Oyster 495 50 Foot Sailing Yacht Boat at anchor

Unmistakably Oyster

The latest collaboration between humphreys yacht design and our in-house design studio, the new 495 50 foot sailing yacht is an evolution of five decades of iconic oyster design cues..

Her clean hull lines and wide beam aft are the foundation for the outstanding space and capabilities of the Oyster 495. She incorporates many of our big yacht features in a compact 50 foot yacht. Instantly recognisable as an Oyster, the Oyster 495 features our pioneering deck saloon, protected cockpit and helm stations, wraparound and forward-opening saloon windows. Flush decks, signature triple vertical seascape windows, foredeck skyscape windows, a powerful plumb bow and extended bowsprit complete the look.

We were the first boat builder to create a truly ergonomically designed cockpit and helm positions, with sprayhood and optional bimini for additional protection. Details like the cockpit table, with optional built-in refrigerated drinks locker, that comfortably seats up to eight people, is just one of the many triumphs of Oyster design thinking.

The Oyster 495 consistently delivers powerful, responsive and rewarding performance in safety and comfort.

Nine knots is her happy place and her well-balanced, stable wide-beamed hull form gives you confidence to keep the sails up in almost any conditions. Twin rudders make her light and agile on the helm, offering fingertip control even in the most boisterous seas. Her low centre of gravity keel offers substantial displacement for enhanced stability and handling, and she moves easily in cruising trim. Carrying significant sail power, you are guaranteed consistently fast cruising speeds and the optional sprayhood and bimini provide excellent protection from the sun, whilst improving all-round comfort.

This 50 foot sailboat for sale offers the range of innovative automated sailing technology. This includes in-mast furling with push-button controls and B&G instruments, all operated from the helm positions, making her the perfect choice for couples or young families.

The Oyster 495 features lots of space to relax and share good times with friends and family.

Her wide beam offers unexpected returns in space, both above and below decks – something you will not find on any other 50 foot sailboat for sale. The beautifully styled centre cockpit is perfect for entertaining up to eight people for alfresco dining. The aft pushpit seats are a great place to see all the action under sail. The wide teak deck at the stern and flush foredeck offer generous entertaining and sunbathing spaces.

The transom houses an innovative, push-button operated, cassette boarding/bathing platform. A choice of subtle mood lighting and integrated audio speakers let you set the tone for entertaining guests under the stars.

New generation interiors feature modern styling, integrated technology and equipment for truly luxurious entertaining and living spaces.

Oyster Yachts 495 Interior Luxury

Contemporary luxury and comfort

The oyster 495 benefits from our new generation luxury, contemporary interiors that elevates her above the best 50 foot yachts..

With four interior designed themes, 495’s interiors set a new standard in her class. The well-equipped, seaworthy, u-shaped galley, saloon and cabins are well-proportioned, comfortable and luxurious. Her wide beam aft offers unexpected space compared to any other 50 foot yacht for sale.

She is eminently practical, making her perfect for liveaboard adventures. Intelligent interior space planning, combining insights and the acclaimed craftsmanship from our larger yachts, makes use of every inch of hull volume. The tasteful choice of materials, fabrics and integrated technology throughout, along with modern styling, creates truly luxurious entertaining and living spaces. The impressive owner’s cabin, with its deep luxury mattress, has excellent headroom and signature triple seascape windows, creating an amazing feeling of space and light throughout the new Oyster 495. Our new mood lighting system creates a perfect interior environment.

Like all our yachts, the new Oyster 495 is handcrafted by master craftspeople with a meticulous attention to detail, and a deep sense of pride and passion.

The learnings of half a century of designing and building bluewater cruisers feed into every detail, and the insights of our owners, skippers and crew, sailors and our own team help fine-tune every aspect of the design and build. The result is a unique combination of design, technology, engineering and hand-crafted build quality. Beautiful hardwoods run throughout every inch of this exquisite 50 foot sailboat, in everything from hand-built furniture to intuitively placed grab rails. This focus on detail reveals itself in the beautiful, hand-crafted cabinetry and the easily accessible, carefully labelled cables and pipework that run behind the scenes to make maintenance tasks simple.

The Oyster 495 is a truly connected 50 foot yacht with all the latest technology you need to stay in touch, however remote your location.

Not only does it make her an ideal liveaboard yacht, but it also makes her a work-aboard yacht. Every system is chosen for its ruggedness and fitness for purpose. The chart table is a technology hub, featuring an optional, innovative, foldout, integrated PC; lift-top desk; plotter; VHF and SSB radios; power management; generator control; switchboard; and plenty of power sockets. Oyster’s proprietary digital switching system – Oyster Command™ – lets you monitor and control various systems over a digital network and touchscreen. Optional WIFI can be accessed through the latest satellite technology, or 4G/5G cellular antenna when close to onshore radio masts. Entertainment systems are seamlessly integrated, with a concealed saloon TV and audio running throughout the boat.

2023 Cruisers Yachts 50 GLS

  • By Boating Tech Team
  • December 12, 2022

Cruisers Yachts debuts its new 50 GLS as the ultimate dayboat, which is true in one sense, but limiting in another. Yes, this is a huge express bowrider pushed along by triple 600 hp Merc outboards. But it’s also perfect for long weekends aboard, with two separate cabins and a surprisingly spacious head.

Cruisers Yachts 50 GLS running

Start at the stern, where the Mercs hang from a wide transom that allows ample room to use the outdoor kitchen, featuring twin grills and a sink. Fold-down bulwarks stretch the usable floor space from the 14-foot-6-inch beam to 21 feet. The cockpit behind the windshield adds an L-shaped galley with twin fridges behind the helm, plus three L-shaped lounges and a settee aft with twin tables.

Stroll through the opening windshield and there is wraparound seating with three dedicated forward-facing seats with armrests for security. (Don’t forget the 1,800 hp on the transom.)

Cruisers Yachts 50 GLS helm

The skipper gets a dedicated adjustable seat with a headrest, and the companion seat handles two guests to keep an eye on the glass dash with triple 19-inch Simrad screens and advanced CZone digital switching. A bow thruster adds to the maneuverability. Most of the cockpit is covered by the fiberglass hardtop (with sunroof), while an awning extends to protect the remaining deck.

Cruisers Yachts 50 GLS cockpit

Below, a private master cabin has a queen-size berth forward, while the aft cabin has flexible single or double berths. Both cabins share a spacious head with a separate stall shower, and the salon has a fridge and TV.

The flagship of the Cruisers GLS line of seven boats (four with outboards), the 50 clearly calls to experienced boaters with the fold-down terraces aft, triple outboards that provide speed (56 mph), and a deep forward cockpit that’s safe for kids. Add to that the overnighting and long-weekending ability from the two cabins, full air conditioning with a generator, and thoughtful amenities, from cellphone chargers to a microwave for morning coffee.

Cruisers Yachts 50 GLS cabin

Cruisers’ construction, from the sturdy stringer grid to the flawless joinerwork, has long been a hallmark of this company, and the 50 GLS with its modern details just adds to that luster.

excess 14 catamaran sailboat

The Excess 14 is the pure incarnation of the Excess DNA. It is the result of a dedicated design work and an industrial execution, unique to the brand. It is a cruising yacht that is both fun and playful, with sleek lines. This catamaran is the outcome of innovative architecture, of unbiased research work seeking “out-of-the-box” solutions.

The Excess 14 is designed around a layout never seen before on the market, both in the owner’s version and in the charter version. More sensations yet everything you’d expect from a cruising boat: this is the challenge taken up by the Excess 14.

Beneteau Gran Turismo 45

Beneteau Gran Turismo 45

The Gran Turismo 45  seamlessly facilitates an indoor-outdoor experience. Large windows, a big sundeck, and a U-shaped cockpit offer uninterrupted access to the elements, yet an electric sunroof provides protection when needed.

Because it’s a new boat, you can add the option for a glass panel or electric hinge-up window that closes off the rear of the cockpit, depending on your style. The Beneteau Gran Turismo 45  is a unique blend of high-level comfort and sporty dynamics that’s perfect for smooth boating.

SŌLACE 415CS

Additionally, the inboard configuration allows for more versatility with space for unobstructed leisure activities such as swimming, fishing, or lounging, as well as space for a dinghy. While the 415CS is a great option for a new boat, many yacht owners also like it as a tender, as it is far more efficient than other boats. Running on diesel, there is a single fuel source since the yacht already runs on diesel, so there is no need to carry gasoline on board.

Known to incorporate some of the most family and fishing features into one center console boat compared to the rest of the industry, SŌLACE has a team of craftsmen that truly know every aspect of boatbuilding.

To achieve such a feat, twin V12 MAN diesel engines are paired with a state-of-the-art hull design. The ride is fast but also smooth, comfortable, and sporty. The World of Motor Yachts: Luxury, Performance, and Freedom

Motor yachts offer a unique combination of power, comfort, and freedom on the water. Designed primarily for pleasure cruising or racing, these impressive vessels put the world at your fingertips.

A Spectrum of Sizes: Finding Your Perfect Motor Yacht

Motor yachts come in different sizes, catering to every desire. From compact and maneuverable models around 33 feet (10 meters) to sprawling luxury palaces exceeding 131 feet (40 meters), there’s a perfect fit for every dream.

