PANAMA CITY — A few more details have been released about the St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club fire from early Sunday.

The Panama City Fire Department has confirmed that there was no one inside the building at the time of the fire.

The fire department arrived at the scene, 218 Bunkers Cove Road, about 3:50 a.m., which was five minutes after being dispatched.

According to the Panama City Fire Department Facebook page, Bay County Fire Rescue provided additional water supply with its tanker trucks and drop tanks to supplement water volume.

"As the fire continued to progress, fire personnel moved to the exterior of the building to knock down the fire," the post on the Panama City Fire Department's Facebook page says. "The fire hydrant located directly across the street was known by crews to be out of service."

Firefighters are continuing to monitor the building for hot spots. Residents are encouraged to call 911 if they see active fire within the structure.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the Florida State Fire Marshal is investigating. More information will be released as this investigation continues.

Fire Devastates St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club

An early Sunday fire devastated St. Andrew’s Bay Yacht Club, a popular northwest Florida institution.

Firefighters battled flames and adverse conditions as a fire started early on Sunday and quickly devastated St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club.

The main yacht club building, which the Panama City News Herald described as one of the most historic buildings in Bay County, burned to the ground. The fire started in the early hours of Sunday morning when nobody was in the building; there were no injuries.

Panama City fire authorities said a call came in at 3:44 A.M., and crews were on the scene before 4. According to the Panama City fire chief, firefighters’ efforts were hampered by the fact that nearby fire hydrants didn’t have enough water.

“We did have some water supply issues in the very initial phases of the fire, but we were able to overcome those by locating fire hydrants that were function able,” David Collier told news outlet WJHG..

A Panama City official said the city was aware of the problem.

“In certain areas we have fire hydrants that don’t function optimally and not to say there’s not water in them it’s just not at the volume,” Panama City assistant city manager Jared Jones told WJHG.

A message on the club’s Facebook page offered some optimism for the future.

“We have good insurance, and we’ve already filed a claim,” the post read. “The Board will be meeting this week to begin the rebuilding process as well as to find ways to keep the Club functioning in some form in the meantime.”

Bunkers Cove Road fire hydrant out of service at St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club

PANAMA CITY, Fla. ( WMBB ) — The St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club along with many other facilities has very old infrastructure.

The fire hydrant nearest to the yacht club is one of those examples.

When fire officials opened the valve on the corner of Bunkers Cove Road and Corto Street to connect their hoses, no water came out so they immediately called for backup.

Panama City Fire Department and Bay County Fire Rescue had to attach their hoses to a serviceable fire hydrant down the road.

To put out the fire, firefighters had to make several trips filling up their trucks from a secure water supply and dumping the water in a drop tank in certain areas.

“We have fire hydrants that that don’t function optimally. And not to say that there’s not water coming out of them, it’s just not the volume that that we need to put water on fire,” said Panama City Assistant Manager Jared Jones.

Jones says when the water mains were constructed, they were only 4 inches wide.

He says Panama City is planning on using grant money to make the water mains around the city a minimum of 8 inches wide.

St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club leaders looking towards the future after fire

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Just less than a week after a fire destroyed the St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club, its leaders are looking toward the future.

The club’s board held a meeting Thursday night to discuss options for what is next. Club Commodore Will Cramer told NewsChannel 7 that the meetings have always been open to club members, but that very few members would typically attend. But he said Thursday night, it was a full house.

Cramer said because the main building of the club was destroyed in the fire, a new building will have to be built. He said in the meantime, the club’s spirit is still alive among its members, and he hopes to start hosting events on location as soon as two weeks. He said board members are looking at different possibilities like bringing in food trucks and setting up tents in the parking lot.

Cramer added that while it is difficult to see the charred building, he knows the club will rebuild.

”Everybody wants it to succeed. Everybody wants to see it build back, to do things that we weren’t able to do before with this facility we had,” Cramer said. “So, we’ll wind up with a much better facility that suits the needs that we have for families that we didn’t necessarily have before.”

Cramer told NewsChannel 7 the process of getting insurance estimates has begun. There is still no word yet on the cause of the fire.

RealPage, which makes property management software, was sued Friday by the U.S. Justice Department and eight attorneys general for allegedly helping apartment and building managers around the country collude to drive up unit prices. It's the DOJ's first big algorithmic collusion case and comes as rent in the U.S. skyrockets, climbing 33% since March 2020, according to Zillow.
