The Mediterranean Yachting Season: A Comprehensive Guide

Whether you are a Yacht crew member, sailor or yacht owner, the Mediterranean Yachting Season is an alluring destination.

Idyllic coastlines flanked with picture-perfect beaches, delicious food, wine, and a host of cultural experiences make the Mediterranean a hotspot for the Yachting elite.

Unlike in the Caribbean and USA, yachting in the Mediterranean has a very specific time frame in which it operates, May to October. In order to increase your chances of finding a job, it is important to know where to be and when.

Here we will explore everything you need to know about the Mediterranean Yacht Season. From crew agents, marinas, accommodation, timing, transport, and key events to look out for.

When is the Mediterranean Yachting Season?

The Mediterranean Yachting Season runs from May to October. This is known as the Summer season (in the Northern Hemisphere), and these are the best months for cruising around the Mediterranean.

The Best Locations for you to Join the Mediterranean Yachting Season

There are a few locations where you can choose to position yourself if you are trying to find a job on a yacht.

Antibes (France) – The Best Location for Green Crew Entering the Yachting Industry

Antibes is one of the main yachting hubs in the Mediterranean.

Here you will find an abundance of crew housing options and an amazing network of crew agents located in the famous Port Vauban.

You also have access to the train which will take you down to Cannes or up as far as Genoa. So if any job opportunities or interviews come up, you can be there easily within hours. This is one of the main attractions of Antibes for job seekers.

It is a great idea to head out to some of the smaller marinas in Antibes as well as along the French Riviera while seeking work. Some of these marinas don’t have as strict security as you will find in Antibes.

Marinas in the French Riviera to Visit while Seeking Work for the Mediterranean Yachting Season

  • Port Vauban: the main marina right off the Old Town of Antibes
  • Antibes Marina
  • Port Gallice (Juan-Les-Pins): walking distance from the Old Town
  • Port Pierre Canto: home to the Cannes Film Festival
  • Port de Cannes Marina (Cannes)
  • Port Hercule (Monaco): one of the most famous marinas in the world
  • Fontveille Marina (Monaco)
  • Port de Cap d’Ail (Cap d’Ail): Located between Monaco and Nice, this is a popular Super Yacht location
  • Marina La Ciotat (Port Vieux)
  • Port de Beaulieu-sur-Mer (Beaulieu-sur-Mer)

Antibes itself is in fact a small town, however the Yachts pack up in the marinas at the start of the season so there will be a lot of other crew seeking work.

If you choose to head to Antibes before the season starts, you will need to book your accommodation far in advance!

If you are new to dock walking and feeling uncertain, check out my post on Dock Walking – 9 Tips to Increase Your Chances of Getting a Job .

Antibes Crew Houses

Crew houses are a fantastic way for Crew to network with other Crew members, as well as a cheaper option for accommodation while seeking work.

A few of your best Antibes Crew houses are:

  • The Crew Grapevine
  • Debbie’s Crew House
  • The Crew House
  • The Glamorgan
  • Amma’s Crew House

For more detailed information on each of these crew houses with rates and booking information, check out my post on the 7 Best Antibes Crew Houses: Where to stay for first-timers.

Antibes Crew Agents

One of your best entries into the Mediterranean Yachting Season is through Yacht Crew Agents. These recruitment agencies are dedicated to placing crew on Yachts.

Once you have gone through the process of signing up online, it is a great idea to arrange an interview so they can meet you face-to-face.

A few of my favorite Yacht Crew Agencies in Antibes are:

  • Luxury Yacht Group
  • Hill Robinson Crew
  • The Crew Network
  • Northrop and Johnson
  • Blue Water Crew

Getting around Antibes

If you are located in Old Town Antibes, you can easily walk around the port. However, you may want to get yourself a bike or e-scooter to save your energy while walking between all the marinas.

Uber is an easy way to get around however it is not cheap if you are on a budget.

If you are looking to travel around the French Riviera, the train is a fantastic and easy option.

The Gare d’Antibes Train station is only a 15-minute walk from the old town. The most common train service on this route is operated by TER (Transport Express Régional) and connects Antibes to Monaco. The journey involves one transfer at Nice so be sure to check your destination.

Prices vary but you can expect to spend €6-€20 for a ticket depending on your destination.

Gare d’Antibes can be found at: 11 Avenue Robert Soleau, 06600 Antibes, France

Events to look out for near Antibes

If a Yacht is involved in a big event, the crew will always need extra assistance. So be sure to head over to these Marinas before these events and hand out your CV!

sailing boats and motor yachts docked in a marina during the Mediterranean yachting season in Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca (Spain) – Home to the Start of the Mediterranean Yachting Season

Palma is a Spanish island in the Balearics and a very popular destination for Yachts and crew alike. In fact, it is so popular that many yacht crew choose to call it home when they leave the yachting industry.

Palma is known to have a wide range of Yachts including both motor and sailing vessels.

Marinas in Palma de Mallorca

The best locations for dock walking in Palma are the various marinas in the Bay of Palma, Puerto Portals and Port Adriano.

Marinas in the bay of Palma to name a few include:

  • Club de Mar
  • Marina Moll Vell – Home to the International Yacht show
  • La Lonja Marina Charter
  • Marina Port de Mallorca
  • Puerto Palma

I must point out however that it is not easy to dock walk in Palma. The marinas are gated and security is tight. If you walk over with confidence and look the part, you may just get in.

Ideally, you want to know a Yacht or crew member in the marina. Network, network, network!

Crew Houses in Palma

If you are going to seek work in Palma, then your ideal locations to stay are Santa Catalina, La Lonja, or the Old town.

As with any popular Yachting destination, you will need to book your accommodation well in advance.

Some popular crew housing options in Palma are:

  • Crew Guest House Palma
  • The Boathouse Palma
  • Caimari Crew Accommodation
  • Hostal Apuntadores (A hostel option if the crew houses are booked)
  • Monzly Rentals (A great option for short to medium-term rentals)

Palma Crew Agents

Given that dock walking in Palma can be a little tricky, you want to emphasise getting signed up to the crew agencies. Take your time and try to get a face-to-face interview if possible.

Some of you may have already signed up with these agencies. Remember to log in regularly, and change your location if you moved since your last login!

  • Sovren Crew
  • Van Allen Crew Agency
  • Global Crew Services
  • Hill Robinson
  • A-Z Yachting

Getting Around Palma de Mallorca

Getting around Palma couldn’t be easier. The good old Bus. It is easy, cheap, and efficient.

You will want to use the EMT bus as there are an abundance of bus stops and they travel all through the city.

The fare for the EMT bus is €2, and they take CASH ONLY.

Please note that in the summer months, these buses get very busy, and sometimes they will pass bus stops if they are too full. If you have an interview or job lined up, be sure to head out early to allow for delays.

Palmas Big Events during the Mediterranean Yachting Season

The Palma International Boat Show is known to inaugurate the Mediterranean Yachting Season. This 4-day event hosts spectacular yachts both for sale and for charter.

The Yacht show usually happens at the end of April and marks the start of the Mediterranean Season.

You can expect to see over 250 boats on display during the show so the month leading up to this time would be an excellent opportunity for day work.

Timing for the Mediterranean

If you are looking for work in the Mediterranean, you can head over as early as February/March! There will be 2 categories of vessels to look out for:

The Yachts that Spent the Winter Season in the Yard

When the Winter season hits in the Mediterranean, it becomes bitterly cold and rainy. Some owners choose to leave their vessels in the Yard during the winter months.

Most yacht crew choose to leave these programs in the winter and these boats will run on skeleton crew.

Therefore, in February/March, these boats will start hiring crew again in order to start getting the boat operating and ready for the upcoming season.

Yachts that Head Over from the Caribbean

These vessels went to the Caribbean for the Winter and now they are crossing the Atlantic and making their way back to the Mediterranean to start a new season.

As these vessels arrive in March/April, they will need a lot of extra help getting cleaned and organized after the big ocean crossing they just did.

These vessels may also see crew changes as they head into a new season.

My advice here is to get onto Marine Traffic . Depending on where you have located yourself, you will be able to see as vessels are entering the harbor. You should make a point of being available to offer help as they arrive.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Caribbean, check out my post on The Caribbean Yachting Season: Ultimate Guide.

Visas and Passports Required for the Mediterranean Yachting Season

If you are not a European citizen, it is important to understand how you can get into Europe and how much time you can stay there. Your visa requirements will depend on your personal home country and passport.

For more detailed information on your personal requirements, go to the Schengen Visa Website.

A Schengen visa is a short-stay visa that allows a person to travel to any member of the Schengen Area, per stay for up to 90 days for tourism or business purposes (Usually 90 days within 180 days).

Schengen refers to the EU passport-free zone that covers most of the European countries.

Currently, there are three types of Schengen visas that apply to non-EU seafarers:

  • Transit (Type B) Schengen visa
  • Short-stay (Type C) Schengen visa
  • Long-stay (Type D) Schengen visa

Seafarers are likely to be issued with the Short-stay visa. This allows you 90 days within the Schengen area, at which point you would need to leave for 90 days.

Additionally, you also need to try to get yourself a multi-entry visa . This allows you to travel between the different European countries.

DO NOT OVERSTAY YOUR VISA! Keep a close eye on your days. If you overstay, you could be banned from coming back for 3 years or more.

My Favourite Hangouts during the Mediterranean Yachting Season

  • Drive the winding roads of Sa Colabra
  • Take a dip at Illetes Beach
  • Take the old train to Soller
  • Eat delicious local tapas at Ca n Toni in the Old Town

This hilltop village offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and boasts beautiful gardens like the Jardin Exotique d’Eze.

