Rent a boat in sweden.

With a coastline of 2400 km stretching from Strömstad in the west to Haparanda in the north, Sweden undoubtedly has a lot of places to go by boat! The country is bordered by the Skagerrak and Kattegat seas in the west and the Baltic Sea in the east.

If you're reading this text, you probably already have a fair idea of what Sweden has to offer when it comes to coastal destinations, but hopefully we can give you some new tips!

First and foremost we have the outstanding West Coast (also called the best coast by many, but everyone has their personal opinion on that matter). Cruise between the islands in the archipelago outside Gothenburg and experience the genuine island life with wooden cottages and cliffs. Classic destinations like Styrsö, Brännö and Köpstadsö are just a (long) stone's throw from Gothenburg's marinas.

And then there's the pearl of the west coast; the Bohuslän archipelago, a safe sailing distance away a little further north. With its salty baths, beautiful granite cliffs and many hours of sunshine, the Bohusk Coast is a destination that is hard to beat.

Even the Stockholm archipelago has a lot to offer with more than 30,000 islands and islets. With its large number of islands, the archipelago has something for everyone. You can find everything from lively bars and restaurants to peaceful natural islands.

So check out here what boats we have available in the metropolitan areas:

  • Hire a boat in Stockholm
  • Hire a boat in Gothenburg

Where can you sail in Sweden?

The east coast.

As I said, the east coast has a lot of variety, ranging from lush inner archipelago to barren outer archipelago. Such a varied nature makes the east coast and the Stockholm archipelago a natural mecca with a great diversity of species.

Fjäderholmarna is the perfect destination for a day trip or when you don't have much time as it's only a 20-30 minute boat ride from Stockholm's harbours. However, it's far enough away from Stockholm to get away from the city noise and enjoy the sun and swimming on the cliffs.

You should also not forget to t visit Fjäderholmarnas krog which in 2018 was named one of Sweden's best summer restaurants by White Guide.

Little further out in the archipelago, but still within easy sailing distance, lies the island of Grinda. The whole island is a nature reserve and there are many cosy beaches on the island where you can swim, sunbathe and enjoy the beautiful archipelago scenery.

The island is also perfect for hiking and one of the best trails is the Grinda Trail! In addition to nature, the island also offers a shop, kiosk, inn and farm shop.

Style Sandhamn is always a safe bet! The island's location just inside the sea makes sailors and boaters flock here from Stockholm's ports. The island is a paradise if you want to enjoy a genuine archipelago community with rugged cliffs and beautiful beaches.

The harbour is buzzing with life and there are plenty of taverns, restaurants and shops. But if you leave the harbour area, you'll soon find peaceful walks along white beaches and pine forests.

West Coast, Best Coast, Front page of Sweden.... A dear child has many names. It's not without reason that the West Coast is the Swedes' favourite holiday destination.

With its stunning scenery, salty sea baths, sun-drenched cliffs and fresh seafood, the West Coast is hard to beat. The West Coast also has a wide range of activities and attractions to offer: go fishing, go on a seal safari or visit a lovely spa, the choice is yours.

Strax north of Gothenburg you'll find the sailing town of Marstrand. With Sweden's largest guest harbour and the GKSS Match Cup Sweden, Marstrand is definitely considered the sailing mecca of Sweden.

Beyond that, Marstrand also offers a historic yet vibrant setting where you can stroll through small alleys and visit the spectacular fortress. In addition, Marstrand has stunning scenery and there are hiking trails where you can walk with a great view of the Western Sea.

Smögen is undoubtedly the most famous tourist destination on the Bohusk Coast! It is a genuine archipelago community where the atmosphere and unique buildings are well preserved. If you want to taste the seafood of the west coast, Smögen is also an ideal destination for that, as the country's second largest fish auction is located there!

This is where the fishing boats land their catch, which you can then pick up in the fish shops around the corner. For shopping, Smögenbryggan is also ideal as it's teeming with cafés and shops!

The Western Islands

The Western Isles is a destination for true nature lovers. Here you can moor in one of the peaceful bays to enjoy an evening swim and watch the sun set on the horizon. The nature and wildlife on and around the island is also fantastic and if you're lucky you might spot porpoises and seals.

