Lil Yachty and J. Cole Share Video for New Song “The Secret Recipe”: Watch

J. Cole Lil Yachty in “The Secret Recipe”

Lil Yachty and J. Cole have come together for the new song and music video “ The Secret Recipe .” Check out the new video, directed by Lil Yachty and AMD Visuals , below.

While “The Secret Recipe” is J. Cole and Lil Yachty’s first collaborative song, the rappers share a bit of a history. In 2011 and 2012, when he was 14 years old, Lil Yachty tweeted a number of anti-Cole remarks , such as, “ i just dont like j.cole.... never said he wasnt good ,” and, “ FUCKJCOLE. ”

Years later, in 2016, Lil Yachty discussed the tweets in an interview , “I honestly can’t explain it. I don’t know why. Back in the day, I was heavy on saying, ‘Fuck J. Cole.’ I don’t know why. His music is so lyrical—let me clear this up.”

He continued, “I fuck with J. Cole as a person. I don’t listen to J. Cole. But I have nothing against J. Cole. I was young, and I was just talking shit, trolling. I never thought I was gonna be a rapper.”

Yachty concluded, “I have no issues with J. Cole or his music, and if we ever bump into each other, I don’t wanna any problems.”

Later, in December 2016, J. Cole released the song “ Everybody Dies ,” featuring the following lyrics:

Clap at the fake deep rappers The OG gatekeep rappers The would-you-take-a-break-please rappers Bunch of words and ain’t sayin’ shit, I hate these rappers ’Specially the amateur eight-week rappers Lil’ whatever, just another short-bus rapper Fake drug dealers turn tour bus trappers

The “Lil’ whatever” lyric, in particular, led many to believe that J. Cole was dissing Lil Yachty and Lil Uzi Vert. After hearing the song, Lil Yachty said , “Honestly, I don’t give a fuck. I fuck with J. Cole, bro! I don’t listen to J. Cole, but I fuck with J. Cole.” He also brought up his teenage tweets and said, “I hope that he doesn’t feel any type of way.”

Lil Uzi Vert also responded to “Everybody Dies,” tweeting , “Heard some beautiful shit today @JColeNC 🔥💯. 😈®.” J. Cole, incidentally, recently collaborated with Lil Uzi Vert, co-producing the “ Blood Moon .”

“The Secret Recipe” follows Lil Yachty’s latest studio album, Let’s Start Here. , and J. Cole’s 2021 album, The Off-Season .

Lil Yachty and J. Cole Unite on New Single and Video "The Secret Recipe"

Hopping on Yachty's latest—which is more 'Let's Start Here' than "Poland"—Cole takes a moment to point out that once he’s “on your song, your streams going up,” even if it’s “not quite the Drake effect.”

Lil Yachty ’s looking to continue a damn near flawless run with an unexpected J. Cole collaboration filled with live instrumentation and introspective bars.

The new Yachty/AMD Visuals co-directed video for “The Secret Recipe” sees the Let’s Start Here creator lock in comfortably with the 16-time Grammy-nominated Cole, who we last heard in August alongside Gucci Mane on Mike Will Made-It’s “There I Go.” In addition to the exciting deviation that was Yachty’s latest album, the 26-year-old has powered through the year with singles like “Strike (Holster)” and, just a month ago, “Tesla.”

But circling back to that word for a second, "unexpected." Talking to Complex’s Ecleen Luzmila Caraballo this week , Lil Boat—who just embarked on his 39-date Field Trip Tour—reminded fans, “I’m just an artist, and you should never expect anything because I will always do something unexpected. Just don't expect it. … You know, I hate to disappoint, but I'm here to disappoint if you start expecting shit.”

On "The Secret Recipe," Cole, 38, takes a moment to flex about the attention he brings other artists when he turns in a guest verse, rapping, “I’m on your song, your streams going up/Not quite the Drake Effect , but don’t complain bitch, take what you get and cut the label check.”

