Please contact us if you are interested in this event.

How much should I tip the boat captain/crew?

The crew will work hard to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable time on board. If you have enjoyed your charter we would suggest a 10% is customary.

How do I confirm a yacht charter?

To confirm a charter we will send you a charter agreement for signature and invoice for a deposit. The owner will counter-sign the charter agreement and then your charter will be confirmed

What else will I need to pay for?

In addition to the charter fee you will pay an Advanced Charter Allowance (ACA) from which the cost for all food and drink for the duration of the charter, fuel, marina and any other additional expenses will be deducted.

What happens once I have booked?

Once you have booked a cruising charter we will be in touch to gather your charter preferences including dietary preferences, meal times and itinerary. We will liaise with the chef to arrange a proposed menu for the charter and put you in touch with the crew via Whatsapp chat.

What are high and low season dates for Caribbean cruising charters

High Season includes the Christmas and New Year period (approx 28th December – 7th January) and 2 weeks around Easter

Can I charter a yacht for a corporate event?

Yes, we offer corporate yacht charters that are perfect for team-building exercises and other corporate functions.

What insurance will I need?

The yacht is fully insured but you will need your own personal insurance that covers yacht racing

Do I need an owners rep/boat captain and what role will they have?

Most of our yachts have to come with a boat captain / owner’s representative; this person isn’t there to be the skipper and they can fit into your team wherever you need. There knowledge of the boat can help you get the best performance from the boat and minimise avoidable damage.

Eating out as a crew?

If you decide to venture out as a group and wish to include the permanent crew, please remember that what is your holiday is their job. If you would like to show your appreciation for all their hard work in making your holiday a success by asking them to join you for a night out, then please be kind enough to pay for their expenses.

What is racing yacht charter?

Racing yacht charter is a unique opportunity that allows you to charter a race prepared yacht with your team and participate in regattas around the world. We can cater for race charter opportunites from a group of friends wanting a fun regatta in the sun to a professional team looking for silverwear.

Do I need sailing experience to participate in a racing yacht charter?

Sailing experience requirements varies according to yacht and regatta of choice. Some yachts like a Volvo 65 require more sailing experience than joining the team on a 40′ racer cruiser. When arranging your charter with you we discuss any pre-requisite experience with you.

What is the duration of a racing yacht charter?

For most racing charters your schedule will include 2 training days prior to the event start date, for offshore races a third day for boat preparation will also be included.

What additional costs should I expect?

In addition to the charter fee you may pay a security deposit and an Advanced Charter Allowance (ACA) to cover charter related costs including race entry, berthing and other charter related costs.

Can you arrange accommodation?

Yes, we offer a regatta concierge service which means that in addition to arranging your race entry and berthing we can also recommend and book accommodation ashore, flights, transfers and restaurant bookings as well as much more.* * 10% service charge applies for regatta concierge services

Once you have booked a charter we will be in touch to gather crew information in order to handle the race entry on your behalf. As the regatta date approaches we will connect you with the Boat Captain via Whatsapp chat and provide useful information on both the event and on the location. We are available at any time via phone or email to answer any other questions or queries you may have.

What is the security deposit for?

The security deposit is to cover damage to the yacht, that is more than just general wear and tear that would be expected when racing. In the worst case scenario it will cover the excess should there be the need for a claim on the yacht’s insurance. However, it is also there to cover less serious damage that does not warrant an insurance claim like damages to sails. If there is no damage then we will refund the security deposit in the week following the charter. If there are any damages the value of these damages will be assessed and the balance of the security deposit refunded after these costs have been deducted.

Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). Below Deck Sailing Yacht's Daisy Kelliher Debuts Drastic Change To Her Appearance

  • Below Deck Sailing Yacht's Daisy debuted a new haircut, signaling a "hot girl summer" ahead.
  • Fans anticipate season 5 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht and are hoping for premiere details unknown.
  • Relationship drama with Gary impacted Daisy on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, setting the stage for potential changes.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht star Daisy Kelliher debuted a drastic new change to her appearance , and many are wondering if it’s a sign of things to come. Daisy, who has been a part of Below Deck Sailing Yacht for seasons, has had a whirlwind year after the show took Bravo viewers by storm. After a tumultuous time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 , Daisy’s relationships shifted and her time aboard Parsifal III was uncertain. Choosing to continue working aboard the superyacht with both Gary King, especially after her relationship with Colin Macrae imploded, was a tough decision for Daisy.