Pricing Considerations:

  • Smaller motor yachts (33ft – 50ft) typically range from $500,000 to $3 million.
  • Mid-size yachts (50ft – 80ft) can fall between $3 million and $15 million.
  • Superyachts (over 80ft) enter a whole new pricing category, reaching into the hundreds of millions and beyond, depending on size, customization, and features.

Power and Maneuverability: Taking Control on the Water

Motor yachts usually have two or more motors. This has several advantages:

  • Better Maneuverability: Two engines allow captains to better deal with challenging weather conditions. Thanks to vessel control software systems, it also provides some advantages when docking.
  • Fuel Efficiency and Range: With dual engines and customized fuel tanks, extended cruises at constant speeds with lower fuel consumption are possible. This is where the explorer yacht, designed to roam, even cross the Atlantic, thrives.
  • Shallow Water Access: Unlike deep-keel sailboats, motor yachts have a shallower draft, allowing them to explore beautiful coves and hidden bays inaccessible to other vessels.

The Flybridge Advantage: Elevated Yachting Experience

Many motor yachts, particularly larger models, will also have a flybridge. This offers captains better visibility for navigation, docking, and it provides passengers with higher vistas. Flybridge boats, like the smaller Merry Fisher , have that additional social space, featuring seating areas, wet bars, and sundecks.

Beyond Ownership: Exploring the Charter Option

Chartering offers a fantastic alternative for those seeking a taste of the motor yacht lifestyle without the full commitment of ownership. Chartering allows owners to offset some of the cost of their boats.

In 2020, an estimated 15,000 yachts were exceeding 79 feet available for charter worldwide.

Charter yachts often involve annual maintenance costs of around 15% of the yacht’s value. For vessels valued over $3 million, that’s almost a half million a year!

Our boating editors recently checked out the Miami boat show to understand this decadent market. We found many owners who don’t even get to use their yachts as much as they’d like, so the chartering world makes sense for everyone.

Entering the Realm of Superyachts: Luxury Redefined

The “Commercial Yacht Code” categorizes motor yachts exceeding 79 feet (24 meters) as superyachts and those surpassing 131 feet (40 meters) as mega-yachts. These behemoths represent the pinnacle of luxury yachting, with meticulously crafted interiors, advanced technological marvels, and crew quarters to cater to the owner’s every need. Naturally, these vessels come with exceptionally high construction standards and price tags.

Buying a Motor Yacht

Once you have made a decision to purchase a motor yacht, the next step is to determine exactly what make of motor yacht will best fit your requirements. There are so many different motor yachts, give yourself time to find the right one and ask yourself this.

  • Budget capacity?
  • New or used?
  • What type of user experience do you want out of the vessel?
  • What hull size of motor yacht is best?

Once you have created a shortlist, you can then refine your search. Take time out to go and view in person. Book yourself an experience aboard and head over to your closest marina and speak to owners. Consider these points before purchasing a motor yacht.

  • Pre-book buyer’s sea trials for your shortlist
  • Select the perfect motor yacht
  • Used – get a certified hull survey, safety comes first
  • Get annual insurance quotes
  • Calculate dockage – purchase or rent a slip or dock
  • Calculate monthly upkeep and maintenance
  • Calculate extra costs like navigational devices & fittings
  • Draft your own checklist
  • Draft & sign off sale & purchase contracts
  • Draft & sign off a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA)
  • Ensure satisfied 100%
  • Execute payment and take transfer of ownership
  • Register and insure the motor yacht

Frequently Asked Questions About Motor Yachts

These 5 questions give you some clarity on what to consider when purchasing a motor yacht.

  • How many guests and crew (combined) are you comfortable with aboard? Privately registered motor yachts can carry no more than 12 passengers, so often this will define the length of the vessel.
  • Then consider functionality and lifestyle. Decide upfront what you want out of the motor yacht, are you planning to use it for charter, private cruising, sport, remote office, family vacations or entertainment or all of the above?
  • Do you plan to use it on inland water systems or oceans or both?
  • Do you want to captain and skipper yourself or would you prefer a crew, so you have time to enjoy the experience?  Set a limit to your budget both in terms of purchase and then beyond that one has to consider the long term upkeep, storage, and monthly maintenance costs
  • What is the best length for a Motor Yacht?

If you plan on becoming your own captain, the best hull size on average for a single-handed skipper would be between 32ft to 42ft.

The best motor yacht length is defined by both the objective and purpose of the vessel. Added to this one should consider both the budget and upkeep costs, including dockage fees, as these are most often calculated at a per foot rate. The next factor would be to select a good for the number of passengers you wish to have aboard (family, guests, crew), as the number of sleeping berths are limited on smaller hull sizes. As you increase your hull size, you need to consider that this will then add an extra headcount because you have to factor in additional space for crew.

They say the old golden unwritten nautical rule is that boat length is always defined by a person’s age. Whatever your age, double it, and that gives you a perfect hull length in feet (for example, if you are 40 years of age you should consider an 80ft hull length).

They can cost anywhere between $100,000- $10,000,000. The sky’s the absolute limit when it comes to what you can spend on a motor yacht. Used or new, the cost is often defined by the design, size and year of manufacture. Quality motor yachts are built to last and most often retain market related value if they are properly maintained and have an accident free history.

Motor yachts are generally between 33ft – 79 feet, super yachts are generally over 79 feet in hull length, and mega yachts are over 100 feet.

If you purchase a globally recognized brand, it makes selling the boat in the future much easier. The established global motor yacht brands offer a range of existing designs that can be customized to suit any individual requirement. These approved motor yacht designs are often updated with the latest technology and modifications over the years. A tip is that reputable international brands retain market value over the years so are considered a valuable investment.

There is never one best hull type for a motor yacht, there is rather a series or collection of yachts or vessels that are released and they often use the exact same hull design for different lengths in a series. There is a huge selection and variation of hull designs, and this is exactly what defines a yacht. Motor boat hulls are specifically designed to cut through water with the least possible resistance while remaining balanced in all types of weather and water conditions. Each year hull designs improve and often a new hull release is about using the latest carbon fiber molding techniques for structural strength, rather than a modification to the actual shape of the design.

Super yachts are power driven water vessels specially designed by yacht engineers and shipbuilders and are normally 71 – 99 feet in length. Super yachts that exceed 100ft in length are classified as mega yachts.

What Is The Best Flybridge Cruiser?

By Robert Bowman | Posted On Aug 27, 2024

There's no question that the popularity of boating has grown substantially over the last 5 years and fueling that growth has been the luxury flybridge market. According to Grand View Research , the yacht market size will increase at an annual growth rate of 5.1% between now and 2030. When looking at boats over 40-feet, flybridge yachts are a popular segment of the powerboat market that has been a dominant factor in that growth in ownership.

Major shipyards like Azimut , Sanlorenzo , and Feadship have all reported strong orders and current build projects. In 2023, those shipyards were number one, two, and three respectively in total length of new build yachts.

"The majority of the buyers we work with that are in the market for a cruising yacht also want a flybridge," says Captain Jeff Palmer , President of United Yacht Sales. "Especially if you plan on cruising in South Florida or over to the Bahamas, having a flybridge offers some many advantages, including great views and visibility from the higher position."

Many buyers ask, what is the best flybridge cruiser? With so many manufacturers building models that include a flybridge, and with varying levels of price and quality for different buyer types in the market, it becomes very difficult to say one yacht is better than any other.

The best flybridge cruiser, according to total number of sales in the last 12 months, is the Sea Ray 400 Sedan Bridge which ended production of the model in 2003. The entire 40-to-50 foot segment for Sea Ray, which includes a 450 Express Bridge and a 480 Sedan Bridge, leads the brokerage market entirely in terms of number of sales in the U.S. These particular Sea Rays tend to be more affordable than some of the other luxury flybridge models available today.

(Below: An example of what the Sea Ray 400 Sedan Bridge looked like.)

example of sea ray 400 flybridge cruiser

While Sea Ray did produce a massive quantity of boats between 1995 and 2005, it can be argued that the "best" flybridge cruiser could also go to other popular models including:

  • Azimut Yachts 50 FLY
  • Carver cockpit motor yacht
  • Meridian 441 Sedan Bridge & 490 Pilothouse
  • Prestige Yachts 500 Fly or 590 Fly

If you are researching what the best flybridge cruising yacht is for your boating plans, please don't hesitate to contact us at (772) 463-3131 or by email at [email protected] . One of our professional yacht brokers who specializes in flybridge yachts in your market will contact you to discuss your budget, plans, and requirements for your next boat.

The boat is an impressive 53 feet 4 inches LOA, has a 14-and-a-half-foot beam and is 50 feet from bow to transom.

Formula Boats introduced the 500 Super Sport Crossover in February 2021 along with its revolutionary quad Mercury 7.6L V12 600 HP Verado Outboard engines with two-speed transmission and a steerable gearcase.

Formula designed the new Mercury 600 horsepower engines to be close together so you can have an ample amount of space on the extended swim platform to socialize and access the engines when you need to. You’ll have four and a half feet of space between the transom and the end of the platform, which is a considerable amount of space for a Formula swim platform.

Storage Solutions and Cockpit on the 500 Super Sport Crossover

The aft deck has seating on both sides with one section wrapping around a pedestal table. The table has drink holders and a pop-up LED light under a removable insert to welcome you and your guests. The seating on the opposite side has two sections for underneath storage that can also act as a cooler. One of the seatbacks folds down as a platform for you and your guests to step on as you enter the boat.