Villefranche-sur-Mer

This town on the coast is truly charming, with a beautiful harbor and an Old Town rich in history.

The Amalfi Coast

Rent a Scooter and drive along the coastline anywhere from Naples through Positano and into Amalfi. Stroll through the bougainvillea-lined streets and have lunch down near the port.

History and Culture

Ancient ruins at sunset in charter location greece

The Mediterranean sea is connected to the Atlantic Ocean, bordering more than 22 different countries, and over 3,000 islands, the largest two being the Italian islands of Sicily and Sardinia.  Its name comes from two Latin words: 'Medius” (Middle) and “Terra” (Earth/Soil), roughly translated as the center of the Earth, and the sea itself is thought to be more than 5 million years old.

In terms of Mediterranean culture, there isn't a one size fits all approach — each and every country in the region has their own. But we can say that there are some overarching themes: an appreciation of the finer things in life being one of them: of nature and of cuisine.

Types of Yacht Charters in the Mediterranean

A luxury crewed  yacht rental vacation in the Mediterranean is without a doubt the best way to lap up the natural splendor of this magical region, offering you access to a dizzying array of splendid spots far from the typical tourist trail.

With an extensive selection of vessels available to choose from, the perfect yacht for you and your charter party is destined to be out there. Unsure whether a crewed motor yacht charter, sailing yacht charter, or in some cases, a gulet charter will work best for you? We've laid out the main aspects to consider before making a final decision.

Motor Yacht Charters in the Mediterranean

range of charter motor yachts docked at portofino, italy

A crewed motor yacht charter  in the Mediterranean is the epitome of luxury. With seven-star amenities and hotel-serviced living coupled with a completely unrivaled level of privacy, it's no wonder a motor yacht has evergreen appeal. Uncover awe-inspiring that are only accessible by boat, and experience what it's like to have your own floating palace.

There is a huge variety of Mediterranean motor yachts available, from 100m superyachts with all the latest charter-focused amenities to small speedy weekend cruisers, or somewhere in between. But do keep in mind when selecting your motor yacht that slips here are in high demand during the summertime, which means it's more likely you will spend time at anchor.

As for yacht types, those with planing hulls are perfect if you want to zip through locations at speed quickly. However, they are usually less stable at anchor.

Displacement and semi-displacement hulls are slower and make up most of the global charter fleet, They are more comfortable, voluminous, and more stable with at anchor stabilizers.

Sailing Yacht Charters in the Mediterranean

marina in porto cervo italy

Selecting a luxury crewed  sailing yacht charter in the Mediterranean is a wonderful choice for guests looking for a slower vacation pace, where you will be wooed by the sailing yacht's old-school charm. Plus, with most sailing conditions in the Mediterranean being extremely favorable, typified by calm seas and light winds (apart from the Meltemi at certain times in Turkey and Greece), this is absolutely a sailing paradise.

And with an extensive selection of catamarans, monohulls and racer sailers available, it won't be difficult to find a charter sailing yacht in the Mediterranean that will meet your requirements.

Gulet Charters in the Mediterranean

Turkish Gulets blue water cruising

In  Turkey  & Croatia you also have an additional charter option: the possibility of renting a gulet  with a full crew. Gulets are traditionally Turkish-built wooden motor sailor yachts which are usually much larger in volume than your average sailing yacht, with an abundance of open-plan living spaces.

Turkish gulet yachts are less expensive than other charter vessels of the same size, and can often offer all-inclusive or semi-inclusive packages, meaning you don’t need to worry about additional expenses such as food and drink. They also normally include a standard number of cruising hours per day.  Plus, their crew are often local to the region that they cruise in, meaning they can double as tour guides and can provide a lot of valuable expertise.

You can visit Greek Islands on your Turkish gulet charter vacation, but you will need to embark and disembark in a port in Turkey unless it has a Greek Charter Licence - which is very rare.

Gulets are not available in the West Mediterranean cruising areas.

How Much Does It Cost to Charter a Yacht in the Mediterranean?

The average price of a motor yacht or sailing yacht rental in the Mediterranean will depend on several factors, including the vessel's age, type, crew, as well as the duration of the vacation and whether it is high or low season.

With so many options available, there’s something to suit every type of budget. For convenience we have listed the average prices for motor yacht and sailing yacht charters in the Mediterranean below;

  • For motor yacht rentals in the Mediterranean, prices can range from $31,541 to $1.6m per week, plus expenses
  • For luxury sailing yacht rentals in the Mediterranean, prices can go from $20,491 to $532,784 weekly, plus expenses

One aspect to keep in mind is that there are important distinctions to be made between the average costs for West Mediterranean and East Mediterranean yachting vacations. While exact costs can vary from yacht to yacht, typically, West Mediterranean yacht charters will involve newer, larger vessels and include a high-quality, international workforce, and therefore tend to usually incur higher prices. Meanwhile, East Mediterranean yacht charters will usually use older vessels and feature highly knowledgeable local crews.

When is the Best Time for Mediterranean Yacht Charters?

Traditional colourful Greek fishing boats in Pythagorion port, Samos island, Greece

The best time for a yachting vacation on the Mediterranean is between May and August, although weather is still pleasant in the shoulder months of April and September, with some East Mediterranean locations experiencing high temperatures well into October (Croatia, Turkey, Greece).

Yacht charter guests in the Mediterranean during these months can expect mellow seas, cloudless skies  long, sunbaked days and low rainfall.

However, if you are looking to evade the crowds and the heat, avoid July and August.

Where Should I Begin My Mediterranean Yacht Charter?

iconic yacht rental destination french riviera

France is by far the most popular starting point for the classic "Mediterranean milk-run charter" route (Saint Tropez to Portofino), with this term coined in the industry to reflect the most celebrated and chicest locations along the Côte d'Azur.

The best place to begin a Mediterranean yacht charter is in Nice for itineraries along the coast and towards the Italian Riviera, with the majority of guests flying into Nice Airport before being chauffeured to its port or Antibes. Cannes Vieux Port (which is a mere 30-minute drive from Nice's Airport) is also popular if beginning further west towards Saint-Tropez .

Ibiza is also a popular starting point for Balearics charters, while Positano and Ajaccio are useful embarkation ports for Amalfi Coast and Corsica yacht charters respectively.

For East Mediterranean itineraries, Athens is a popular choice for charters around Greece's Aegean archipelagos, with the highest concentration of yacht rentals, while superyachts cruising the Ionian and Adriatic Coast tend to be flexible, with charters embarking from any number of popular destinations; from Venice  in Italy down to Corfu  in Greece's Ionian Islands.

Portofino is one of the best places to disembark your Mediterranean yacht charter if you are embarking on the typical week-long yachting vacation along 'the milk run' (incorporating destinations in the French Riviera and Ligurian Coast). Guests usually take a helicopter back to Nice or Genoa airport.

For two-week-long Mediterranean charter vacations, Bonifacio is one of the most popular places to finish a private yacht charter in the Mediterranean due to its outstanding natural beauty. It boasts one of the most stunning port entrances in Europe, bordered by soaring limestone cliffs on one side, and on the other its impressive medieval old town teeters on a hilltop. Upon leaving, guests are chauffeured to nearby Ajaccio international airport.

For East Mediterranean charters, Athens is a popular disembarkation port, as well as Porto Montenegro and Dubrovnik or Split on the Adriatic Coast, all of which offer good transport links with international airports.

The mediterranean yacht charter itineraries.

Our extensive range of Mediterranean yacht charter itineraries has been carefully curated by industry experts to ensure your luxury yacht charter in the Mediterranean is nothing short of magical. Browse our selection of itineraries by the number of days you intend to charter a yacht as well as the specific regions you are interested in.

If you are chartering a yacht in the Mediterranean for the first time, we strongly recommend the classic 7-day Mediterranean yacht charter route. Also known as the 'milk-run': a term coined by industry professionals to reflect the most refined locations along the Côte d'Azur, this itinerary begins in show-stopping St.Tropez, cruises towards the Italian Riviera and ends in sun-soaked Portofino. For 14-day luxury Mediterranean charters, incorporating Corsica into an itinerary is also a perennially popular choice.

Mediterranean Yacht Charter Q&A

We advise booking your Mediterranean yacht rental at least three months in advance to ensure you get the yacht you desire. The longer you leave it, the fewer choices you will have to rent in the Mediterranean.

One of the wonderful aspects about renting a yacht in the Mediterranean is the exceedingly long season. For example in West Mediterranean locations like France, Spain and Italy, the best time to visit is usually from May until September. This balmy weather extends to well into October in East Mediterranean destinations like Greece, Croatia, Montenegro and Turkey.

For your Mediterranean superyacht charter, you will need to provide a completed charter agreement and 50% of the charter fee as a deposit. This is payable once the contract has been signed.

When booking a Mediterranean yacht rental, do keep in mind the costs that aren't included in the base rate, namely VAT and the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance). The APA is usually paid in advance of the charter and is commonly set at 30% of the charter fee. This allowance covers expenses such as fuel, berthing, food and drinks, as well as any special requests.

Please consult your yacht charter broker for any other costs you may need to factor in for your yacht charter in the Mediterranean.

Mediterranean Yacht Charters: The Full Price List

mediterranean yacht yard

A yacht charter in the Mediterranean is a great way to delve into the wonders of this breathtaking region, where endless summer sunsets await and a rich tapestry of culture beckons at every turn.