"Hot girl summer coming in quick"

Showing off a short new haircut on her Instagram , Daisy posted a video of herself before and after the big chop. “Hot girl summer coming in quick,” Daisy shared, alongside a video of her shocking new ‘do.

The cut comes just before many fans believe the announcement for the premiere of Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, which is hopefully coming soon. Daisy, who works as the Parsifal III’s Chief Stewardess, reporting to Captain Glenn Shephard, will likely be facing even more major changes on the Below Deck spin-off when it returns in the ensuing summer months.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

When Will Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 Be Announced?

While it’s not certain when the highly anticipated Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 will be announced, judging by previous seasons, it’s likely the premiere date will be released soon. The past seasons of Below Deck Sailing Yacht have aired far earlier in the year, some as early as February, and some as late as April. Though the premiere dates have varied, the last season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht was finished by mid-June, making the current season somewhat unprecedented. Though Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5’s premiere date hasn’t been announced yet, the season was filmed during summer 2023 .

The upcoming season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht may be difficult for Bravo to figure out how to advertise , as issues with the show’s First Officer, Gary, have been increasingly difficult throughout the last year. After being accused of sexual misconduct by a makeup artist who was working on the series, many Below Deck viewers called for Gary’s removal from the series, as well as from Bravo events. Though he was originally announced as a guest at BravoCon 2023, Gary was removed from the list of attendees after fans spoke up about their displeasure with Gary’s attendance at the event.

Daisy Had A Difficult Time On Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 4

Below Deck Sailing Yacht has typically been a more low-key series, with the drama on the show surrounding charter guests and crew romances rather that more serious issues. During Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, however, there was some major drama surrounding Daisy, Collin, and Gary 's confusing relationship. While the trio had been friends for years after working aboard the same vessels and developing a close-knit relationship, Daisy and Colin took their close friendship to another level . After skirting around the idea of a relationship, the pair chose to dive in headfirst, despite concerns about the way others would react.

Below Deck's Gary King Reveals If He's Still 'Jealous' Of Daisy & Colin

Gary King is walking back his jealous comments towards long-standing BDSY crush, Daisy Kelliher, following her emerging connection with Colin Macrae.

Gary, who had always been a sideline supporter of Daisy and Colin separately, seemed to take issue with his two close friends getting into a romantic relationship. Trying to drive a wedge between them, Gary worked his most manipulative magic in order to move Daisy and Colin away from one another. Gary, who hadn't previously felt he had feelings for Daisy in a romantic sense, didn't seem to be able to handle the idea that she was with someone else. He appeared jealous, despite swearing he wasn't jealous at all, and worked against their relationship instead of supporting his friends.

Do Gary King's Actions His Removal From Below Deck?

While Gary was able to manipulate his way between Colin and Daisy, as the pair ended their relationship after Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, the other actions he took while aboard Parsifal III last charter season were even more unacceptable. Throughout his time as First Officer, G ary has shown a lack of respect for women , especially those that he works with aboard Parsifal III. Not only was he disrespectful to Daisy during his time aboard the yacht, but his relationship with the rest of the interior team, including Mads Herrera and Lucy Edmunds, wasn't in the realm of appropriate.

Gary's behavior has been difficult to watch after learning about the sexual misconduct allegations that former Below Deck makeup artist Samantha Suarez lodged against him in 2023. Watching back Gary's actions and realizing that his understanding of consent is somewhat different than the rest of the crew's , it's clear that he was operating under a very different system of beliefs than his colleagues. While it's a positive that Gary didn't cause any trouble to the rest of his crew during their time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, his behavior was too risky for him to return without consequence.

While Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 is hopefully shaping up to be one of the more interesting seasons of the spin-off series, some are wondering if it will ever actually be released. As Daisy debuts her new haircut, some are taking it as a sign that times are changing and the season will be announced, while others are simply enjoying the Chief Stew’s newest look. For many, the arrival of Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 will be a welcome excitement, as viewers have been waiting for the next installment of the series for nearly a calendar year.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht is available to stream on Peacock.

Orcas sink sailing yacht in Strait of Gibraltar

An unknown number of orcas have sunk a sailing yacht after ramming it in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain’s maritime rescue service said on Monday, a new attack in what has become a trend in the past four years.