Behind the starboard seat section is an electric grill that is stored under a flip-up splash guard and lid. The lid of the electric grill can transform into a serving area for all of the delicious meals you cook up for you and your guests. Next to the grill is another pop-up LED light.

The overhead extension has speakers and LED lights that shine in various colors to set the mood for onboard gatherings. The extension also includes an automatic shade to relax out of the sun.

In front of the starboard seating section are two barstools and a bartop for the ultimate onboard experience. The bartop has a partition that can make the back of the cockpit seating area its own room. When you open the partition, you’ll see into the galley.

The galley is the perfect place for all of your onboard meal and beverage needs. This area has:

  • A single basin sink with a lid
  • A cutting board
  • A cooktop with cover
  • A microwave oven
  • A refrigerator
  • A trash receptacle
  • Plenty of counter space and storage for all of your groceries, flatware and more

The salon is across from the galley with more countertops, a pull-out bar that can be replaced with a wine cooler, L-shaped seating on an elevated platform, an ice maker and an expandable table with drink holders. You can add additional seating to the table by accessing the cushions under the elevated platform, pulling out the support from the table and securing the cushion.

The overhead has four skylights — two of them open and the others have shades to dim the galley and salon space. You and your guests can enjoy the 65-inch TV from the salon that includes a soundbar above.

Bow Cockpit for the Formula 500 Super Sport Crossover

You can enter the bow of this Formula boat through the port side of the windshield. You’ll find wrap-around seating in the bow area with flip-down armrests that include drink holders, storage under three seats, a trash receptacle under one of the seats and pop-up LED lights in the front of the bow.

In the center of the seating is an electric table that lifts with the press of a button. Lift one at a time or both to create an excellent entertaining space for your guests. Place covers on the table to cover the deck floor surface. You can also put cushions on top and lower the tables to align with the seats, creating a spacious seating area to lay down and relax on the bow of the Formula 500 Super Sport Crossover.

Swim Platform and More

Seating at the stern of the Formula 500 Super Sport Crossover is perfect for a day of enjoying the views of the water and relaxing. The beautiful lounger allows you to look out at the bay, cove or open water you’re anchored in.

This seating has flip seatbacks that settle in three different positions to lay back in the sun and storage underneath the seating for the optional SEABOB, which can be connected to a charging unit that is placed under the seat ahead. The stern lounge seating also includes stainless steel drink holders and a spot to lay your cellphone on either side of the seating.

The swim platform also has a padded leaning post with six drink holders and sockets in the deck below to secure paddleboards and other water equipment. You’ll also find a reboarding ladder on either side of the swim platform that secures in the deck and a rail that secures on both sides to offer a semi-enclosed area on the swim platform.

The cabin below the deck has a considerable amount of space for enjoying time with guests, storing items and getting a great night’s rest. You’ll find a kitchenette that has a sink, glassware storage and other cabinets for securing groceries and other items. The seating area that surrounds a table is great for dining and turns into a comfortable bed for you or your guests to enjoy. A TV and soundbar sit across from the seating area with LED backlights to create a welcoming atmosphere.

The mid-cabin offers an incredibly comfortable space for you to unwind and spend the night on your Formula boat. Enjoy a seating area, queen-sized bed, TV with soundbar, electronic charging mount, outlet and storage for your personal items.

Lastly in the cabin is the head compartment. This area features a walk-in shower, plenty of storage space, vessel sink, large trash receptacle and an electric flush head.

Top 15 Trawlers for 2023

  • By Patrick Sciacca
  • October 13, 2023

For every shoe, there’s a foot, and for every boating enthusiast, there’s a yacht. For those individuals who like to cruise their yachts across blue water, spend months on board or voyage to remote beaches and quiet coves, a trawler yacht is the go-to vessel choice. But even within this yacht genre, there are many options. For example, there are some mighty midsize trawlers that are easily capable of transatlantic crossings for an adventurous couple, and then there are megayacht-size craft with next-level amenities that require extra crew. Some trawler-yacht builders offer significant customization and others work from a fixed options list. There are single-engine trawlers and twin-engine trawlers. One thing that is common is that these trawler yachts are designed from the ground up for yachtsmen with wanderlust in their hearts.

Top Trawlers

The following 15 trawlers are all vessels we’ve written about. They are listed in no particular order.

  • Nordhavn 96 : Built for an owner who desired to self-sufficiently while cruising the world, literally.
  • Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 : This trawler can travel nonstop for 1,000 nautical miles.
  • Kadey-Krogen 52 : This twin-engine-capable, all-oceans trawler is a solid fit for voyaging cruising couples.
  • Bering Yachts B76 : The B76 is the builder’s first fully custom trawler in this size range.
  • Ranger Tugs R-43 Command Bridge : This vessel is equally comfortable at a 7-knot stroll or an 18-knot jog.
  • Beneteau 48 Swift Trawler : Based on the builder’s Swift Trawler 47, this yacht has a resin-infused fiberglass hull.
  • Kadey-Krogen 50 Open : The 50 Open can cruise at 6 knots nonstop for 5,000 nautical miles.
  • Outer Reef 620 Trident : It has a three-stateroom layout and optional 600 hp Cummins diesels.
  • Grand Banks 60 Skylounge : This yacht is efficient across a variety of cruising speeds.
  • Krogen Express 52 : Headroom to spare, two staterooms, a chef-ready galley and long range define this trawler yacht.
  • Grand Banks 85 Skylounge : Grand Banks’ V-warp hull form makes for a level running attitude, seakindliness and long range.
  • Vicem Yachts 82 Classic : Construction is in cold-molded, strip-planked mahogany with epoxy.
  • Outer Reef 610 Motoryacht : Power on this Outer Reef is a pair of 500 hp John Deere 6090 diesels.
  • Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot : Did someone say this is a 20-knot Nordhavn?
  • Marlow 58E : A high level of customization and admirable performance are at the heart of the Marlow 58E.

Nordhavn 96

The Nordhavn 96 is the yacht builder’s second-largest yacht its 17-model fleet, which ranges from 41 to 120 feet length overall. (There is a new 112 on the drawing table.) The builder says the N96 is based on its earlier 86-footer with a 10-foot cockpit extension, which increases both main-deck, skylounge and below-deck volume. The N96 we reviewed was built by an owner who previously had an 86-foot Nordhavn, but with his plans for extended cruises to remote destinations, the 96 was the right size for his voyaging plans. In fact, since the owner took delivery of the boat, it has been on a continuous circumnavigation.

Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The Grand Trawler 62 is the builder’s flagship in its Trawler series, which also includes the Swift Trawler 35 , Swift Trawler 41 Sedan ,  Swift Trawler 41 Fly and Swift Trawler 48 . Small touches set the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 apart. They include sea rails on all lockers to keep stowed food and gear in place, leather-wrapped interior handrails for security in a seaway, and leather drawer pulls like those found on larger yachts. Long-range cruising accommodations include a full-beam master stateroom aft, a forepeak VIP and twin-berth guest stateroom. Kadey-Krogen 52

The Kadey-Krogen 52 is the trawler-yacht builder’s smallest offering in its raised-pilothouse series, complete with a Portuguese Bridge. Owners can choose from either a two- or three-stateroom layout, and between a single-diesel engine or twin-diesel engines, for owners seeking redundancy. The standard engine is a 231 hp John Deere diesel. With the single-engine setup, draft is 5’5” and with twins it’s a shallower 4’6”. At 6 knots, range is an ocean-crossing 4,850 nautical miles. At 7 knots, it’s 3,300 nm. At 9 knots, it 1,700 nm. The builder states, “The entire Krogen 52 is built from only three molded pieces for maximized structural integrity. There are no additional secondary bonds or caulk joints that can inevitably cause issues. All deck and superstructures are cored and vacuum-bagged to maximize strength while minimizing weight.” Additionally, six longitudinal stringers enhance overall strength.

Lemanja  is the first custom boat that Bering has built in this size range. The yacht is notable for its steel hull and aluminum superstructure, and for its 4,000-nautical-mile-plus range with its twin 404 hp Cummins QSL9 diesel engines. As rugged as the Bering 76 is built on the outside, it also offers homelike comforts in its skylounge inside, offering panoramic views out large windows surrounding the space. Sole-to-ceiling glass offers similar views in the open-plan salon. Accommodations are fox six guests in three staterooms with a master stateroom and two guest staterooms, plus crew accommodations. In addition to its traditional diesel engines, the B76 has a solar-rechargeable battery bank for hybrid propulsion.

Ranger Tugs R-43 Command Bridge

The Ranger Tugs R-43 Command Bridge is a long-distance cruiser with creature comforts. Our expert found the R-43 Command Bridge to be a solid candidate to cruise The Great Loop . We agree. Twin Volvo Penta IPS450 pod drives give the boat efficient low and high cruise speeds at 7 and 18 knots, respectively. For those that have work during their cruise, the R-43 Command bridge’s master stateroom is set up with an office with a desk. Long trips require extra stowage and a way to clean salty clothes, so on the R-43 Command Bridge there is a washer, dryer, auxiliary refrigerator/freezer and stowage under the dinette, which rises on electric rams. Voyagers who buy a R-43 Commander Bridge can opt for a Factory Delivery Experience, which is three days of instruction on Puget Sound, and includes in boat systems, handling and maintenance.

