Theo Stocker takes a fist look at the Pointer 25, a Dutch coastal cruiser that should offer plenty of cruising enjoyment in a 25ft package

Product Overview

The Pointer 25 has also been around since 2015, but has proved perennially popular for the Dutch builder Jachtweerf Heeg, particularly on the sheltered waters of the Netherlands. As with other mini cruisers, their size and fit out limits their RCD rating to Category B (Force 8, Offshore) or C (Force 6, Coastal), but few would consider an ocean crossing in a 25-footer these days.

The Pointer 25 is Category B, and has been designed around seaworthiness and enjoyable sailing. The Van de Stadt designed hull has a long waterline length and a reasonable beam carried aft, but rounded sections and a moderate rocker suggest a seakindly motion.

Fit out below is fairly basic, and is designed to be modular. A V-berth double forward and two singles aft make up four berths. A moulded liner keeps the boat clean and neat, if a little basic below. There’s a small galley forward to port, and a locker hiding the heads or chemical toilet to starboard – there’s no option for an enclosed heads.

Wires strung along the inside of the hull just below the deck allow stowage bags to be hung throughout the boat, offering a flexible and light weight stowage solution, though there isn’t stowage for much more than weekending. Headheight is limited to sitting, but this does allow the freeboard and coach roof to remain low and elegant.

You can specify a 4kW electric motor or the standard 10hp Yanmar diesel inboard.

On deck, a drop-down transom bathing platform encloses a large cockpit with full length bench seats, tiller steering and midships mainsheet anchor point. A sprayhood is an option, as is deckhardware for furling downwind sails, and either a genoa with cars or a self-tacking jib. The keel is a fairly shallow 1.10m with a lead bulb and and a generous 47% ballast/displacement ration, but a deeper 1.5m keel or shallower 0.80m keel with twin rudders are options; there’s no option for a lifting keel.

Attractive lines, real sailing pedigree and a simple layout on deck and below make this a boat that should be fun and easy to use.

DESIGNED AROUND SAILING ENJOYMENT

A quick look at the sleek contemporary hull lines of the POINTER 25 tell you that this small yacht is about real sailing pleasure. The low freeboard and low weight combine to create outstanding performance under sail. A fat head mainsail, a jib with an under-deck furler and a pre balanced rudder help to produce the complete enjoyment package. The fin keel with bulb carries a generous amount of ballast, making the POINTER 25 a very stiff boat with go anywhere appeal – even off-shore cruising thanks to a CE category of ‘B’.  Yet, two different keel options, a shoal draft 1.1m and a deeper 1.5m draft, enable this yacht to be customised to your sailing area. Other options include a self-tacking jib for shorthanded sailing as well as a range of easily manageable downwind sails flown off a purpose fitted bowsprit.

COMPACT COMFORT

Below deck the POINTER 25 is appointed as a real sailer’s boat. No stateroom accomodation here. Instead, the yacht offers a compact yet comfortable cabin with plenty of natural light from the large windows. A good size (2.1m long) v-berth and two (2.1m) saloonberths can easily accomodate a family of 4.  The cabin can be customised in a variety of  interior colour patterns. Other options to enhance comfort below deck include a galley unit, a marine heads, clever storage solutions and, even cabin heating.

Pointer 25 is a 25 ′ 3 ″ / 7.7 m monohull sailboat designed by E. G. Van de Stadt and built by Jachtwerf Heeg (NED) starting in 2014.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Like the Randmeer and the G2, the POINTER 25 was designed by the Van de Stadt Design studio. Jachtwerf Heeg asked the renowned designer to draw an elegant, modular boat for both the sporty sailor as well as the cruiser who wants to overnight on board in comfort.

The essence of the POINTER 25 is cabin yacht luxury in tandem with true sailing pleasure. The excellent sailing properties are the result of , among other things, the fathead mainsail, the furling jib that sits on a below-deck drum and the modern below the weaterline hull with a bulb keel and spade rudder. Singlehanded sailors can choose for a self-tacking jib.

With a draft of only 1.10m and an inboard diesel engine, this boat is highly suited for shallow offshore waters and lakes. The POINTER 25 falls into the CE category B rating, seaworthy. Based on personal modules, you can configure the POINTER 25 interior and equipment and style the boat to your own taste.

Die POINTER 25 wurde, genau wie die Randmeer und G2 entworfen von Van de Stadt Design. Jachtwerf Heeg hat die bekannten Konstrukteure nun gefragt, ein elegantes und modulares Boot zu entwerfen, das gleichermaßen dem sportiven, wie dem erholungssuchenden Segler gerecht wird, der auch mal an Bord übernachten mag.

Die Basis für die POINTER 25 ist der Luxus einer Kajütyacht in Kombination mit echtem Segelspaß. Die herausragenden Segeleigenschaften basieren, unter anderem, auf dem Fat Head Großsegel, Rollfock mit unter Deck verbauter Trommel und dem modernen Unterwasserschiff mit Kielbombe und durchgestecktem, vorballancierten Ruder.

Mit einem Tiefgang von 1,10 Metern (optional 1,50 Meter) und Einbaudiesel ist das Boot gleichermaßen geeignet für Binnengewässer, für Küstennahes Segeln etwa auf dem Ijsselmeer oder der Wattensee. Die POINTER 25 ist entworfen nach der CE Kategorie B.