The vessel Alboran Cognac, which measured 15 metres (49 feet) in length and carried two people, encountered the highly social apex predators, also known as killer whales, at 9 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) on Sunday, the service said.

The passengers reported feeling sudden blows to the hull and rudder before water started seeping into the ship. After alerting the rescue services, a nearby oil tanker took them onboard and transported them to Gibraltar.

The yacht was left adrift and eventually sank.

The incident is the latest example of  recurring orca rammings  around the Gibraltar Strait that separates Europe from Africa and off the Atlantic coast of Portugal and northwestern Spain.

Experts believe them to involve a subpopulation of about 15 individuals given the designation “Gladis.”

According to the research group GTOA, which tracks populations of the Iberian orca sub-species, there have been nearly 700 interactions since orca attacks on ships in the region were first reported in May 2020.

Researchers are unsure about the causes for the behaviour, with leading theories including it being a playful manifestation of the mammals’ curiosity, a social fad or the intentional targeting of what they perceive as competitors for their favourite prey, the local bluefin tuna.

Although known as killer whales, endangered orcas are part of the dolphin family. They can measure up to eight metres and weigh up to six tonnes as adults.

Need some rejuvenation? Hard to beat Wind Therapy on a Barnegat Bay sailboat

Seven-minute read.

sail yacht aragon

LACEY - Without a doubt, David Basile and Carrie Villanueva come from different worlds. He captains a charter sailboat as the owner of Jersey Coastal Adventures in the Forked River section of Lacey, and she’s an Ocean County-based licensed holistic massage therapist.

But they bonded over their joint passion — the healing power of being out on the water. And since teaming up to launch Wind Therapy Wellness Retreats in 2020, the two have been providing luxury wellness sails along Barnegat Bay designed to leave guests feeling relaxed, refreshed and rejuvenated.

“I came up with the idea in 2018,” recalled Basile, a Scotch Plains native, current Barnegat resident and former postmaster who got hooked on sailing in the 1980s and launched Jersey Coastal Adventures in 2007.

“Carrie posted the fact that she’d just become a licensed massage therapist on Instagram and I reached out to her about the possibility of offering that service on my sailboat. She probably thought I was crazy,” he laughed, “but we met for coffee to discuss the idea and I knew that she’d be a quality practitioner I could work with.”

Jersey Shore day cruises: Your guide to scenic adventures and delicious meals

For her part, “I always loved boating, was very active, and spent a lot of time at the beach and local creeks as a kid,” shared Villanueva, a native of the Bayville section of Berkeley and current Beachwood resident.

“But after being rocked by the loss of a number of family members in my adult years, the space of health and healing became a lifeboat for me and I needed to replenish myself,” she said.

She became licensed in massage in 2018 and the following year launched Beachwood-based mobile massage practice Live Whole Massage & Holistics LLC, which specializes in women’s massage sessions, retreats and workshops. “I’ve done a lot of research on the power of massage, aromatherapy, mindfulness and meditation and wanted to share it with as many people as possible,” Villanueva said.

Basile too wanted to share his passion with others.

“I used to own a sailboat called Northstar, but I sold it five years ago and bought my current 41-foot luxury cruising boat, which I named Wind Therapy,” Basile explained. “When you go out on the bay, shut the motor off and you’re sailing against the backdrop of the sunrise or sunset under full sails, you clear out all of the cobwebs, your troubles and anxieties fade, and you experience the serenity of the wind and waves.”

River Lady Cruises: How Toms River man really combines work with pleasure

According to Basile, “the boat has plenty of room for eight to 10 people in the cockpit — typically six passengers plus myself, Carrie and possibly one or two guest practitioners — and the deck up front is flat and offers ample space to stretch out and relax, which supports what we do.”

“I was running my charter excursions and business was great with all five-star reviews, but when the model of my current boat first came out a few years ago, it was rated best-in-class for cruising boats based on its stability and roominess and I thought that it would offer my guests more room to relax and lay out on the front on a towel or cushion,” Basile noted. “Then when I saw Carrie’s post on Instagram, I thought that maybe we could take this idea to the next level and make it happen together.”

“After he reached out, Dave and I met to discuss how this collaboration could work,” Villanueva said. “After checking out the boat to ensure that it was safe and comfortable, we went out on the water together in 2020 and I knew that this venture was meant to be.”