For the more comfortable sailor there is also a guest harbour to moor in with associated facilities and if you are looking for something good to drink and eat the terrace of the Väderöarnas inn is recommended.

How much does it cost to rent a boat in Sweden?

How much it costs to rent a boat in Sweden depends entirely on the type of boat you want, the condition of the boat and the size of the boat. But generally speaking, you can expect to pay from 300€ per day and upwards for a sailing boat.

For a slightly larger motorboat that you can sleep in, prices usually start from 400€ per day and go up.

What type of boat should I hire

When you set off to sail between the cosy coastal communities of Sweden, it's a good idea to choose the right type of boat for your personal preferences:

If you want an authentic sailing experience and see the journey itself as the most important part of the experience, we advise you to rent a sailboat. This will give you the opportunity to cruise between the islands and hoist the sails yourself for an authentic experience. Or why not soak up the sun on the foredeck and take a dip!

Traveling on a stricter schedule but still want to hit as many destinations as possible? Then renting a motorboat or a ribbed boat is optimal! With a motorboat or rowboat you can cover long distances quickly and therefore reach many destinations in a short time!

About Sweeden

Why is Sweeden a good sailing destination?

When one thinks of Sweden, vast forests, aurora-lit skies, and a rich tapestry of history come to mind. Yet, its maritime treasures remain one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. With Yachting.Rent, we unveil why Sweden stands as a nautical paradise for sailors seeking an immersive experience.

Sweden’s extensive coastline is an intricate dance of land and sea, with over 30,000 islands shaping its East coast alone. From the Stockholm archipelago, a mesmerizing maze of islands offering secluded coves and pristine beaches, to the rugged beauty of the Bohuslän coast in the West, every stretch offers a unique sailing adventure. Coupled with the long summer days where the sun barely sets, sailors are treated to extended hours of exploration under a soft, golden light.

Beyond the coastline, Sweden’s inland presents a myriad of lakes and waterways, like Lake Vänern and Lake Mälaren, offering a different kind of sailing tranquility. Here, surrounded by dense forests and historic towns, the waters reflect the serene beauty of the Swedish landscape, providing a tranquil retreat from the vastness of the open sea.

But what truly sets Sweden apart is its harmonious blend of nature and culture. As you sail through its waters with Yachting.Rent, you’re not just navigating a route but journeying through time. Anchor near ancient Viking settlements, explore quaint fishing villages, or moor by vibrant cities like Stockholm or Gothenburg. Each stopover adds a new layer to the Swedish narrative.

In essence, Sweden offers a sailing odyssey that goes beyond just the thrill of the voyage. It promises a journey where each ripple tells tales of ancient seafarers, each gust carries the scent of dense forests, and each horizon beckons with the magic of the North. With Yachting.Rent, uncover the reasons why Sweden is not just a good, but a spectacular sailing destination.

Sweden, with its myriad islands and tranquil waters, offers a diverse sailing experience. At Yachting.Rent, we often encounter the pivotal question: In the heart of Scandinavia, should one opt for a sailing boat or a catamaran? Let’s navigate through the choices to find your perfect match.

A sailing boat in Sweden offers an authentic maritime experience. The slender design and deep hull of these boats are ideal for the varied depths of Swedish waters, from navigating the narrow channels between islands in the archipelagos to journeying into deeper Baltic sea territories. The traditional charm of a sailing boat, combined with its agility, provides an intimate connection to the water. It’s perfect for those who want to feel every pulse of the sea and weave effortlessly through Sweden’s maritime tapestry.

Conversely, the catamaran stands as a symbol of luxury and stability on Swedish waters. With its wide deck and expansive interiors, catamarans offer a level of comfort unparalleled by other vessels. The dual-hull design ensures smooth sailing, even in choppier waters, making it ideal for families or larger groups. Moreover, its shallow draft is perfect for anchoring in Sweden’s secluded bays or closer to the shores of its many islands. With panoramic views and ample space, catamarans provide an opulent Swedish sailing experience.

