Bayesian crew boozing to deal with yacht sinking tragedy at four-star sicily hotel: source.

The crew members who survived the sinking of the Bayesian yacht off Sicily have been staying at a seaside hotel — and running up a hefty bar tab while trying to process the tragedy, according to a local report.

Nine boat staff survived the ordeal in which the $40 million superyacht belonging to British tech tycoon Mike Lynch sank in minutes during a freak storm.

“The survivors, young guys, were having parties,” local site Dillinger News reported in Italian, citing a hotel worker. “Even spending — said our source — 2,500 euros [$2,770 USD] a day just for drinking.”

The crew have been staying at the four-star  Domina Zagarella Hotel  in the town of Santa Flavia in the Palermo city district, while Italian investigators figure out what happened.

A hotel staffer confirmed to The Post the crew had been staying at the hotel, but declined to comment further. It’s not clear from the report which members of the crew were alleged to have been hitting the bar.

The crew members have been handled by the Protezione Civile , an Italian disaster relief agency, since the tragedy and have given statements to authorities.

Three members of the crew, Captain James Cutfield, ship engineer Tim Parker Eaton and sailor Matthew Griffith, have been announced as under investigation. Italian authorities have made clear the move is a procedural step and does not imply wrongdoing.

Authorities named the rest of the crew as: Tijs Koopmans, chief officer, from the Netherlands; Htun Myint Kyaw, boatswain, from Burma; Sasha Murray, 29, chief stewardess, from Ireland; Katja Chichen, junior hostess, from Germany; Leah Randall, third stewardess on board, from South Africa; and Leo Eppel, a 19-year-old sailor from either Spain or South Africa.

Italian prosecutors are investigating Cutfield, 51, over possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges after the yacht sank on Aug. 19.

Cutfield, a New Zealand national, underwent his third round of questioning on Tuesday, according to his lawyer.

Prosecutors questioned him about whether the tender door — separating the tender room from the engine room — had been opened; the position of the movable centerboard, and the exact timing of the events that transpired, according to reports from the courtroom.

Cutfield declined to answer prosecutors’ questions.

“The captain exercised his right to remain silent for two fundamental reasons,” one of Cutfield’s lawyers, Giovanni Rizzuti, told the media after the hearing

“First, he’s very worn out. Second, we were appointed only on Monday and for a thorough and correct defense case, we need to acquire a set of data that at the moment, we don’t have.”

Parker Eaton, who is British, was in charge of the engine room at the time of the sinking, which includes securing the room and operational systems.

Griffith, believed to hold dual British and French nationality, is said to have been on watch at the time of the sinking, according to the BBC . Neither has appeared in court yet.

Prosecutors have already said the investigation will take some time given that the wreck still needs to be salvaged from the sea.

The company that owns the Bayesian, Revtom, could not be reached by The Post for comment on this story.

The sinking has baffled naval marine experts who say the boat, built by Italian high-end yacht manufacturer Perini, should have been able to withstand the storm.

Prosecutors said the event was “extremely rapid” and could have been a “downburst” — a localized, powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm and spreads out rapidly upon hitting the ground.

“I absolutely think it was a downburst, or what we also call a microburst,” Peter Lake, a veteran sailboat racing champion from Marblehead, Mass., told The Post.

“It’s one of the most powerful meteorological forces and I think this boat was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Italians are trying to find out if the crew was negligent in not taking precautions.

“But either way, what happened to Mike Lynch and the others trapped in the cabins was truly nightmarish. Water pours in at an extraordinary rate and there was nothing they could do to get out.”

The sailboat had been carrying  22 passengers and crew  when it went down.

Those on board were there to help Lynch celebrate his recent acquittal in a major US fraud trial. 

The body of the on-ship chef, Ricardo Thomas, was discovered shortly after the Bayesian sank.

The others who died after getting trapped in the hull included Lynch, his daughter, Manhattan attorney Christopher Morvillo and his wife, Neda, and Morgan Stanley exec Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy.

The captain of the superyacht that sank off the coast of Italy has been questioned by prosecutors investigating the deaths of seven passengers.

The British-flagged superyacht sank in the early hours of last Monday after being struck by a tornado - and led to a five-day search for those missing.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, 59, and his daughter Hannah, 18, were among the seven who died.

The others included Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy, American lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda, and the yacht's on-board chef Recaldo Thomas.

Captain James Cutfield and 14 others managed to escape to safety as the yacht sank while at anchor off the coast of Porticello, Sicily.

The captain, 51, and originally from New Zealand, is under investigation for possible multiple manslaughter and shipwreck charges.

In Italian law a case at this stage means authorities will be question the captain and assess evidence before deciding whether or not he should face prosecution.

