Gunman at Trump Rally Was Often a Step Ahead of the Secret Service

Text messages, obtained exclusively by The Times, indicate that some law enforcement officers were aware of Thomas Crooks earlier than previously known. And he was aware of them.

  • Share full article

An aerial image of the stage and grounds for a Trump rally in Butler, Pa., with warehouses visible in the upper right corner.

By Haley Willis Aric Toler David A. Fahrenthold and Adam Goldman

The reporters analyzed video clips, photos and law enforcement documents to supplement key interviews for this article.

Nearly 100 minutes before former President Donald J. Trump took the stage in Butler, Pa., a local countersniper who was part of the broader security detail let his colleagues know his shift was ending.

“Guys I am out. Be safe,” he texted to a group of colleagues at 4:19 p.m. on July 13. He exited the second floor of a warehouse that overlooked the campaign rally site, leaving two other countersnipers behind.

Outside, the officer noticed a young man with long stringy hair sitting on a picnic table near the warehouse. So at 4:26 p.m., he texted his colleagues about the man, who was outside the fenced area of the Butler Fair Show grounds where Mr. Trump was to appear. He said that the person would have seen him come out with his rifle and “knows you guys are up there.”

The countersniper who sent the texts confirmed to The New York Times that the individual he saw was later identified as the gunman.

By 5:10 p.m., the young man was no longer on the picnic table. He was right below the countersnipers, who were upstairs in a warehouse owned by AGR International. One of the countersnipers took pictures of him, according to a law enforcement after-action report, which along with the texts from the Beaver County Emergency Services Unit was provided to The Times by the office of Senator Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa. The text messages were independently verified by The Times.

At 5:38 p.m., the photos were shared in a group chat, and another text went out among the officers, saying they should inform the Secret Service. “Kid learning around building we are in. AGR I believe it is. I did see him with a range finder looking towards stage. FYI. If you wanna notify SS snipers to look out. I lost sight of him.”

By 6:11 p.m., the “kid” would be dead on the roof of a warehouse connected to the one the countersnipers were stationed in, after having been shot by the Secret Service for trying to kill a former president.

Taken together, the text messages provide the most detailed picture yet of the hours before the assassination attempt. They reveal that the gunman, later identified as Thomas Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pa., aroused police suspicion more than 90 minutes before the shooting, rather than about 60 minutes, as has been previously discussed in congressional hearings.

The messages also add to the evidence that the would-be assassin was often one step ahead of security forces, and in particular the Secret Service.

Mr. Crooks scoped out the rally site a day before the Secret Service did. He used a drone to survey the site while the Secret Service did not seek permission to use one for the rally. He researched how far Lee Harvey Oswald was from John F. Kennedy when he fatally shot the president in 1963 — the answer is about 265 feet — and managed to climb onto a roof that was about 400 feet from Mr. Trump at its closest point. The Secret Service left that roof unmanned.

And while countersnipers were assigned to surveil the rally, Mr. Crooks was also in a position to watch them.

Even after the episode ended, the police seemed confused about what Mr. Crooks had done and how.

“So, on TV, they’re saying Trump was shot at , and he got hit, but I don’t believe that,” one local police officer said to another 17 minutes after the shooting, in a conversation captured on a body-worn camera.

As the officers in the video walk toward the warehouse on which Mr. Crooks’s lifeless body lay, one can be heard saying, “I’m trying to figure out how this guy got here.”

Investigators are still trying to determine Mr. Crooks’s motivations and his actions in the days before the rally, in part from what they have found on his personal devices. But the texts and footage, combined with interviews by The Times and public testimony by investigators, have filled in some of the answers.

Mr. Crooks already had the AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle he brought to the rally. He purchased it in October from his father, who had acquired it legally in 2013.

He began to receive packages at his house in the Pittsburgh suburbs, including fertilizer pellets and radio devices . He would later use some of this material to build rudimentary bombs, two of which were found in his vehicle after the shooting and another in his home.

Mr. Crooks had started searching online for information on famous people, including the F.B.I. director, Christopher A. Wray, Attorney General Merrick B. Garland, President Biden and Mr. Trump. He also looked up “major depressive disorder.”

