The Top River Cruise Lines

Top River Cruises

Not one for the high seas? Explore the world along its rivers instead.

If you'd like to take a cruise but aren't interested in the hustle and bustle of a massive ocean liner, consider a river cruise. River cruises offer the chance to visit lesser-known ports around the world, thanks to the small size and maneuverability of the vessels. These sailings are known to provide exceptional, personalized service, as most welcome fewer than 200 guests at a time. On top of that, you'll spend the majority of your trip exploring a different port each day, as most destinations along the waterways are fairly close together.

Read on to discover the best river cruise lines around the world, with details about where they sail, the number of passengers you can expect onboard, a snapshot of amenities and experiences, and sentiment from recent travelers.

CroisiEurope Cruises

Viking Longship Idun on the Main River in front of Johannisburg Palace, Aschaffenburg, Germany.

Number of passengers: 75 to 250 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, U.S.

Viking's 60-plus ships – known as longships – traverse major rivers across Europe, including the Danube , the Rhine, the Douro and more. Other popular routes sail Egypt's Nile River as well as the Mississippi River , and newer options include a series of Great Lakes itineraries.

What to expect: Travelers may be familiar with Viking Ocean Cruises , which operates larger ocean voyages with an emphasis on opulent accommodations and diverse enrichment activities. Viking's river cruises follow a similar road map, with meals, daily walking tours and Wi-Fi access (where applicable) included in the base fare. Other amenities and activities span guest lectures, cooking demonstrations, musical performances, libraries, outdoor decks and more. Select Viking riverboats are also equipped with swimming pools, while cabins feature minibars, premium toiletries, purified water and TVs.

On board, you can expect to find mostly English-speaking passengers. Viking's price point generally attracts older crowds in the 55-plus age group, and travelers must be at least 18 years old to cruise on the line.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers thoroughly enjoyed their experience with Viking, praising the scenic shore excursions, top-notch service and comfortable rooms. Some, however, expressed disappointment with the service as well as the food.

Uniworld offers luxurious sailings in historic cities across central Europe, France , Italy , Portugal , India, Egypt and Peru.

What to expect: Its 17 ships aim to create the feel of a boutique hotel with stylish decor, antique artwork and specialty restaurants. The ships hold an average capacity of 120 cruisers, and the company boasts one of the highest staff-to-guest ratios in the industry: about one crew member for every two travelers.

Stateroom amenities vary by vessel but may include marble bathrooms, Egyptian cotton linens, French balconies, iPod docking stations, Nespresso coffee machines, rainfall showers and more. The line's all-inclusive rates cover meals, alcoholic beverages, select excursions, gratuities, onboard fitness classes and Wi-Fi access, on top of entertainment and enrichment classes. Uniworld prides itself on its top-notch cuisine, which is made with local ingredients sourced from the ports on your itinerary and also includes vegetarian and vegan options.

Uniworld's typical clientele tend to be in their 50s or 60s and reside in North America, the U.K. and Australia . The river cruise line has select itineraries aimed at families, LGBTQ cruisers and solo travelers.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers offered abundant praise for Uniworld's voyages, complimenting the stylish accommodations, attentive staff and fascinating excursions. Though complaints were few and far between, a handful of past travelers felt the experience was not worth the high price point.

American Cruise Lines ship on river during sunset.

Courtesy of American Cruise Lines

Number of passengers: 90 to 180 Sails to:  U.S.

As the name suggests, American Cruise Lines sails exclusively on the rivers and coastlines of the United States. Popular cruises visit destinations along the Mississippi River, on the Hudson River, throughout New England , and lining the Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest. The line also tours Alaska , the Southeast coast including Florida , and the Puget Sound between Washington state and the Canadian border.

What to expect: American Cruise Lines operates 19 relatively new small ships and river vessels (the average ship is about 5 years old), ranging from modern riverboats to small coastal ships to authentic paddlewheelers. Comfortable cabins can accommodate up to three people per room, and all ships offer single staterooms designed exclusively for solo travelers . Each room boasts picture windows, a spacious bathroom and – in some cases – a private balcony. In the ships' public spaces, cruisers can enjoy daily onboard entertainment like jazz and blues performances, as well as presentations by historians and area experts.

The line promises an all-American experience. As such, you can expect to find American staff aboard the American-built ships as well as food that pays homage to the destinations you will visit, from New Orleans -style andouille sausage gumbo to New England-inspired seafood boils. Complimentary cocktails and hors d'oeuvres are served every night prior to dinner; all meals, snacks, and wine and beer are included in the base fare. Shore excursions are not typically included in the rate.

Passengers on American Cruise Lines tend to lean North American and are typically mature retired travelers.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers enjoyed their experience, particularly on the line's themed cruises.

Number of passengers: 28 to 196 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, South America

Consider a river cruise with AmaWaterways, whether you're looking to sail through the heart of Europe or seeking a once-in-a-lifetime adventure touring destinations like Vietnam, Egypt, South Africa or (beginning in 2024) Colombia. A family-owned business founded in 2002, AmaWaterways operates 29 river cruise boats that welcome 150 passengers on average.