Yachting.Rent prides itself on matching sailors with their perfect vessel. Whether you’re seeking the romantic allure of a traditional sailing boat or the luxurious embrace of a catamaran, we ensure your Swedish sailing journey captures the essence of this remarkable destination. Together, let’s chart a course through Sweden’s waters, where every choice leads to unforgettable memories.

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

Sailing Levels

Winds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Good for beginner or intermediate sailors. Line-of-sight navigation but basic knowledge of charts and ability to plot your position required.

Sailing Holidays in Sweden

Sweden offers relaxed sailing on the east or west coast, both with islands of outstanding natural beauty.

"Just to say that if there is only one place in the world that you should charter make it the Stockholm Archipelago! The beauty and interest factor is stunning. Overall it's easy sailing, in most places like sailing on very large lakes. The closer you get to the open water of the Baltic, the quieter it became and nowhere did it ever seem crowded. Guest harbours all superb and natural harbours stunning. Every night the water became glass like and we had the quietest nights on board ever. A memorable and thoroughly enjoyable charter." P.M. 2015

Charter a yacht and explore the hundreds of offshore islands off the east coast of Sweden from Stockholm. These archipelagos form a necklace of islands with sheltered natural harbours and traditional fishing villages.

From the marina at Saltsjo-Duvnas you can sail into the Stockholm Archipelago, which stretches about 60km to the east. It consists of around 24,000 islands and islets, perfect to explore on a sailing holiday. Visit the larger islands of Möja, Runmarö and Nämdö and on the eastern edge of the archipelago is Sandhamn, the area’s most popular spot, with a picturesque marina, good restaurants and an excellent beach.

A sailing holiday allows you to visit quaint fishing villages, with cafes and restaurants serving fresh seafood. Explore islands with small fishing communities and islands which are completely deserted – one thing is certain, a yacht charter holiday in Sweden will be entirely unique.

Sweden Yacht Charter, Europe

Journey north on a Sweden luxury yacht charter and witness the Northern Lights or the Midnight Sun in awe-striking surroundings. This Nordic holiday destination is a recent magnet for explorer yachts, motor yachts and sailing yachts, who choose Sweden for its compelling history and natural beauty that is just as rich although starkly different to the lifestyle of the Mediterranean.

Sweden is bordered by Finland to the east and Norway to the west, and a Scandinavian holiday could easily involve more than one country to take in the region's most remarkable sights.

Malmo, Gothenburg and Stockholm are the main cities to visit for shopping, culture and an upbeat nightlife in a country famed for its Volvos, Vikings, snowbound wintry conditions, herring and meatballs. With the archipelagos surrounding Stockholm there are myriad private anchorages for sunbathing, swimming or holding an exclusive party.

The peninsulas are excellent for exploration by kayak, paddleboard of jet ski, and those on board hoping to fish for their supper will be delighted by the Baltic Sea inundated with cod, salmon and lobster. Scuba divers can head down to see these species swimming freely through the waters, all while visiting one wreck after another that sank more than a century ago.

Sweden offers a diverse set of yacht charter possibilities, and this makes this Nordic country an excellent and perfect base for seasoned sailors who want to visit the most important and popular sights and attractions in the region. Stockholm is a main maritime hub and provides convenient access to several attractions within the Baltic coast. In line with this, there has been an increase in large luxury yachts and superyachts - both private and available for charter - visiting Sweden and Northern Europe.

There are plenty of ways to spend a week in Sweden to make your holiday an experience that you will cherish for a lifetime. Contact CharterWorld to find out more about luxury yacht charter itineraries and vessel options for this incredible and relatively undiscovered destination.

Five quick reasons to visit Sweden:

Unforgettable natural phenomena (Midnight Sun, Aurora Borealis), Stunning waterfalls, Impressive forts and castles, Active outdoor lifestyle, Thriving flora and fauna

More about this part of Europe

Sweden is surrounded by the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia. With its close proximity to Norway a luxury yacht itinerary could easily include a visit to the mystical Norwegian Fjords, where the waterfalls are frozen solid over winter in a fantastic icy display.