An opportunity to disconnect

Starting out in 2020 by offering excursions called Sip n’ Sail with help from a friend who was a certified yoga instructor, “we featured yoga and meditation on the deck of the boat and weren’t sure what the response would be,” said Villanueva. “But the pandemic left people craving the opportunity to be outside, and everything opened up for us that summer — we filled 16 to 20 sailing excursions immediately.

"Every single person was excited to be there and had a great experience, and many have since returned," she continued. "Business has been strong ever since and we thank our wonderful team member Jaime Zazzara for helping us to evolve and elevate our service offering from 2022 to 2024.”

With 2024 Wind Therapy Wellness sails starting this July 7 and running through the end of August (and possibly early September, weather permitting), “we’re among the best excursions along Barnegat Bay,” boasted Villanueva of their sessions, which include 3.5-hour sunrise cruises on Sundays ($170 per person), 4-hour sunset cruises on Thursday nights ($195 per person), and 5-hour sails on select Fridays ($325 per person); discounts are available to groups who fill the boat.

Life on the water: Popular radio DJ went from living on a boat to offering Jersey Shore boat rides

“Sails can include everything from yoga-style gentle movement, mediation and frequency therapy (sound bowls) to seated pampering of the shoulders, neck, scalp and hands, reflection and mindfulness activities, aromatherapy and energy healing,” Villanueva said.

“We provide yoga mats, blankets, bottled water and packaged granola bars, but guests are free to bring their own food and beverages,” Villanueva added. “Guests are a mix of men and women, couples, friends, family members and work colleagues from the entire tri-state area, and we also have groups coming on board for parties, girls’ get-togethers, team-building events and more. But everyone is generally looking for the same thing — a different experience that offers the opportunity to relax, disconnect from life’s stress and re-connect with the environment and/or others.”

Villanueva said that their wellness sails tap into a great need in modern society.

“Everyone is so busy today and our sails help bring them out of their daily grind and back into their body,” she said. “People crave the focus on mindfulness and breathwork, and the grounding aspect of being out on the water, hearing the lapping of the waves, feeling the vibrations from the singing bowls and experiencing aromatherapy all have amazing healing benefits for the mind, body and emotional state. Our sails offer much-welcomed freedom from being tethered to daily life and the stress that comes with it.”

“Carrie and our guest practitioners are so good at what they do, and people find the experience incredibly relaxing, so much so that many guests end up falling asleep from the sound of the singing bowls,” Basile said.

“And Dave does a fantastic job of educating guests about Barnegat Bay and keeping them entertained and involved as we sail,” Villanueva said. “We both want our guests to be happy and have a great time.”

Though Basile said that inclement weather is a challenge for all captains, he follows strict rules for excursions.

“If the weather looks like it won’t be safe or conducive to what we do, we’ll cancel and reschedule,” he said. “Clouds aren’t necessarily an issue, but high winds will make the bay very choppy, and we want guests to have the ultimate experience.”

What's new at the Jersey Shore? Here are 9 things you need to know for summer 2024

A form of healing

Looking ahead, “we hope people enjoy our unique sails and want to come back again,” Basile said. “And while we have 20 wellness sails planned this season — which are scheduled around the charter sails that I operate at 12 noon and 5 p.m. daily through Jersey Coastal Adventures — we hope to expand the number of dates available next year to 30 by adding more wellness sails at 7 a.m.”

“We hope that people have a really personal experience that empowers them to continue their path of relaxation and mindfulness and share the experience with their friends and family,” Villanueva said.

For Basile, the unforgettable experience he’s able to offer guests never gets old.

'Get away from everything': Get onto the water with A Canoe to You in Keyport

“Some people who come on our boat for the first time are apprehensive, but I love the expressions on their faces when they’re really relaxed and they tell us that they had the best experience they can remember and are so glad they found this,” Basile said. “So many of our guests come on the boat as strangers and leave as friends and it’s great to be able to be the catalyst for such a positive experience that they’ll never have anywhere else.”

Villanueva wholeheartedly agreed. “Stress in the body can lead to chronic disease and to be able to offer people even a few hours of relaxation and joy is a form of healing,” she said. “By helping people know what it feels like to be truly relaxed, we hope we can have a greater long-term impact and help people live a better quality of life overall.”

