St Brendan
Price REDUCED!!!
Historic Moment: St Brendan arriving at Annapolis

Matt Rutherford writes:

It breaks my heart to put this boat up for sale.  We have been through so many hard times together and also so many good times.  St Brendan always kept sailing regardless of the giant waves of the Bering Sea and Cape Horn, the fog and ice of the Northwest Passage, the freighters that nearly ran us down at night.  St Brendan sailed for 309 days straight and covered 27,077 miles yet still has a lot of life left in her.  I don’t want to sell the boat but since my return I have started a non-profit called Ocean Research Project and have just completed an 80 day 6,800 miles survey of the North Atlantic.  We were dragging special nets that can determine the amount of micro plastic in the water ( )

I’ve put every dollar I have into the non-profit and no longer can afford to keep St Brendan.

On one hand St Brendan has been through hell and back and needs some TLC on the other hand St Brendan is a piece of history.  She is the first boat ever to have sailed around North and South America non-stop singlehanded.  The documentary about this trip will be out in a few months and the book will follow few months after.  (Trailer for documentary ) St Brendan’s value will only increase over time. The sails and rigging are in surprising good shape.  She was repowered with a Volvo Penta 2002 that runs fine (I fixed the starter when I got back).  Her hull number is 1147 She is located in Annapolis MD

If I could I would keep this boat forever but I am flat broke.  St Brendan deserves a good home and she deserves to keep sailing.

Silentium Was the classic “Barn Find”. The original owner Vernier and his wife Pearl sailed Silentium on Lake Ontario from 1974 through 1982. The boat was sailed mostly weekends from Late May until October, and hauled out and stored each winter. In 1983 the Vernier retired and he and Pearl trailered Silentium to Victoria, British Columbia with dreams of sailing the fabled Pacific North West.

Tragedy struck , and Vernier became ill and Silentium was never launched. The boat was put into Storage yard on Vanalman Rd, in Saanich and it sat for 28 years until I purchased the boat from Pearl in 2011.

The boat was in amazing condition. The old keyhole style orange canvas life jackets looked brand new with no sign of mildew. The boat was dry and sound. Pearl had even paid the yard manager to give the propeller a turn or two once a month to keep the engine from seizing.

Of course it had the typical problems of the Vegas. The old haul liner was falling off, the wood work dried out, and the old gate valves needing replacement. So I brought the boat home, put Silentium into the back yard, stripped her down and stent the next two years rebuilding her.

That included:

Bainbridge Island Vega #712
SOLD

All cushions and wood are in good shape and I have yet to discover any leaks. The original diesel has been long removed and thus she comes with a 8 hp Yamaha outboard that purrs like kitten. I recently had the hull cleaned less than 1 month ago.

She'll probably need a coat of paint in the next year but otherwise ready to sail.

I have been living on board for the last month while moored in Winslow Wharf Marina (possible slip transfer) -- So I can account for all working electrical...

I am a motivated seller so please contact me either by replying to this post or call the number below.

Vega #3175 "Gala"

See pictures attached.

The boat is fixable but I do not have the skills and the cost of hiring professionals makes this a do-it-yourself project.

It was in decent shape before the accident. It does not have an engine. The trailer is shot.

The boat is at a yard near Beaufort SC. It should be a good project for anyone with the necessary skills and a way to move it.

Any reasonable offer will be accepted and any unreasonable offers will be seriously considered.

I have owned the boat for ten years.  A previous owner had outfitted the boat for cruising.  A standard joke when I take friends sailing is that something will need repair  and I will rummage around in a lazarette or a locker below and appear with a replacement part.  When asked where I got it the answer is invariably "It came with the boat!"

Sale of the boat will include everything that comes on the boat.  It is a garage full of equipment.  In fact my advice is to do what I did.  Empty the boat and then re-stow and label the location of every imaginable piece of equipment or replacement part.  I truly believe you could literally provision with food and water and embark on a cruise!

I'm mellowing with age and like time share vacations! I can get my sailing fix by chartering anywhere in the world!

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

From BlueWaterBoats.org :

There’s more to the modest-seeming Albin Vega than meets the eye. This little fiberglass 27 footer from Scandinavia can strut her stuff as a serious offshore cruiser and has become a multi-continental favourite with an army of fans. Created in 1964 by Swedish designer Per Brohall, builders Larsson Marine were looking for a bigger version of Brohall’s successful Viggen 23. Designed to be inexpensive but also light, spacious, fast and seaworthy, the Albin Vega’s popularity is a result of Brohall’s success in meeting his brief.

Like many boats of the time the Vega’s design gives a nod to the skinny lines and long keel of the Scandinavian Folkboat and in comparison with modern designs the term spacious might be misleading but unlike modern boats there was no trade off in seaworthiness for interior space. The Albin Vega is no longer in production, but during her ten year production run over 3000 boats were built. She has earned the reputation as an inexpensive all weather cruiser and an ideal starter boat.