Knowing the true price of a yacht charter in the Mediterranean isn’t always as simple as it should be. The region is made out of different countries with different rules, VAT and costs of living, and the same yacht can be chartered at a very different price depending on several variables that you should be aware of.

Here is a breakdown of the prices to expect if you want to rent a boat in the Mediterranean, along with some insider tips from us if you want to sail in the region “on a budget”.

What are the factors that influence the price of a yacht charter in the Mediterranean?

It’s important to know the different factors that can influence the price of a yacht charter in the Mediterranean region. With all the variables clearly laid out, you will be able to make more informed decisions and play with one variable over the other to adjust your yacht charter to your budget .

The type of yacht you want to charter in the Mediterranean: a yacht is a broad word covering a wide range of budgets

The yacht you are going to charter is the variable that will likely influence the most the total cost of your yacht charter.

The Mediterranean region has a very broad selection of yacht available for rental, and the price range is simply huge: from 700€ a week for the cheapest bareboat rentals up to more than 1,000,000€ a week for the biggest superyachts.

In most cases in the Mediterranean, the bigger the yacht, the higher the price . Longer yachts have more crew to operate them, use more fuel and are generally more high maintenance than the smaller ones. The APA of a yacht rental is directly proportional to its base-fee, so be prepared to have a higher APA with a bigger yacht.

The demand for specific yachts can also significantly increase the price of the yacht. This is especially true for bigger / historical yachts that have their followers, and less the case for bareboat rentals.

mediterranean yacht yard

The destination (and country) of your Mediterranean yacht charter: a big influence on the final price

Where you are going to sail your yacht has a big influence on the total cost of your charter. It would be a mistake to think of the Mediterranean region as a place where prices are more or less unified.

There are big price differences between Mediterranean countries due to various reasons:

  • Regulations (VAT, taxes…) that influence transactions in general or sailing in particular
  • Labour costs : minimum salary can be multiplied by 5 depending on your country around the Mediterranean belt
  • Demand : some destinations are in very high demand with very limited offer, some don’t have this issue
  • Exclusivity : some parts of the Mediterranean are more luxurious, more private and more “selective” than others, which makes the prices go up

So, even if you spend most of your time onboard your chartered yacht, the rental price of the same boat in different countries can vary quite significantly as moorings, taxes, staff and on-land activities in general won’t necessarily cost the same.

How luxurious you want your yacht charter to be: an important variable for the final price

The base fee of a yacht charter usually only covers the cost of chartering the yacht itself. You need to add the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) on top of it to cover the variable costs.

The APA is directly proportional to your yacht (so usually the bigger the yacht the higher the APA), but also to how luxurious you want your charter to be.

If you want to eat luxurious food and high-end alcohol during your yacht rental, expect to pay a little more than if you go for simplicity.

To know more about the price of chartering luxury yachts, we highly recommend you to read “ How much does it cost to rent a yacht? “, or to use our calculator below to get a free estimate based on a yacht you’ve seen and/or your budget.

The season: the price of yacht rentals aren’t stable throughout the year in the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean is a very seasonal region , and the yacht rental market isn’t an exception.

The Summer season is by far the most popular time to discover the Mediterranean area. In consequence, people come from all over the world to travel to the France Riviera, Italy, Greece or the Balearics during that time of the year. Most prices are at their highest during Summer: hotels, plane tickets, but also yacht rentals.

The shoulder season , which is from April to June and September to October, is also a popular choice. The weather is usually pleasant, the crowds on the lower end, and prices are more budget-friendly. A good “budget vs weather” compromise.

Winter in Europe is by far the lowest season in the Mediterranean, and the best one to enjoy the biggest deals if you are not hunting for the hottest temperatures and sunniest weather.

The below example with Greece is a great illustration of weather, season and hence price variability of yachts charters in the Mediterranean.

Meteo in Greece during the year

How late (or early) you are when you are booking your yacht: something you shouldn’t sleep on in the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean region has the same issue as most yachting hotspots in the world: the boats available for rental are in limited numbers . On top of it, as we previously mentioned, the season is much shorter in the Mediterranean than in other regions such as the Caribbean.

It can therefore be wise to book a lot in advance of a yacht charter in high season if she is usually in demand, as the chances of her being booked at your dates are high.

On the other hand, last minute bookings are also a way to enjoy good deals with the boats that haven’t been booked or that got cancelled. You sacrifice being picky on the boat you rent and on planning in advance your trip, but you might save up a little in return.

What is the minimum price to rent a yacht in the Mediterranean region (yacht base-fee only)?

Now that we have the variables out of the way, here are some of the minimum prices you can expect for yacht charters in the Mediterranean region. The prices below do not include expenses and APA.

1,200€ / week : the minimum price for bareboat yacht rentals in Mediterranean

Bareboat charter

If you have the qualifications to sail a boat yourself without a skipper, you can start renting a yacht from 1200€ / week in the Mediterranean region.

At this price, you usually have a simple sailboat for up to 6 passengers, and you are more likely to be in the Eastern regions of the Mediterranean, such as Croatia or Turkey, although you can still find great deals at very similar costs in more expensive countries such as France.

2,500€ / week: the minimum price to rent a yacht with a skipper in the Mediterranean region

If you need an experienced skipper to safely sail your yacht during your charter, the minimum price is around the 2,500€ / week throughout the Mediterranean region.

The price of the skipper can vary significantly depending on the country and the season you are sailing. Some Mediterranean countries may have cheapear labour costs than others, but the demand can influence the price both up and down.

8,000€ / week: the starting price for fully crewed yachts in the Mediterranean

For a luxury yacht with a full crew in the Mediterranean region, the low end price is around the 8,000€ mark per week for sailing yacht and sailing catamarans.

Above 15,000€ / week , you start to be in luxury yacht charters territory, with longer yachts and/or more staff to add luxury to your experience.

The cost to charter superyachts in the Mediterranean starts at around 50,000€ / week with no upper limit.

Our tips to decrease the total cost of your yacht charter in the Mediterranean

There are several ways to decrease the total cost of your yacht charter in the Mediterranean region. Here are some tips.

Pick a Mediterranean country where the cost of living is on the lower end

The cost of living can influence the total budget of your sailing holidays. It can therefore be smarter to pick one of the cheap Mediterranean countries for your yacht charter, especially if you plan on spending a lot of time on-land, which can increase your mooring fees and activities prices.

Most affordable regions in the Mediterranean for yacht rental

Here is a list of regions where the cost of living is lower and/or that are less popular than most famous Mediterranean yachting hotspots:

  • Most of Turkey
  • Most of Croatia
  • Greece (especially outside the main touristic islands)

mediterranean yacht yard

Expensive regions in the Mediterranean that you might want to avoid if you are on a budget

The following regions in the Mediterranean tend to be the most expensive, which can get even worse in the highest season:

  • Cannes, Nice, St Tropez and other famous cities of the French Riviera
  • Barcelona and Marbella in Spain
  • Ibiza and the rest of the Balearics (Spain)
  • Venice in Italy

Charter a yacht in the Mediterranean during the shoulder season to get great deals

A great way to save money but still enjoy the wonders of the Mediterranean region is to rent a yacht during the shoulder season.

The further you are from the main summer months (July-August) and the likelier you are to find big discounts. Keep an eye on our exlusive offers if you are looking for a good deal.

Many yachts are simply never rented out during winter and the months around it, and so their owners are willing to discount their prices drastically for the adventurous sailor.

The shoulder season in the Mediterranean, especially May-June and September-October, is a time where the weather is still very nice, most tourists are gone and the price much more affordable. You do need to sacrifice a bit of heat and sun, but the gamble usually pays off!

A big yacht isn’t always better than a small yacht

If you want to charter a yacht on a budget, do not feel shy to go towards smaller yachts.

Bigger yachts aren’t always the answer to everything. Sure, they are usually more comfortable and more luxurious than the smaller ones, but that doesn’t mean you should sleep on shorter boats.

The sailing feelings can be very thrilling and sometimes even more intense on a smaller yacht than on bigger ones. A small group of friends or family members and an experienced skipper is usually more than enough to be a guarantee to have the time of your life during a yacht charter around the Mediterranean.

mediterranean yacht yard

There is no “one size fits all” budget when it comes to yacht charters prices in the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean is a huge sailing playground covering several countries with different regulations and levels of popularity and exclusivity.

One sure is certain though, the Mediterranean doesn’t have any shortage in terms of areas that can be explored on a yacht! With all the kind of yachts available for rental in the region, you are sure to find one that suits your need and your budget.

Malahne and Adix at the Pendennis facility

Post-transatlantic touch-ups for superyachts on offer at British yard Pendennis

The British superyacht yard with world-class refit and custom-build facilities in Cornwall – better known as Pendennis – are now into their third refit season at its second location in Barcelona’s Vilanova Grand Marina – perfect for post-transatlantic touch-ups.

After 33 years in Falmouth, Cornwall, the yard is offered as the UK’s premier superyacht facility, with dry docking, covered building halls and a large non-tidal basin. Commanding the western approaches to the English Channel and sitting at the mouth of Europe’s largest deep-water estuary, Pendennis delivers large, complex refits and restorations and is also ideally situated for light refit work on superyachts, especially those completing an Atlantic crossing. The full facilities shipyard in the beautiful surroundings of Cornwall make it simple for skippers to stop over for a scrub or a repaint before continuing on their way. It is the crossroads of northern Europe’s seaways, en route for vessels heading up to Scandinavia and the Baltic, south towards the Mediterranean or west for the Atlantic.