It may mean he is forbidden from leaving the country, although no such order has been issued yet.

Magistrates spoke to Mr Cutfield on Sunday for the second time in a week, questioning him for more than two hours.

Local media reports suggest prosecutors may also investigate a crew member who was on duty when the storm hit and survived the incident.

Post-mortems will start tomorrow.

It comes after prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said "behaviours that were not perfectly in order" may have been behind the number of deaths at a news conference on Saturday.

He said investigators would focus on "the extent all the people [on board] were warned" of safety procedures.

Responsibility could lie with "all members of the crew... the manufacturers... [or those who were] not surveying or supervising the ship".

But all lines of inquiry were being considered, including the role of the extreme weather that struck the area, he added.

Mr Cutfield and his eight surviving crew members have made no public comment yet on the disaster.

The chief executive of the firm which makes and sells yachts like the Bayesian told Sky News last week that vessels like Mr Lynch's are "unsinkable".

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, said there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized.

The captain of a superyacht that sank during a storm off Sicily last week , killing seven people, decided not to respond to prosecutors’ questions on Tuesday, his lawyer said.

James Cutfield, a 51-year-old New Zealand national, is under investigation for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges and was questioned for the third time by the Termini Imerese prosecutors on Tuesday.

“He just exercised his right to remain silent, probably prosecutors were expecting that,” lawyer Aldo Mordiglia told The Associated Press, adding that the captain’s legal team has just been named and needs time to work on his defensive strategy.

New York City attorney Christopher Morvillo and his wife, jewelry designer Neda Morvillo, died in a luxury yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily earlier this week, his law firm confirmed to PEOPLE. He was 59. She was 57.

The couple had been among six passengers who were missing after the Bayesian went down in the water early on Monday, Aug. 19, following a storm.

The final body from the  luxury yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily was found, Italian coast guard sources told PEOPLE on Friday, Aug. 23. The discovery comes after four bodies  were recovered  on Wednesday, Aug, 21, while a  fifth body was found  in the wreckage.

“We are deeply saddened and still coming to terms with this terrible loss,” says a spokesperson for the Clifford Chance law firm, where Morvillo worked, in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. “Our utmost priority is to continue to support Chris's family at this very distressing time. Our thoughts extend to the families and loved ones of all those affected.” 

The spokesperson adds, “We wish to express our deepest condolences and our love and support to Chris’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. We also want to thank the Italian authorities and rescue teams for everything they have done."

Christopher and Neda were aboard the Bayesian , a 183-foot vessel that sank around 5 a.m. local time on Monday after "violent" weather while off the coast of Porticello, the coast guard said in a statement previously obtained by PEOPLE.

At the time of the disaster the yacht was carrying 22 people. Immediately after it sunk, 15 people were rescued and 1 body was recovered — later  identified  as chef Recaldo Thomas.

While the Italian authorities have not formally identified the six recovered bodies, an Italian interior ministry official confirmed that British tech entrepreneur  Mike Lynch was one of the bodies found,  reported Reuters . His  daughter Hannah remained missing  at the time.

Christopher represented Lynch in a lengthy legal saga that dated back to the 2011 sale of Autonomy, a business software company Lynch founded, to Hewlett Packard.

Lynch was acquitted in the U.S. in June on 15 fraud and conspiracy charges, according to the Associated Press and the BBC .

Following the verdict, Christopher thanked the legal team for their help on LinkedIn . He noted that he was “so glad to be home” and ended his post with, “And they all lived happily ever after….”

Christopher and Neda then joined Lynch on the yacht "celebrating Lynch's acquittal,” a source told PEOPLE.

Christopher was a partner at the law firm Clifford Chance.Prior to that, his extensive experience included serving as a lead federal prosecutor who worked on the criminal investigation of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Throughout his career, he specialized in healthcare fraud, insurance fraud, money laundering, obstruction of justice, counter-terrorism and narcotics.

“He was a genial and disarming guy,” said Preet Bharara, who worked alongside Morvillo and later became U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, according to The Wall Street Journal . “He got as good results in his cases as people who present as hard hitting, scorched-earth lawyers.”

Christopher came from a family of lawyers and credited his late father, Robert Morvillo, for teaching him in the field. “He was the best mentor I’ve ever had,” he told American Lawyer in 2018.

“I learned more during those years than at any other point in my career, largely from just watching my father skillfully navigate clients through some of the most complex challenges that this job can throw at you,” he said he said at the time.

Neda was a jewelry designer in New York City and listed her company under the name Neda Nassiri . According to her site, she trained with master goldsmith Cecelia Bauer and had been designing and hand-crafting fine jewelry for over 20 years. 

The couple is survived by their two adult daughters, Sabrina and Sophia Morvillo.