Sample Belgium's delectable chocolates and stop by at Antwerp for its famous diamond district, or keep your eye out as you pass by the Dutch shipyards. To the east, you can cruise through the Baltic Sea and visit St. Petersburg, renowned for its art and cafe culture.

Sweden Yacht Charter Experiences

Your yacht charter holiday experience in Sweden is an eclectic mix of the old charm which pervades in several old towns and the cosmopolitan character of modern cities. An important destination for yacht charter holidaymakers is Gothenburg, which is the second biggest city of Sweden. It is famous for its diverse shopping opportunities, dining treats and sightseeing choices.

yacht rental sweden

The beautiful city of Gothenburg is styled with boulevards and broad canals that exude a magical and romantic vibe. An evening in Gothenburg can be spent sampling the local craft beers and wines at the bars and clubs along the waterfront, but during the day there are world-class museums to explore, including the Museum of Fine Art, Museum of Natural History, the Maritime Museum with an Aquarium and the Museum of World Culture. Take in the fresh air with a stroll through the Botanical Garden, and this modern city has a fantastic array of modern boutiques and shopping malls.

North of Malmo the bays have beautiful sandy beaches for games and water sports, and the nearby peninsula is the Kullenberg Nature Reserve which is a popular spot for Scuba divers because of the range of shallow and deep sites. Herring is often spotted along with cod, salmon and lobster and a basking shark might occasionally be sighted in the area as well.

In Malmo itself there are some excellent hidden bars and Michelin-starred restaurants to end a day of sunbathing on the local beaches or exploring the sights: Malmö Castle, Little Square, St. Peter's Church, Malmö Konsthall and Moderna Museet Malmö are close to the large local parks and are best explored by bike.

Skane at the southern tip of Sweden is referred to as the Swedish Riviera and the most popular area between Osterlen to Kristianstad is renowned for its long soft crescent beaches and clear waters. The bays make excellent anchorages on a stop along the coastline and wind conditions are ideal for windsurfers, kite surfers and sailing dinghys.

The picturesque and well-loved yacht charter holiday destinations in the charming Nordic country include the Stockholm archipelago and the Bohuslan region. Stockholm holds the enviable distinction of being the world’s largest archipelago. Ideal places to visit include premier tourist spots like Marstand and Nykoping , where you can immerse yourself in everyday life in a typical Swedish fishing village.

The capital city of Stockholm has enough to keep you in the city for days, to name but a few: The palace/museum 'Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde', the Vasa Museum which holds the well-preserved wreck of a 17th Century ship, the ABBA Museum and the Thielska Galleriet, which has an extensive collection that includes the paintings of Edvard Munch. The Old Town on the island of Gamla Stan is colourful, atmospheric and culturally rich with even more museums detailing medieval culture and royal life. The T-Centralen is also more than just a railways station – it’s an underground art exhibition and should be seen regardless of whether you intend to hop on a train.

There are walking tours of the city that tell of its captivating history and ghost stories, as well as tours taking you on tasting sessions for wine and craft beers. There are exceptional restaurants in Stockholm - including the three-starred Michelin restaurant Frantzén - for a sensational dining treat to make an anniversary or special occasion even more unforgettable.

When searching a geographical area on Borrow A Boat you can filter by the below boat types. There is also the option to further filter your searches by price, the number of guests, cabins or bathrooms, what year the boat or sailing yacht was launched, the boat length and the boat manufacturer.

Sailboat: From €120/£100/$135 a day up to whatever you can afford, monohull sailing yachts are fun to sail at all points of the wind and an affordable way to get around if your island hopping or finding your own secluded coves or sandy beaches along with longer cruises. Sizes range from those for a couple or small family to a full sized luxury charter yacht.

Catamaran: Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious, with quick sailing performance, and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the staterooms as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.

Power Catamaran: These types of boats are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced skipper.

Luxury Yacht: Luxury yacht charters are available for either a sailing yacht (sailboat), catamaran or motorboat and will have a crew and host/hostess on hand to cater for whatever your needs are along with a skipper who will have a detailed knowledge of your cruising area. On a crewed yacht charter of this kind you get to create your own personal itinerary and will have far greater range than on other boats which allows for lots of variety in how you travel and what you do.