The cruise line aims to provide excursion-rich experiences and offers unique themed sailings for passengers with certain interests. Wine-themed voyages are perfect for oenophiles wishing to explore some of Europe's most popular wine regions, while a concierge golf program will transport passengers from one famous golf course to the next. Or, opt for a holiday river cruise to visit magical Christmas markets around Europe. In 2024, AmaWaterways will offer three new Black history-themed itineraries.

What to expect: On board, guests can expect cabins suitable for couples or single travelers, as well as a set amount of connectible rooms designed for multigenerational families. Staterooms are spacious, with perks like bathrobes, slippers and plush bedding. Cabins can feature up to two balconies with AmaWaterways' twin balcony design, which allows for a full, step-out balcony alongside a French balcony with sliding glass doors. In-room Wi-Fi is complimentary, and guests will have access to movies and music on demand.

Outside of their cabins, passengers can enjoy amenities spanning small pools, sun decks, fitness equipment, a hair salon, massage services and more.

AmaWaterways primarily attracts North American travelers in their 50s who enjoy taking part in active shore excursions that involve walking or cycling. Passengers from the U.K. and Australia sail on this river cruise line as well. You can expect to find a mix of couples, families and solo cruisers – including a growing number of millennial travelers – on your vessel, thanks to AmaWaterways' diverse cabin offerings. Adventures by Disney charters AmaWaterways ships for select sailings each year as well.

What travelers say: Recent travelers say AmaWaterways exceeded their expectations, with many noting it was especially enjoyable for families. Still, some were disappointed, particularly with the food.

Number of passengers: 16 to 166 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, South America

Avalon Waterways sails 19 riverboats along popular thoroughfares like the Danube, the Rhone, the Seine, the Nile, the Rhine, the Moselle, the Mekong, the Ganges and more. In 2024, it will also sail the Douro River in Portugal.

What to expect: Launched in 2004, Avalon stands out for its spacious vessels – known as Suite Ships – which feature some of the largest rooms in the river cruise industry and beds that face wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows, providing panoramic views. Additional stateroom perks include complimentary breakfast in bed, L'Occitane toiletries, sitting areas, ample storage space and mattress toppers.

Across the ship, passengers can enjoy amenities like a sun deck with lounge chairs, whirlpools and a game area, in addition to numerous restaurants and bars and a 24-hour self-serve coffee station. You will also have your pick of Classic, Active or Discovery shore excursions – ranging from standard tours with a local guide to hiking outings along a hilltop castle – depending on your interests and physical abilities.

Avalon Waterways attracts English-speaking cruisers from a variety of countries, typically in their 50s and 60s. However, children ages 8 and older are welcome on board (though there are no designated kids clubs), and some voyages draw younger or older passengers.

What travelers say: Most recent reviews are positive, with travelers highlighting the friendly, knowledgeable staff and tasty food.

Number of passengers: 84 to 130 Sails to:  Europe

Travel company Tauck wears multiple hats: It operates small-ship voyages around the world, land tours across seven continents, small group journeys for an average of 24 travelers at a time, family tours and – finally – European river cruises. Six new river itineraries in Europe are on the docket for 2024. Take your pick from nine river vessels to explore popular waterways like the Douro, the Moselle, the Rhine, the Danube and the Rhone.

What to expect: All-inclusive fares cover shore excursions, onboard activities and entertainment, gratuities, beverages and more. Plus, Tauck offers exclusive access to unforgettable experiences like wine tastings at private vineyards and gala dinners in historic castles.

More than 80% of the staterooms feature French balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing for excellent views. Other in-room amenities may include adjustable climate controls, satin linens, pillow-top mattresses, terry cloth robes and more. Outside of your cabin, you'll find perks such as a sun deck, a putting green, enrichment programs like cooking demonstrations, a fitness center and complimentary bikes for onshore exploring.

Tauck caters to affluent, English-speaking cruisers – primarily Americans in the 55-and-older age group – though you may also find families with adult children on board. The line appeals most to travelers who prefer all the details of their trip to be taken care of for them, versus those who like to plan activities independent of the cruise line.

What travelers say: Recent passengers generally speak highly of their Tauck river cruise experiences, pointing to the exceptional level of organization and spacious, luxurious accommodations. Others said they were underwhelmed for the price.

Aerial of Emerald Cruises river cruise ship on river in Urbar, Germany.

Number of passengers: 84 to 180 Sails to:  Europe, Asia

Previously known as Emerald Waterways, Emerald Cruises transports travelers across some of the most popular rivers in Europe and Asia, including the Danube, the Rhine, the Douro and the Mekong.

What to expect: The cruise fare covers all meals, beverages with lunch and dinner, daily shore excursions − which include more physically rigorous options called EmeraldACTIVE – Wi-Fi access and gratuities.

Emerald operates nine river vessels, all of which boast luxurious public spaces and accommodations with en suite bathrooms and flat-screen TVs. Common-area amenities span heated indoor pools, sun decks, spa and wellness facilities, and a variety of eateries. Onboard fitness classes are available, as are other forms of entertainment. On shore, cruisers can borrow bicycles to explore historic city centers.