On July 3, Mr. Trump’s campaign announced the rally in Butler for 10 days later, and Mr. Crooks narrowed his focus to the former president — and to past assassinations.

On July 6, Mr. Crooks typed in an ominous phrase.

“He did a Google search for ‘How far away was Oswald from Kennedy?’” Mr. Wray told a congressional committee last week.

The next day, Mr. Crooks drove to the farm show grounds, about an hour from his home. He spent 20 minutes there, investigators said. He had already registered to attend the rally.

Secret Service agents would not hold their first walk-through until the following day, July 8, joined by law enforcement officials from several local and state agencies.

It was then that the Secret Service decided to exclude the entire warehouse complex owned by AGR, including Building No. 6, which Mr. Crooks would later use, from its inner security perimeter. This meant that on the day of the rally, Mr. Crooks was able to approach the building without passing through security screening.

There is still confusion about which agency was supposed to oversee the roof. Kimberly A. Cheatle, then the director of the Secret Service, told a House committee on Monday that she did not know whose job that was. She resigned the next day .

After their walk-through, the Secret Service had asked local agencies to provide more help. Text messages show that Beaver County struggled to find enough volunteers to cover the 12-hour shift. A leader says that one of the available snipers could arrive at 8 a.m. but would need to leave by 4 p.m.

“That works,” another leader responded in the texts.

On Thursday, July 11, the Secret Service returned to the site for a final walk-through with its local partners.

The next day, Mr. Crooks made his own final preparations. He went to a shooting range, the Clairton Sportsmen’s Club, around 2:30 p.m., and practiced with his AR-15-style rifle.

On Saturday morning, July 13, the timelines of the security personnel and the would-be assassin converged.

Officers from several local law enforcement agencies were scheduled for a briefing at 9 a.m. at the Brady Paul Lodge in Butler, according to a plan shown in the text messages. The after-action report indicates the Secret Service was not in attendance.

At the same time, Mr. Crooks was at the Home Depot in Bethel Park purchasing a ladder. A bloody receipt, found in the shooter’s pocket after he was killed, showed he bought it around 9:30 a.m.

Then Mr. Crooks drove to the rally site, reaching the show grounds by around 10 a.m. and staying about 70 minutes — even as the local countersnipers were arriving.

When Mr. Crooks left, he drove back to his hometown and bought 50 rounds of ammunition at Allegheny Arms & Gun Works. Then he returned to Butler, arriving at the farm show grounds in his Hyundai Sonata at about 3:35 p.m., according to geolocation information from one of his cellphones. About 15 minutes later, he flew his drone over the site for 11 minutes, including in a path about 200 yards from Mr. Trump’s podium.

He finished using his drone and sat at the picnic table, where the countersniper spotted him.

Mr. Crooks walked to his car, left the drone inside and was soon hanging around the warehouse complex.

Unlike the other visitors, he was not trying to enter the rally site through the security checkpoints, a fact that attracted the attention of the local countersnipers inside the warehouse. One of them took photos of him at 5:14 p.m.

Col. Christopher Paris, the Pennsylvania State Police commissioner, testified in a congressional hearing on Tuesday that officers were busy that day, responding to more than 100 heat-related emergencies. There were also other suspicious people whom security officials were trying to assess at the rally, which is not unusual for such events, Colonel Paris said.

But then, Mr. Crooks did something that alarmed the police. They saw him using the range finder.

A Beaver County countersniper shared two photos of Mr. Crooks with his colleagues at 5:38 p.m., which were then relayed to the Secret Service, through a series of steps in the command center.

One of the two remaining countersnipers “ran out of the building attempting to keep eyes on Crooks until other law enforcement arrived,” according to a statement by Richard Goldinger, the Butler County district attorney, who supervises some of the law enforcement units.

But Mr. Crooks ran off, taking a backpack with him, Mr. Goldinger said. When the officer was unable to find Mr. Crooks, he returned to his post.