In 1964 Lars Larsson, of Larsson Trade AB (in 1971 to become Albin Marin AB), commissioned Swedish designer Per Brohall to build a 27 foot version of his previous successful design, the Viggen 23, reputedly in the hope of increasing sales of their Albin engines. Brohall was one of the pioneers of early fibreglass construction in Sweden and published a number of books on small wooden boat building. He paired up with Larsson to design several boats, including the Albin 25, 21 and 30, but the Albin Vega was probably the most popular and widely known. Larsson Trade AB managed to produce 3450 Vegas at their impressive shipyard in Kristinehamn, Sweden before production ceased in 1979 and the shipyard closed down. Many of the Vegas unsurprisingly were sold in Scandinavia but a good proportion were shipped out to the rest of Europe and places as far away as the USA, Greenland and Hawaii.

Notable Voyages

The Vega has earned her reputation as an offshore cruiser by completing numerous offshore voyages and circumnavigations, the most famous being the voyage of John Neal whose book  Log of Mahina  chronicled his voyage from Seattle to the South Pacific.

More recently were voyages to Antartica and the Arctic made by controversial Norwegian Adventurer Jarle Andhoy and his crew in Berserk (and later  Berserk II ). These expeditions were filmed for Norwegian TV. According to their account of their Arctic voyage, they set a world record “as no other sailing vessel had ever sailed as far north in open water”.

In 2012, Matt Rutherford completed his solo, nonstop circumnavigation of the Americas via the Arctic’s Northwest Passage and South America’s Cape Horn. His 309 day voyage earned Matt two Guinness World records and has been captured in a documentary film called Red Dot on the Ocean .

Configuration and Layout

The Vega is a modest displacement masthead sloop with a cutaway stern and inboard rudder. She’s a bit lacking in classic cruiser curves with an almost straight sheerline from bow to stern which gives her a slightly hunchbacked appearance from certain angles. Her keel is not the traditional full keel of an offshore cruiser but, modified to half the length of her waterline, it’s enough to keep her tracking well while creating less friction and giving better light air performance. Her rudder is firmly fixed to the rear of the keel and uncommonly, the propeller exits under the counter stern above the rudder. She has an unusual bow pulpit configuration which allows for step through disembarking and is typical for Swedish boats which often have to be moored bow forward off rugged coastlines.

Her interior layout is fairly standard for a boat this size with, from bow to stern, chain locker, v-berth, head, single berths either side of the saloon and a galley split either side of the companionway stairway. With her 8ft beam there is not a lot of space to work with below but she can carry two adults comfortably on long voyages plus perhaps two children on shorter trips. The four berths are a decent size (6′ and 6′ 6″) and the table in the saloon screws in and can be unscrewed and relocated to the cockpit. There is no designated chart table so improvisation is required here. Headroom is not over generous with 5′ 10″ in the main cabin. The cockpit is considered to be the right size for offshore work and has good drainage and tall coamings for protection. One owner points to its use as an enjoyable cockpit bath with the drains plugged.

Construction

Built in the early days of fibreglass construction, the Vega’s hull is solidly constructed fibreglass up to one inch thick in parts, however the cabin top and deck are cored fibreglass which, while not necessarily weak, is prone to flexing and could do with reinforcement to withstand lengthy offshore work. The joints are strong and waterproof  with good sized stainless steel bolts, spaced 5 inches apart, holding hull and deck together.

By all accounts the Vega under sail handles easily and is a well balanced creature with no weather helm. Despite her shallow draft she is reported to point well to windward and while tender initially up to around 10 to 15 degrees of heel she carries full sail easily up to 20 knots. She’s a fast boat downwind but offshore cruisers would do well to carry a large spinnaker or drifter for light airs.

Buyer’s Notes

While the rudder is well supported by its attachment to the keel the rudder itself has some weaknesses. The rudder fittings should be carefully examined and the play in the rudder tested. The deck and cabintop are cored with PVC foam and may be subject to ‘oilcanning’ so reinforcement is advised for offshore work. With her deck-stepped mast the Albin Vega is susceptible to compression damage at the mast foot but this is often remedied by adding supports below. The large window’s in the hull are a weak point for offshore work and the stem fitting at the bow has been deemed inadequate. The Vega is also known to be difficult to control under power in reverse.

More than 3000 Albin Vegas were built and there are generally a number for sale on the used boat market, the majority of which can be found in Europe and the UK. A search of the current boat market shows prices around 9,000 to 12,00 Euros depending on condition. There are eight different national Albin Vega Associations, each with their own website as well as a worldwide umbrella organisation Vega One Design Association (VODA). Prospective owners have a wealth of contacts here and there is also an owner’s group on Yahoo (link below).