Beneteau Swift Trawler 48

The Beneteau Swift Trawler 48 has a 1,300-nautical-mile range at 8 knots, but can also speed away at 26 knots if the weather goes south in a hurry. Based on the builder’s 47-footer , the three-stateroom, two-head Swift Trawler 48 has a resin-infused fiberglass hull. Power is a pair of 425 hp Cummins diesels. The main-deck layout includes a galley aft setup, which is accessible to the cockpit. There, the seating and dining area can be fully enclosed, with tracks in place for side curtains. The helmsman is kept comfortable on long passages with a bolstered, pedestal bucket-style seat with a flip-up footrest. The Swift Trawler 48 we reviewed had upgraded 12-inch Raymarine HybridTouch displays (9-inch screens are standard).

Kadey-Krogen 50 Open

Designed for serious extended cruising,  Kadey-Krogen Yachts 50 Open provides owners with amenities that will enhance those longer passages. The galley is fitted with a Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer, a four-burner Wolf range, a microwave and an optional dishwasher. Unlike in many trawlers and their traditional pilothouse design, the galley is located on the same level as the helm and salon. Belowdecks is the master stateroom amidships with two hanging lockers, 12 cabinets, additional drawers for stowage and an en suite head, shower and two sinks. Forward of the master is an office. The 50 Open’s hull has soft chines and a curved after end, much like the characteristics of a sailboat built for cruising. The result is an efficient hull form that provides a gentle landing into troughs when the sea gets a temper. This trawler can cruise at 6 knots for 5,000 nautical miles; 7 knots for 3,000 nautical miles; 8 knots for 2,100 nautical miles; and 9 knots for 1,200 nautical miles.

Outer Reef 620 Trident

Outer Reef Yachts 620 Trident delivers a three-stateroom layout and optional 600 hp Cummins diesels that allow this vessel to approach a top hop of 21 knots. Cruising speed is a little over 16 knots, burning about 34 gallons of fuel per hour at 2,750 rpm. The amidships master stateroom has 6-foot-8-inch headroom, a walk-in closet and a shower enclosed in smoked glass. In the forepeak VIP stateroom, there are seven drawers, a hanging locker, a 31-inch Samsung TV and 7-foot headroom. The portside guest stateroom can convert to an office, too. The aft galley has a U-shape countertop, a three-burner electric cooktop, a Bosch microwave and a Vitrifrigo refrigerator and freezer. Cherry, walnut and oak are the available wood options.

Grand Banks 60 Skylounge

It’s obvious after a quick peek inside the Grand Banks 60 Skylounge that the  Grand Banks Yachts  trademark external DNA is retained. The deck, cabin house and skylounge are all composed of infused carbon fiber, reducing weight aloft and creating a lower center of gravity. With twin 900 hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels , the 60 Skylounge can accelerate to 31 knots and cruise at about 25 knots. The 60 Skylounge can also travel up to 2,000 nautical miles at 10 knots on a 1,530-gallon fuel tank. Twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS1200s are also available.

Krogen Express 52

The Krogen Express 52 runs on twin 440 hp Yanmar diesels and can cruise at 8 knots for 1,680 nautical miles or at 16 knots for 500 nautical miles. Top hop:  22 knots. In the interior,  Krogen Express  has outfitted the 52 with a master stateroom and a guest stateroom. The former has a queen island berth, more than 7-foot headroom, hanging lockers and smaller cubbies to port and to starboard, and an en suite head with a molded fiberglass shower stall with a seat, a VacuFlush toilet and a granite countertop. A power lift elevates the berth and grants access to more stowage underneath. The Krogen Express 52’s salon has a 26-inch HD LED TV and a home-theater system, leather Stressless chairs to port and a built-in, L-shape settee to starboard. The galley boasts granite countertops, a three-burner Force 10 propane range with an oven, a refrigerator, a GE microwave oven, a deep Elkay sink and a pullout sprayer faucet. There is a Buff Ultraleather Stidd helm seat for extra comfort during long runs.

Grand Banks 85 Skylounge

The Grand Banks 85 Skylounge comes in at more than 87 feet length overall and displaces 108,000 pounds, with a 22-plus-foot beam and an air draft of just under 26 feet. Owners can choose either a three- or four-stateroom layout. The standard motors are twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS diesels, twin 1,300 hp MAN straight-shaft diesels are optional. With the larger engines, owners can also choose an optional stern thruster, in addition to the standard bow thruster. With the IPS diesels, top speed is 26.5 knots and fuel burn is 100 gallons per hour, resulting in a range of 699 nautical miles. At a 21-knot cruise speed, fuel consumption drops to 57 gph, and range climbs to 972 nm. At a 9-knot jog, fuel burn falls to 9 gph, and the Grand Banks 85 Skylounge can cruise nonstop for about 2,500 nautical miles.

Outer Reef 610 Motoryacht

Built for an enthusiastic cruising couple after a three-year boat search, the Outer Reef Yachts 610 Motoryacht (part of the builder’s Classic series ), was customized with a fore-and-aft berth in the owners’ stateroom (as in, not athwartships), and berths rather than bunks in the smaller of two guest staterooms. This Outer Reef 610 was designed to be used as a liveaboard vessel, so the salon is not set up for dining (there are tables in the pilothouse, on the aft deck and on the bridge). A pair of swivel chairs in the salon face the built-in couch and the pop-up TV to port. The 610 is built with hand-laid fiberglass, PVC coring above the waterline, resin infusion and a vinylester barrier coat against osmosis. Power is twin 500 hp John Deere 6090 diesels turning ZF transmissions . The 610 tops out at about 13.5 knots with full tanks and 21 people aboard. The engines burn 20 gph at 1,800 rpm for 11 knots at 45 percent engine load. Those numbers should allow it to cross oceans without shortening engine life.

Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot

Nordhavn has long been known for its stout circumnavigation -capable craft, and the Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot carries on the the tradition of a beefy build with addition of…speed. Twenty-knots-plus, actually. Twin 715 hp Cummins diesel inboards and a new semidisplacement hull form  are said to be key to the performance equation. The Nordhavn 59CP has a 777-nautical-mile range at a 9.3-knot cruise, and a 255-nm range at its 20.3-knot top-end. Construction is a solid fiberglass hull bottom supported by full-length longitudinal stringers and a series of transversal supports for added backbone. High freeboard should keep the decks dry in a seaway, while rails keep the crew secure during transits. Nordhavn says the 59CP has a “CE category A unlimited offshore rating, ensuring the vessel has the seakeeping and strength capabilities to take on most serious coastal cruises up to 1,000 miles.”

Marlow Yachts 58E

Following on the successful Marlow 57 , the Marlow 58E was started from scratch on a blank sheet of paper. The essence of the 58E is that it has better performance and more internal and external volume than her predecessor. The centerline length grew 10 inches over the 57, but the waterline length increased 16 inches and the beam widened 4 inches. If you were to examine the two boats out of the water, you would see more bell-shaped forward sections making for a soft impact with the vee’d portion. Power options start with twin 575 hp Caterpillar C9 diesels, but the 58E we got aboard had beefier twin 1,015 hp Caterpillar C18 diesels. Top speed: 27.9 knots. At 8 knots, the Marlow 58E can cruise nonstop for 1,400 nautical miles.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a trawler yacht?

A true trawler typically has a full-displacement hull form and robust construction to handle open-water operation, and it’s designed to operate self-sufficiently for long periods of time. They are slow-cruising vessels, but over the years, hybrid yachts called fast trawlers have emerged to offer displacement-speed operation as well as the ability to run at planing speeds when desired.

What is a full-displacement hull form?

A displacement-hull form is known is for its rounded nature and deep draft. Full-displacement vessels do not plane on the water, but rather push through the water. This hull design makes displacement-hull vessels incredibly seakindly, but it also makes them relatively slow (think 5, 6, 7, 8 knots) when compared to semidisplacement- and planning-hull designs.

Is a long-range cruiser the same as a trawler?

While all trawlers are certainly long-range cruisers, not all long-range cruisers are trawlers. True trawlers will have full-displacement hull designs and not all long-range cruisers have them.

2024 Boat of the Year: Best Cruising Catamaran Over 50 Feet

  • By Herb McCormick
  • December 15, 2023

Fountaine Pajot Aura 51

It was perhaps fitting that Fountaine-Pajot and Lagoon Catamarans—two longtime pillars in the production catamaran community—came head-to-head for the title of best cruising cat over 50 feet for 2024. Talk about symmetry: Both boats measure in at about 51 feet. A nearly exact price point of just around $1.6 million. Each is produced by one of the pioneering French multihull builders that’s been at the game for decades. In some ways, this matchup was not unlike a heavyweight boxing bout between Ali and Frazier, or a good old-fashioned feud like the Hatfields and McCoys. It was a duel that the judges relished and dreaded because the competition would undoubtedly be close—but there could be only one champ.

Winner: Fountaine-Pajot Aura 51

During deliberations, judge Mark Pillsbury summarized the overall layout of the Aura 51, a viewpoint shared by his fellow panelists: “A length overall of 51 feet is enough space to give designers options when it comes to how a cruising cat is laid out, and Fountaine-Pajot takes advantage of this by offering a variety of layouts, with up to six cabins in charter mode. The boat we sailed in Annapolis had what they term a ‘double Maestro layout,’ i.e., a master cabin aft in each hull, with guest quarters forward. It would be a boat that two owners might share, sailing separately or together occasionally. I really liked their decision to locate the helm station on the Aura partway between the cockpit and the flybridge, which they called the sky lounge. That way, the skipper stays in contact with guests below and above, and has good visibility astern when docking. I also like the separation between the steering seat and the three winches on the cabin top. Shorthanded, the autopilot can be engaged when the skipper steps forward to trim sails, and with crew, the trimmer has room to work and the skipper room to steer. We had light wind the day we sailed, only about 5 to 8 knots, and the Aura made 4 knots closehauled—a good run for a big, well-stocked cruising cat.