Of course, geography is not the only reason that Pendennis should be the first port of call for yachts in need of a spruce-up. More than 30 years of experience working with some of the world’s most iconic superyachts is also a key attraction. Names such as Adix, Taramber, Hemisphere, Aquila, G2 and Lionheart all speak for themselves. The in-house expertise rivals that of any yard in the world.

And now with a second location at Vilanova Grand Marina in Barcelona, Pendennis can also serve superyachts based in the western Med. The Technical Service Centre there offers a huge area of flexible yard space, rich contacts among the numerous local superyacht service outfits and the ability to move experts back and forth from Falmouth as required. Here, clients can self-manage or use Pendennis’s team of in-house trades and craftspeople, many of whom have years of experience through Pendennis in Falmouth.

“The Pendennis facilities in Falmouth and Vilanova both provide an ideal ‘short stay’ opportunity with technical support which can be in or out of the water – depending on the individual yacht’s requirements,” says joint managing director Toby Allies. “At each site there is very clear communication with one point of contact to control and manage the scope of works in the most efficient and cost-effective manner. This allows yachts to get under way as soon as possible to enjoy the cruising grounds of the Mediterranean or northern Europe.”

Here are just some of the superyachts that have benefitted from using Pendennis’s facilities:

Facility: Vilanova, Barcelona Type: Oyster 125 LOA: 38.14m Route: Mataro to Vilanova Distance: 30nm Time in yard: Five days Services used: vessel towed to yard, hauled out, shaft removed and cutlass bearings renewed, and recommission inclusive of assistance to the vessel to complete some outstanding Lloyd’s issues

Captain Kathy Pennington: “In my professional career to date I have not received such excellent service from any shipyard/ marina. What you and your team have developed at Pendennis Vilanova is the correct step forward for yachting shipyards and without question the right step forward for Twilight.”

Facility: Falmouth, UK Type: Twin-masted schooner LOA: 42.06m Route: Cote d’Azur to Falmouth Distance: 1,780nm Time in yard: Four weeks Services used: renewing the antifoul paint and anodes, and then servicing the propellers and other engineering gear

Skipper Charlie Wroe: “Mariette has used Pendennis for all its shipyard works since 2008. That long-term working relationship, coupled with the yard’s location at the gateway to Northern Europe, is why Mariette keeps returning to Pendennis.”

Facility: Falmouth, UK Type: Twin-masted schooner LOA: 55.11m Route : Antigua to Falmouth Distance: 3,370nm Time in yard: Eight weeks

Services used: Haul out for five-year Lloyd’s survey. We had the bottom antifouled, some electric and engineering work completed, carpentry services and fabrication

Captain Greg Perkins: “After many years of going to Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth, I find their facilities to be excellent, all services are in-house and of a high standard and the yard is located in a stunning part of England.”

Facility: Falmouth, UK Type: Sanlorenzo 460EXP LOA: 42.2m Route: Antigua-Falmouth Distanced sailed: 3,370nm Time in yard: Four weeks Services used: haul out for third-party warranty items, including welding, pipework and paintwork.

Skipper James Johnson: “We chose Pendennis due to the location as we were planning on heading to Norway. We needed a lot of work completed in a short space of time due to the pandemic, and they met all of our needs, completing all items and getting the boat back under way on time. This was a real credit to the Pendennis team and good project management.”

Facility: Falmouth, UK Type: Southern Wind 102 LOA: 31.78m Route: Antigua to Vilanova Distance sailed: 3,700nm Time in yard: Six to eight weeks Services used: haul and launch, antifoul paint touch-ups, electrical repairs, teak repairs, varnishing, plumbing, container storage and berthing

Captain Richard Chadburn: “Our experience in Vilanova has been very positive and we’ve found the yard to be flexible with us in trying to get our work done. The yard staff are all very welcoming and Tyrone in particular is great to deal with and always looks for the best outcomes. We’ll happily come back, in fact we just have, to complete our five-year rig survey.”

Pendennis has over 30 years of experience in all aspects of superyacht services, from large scale refits and restorations to short haul-outs and pit stops. Now with two dedicated locations in both the UK and Mediterranean as well as an in-house team of 450 highly skilled tradespeople and support staff, Pendennis is perfectly placed to assist the global superyacht fleet. To discuss a refit project, contact the yard directly here.

Living on a Boat in the Mediterranean – Best Liveaboard Marinas, Costs and Tips

Living on a Boat in the Mediterranean – Best Liveaboard Marinas, Costs and Tips

Throughout the year, the Mediterranean has a lot to offer sailors. Fascinating cultural attractions, crystal pure seas, and delectable food are just a few of the highlights. There are always new and intriguing sites to explore when living aboard in the Mediterranean. And, liveaboards are always looking for fresh and inexpensive spots to moor during the winter months. Naturally, you look for sites that are both appealing and intriguing, as well as a vibrant liveaboard community with which to share the experience. So, in this article, I’m going to give you information about living aboard in the Med as well as the costs and the marinas. Keep reading!

General Information about the Med’s Liveaboards

Some people spend the winter on land and only use their boats in the Mediterranean for vacations or during the summer. In other words, they might work during the winter months in order to save money so they can sail during the summer. There are also many retired couples that spend the entire summer island hopping. They do this before returning to land during the cooler months. During the winter season, these seasonal sailors tend to have their boat lifted out of the water and stored on the hard.

Keep in mind that the majority of the liveaboards in the Med have no permanent residence in their home country. They’ve made a full-time commitment to the sea and live a somewhat nomadic life, traveling slowly or quickly from one location to the next. Some go far, even around the world, while others have spent 15 years sailing in the same location. Most liveaboards in the Mediterranean find their ‘home’ marina to call home during the winter months. With severe gusts, torrential rain, freezing temperatures, and choppy waves, the weather makes many liveaboards hesitate. In addition, many areas that appeal to sailors close for the winter.

Because of their remoteness and seclusion, it’s difficult to establish the actual number of current liveaboard families. But, it’s expected that there were 20–30 in the Mediterranean at the start of 2020. As a result of the pandemic’s aftermath, many people have lost their jobs and are unable to support themselves. If traveling is truly what you want to do, then staying afloat requires careful planning… and pandemics aren’t exactly helpful.

Keep in mind that many liveaboards, save money by avoiding marinas during peak season. They do this by generating electricity and water with solar energy, and performing their own maintenance. And, note that maintenance costs are often overlooked. They clean their dishes in the sea and only go ashore to recycle, buy necessities, or go on inland tours and treks.

Winter in the Mediterranean

Storms are common in the Mediterranean winters (one to three per month on average), and the weather varies greatly between countries. The Ionian Islands of Greece, for example, are damp and cold, but mainland Spain is temperate and sunny. The low season usually lasts from October through April. In the winter, full-time liveaboards have three options: get a six-month marina contract, tow the boat out, or remain cruising. Most cruisers travel home for the winter, leaving their boat in a protected berth or on the hard. As a result, you must reserve winter spots well in advance. Generally, yard spaces are available until the end of September.

Cruisers who want to sail all year should organize their voyages. Like this, they can take shelter in marinas during the worst storms. In the off-season, this is a good deal, although locals and those who have booked a winter deal usually get the best slips. Because not all harbors are protected from all directions, do some research before booking your marina spot. Winter sailors often move east to Crete, Turkey, Cyprus, and Israel in search of dry, pleasant weather. Alternatively, going south of the Med to southern Portugal offers pleasant weather and safe anchorages.

Some cruisers spend the off-season aboard in marinas, flying home on occasion. This is a fun and economical way to get through the winter. Water and electricity are frequently included in a winter marina package. In most marinas, during the winter, the liveaboard life is vibrant. Barbecues, yoga workshops, and other social events and activities are organized by the liveaboard communities.

Liveaboards prepare their boat for the winter within the first few weeks after landing at their chosen marina. Instead of winterizing or closing down the boat entirely, they shut down sections of it and do a range of duties to ensure a comfortable winter. Most boats, for example, remove their sails, halyards, and sheets (all the ropes). By reducing your sails, you lessen the amount of wind resistance you get, allowing the boat to move less. You also shield the sails from the sun’s harmful UV rays.

Furthermore, the ropes all require thorough cleaning with fresh water before storing them for the following season. The ropes that run up the mast and through all the fittings are replaced with little ropes called mousing lines. Simply tie the halyard or sheet (ropes) to the mousing lines and bring them back into place when the new season begins. In terms of winterizing, it’s advisable to winterize your water maker because in case you won’t be using it for the next six months. You can fill up your tanks with a hose anytime you need it, if there’s a steady supply of water from the pier.

Liveaboard Life Year-Round in the Med

The strongest winds blow across the Mediterranean during the shoulder seasons. The weather is frequently unpredictable, with high gusts interspersed with gentle breezes and choppy waters. In April and May, 40-60 knot storms might occur in the Balearic Islands, Sardinia, and Sicily. Note that several large storms slammed the Balearics between August and November 2019, causing flooding and extensive damage. When the weather is inclement, though, you can still sail securely in the spring and autumn by sticking within close proximity of marinas. This approach requires a lot of patience because you’ll be waiting out storms and weather windows are not enough.

However, if you want to continue sailing and explore the shoreline you will find quiet anchorages, calm villages, and low mooring rates. As you may know, the Mediterranean becomes increasingly congested as summer approaches. There are many local motorboats, charter fleets, and cruising yachts taking advantage of the warm, calm weather. Because marina costs are rising and spaces are hard to come by, it’s advisable to stick to the many free anchorages available. July and August are the busiest months. Popular harbors are so full of people that skippers frequently argue with their neighbors about being too near.

