The Monaco Yacht Show 2023: A Round Up of the Top Stories

By Frances Flannagan

After a truly spectacular edition of the Monaco Yacht Show this year, we take a look at some of the top news stories from the event. From new launches, to concept designs, this year’s show featured a host of exciting industry updates.

The Monaco Yacht Show 2023 undoubtedly saw a range of exciting updates for the industry; we take a look at six of the top news that was unveiled during the show. We delve into the announcement of the launch of the first Amels 80, the unveiling of two concept designs from Feadship and Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, the reveal of Benetti's 85m project and Rossinavi’s 66m diesel electric ALCHEMY, as well as taking a look at Lürssen's 97m CARINTHIA VII following her 10-month refit.

The First Amels 80 Launched

On schedule to be delivered in 2025, the first Amels 80’s new hull and superstructure were spotted outside of her build shed. Described by Sean Bianchi, Partner and Head of New Construction at Burgess, and Naval Architect, as a yacht which will ‘stand out amongst her peers and set the benchmark for future yachts’, her launch was highly exciting news announced by the shipyard on the first morning of the yacht show.

Designed by Espen Øino, Amels 80 features a holistic and modern exterior design, in keeping with the Amels DNA. She also features sustainable materials and innovative hybrid technology, a key factor of the next-generation Amels' design.

‘The Amels 80 is a design that will not age. Her modern strong lines will look as good in 10 years as the day she is delivered. She is a big ship, full of features, with an impressive interior volume. She is everything and more that you would expect from an 80-metre yacht. There is a sense of scale, and nothing is wasted,’ commented Espen Øino.

Her interiors are custom-built, penned by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, with a neutral and natural palette, allowing for the owner to add their own personal style. She can accommodate up to 14 guests, who can enjoy a 200 square metres sun deck, a waterside beach club which opens on three sides and a wellness area and spa, to name a few of the fantastic amenities on board.

Benetti’s Full-Custom Espen Øino-Designed 85m Project Announced

PROJECT LIFE, Benetti’s new full-custom 85m, is a welcome addition to the Italian yard’s megayacht fleet. Her exteriors have also been penned by Espen Øino, who has injected Benetti’s distinctive characteristics into PROJECT LIFE’s design: the capacity to invent new lifestyles, offering varied interpretations of this concept across the decks. All spaces onboard are designed with sociability in mind, for instance, the large revolving lounge that changes its focal point depending on the time of day.

Her interiors have been designed by Francois Zuretti, who has chosen a beautiful balance between the colours and the surrounding environment, with an expanded opening that allows natural light to enhance the spaces.

PROJECT LIFE is built with all the available technologies to help reduce consumption, including diesel-electric propulsion and integrated hybrid solar panels that collect solar and thermal energy to power appliances onboard.

A Look Inside Lürssen’s 97m CARINTHIA VII Following Refit

Following a 10-month refit by Lürssen at its Hamburg facilities, the results of CARINTHIA VII’s extensive refit were revealed at this year's Monaco Yacht Show, where she was presented to the charter market for the first time, represented by Fraser.

She was designed by Tim Heywood, regarded by many as one of the world’s first true mega yachts. Kept largely hidden from industry over the last 21 years, with her interior rarely seen, her introduction to the charter market has been eagerly awaited, as has the results of her refit.

Her new work includes redesigned exterior decks, new lounge and living areas and a new 12m/39’ pool and 90sqm air-conditioned gymnasium. Her interiors are sophisticated and elegant, with beautiful wooden flooring pervading the design and neutral beige and browns contrasted with cool-tone hues of blues and stunningly clean white stylings. She is a true masterpiece and an unmissable offering to the charter market.

Embracing Sustainability: Feadship Debuts Project DUNES

DUNE takes a significant step towards Feadship’s goal of Net-Zero superyachts, combining features that reduce energy demand with technology that eliminates emissions and increases efficiency. Each individual element of the design assists in reducing environmental impact, for instance, shading windows to reduce cooling requirements, however, when implemented together, they slash a superyacht’s environmental impact dramatically.

Inspired by the aesthetics of sand dunes, this vessel reflects the onboard lifestyle that today’s owners desire, with flexible, multi-purpose spaces, endless views, and a combination of sociable open-plan areas with cosy, intimate spaces. She has an asymmetrical superstructure with almost no straight lines, meaning that spaces drift into one another, furthering the notion of flow throughout the yacht, and the heavy use of glass seamlessly blends the interiors with the surroundings.