Superyacht: A superyacht or sometimes called mega yacht are boats which are least 24 metres (79 feet) in length up to 180 metres (590 feet) and can either be sailing yachts (sailboats) or motorboats. These types of boats are most frequently found in the Med of Caribbean and due to their size they will have a large chartering area and can typically pick you up from whatever location you require rather than you being required to get to a set marina to start your charter. They are fully crewed with professional staff who will cater for your every need along with a skipper who will have extensive knowledge of your chosen cruising areas.

Motorboat: This covers a wide variety of boats from a motor yacht with cabins to a private boat trip for a fishing trip but all of the these are comfortable seagoing boats with a kick of speed should you want to cover a bigger distance on the day.

RIB: Very much day boats for fishing and day cruising, RIBs are a lot of fun for a day afloat. They can be very quick and are great should you be in a town on holiday and fancy seeing the coast or finding secluded sandy beaches to get away from it all.

Captained Yacht Charter or Bareboat

When it comes to boat rental or yacht charter in Sweden you typically have two choices - bareboat yacht rental or captained yacht charter.

When using Borrow A Boat you can filter all boat searches to be with or without a captain depending on what you are looking for and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your boat rental.

Captained Charter: A captained yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications before hand. For a monohull sailing yacht you will pay €120/£100/$135 plus a day extra for the captain, as well as their food and a tip at the end.

When you get to a luxury yacht or superyacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of boat rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases captains will also be the yacht or boat owners (typically day trips) which means they will know all the best secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a captain as well and prices will vary depending on the type of boat.

Bareboat Yacht Charter: For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the boat while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can captain these boats (typically up to 54 feet/16.5 metres in length) yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Yacht In Sweden

If you are on a gulet or captained yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht out of Sweden. This is also the case where you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the local islands or beaches.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of Sweden, these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat rental before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a captain then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

The land of the Vikings is renowned for its spectacular cruising grounds, dramatic scenery, and world-class cuisine, not to mention the awe-inspiring spectacle of the northern lights. For luxury yacht vacations, Scandinavia yacht charters offer a culturally rich alternative to the usual Mediterranean yacht charter destinations and should be on everyone’s yacht charter bucket list for 2024.

Comprising Norway , Sweden,  and Denmark , Scandinavia is a region commonly linked with rugged fishing villages and ancient tales of trolls and faeries, but for sheer raw beauty, impressive wildlife, and idyllic charm, this Northern Europe yacht charter destination is off the charts.

In this article:

From the breathtaking Norwegian fjords to the cultural delights of Copenhagen, here are our top picks of the best Scandinavian yacht charter hotspots for 2024.

Famous for its labyrinthine fjords and majestic snow-capped peaks, as well as charming colorful villages and rich cultural history, Norway yacht charters give charter guests access to arguably one of the loveliest yacht charter destinations on the planet.

A beautiful fjord in Norway

After you've had your fill of the Norweigan capital, head northwest towards the idyllic marina in Stavanger which can accommodate luxury yacht charters  up to 60m/197ft LOA. Stavanger yacht charter guests can enjoy the marina's conveniently close proximity to the town’s hub, renowned for its colorful wooden houses and a plethora of Michelin-starred restaurants, providing the perfect opportunity to dine ashore and sample some of the country’s finest seafood cuisine.

For gourmet dining at its best, Michelin-starred RE-NAA offers its patrons a unique tasting journey across 20 servings, while Michelin-starred Sabi Omakase is the perfect choice for sushi lovers and one that you’ll need to make reservations for.

Stavanger also boasts Norway's oldest cathedral, Stavanger Domkirke – located in the center of the city.

This charming town is the ideal jumping-off point to a number of celebrated destinations, including the Lysefjord - one of the most popular fjords in Norway and home to the vertiginous Pulpit Rock or ‘Preikestolen’. Here visitors can attempt the steep 4-hour climb to its mountain plateau, where astonishingly beautiful views over the fjord make you feel as if you're on top of the world.