Four Butler Township police officers who had been directing traffic joined the manhunt.

At 6 p.m., one officer in the group texts guessed that Mr. Crooks was moving toward the back of the complex of AGR buildings, “away from the event.” Instead, Mr. Crooks clambered onto the low-slung building in the complex closest to the stage.

Mr. Trump took the podium at 6:03 p.m., to a roaring crowd.

Six minutes later, rally attendees began pointing to someone on the roof of the warehouse. Either through luck or preparation, Mr. Crooks had found a place on the roof that let him see Mr. Trump clearly, but also seemed to keep him somewhat hidden from the Secret Service countersnipers.

Though Mr. Crooks did not bring his newly purchased ladder, he managed to climb onto the roof and walk across a complex of interconnected roofs, Mr. Wray testified.

The Butler Township officers had no ladder themselves, so one officer boosted up another, who grabbed the roof and pulled himself up — to find Mr. Crooks pointing a gun at him. With no hands left to pull his own gun, the officer dropped.

At 6:11 p.m., Mr. Crooks let loose his first rounds.

In the end, Mr. Trump was spared not by the vast law-enforcement contingent protecting him, but by chance. He turned his head, and Mr. Crooks’s first bullet whizzed by close enough to graze his ear.

The former president dived to the ground, and Mr. Crooks sent off another round. The second Secret Service sniper team fired back, and killed Mr. Crooks.

The body-camera footage shows officers climbing a ladder to find Mr. Crooks lying dead on the roof: a slight man, wearing black sneakers, a T-shirt and cargo shorts. His backpack and rifle lay nearby. A long trail of blood ran from his body down to the roof’s gutter.

“Looks like, what, at least eight,” one of them says, counting shell casings around him. “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. At least eight.”

Forty-nine teams  have registered thus far for the 2024  Ida Lewis Distance Race  presented by  Bluenose Yacht Sales , and they’ll be starting the revered 24-hour race south of Pell Bridge in Narragansett Bay’s East Passage on Friday, August 16 at 11 a.m. From nearby vantage points along the Jamestown and Newport shorelines, including Fort Adams and Castle Hill, spectators can watch the fleet as it heads off to some of the most storied cruising grounds in the Northeast, including Rhode Island Sound, Buzzards Bay, Vineyard Sound, Long Island Sound and the waters south of western Long Island before returning to a finish off host Ida Lewis Yacht Club in Newport.

“It’s a fun distance race that has been enjoyed by veterans and newcomers alike for 18 editions,” said Event Chair Anselm Richards. “Fine-tuning over the last few years has all but guaranteed that every boat will finish in 24 hours, so that makes the time on the water just right: not too long, not too short.” Richards added that the Ida Lewis Race Course Development Team has plotted a choice of several courses between 100 and 235 nautical miles; prior to the start, it will determine which class will sail what course, based on weather and handicap ranges for each class.

Teams sail either in ORC (classes 1, 2, and 3) or PHRF (classes Aloha, Coronet, Bagheera, and Double handed) for top-three and overall trophies as well as special trophies for Collegiate and Youth Challenges. The event also is a qualifier for the Northern Ocean Racing Trophy and Double-Handed Ocean Racing Trophy.

Returning this year is perennial favorite  Spirit , a J/92 skippered by EC Helme (Newport, R.I.). “Last year’s race was pretty interesting for us,” said Helme, who finished second in Bagheera class and will sail in that class again. “Being the smallest and lightest boat combined with those steady, strong conditions made it a real test for  Spirit  and crew, but it made crossing the finish line that much sweeter. Being pushed a little physically and mentally is one of the reasons why we keep coming back. The Bay races generally don’t offer that, and the Ida Lewis Distance Race is just the right distance to make it an honest challenge while being ‘reasonable’ on a 30-foot boat.” (No boat in the race can be smaller than 28 feet.)

