Hands down the best club in Greenwich. Don't expect white glove service - this is a member run club that doesn't have any employees. What this club does offer is local families waterfront access. The club has protected dockage for boats (seasonal slips with a waiting list - transient dockage available ad-hoc) a terrific covered deck overlooking the harbor, a boutique banquet room, outdoor BBQ grill section, and small/non-motorized watersports storage. For local boaters this is a dream facility - however other local families love to join the club to partake in the frequent parties for both adults and children. These parties are all organized, hosted, and run by a volunteer committee of club members. Beyond the facility and the events, the club has been a corner stone of the community for over 30 years and will continue with its mission for generations to come.

The Mianus River Boat and Yacht Club is a family friendly Town of Greenwich private boat club with wonderfully helpful members. Described as a working man's club you will find very capable hands to help out what ever problems you have. While there are often transient slips available they must be arranged with a member first then the Fleet Captain. There is a free pump out slip but limited to 15 minute tie ups. Plenty of inexpensive fuel docks at Palmer Pt Marina and Beacon Point and travelifts available at both.

Outstanding protected docks, plenty of parking, good people. Just past the railroad bridge.

Mianus River in Connecticut

Trip overview.

The Mianus River begins as a small stream. As it travels south it widens and pools above a dam in Old Greenwich, CT in a wooded residential area. It is ideal for paddling under time constraints, as it is very quiet, easy to get to, and small enough to cover in under an hour. It's a great spot to practice skills because of the absence of boat traffic.

The river itself is very deep in the middle (I've heard 80ft from Greenwich residents) and is a source of Greenwich's drinking water. It's exceptionally clean. There ARE weeds, but only in the shallow areas.

There's a small bridge upriver. Passing under it will bring you into a surreal spot. Lots of wildlife and it looks untouched by human hands.

N.B. When the river is flooded, i.e. after heavy rain, I've heard that the dam is dangerous. Be careful of drifting off the dam with excess water.

Accommodations:

There is room for 4-5 cars. There are no facilities or picnic tables. The path to the river is very steep - be careful of your footing. The land surrounding the river, with the exception of the launch, is all private.

Directions:

I-95 to exit 5. Turn left on Route 1. Pass Hay Day Market, Citibank, and go over a small bridge (you can see the river dam on your right). Make a right on River Road immediately following the bridge. At the end of River Rd, make a right onto Valley Road. Follow for a brief distance to a dirt pull off on the right hand side of the road.

Taylor Preserve is on June Road, west of the intersection with Riverbank Road, Stamford, CT.

PRESERVE RULES

NO DOGS Why are dogs not welcome? We love ours as much as you love yours. They stay home too.

• MRGP is a wildlife and botanical preserve. Dogs may disturb wildlife.
• MRGP is a unique research site. Dogs may destroy aquatic and terrestrial research.
• MRGP’s mission is to protect the Mianus River and watershed, the water source for 130,000 people in NY and CT. Dog leavings will compromise the water supply.
• MRGP’s trails are narrow and intimate, and not conducive to dogs passing easily.

Dog walk options

• Park in our lot and walk Mianus River Road. It is beautiful and quiet.
• Mianus River Park, off Merriebrook Lane in Stamford is open to dogs.
• Thank you for your understanding.

• Please enter the Preserve at 167 Mianus River Road.
• It is a designated research area and not open to the public.
• Pound Ridge Police Department will arrest violators for trespassing.

Mianus River Gorge Preserve

Less than forty miles from Manhattan, the Mianus River Gorge Preserve (MRGP) is an oasis of rich woodland and old-growth forest one hour’s drive from New York City. The Preserve was established in 1953 to protect an old-growth hemlock forest and receives the special designation as the first Nature Conservancy land project and the first National Natural History Landmark designated by the US Department of the Interior.

Visitors to the Mianus River Gorge Preserve enjoy over 6 miles of beautiful trails. Stop by the map shelter to learn about the delicate ecology and natural history of the Preserve, learn about upcoming events or our research and educational initiatives, pick up a trail map, and make a donation. Restroom facilities are available.

Taylor Preserve

The Taylor Preserve of Mianus River Gorge, Inc., is our beautiful 21-acre preserve in Stamford, CT, located on June Rd., just west of the intersection with Riverbank Rd. This spectacular hemlock/oak woodland with mountain laurel understory is surrounded on three sides by the Mianus River and provides crucial protection where the east branch of the Mianus meets the main stem of the river.

Visitors to the Taylor Preserve enjoy a 1-mile loop (no trail map needed) that takes visitors through a forest of hemlocks, maple, and beech, along the river with cascades and pools, and a view from the top.

Please Note: Cell service is spotty at best in these areas. If you come by Uber, Lyft, or taxi, please arrange for a pick-up with your driver.

Suggested Donation

Mianus River Gorge, Inc. is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization and a large portion of our funding depends on donors like you. Mianus River Gorge Preserve and Taylor Preserve are not state or town parks, therefore we receive no public funding. MRG is completely supported by private donations from members of the community.

A suggested donation of $20 per hiker is appreciated. A donation box is located at the map shelter in Mianus River Gorge Preserve or visit the Donate page on our website. Thank you for your consideration of a gift to help steward the preserves.

We performed surveying services including sub-marine topographic conditions and design of boat slips for this 46-slip municipal marina with launching ramp. We were also involved with the processing of Municipal, State and Federal permit applications in conjunction with the Greenwich Parks and Recreation Department.