Judge Herb McCormick weighed in: “I really thought that this category was a toss-up. Both boats will be sold to private owners and will also be set up for the charter trade. At the end of the day, what leaned me toward the Aura was that helmsman’s arrangement, centered between the cockpit and the top deck. I loved that big flybridge on the Lagoon, which will be a great space especially on charter, but this is the best ‘cruising’ cat, not best ‘charter’ cat, and that one feature I believe is better-suited to real cruising.”

Runner-up: Lagoon Catamarans 51

Lagoon 52 being tested during Boat of the Year

The French boatbuilding industry is to be applauded for its forward-thinking approach to sustainable building practices and exploring next-generation powering and propulsion systems. Judge Tim Murphy focused in on Lagoon’s approach: “This is largest Lagoon fully intended for owner-operators. Beginning with 55, the next size up in the range, a professional captain is expected to be involved. Lagoon produces 275 boats per year. From this year’s Boat of the Year fleet, Lagoon is at the forefront of carbon-positive materials: 35 percent biomaterial in the polyester resin (compared with 14 percent last year), with hemp fibers employed instead of glass in some of the smaller molded parts. The production plant is certified ISO 9001, 40001, 50001, which is notable for the commitment to sustainable manufacturing.”

Unlike McCormick, judge Mark Pillsbury liked the Lagoon’s helm station just fine. He said: “The 51 is a big boat, but the layout of the helm station on the flybridge makes the boat simple to operate with a shorthanded crew. All sail controls are led to three winches on the cabin top, and there is a Harken electric sidewinder winch adjacent to the wheel to control the traveler. And for a large cruising cat, I thought that the 51 sailed well. The steering was very smooth. In 8 to 12 knots of breeze, we saw boatspeeds in the high 6s and 7s depending on our point of sail. The view from the helm was tremendous.”

Best performance yachts: Our pick of the top options

  • Toby Hodges
  • March 10, 2023

Toby Hodges takes a look at all the nominees and the winner of the performance yachts 2022 category in the European Yacht of the Year Awards

The European Yacht of the Year awards is the most thorough and impartial awards programme – the winners here are widely considered the best yachts of the year . As such the boats nominated by the jury in the performance yachts category can be considered the best of the best.

This year’s shortlist had the full range. From the more conventional definitive style of performance cruiser to the contemporary French interpretation of a lightweight planing cruiser – and even a new brand of sports  catamarans  for the thrill seekers.

Three Italian pure performance yachts and two very different yachts built in Slovenia made for a varied and exciting Performance Yachts category.

Best performance yachts

Winner best performance yachts 2023 – beneteau first 36.

Where once we could assume a cruiser-racer was a fairly standard format design, over the last decade it’s been much more the sexy, perormance yachts the Italian yards specialise in. But as French yards like Pogo and JPK have proven, there’s growing enthusiasm for lightweight planing yachts – and the First 36 is the first real production yacht in that spirit.

Here’s a yacht that puts the focus firmly back into sailing. The First 36 has been kept inviting and approachable – unlike many yachts that can plane, the look is modest, not aggressive. It’s uncomplicated, unfussy and the result is a pleasure for all to sail. It’s more about what you can’t see, the design and engineering, which should ensure longterm demand.

The small, fiddly heads compartment and lack of tiller options are perhaps the only real detraction from an otherwise brilliant collaboration by Seascape and Beneteau, from concept to build quality.

It was their goal to keep this area of the market relevant and prove a mainstream brand can do it, rather than only niche specialist yards. To create a mass produced yacht at this weight and to this foam-cored quality and one that can bring so much fun is a feather in the cap of the First brand.

Grand Soleil 40

The Grand Soleil 40 is an archetypal Med cruiser-racer, and an absolute delight to sail – a feature I’ve learned that Matteo Polli designs tend to share (he also drew the Ecoracer). We sailed the race set up with ORC keel (an IRC version is available too) and six winches, an extended bowsprit and a taller mast. It was one of my most memorable trials of the season in 10-12 knots, with the deep and forward positioned rudder giving plenty of control and lovely direct steering.

The three cabin interior can have one or two heads and different galley options, the cabins are a good size with modest stowage, and it’s all tastefully styled by masters Nauta.

Italia yachts 12.98

At 5ft longer and from the board of Cossutti (who Polli once worked under), the Italia Yachts 12.98 is another cruiser-racer in the same grain as the GS40, but with a markedly different looking white interior. We sailed the ‘Bellissima’ cruising version, which 80% of customers have opted for.

Italia’s yard is now in Fano and its one-shot infused vinylester build looks impressive. However, the deck lacks some refinement and practical stowage, while the three cabin interior isn’t voluminous by today’s standards.

This is a slippery yacht that has a lovely, light feel on the single rudder – the interior styling will be the deal breaker for most.

Solaris Yachts on the other hand has perfected its recipe, tripling its yard size to cater to demand for its sexy Acebal-designed performance yachts.

The Solaris 50 we tested in 2015 and which won this award was arguably the turning point that propelled the brand’s popularity. The owner of the new 50 we tested previously had the original 50 and a 58 and confirms this replacement has nearly the same space as the 58, yet is faster, more powerful and stable than its predecessor (we easily matched 7-8 knot winds under gennaker).

It heels onto its chine and accelerates well, while twin rudders provide ample control. The design prioritises helming experience but the yard needs to come up with a better helm seat option. The interior is well executed, especially the spacious forward owner’s cabin.

The Elan E6 is a big 47-footer, high and beamy and one that leans more towards spirited cruising with generous accommodation over racing. That said, extensive options allow you to tailor it either way, including foam cored furniture and a taller carbon mast for those looking for extra oomph.

It’s a fine collaboration between Humphreys Yacht Design, Gurit, Pininfarina and Elan, while an impressive standard spec includes a carbon sprit and six winches.

The E6 is fun to sail at various angles and gives a nice, sporty feel on the helm – it likes to heel but has plenty of grip and tracks well.

The cockpit is deep and comfortable, with good optional protection and there’s ample deck stowage. A really smart three (or four) cabin interior shows a high standard of construction, finish and styling. It is bulky and you pay for the size in weight, but it looks good and Elan knows how to build a great boat for the price.

Best performance yachts 2022

Winner best performance yachts 2022 – jpk 39fc.

Along with fellow Brittany yard Pogo, JPK has redefined the modern performance cruiser: stiff, stable and efficient to the max. For the keen sailor who wants to get the utmost enjoyment out of hands-on cruising, the JPK 39 is a superb design (and to my eye, an appealing one too), while the yard has done a nice job with the vacuum-infused construction and interior fit-out. The two-cabin version we sailed had plenty of stowage too.

It looks different, behaves beautifully and stands up to its canvas, is designed to sail efficiently with a loaded displacement, and has a deck set-up to encourage you to trim it to your heart’s content. My only slight negative is the unnerving mess the cockpit can become as there are so many control lines.

This lightweight blast will best suit experienced sailors and those comfortable with short-handed sailing. And it guarantees smiles.

One such sports catamaran is the IC36, an exciting first offering from a new Czech brand that’s packed with fresh thinking. The first turbo version of this cruising catamaran (Independence) is built using a carbon fibre crossbeam, bowsprit, boards and rudders, epoxy hulls, plus a custom Pauger rotating mast, which all serve to keep weight below three tonnes.

It provided some spirited sailing, particularly when fetching at a measured pace of 10-13.5 knots with the code 0. The direct feel of tiller steering while seated in the low rotating bucket seats was a highlight.

The finish quality in the hulls is first class and there is somehow space for up to eight berths. The coachroof features a retractable bimini and removable vinyl side panels and solar panels, while the cockpit table, which includes an exterior galley, is also removable.

In fact the IC36 can be dismantled to 2.55m beam to make it legally trailable. It has so many options and ideas – too many perhaps – all reflected in the price.

Monohull enthusiasts will share our congratulations to J-Boats for its elegant new flagship. The J/45 won the hearts of the jury and made for a long drawn out decision against the JPK. In the end the two yachts will appeal to different sailors and tastes.

J has stayed true to its roots, yet still managed to bring a current, classy new offering. The unmistakable Alan Johnstone lines have been paired with a contemporary, warm European interior designed by Isabelle Racopeau, while much focus has been paid to the joinerwork and the invisible quality. We saw the two cabin version, which has an excellent technical cabin in place of the second aft cabin.

The J/45 is designed to still perform when loaded with cruising gear. True to J’s reputation, it was a witch upwind and could outpoint anything else during our trials. The compromise is that it won’t plane easily like a JPK or Pogo.

best 50 foot yacht 2023

The Solaris 40 is another looker from Soto Acebal and the blue steel metallic hull colour of the test boat made the powerful hull shape really stand out.

We liked the recessed traveller, direct steering to the twin rudders, neat folding helm seats, clutches integrated into the coamings and the easy access to the side decks. However, the jury found the cockpit with its short benches and deck design a little too flat and minimalist.