'Below Deck Sailing Yacht': Daisy and Colin Make Out as Yachties Bed-Hop — Find Out Who Made the First Move

Daisy Kelliher's former 'Below Deck Sailing Yacht' fling Gary King may have been on to something when he accused her of "spitefully hooking up" with Colin MacRae — but what did he say to rile her up?

Lanford Beard is the former Senior TV Editor at PEOPLE. She worked at the brand from 2015 through 2024.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht finally delivered on a years-in-the-making — not to mention surprisingly steamy — hookup between  Daisy Kelliher and Colin MacRae . But the pals–turned–paramours weren't the only yachties feeling frisky aboard Parsifal III on this week's episode.

Monday's episode began with business as usual as the crew members finished out their latest charter. Of course, Sailing Yacht 's cruising Casanova Gary King found time between his first mate duties to cozy up to stewardess Madison "Mads" Herrera and check in on the status on their relationship in the wake of two recent hookups.

Mads wasn't exactly eager to lock Gary down, which may have him especially punchy and attention-seeking leading into crew's night out. After the charter guests had disembarked, and the yachties had loaded into two vans — one full of all the women on board plus Gary, another occupied by the other guys on the crew — Gary stirred up a world of drama by telling the ladies what the men on crew thought of them.

"You want to know what we’re all saying, what the guys are saying?" Gary asked a bit too eagerly. "So what we're saying is, everyone loves Daisy to bits — but as much they'd love to f--- her, they are very scared of Daisy and don't want to get on her wrong side."

She laughed, quipping, "Yeah, but scary f---ing is fun f---ing" — but the remark, and its implication that Daisy was undesirable, had clearly gotten to her. (That's been the case with just about everything Gary had said or done this season, and their pair's fellow friends on the crew — Colin especially — haven't been shy in attributing their clashes to residual tension from Gary and Daisy's one-and-done hot tub fling last season.)

"I really wish Gary hadn't opened his f---ing mouth," Daisy said to her crewmates, including stewardess Lucy Edmunds, who said Gary had basically called her "a bloke," and Mads, who Lucy said Gary had "c---blocked" since their tryst. (Chef Ileisha Dell was unfazed by the candor since Gary's only feedback was that the guys wished she didn't have a boyfriend.)

Daisy declared, "Now I literally want to f--- you all, now that I know I'm unf---able."

Recognizing his misstep, Gary opened the door and jokingly jumped out of the van — while it was traveling down the middle an active highway. Getting back in, he clumsily backpedaled: "All the guys want to f--- Daisy, and I might have said that myself too."

Mads didn't sugarcoat it, telling him, "I feel like you made all the girls feel worse."

When the crew sat down for dinner, Colin learned that "f---in’ gossip" Gary had been shooting off at the mouth. Summing up Gary's gaffe later in a confessional, he said: "This is a direct violation of Bro Code Rule No. 1: Don't tell the girls what you said about them. Hello?! "

Not long after, tipsy deckhand Chase Lemacks declared, "Tonight's gonna be a night."

Colin didn't miss a beat: "It is already!"

Soon enough, the yachties piled back into the vans to head back to the boat. As they unloaded, Daisy got an up-close view of Gary laying the groundwork for his next hookup with Mads — and her annoyance did not go unnoticed.

Gary and Colin recapped the moment later in their bunk, with the chief engineer telling his playboy pal: "You know what? I know you don't even like Mads. She's the one that gave you two seconds of her time, and you're like, 'This is the one.'"

Perhaps revealing where his attention really lay, Gary responded, "I kissed Mads in the car, and Daisy looked at me as if I'd just cheated on her. But she told me to stay away from her this season. It's not a game for me. I'm f---ing sick and tired of games, bruh. Over it."

Despite Colin's doubts, Gary decided to pick back up with Mads — and that's when the night got truly wild.

After Gary and Mads had slipped off to one of the guest cabins, Colin and Chase were feeling a little mischievous and walked in on their hookup without knocking — killing the mood for Gary and angering Mads.

She stormed off to the cabin she shared with Daisy. And though the chief stewardess was all ready for bed, the disruption piqued her interest, so she and Colin went to check on Gary.

After they left him alone in the guest cabin, things took an unpredictably flirty turn as Colin asked, "Whose bed are we going to?"

They stopped halfway up the stairway between the guest rooms and the main salon. Daisy's arms were suddenly wrapped around Colin as she asked, "Are you trying to kiss me?"