If you want to avoid the worst of the crowds, there are a few things you can do. For instance, by the end of June, you should be in less-traveled areas. Avoid anchoring near charter bases and popular tourist destinations such as Shipwreck Beach on Zakynthos and Port de Soller on Mallorca. Mainland Spain and France , south Sardinia, Tunisia, the northern Aegean, the Peloponnese, and Turkey are some of the more tranquil locations.

Popular Liveaboard Sailing Destinations in the Med

Licata and Marina di Ragusa are popular destinations for liveaboards in Sicily. The airport in Catania is two hours away. You can sail to Greece and Turkey in the spring, or Sardinia and the Balearic Islands in the summer. Malta is located 50 miles south of Sicily. If you’re looking for peace and quiet there’s a small liveaboard community in Valletta. The berth costs are expensive, but the old city is beautiful and the airport is close by.

Note that liveaboards are quite common throughout the Mediterranean. Valencia and Barcelona in mainland Spain are two of the most popular Mediterranean wintering destinations, with many airports nearby. Cartagena is also a lovely city with a vibrant winter community. You may go to the Balearic Islands, France, and Corsica from there.

Lefkas, Preveza, and Crete are all nice possibilities in Greece. But, flights are not so many during the low season. In the spring, you can cruise to Croatia, visit the Greek Islands, or travel to Turkey. Finike, Marmaris, and Bodrum are prominent destinations for liveaboards in Turkey. After the winter, you have the option of continuing your cruise into Turkey or heading west. Most of the marinas mentioned, as well as their related yards, offer boat repairs and maintenance. Italy and Malta are, on average, more expensive in terms of yard fees and labor. You can find affordable yard deals in Crotone (Italy), Kilada (Peloponnese), and Preveza.

Costs of Living Aboard in the Mediterranean

It’s acceptable to take the boat out for a sail every now and then, but most liveaboards in the Mediterranean dock for the winter. From October through April, several marinas offer a special rate. So far, Greece and Turkey appear to be the cheapest at around €2,500 per person, Sicily at €3,200 per person, Spain at around €5,000 per person, and Malta at €9,000 per person. These fees are for a 56 ft boat and include the entire six months, but no water or power. Because the price is depending on the length of the boat, smaller vessels pay a lot less. There are also a lot of Americans who spend the winter in Algeria or Tunisia, for example, because the EU wouldn’t let them stay in Europe for more than 3 – 6 months at a time.

Mainland Spain and France, south Sardinia, Tunisia, the northern Aegean, the Peloponnese, and Turkey are some of the less touristic locations. The prices of marinas in these areas are also generally lower. Avoid northern Sardinia, the Amalfi Coast, Liguria, Malta, and Palma de Mallorca if you don’t want to pay high marina fees. Sign up for Ports IB, the local, state-run marina network, for inexpensive berths in the Balearics. While there is a cruising fee (€33 per month up to 40ft) in Greece, local quays are inexpensive or free.

Best Liveaboard Marinas in the Mediterranean

  • Kemer Marina, Antalya, Turkey: Kemer Marina, also known as Port of Kemer, is located on the Turkish coast in the city of Kemer, which is located at the foot of the Taurus Mountains in a beautiful environment. Because it is part of the Antalya region, it receives a considerable number of tourists each year. The Blue Coast, on Turkey’s south coast, is breathtaking. Along the Lycian Way, there are several scenic mountains and pine-clad coves, as well as little rural settlements and stunning treks. The weather in Kemer Marina, in the Bay of Antalya, is pleasant in both the winter and summer. The marina is also well protected. The best news for a budget liveaboard in Turkey is that marina fees were only two-thirds of what they are in certain Greek marinas.
  • Agios Nikolaos, Crete, Greece: Very nice and inviting city, close to Heraklion Airport, well-sheltered, inexpensive, and with a winter temperature of around 20°C. Note that throughout the year, people go swimming. The Marina of Agios Nikolaos is well protected in all weather circumstances. It is also designed to European standards, and can accommodate up to 255 vessels all year. The Marina of Agios Nikolaos is located in the town’s heart, providing easy access to the town’s center, the major ancient monuments, and other points of interest.
  • Lefkas Marina, Ionian Islands, Greece: The marina is located on the east side of Lefkada, within the municipal limits and adjacent to the island’s main port. The marina has a total capacity of 620 boats up to 45 meters long with a maximum draft of 4,5 meters. Wintering facilities for roughly 280 boats are also available. A full range of technical services, including power and water supply, a travel lift, and repair facilities, are available at the marina.
  • Yacht Port, Cartagena, Spain: Cartagena is a three-thousand-year-old city with significant cultural and visual significance. Moorings for nearly any sort of vessel, small or large, are available for purchase or rental, with finger pontoons for added convenience and a safer berth. With safe moorings and shelter, it is undoubtedly the safest port in the Mediterranean Sea, protected by neighboring hills and the La Curra and Navidad breakwaters. Excellent facilities, helpful personnel, and a wonderful community. It is also worthwhile to see the town. Except in severe Southerly seas, it’s a well-protected marina. The costs are really affordable. And, in the marina, there are many liveaboards.
  • Porto delle Grazie, Marina di Roccella: Roccella and its port have long been one of the best Mediterranean destinations. The liveaboard community is small but thriving. The marina lacks winter liveaboards, and the personnel is incredibly nice and helpful. The marina isn’t the most attractive in the area, but it offers excellent value for money. Despite the price increase, it is still the cheapest in Italy. Roccella is an excellent wintering spot. Non-EU travelers needing to exit the EU temporarily will find Albania to be inexpensive, safe, and conveniently located on the way to or from Greece or the Adriatic. The marina in Roccella Ionica is well-protected, with a professional and pleasant staff and excellent winter rates and free bikes to stroll around.
  • Marina di Portofino, Italy: This marina is really popular and is in the midst of a natural promontory nearby the inlet of Portofino Bay. The marina extends to the village’s little square. It’s one of the Mediterranean’s most popular marinas. The marina is surrounded by beautiful mountain views and a natural cove. It’s in the heart of Portofino hamlet, which is regarded as one of Italy’s top dolce vita destinations. The marina offers 14 mooring spots for sailboats and megayachts, as well as water, fuel, and electricity.
  • Marina di San Lorenzo, Imperia, Italy: San Lorenzo al Mare Marina is located southwest of Genoa, on the Ligurian coast. It’s a quiet, beautiful community for individuals wishing to unwind and avoid congested areas. The marina includes spaces for yachts up to 40 meters long and provides 24-hour mooring assistance. Furthermore, all basic services and conveniences are available, as well as pleasant staff that will greet you upon arrival. This resort on the Italian Riviera is recommended for retirees seeking a beautiful location and a relaxing atmosphere.
  • Marina Kornati, Biograd na Moru, Croatia: Marina Kornati is located near the cities of Zadar and Sibenik and is ideal for nature lovers. This is due to your proximity to the Krka and Kornati National Parks, as well as the Vransko Lake and the Telascica Nature Park. The Kornati marina is one of North Dalmatia’s largest yacht clubs. Finally, the marina boasts 750 berths, top-notch services, and is certified as an environmentally friendly marina. It is also a great place to liveaboard but you should book your spot well in advance.
  • D-Marin Dalmacija, Sukosan, Croatia: The marina is located in the heart of Sukosan and provides access to the Sibenik archipelago as well as the city of Zadar. Sukosan is isolated from the Zadar Strait by the islands of Ugljan and Pasman. While sailing through the Zadar Strait, keep in mind that you may face strong sea currents and jugo. The marina offers 1200 wet berths and 300 dry berths for boats up to 40 meters long, including superyachts up to 80 meters long. The depth at the entrance runs from 5 to 8 meters, while it varies from 3 to 8 meters in the central section of the bay.
  • Lagos Marina, Portugal: The Lagos Marina has also won numerous honors for its great facilities and high-quality services. It is located on the banks of the Bensafrim River in Lagos. Don’t forget to take a trip through the city’s old center, view the attractions, and sample some traditional Portuguese cuisine. The marina offers 462 mooring spots, is well-protected, and can give medical aid if necessary. The city of Lagos is well worth a visit because you can find anything you need. This is the place to go if you want to relax, view nature or go sightseeing, go on city excursions, or even go mountaineering! Keep in mind that you should contact the marina before going there as the spots are limited.

Top Tips for Living Aboard in the Med

  • Always check the weather forecast, have a seaworthy vessel, and be equipped with cold and hot weather gear. Keep in mind that marinas offer winter discounts that typically last six to eight months. So, choosing the proper marina is critical if you expect to live aboard full-time.
  • Check the weather records to see which direction the winter storms normally come from. And check if the marina has adequate protection from that direction.
  • Always check what kind of services every marina has to offer and their related yard by doing some research.
  • Can you stay in a specific country for more than three months without a visa? Is it possible to apply for a temporary residency permit? If you remain longer than three months, do you have to pay tax on your boat?
  • It’s important to check the area around the marina of your choice. Do you prefer a quiet area or a big city? What amenities you prefer to have nearby? And, if you need to fly home frequently, choose a marina that is close to a major airport and has adequate transportation connections.
  • Do you want to spend a lot of time with other liveaboards and participate in social events? Would you rather spend your days relaxing in a quiet marina with a few friendly neighbors?
  • Always request and compare deal quotes well in advance. What does the price include? Some packages include free water and electricity. In the spring, marinas with a lot of fouling frequently provide a free lift and pressure cleaning.
  • Liveaboards typically keep their boat in the water during the winter. They only haul it out for the necessary maintenance and repairs out of the sea. The haul needs new antifouling every year and anodes must be replaced. Also, a thorough inspection of the shaft, rudder, and prop is essential. During out-of-water labor, a boater may fly home to meet relatives, locate a motel, or stay on the boat and board using a ladder.