Chris Krayer (Seymour, Conn.), who last sailed his C&C 21  Salsa  in the 2022 event, said he loves the race for the same reasons he loves the Newport to Bermuda Race: “It starts in Newport, my favorite town of all time! And Ida Lewis Yacht Club makes our stay and the event a welcoming experience.”  Salsa ’s challenge will be in Coronet class, with competition the likes of  Vento Solare , a J/109 skippered by Bill Kneller (Newport, R.I.) and  Digger , a J/44 skippered by James Phyfe (Cranston, R.I.), which will be dual scored for the Youth Challenge. (Youth Challenge entrants must have more than 40% of the team reaching their 14th birthday but not their 20th birthday prior to August 16.

This is a group of sailors who have sailed the Ida Lewis Distance Race with us for the past two years (winning the Youth Challenge in 2023 while finishing third in Coronet class),” said Phyfe. “Many of these kids also did either this year’s Newport to Bermuda Race with us or the return trip.”

This will be Phyfe’s third Ida Lewis Distance Race with  Digger.  Before that he participated a handful of times as crew on other boats. “It’s a great race because it takes you offshore for 24 hours, and the fleet naturally stretches out,” said Phyfe. “You are almost guaranteed a range of weather conditions…keeping the boat moving in all conditions is a key to doing well, and we enjoy that challenge. On top of that, it’s a great opportunity to introduce enthusiastic sailors to distance racing.”

Defending Champion in Aloha class will be the R/P 66  Boudicca , skippered byRichard Moody (Jamestown, R.I.).

Rumble , a JPK 10.30 skippered by its new owner Brad Gibbs (Providence, R.I.), qualifies as a Collegiate Challenge entry in ORC 3. A faculty advisor to the Brown Sailing Team, Gibbs will sail with many of the Brown sailors aboard. “The boat is still new to me, so my goals will be to stay safe, have fun, and learn some things about sail selection and optimization heading into the ORC Worlds in Newport this September,” said Gibbs. “Looking at the names in our class, it is an experienced group. John Brim’s (Palm Beach, Fla.)  Rima98  is always well sailed and Al Minella’s (Saint Petersburg, Fla.)  The ROCC  proved itself to be quick at the Annual Regatta.”

James Coffman and Laura Hess (Westport, Conn.), on their Swan 45  Gemini II  will also look to the Ida Race as a key tune up for their debut at the upcoming ORC Worlds. “This race has been on my bucket list for years,” said Coffman, who will sail in ORC 2.

In ORC 1,  Rikki  will be a boat to watch, but skipper Bruce Chafee (Boston, Mass.) said he has humble expectations. “We’ll be sailing against some big and fast boats,” said Chaffee. “We rate closest to  Jax  (a a Botin 43 skippered by Newport’s Oivind Lorentzen), and I know they have smart brains aboard.”

Chafee has three or four editions of this event under his belt. “We remember two finishes where a dying breeze at the end foiled our bid at winning, but we also remember having sailed really well until then! It’s good to have a distance race right in our own back yard.”

White Marlin Open 2024 live updates: A battle of big tuna on day 1

Portrait of Alec Branch

The first Day of the 2024 White Marlin Open has officially arrived on Maryland's Eastern Shore and both fans and anglers are ready to see what big catches the annual tournament brings to Ocean City this year.

On Sunday evening, White Marlin Open announced that 318 boats would be competing in this year's tournament, with $8.5 million in prize money on the line for the anglers. It was also announced on Friday that this year's tournament would go for six days instead of five, extending to Saturday, Aug. 10, due to potential weather conditions.

You can follow along here for updates throughout Day 1 of the White Marlin Open, as Delmarva Now reports live from the scales at the Harbour Island Marina from the time they open at 4 p.m. until they close at 9:15. Everything from social media coverage, photos and live updates from Day 1 of the tournament will be available on this live blog.

More bigeye tuna come in as Day 1 winds down

At 7 p.m., shortly after the first two fish of the tournament came to the scales, five more bigeye tuna came to the scales, courtesy of the Ju Ju and MJ's boats.

First up was the Ju Ju, who caught a 79.5-pound bigeye, with angler Ellison Thomas making the catch. And shortly after, the MJ's brought four bigeye tuna to the scales, weighing 164.5, 150.5, 135 and 117 pounds respectively. The heaviest fish, which was caught by Bob Wilson, was good enough to be the second heaviest one caught Monday behind Mike Henderlong's 166.5-pound catch just an hour before.