For charter guests keen to experience the ways of the ancient Nordic farmers, head to the reconstructed Viking settlement at Avaldsnes, located just south of Haugesund for insight into how Norway’s ancestors lived.

The famous Pulpit Rock in Norway

Another good place to start your crewed yacht charter is further north in the quaint town of Bergen , the  gateway to many of Norway’s most famous fjords, including the Sognefjord – Norway’s longest and deepest fjord – and Hardangerfjord, where you’ll find the famous mountain plateau Trolltunga.

Colourful houses of Bergen in Norway

Bergen is Norway’s second largest city, with a homely village-feel characterised by cobblestone streets and colourful pointed roofs that are nestled among the steep mountains that surround the town.

It is also an eminently walkable city with most attractions, including numerous bars and restaurants, just a short stroll from the wharf.

  • Fløibanen funicular – a train ride to the top of Mount Fløyen with spectacular views
  • Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf – an iconic Unesco World Heritage site with colorful old wooden buildings that line Vågen harbor, where you’ll also find galleries, restaurants, and shops
  • Edvard Grieg villa - once home to Norway’s most famous composer, it now hosts an exhibition center and concert hall
  • Flåm Line – voted one of the world’s most beautiful train journeys, with round trips between Oslo and Bergen

A short cruise away is Norheimsund where you'll see the breathtaking Steinsdalsfossen waterfall as it cascades down the mountain. Kalrassen is another popular waterfall that can be found through the scenic passage of Lofthus via the beautiful Fykesund.

Beautiful Lofthus fjord in Norway

Lofthus is also where you'll find Hotel Ullensvang, which offers a private dining experience in its vaulted wine crypt, as well as heated indoor and outdoor pools for those who wish to take a postprandial dip.

Of course, if it's the northern lights you are after then set your course northwards. On the way, be sure to stop off at the picturesque coastal town of Molde in the Frænfjorden region, which dates back to the Middle Ages. We recommend dining at the popular waterfront restaurant Glass, where you’ll find mouthwatering dishes inspired by the Italian Riviera.

Storseisundet Bridge, Atlantic Ocean Road Norway

It's worth noting that Molde's pretty marina can accommodate boat charters up to a maximum length of 60m/197ft.

While you're in the vicinity, don’t miss a trip to the Troll Church or "Trollkirka" in Elnesvågen – a magical marble and limestone underground cave with rivers and a beautiful waterfall against a backdrop of majestic mountains.

Of course, a trip to Norway wouldn’t be complete without heading to the country’s northern peninsula and the Arctic capital of Tromsø, renowned for experiencing the shape-shifting spectacle of the northern lights in all its multi-colored glory against the night sky.

  • Cable car up Mount Storsteinen - for panoramic views of the city (if you’re feeling energetic you can take the 1,200 steps up the Sherpa path!)
  • Karasjok and Alta – experience the indigenous Sami culture
  • Varanger Peninsula – a bird watcher’s paradise
  • Kirkenes – renowned for king crab fishing and dog sledding, where you also can spend a night at an ice hotel

This area is also ideal for whale watching and epic nature adventures, with excellent conditions for ski touring and hiking in winter.

Mesmerising Northern lights in Tromso, Norway

In the areas surrounding Tromsø, several islands are well worth exploring, including Sommarøy, Lofoten, and Nordland – characterized by granite pinnacles that protrude from the sea, as well as stunning fjords, quaint fishing villages, and pristine beaches.

Famed for its vast archipelagos – where the island count sits comfortably in the tens of thousands – scenic anchorages and active outdoor lifestyle, this nordic country bordered by Finland to the east and Norway and Denmark to the west, is the perfect Scandinavian getaway for yacht charters.

Sun rise over a lake in Sweden

For west coast yacht charters incorporating Denmark, the cosmopolitan city of Gothenburg (Göteborg) is the perfect place to commence your Scandinavian charter, where the vibrancy of a city contrasts beautifully with an idyllic seaside charm.

Gothenburg offers a fantastic array of cultural activities, boutiques, and shopping malls, as well as a myriad excellent dining options and lively bars.

