Exclusive: Lurssen launches 122m Project JAG with Jaguar Emblem under bowsprit

By Editorial Team 10 August 2023
Earlier today Lurssen flooded their floating dock at their Rendsburg facility to launch Project JAG , shrouded in secrecy throughout her build this is the first glimpse of the newly finished 122m (400ft) superyacht being built for an experienced owner.
At the time of her technical launch back in June 2021, we believed that her extended bowsprit would be used as an area to display the owner's American football team mascot from the Jacksonville Jaguars as seen on his last yacht. However, looking at these exclusive first sneak photos it appears that her designers have come up with a new approach and that a Jaguar mascot has been designed under the bowsprit instead.
As can be seen in the photos above - it appears that there is a stylized pouncing Jaguar under the bowsprit, reminiscent of Jaguar motor car's famous Leaping Jaguar logo hood ornaments which were first introduced in 1945. This is another example of how Italian design powerhouse Nuvolari & Lenard likes to push the boundaries of yacht design to the next level and break the norm.
In 2014 the owner's 95m/312ft superyacht KISMET caused quite a stir after turning up in London, as the yacht crew attached a beautiful silver Jaguar mascot to her bow. Positioned with one paw in the air and the other resting on an American football helmet, the majestic cat is a striking addition to the spectacular Espen Oeino-designed motor yacht.
Traditionally, bowsprits were only found on sailing yachts where the stays of the foremast are fastened. However, over the last decade, bowsprits are increasingly seen on motor yachts , used by designers to add extra LOA and a creative extension of the aesthetic design. The 90m/295 luxury charter yacht 'Phoenix 2’ , also built by Lürssen was one of the first, featuring a stunning silver Phoenix on her bowsprit which appears to be about to take flight.
The beautiful 73m (239.6ft) superyacht TITANIA also features a captivating bowsprit, adorned with a silver mascot of a woman leaning out towards the ocean.
What we know about Project Jag
Commissioned by an owner who has bought two Lurssen superyachts in the past, Project Jag boasts an elongated appearance with a contrasting monochrome hull and superstructure plus abundant exterior deck space, ideal for multiple alfresco dining and lounge options. Creating a unique visual effect, Project Jag has an elegant curve along each side of her superstructure, merging her black and white monotones towards the stern.
Interiors that can accommodate up to 20 guests in an 11-cabin layout have been penned by Reymond Langton, and are described as a "beautiful, bespoke homage to the owner’s lifestyle", by the shipyard.
Set to be a trendsetter in multiple ways, standout features of the striking four-deck superyacht look to include a helipad, an indulgent health and wellness area plus a swimming pool, indoor and outdoor cinemas, and a state-of-the-art gym.
At this time it is not clear if Project Jag will be available as a yacht charter upon delivery. However, to discover Lürssen vessels that are currently for rental, take a look at the range of Lürssen yachts available to charter .

Fall in love with your yacht all over again
Refit and conversion
If you can imagine it, we can make it happen
Allow us to bring out the hidden potential your yacht holds. Whether your vessel is a luxury motor yacht, superyacht or gigayacht, whether she was originally built by Lürssen or another shipyard, we have the expertise and technology to give her a second life. Our refit and conversion specialists will advise you and explore the virtually unlimited possibilities to restore your yacht to her original splendour or expand and enhance her performance, features and appearance. Regardless of which type of work you wish to carry out, you can rely on Lürssen for full support and efficient execution in the finest tradition of German engineering and shipbuilding excellence.
Tell us about your ideas or let us inspire you.
Preserving and enhancing value
Refits and conversions large and small will not only add more comfort and convenience to your beloved yacht, but also safeguard and increase her value. Your project may be as small-scale as creating a new interior look and feel or as extensive as major technological improvements – either way, we will enable you to realise your wishes. At Lürssen, we see refit and conversion measures not as an expression of dissatisfaction with your vessel, but rather as a way of caring for the yacht you cherish. You will be blessed not only with even more yachting pleasure, but also with an opportunity to fall in love with your yacht all over again.
When is it time for a refit?
The age of the yachts we refit and the reasons for carrying out the projects are as varied as the owners and vessels. Generally, refits coincide with remedial work or technological upgrades. Many owners discover unanticipated wishes after several years of yachting, and a refit or conversion is the perfect opportunity to make them come true.
Milestones on the path to the rebirth
A refit project is a fascinating journey that begins with our initial consultations and ends with the rebirth of your yacht. Yet the relationship we develop with you and your vessel continues beyond delivery: Lürssen remains at your side to handle any issues, support you and – years later – talk about the next upgrade. The timeline below lets your explore the milestones.
Contact: you approach us with a yacht in need of attention.
First steps: we talk, visit the yacht and gather your ideas and wishes for the interior and exterior.
The proposal: once we have drawn up a job list, we work the numbers and give you a firm quote.
Proposal review: your representatives (owner’s team) look carefully at our numbers and we fine-tune the offer to suit your needs and wishes.
Confirmation: we finalize the agreement and prepare to go ahead with the project.
The refit: your yacht is in our shipyard and we work our "magic".
Delivery: you take possession of your reborn yacht.
Follow-up: we remain in touch with you and your yacht, take care of any repairs and warranties.
The next project: after several more years of world-class yachting, we start talking about the next refit.
Why trust Lürssen with your refit?

