under dripping hoods. For the whole day the rain pitter-pattered all around. Under full sail mid Morecambe Bay Tom and Malcolm with rods and bait.
On board we had fishing tackle boxes galore. They contained every conceivable device and trickery to get the fish to bite, and to haul them out into our awaiting frying pans! Alas, the lemon and  garnish lay idle. We had not picked the right night. Or maybe the fish were onto our little caper? A Canadian Canoe club arrived
We crossed paths with a Canadian canoe club. We expected them to have come from afar.  But no, they had just paddled-out  from nearby Roe Island. Still, no complaint, they filled the Ship Inn with good conversation and laughter. And as well, there was some thought provoking poetry recitals. The erudite looking canoeists lapped it up. The Wardley’s one member present, quietly watched on, much appreciating it all. ‘Luath’ at anchor.
Manta 19 ‘Luath’ came along in support. Whilst the men in serious wet-weather kit were fishing on the Chieftain, ‘Luath’s skipper took a moment to paddle around in the Avon dinghy and brush-off last month’s accumulated mud. On the island, see above, you can see the Ship Inn and neighbouring Customs cottages. A slide show of photo taken that weekend

Three men in two boats. October 2016

The weather forecast looked favourable so an early October trip across Morecambe Bay was arranged.  It was the first trip for Manta 19  ‘Luath’ — a boat that has spent twenty odd years sat on a mooring on Windermere / Ulswater and more recently in a farmer’s field.

Algae is a problem for boats sat idle for long periods out of the sun. However, and here’s a trick, if a boat has been waxed before hand, the green stuff comes off much easier. It took five or six buckets of sea water allied with some good honest elbow grease to get ‘Luath’ looking spic and span.

The three men and two boats arrived at Piel Island and spent the night rafted up side by side.  A shore visit to the island’s one and only public house was made, and for the time of year there was an encouraging number of sailors at the bar making merry.

The Saturday’s out-bound passage was cloudy but generally fine and Sunday’s home-bound passage was fantastic —  we had unadulterated sunshine all the way. The three men and two boats started early to make the most of the tides. As you can see there was a lovely sun rise over over the town of Morecambe. Behold!

Now take a look at the view of the Lake District fells above. This was taken whilst heading up the Barrow channel. We saw a hot air balloon traversing the hillside from the right towards the wind turbines. Rather them than me!

Earlier during the passage home  there was no point  in parting company, so we remained rafted-up.  Thus lucky ‘Luath’ got a free ride home — cheers ‘Sika’!

Review of Manta 19

Basic specs..

Both the hull and the deck is made of hand laid fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of hand laid fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The interior is like many other boats made of mahogany. Mahogany belongs to the hardwood species, known for being water-repellent and resistant to decay. It has an attractive wood grain and holds wood polish and varnish well. The boat is equipped with one cabin, 4 berths and a galley.

The boat has more than one rig. One option is a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Manta 19 has been built with different keel alternatives.

The Manta 19 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated. As the surface of a fin type keel is just a fraction of the total wet surface, the difference between an iron keel and a lead keel can in reality be ignored for cruising yachts.

Manta 19 can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.90 - 1.00 meter (2.95 - 3.25 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Unknown keel type

This keel is also made of iron.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.49 - 0.59 meter (1.61 - 1.91 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

An outboard motor is often used on this boat. In that case the boat will typically require a power of 1 - 2 hp, alternatively 30 - 36 lbs thrust if you prefer an electrical motor. Electric outboards are becoming popular for sailboat owners who want clean instant power with less noise and no exhaust fumes.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Manta 19 is 2.37, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

Manta 19 holds a CE certification:

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.4 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Manta 19 is about 69 kg/cm, alternatively 390 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 69 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 390 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 11m 2 (118 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Who is Mike Lynch? UK entrepreneur among those missing after superyacht sinks off Sicily

Mike lynch, a 59-year-old british technology entrepreneur, was among the six missing passengers who were aboard the bayesian, a yacht that sank in sicily, italy..

Portrait of Jonathan Limehouse

Six people remain missing after a luxury superyacht sank off the coast of Palermo in Sicily, Italy on Monday, including British technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch.

Lynch, 59, was aboard the Bayesian, an 184-foot-long British-registered sailboat that sank into the water right before sunrise. While six individuals are missing — including American, British and Canadian nationals — one person has been confirmed deceased from the sinking that capsized the yacht's 22 passengers, Italy's coast guard said in a statement.