Overview of Goteborg

Take a stroll through the cobbled boulevards and along the canals, where you can sample local craft beers, or enjoy a cultural visit to one of the many world-class museums, covering subjects such as fine art, natural history, and maritime culture.

  • Risåsberget hill - a steep climb to the Skansen Kronan fortification is well worth it for the sweeping vistas alone
  • Cruise the beautiful Bohuslän archipelago – made up of over 8,000 islands, islets and skerries
  • Natur - a popular organic restaurant renowned for its seasonal produce and ingredients

Gothenburg is a popular base port for Sweden yacht charters , as it is only a short hop across the water to Denmark and approximately half a day's cruise to Norway's southern border.

For Sweden yacht charter itineraries  incorporating the beautiful coastlines of the region, head south where you’ll find the Skåne Province, often referred to as the Swedish Riviera, incorporating glorious medieval towns, diverse coastline, and numerous pale sand and pebble beaches, not to mention plenty of beautiful anchorages for motor and sailing yacht charters .

Medieval fortress in Old Town, Malmo in Sweden

Along the coast around to the southeast lies the Eriksberg Nature Reserve, a stone’s throw from Karlskrona, where the summer wildlife population is in abundance and can be spotted roaming among the high grasses, including red deer, wild boar, and bison.

Across the water, you’ll find the medieval city of Visby on the island of Gotland - Sweden’s answer to the Hamptons. This idyllic outpost was founded in 1203, and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and major JetSet summer vacation resort, offering an array of medieval architecture, vibrant bars and dining options, as well as beautiful beaches and spectacular scenery.

Plenty is going on during the summer months for everyone on a family yacht charter to get involved with, including the popular Medieval Week and the famous Stockholm Week festival with theatre, live music, crafts, and much more.

To the north, lies the vast Stockholm Archipelago which boasts the impressive accolade of being the largest archipelago in the world with a whopping 24,000 islands and islets peppering the seascape around Stockholm County, which has provided inspiration for poets and creative artists for centuries.

As you would expect, this area offers an abundance of tranquil cruising, where the silence is only broken by the occasional cry of a seabird or splash from one of the region’s resident seals.

Stately pine and birch forests grow in abundance among the larger islands, where you’ll likely catch glimpses of magnificent holiday homes and idyllic wooden cabin retreats.

From here, make a beeline for Stockholm, Sweden’s capital and largest city, set on its own archipelago of 14 islands, offering a cultural explosion of museums, galleries, and sculptures.

This metropolitan hub is also renowned as a foodie heaven with some of the world's best restaurants, including an impressive selection of Michelin-starred eateries to choose from.

  • Vasa museum - the famous final resting place of the 15th century warship Vasa
  • Blue Hall - located in Stockholm’s City Hall famous for hosting the Nobel Prize festivities
  • Thielska Galleriet - An art museum featuring an extensive collection including some of the finest paintings of the celebrated Swedish artist Edvard Munch
  • Fotografiska - A photography museum set in a large brick warehouse, which follows the same cultural theme as its global counterparts
  • Drottningholm Palace – a UNESCO World Heritage site, this royal castle was built in the 1600s and is now the permanent home to the King and Queen of Sweden and open to the public year round
  • Frantzén – located in a three-storey 19th-century townhouse in the Norrmalm district, this three-starred Michelin restaurant offers a 10-course ‘experience’ in the finest of Nordic cuisine with subtle Asian notes

The Swedish capital offers plenty of pretty anchorages to choose from, as well as a number of marinas to stop at providing easy access to explore this magnificent city.

Denmark yacht charters offer everything you could possibly want on a luxury yacht vacation, and for a relatively small country it packs a pretty mighty punch; with over 7,000 miles of diverse coastline, idyllic islands, charming multi-colored villages, and world-class gourmet cuisine. And that's not all, it also boasts beautiful national parks, countless medieval castles, and no less than seven UNESCO World Heritage sites for a cultural experience nonpareil.