Living on a Boat in the Mediterranean – The Bottom Line

As you might think, choosing to live a full-time liveaboard lifestyle means understanding that expenses must be strictly handled. As a result, you don’t always get to winter where you want to, simply due to the exorbitant berthing rates imposed by several marinas around the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean is a great place to liveaboard . Moreover, there are numerous marinas, amenities, and a great environment to live in. Every day, you fall deeper and deeper in love with the people and the environment around you. Overall, it is fantastic to live on a boat in the Mediterranean!

Articles First Look: Art Shipyard’s Newly Launched 35m Explorer, BEE YACHT

Launched on 13 August 2024, meet the brand-new BEE YACHT. Combining sophisticated Italian design with robust Turkish construction, this compact explorer yacht promises luxury outdoor living and impressive off-the-beaten-path capabilities.

Featuring insights from the yacht design company Hydro Tec, and interior designer Michele Dragoni, below we delve into what makes BEE YACHT stand out from the crowd.

A Brief Introduction

ART Shipyard, the latest venture of the Besiktas Group, brings a rich heritage and a new level of excellence to the luxury yachting industry. Located in the easily accessible Tuzla Bay, the traditional ship building hub of Turkey, they present international clients a premium experience with competitive pricing, timely delivery, and quality construction to match renowned Italian shipyards.

While new to the luxury yachting scene, ART Shipyard is backed by a legacy of constructing high-quality vessels. With a strong background in building commercial ships, and recently transitioning into the refit sector (becoming the largest commercial refit yard in Europe and the eighth globally), they have now made yet another bold step. Leveraging their extensive facilities and expertise, ART Shipyard is now set to make a significant impact with its first fully-fledged superyacht, an exquisite 35 metre explorer named BEE YACHT.

Designed for sustained and comfortable cruising, BEE YACHT combines robust steel and aluminium construction with sophisticated and contemporary interiors, promising an exceptional yachting experience. Completing the build of BEE YACHT at their facility in Tuzla, she was recently launched and presented as a ready-to-go new-build yacht.

Touted as a pocket-sized explorer, Hydro Tec, a name synonymous with the design of explorer yachts in this size category, designed BEE YACHT with long range cruising and functionality in mind. Thus, her full displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure, carefully crafted to stay under 300 GT, deliver a decidedly robust and comfortable platform.

Exterior Design

Main deck aft: unobstructed views and flexible furniture.

The exterior design of BEE YACHT surrounds her Owner with the emotions of walking around a homely interior without any obstructions, as can be seen on the main deck aft which features an eye-catching infinity pool looking out to sea and a 40-square-metre multi-functional area leading to the main salon.

This area is designed with angular surfaces to represent the overall aesthetic of the yacht. While stylish, the exterior furniture is mostly loose to accomplish flexibility for the Owner’s needs, allowing for different uses and atmospheres throughout the day.

BEE YACHT main deck aft with swimming pool

The beach deck promises a spacious area for sunbathing close to the water with friends and family, while the lazarette allows her Owner to carry water toys and diving equipment for endless entertainment. The infinity pool on the aft deck allows a joyful onboard experience even while the boat is cruising, and at night, invites you to relax under the stars.

The upper deck is designed to host 14 guests with a large dining table, offering a generous sea view. The lounge area provides a silent and private space to relax and enjoy the yacht’s surroundings. The space also discreetly houses the main crane for tender launching, freeing up the deck for dining and entertaining. Forward and one level below, the fore deck is equipped with sofas for sunbathing.

The sun deck is perfect for hosting parties with friends. Enjoy cocktails at the fully equipped bar while lounging on luxurious sofas under sun awnings. The main fixed furniture is positioned forward, with a large bar, dining area, and forward-facing seats all below the protection of the hard top.

In Conversation With Naval Architect Sergio Cutolo

Sergio Cutolo, President and Founder of Hydro Tec, is a well-known personality and thought leader in the yachting industry with over 40 years of experience in design and naval engineering. Hydro Tec, recognised for its holistic design approach, seamlessly integrates engineering and design, evidenced in their collaboration with ART Shipyard to create BEE YACHT.

Below are insights from a conversation with Sergio, where he shares the design process and unique aspects of the BEE YACHT project after ART Shipyard CEO Hüseyin Yardimci approached him regarding the design for this venture.

Why 35 metres specifically?

“When Hüseyin first approached me, we initially started with a 24-25 metre design, but eventually decided to up the size to 35 while remaining on the 300 GT threshold,” Sergio explains. “This decision simplified construction compared to larger yachts, while also ensuring the yacht remained practical and efficient. It was a smart move for the yard, providing a bigger market, simplifying the build process, and making space for additional features.”

What were the key design and construction considerations?

“Our goal was to create a Mediterranean-friendly explorer yacht with ample open spaces,” says Sergio. “Smaller explorers can often lack expansive exterior decks, but with BEE YACHT the large sundeck and transom area with a pool is central to this. The main deck offers a ‘real beach club’ experience, with a hobby area at the bathing platform and Lazarette below for storing equipment like diving gear or surfboards. This approach provides perfect communication with the water, creating a truly unique and enjoyable outdoor space.”

What makes bee yacht unique?

“Balancing space and features were central. We decided on a 7.7-meter beam, (20 cm wider than similar sized explorers I have previously designed). This allowed for both enhanced stability and a lot more exterior space, ideal for Mediterranean cruising,” notes Sergio. “Hüseyin was intent on producing a top-quality yacht, insisting on matching Italian standards and in many areas surpassing them. As a result, BEE YACHT was built with no compromise concerning quality, with the shipyard following our specifications, including the wider beam, to the tee.”

Does the wide beam affect efficiency?

“The wider 7.7-meter beam provides excellent hull volume and greater fuel storage, extending the range to over 4,000 nautical miles cruising at 10 knots” Sergio explains. “Our CFD analysis showed minimal efficiency loss with the wider beam, while the extra fuel capacity is advantageous for long-range cruising and refuelling at more economical locations, making it perfect for Mediterranean routes where fuel prices can vary significantly from country to country.”

What does art shipyard bring to the table?

“ART Shipyard’s background as a large, stable company ensures ongoing support and top-quality refitting and maintenance services,” Sergio says. “Despite starting the project during the pandemic and facing supply chain issues, their commitment to completing the project remained strong. This yacht opens new opportunities for ART Shipyard, backed by their extensive experience and stability. Buying a boat from them comes with the security of a successful, stable, and experienced company and a shipyard where you can take the boat anytime in the future for top-quality refitting and maintenance.”

Interior Design

BEE YACHT main salon

Michele Dragoni of Dragoni Design Lab has been working as a Chief Yacht Designer for more than 16 years with his portfolio extending to some of the largest Italian shipyards. Most recently, he has given life to the interior of BEE YACHT and portrays his inspiration for this project as “trendy, modern, comfortable and open to the landscape, offering general feeling clear, light and elegant characteristics throughout”. Below Michele presents exactly what to expect from BEE YACHT’s interiors.

Michele Dragoni On His Design Inspiration

BEE YACHT 35m explorer could be described as a double-faced yacht. The explorer side is strong, and the general feeling instils safety and protection. The luxury yacht side is trendy, modern, comfortable, and open to the landscape.

The interior design reflects these exterior feelings. Some typical explorer design elements became part of the interior design too, for example the shape of the vertical windows are mentioned in the interior by a rectangular rounded shape that is visible in several different details all around the cabins.

Natural light is the focus of the interior design, for this reason all the reflecting materials are located next to the windows to empower the natural light throughout the interior. This is in contrast to the overall mood-board, which contains a lot of elegant and luxury matt materials.

BEE YACHT upper deck interior

The general feeling of the interior is characterised by very clear, light and elegant materials, from the Light Brushed Oak wooden floor to the White Lacquered ceiling. Every wall is made up of two main materials, Light Oak and White Lacquer split by a horizontal dark frame that gives an innate contrast.

Carrara Marble is a key player, especially in the bathrooms, the Owner’s steam bath, and in the staircase lobby. Backlit White Onyx is present as the background of the niches present in the cabins, as a precious detail. Dove Grey Hard Leather is located on every bedhead, in contrast with the Greige Leather. Every steel decoration is brushed, and blue details are present in details like the spot cushions.

Interior Design: The Details

In the main salon, the walls are horizontally crossed by a delicate, high-contrast dark lacquer frame, positioned at about two-fifths of the total height. Below the frame, the walls feature matt bleached oak with vertical veneer lines, while above, the panels are white. This proportion enhances brightness and allows the frame to seamlessly cross through the doors. In many areas, the vertical panelling forms sinuous curves, highlighted by the dark frames that border the ceiling and the natural oak parquet. This arrangement is consistent throughout the entire interior.

The white ceilings maximise the feeling of space, with a subtle contrast between matt and glossy finishes adding depth and interest. The door and window blind boxes are enlarged and feature rounded corners, creating a soft and inviting look. Each radius is accentuated with a brushed aluminium frame, which also appears on the niches showcasing artwork from local artists, blending modernity with artistic elegance.