But just after 8 p.m., the Ctrl Alt Del boat came to the scales with two bigeye tuna caught by Bart Marchant and Ryan Jones that weighed 178.5 and 154.5-pounds each. The 178.5-pounder was good enough to take first place on the day, and their other catch landed in fourth.

First two fish come to scales, yellowfin and bigeye tuna get on the board

After two and a half hours at the scales, the first fish were brought to the scales just after 6:30 p.m., and they were both tuna.

The first fish of the day was a 56.5-pound yellowfin caught by Mike Henderlong, which was enough to get on the leaderboard, and immediately after, Bob Hugin and The Right Place caught a 166.5-pound bigeye that took the top spot on the leaderboard for now.

Just a little over two hours remain before the scales close at 9:15, as we wait to see if Day 1 of the White Marlin Open has more fish waiting to be brought in.

Scales officially open at 4 p.m. on Day 1, wait for qualifying fish begins

The scales at the 2024 White Marlin Open officially opened about 45 minutes ago at Harbour Island Marina, with the crowd preparing for what they hope is another exciting tournament in Ocean City. So far, no fish have been brought to the scales, likely because it takes some time for boats to arrive at the inlet after fishing ends at 3:30 p.m. But there are still four hours left before the scales close on Day 1, as we await the first catches of the tournament.

How many boats went out on Day 1 of the White Marlin Open?

Of the 318 boats competing in the tournament this year, 200 decided to fish on Day 1. With the majority of the boats deciding to set sail today, fans will hope for a lot of excitement at the scales at Harbour Island Marina on Monday.

Steve Jobs' yacht collided with another yacht off the coast of Italy

A pair of yachts, one reportedly belonging to philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs and the other to Ricardo Salinas Pliego, recently bumped into each other.

Footage published on social media by Salinas Pliego Wednesday showed a yacht the billionaire Grupo Salinas founder identified as belonging to Powell Jobs and his own vessel as they unexpectedly touched.

The widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has long been linked to Venus, while Salinas Pliego is the owner of Lady Moura, according to Forbes.

Jobs, whom Powell Jobs was married to from 1991 until his death in 2011, reportedly had a lot of input as Venus’ designer created the vessel. It made its official debut in 2012.

STEVE JOBS' WIDOW GRABS $94 MILLION CALIFORNIA LOT

Venus and Lady Moura were apparently near Naples at the time of their collision.

READ ON THE FOX BUSINESS APP

"I’d like to know what the captain and crew were doing that they didn’t see a yacht the size of mine in front of them. The good thing is that nothing more than a scratch happened, but it’s a big scratch that’s going to cost a lot to fix ha ha ha," Salinas Pliego’s post on social media said.

A source who spoke to the Venus crew told FOX Business the Venus was "involved in a collision on July 22" with just crew on the vessel at the time.

"Both boats involved in the incident were anchored when the wind changed very suddenly, picking up from a breeze to 55 knots over the course of a few minutes. Neither boat dragged anchor, though the other boat was on a chain double the length expected in the depth of water they were in," the source said. "Both captains were in discussions immediately following the incident about minor repairs needed."

Grupo Salinas told FOX Business Lady Moura was anchored "at a depth of 40 meters with seven shackles of chain deployed, which is the minimum required for safe anchoring under the given conditions." It suggested the Venus "misjudged the length of the chain" Lady Moura had in the water and said Lady Moura's crew made "numerous efforts" to alert Venus via whistle and radio that weren't successful.

"Within hours, both parties resolved the situation amicably and professionally," the company said.

Both Salinas Pliego's Lady Moura, at 105 meters (344 feet), and the Venus, at 78 meters (256 feet), are massive yachts.

Salinas Pliego’s vessel has a helicopter landing pad toward the back, according to the Superyacht Times. It is reportedly the 75th-largest yacht in the world.