A beautiful day overlooking the city of Copenhagen in Denmark

We recommend starting your journey on the Island of Zealand. Adjacent to Sweden and Norway, this historic Danish riviera is home to its lively capital of Copenhagen – arguably one of the best yacht charter bases in Scandinavia – offering a hip, relaxed vibe combined with extraordinary beauty and a rich cultural history.

The capital is in peak Hygge season in winter, where you’ll find an array of welcoming cosy eateries and cafes to stop at as you wander the glorious winding cobbled streets and marvel at their gingerbread-style houses that perfectly evoke a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale.

In summer, enjoy alfresco living at its best in one of their many bars, or simply take a stroll through the Botanical Garden set in the heart of the city.

The beautiful coloured buildings along the famous Nyehaven Wharf in Copenhagen, Denmark

There are numerous things to see and do in this culturally cool and stylish city, which also offers world-beating cuisine – with no less than 17 Michelin-starred restaurants to choose from – a vibrant festival scene and general laid-back approach to life.

  • Nyhavn waterfront - picturesque 17th century wharf with tall, brightly colored townhouses as well as bars, cafes and restaurants for gorgeous alfresco socialising
  • Tivoli Gardens - an amusement park that offers everything from hair-raising rides to unique architecture, historic buildings, and lush gardens
  • Little Mermaid - inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s most famous tale, this statue of a mermaid sitting on a rock is probably one of the most iconic images of Copenhagen
  • Sankt Peder's – Copenhagen’s oldest bakery in the Latin Quarter, renowned for their sticky cinnamon rolls

After you’ve had your fill of the Danish capital, we recommend a trip south to the beautiful Møns Klint –  a stretch of coastline over 7 kilometers long characterized by clear Caribbean-blue waters and 70 million-year-old chalk cliffs that rise nearly 130 meters above sea level.

Beautiful sea view from the cliff at Mons Klint, Denmark

This area is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and Scandinavia’s first Dark Sky Park where you can witness the majestic night sky in all its star-studded glory.

Afterward, head north towards the peninsular town of Helsingør, where you’ll find the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kronborg Castle. This is arguably one of Northern Europe’s finest Renaissance castles, which also happens to be world-famous as Hamlet’s castle in Shakespeare’s eponymous play.

If historic architecture is your thing, we recommend cruising down the Roskilde Fjord, past Frederikssund, which leads to another UNESCO site in the shape of the beautiful Roskilde Cathedral, featuring a glorious blue-domed ceiling and a veritable trove of medieval frescos.

While you’re here, don’t miss a chance to visit the Viking ship museum, which offers a unique synergy between its exhibition of ancient ships and Viking curios with an interactive element providing an exhilarating immersive experience into the culture of seafaring and boatbuilding in ancient and medieval times.

Across the water on Denmark's mainland territory lies the charming harbor town of Aarhus where you’ll find an array of fabulous museums, astonishing architecture, cafés, and boutique shopping, not to mention gorgeous pine forests and white sandy beaches.

ARoS Art Museum in Aarhus, Denmark with unique rainbow panorama at the top

  • Den Gamle By – Aarhus’s old town museum is a unique interactive attraction where visitors can quite literally walk through time. It was recently awarded the maximum three stars in the Michelin Travel Guide
  • Møllestien lane – an idyllic cobbled street with picturesque wooden houses in all the colors of the rainbow
  • ARoS Art Museum – one of the largest museums in Northern Europe, which also offers visitors a unique rainbow-coloured circular viewing platform at the top
  • Concert Hall Aarhus - the largest in Scandinavia, hosting a wide variety of artistic activities, and also home to the Danish National Opera

Aarhus has also been named the third most sustainable city in the world, and, as you might imagine, there are numerous cycling trails and green open spaces allowing you to explore the town from a different perspective.

For something truly unique, cruise to North Jutland, Denmark’s northernmost point – just across the water from Gothenburg. Here in this wild and remote outpost, charter guests can experience the desert-like dunes of Råbjerg Mile, the largest shifting sand dune in Northern Europe, with areas rising almost 40m above sea level.

Renowned for its white sand beaches and vast forests, North Jutland is also home to an array of imposing lighthouses, national parks and magnificent nature, and the perfect way to round off your Scandinavian adventure.