BEE YACHT main salon interior

The taupe-coloured, moulded wraparound portion of the table’s bow and entrance furniture seamlessly integrates with the salon’s design. The doors highlight the bleached oak of the lower wall panelling, while the tops are finished in luxurious Calacatta Cremo marble, adding a touch of sophistication. The choice of loose furniture allows for different themes in each area, maintaining colour continuity while introducing contrasting green elements for a harmonious yet dynamic interior.

Owner’s Suite

The Owner’s Cabin mirrors much of the design found in the Main Salon, particularly the curved wall that divides the cabin from the bathroom. This continuity creates a cohesive and harmonious aesthetic throughout the yacht.

The bedhead is a standout feature, encased in dove-coloured leather with intricate 3D detailing that extends to house both the bed and the floating bedside tables. This elegant design is complemented by sand-coloured Nabuk leather inserts, interspersed with LED strips, adorning the vertical coverings and the ceiling above the bed, creating a warm and inviting ambiance.

BEE YACHT Owner's Suite

The floating desktop, positioned near the large window, is designed to maximise natural light, enhancing the cabin’s airy and spacious feel. Supported by an aluminium profile on the bow side, the desktop subtly divides the entrance from the cabin, adding functionality without compromising on style.

The Owner’s bathroom maintains the yacht’s overall interior design language and mood board, but with distinct proportions and materials. White and Calacatta Cremo marble are used extensively, with bleached oak appearing primarily in the furniture structure. Unlike other rooms, the bathroom features full-height Calacatta Cremo marble in the wash basin and shower area, replacing the typical horizontal division of the vertical wall panels. Niches, geometrically similar to those in other rooms, contain shelves enhanced with backlit White Onyx, adding a touch of luxurious detail.

BEE YACHT Master Suite Bathroom

The lobby design can be described as transformist, with distinct styles reflecting the different levels of the yacht.

On the Lower Deck, the design mirrors the cabins, featuring horizontal divisions that dominate the vertical coverings. A transparent partition made of decorative glass, inspired by Ottoman art, is positioned at the staircase. This partition serves both as a divider and a safety barrier for guests descending to the lower deck, seamlessly blending functionality with artistic elegance.

In contrast, the Main Deck and Upper Deck lobby design features a soft, sophisticated aesthetic. A squared structure clad entirely in taupe-coloured leather panels houses floating steps made of Calacatta Cremo marble, creating a luxurious and cohesive look. To enhance the sense of airiness and space, the safety handle is recessed within the panelled structure, which is also backlit, adding a modern touch to the design.

On the Upper Deck, this structure acts as a partition, ensuring the bar area adjacent to the staircase remains shielded from view, maintaining privacy and a streamlined look. This thoughtful design enhances the overall experience, making the lobby a central and stylish feature of the yacht.

BEE Yacht lobby

Upper Lounge

The Upper Lounge is markedly different from the Main Salon. In this space, the horizontal division of coverings, the roundness of the panelling, and the large blind box are dominant features.

The aft cabinet, positioned below the ceiling TV lift, echoes the design of the Main Salon’s furniture but with significantly different proportions. To enhance luminosity and create a more relaxed, lounge-like atmosphere, the cabinet is designed to be considerably lower.

The centrepiece of the Upper Lounge is the bar. It features a Corian side panel that curves sinuously to form the bar top facing the guest area, while the square operational portion behind ensures practicality. This elegant design is embellished with backlit White Onyx, similar to the bathrooms, and includes an adapted shelf inside. The front of the bar, facing the guests, is adorned with a commissioned work from a local artist, adding a touch of unique artistry to the space.

Adjacent to the bar and fully facing the guest area is a striking full-height wine cellar, serving as both a functional and decorative feature. The finishes and colours chosen for the lounge, primarily black and brown, create a more intimate and cosy area, offering a stark yet harmonious contrast to the overall design scheme of the yacht.

BEE YACHT Upper Lounge

Guest Cabins

The arrangement of the four Lower Deck cabins, along with their corresponding bathrooms, draws inspiration from the design of the Owner’s Cabin, ensuring a consistent and luxurious aesthetic throughout the yacht.

The bedheads are fully upholstered in leather, maintaining the high level of elegance found in the Owner’s Cabin. The roundness of the vertical panelling adds a soft, sophisticated touch to the rooms.

Full-height wardrobes enhance the luxurious feel of the cabins, featuring doors entirely covered in a leather weave with a three-dimensional effect. This intricate detailing adds depth and texture, elevating the overall design and creating a refined, opulent atmosphere in each guest cabin.

BEE YACHT VIP Cabin

The Wheelhouse serves as a connection between the BEE YACHT’s brand and the shipyard’s background in ship building. Traditionally, green has been the predominant colour inside the wheelhouses of the ships they have built to date, and this heritage is honoured in the design.

The chosen colours for the Wheelhouse are dark green and black, creating a distinctive and sophisticated atmosphere. Much of the furniture is upholstered in dark green leather, while the ceiling is crafted from Nabuk leather in a matching dark green shade. The vertical coverings are made entirely of black-painted oak, providing a striking contrast and adding to the room’s high-tech feel.

This specific colour palette and material choice makes the Wheelhouse a unique and personal space, blending tradition with modernity and reflecting the yacht’s commitment to heritage, innovation, and exploration.

BEE YACHT Wheelhouse

From luxurious interiors to innovative design features, this 35m explorer yacht is perfect for those seeking both adventure and comfort on the open seas.

How Long Is The Mediterranean Yacht Season?

When is the yachting season in the mediterranean & how long is it.

It is beneficial for both yacht owners and yacht concierge companies to understand how seasonality affects regional yachting activity. You need this information to schedule yard times, plan vacations, develop yacht charter programs, and anticipate demand for your vessel. Yacht maintenance programs and crew placement are also affected by finite yachting seasons, especially in the Mediterranean region. So, how long is the Mediterranean yacht season?

Mediterranean Summer Cruising

The Mediterranean yacht season starts around April and May and lasts until the autumn months, finishing around September and October. Unlike in the Caribbean yacht season , the yachting season and yacht charter season in The Mediterranean is typically affected by cold winter weather. In many regions of Europe, winter brings low or even freezing temperatures and snow which are typical conditions for a yacht vacation.

Charter guests are not only seeking out warmer weather, but also unique cultural experiences at popular ports like Croatia and Montenegro, the French Riviera, Malta, Sicily, the Balearic Islands, Corsica, and other popular yachting destinations around the Mediterranean Sea.

Yachts are typically crewing up in the early months, even as early as March. Peak Mediterranean yacht charter season runs from April to October, with July and August being the busiest months.

The Mediterranean Yacht Charter Season

April, May, June, July, August, September, October

Winter Season in The Caribbean

The colder winter months see a decrease in charters to the Mediterranean. Instead, plenty of yachts go across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean with many of them attending the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) which typically takes place at the end of October.

While the Caribbean is the traditional hang out spot for the jet-set elite, more and more yacht owners and charter guests are going to more unconventional yachting destinations . Asia is emerging as a popular destination with Thailand being the standout. The Indian Ocean in Africa is also attracting visitors with The Seychelles being a in-demand destination.

Unique Charter Getaways For The Holidays

Not everyone leaves the Mediterranean in the winter months. Some yacht owners and charter guests want to spend their winter holiday season in Europe. They may crave a change in weather or even white snow. Those who choose to stay in the Mediterranean during winter can experience world-class shopping and plenty of cultural holiday events on shore.

At Yacht Management South Florida Inc., we offer premier yacht management and maintenance services on-site or on-location at our Fort Lauderdale marina. Call (954) 941-6447 or contact us today to learn more!

Moscow - Russian Rivers and Waterways Port of Call

mediterranean yacht yard

Moscow is a wonderful city to visit, and travelers on river ship cruise tours to or from St. Petersburg spend a few days in Moscow . This capital city of Russia was our last port on a river cruise tour, and we had about four days to see most of the highlights. Our first day we did an overview driving tour and rode the subway under the Mockba (Moscow) River to Red Square. The next day we toured the State Armory and the Kremlin.

These photos show some of the other highlights you can see with three or four days in Moscow .

The Northern River Terminal is located on the Moscow Canal in the northwest section of Moscow at the Khimki Reservoir.

Most river cruise ships sailing between Moscow and St. Petersburg use the ship as a hotel while in Moscow. Because of traffic, it's often a long drive into the city, but the sights along the way are interesting, and you only have to unpack once for the river cruise.

View of Downtown Moscow from Sparrow Hills

Sparrow Hills is the best place to get a great panoramic view of Moscow. The Sparrow Hills overlook the Mockba River and are near Moscow State University.

Novodevichy Convent in Moscow

Novodevichy Convent in Moscow was founded in 1524, and was once used as a sort of prison for the unwanted wives and sisters of the Tsars. Peter the Great sent both his first wife and his sister to Novodevichy. Since the convent had such famous nuns, it was very wealthy due to the many donations of the Tsars and their families. At one time in the 1700s, the cloister had over 36,000 serfs working in 36 villages. Novodevichy was ravaged by the French armies in 1812, but the brave nuns saved the buildings by disarming the fuses set to blow them up. The Soviets wanted to make the convent into a museum in the early 1920s, but it was again saved.

Novodevichy also has a cemetery with the graves of many famous Russians, including Nikita Khrushchev, Anton Chekhov, Raisa Gorbachev, and Yuri Nikulin.