Typical clientele aboard Emerald Cruises' voyages includes American and British passengers around retirement age, though some younger travelers may make an appearance as well. Children 12 and older are permitted on board and on tours, but there are no kids clubs or designated activities for younger cruisers. Special rooms and dinner reservations are available for solo travelers.

What travelers say: Cruisers on recent sailings – especially first-time sailors – enjoyed their experiences on Emerald Cruises. High points included the attentive crew members and the stress-free booking and planning process. However, some felt that customer service and communication were subpar.

Number of passengers: 68 to 163 Sails to: Europe, Asia

From the Danube to the Mekong, Australian travel company Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours offers lavish, all-inclusive river sailings with an emphasis on customization. The more upscale sister brand of Emerald Cruises, Scenic affords travelers the opportunity to do as much or as little as they want while on board and ashore.

What to expect: Enrichment activities are hand-picked by the line's "Journey Designers," and vessels provide a top-notch level of service thanks to their high crew-to-passenger ratios. In fact, each passenger receives a designated butler who can complete nightly turndowns and make laundry arrangements, among other tasks.

Spacious suites on board are larger than those on most other riverboats (ranging from 160 to 510 square feet). High-tech balcony controls allow lodgers to let in as much air as they'd like with the touch of a button. Cruisers will also enjoy special in-room touches like pillow menus, slippers and robes.

When it comes to dining, Scenic sources local ingredients and culinary inspiration from the ports visited on the itinerary to provide an authentic experience. All meals are included in the base cruise fare, along with beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi access, shore excursions and electric bicycle usage in select destinations.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers were pleased with their experiences aboard Scenic's vessels, praising the spacious cabins, pampering butler service, and knowledgeable crew members and tour guides. However, some travelers were particularly disappointed with the food.

Side view of CroisiEurope Cruises river cruise ship.

Helwin Goetzinger | Courtesy of CroisiEurope

Number of passengers: 22 to 200 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa

CroisiEurope is a family-run French cruise line that has been in business since 1976. This line has more than 50 ships and barges that sail to countries around the world, including Egypt, Cambodia and Spain . Unusual in river cruising, the line operates two custom-built ships that sail on Lake Kariba in southern Africa. Additionally, CroisiEurope has a division that sells barge cruises throughout France on six different canals, such as Burgundy or Provence.

What to expect: CroisiEurope is known for its wide range of destinations and is one of the only river cruise lines that operates custom-built ships on Germany 's Elbe river, the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers in Spain and Portugal, and Venice 's canals. Onboard accommodations are relatively basic, which keeps the cruise fare to a budget-friendly minimum. The cruise line aims to provide the best value for money in the cruise industry. Cuisine is focused on French food with some local flair in the main dining room, which is included in the cruise fare.

The passenger mix on a CroisiEurope cruise is relatively international, featuring large contingencies from France, Germany, the U.K. and North America. Announcements are typically given in both French and English. The cruise line sees a mix of older couples and groups as well as younger families, depending on the itinerary and time of year.

What travelers say: Several cruisers echoed that some of CroisiEurope's river ships are due for a refurbishment and that internet connectivity leaves a lot to be desired, while others maintain that the experience was superb.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Size: River cruise ships are smaller in size and the number of passengers they can accommodate, with one lounge and one main dining room being a typical setup.
  • Atmosphere: The overall vibe on a river cruise is more relaxed and far less busy than that of an ocean liner.
  • Onboard entertainment: River cruising is notoriously sleepy at night, with a focus instead on local enrichment like cooking demonstrations or liqueur tastings. Due to the busy schedule of port calls and excursions, most passengers are tired after a long day of sightseeing and don't mind a lack of nightlife.
  • Excursions: Most of your time on a river cruise is spent out exploring the destinations, which can sometimes be two stops in a single day. Passengers can choose from a variety of activities in port – including biking, kayaking and hiking – or explore the destination at a leisurely pace.
  • Cuisine: Cuisine tends to be focused on local specialties but is prepared to accommodate predominantly American tastes. Not every river cruise line offers unlimited drinks, but the majority include beer and wine at lunch and dinner, often showcasing regional varieties.
  • Price: River cruising typically comes at a much higher price point than ocean-based itineraries.
  • American Queen

Note that inclusions can vary by cruise line. For example, Viking rates – while not fully all-inclusive – cover beer and wine at meals and one tour per day, while gratuities and other drink packages are left to the discretion of the guest.

Avalon Waterways, on the other hand, offers a number of included tours in every port on select itineraries that range from cultural or culinary-focused to active.

In terms of inclusions and service ratios (the number of crew on board to guests), the following river cruise lines are considered the most luxurious:

Onboard accommodation.

Staterooms vary from ship to ship, but one thing is certain, it’s guaranteed to be your home away from home for a few days. Let’s get acquainted with some staterooms and suites that might be on your ship.

Typical Suite Stateroom onboard a river cruise ship

Suites are often situated in the most desirable location on the ship: on the top deck, either right in the front or back (for ultimate panoramic views) or midship (for stability). Typically suites are the largest of the staterooms onboard, some having more amenities than others.  Standard Size:  295 - 600 sq. ft.