A press release fittingly proclaims that the track "embodies hip-hop’s competitive essence as both Yachty and Cole unpack their frustrations with the rap game while addressing the undeniable influence they’ve had on the culture throughout their careers."

While Cole’s been quiet on the album front since May 2021, this year he helped propel Lil Durk’s Almost Healed single “All My Life” to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s been on the chart for 19 weeks and currently sits at a strong No. 16. Durk wasted no time admitting Cole "smoked my ass on that."

See Lil Yachty and J. Cole connect on “The Secret Recipe”—which is definitely more Let's Start Here than "Poland"—above via YouTube, and catch the song on Spotify and Apple Music soon.

Lil Yachty continues his run of electrifying new singles with the release of “The Secret Recipe,” which features fellow rap superstar J. Cole .

Yachty showcases his lyrical dexterity during the first verse, rapping, “I never wanted peace, f__k all the opps, I support Malcolm X/ The stack of chains is just a front/ Overtaxed and underwhelming, your jeweler pulled a major stunt.” Cole also brings the heat, rapping, “Cole and Yachty, comin’ for they respect, come and pay your debt/ Just like a travel pillow, we at your neck for the way you slept.” Check out the visual for the track below.

Earlier this month, Yachty and  JID  reunited under their celebrated BlakkBoyz moniker to share a new double single entitled  Blakkboyz Present Half Doin Dope/Van Gogh . At the end of August, the MC returned with another new single “Tesla.” The accompanying visual was directed by Lyrical Lemonade’s Cole Bennett.

To kick off the track, Yachty dismisses his haters, rapping, “I ain’t goin’ back and forth with that n___a, he ain’t even made no millions/ He keep on droppin’ the block, it’s a real reason.”

Yachty has been releasing a ton of new music lately. Earlier in August he released “Slide,” which was preceded by  “SOLO STEPPIN CRETE BOY.”  That track also arrived with a visual.

On “SOLO STEPPIN” he raps, “All this Chrome on my body like a medieval knight/ I was f____n’ up a sack on that purple Sprite/ All my b_____s been official, even tote a pistol/ Even blow up like a whistle, lie to officials.”

In the accompanying visual, Yachty is wrapped up in an American flag and later seen showcasing his signature swagger outside of a monastery.

Back in May, Yachty announced a 39 stop global tour in support of his most recent and highly acclaimed album  Let’s Start Here. (Quality Control Music/Motown Records), which was released in January of 2023 to much critical acclaim.

J. Cole Delivers Verse Of The Year Contender On ‘Secret Recipe’ Collab With Lil Yachty

J. Cole has extended his hot streak of show-stealing verses on a surprise new collaboration with Lil Yachty , delivering what some fans are already calling the verse of the year.

“The Secret Recipe” arrived without warning on Friday (September 29), and hears the Atlanta and North Carolina rap stars trading verses over an ethereal beat that evokes Harry Fraud ‘s “Bird on a Wire” (but was actually produced by Rawbone and Yachty himself).

Lil Boat kicks things off with one of his most focused lyrical displays thus far, declaring himself “the secret recipe” behind some of your favorite rappers’ sound and style while also addressing the critics who “refuse to act like I ain’t shift the sound, like I ain’t push the culture.”

Cole World then picks up the baton and spits a clever yet cutting verse that takes aim at everything from the media and fake woke activists who “profit off of racial stress” to studio gangstas.

“Studio steppers moving extra on songs, fakin’ rep/ Only breaking bad in the lab, thought y’all was making meth/ N-ggas making threats and I laugh, that’s ’cause you ain’t a threat/ Don’t ask how I feel about no rappers, shit, they okay, I guess,” he raps.

Injecting some humor into the bars-fest, the Dreamville leader jokingly admits that his popularity isn’t quite on par with that of his close friend and competition, Drake , before referencing Cam’ron and Ma$e ‘s dedication to the “pause” game.