The right shipyard for any yacht, any size
Lürssen is equipped to handle any size and type of yacht – from smaller and mid-sized vessels to the world’s largest superyachts and gigayachts.
Conveniently located for you and your team: Hamburg, Bremen and Rendsburg
Germany’s northern cities are easy to reach by sea and air. They also offer excellent accommodations, entertainment and cultural activities.
3 refit centres: Hamburg, Bremen & Rendsburg
With dock capacities of up to 351 meters, our Hamburg facility is ideal for complex repair, refit, conversion and servicing of various ship classes. The state-of-the-art shipyard was originally established in 1877, and acquired by Lürssen in 2016. It covers an area of 451,000m 2 and features one of the largest graving docks in northern Europe. Our Bremen facilities, with a total area of 198,700m 2 , are fully equipped for sophisticated conversions, refits and maintenance projects. Located directly on the Kiel Canal, which links the North and Baltic Seas, Lürssen Rendsburg specializes in refits and maintenance of smaller-to-mid-sized yachts.
Welcoming communities
Germany’s largest port, Hamburg has a grand maritime tradition reaching back many centuries. As a seafaring city, Hamburg is open to the world and has a colourful international community. Our Hamburg shipyard, one of the seafront’s dominating features, is in easy walking distance from shops, bars and outstanding restaurants offering local and international cuisine. Bremen, though smaller, is no less steeped in international seafaring tradition. Its history of maritime trade is reflected in the stately Hanseatic buildings surrounding the Market Square. The cosy town of Rendsburg on the river Eider became accessible to larger ships in the late 19th century, when the Kiel Canal was completed.
Even more reasons to refit with Lürssen
Whether your refit takes place at Hamburg or at another one of our eight shipyards, we make sure your team feels right at home. Like the maritime metropolis Hamburg, the cities across northern Germany where our facilities are located are welcoming and open-minded with fascinating cultural and entertainment opportunities.
Captains & Crews
The wellbeing of your refit team, captain and crew is important to us. With local support, entertainment and services, we make sure their stay in northern Germany is enjoyable. That means morale stays high and your project runs smoothly.
Lifetime support
The yachting life is all about luxury travel and entertainment in complete freedom. To ensure that your yacht life is totally free of care and complications, we offer comprehensive lifetime support for your vessel. Our services provide not only peace of mind and pure yachting pleasure, but also make sure your yacht stays as strikingly beautiful as the day she embarked on her maiden voyage.

It's likely the 75m Project Honolulu , as Project Cosmos and Project Jassj are both in the two floating docks. The fire appears to have started in the main shipbuilding shed, but I’m not completely certain. Judging by the massive smoke, the damage to the yacht is probably substantial. A few news reports mentioned that the yacht in the shed was close to completion…

Fire on Lürssen shipyard at NOK: parts of Schacht-Audorf evacuated Status: 02.07.2024 14:08 Since the morning, a hall of Lürssen shipyard has been in flames at Rendsburg. The terrain and parts of Schacht-Audorf are evacuated. Numerous emergency services are on site, and ships support the firefighting work from the channel. Large fire brigade operation at the Lürssen shipyard in Schacht-Audorf in the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde . According to the fire department, a ship's hall is completely in flames. More than 200 volunteers are on site, and more are requested. The fire brigade estimates that the deployment will last until the night. According to the police, there is also a yacht in the affected hall, which is now also burning - the Lürssen-Kröger shipyard is known, among other things, for the construction of yachts. Shipyard and areas of Schacht-Audorf are evacuated According to the fire, the fire is now under control. According to the police, however, the roof of the hall and parts of the facade collapsed. Explosions were heard time and again. Therefore, the site of the shipyard was evacuated. Because the smoke is now moving to a residential area, residents in parts of Schacht-Audorf also have to leave their homes. According to the police, there are 30 people. Affected persons can stay in the primary and community school Schacht-Audorf at Dorfstraße 60 announced the Office. A dark smoke was visible in the morning. Already in the morning, residents in the area of Hüttenstraße were asked to keep windows and doors closed and to switch off ventilation and air conditioning. Kiel Canal near Schacht-Audorf According to the police, it began to "cake" in the yacht in the hall this morning. Shortly after, the first smoke was seen. Because of the heat, the fire occurred. "The hall is in flames, the boat is in flames," said a police spokesman. Since the morning, the fire brigade has been trying to cool the hall walls from the outside in order to reduce the temperature inside the hall. According to a fire spokesman, the attempt to extinguish the fire from the inside had to be broken off, because parts of the hall were threatening to collapse. According to the police, there is a yacht in the burning hall, which is also on fire. According to the police, there is a tug on the Kiel Canal to cool with water if necessary. An NOK ferry with a water cannon will also support the fire brigade's emergency services. However, the canal is not closed to navigation. For safety reasons, two rescue helicopters were also sent to Lürssen-Werft. In addition, there are numerous ambulances on site. According to the police and fire department, one person was injured - she suffered a slight flue gas poisoning, as the police said. This element is on servers of Datawrapper.de. "This is where our company burns off, or at least a part of it," said employee Thomas Rathmann. "There are hundreds of jobs hanging on, there are suppliers hanging on, and we don't know what will happen at the moment."

Again?! No...I mean...again? What's going on with Lurssen? Are they losing their grip? All those accidents that are happening (don't forget about project Ice Cap during sea trials) are detrimental to the reputation and relationships with insurance companies. They are lucky that there are not other shipyards like them.

Only guessing but I think Lurssen is suffering from what other industrial companies are feeling as well: Skilled old time workers who are/were proud of their work and commited to do a good job are retiring or have retired. Their younger successors quite often have a different attitude towards work and work ethics. A lot of them might not have gone through the German apprenticeship system but trained on the job and might therefore lack to see the broader picture of a job. In my experience (different country/different industry but similar problems) this tends to increase the number of incidents and if you are Lurssen everybody is watching you!