The interior is smart and contemporary, again offered with two or three cabins with two heads it makes good use of the space.

best 50 foot yacht 2023

One of the yachts I was looking forward to sailing most was the Pogo 44, and the only one shortlisted that I didn’t manage to! A collision with the photographer’s RIB shortly before my scheduled trial put it out of action.

However, my colleague Rupert Holmes did a full Pogo 44 test and report on it for Yachting World and describes the 44 as designed to thrill and unlike any other pure cruising yacht of its size. The stability from the beamy hull and deep lifting keel combines brilliantly with the ability to sail fast easily and in comfort. However some jury members didn’t like having to rely on an autopilot to use winches.

The interior is like a loft apartment, with so much natural light – it’s minimalist yet comfortable, spacious and practical for cruising.

MAJOR LEAP FOR EFFORTLES CRUISING - CARBON FURLING MAST

Hallberg-Rassy and Seldén are tweaking the concept of cruising by blending it with a great deal of performance. Carbon in-mast furling now takes PushButtonSailing to a completely new level. This set-up reduces the heeling and the weather helm to a minimum and improves up-wind performance. The lighter mast also makes for less pitching and pumping in choppy and big seas and the whole set-up will give a richer over-all sailing experience. Read more about it under  News

best 50 foot yacht 2023

LOTS OF VOLUME, COMFORT AND STORAGE

Traditionally we are used to comparing boats with hull length in feet. But much more relevant is the waterline length. The new 50 has a waterline that is as much as 50 cm / 1’ 8’’ longer than on the Hallberg-Rassy 55. Longer waterline gives better sailing performance with longer average day runs and at the same time more interior volume, comfort and storage under deck. The width is 33 cm larger at the widest point and an incredible 1.08 m wider than the 55 on the transom. That further enhances interior volume and storage.

best 50 foot yacht 2023

SOFT MOTION IN A SEAWAY

The modern and most efficient hull shape gives superior sailing performance. At the same time, the forward under water part of the hull is rounded, almost like an egg, and this means soft motion in a seaway at any angle of heel. The displacement of the hull is designed to carry all modern comfort equipment and lots of personal belongings, as well as generous tank capacity.

best 50 foot yacht 2023

BIG AND WELL PROTECTED COCKPIT

Typical Hallberg-Rassy, the cockpit is very well sheltered with high all-round coamings and a soft top or hard top windscreen with tempered glass, opening mid section and handholds at the sides. This is the ideal cockpit solution for both hot and cold areas. There is good all-round visibility. With twin wheels, there is both lots of space for displays and buttons and an easy passage from the helm position and forward. Furthermore, the wheel positions give better visibility forward, both when maneuvering in a harbour and to see the tell tails of the headsail. There is an optional big fixed high gloss varnished wooden table with drop leaves.

best 50 foot yacht 2023

MODERN AND EASY TO HANDLE SAIL PLAN

The rig is modern and easy to handle. It is even possible to fly an inner removable heavy weather sail with no runners. The foresail is only slightly overlapping, making tacking easy. There is also an option for a self tacking jib arrangement. Seldén electric furling for both in-mast and headsail, as well as electric sheet winches are fitted as standard. The main is designed to carry an Elvström FatFurl modern in-mast furling sail with Epex membrane, with roach, vertical battens and headboard. The top shrouds and lowers are to separate chain plates, a Hallberg-Rassy invention, which makes passage on deck easy, and arranges for easy sheeting of the headsail. The spreader base gets wide and stable in that way too. The deck plan is clean and uncluttered.

Quotes from the European Yacht of the Year jury, who elected the Hallberg-Rassy 50 winner in the prestigious Luxury Cruiser category Jochen Rieker, Yacht, Germany: Oh, what a joy! Slipping along in a dying breeze this first-class hotel by the sea type of yacht simply generated her own breeze. With her 25 meter tall carbon furling mast and a set of fine Epex sails including a fantastic furling Code Zero the Hallberg-Rassy 50 kept moving on the glassy Biscay off La Rochelle when others already stalled. While her heavy-weather talents were to be expected her agility in the light was one of several wow effects the Germán Frers design evoked in the not so easily impressed jury. Magnificent hull lines, great ergonomics, spacious cabins and the rock solid Swedish build quality all combine to something universally great. Whatever your program – the Hallberg-Rassy 50 will be a near perfect fit.
Quotes from the European Yacht of the Year jury, who elected the Hallberg-Rassy 50 winner in the prestigious Luxury Cruiser category Pasi Nuutinen, Vene, Finland: This new 50-footer is amongst the best ones even among Hallberg-Rassy's undeniably high legacy of cruiser yachts. Performance, reliability and dignity of both sailing and living are found in balance which is served with the excellent ergonomics of electrically powered deck hardware.
Quotes from the European Yacht of the Year jury, who elected the Hallberg-Rassy 50 winner in the prestigious Luxury Cruiser category Toby Hodges, Yachting World, Great Britain: A beautifully refined Hallberg-Rassy. The Swedish yard’s best model yet in its modern hullshape generation, it’s one that uses every inch of Germán Frers’ cunning design while still delivering highly impressive performance across the wind ranges.
Quotes from the European Yacht of the Year jury, who elected the Hallberg-Rassy 50 winner in the prestigious Luxury Cruiser category Roland Duller, YachtRevue Austria: No other shipyard has mastered the balancing act between contemporary, modern yacht building and the retention of traditional values better than Hallberg-Rassy. The HR 50 perfectly embodies this skill.
Quotes from the European Yacht of the Year jury, who elected the Hallberg-Rassy 50 winner in the prestigious Luxury Cruiser category Morten Brandt-Rasmussen, Bådmagasinet, Denmark: Hallberg-Rassy delivers with the 50 a boat that is full of the right choices. With the size of 50 foot there is enough space in the cockpit, on deck and down below to truly showcase the qualities of the Swedish yard. The owners cabin, the galley, the salon, the cockpit, the parts and components – everything just seems to be the right choice. The boat sails really well and the push button functionality, rig and sail design is close to flawless.
Quotes from the European Yacht of the Year jury, who elected the Hallberg-Rassy 50 winner in the prestigious Luxury Cruiser category Germán de Soler, Nautica y Yates, Spain: Whoever wants to get literally everything on a 50 foot cruiser this is the boat for everyone willing to pay the price. In the Hallberg-Rassy 50 luxury is not at odds with the main variable required in a sailboat: her capacity to sail well and fast. For everything else, you would have to do an extraordinary criticism exercise to find a single reproach.
Quotes from the European Yacht of the Year jury, who elected the Hallberg-Rassy 50 winner in the prestigious Luxury Cruiser category Loic Madeline Voiles & Voiliers, France: So much space in this hull designed by Germán Frers. Moreover Magnus Rassy wanted the interiors to be on one same level from the rear cabin to the front cabin, so you don’t even have to mind any step when moving along. Compared to what was done on previous models, mast was a bit shifted to the rear, so that the saloon can be even wider. Of course we liked the nice woodworks everywhere, but we also appreciate the very large chart station. On deck, you find two helm stations (just like on the Hallberg-Rassy 57). And the new 50 doesn’t need much wind to reach 7 or 8 knots.
Quotes from the European Yacht of the Year jury, who elected the Hallberg-Rassy 50 winner in the prestigious Luxury Cruiser category Axel Nissen-Lie, Seilmagasinet, Norway: Magnus Rassy got the most things right with his newcomer from Ellös, floating luxury that works in all weathers. It's just a shame that this kind of quality costs so much. I was lucky to sail the boat in sun, heat and light wind in France, but also during hard weather in the winter cold in Sweden. A good blue water cruiser should work in all conditions, and so does Hallberg-Rassy's new 50-footer. They have managed to create a modern boat without letting go of well-functioning solutions.
Quotes from the European Yacht of the Year jury, who elected the Hallberg-Rassy 50 winner in the prestigious Luxury Cruiser category Joakim Hermansson, Praktiskt Båtägande, Sweden: Year after year Hallberg-Rassy yachts are the absolutely most desired among German magazine YACHT’s readers, and when boarding the brand new Hallberg-Rassy 50 we really understand why. From the perfectly finished interior woodworks of select Nordic light oak together with all the comfort and storage needed for long-range cruises, to the very well utilized space in the roomy cockpit and the performance-enhancing outer lines of designer Germán Frers this brand new 50-footer is by far leaving not only her older 55-foot sister behind but also most of the competition.
Quotes from the European Yacht of the Year jury, who elected the Hallberg-Rassy 50 winner in the prestigious Luxury Cruiser category Lori Schüpbach, Marina.CH, Switzerland: The new Hallberg-Rassy 50 convinces with the usual Hallberg-Rassy advantages and at the same time surprises with various radical adjustments. The carbon furling mast with the black laminate sails is eye-catching. This upgrade is not entirely inexpensive, but it shows that Hallberg-Rassy goes one step further than the competition in terms of equipment and comfort. The volume below deck is also impressive - without compromising on looks the boat's width is exploited right to the stern.
Quote from Yachting World: The most pleasure and performance on the helm for a center cockpit yacht. Refined thoroughbred with single-level interior.