Venus, meanwhile, comes in at 209th largest, the Superyacht Times reported.

Some 10,800 yachts of various sizes exist globally.

Joystick Arcade toasts to a new era as Alley Cat, a multi-genre entertainment venue

Portrait of Jessica Rish

Once the bustling Iowa City Yacht Club, then electrified as the Joystick Comedy Arcade, a downtown nightlife hub has been reborn as Alley Cat.

Still owned by Corridor Entertainment Group, which also owns Studio 13, Players Sports Bar & Grill, and other businesses, 13 S. Linn Street in Iowa City has changed in name and focus only to offer a more conducive nightlife experience.

Jason Zeman, CEO of Corridor Entertainment Group, told the Press-Citizen that Yacht Club’s live music heyday was in the 1990s and early 2000s. Since the hospitality group took over in 2011, the club has seen multiple renditions of popular nightlife trends.

“Covid changed everything,” Zeman said. “We looked at what we could do that would still serve the community with live entertainment, and that is how we came up with the Joystick concept. Plus, there was no bar like that in the area.”

Joystick’s programming (which opened in 2021) was anchored by live stand-up comedy and supported by traditional arcade games like Mortal Kombat, Donkey Kong, and Pac-Man. This was a substantial shift from the building's predecessor when local music acts often performed at the Iowa City Yacht Club.

However, Alley Cat, which opened Wednesday, May 1, combines the best of both worlds: live music and comedy.

“It’s hard programming five nights of comedy each week,” Zeman said. “We wanted to make the space multi-purpose, so we decided to rebrand and pack our nights with various live entertainment more often.”

A fusion of Entertainment

The name Alley Cat came naturally. It was Studio 13's original name until 2001. Corridor Entertainment Group and Zeman thought the name encompassed Alley Cat's upcoming programming.

The bar will continue with comedy but fold in other forms of live entertainment. Allowing local bands to perform at the nightlife space and other artists like poets, will better reflect the Iowa City arts community.

“Now that things have returned to the new normal (after Covid), we got a lot of feedback that there’s not a lot of spaces for local artists and young bands who might not be getting booked at Elray's Live & Dive,” Zeman said. “And so, I listened. It’s just about supporting these local artists, whether that is music, spoken word, or poetry, because our town is known for that, and we want to showcase as much as possible.”

The comedy isn’t going anywhere.

Alley Cat will still host open mic sessions on Sunday and Tuesday evenings. An open mic night will also be held on Wednesday for musicians and spoken word artists. Thursdays will rotate through live entertainment from local bands to local and national comedians. Fridays are specifically dedicated to music. Saturday nights at Alley Cat will have a rotating variety of comedy, drag shows, and music.

The popular arcade games will remain, as will karaoke.

“Alley Cat has blossomed into a hybrid format of what Yacht Club and Joystick were,” Zeman said.

Alley Cat will also serve food after taking a year off. The service returns with a menu of typical bar foods, like chicken strips and French fries. The bar is also dedicated to having a strong variety of non-alcoholic drinks because it is one of a few downtown establishments that are 19+.

“These spaces are really important,” Zeman said. “We try to make sure that we have like with our space and have different things to do in here if you are sober or 21 yet, that people can have a good time here without alcohol being a part of it.”

Preserving a historic legacy

History seeps through the brick walls of the 100-year-old building at 13 S. Linn St.

It initially opened as a mortuary at 605 Kirkwood Ave, operating for more than 50 years, though bodies were never stored in the building. The facility was primarily used for embalming and moved to its current location in 1984.

From the mid-80s on, the building went through a variety of iterations, housing a furniture store, several telephone companies, a photo development store, and even a bus leasing company.

Scott Kading owned the Yacht Club before Corridor Entertainment Group took over in 2011 and has been committed to maintaining the charm and history of the building.

“I'm very cognizant of the past, and I do change things for the future because you always have to get the upgrade and innovate and such, but we (do) keep certain things the same,” Zeman said, referring to the signed bricks in the lower level, some of which were signed back in the 80s.

Alley Cat is open Tuesday through Sunday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.