Typical Dual Balcony Stateroom onboard a river cruise ship

Dual balcony stateroom

The Dual Balcony Stateroom combines your walk-out veranda and seating area with a french balcony to enjoy the sights while sitting indoors. Standard Size: 175 - 215 sq. ft.

Typical French Balcony Stateroom onboard a river cruise ship

French balcony stateroom

These staterooms will have a floor to ceiling glass door/slider that opens to allow fresh air to flow through. You will not be able to stand outside and there is no seating area outdoors. Standard Size: 175 - 215 sq. ft.

Typical Balcony Stateroom onboard a river cruise ship

Balcony stateroom

Some ships offer a full-sized veranda and seating area outdoors through a floor-to-ceiling glass door. These balconies are generally 3-4 feet deep and 10-16 feet in length depending on the stateroom size. Standard Size: 175 - 215 sq. ft.

Typical Window Stateroom onboard a river cruise ship

Window stateroom

These staterooms are on the lower level of the ship and the windows are positioned above water level. Please note that some operators refer to window staterooms as river-view rooms. The windows are usually about 5 feet above the floor, which is shoulder height for most. This window does not open. Standard Size: 125 - 170 sq. ft.

Typical Single Stateroom onboard a river cruise ship

Single stateroom

This is a specially designed stateroom for solo travellers which has grown in popularity in recent years. The perk? Travellers don’t have to pay for a single supplement fee. Please note this category is extremely limited in availability and do not exist on all ships.   Standard Size: 120 - 160 sq. ft.

Your River Cruise trips questions, answered

When will i receive my travel documents.

You can expect to receive your travel documents approximately 3-4 weeks prior to departure  once you have paid for your cruise. Your documents usually include eTicket receipts, itineraries, and other essential information for your adventure.

Are shore excursions and meals included?

Most cruises on TourRadar include breakfast, lunch, and dinner served on board, with the exception of only a few operators. Depending on your river cruise operator, shore excursions may be included in the cost of your adventure. Please contact your TourRadar Cruise Consultant for a full list of inclusions.

When and where do I board the ship?

All embarkation details are included within your final travel documents. Typically boarding starts at 3:00 pm to allow the crew enough time to prepare your stateroom and get the ship ready for your cruise. Weather, water levels, and ship scheduling can influence the final docking location for your ship, so please wait until you receive your final travel documents before you arrange flights or accommodations.

Are transfers to and from the port included?

Some river cruise operators include complimentary arrival and departure transfers within your total tour cost. If transfers are not included, please contact your TourRadar Cruise Consultant to purchase airport transfers.

What facilities will be in my room?

Most staterooms feature a good-sized bed, towels, hairdryers, a writing desk, charging ports, and ample storage space. Some ships also have laundry facilities onboard for an extra charge. Of course, these can vary from room to room and ship to ship, so please check out the Ship Details on your adventure—or contact your TourRadar Cruise Consultant—to see the full list of inclusions.

Can I take a wheelchair onboard?

Some ships are unable to accommodate travelers in wheelchairs due to difficulties with embarking and disembarking the ship, no onboard elevators, and narrow doorways on board. For travelers who use a collapsible wheelchair, they must be stored in the stateroom, which can sometimes be a tight squeeze. Please contact your TourRadar Cruise Consultant for more information.

Can I board the ship early?

If the ship is already docked, many river cruise companies will allow you to store your luggage onboard   prior to embarkation,  allowing you to explore your embarkation destination before you begin your cruise. As the crew needs to get the ship ready for your cruise, travelers are unable to stay on the ship during this time and need to wait until the embarkation time to board the ship.

Can I cruise as a solo traveler?

Yes, absolutely! However, please keep in mind that ship cabins and staterooms are designed for double occupancy and do not offer the option to share with another solo traveler, so generally, a mandatory single supplement is required . The only exception is a cruise with Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection , as they pair solo travelers together on their river cruises. See adventures with no single supplements

Lower Mississippi River Cruises

The Mississippi River is filled with diverse, culturally rich regions that promise historical, musical, and gustatory experiences unlike those found anywhere else in the world.

For this reason, our cruises are customized to suit the experience you are seeking — whatever that may be.

Are you a Civil War history buff? Do you treasure the writings of Mark Twain? Or do you seek a Mardi Gras full of dance, color, and delicious food? Prefer small towns and Southern hospitality?

No matter what aspect of this mighty river and its many facets appeals to you, we have the cruise of your dreams.

With ports of call that span the region — from St. Paul, Minnesota, (for our Upper Mississippi river cruises) to New Orleans, you’ll feel like the king and/or queen of the Mississippi.

Explore from St. Louis to St. Paul to St. Francisville — and points both north and south — with USA River Cruises on one of our quintessential American cruise line adventures!

Your Lower Mississippi Itinerary

You’ll enjoy between six and 22 days of fabulous food, music, camaraderie, and relaxation. Sit on the deck of one of our gorgeous paddle wheelers. This fantastic mode of travel slows life down and allows you to soak up every ounce of beauty along this iconic body of water.

Consider just a few of our fabulous Mississippi cruises: New Orleans to Memphis.