  • Unconventional Boats

The Great Loop stands as one of the premier long-term boating adventures in North America, and arguably, across the globe. Spanning over 6,000 miles, this journey offers boaters an experience akin to a cross-country RV road trip, but on water. It presents a unique opportunity to view the countryside through a different lens, as you navigate through a mix of seaways, canals, and rivers at a relaxed pace.

Let’s explore the ideal boats to embark on this remarkable journey.

Let’s get this out of the way – what’s the Great Loop in the first place?

The Great Loop is an adventure for recreational boaters that takes you on a giant circuit of the eastern half of the United States and Canada . It’s the joining of many smaller waterways, open water stretches, rivers, and canals to make an entire journey that’s about 6,000 nautical miles long.

Where you begin and end your Great Loop journey usually depends on where you buy or keep your vessel.

Here’s an overview using Norfolk, Virginia, as the starting point.

  • Norfolk northbound through Chesapeake Bay, through the C&D Canal, and seaward on Delaware Bay to Cape May, New Jersey.
  • Northbound along the Atlantic coast of New Jersey to New York harbor.
  • North on the Hudson River to upstate New York. From here, you have several choices depending on how one wants to transit the Great Lakes and how much of the Canadian Heritage Canals one would like to cruise.
  • Westbound through the Erie Canal.
  • West through the Great Lakes to Chicago.
  • South from Chicago through the inland rivers to the Gulf Coast.
  • Eastbound along the Gulf Coast to Florida, then southbound on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.
  • Either through the Okeechobee Waterway in south Florida or around the tip of the state, through the Florida Keys.
  • North from south Florida on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) back to Norfolk.

There are many choices to make the Great Loop your own adventure.

Loopers usually put between 5,000 and 7,000 miles under their keels while making the trip. However, it’s not a race, and there are plenty of opportunities to make side trips and adventures off the main route.

For example, the Downeast Loop is an extension that adds Maine, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edwards Island. The St. Lawrence Seaway will then take you west to the Great Lakes by way of Montreal. Another good example is extending your trip on the south end by adding an adventure in the Islands of The Bahamas.

For the most part, the Great Loop is a motorboat adventure . There are many open water spaces where you might sail, but it’s often constrained to a narrow navigable channel, making sailing much less appealing. In other words, even sailboats wind up motoring for most of the trip.

Furthermore, the trip transits canals and waterways with many bridge spans, both fixed and opening. The fewer bridges you have to have open for you, the easier your trip. Many fixed bridges mean you’ll have to take the mast off for long sections of the trip.

The trip spans many rural areas, interspersed with small towns and a handful of big cities. Many nights you’ll be anchored or docked in the middle of nowhere. Other times, you’ll have a new city to explore and check out.

Your boat should suit both styles. You will want the best family boat that is comfortable to live on, with sleeping, bathroom, and cooking facilities that you and your crew find comfortable. Yes, you can do the Loop in an open go-fast boat–but you will miss what many consider the best parts of the Loop.

Six Best Great Loop Boat Options By Type of Boat

There are too many makes and models of boats in the world for anyone to make a specific recommendation here. Instead, here is a list of six types of boats you’ll find doing the Loop and what makes them well suited for this particular adventure.

Remember, this is anything but an all-inclusive list. There are hundreds of boat makes out there, hundreds more that aren’t built anymore but can be bought used, and even more when you include custom and one-off designs. These lists are provided simply as a starting point for your research!

The classic trawler is basically the power version of a sailboat–slow-moving, heavy, and economical to operate. They have been around forever; tons were built in the 1970s and 1980s, many in Taiwan. That means that the design is time-tested–they are good-looking and seaworthy. Plus, you can readily find them on the used market for reasonable prices. Most have a maximum speed of about 10 knots.

The popular cruising blog Scho and Jo have set out and completed the Loop on their Albin trawler. Check out their Great Loop expenses for information on the adventure and how it’s done. For more about their boat, check out their boat tour.

Examples of Classic Trawlers:

  • Monk 36 (no longer built)
  • Grand Banks
  • Camino Troll (no longer built)
  • Nordhavn 40

The fast trawler is a classic one with a modern hull. Thanks to their improved hull design, they’re capable of faster speeds but use a lot of gas going fast. The best thing about them is probably the simple fact that they can do both comfortably–go slowly and economically or cruise faster (about 15 knots) while still giving a nice ride.

Examples of Fast Trawlers and Downeast Boats:

  • Beneteau Swift Trawlers

Best Boats For The Great Loop

What was once a unique niche in the boating world has caught on, and quite a few companies are now making tugboat-looking trawlers. They’re sportier than the traditional trawler and have an aesthetic that looks right at home on the rivers of the Great Loop.

Examples of Tugs Include:

  • Kadey Krogen
  • Lord Nelson Victory Tug (no longer made)

Tug boats for the Great Loop

A cruiser is built on a planing hull to go faster. That means more miles per day, fewer nights at anchor, and more fuel consumption while doing it.

There are many sizes and styles that are appropriate for the Loop, so the key is to find the layout that is most comfortable for you. The two most popular styles include express cruisers and aft-cabin cruisers.

Examples of cruisers and motor yachts include:

  • Sea Ray (many of the best models for the Loop are no longer made)
  • Cruiser Yachts
  • Bayliner Motoryachts (no longer built)
  • Hatteras Cruisers (no longer built)

Power catamarans are popular for the same reason that sail cats are. Thanks to their increased interior volume, two hulls make for a more comfortable living space. Your beam should be less than 23 feet, as the Trent Severn Waterway in Canada limits this. Still, that leaves several interesting power cats that would make fantastic Loop boats.

Examples of power cats that would be good when boating the Great Loop:

  • PDQ 34 Power Catamaran (no longer built)
  • Endeavour 440 TrawlerCat

Finally, it has to be mentioned that the best boat is always the boat you’ve got. Lin and Larry Pardey once famously said, “Go small, and go now.” If the Loop is on your bucket list, it’s better to find a boat you can get your hands on that will suit you well enough to travel and enjoy the ride. Don’t spend years saving up for a “maybe adventure.”

Examples of unconventional Looper boats:

  • Jet skis that camp along the way
  • Open runabouts, sport boats, and fishing boats
  • Sailboats–just take the mast off and motor like a trawler!
  • Trailerable boats that do it in sections–a trailerable boat lets you do a section and then tow the boat to the next section to cruise at your leisure

What Features Make Good Looper Boats?

So, how do you ever choose the right boat for the Loop? Here are some thoughts on what features make the best Looper boats.

The limits for your perfect Looper boat will be based on its physical dimensions. According to the Loop Cruiser’s Association, the average looper boat is 39.5 feet long, with more than half between 35 and 45 feet. But this doesn’t tell the whole story, as you must consider each vessel’s dimension.

Air Draft (Bridge Clearance or Height Above Water)

The most limiting fixture on the Loop is a fixed railroad bridge in Chicago that will block any vessel taller than 19 feet, 6 inches.

But, if you want to do the entire Erie Canal, two bridges offer only 15 feet, 6 inches. Another bridge in downtown Chicago is 17 feet. So, the Loop has lower limits, but most can be gone around by bigger boats.

Four feet or less of draft is ideal and will mean the fewest problems–although caution is still warranted in many areas. Draft is how deep the hull sits in the water and dictates the minimum water depth for a boat . Any deeper than that, and you will need to be extra cautious. Boats with six-foot drafts have reportedly done it, but few recommend it.

The width of your boat is usually limited to about 16 feet due only to marina slips.

Catamarans with 23 feet or less can make the trip but require T-heads at most marinas. As a result, finding slips on this trip will be difficult, and finding a place to haul out for boat maintenance is even harder. In addition, there are sections where you’ll need to take a slip occasionally, so anchoring isn’t always an option.

There’s no limit to length. Some yachts up to 70 feet have made the journey, but it’s a tight fit and most boats that long won’t make it under the bridges. Most Looper boats are under 50 feet, after all, for many reasons.

Think of the Great Loop as an RV adventure where you’re taking your home with you. To that end, realize you’ll be spending a lot of time living aboard your boat. Therefore, the boat should be comfortable, with indoor and outdoor living space and all the amenities you’d want or need.

Here’s a list of things most people want their boat equipped with when they set off on the Great Loop. Many of these are similar to the considerations people make when living on a sailboat , but some are quite different.

  • A comfortable bed, usually an “island queen” (not a v-berth)
  • A large galley (kitchen) with plenty of cooking space and the appliances they’re used to (fridge, microwave, coffee maker, stove, oven, etc.)
  • A comfortable living room (salon) that has a good view, lots of light, and plenty of ventilation
  • An outdoor patio (cockpit) area for open-air dining, socializing, and relaxing
  • A descent-sized bathroom area with a separate shower
  • Air conditioning and heating (which may require a generator if you plan to anchor overnight extensively)
  • Inside and outside helm positions (upper deck on a trawler)

Tankage refers to your boat’s storage space for liquids–water, fuel, and sewage. The larger the tanks are, the longer you can stay away from marinas for refills or pump-outs.

The Loop has several long stretches through the inland river system that go hundreds of miles between facilities and services. Therefore, your boat should have a fuel range of at least 450 nautical miles and hold enough water for at least a week.

Some river stretches have fewer gasoline sellers, meaning gas-powered boats need a greater range than diesel boats. They’ll need about 450 miles of range, whereas diesel boats can get by with less.

Beyond that, gas and diesel engines will both work fine on the Loop. Generally, the most popular trawlers and boats of this size come with diesels, which are praised for their longevity and reliable, simple operation. In addition, diesel is safer on a boat because it is less explosive, which could lower your insurance premiums.