View of the Mockba River in Moscow, Russia

The Mockba (Moscow) River runs into the Volga via the 79.5 mile long Moscow Canal.

River ships sailing between Moscow and St. Petersburg on the Baltic Waterways embark and disembark at the Northern River Terminal about an hour's drive from the city. The drive time can vary significantly in length because of the heavy Moscow traffic. The river looks peaceful here, as it winds around the cosmopolitan area of Moscow.

Cathedral of Christ the Redeemer (Cathedral of Christ the Savior) in Moscow

The Cathedral of Christ the Redeemer, also known as the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, is the largest church in Russia, holding 10,000 worshipers.

The original Cathedral of Christ the Savior was built over 44 years to celebrate the 1812 victory over Napoleon. It was completed in 1883. Stalin had the church destroyed in 1931, but it was rebuilt using mostly private funds in 1999. The new church is a replica of the original. Note that it took 44 years the first time and only 4 years the second to complete the church! Isn't modern technology impressive.

One interesting tidbit is that it took three attempts to blow up the church in 1931. Stalin planned to build a huge Palace of the Soviets on the cleared land, but engineers determined that the land was too boggy. In the 60 years intervening, the space was used for a variety of things, including a year-round swimming pool!

Vendors' Market and Ski Jump at Sparrow Hills in Moscow

The panoramic view of Moscow from Sparrow Hills is a stopover for most tour groups, so we were not surprised to see a large number of vendors. The ski jump was a surprise, but Moscow gets very cold in winter, so winter sports are very popular. This ski jump is near Moscow State University and has a great view of the city. Seeing this ski jump reminded me of the famous Holmenkollen Ski Jump in Oslo, which also has a great view of that northern capital city.

Russian Soldiers' Memorial in Victory Park in Moscow

Matryoshka dolls for sale in moscow.

I thought this display of dolls was beautiful! The Matryoshka nesting dolls range in price from just a few dollars to thousands of dollars.

Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow, Russia

This small band greeted us at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow. They played a variety of band music and made us all feel very welcome.

Grand Triumphal Arch Celebrates the Victory Over Napoleon in the War of 1812

This arch looks a little like the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and it is located near the Victory Park Metro Station in Moscow.

This Grand Triumphal Arch is decorated with the coats of arms from the 48 Russian provinces. To celebrate the victory over France in the war of 1812, it also includes bas-reliefs of the "Expulsion of the French." The arch was originally built in 1834, but has only been on this site since 1968.

It is a little ironic that this arch resembles the Paris Arc de Triomphe , which Napoleon built between 1806 and 1836 to celebrate his French victories.

Moscow Metro Station at the Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square)

This station near Red Square has many statues honoring the workers of Russia.

Moscow Metro Station near Victory Park

The Metro in Moscow is one of its shining industrial achievements. Construction on the Metro was begun in 1931 and continues today. The system has over 165 stations and 155 miles of track. Over 9300 trains, traveling sometimes as fast as 56 mph, navigate the huge system each day. Almost 10 million people ride the Moscow Metro every day, which is more than the New York and London systems combined. We found the Metro to be very efficient, with trains arriving every few minutes.

Navigating the Metro system can be somewhat of a problem for non-Russian speaking riders. Most of the signage is in Cyrillic only, and the stations are quite large. Trying to find the correct exit while walking long distances underground can be challenging.

On our cruise tour, we rode the Metro as a group with our program director from near Victory Park under the Mockba River to Red Square. Several of the group ventured out on their own during our time in Moscow, and many rode the Metro. They all returned with stories of getting lost underground, but none seemed the worse for the experience, and they all loved telling the tales.

Red Square in Moscow

Red Square in Moscow is a must-see for visitors to the capital city of Russia.

The Kremlin in Moscow, Russia

The Kremlin is a favorite of Moscow tourists. Inside these walls are buildings for the government of Russia, cathedrals, and the wonderful State Armory museum.

Taras Bulba Restaurant in Moscow

We enjoyed a traditional Ukrainian lunch at this cute restaurant in Moscow before checking in at our hotel.

Buses Wait for Passengers Outside Museum

River cruise tour groups are usually divided into groups for the duration of the tour. Each group had their own bus when touring.

Military Airplanes at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow, Russia

Although much of the military museum was indoors, there was quite a collection of planes, helicopters, missile launchers, and tanks outside.

Foreign Ministry Building, One of Moscow's Seven Stalinist-Gothic Skyscrapers

Seven skyscrapers with layers giving them a "wedding cake" appearance dot the Moscow skyline. The style is considered Stalinist-Gothic.

Russian and American War Veterans at the Central Museum of Armed Forces

Meeting with some World War II Russian War veterans was a highlight of our day at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow.

Rocket Launchers and Missiles at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow

The inside of this museum is particularly impressive, but you will need a guide since all of the signage is only in Russian.

Old Arbat Pedestrian Shopping Area in Moscow

We all enjoyed exploring the shops on this mile-long pedestrian shopping area.

Food prices were high in the tourist attraction, with two small pizzas, two small beers, and a bottle of water at an outdoor cafe costing $40. Many of our group ate at the large McDonalds, where prices were more reasonable.

Female Cosmonaut Model at Star City Cosmonaut Training Center near Moscow

Female cosmonauts play an important role in the Russian space program. In 1963, Valentina Tereshkova from Yaroslavl was the first woman in space.

Souvenir Shop in Old Arbat Shopping Area in Moscow

The area of Old Arbat had many English signs to attract the tourist trade.

Centrifuge at Star City Outside Moscow, Russia

This 18 meter centrifuge is the world's largest. The centrifuge weighs over 30000 tons, and the maximum load is 30 G, but most tests are run at 3 or 4 G.

A centrifuge ride is the first test for a cosmonaut, whose entire training school takes from five to eight years. The centrifuge can simulate the extreme force of gravity that cosmonauts (and astronauts) face when going into space. A centrifuge training session lasts about 30 minutes, and the trainee experiences both the centrifugal force as well as the spin of the pod he/she is riding in. Just typing this makes me a little queasy!

Cosmonaut's Bathroom Facilities on First Space Flights at Star City

Just like in the USA, everyone who visits the Star City cosmonaut training center near Moscow wants to know how cosmonauts "go to the bathroom". They have more sophisticated equipment today, but this contraption from the early space flights is fairly self explanatory.

Star City Tank Used for Cosmonaut Weightlessness Training near Moscow

This 12-meter deep pool is used to simulate weightlessness training. The pool is flooded and the cosmonauts perform repair tasks on the model of the International Space Station. SCUBA diving underwater is very similar to the weightless experience the cosmonauts experience when working in outer space.

Mir Space Station Replica at Star City near Moscow

The original Mir disintegrated when it fell to earth in 2001. Mir, which means peace in Russian, was launched in 1986.

Marvel Paull with Statue of Yuri Gagarin at Star City near Moscow

Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space, and the Star City Cosmonaut training center was named after him in 1968.

River Cruise Passengers with Yuri Onufrienko, Russian Cosmonaut at Star City

In case you can't tell, Yuri is the one in the middle. My famous traveling mother, Marvel Paull, is on the left and Dick, a cruise friend is on the right.

A highlight of our day in Star City was a visit with Yuri Onufrienko , a Russian cosmonaut who spent extended time in space at the Mir space station in 1996 and the International Space Station in 2001-2002. Yuri patiently took many questions from our small inquisitive group.

Cosmonaut Space Suit at Star City near Moscow

Cosmonauts sit in this position on take off. Thanks to Jerry G. for the tip about the sign. It says, "Don't touch!"

Stained Glass Window at Star City near Moscow

Program directors at farewell dinner in moscow.

After 16 days of discovery, learning, and fun, we had a farewell dinner with the six Program Directors - Evgeny, Olga, Vladimir, Svetlana, Violetta, and Marina - in Moscow.

The Kremlin is a triangular, walled citadel in the center of Moscow. The Kremlin is considered by most to be the heart of the city. First conceived in the 12th century, the Kremlin (which means fortress) was expanded by Tsar Ivan III (Ivan the Great) during the 15th century. His architects designed the magnificent Cathedral of the Assumption and the Faceted Palace, and the Kremlin was an interesting mix of both Russian and Renaissance styles. During the Soviet time of the 1930s, many of the Kremlin buildings were destroyed or vandalized, and the complex remained closed to the public until 1955.

Today the Kremlin is home to the Russian President and his administration. Many buildings are open to the public, but you may need to be with a guide (check in advance).

I visited the Kremlin when in Moscow on a Russian Waterways cruise tour from St. Petersburg.

The Kremlin was also one of the 21 finalists for the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Red Square in Moscow, Russia

Red Square's name has nothing to do with Communism or Soviet Russia. The old Russian word for "beautiful" and "red" was the same; the square was supposed to be called "Beautiful Square". Red Square has been the center of Moscow activity since the 16th century when the Tsar cleared the area and allowed vendors, shoppers, and businesses to fill the square. Today this square is surrounded by the Moscow Kremlin, the State Historical Museum, GUM Shopping Mall , and St. Basil's Cathedral .

Many of the important events of the last three hundred years in Russia have been marked by parades or demonstrations in Red Square. Anyone who enters Red Square will have memories from TV or movie reels of this magnificent public square. Those of us who grew up during the Cold War era can remember the parades of soldiers, tanks, and other armaments past Lenin's Tomb just outside the Kremlin Wall. The World War II generation remembers Red Square as the site of a huge victory celebration at the end of the war.