If you arrive in New Orleans a few days before the cruise launches, you have the opportunity to fully explore and experience the wealth of cultural amenities that abound in the Big Easy, including:

The Garden District : A fabulous and historic neighborhood, filled with oak-lined boulevards, grand mansions, and, of course, lush gardens. It’s also the location of the famed Lafayette Cemetery, which is the final resting place of several historical figures, including John Howard Ferguson, who was the defendant in the Supreme Court’s Plessy v. Ferguson decision that established the “separate but equal” doctrine that was later overturned in the 1950s.

French Quarter : No trip to New Orleans is complete without at least a walk-through of the famous district. Here you’ll find Bourbon Street — the beating heart of Mardis Gras — and Jackson Square, where ceremonies marking the transfer of the Louisiana Purchase territory from France to the United States took place in 1803.

Once you board our magnificent cruise ships, you’ll get to explore both the history and the modern amenities of the Big Muddy — as the Mississippi is sometimes called. You’ll cruise from New Orleans to Memphis, Tennessee (or the reverse!). It’s Mississippi Delta living at its finest.

Along the way, you’ll visit several more fabulous locations, including Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the state capital and home to Louisiana State University.

You’ll also experience wonderful Natchez, Mississippi, home to indigenous culture stretching back hundreds of years. You can even visit Longwood Plantation, which remains unfinished because workers abandoned it to fight in the Civil War. This is history at its most intimate and immediate.

One last point of interest (among many on your journey): Vicksburg, Mississippi, where you can tour the Vicksburg National Military Park and see for yourself artifacts of early American history, including gunboats and Civil War battlefields.

If you travel upriver, you’ll disembark at Memphis, but there’s a lot more to explore along the Mississippi, including St. Louis, Missouri, just a few hours upriver from Memphis. (Check out our other Mississippi cruises for more info.) If you travel downriver (Memphis to New Orleans), the sights and scenes are just as magical, and the sounds — from blues to bluegrass and rock ‘n’ roll — are as diverse as the scenery.

  • American Serenade

We want to pause for a moment to make sure our guests know about an exciting addition to our Lower Mississippi river cruises: the American Serenade — ready to set sail in 2023!

It’s fitting that the overture to American Serenade’s cruise season will begin on the legendary Mississippi River. A with her sister ship, the American Symphony, the 175-passenger American Serenade features an updated modern interior design that integrates an elegant and refined aesthetic into our tradition for spacious comfort.

This ship’s interior design was inspired by the geography of the United States of America. The new interior design highlights natural textual elements and serene color palettes.

American Serenade also showcases panoramic views throughout, including an impressive four-story glass atrium in the center of the ship.

And let’s not forget the accommodations. Ranging from a cozy 250 square feet to an expansive 650 square feet, all of its spacious staterooms offer full-size bathrooms, roomy closets, and private balconies where you can enjoy daily breakfast room service.

The new ship also features an onboard fitness center and many spacious lounges where you can relax after the day’s adventures.

Ready to set sail on a Lower Mississippi River cruise?

USA River Cruises: Your Destination Awaits!

Our booking agents are ready to answer any questions you may have and to accommodate any and all special needs.

Each member of our staff is uniquely qualified to customize the trip of a lifetime. Most of us have taken these cruises ourselves and are intimately familiar with every detail of the journey, making us the best possible resource for you.

USA River Cruises specializes in rail trips and small-ship cruises. This means our ships typically hold fewer than 900 passengers — more often than not it’s much fewer than that!

We’re based in Vancouver, Washington, just across the mighty Columbia River from Portland, Oregon. Thus, our passion began locally, with ships on the Columbia. However, we have grown to appreciate river cruise vacations all over the United States — as well as all over the world!

Our agents are friendly and responsive; most have personal experience on board many of our ships. That’s why USA River Cruise agents are the small-ship cruising and cruise vacation experts.

Call us! We’re excited to help you launch your Mississippi River cruise.

7 best US river cruises

Donna Heiderstadt

Whether you're fascinated by American history, culture and cuisine, or you've enjoyed river cruising in Europe but are now looking to explore closer to home, U.S. river cruises are an easy and enjoyable vacation option.

Choose from two main waterways for your U.S. river cruise: the Mississippi River — which flows through nine states from St. Paul, Minnesota, to New Orleans — or the Columbia and Snake rivers in Oregon and Washington. Some cruise lines also venture onto three smaller, lesser-known rivers: the Ohio, the Cumberland and the Tennessee. You can also explore New York's Hudson River on a fall foliage cruise.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Your choice of cruise line is equally limited. Just two companies offer multiple itineraries on U.S. rivers. American Cruise Line sails all the waterways mentioned above, while Viking offers itineraries solely on the Mississippi. Additionally, Lindblad Expeditions has introduced a food-and-wine-centric river cruise on the Columbia and Snake rivers.

Read on for our picks of the seven best U.S. river cruises. They range from seven to 15 nights and visit destinations in 16 states; itineraries take you through the colonial-heritage-rich Northeast, America's agricultural heartland and the pioneer routes of the Pacific Northwest.

American Cruise Lines' 8-night Music Cities Cruise

riverboat vacations

From Memphis blues and Elvis Presley's "Blue Suede Shoes" to Kentucky bluegrass and New Orleans jazz, American Cruise Lines' eight-night Music Cities Cruise sails you through a chronology of the U.S. music scene. You'll traverse three rivers (the Mississippi, Ohio and Cumberland) en route from Memphis to Nashville, or vice versa.