Of the 15 rescued passengers, eight were taken to a local hospital for treatment and were in stable condition, CNN reported. A 1-year-old was among those rescued. The large vessel sank after heavy rainfall from strong storms caused flooding and landslides in parts of Italy.

Prosecutors in a town near Palermo have since opened an investigation into the events leading up to the sinking, which may shed some light on why Lynch was aboard the superyacht. Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was one of the rescued passengers, the BBC reported.

Here is what we know about Lynch.

What companies did Mike Lynch found?

In 1996, Lynch co-founded the Autonomy Corporation, an enterprise software company now known as HP Autonomy. He also founded Invoke Capital , a venture capital fund.

Through Invoke Capital, Lynch became a co-founder of Darktrace, a British cyber security company established in 2013 and headquartered in Cambridge, England.

Why was Mike Lynch charged with fraud?

Soon after Lynch sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $11 billion in 2011, a sale in which he made around $800 million, he was hit with civil and criminal charges.

In November 2012, HP announced an $8.8 billion writedown of assets and claimed Autonomy artificially inflated its value by hiding "serious accounting improprieties, disclosure failures and outright misrepresentations," the Guardian reported.

Although the UK Serious Fraud Office ended its investigation of the sale due to insufficient evidence, Lynch and Stephen Chamberlain, former vice president of finance at Autonomy, were indicted for fraud in the U.S. in November 2018. Sushovan Hussain , Autonomy's former finance chief officer, was found guilty of fraud in 2018 and sentenced to five years in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California .

HP won a civil action in the High Court in London in January 2022 against Lynch and Hussian, the BBC reported. Damages were to be decided later, with the judge saying the amount would be "significantly less" than the $5 billion claimed by HP, according to the outlet.

Was Mike Lynch found guilty?

Lynch was extradited to the US in May 2023 to face 16 counts of wire fraud, securities fraud and conspiracy. He and Chamberlain, who was charged with 15 counts of wire fraud and conspiracy, pleaded not guilty.

On June 6, 2024, the men were found not guilty of all charges.

Lynch told BBC Radio 4 in August that although he knew he was innocent at the onset of this 11-week trial, he felt his wealth allowed him to prove his case in U.S. court.

"You shouldn't need to have funds to protect yourself as a British citizen," he said.

Stephen Chamberlain on life support

On Saturday, two days before Lynch's disappearance, Chamberlain was seriously injured in a road accident, Reuters reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.

Chamberlain was struck by a car in Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning and was placed on life support, the person said, per Reuters.

Meet the brand redefining luxury sailing in indonesia.

Rascal Voyages in Raja Ampat, Indonesia

A brand born to celebrate the inner child in each of us, Rascal Voyages offers the most fun you can have sailing on a boat through Indonesia’s vast archipelago, all while discovering its rich biodiversity and marine life. “We all have an inner rascal inside each of us, and it wants to play and explore,” explains Steve Ebsworth, one of the co-founders of the company.

The Bow Lounge

Ebsworth, a British entrepreneur who moved to southeast Asia 15 years ago, spearheaded a concept “experiential investment projects” together with two friends and business partners, Tom Wheeler and Erik Barreto. From commercial real estate and hospitality to travel and tourism, they see potential to bring purposeful, luxury experiences to the region.

They invested in land banking in remote destinations of the country and quickly realized they were sitting on another opportunity. “Indonesia has 18,000 islands but most of them haven’t been discovered because the infrastructure isn’t there. There aren’t bridges or airports. The only way is by boat.”

Rascal Voyages

DNC Day 1: Biden Delivers Emotional Closing Speech After Hillary Clinton And Harris Hail His ‘Historic Leadership’

‘the acolyte’ reportedly cancelled ahead of season 2, which is no great shock, nyt ‘strands’ hints, spangram and answers for tuesday, august 20th.

Enter: Rascal Voyages.

The company currently operates two luxury Phinisi yachts, an upscale version of a traditional wooden Indonesian sailboat. These yachts, named Rascal and Rebel, embody modern luxury, and a third vessel, Rogue, is under construction. With panoramic roof decks, five spacious cabins each and comfortable lounge areas with coastal furnishings, the yachts are truly luxurious vessels.