The makeout may not have been expected, but it was certainly passionate — and extended.

After they finally pulled apart, Colin asked, "What the f---? Where did that come from?"

But unlike her hot tub smooch with Gary the year before, Daisy didn't reflexively snap out of it — quite the opposite, she followed Colin into his bunk, where Chase sensed an imminent hookup disrupting his beauty sleep and said, "F--- my life."

Daisy and Colin decided to take things back to her bunk, where they found Mads, but Colin quickly encouraged her to go find and "comfort" Gary in the guest cabin.

With Mads out of sight (though audibly enjoying her alone time with Gary), Colin and Daisy continued to canoodle in her bed as she told him, “You really turn me on.”

Flash to a black screen with the words: "To Be Continued..."

Next week's episode is sure to bring fallout, including this accusation from Gary to Daisy: "You know you like me deep down, and I feel you're hooking up to get back at me — spitefully hooking up ."

Loss of sailing cargo ship off Bahamas underscores the perils of the sea

Surviving crew members reported that they were hit by a sudden storm near the bahamas..

sail yacht aragon

Sea weather was fair more than a week after the 90-foot sailing schooner De Gallant departed Santa Marta, Colombia for Europe carrying a cargo of coffee, cocoa and cane sugar. But tragedy loomed on the horizon.

The crew of the De Gallant , part of a French company that ships products by sail to avoid burning fossil fuels, ran into a sudden and violent storm 20 miles north of Great Inagua, near the Bahamas. The vessel began taking on water. The crew of French sailors scrambled into yellow survival suits and into life rafts, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Two female crew members, however, were missing.

On Thursday, two days after rescuing six of eight crew members in rafts floating amid a field of the sunken ship’s debris, the Coast Guard said it had called off the search for the two women after scouring 3,700 square miles with planes, helicopters and ships.

“It is with heavy hearts we offer our sincere condolences to the families and crew that lost these two mariners,” said Coast Guard Cmdr. Lindsey Seniuk, who coordinated the search and rescue mission. “When we send our rescue crews out, it is with great hope we can bring people home safely, which is why suspending this case is one of the hardest decisions our personnel make. We are grateful we were able to bring home the six survivors and thankful for the assistance of our partners in the Royal Bahamas Defence Force.”

The Blue Schooner sail cargo company, which operated the vessel, did not release the names of any of the surviving crew or the missing women.

Since 2017, Blue Schooner has offered “a carbon-free solution to any producer or shipper concerned about their environmental footprint.” according to its website . Except for port maneuvers, the ship did not use fossil fuel, with on-board electricity provided by solar panels.

It’s among several companies , such as Shipped by Sail, that in recent years have adopted wind power, including on older ships, to transport products such as boutique coffees for sellers seeking to avoid the carbon emissions of typical cargo ships.

The De Gallant, a Vanuatu-flagged schooner, was a “well-proven vessel piloted by licensed professional sailors,” Blue Schooner said in a statement.

But the incident also highlighted the potential dangers that any ship can encounter at sea.

Blue Schooner noted that the weather had been fairly calm before the ship ran into trouble. A tracking map on the company’s website showed the vessel had previously traveled between Cuba and Haiti on its way north.

The Coast Guard said it first received distress notifications early Tuesday morning from personal locator beacons. About two hours later, around 8 a.m., a Coast Guard helicopter crew located two life rafts with the six French nationals and hoisted them to safety, said Petty Officer First Class Diana Sherbs, a Coast Guard spokeswoman in Miami.

They were taken to the Coast Guard Air Station in Miami and found in good health before being met by French diplomatic representatives and returned to France.

Blue Schooner officials had been hopeful that warm water temperatures and clear weather would help the missing crew survive and be found. But on Thursday the company said the lack of any signs during the search forced them to consider the “worst outcome.”

“It is an upheaval for the company, the maritime community and that of sailing transport in particular, which are losing sailors and above all exceptional humans,” the company said in a statement.

The exact circumstances of the sinking were still being examined.

“The first information we have indicates an unforeseen meteorological phenomenon, extremely sudden and violent when the ship was underway in mild conditions. This would have led to its capsizing and then its loss at a depth of more than 2,000 meters,” according to Blue Schooner.

Whether the incident will have any impact on sail cargo businesses is unclear.

The De Gallant’s owners called the incident “a reminder of the dangers of navigation and the seafaring profession.”