Her design, along with all Feadship concepts, is a true joint effort between Feadship, Studio de Voogt and the yard's Knowledge and Innovation department. With a wealth of expertise and experience across all collaborators, the shipyard’s concept designs are able to be of the highest possible quality.

AWARE, The Essence of Luxury, Presented by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design

Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design presented the 79.9m yacht concept AWARE at the Monaco Yacht Show, a ready-to-build, fully operational concept with a 1600 mm scale model. Her design combines proven technology with innovation and the use of the most precious and durable materials. At the forefront of this design is space optimisation, with an abundance of space on board, vast exterior decks and an unparalleled inside-outside connection,

AWARE has been described as the ‘Essence of Luxury’: a logical step in yacht design in which all space is optimised to give guests on board the best possible experience. Sander Sinot, Designer at the firm commented:

‘For the design of AWARE the focus is on maximising the space on board within the yacht’s limited structure. We designed open plan layouts for the beach club, lounges and exterior decks that offer inherent flexibility and ample space while reducing the number of decks.’

With exceptional features to optimise the outside areas, including a beach club with a three-metre high ceiling, the interiors have similarly been designed to provide ultimate functionality and a spectacular inside-out experience. She is a tri-deck design with an open plan pavilion on the bridge deck, allowing for unrestricted views of the ocean on all sides.

Rossinavi’s 66m Diesel Electric Motor Yacht ALCHEMY

Unveiled at Port Hercules was Rossinavi’s 66m M/Y ALCHEMY, a fully custom design by Vitruvius Yachts with interior and exterior styling by Enrico Gobbi. She features diesel-electric propulsion, propelled by rods to reduce the loss of energy between the engines and navigation speed.

ALCHEMY is an elegant tri-deck design with a focus on the outdoor areas and wellness aspects of the yacht. With a spacious central corridor, the forward owner’s cabin offers a clear view of the sea, creating a sense of openness in the design alongside a strong connection to the surroundings. A special emphasis has been placed on ensuring comfort on board, in particular the minimisation of vibrations, meaning that every technical and material choice has been considered to reduce noise and vibrations.

The atmosphere throughout this vessel is calm and elegant, with every single piece of furniture being bespoke. Enrico Gobbi commented:

‘Spa mood was the keyword for the interior design and exterior decor of this yacht; natural materials, soft colours, and essential shapes for the interiors. Soft indirect lights to 'wet' the simplicity of the forms, where the detail and construction quality had to emerge and characterize the space: 'detail makes the differences' this is the motto that we have followed more than ever in this project together with the owners.’

The 32nd edition of the Monaco Yacht Show was as spectacular as ever, we can only begin to imagine the wonders that the 2024 event will hold.

"The Amels 80 is a design that will not age. Her modern strong lines will look as good in 10 years as the day she is delivered." Espen Øino, Designer and Naval Architect

The Monaco Yacht Show (MYS) is back for its 32nd edition, promising an unparalleled experience for yacht aficionados and lifestyle enthusiasts alike. Scheduled to run from September 27th to 30th, 2023, the event is renowned as the world's largest annual gathering of superyachts. This year, the show aims to be more than just a spectacle; it aspires to be an "ecosystem" of yachting, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and visitor engagement.

The "Seducation" Program: A Three-Year Odyssey

The 2023 event marks the culmination of the first cycle of the MYS's three-year "Seducation" program. Designed in collaboration with industry leaders, the initiative rests on four pillars: environmental innovation, design, yachting education, and visitor experience. The program aims to solidify the MYS's standing as the global benchmark for luxury yachting while offering an enriching and unforgettable experience for attendees.

Themed Exhibitions and Innovative Hubs

Since 2021, the MYS has organized its exhibition around various themes, including the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub and the Sustainability Hub. These specialized areas offer insights into the future of yachting, showcasing eco-friendly technologies and groundbreaking designs. The Adventure Area and the Dockside Area provide a more hands-on experience, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the world of yachting and its associated activities.

A Fleet Like No Other

This year, the show is set to feature an awe-inspiring fleet of 127 superyachts and megayachts, including eagerly awaited launches for 2023. These floating marvels represent the pinnacle of nautical engineering and luxury, offering prospective buyers and enthusiasts an opportunity to explore the latest the industry has to offer.

More Than Just Yachts

But it's not just about the boats. The MYS also serves as a platform for leading yachting companies to exhibit the latest lifestyle trends onboard these luxurious vessels. From state-of-the-art amenities to innovative interior designs, the show promises a comprehensive look at the yachting lifestyle.