Accommodations There is a V-berth forward with hanging locker and private marine head directly aft to port and starboard. The salon is amidships with settees port and starboard and storage above/below. The galley is split to either side of the companionway, and access to the engine is easily accomplished via cockpit/cabin hatches. The Vega has approximately 5'11" headroom and can sleet four (4) adults comfortably. Galley A teak veneer counter top covers both sections of the galley with counter top inserts creating a large flat workable surface for a navigation station. To port, there is a SS sink with foot pump, storage shelves and a dry storage bin aft. To starboard, there is space for a stove with storage above/below and a dry storage locker aft. Electrical & Navigation 12vDC electrical system with one (1) marine battery providing power for engine start and cabin/navigation lights. Rigging & Sails Masthead sloop rig with Selden aluminum spars and SS standing rigging. Harken roller-furling genoa with Selden boom roller furling. Sails and rigging appear to be in good condition. Deck Equipment Molded-in deck toe rail with SS bow and stern pulpits, SS stanchions, double lifelines with gates, and whisker pole. Tiller steering with deep cockpit coamings, deep storage lockers port and starboard, cockpit awning, horseshoe buoy with SS mount, dodger frame and manual bilge pump. Two (2) Lewmar #6 halyard winches mounted either side of the mast, and two (2) Lewmar #16 winches mounted on cockpit coaming for genoa sheeting. A six-foot genoa track with lead cars is mounted on the toe rail port and starboard. The main has end-boom sheeting via a traveler. Danforth anchor, chain, fenders, ring buoy and PFDs are stored in cockpit lazerette. Mechanical 10 hp Volvo MD2 diesel. Comments The Vega 27 is a very popular offshore cruiser that has an active class association, and is stable in almost any wind and sea condition. Her prop and rudder are protected by a 3' 10" full keel, and her deep cockpit coaming provides very good protection in stormy seas. "Fiddler" is a very forgiving boat that is safe, easy to sail, and would make a perfect small family cruiser.

Albin Vega Sailboat

Things you should know about albin vega.

Albin Vega is a boat that falls under the sailboat class. It is a very solid boat and it has been used in different parts of the world on different occasions. It is renowned for extreme trips made to Spitsbergen and Antarctica. The history of the boat is a long one and because of this, it is very popular. Even though the boat is modest, it happens to be very tough.

This is one of the safest boats to have while out at sea. It is also a very fast boat and offers comfort for a couple of people. The boat has been able to earn a great reputation in terms of offshore cruising. This is a modest boat that has fiberglass slop and does not have the massive fittings that are common with new models. It does not have bowsprits or lid decks that many people think all deep-sea boats ought to have. The boat is tough, even though some people misunderstand the kind of power it has.

The appearance of the Albin Vega sailboat

The Albin Vega 27 has a reverse sheer, which gives it that humpbacked kind of appearance when you look from certain angles. Generally, the appearance is not remarkable. Over 3000 of these boats were created during the production phase that lasted a little over a decade. Today, there are still thousands still sailing in different parts of the world.

The main aim of creating the boat was to achieve a seaworthy, roomy, fast, light, and cheap boat that could be a fancy of many. The boat was meant to be affordable, seaworthy, roomy, quite fast, and light. For many sailboats, the target was almost impossible. This is because most of the sailboats that you may know of are seaworthy but they are not as fast. In addition, you may find a roomy sailboat only to realize that it is expensive.

The Albin Vega was produced and it exceeded most people’s expectations in many areas. The only thing that this model lacks is space below deck. This seems to be one of the areas where other models supersede it. However, most of the modern designs do not create the best standards in as far as seaworthiness is concerned but instead concentrate on creating the best interior space.

Albin Vega basic design

The Albin Vega 27 has a narrow beam when compared to others, it is only 8 feet, and this causes the snugness witnessed below. However, accommodations within the boat are comfortable and can fit two adults quite well, even if they are headed out for long trips. However, if you need a short vacation, you may include two children.

For good tracking, a boat needs sufficient length and this is something that Albin Vega 27 bears. In the trades, there is a keel that reduces the boat surface area. As a result, the friction of the deep-sea keel ensures that the boat performs much better when in light air.

The keel and the rudder are attached at the end of the aft. While this is great support, the rudder can be weak at some point. The rudder does not have a cutout to host the propeller . This makes it emerge from deadwood just below the counter and above the ridge.

The hull of the Albin Vega 27 is created using solid fiberglass. This is said to be around 3.8 inches at the sheer line and around one inch at the keel base.

Should you buy the Albin Vega?

This is a solid boat that is worth the investment, especially for people who truly understand it and its history. It is a valuable piece to purchase and it can give you a great experience while on the water sailing. The later models of this boat had Volvo diesel engines as opposed to gasoline engines. They also include 10 horsepower MD6A and 13 horsepower MD7A.

It has a combi variable pitch propeller that was used in the earlier boats created. Later transmissions were added, making it even more functional. Looking for the best Albin Vega 27 for sale is, therefore, a wise decision on the part of the buyer because there is a lot to look forward to.