In Tennessee's two famous music cities, you'll have a chance to visit Elvis Presley's Graceland, stroll blues club-lined Beale Street and check out the Grand Ole Opry. We recently had an amazing experience tubing with River Dog Adventures on the Watauga River. The staff was incredibly friendly and professional, making the entire process smooth and enjoyable. Everything was well-organized, from the check-in to the point-to-point pickup and drop-off, so we could just relax and enjoy the river. The river itself was beautiful and serene, offering the perfect backdrop for a peaceful float. Keep in mind, the duration of your trip depends on the river's flow, so each adventure feels unique. Whether you're looking to unwind or enjoy a fun outing with friends, I highly recommend River Dog Adventures for a fantastic tubing experience!

We had a large group of 20 people for our tubing adventure. We had a great time and would definitely recommend River Dog Adventures. We had lots of fun, relaxing and laughs, especially when we had to drag each other over the low areas of the river! The small rapids areas were fun and added a little excitement to our tubing adventure!! We can't wait to bring more friends visiting us on future adventures!!

Thank you so much for the review. We are so happy you enjoyed yourself and our beautiful area. Look forward to seeing you again. The staff at River Dog Adventure

We had a nice time on our float. The owner and the guides were so friendly and hospitable and made the logistics easy for us. The only thing I would change is the length of time invovled. Based on the schedule we saw online, we were expecting about a 3.5 hour trip, but we put in around noon and were approaching the exit point by around 1:20. We made a point of stopping to eat lunch and wade around just so our experience didn't seem so cut short. They'll either need to move the exit point further down the river or change the estimated time online so people know what to expect. I hope they get it straightened out because I would like to see this business do well--mostly because I want to go back!

Vacation rentals among new offerings along Columbia River

In the heart of the summer, Crescent Bar comes to mind for many locals as the premier Central Washington playground for water sports, recreation and fun.

For those seeking a luxury home in the predictably sunny and warm Columbia River basin, Crescent Ridge is in its second season of new home development with sales fully underway.

Adding to its appeal as one of Central Washington’s only purpose-built luxury home communities, Crescent Ridge is partnering with Sagecliffe Resort & Spa to operate a new vacation rental program for Crescent Ridge homeowners.

Sagecliffe, a well-known resort neighboring The Gorge Amphitheatre, is a longtime purveyor of top-rated lodging, dining and spa experiences. The luxury hospitality brand will be exclusively operating homes at Crescent Ridge in The Vineyard neighborhood — giving homeowners the opportunity to capitalize on growing demand for high-quality rentals in one of Airbnb’s most-searched U.S. destinations. Summer concerts at the Gorge, regional wine tasting and Crescent Bar’s own recreation opportunities have created strong demand for high-end home rentals. This new program was designed to maximize the experience of vacationers looking for unique and memorable accommodations and outdoor adventures.

The homes at Crescent Ridge are ideally situated to maximize guest experiences and boost vacation rental opportunities in Central Washington. Featuring spacious single-level floor plans, sprawling lawns and expansive wraparound patios, homes at Crescent Ridge are oriented to take advantage of seamless indoor/outdoor living and conducive to hosting family and friends. Additional features include en suite bathrooms, expansive living and dining spaces with large kitchen islands, whole-house audio systems and oversized garages.

Guests staying at Crescent Ridge will be able to take full advantage of the resort-inspired community’s signature offerings. In addition to being a short walk to the Crescent Bar marina, two golf courses and the brand-new Beaumont Tasting Room + Bistro, residents and guests alike will enjoy access to Crescent Ridge’s new river view pool and spa, fitness center and pickleball courts.

Interested buyers have begun scheduling tours of the new vacation rental homes. Several are taking advantage of a new introductory rate associated with a Crescent Ridge Real Estate Preview experience, designed for those seriously considering the purchase of a new home at Crescent Ridge.

Whether seeking year-round adventure or retreat, Crescent Ridge is a one-of-a-kind ownership opportunity in Central Washington. Each property features single-level living, with particular attention placed on modern design features and optimal functionality. Homes are carefully sited to maximize panoramic views of the river and signature 500-foot basalt cliffs. Floor plans range from 2,000 to more than 2,800 square feet, with layout options that cater to each owner’s individual needs.

Garages feature 12-foot-tall doors to accommodate a variety of vehicles, boats, RVs, quads and plenty of gear. Plus, a mudroom which typically features dual sets of washers and dryers as well as an oversized pantry ensure these homes support an active indoor/outdoor lifestyle with ease.

A limited number of Columbia and Solera floor plans are complete and ready for move-ins this summer.

Contact Crescent Ridge to learn more about the new vacation rental program and partnership with Sagecliffe. Ask about special incentives available for move-in-ready homes, including a limited-time seller financing opportunity. Prices start at $1.7 million.

The new vacation program offers prospective buyers the opportunity to try before they consider ownership. Interested parties can contact Melissa Camp, Crescent Ridge’s sales director, for more information about the program and current availability of vacation rental homes for sale.