Likewise, having a single or twin screw boat is a matter of preference. Single-engine boats can make the journey without problems, but two engines give you redundancy should something go wrong with one and better maneuverability in tight spaces. But, of course, operating and maintenance costs are higher with two engines.

How to Find the Best Boat for You for Sailing the Great Loop

The ideal boat will vary based on personal preferences, budget, and specific requirements for the journey. Here are key considerations to help you find the best boat for your Great Loop adventure:

  • Draft: The Great Loop has areas with shallow waters, especially in places like the western rivers and parts of the Intracoastal Waterway. A boat with a shallow draft (ideally less than 5 feet) will have more flexibility and fewer navigation concerns.
  • Air Draft: Bridges with fixed heights are a consideration along the Great Loop. To avoid detours, your boat’s air draft (the height from the waterline to the highest fixed point on the boat) should be less than 19 feet, though lower is often better to accommodate all routes.
  • Opt for a fuel-efficient boat that has a range of at least 300 miles to comfortably reach fueling stations along the Loop without anxiety, considering both the boat’s fuel capacity and its consumption rate.
  • Comfort is key for the long journey. Look for boats that offer adequate living space, a functional galley, comfortable sleeping quarters, and sufficient storage. The size and amenities should match your tolerance for space constraints and your lifestyle needs.
  • Choose a boat that handles well in various water conditions. Both inland rivers and lakes, as well as coastal sections of the Loop, can present challenges like currents, tides, and weather changes.
  • Trawlers, Sailboats (with a retractable mast for bridges), and Motor Yachts are popular choices because they balance living space, fuel efficiency, and navigability.
  • Sailboats can offer the advantage of wind power but consider the need to lower the mast for certain sections of the Loop.
  • Catamarans are another option, offering stability, shallow draft, and spacious living areas, but be mindful of their beam (width) and how it may limit access to certain marinas or slips.
  • Look for boats with easy access to the bow and stern, strong handholds, and a cockpit or helm that offers good visibility and protection from the elements.
  • Safety features should include reliable navigation and communication systems, life-saving equipment, and possibly a dinghy for exploring shallow or narrow areas.
  • Consider both the purchase price and the ongoing costs, including maintenance, fuel, marina fees, and potential upgrades. Buying a used boat can be a cost-effective option, but ensure a thorough inspection to assess its condition and suitability for the Loop.
  • Your comfort with the boat’s operation, maintenance requirements, and overall feel is crucial. Choose a boat that fits your level of boating experience or one that you’re willing and able to learn to handle confidently.
  • Join forums and groups, such as America’s Great Loop Cruisers’ Association (AGLCA), to gain insights from experienced Loopers.
  • Consider renting or chartering different types of boats for short trips to gain firsthand experience before making a decision.
  • Size/Draft: Boats should generally be less than 60 feet with a draft of 6 feet or under to navigate the various locks, rivers, and waterways along the route.
  • Propulsion: Twin engines or a single engine with a bow or stern thruster provides the best maneuverability and redundancy for covering long distances.
  • Fuel Capacity: A range of 350-400 miles between refueling is recommended to have a buffer given the distances between marinas in some regions.
  • Accommodations: Comfortable sleeping quarters, a functional galley, and enclosed head are needed for multi-day and multi-week trips.
  • Hull Type: Displacement hull trawlers, cruisers, and motor yachts are well-suited for the journey. Planing hulls can complete it but will take a fuel efficiency hit at slower canal speeds.
  • Navigation: GPS chartplotters, radar, depth finders, and other instruments and marine electronics for navigating varying conditions.
  • Operation: Vessel and systems should be completely reliable and redundant where possible given the several thousand mile journey.
  • Insurance/Documentation: Vessel documentation and insurance is required for coastal, Great Lakes portions.

Hopefully, this article has provided some ideas and examples of what your best Great Loop boat might be. Beyond a few hard limitations, it’s a matter of taste and style. There’s no right or wrong answer–you’ll often see many unexpected vessels doing the Loop.

If you’re considering the Loop, check out the America’s Great Loop Cruisers Association for more details.

What size boat is best for the Great Loop?

There’s no set size limit for length, but all boats looking to complete the Loop must pass under a low fixed bridge in the Chicago area. If your boat is more than 19 feet, 6 inches above the water, thou shall not pass.

What is the largest boat to complete the Great Loop?

Some people have reported that boats as long as 70 feet have completed the Loop. But taking a vessel of this size is not recommended, as you must navigate numerous tight locks and low bridges along the route. Most Loopers choose boats less than 50 feet long.

What is the smallest recommended boat for the Great Loop?

The smallest boat is the one that you’re comfortable on. Jet skis have completed the Loop, but they’re limited to staying in hotels or camping. It’s best to have a boat that will be comfortable to live on for the better part of a year. Most people want a boat at least 35 feet long to do that.

What is the average time to complete the Great Loop?

Most cruisers take about a year to do the Loop. Several factors affect this plan, and it’s always an individual choice. Generally, you’ll be northbound in the spring to be westbound through the Great Lakes in the summer. Then you “fall down” the rivers in the autumn so that you can over-winter in Florida. But many people take breaks, leave their boats in storage, and complete the Loop in sections. Furthermore, many folks want to take their time and enjoy the scenery. It’s not a race, after all.

Surfing both air and water on an e-foil from Fliteboard’s stable

Electric surfboards, the fastest-growing segment of yacht toys, make it possible to carve waves in even the flattest conditions.  Most foil-less e-boards don’t really look much like a surfboard, but still deliver a fast-running, sharp-turning surfing experience, thanks to compact electric motors and electronic hand controls.  The recent explosion of e-foil designs, from oversized models with handlebars for beginners to sleek, low-volume boards for advanced riders, means there’s a board for every enthusiast. Plus, foils deliver advantages. “Hydrofoils need less power and lighter batteries, so they extend run times,” notes David Trewern, founder of Fliteboard, one of the original e-board manufacturers. “It’s hard to beat that feeling of riding above the water.” A dozen competitors are looking to carve up their own slice of the market with feature-rich models for beginners to elite riders alike. Here are six of the big kahunas.

Fliteboard MN86

best 50 foot yacht 2023

Stylish, sturdy, and technical, the limited-edition Marc Newson Design series from Fliteboard is the ultimate e-foil for riders who want a beautiful stealth look and exceptional foiling. The pictured MN86 has a generous 5’4” x 26” footprint for riders that crave stability, while its sleeker sister boards, the MN60 and MN60 Wave, deliver faster speeds and tighter turns. All incorporate a monobloc design with advanced, high-modulus pre-preg (HMPP) construction that ultimately results in a lightweight, stiff ride. Its titanium conical wings are designed for minimal drag. The series, which will be limited to 999 examples, offer different wing options for varying conditions and an interactive color display on the hand controller that delivers data from every session. This e-foil lifts cool tech to a new level. From $19,995

Awake Vinga 3 SR

best 50 foot yacht 2023

The super-stable Vinga 3 SR, with its high volume and double-concave bottom, offers easy starts, low-speed planing, and forgiveness for mistakes. The 3 SR has a top speed of 31 mph for fast carving, with a riding time of up to two hours for exploration. Its deck is covered with a soft-grip pad for comfort while offering secure footing for the rider. Awake designed this as the beginners’ board to build skills for advanced e-foiling. From $13,900

Audi e-tron efoil Performance

best 50 foot yacht 2023

Aerofoils’ collaboration with Audi finds the automaker’s e-tron aesthetics integrated into a board that, with its tight turning radius, shares the marque’s penchant for agility. The pictured Performance model is just what it sounds like, offering advanced riders knife-like turning, fun in the surf and a top speed of 34.2 mph. The e-drive is integrated into the fuselage and pushes the wing directly, which Aerofoils says creates more stability and the potential for tighter curves. The e-foil also has up to two hours of battery life. From about $17,300

Lift4 Sport

best 50 foot yacht 2023

Lift’s new 57-inch-long, all-carbon-fiber Sport has sound-dampening technology and new wings—with multiple wing options for fast cruising or razor-sharp carving—that enhance stability at higher speeds. The add-on Blowfish attachment is an inflatable collar that goes around the edge of the Sport, offering even more stability or the ability to cruise seated, like a small boat. The Lift4 series also includes a 50-inch Pro model for advanced riders. From $12,995

best 50 foot yacht 2023

The E is the largest board in SiFly’s range, designed for beginners and heavier riders. But the design team didn’t skimp on style or a safe-but-thrilling ride. Its 6’3” length delivers stability, while its 28-mph top end is fast, but not scary fast. Battery life is two hours, while charging time is 2.5 hours. The E has two mast lengths and three wings that dial in stability and speed for specific owners in different conditions. From about $7,800

LIND Canvas

best 50 foot yacht 2023

Swedish newcomer LIND has reimagined the electric surfboard, sans foils, in a classic California style. Available in a shortboard or mid-length for different abilities, the Canvas is beautiful and lightweight, featuring modular construction that doesn’t require tools. It’s about as close to surfing as you can get without waves. The board weighs just 15 lbs., and the battery and jet can be carried separately in a custom backpack. The Canvas also features a compact, powerful and lightweight powertrain that delivers a top end of 37.2 mph. The craftsmanship on this board is exceptional. From $24,950