“They’re floating villas,” explains Steve. “We removed the mast and sails to free up space, so all our cabins are above deck. The boats are light and airy, not claustrophobic.” Rebel even has a built-in wine cellar. “I was like a kid in a candy shop. I kept pushing to see what was possible,” he says. Other fun features include an outdoor cinema and roof deck golf with biodegradable fish-food golf balls.

“Barefoot luxury” is a term that gets thrown around a lot, but when you spend a week sailing around Indonesia with Rascal Voyages, it feels perfectly fitting.

The Master Cabin

“We really want people to celebrate life and enjoy it to the fullest,” explains Steve. “You don’t get too many surprises when you’re an adult, so we’ve infused the journeys with unexpected experiences along the way. Of course, we also surprise guests with unique itineraries. We take you places you wouldn’t be able to get to on your own — in total privacy, safety and comfort,” he says.

Most of Indonesia’s 18,000 islands have never been explored, but the team brings talent and expertise with them. “We can set up barbecues, beach clubs and picnics on remote beaches,” he says. “Almost anything is possible.”

Sunset canapés

Rascal Voyages offers personalized, private charters across Indonesia, with its most popular itineraries being Komodo National Park, Raja Ampat, the Ring of Fire and the Spice Islands. These charters are ideal for families or a group of friends as they are all-inclusive for up to 10 guests. The company also hosts monthly cabin voyages in these destinations with rates starting at $2,500.

Rascal Voyages caters to more than just divers, and itineraries cover land experiences as well. Komodo National Park is famous for its Komodo dragons, though guests can look forward to treks, sunbathing on a remote pink beach and diving with manta rays and sea turtles. Raja Ampat, which has some of the world's most diverse marine life, is home to dolphins, reef sharks and pygmy seahorses. Rainforest hikes, a pop-up dinner on a secluded beach and bird watching are some of the additional activities that guests can enjoy.

Diving in Raja Ampat

“We’re like a small hotel,” says Steve. “We have a full-time crew that lives on the boat. Luxury isn’t just about the amenities; it’s about the people who create the experience. You can’t reach a certain level of luxury if people aren’t used to working with each other or know where everything is. This boat is their home.”

The crew hails from different corners of Indonesia, save for the voyage managers who hail from Spain, England and France, and everyone lives on board full-time, ensuring a seamless hospitality experience. The voyage managers function like general managers of a hotel, and they’re also dive instructors and marine biologists who provide valuable context and educational presentations during the stay on board.

The Rascal Voyages crew

As a luxury brand with an ambitious vision, the company strives to deliver the most memorable experience to guests thanks to frequent trainings and consistent oversight among its fleet. But for guests on board, the experience is seamless and relaxed. Breakfast is served à la carte, offering a range of international and Indonesian specialties, while lunch and dinner are served family-style, according to a Mediterranean ethos: fresh, local and simple.

“Food is such an important experience, it’s one of our key pillars as a company,” says Steve. “We’ve spent a lot of time developing interesting dishes that infuse Balinese and Asian spices into international recipes. We love local flavors, so we also use recipes from the grandmothers of members of our crew.” A selection of sambals adds unique flavor to dishes and pairs well with international and local foods alike.

Left: Rascal Voyage's Head Chef, Gusti. Right: Grilled lamb.

Each evening starts with sunset canapés and cocktails on the roof deck before gathering around the dining table. One night may feature an Indonesian Rijsttafel with a spread of slow-braised beef, minced chicken sate, sautéed long beans and yellow turmeric rice. Another night may focus on Italian cuisine, with linguini with prawns, an arugula salad and confit duck.

With a friendly, attentive crew and the flexibility to personalize your experience, this is the epitome of slow, luxury living. “You can do morning yoga, then have a cheeseburger and enjoy a bottle of Dom Perignon. Or you can opt for a picnic, eat on the roof of the boat, whatever you want goes,” says Steve. “At Rascal Voyages we want you to feel like you’re at home, with friends.”

S# first appeared (that we know of) in TellTales, April 1988, "On a Scale of One to Ten" by A.P. Brooks . The equation incorporates SA/Disp (100% fore triangle) and Disp/length ratios to create a guide to probable boat performance vs. other boats of comparable size. For boats of the same length, generally the higher the S#, the lower the PHRF.