Conferences and Expert Consultations

For those considering yacht ownership, the MYS offers daytime conferences featuring industry experts. These sessions provide invaluable insights into yacht acquisition and ownership, connecting attendees with qualified professionals who can help bring their yachting dreams to fruition.

A Commitment to Sustainability

The MYS is committed to promoting sustainable practices within the yachting industry. This commitment is evident in its focus on eco-responsible technologies and its efforts to address current societal challenges, including environmental conservation.

In summary, the Monaco Yacht Show 2023 is shaping up to be an event that transcends the traditional boat show model. By focusing on sustainability, innovation, and visitor engagement, it aims to offer a holistic experience that educates, inspires, and delights. Mark your calendars; this is one nautical event you won't want to miss.

Also making an impact along the pontoons, Feadship showed off its incredible style with 84m (273.11ft) charter yacht SAVANNAH . Offering an artistic twist on traditional interiors, there's an effortless blend of timeless wooden aesthetics and modern influences throughout. The playground for the international rich – as it has come to be known – is once again on from 27 to 30 September, and guests and prospective buyers alike can look forward to a great weekend, from the speedboats to submarines themselves, to all the glorious opulence of Monaco’s hospitality .

Yet with more boats than ever, it can be difficult to know quite where to begin. Whether it’s a record-breaking vessel or the beautiful and refined, here are Elite Traveler’s best and brightest yachts for the Monaco Yacht Show 2023.

Silver Star

Silver Star for Monaco Yacht Show 2023

Debuting this year is the 180 ft long Silver Star by Admiral, the flagship brand of The Italian Sea Group. With an emphasis on al fresco living – the boat boasts a sundeck with a Jacuzzi, an open beach club at the stern, and a helipad that can double up as extensive outdoor living space – this is a yacht that celebrates the beauty of the open sea as much as it does the sophisticated wizardry of a well-designed boat.

Which is putting it lightly. Prospective buyers will be excited by the interior, which is designed by none other than Italian luxury fashion legend Giorgio Armani. The interior is considerably chic compared to other yachts; expect great natural lighting, a palette of blues and champagne, and refined opulence across every corner.

With the ability to accommodate up to 12 guests across six cabins – and quarters for 12 crewmembers, too – this 164 ft long Turquoise motor yacht is something of a summer home away from home, courtesy of the beach house interior aesthetic by Kristina Ferrand.

In fact, the only element that gives the boat away from not being a Hamptons property is the vistas enjoyed from the exterior spaces, of which there is a multitude, including an upper deck with a Jacuzzi, sun pads and loungers, a bar and two tables, and another outdoor dining space below the sundeck.

Inside, owners and their guests can enjoy all the amenities of a modern luxury mansion, including an entertainment center on each of the decks, flatscreen televisions, a games room, and even a formal dining room.

Aurelia yacht

Heesen Yachts of The Netherlands is back at the Monaco Yacht Show for 2023 with Aurelia, first launched in 2011 with the idea of homage to the sports car speed and aesthetic. She was even named after the Lancia Aurelia GT, the first Gran Turismo.

With a slick exterior design courtesy of Omega Architects that boasts a vibrant and vintage color scheme, there’s more to the Aurelia than just its lashings of style. 121 ft in length, with a beam of just over 23 ft, the 2 MTU engine powered superyacht features an aluminum superstructure and a top speed of 30 kn.

Furthermore, the yacht can host up to eight guests, as well as six crew members including the ship’s captain. External features include a transom door folds down to create a large swimming platform, whilst the interior includes touches such as Linley Aston Martin chairs for an utterly timeless sailing experience.

Sunreef 80 Eco

Sunreef 80 Eco

This eco-friendly offering of the Monaco Yacht Show 2023 is a real leader in how to sail the seas in great style and comfort whilst pioneering solar energy for a cleaner, more sustainable, and utterly silent ride.

The yacht features a proprietary solar power system – a total area of 164m² solar panels that can be integrated across the vessel, including the mast, boom, superstructure, and hull sides – which allows the Sunreef 80 Eco to generate up to 45,5 kWp.

The boat can sleep up to eight guests, with accommodation including a master suite that features a double bed, a walk-in wardrobe, a television and a sofa, a similar VIP cabin, and two identical guest cabins. Copious living spaces are spread out between the inside and the outside; we particularly like the fully equipped bar towards the bow, which includes a piano and a television.

