Review of Ylva

Basic specs..

Both the hull and the deck is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all. The deck is a double deck which improves the indoor climate.

The interior is like many other boats made of mahogany. Mahogany belongs to the hardwood species, known for being water-repellent and resistant to decay. It has an attractive wood grain and holds wood polish and varnish well. The boat is equipped with 4 berths, a galley, 45.0 liter fresh water capacity and toilet facility. Note: the boat has also been sold to be self-made/-interiored, which means that the quality of each boat may vary.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

The Ylva is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

Ylva can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.65 - 1.75 meter (5.41 - 5.71 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard engine at 7 hp (5 kW). The speed is 7.0 knots.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Ylva is 1.51, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.1 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Ylva is about 129 kg/cm, alternatively 727 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 129 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 727 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 25m 2 (269 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

There's a sailboat in Sweden called an RJ 85 (see RJ 85 sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com ). Has anyone here ever seen one, sailed on one, or had a beer with someone who has? They seem to be a home-built (using professional moulds controlled by some sort of boat-builders' association), sort of like a slightly longer, faster, narrower IF-boat. Prices in Sweden vary wildly (presumably because they were all self-built), from 9000SEK to 50000+SEK. Certainly a home-built model is a huge warning sign for careful inspection and quality control before thinking about buying one, but does anyone want to weigh in with thoughts on the design? There's a guy with a bunch of videos on youtube that gets 7+kts in pretty normal wind, which seems pretty good for a boat with a 6.7m water line.

From the specs: LOA: 28.05' / 8.55m LWL: 21.98' / 6.70m Beam: 6.73' / 2.05m Listed SA: 222 ft2 / 20.62 m2 Draft 4.13' / 1.26m Displ: 4740 lbs./ 2150 kgs. Ballast: 2778 lbs. / 1260 kgs. SA/D 12.62 B/D: 58.60% D/L: 199.27 A very narrow boat so probably little space below, with a B/D of nearly 60% very stiff, the the SA/D of 12.62 does not indicate much sailpower. There was a Scandinavian line of larger boats in the '80s that were of similar proportions, a Canadian John Hughes took one around the world in the '87 BOC - "Joseph Young" a 42 footer with very narrow beam - there was also one in BC some years back (I've forgotten the brand/model).

Maybe an Ylva? YLVA Galleri RJ-85 are narrow low boats, but do not sail as well as their cousins like the BB-10 and other similiar narrow boats of the time. In general these types goes to windward well, but they are wet to sail ... really wet :smile

Hmm, fair enough. I was expecting that they would be wet as hellfire (is that a valid comparison? I'm not sure ...), but probably fun to sail. I went to look at this one over the weekend: https://www.blocket.se/halland/Rj_85_75419168.htm?sa=1 (it looks WAY better in the pictures than it did in person). It was mostly for interest's sake, since I don't need a project quite that big right now. There seem to be a lot of low, classic-looking boat around in Scandinavia, and fewer of the big, wide-cockpit, cocktail production boats.