Crescent Ridge: Open houses take place Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To schedule a private tour, contact Melissa Camp at 509-398-8118. More information is available at CrescentRidgeResort.com .

10 Westchester, Rockland restaurants that make you feel like you're on vacation

Portrait of Jeanne Muchnick

Not going on vacation this summer? Or already went and but still craving that far away feeling? No worries. Westchester and Rockland have plenty of restaurants that offer a variety of international flavors so you can enjoy a taste of Madrid, Morrocco or Malaysia without travelling too far from home.

A sampling follows.

LEMAK Malaysian, Scarsdale

Immerse yourselves in the rich flavors of Malaysian cuisine thanks to this 19-seat eatery which opened in January. Diners can expect a combination of Indian, Thai, Chinese and Malaysian influences with dishes such as Roti Canai, pan-fried flatbread paired with creamy coconut chicken curry; Mee Goreng, a fiery stir-fried noodle dish loaded with vegetables, tofu, chicken and shrimp; Chicken Satay (grilled chicken on skewers with spiced peanut sauce); and Nasi Lemak, what the menu calls a "world-famous Malaysian delicacy" featuring coconut rice, aromatic herbs, sambal, hard-boiled egg and cucumber (*you can add chicken or beef).

Other must-try items include the Teh Tarik, a Malaysian tea made from evaporated milk topped with froth, Cendol, sweet shaved ice with coconut milk, fragrant pandan flour jelly and palm sugar; Nasi Goreng with shrimp paste, fish sauce, market vegetables, fried egg, shrimp and chicken and the always popular Pad Thai. just be warned: There's no liquor. 62 Garth Road, Scarsdale, 914-574-5280, lemakmalaysian.com .

Argana Restaurant & Bar, Port Chester

This seven-year-old husband-and-wife-owned gem not only features authentic Moroccan food but it practically transports you to Marrakesh with its dozens of handmade bronze hanging lamps, golden yellow walls, and colorfully draped Sultan tent. There's even hookah.

Moroccan-born Nordine Achbani and Mia Sedki Achbani (she's the chef; he works front of house) are all about welcoming guests and making them feel like they're in their home.

Tajine, a dish named after the earthenware pot it's cooked in, is a specialty and the shortrib tajine, cooked down into a stew-like consistency, with prunes, toasted almonds and sesame seeds, is always a winner. There's also a vegetarian and meatball version. Also popular: the Fromage Cigar (phyllo with goat cheese and fig); chicken and fries; Harissa shrimp and "Argana Flavors": a combo of hummus, falafel, harissa olives and grape leaves with pita bread. 325 N Main St., 914-612-4440, arganarestaurantbar.com .

Karenderya, Nyack

Casual vibes and a homey ambiance define this husband-and-wife-run Filipino eatery, one of Esquire's "best restaurants in America" in 2018. Diners can expect Filipino cuisine staples combined with modern interpretations of southeast Asian flavor profiles. Try the Lumpiang Shanghai (ground pork-filled fried mini eggrolls with spicy banana ketchup); the Daing na Bangus (boneless baby milkfish marinated in vinegar and garlic); shrimp coconut Adobo (with rice vinegar, coconut milk broth, yam and crispy shallots) or the pork ribs Sinigang, in a sour tamarind broth. 248 Main St., 845-875-7557, karenderyany.com .

Corner of Ukraine, Nyack

Ever had forshmak, a traditional dish from Odesa with herring, green apple, eggs, homemade aioli, and red onion)? Or what about green borsch (with eggs, rice, onion, carrots, heavy cream, sorrel, potato, and meat)? Traditional Ukrainian food, albeit with American touches thrown in (think salads and burgers), are the highlight of this 46-seat restaurant, which opened last December.

The woman-owned restaurant is not only unique with its offerings — when's the last time you saw herring with pickled red onion and fried baby potato? — but with its décor. Ivanka Dashko has decorated the space to showcase and educate diners about Ukrainian culture and food. That means lots of decorative folk-art and knickknacks along with colorful oversized murals both in the dining room and in each restroom. One highlights Taras Shevchenko, a Ukrainian poet, writer, and artist; the other is Lesya Ukrainka, one of the country's foremost writers.

All of the food is based on traditional recipes and cooked by Ukrainian chefs. There are also five kinds of pierogi stuffed with either potato, sauerkraut and mushrooms, farmer's cheese, and ground pork. 85 Main St., 845-814-3424, cornerofukraine.com .

Badageoni, Mount Kisco

Expect an innovative approach to centuries-old recipes at this brother-and-sister-owned Georgian restaurant where traditional stews like Chakapuli (slow-cooked lamb in white wine with tarragon, scallions, sour plums and herbs) and Shrmeruli (pan-fried Cornish hen in garlic cream sauce) are the star attractions. Just as fun to try: Kharcho (beef cooked in tomato and rice); Pkhali (spinach, beet and carrot patties mixed with spiced walnuts) and the restaurant's famous breads.

Other musts: the Adijaruli, a cheese boat with signature blended cheese and sunny side egg; Lobiani, round spiced mashed beans bread; and Imeruli, round cheese bread. The Georgian dumplings, paired with Georgian wine, are also winners. 26 E Main St., 914-864-1666, badageoni.com .