Beneath the main deck, the battery bank of custom-engineered batteries combine light weight with excellent efficiency, whilst the air conditioning is the lightest and most efficient across the marine industry.

Tankoa M/Y Grey

Tankoa M/Y Grey yacht 2023

With two pools that include a jacuzzi on the fly deck, a 144-inch retractable outdoor cinema screen, a top-tier stereo sound and the most gorgeous and light-filled of modern nautical interiors, the Italy-built Tankoa M/Y Grey was only delivered in 2023, making it one of the freshest faces of this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

With a top speed of 18.0 kn, and a cruising speed of 16.0, the superyacht features two MTU diesel-electric engines, which allows navigation in marine protected areas without risk of pollution.

The Tankoa is, naturally, great for hosting; outside of all the fabulous entertainment options which places it in the utmost tier of its genre, it can accommodate up to 10 guests across five bedrooms, and 10 crew members too.

NatPower H completes hydrogen refueling of three boats competing in the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge 2024

Natpower h completes hydrogen refueling    of three boats competing in the monaco energy boat challenge 2024  , madblue marine p-01, inocel-poséidon and cambridge university riviera racing catamaran refueled with an average of 30 minutes  .

NatPower H , the world’s leading developer for the production, storage and distribution of green hydrogen and part of the NatPower Group, announces the finalisation of the first hydrogen refueling during the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, a nautical event organised by the Yacht Club de Monaco and dedicated to alternative propulsion and hull design innovations . Making its debut at the eleventh edition of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, NatPower H aims to accelerate the hydrogen transition in boating at an event featuring more than 50 zero-emission boats.

The refueling operation for green hydrogen took place in the early hours of the morning at the port of Monaco with support from Linde. Boats served by the filling facility include those created by MadBlue Marine P-01 and Inocel-Poseidon, and Cambridge University Riviera Racing, a student team with the aim of demonstrating the viability of hydrogen as a fuel for a more sustainable maritime future, are incredibly excited to work with a company with similarly lofty ambitions for the industry.

INOCEL developed its first marine demonstrator Poseidon featuring a propulsion chain engineered by GEKO featuring a INOCEL fuel cell system. This hydrogen fuel cell boat offers performance and autonomy comparable to its thermal equivalent, demonstrating the potential for a high-power hydrogen world, without making any compromises. With no noise and vibrations, Poseidon is a prime example of how hydrogen fuel cell technology can be leveraged to great effect in the maritime sector.

MadBlue Marine is dedicated to developing sustainable boats without compromising performance. Driven by the belief that addressing tomorrow’s challenges requires action today, MadBlue Marine has introduced the P-01, a hydrogen-powered boat that is already navigating waters. The company is committed to the potential of the marine industry and marinas to transition to cleaner energy sources. MadBlue Marine is grateful to join forces with Natpower H and  demonstrate  that hydrogen refueling operations are a practical and viable option.

“ We are thrilled to have brought green hydrogen into the world of yacht racing, demonstrating that it is possible to combine technological innovation and respect for the environment. The support of the Yacht Club de Monaco was crucial to the success of this operation ,” said Andrea Minerdo, CEO of NatPower H. “ We are committed to promoting innovative and sustainable energy solutions, and our participation in the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge represents a significant step towards a future in which green hydrogen will be the protagonist of maritime mobility .”

“It’s important for us to see that the mobilisation is joint and involves all the key players in the yachting sector alongside the young engineering students, who are working together through the mentoring programme and open-source exchanges” says YCM General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri .

Thanks to this operation, NatPower H consolidates its position as a pioneer in the green hydrogen sector, continuing to develop and implement technologies that contribute to reducing the environmental impact of yachting.

NatPower H

NatPower H is the world’s leading developer of innovative infrastructure for the production, storage and distribution of green hydrogen. NatPower H is part of the NatPower Group, an independent developer of infrastructural projects for clean energy generation, providing support to enterprises, utilities and investors globally. The company, boasting one of the largest renewable energy project pipelines in the world—totalling more than 30 GW—drives the energy transition process across all major technologies including solar, wind, storage and hydrogen. In just a few years, NatPower has secured its standing as one of the most prominent independent developers, with operations in seven different countries: Italy, UK, Kazakhstan, USA, Canada, Tunisia and Chile. With three offices in Milan, London and Washington D.C., the company has a workforce of more than 70 employees across three continents.