Mumbai Katta, Port Chester

A heartfelt tribute to Mumbai street food is the focus at this new fast casual spot featuring Ragada patties, chicken Kheema Pav, samosas, paneer Tikka Masala and butter chicken. Chef/Owner Anita Tibile-Gawade relies on her grandmother's recipes as inspiration for her 40-seat restaurant, which opened July 1. 227 Westchester Ave. 516-953-3265.

Basque Tapas, Piermont and Tarrytown

Dreaming of Spain? You have two options: Basque Tapas has locations in Piermont and Tarrytown that feature the same mouth-watering menus where the highlight is the paella. Their "Marisco" version, with clams, mussels, scallops, shrimp, baby squid, olives, tomato and onion sofrito, will transport you to Madrid while the "Mar y Tierra," a surf and turf option with certified Angus New York Strip, baby lobster tails, scallops, tomato and onion sofrito will happily satisfy the steak and seafood lovers in your group. The entire dish is a showstopper starting with its fragrant aroma and well-seasoned rice.

Paellas here are done the "old school" way with time, patience, and the chef starting the dish on the stovetop and then transitioning it to the oven. Other stand-outs include the Langostinos, four head-on prawns with pan-seared garlic, lemon, brandy and seasoning; the Burrata y Iberico, a burrata salad that's nestled alongside arugula, cherry tomatoes, Iberico ham, olive oil, balsamic glaze and the "Manchego Frito," fried Manchego cheese with drizzled honey and a balsamic glaze.

Top it off with sangria, available in rosé, cava, white and red or the restaurant's private label wine that's made specifically for them. There are also Spanish beers. 587 Piermont Ave., Piermont, 845-395-3100; 61 Main St., Tarrytown, 914-801-9200,  basquetapasbar.com .

Encore Bistro Francais, Larchmont

Bummed you weren't at the Paris Olympics? Join the club — but then indulge in Pâté Maison (country style pâté with cornichons); Moules Provençales ou au Curry (steamed mussels in white wine, capers, olives, tomatoes, onions and fresh herbs sauce) or Steak Frites. This classic bistro, with its cheery yellow walls and Art Nouveau posters, is just as authentic and cozy as it was when it opened 24 years ago thanks to Owner David Masliah who hails from Lyon. 22 Chatsworth Ave., 914-833- encore-bistro.com .

More: Transport yourself to the Paris Olympics at Lower Hudson Valley French restaurants

Saigon Table, Rye

The bicycle at the front of this restaurant (yes, you can sit on it!) is one way to transport you to Vietnam. The food is another. Saigon native Lynn Lee opened this new fast casual spot in May featuring two kiosks for ordering upon entry and a grab-and-go section on the right.

Among the items on the menu: Pho (with either sirloin, meatball or brisket); Vermicelli (with a choice of skewer, egg roll or both): Vietnamese beef stew; chicken soup (with glass or thin egg noodles); Banh Mi (with options of ham, pork, beef, chicken, shrimp or tofu); Summer Roll with shrimp; Tamarind Pork Ribs; Crispy Egg Rolls; Grilled Skewers with a variety of meat and tofu options and Pandan chiffon cake dessert flavored with the juices of Pandanus amaryllifolius leaves. 12 Purdy Ave., Rye, 914-821-1010,  saigontablerye.com .

More: Summer 2024 continues hot streak with the opening of 8 new Westchester eateries

The Gracie Rose, Pearl River

Fancy a cuppa tea with scones, finger sandwiches and housemade desserts? Let The Gracie Rose transport you to the Emerald Isle with its warm welcome and lilt of Irish voices. Their tea experience was a "Best Thing I Ate" last year and remains a favorite thanks to its traditional Irish menu with Fish 'n Chips, a cod burger, and sausage and chips. There's also a large gourmet section where you can purchase Irish grocery products and food gift baskets. 44 E Central Ave., 845-558-3400, thegracierose.com .

The Ambleside Pub, Mount Kisco

While this isn't a restaurant — it's a pub in the truest sense of the word — it IS a taste of England in the heart of Westchester. Owners Drew and Leigh Hodgson (he's British; she's American) have taken great pains to recreate what exists in nearly every corner of the British countryside right down to the bar height. Keeping it authentic for Drew, who grew up in the Lake District, meant creating a 3-foot 4-inch bar that's shorter than the average American bar to accommodate people standing (there are no stools). American bars, in case you're wondering, are generally 3 feet, 8 inches.

While the bar is among the standout features (there's also a dart board and a fake fireplace), it's the handpoured traditional cask ales — served warm! — that are the real stars of the show (and a point of deference). The pub even has its own keg room (in the center of the room) along with its own specialty brew. Ambleside's Best Bitter, a collaboration with  Old Glenham Brewery  in Beacon, another British-owned company. Food is not a priority but you will find Shepherd's Pie, Bangers and Mash, Fish and Chips and Cornish Pasties. Plus starting mid-September The Ambleside will serve a traditional Sunday roast with reservations strongly suggested (the only time they take reservations). 23 E Main St., 914-733-6008, theamblesidepub.com .