“Incoming call, press the button, the one that say accept/ He FaceTimed to ask for a feature and saw the face of death/ I’m on your song, your streams going up, not quite the Drake effect/ But don’t complain, bitch, take what you get and cut the label check,” he spits.

“My table set, I dine on your favorite, one verse will take his breath/ I probably put more n-ggas on pause than Cam and Mason Beth.”

Cole signs off his standout verse by declaring himself “the greatest yet.”

lil yachty j cole rap genius

While that lofty claim is up for debate, plenty of fans — including prominent Hip Hop figures and journalists — are already making the case for J. Cole’s “The Secret Recipe” verse being the best lyrical performance of 2023.

“J COLE WENT CRAZYYYYYYYYY on this Secret Recipe Track. That n-gga need to DROP MORE OFTEN,” Akademiks wrote on X shortly after the song’s midnight release.

“J. Cole is on a what… 4 or 5 year streak now of just absolutely disgusting verses, especially features,” GQ ‘s Frazier Tharpe noted.

Billboard ‘s Carl Lamarre added: “This is the same man that’s considered third place behind Drake and Kendrick. Shit crazy. It’s unfortunate because any other class, he would be the top n-gga and deservingly so. Regardless, Cole a first ballot hall of famer and top 10-15 ever to do it.”

“No exaggeration this could be one of Cole’s best verses ever,” another listener claimed.

While J. Cole has yet to put out any solo music this year outside of his contributions to the Dreamville-curated Creed III soundtrack , “The Secret Recipe” is just his latest cameo in ’23 following Lil Durk’s “All My Life,” Gucci Mane’s “There I Go,” Bas’ “Passport Bros,” Burna Boy’s “Thanks” and J-Hope’s “On the Street.”

He also gave Summer Walker a sweet “audio hug” on the intro to her Clear 2: Soft Life project, which dropped in May.

May 12, 2023

Cole’s collaborative streak dates back to 2019, when he shunned the “no features” approach he had taken on albums like 2014 Forest Hills Drive , 4 Your Eyez Only and KOD . Dreamville’s Revenge of the Dreamers III compilation, released that summer, featured everyone from T.I. and DaBaby to Vince Staples and Smino.

In an editorial he wrote for The Players’ Tribune the following year, the Grammy-winner explained what inspired his change of heart when it comes to working with his peers.

“A combination of a competitive ego mixed with a deep fear of rejection had kept me from collaborating with peers that I respected all of these years and prevented me from building real friendships with them,” he admitted. “I had spent my career closed off. I didn’t want that to be the case forever.”

Female Rappers Are Running Hip-Hop But It’s Not Translating to Album Sales

Lil Yachty Re-Follows Drake On Instagram Following Intense Fan Speculation

Lil Yachty Visits Somewhere Nowhere NYC

Well, that was quick. Fans of Lil Yachty and Drake 's collaborative chemistry breathed a sigh of relief when it became clear that the former is now following the latter on Instagram. Moreover, this is because social media users initially went into a frenzy due to the Atlanta creative unfollowing the Toronto superstar , which eagle-eyed followers spotted on Tuesday (August 20). Of course, a lot of the controversy behind this is that the duo has a strong personal bond. Also, they picked a very inconvenient time to spark this sort of thing, as the rest of the world has intensely tallied up Drizzy's enemies in the rap game for a couple of months now.

But the Kendrick Lamar and Drake battle isn't the only factor that fans thought contributed to Lil Yachty's unfollow. It's also the fact that, based on some online teases, Drake is gearing up to officially release the track " Supersoak ." However, it seems like this cut no longer features Yachty. The Let's Start Here. artist had initially leaked the original collaborative version of this song to Kai Cenat after they failed to clear the sample. The reason why is because the sampled artist, Mr. Hotspot, refused to do so unless they made a clean version of their link-up.

Lil Yachty Re-Follows Drake (If He Ever Really Unfollowed Him In The First Place)

As such, when Lil Yachty unfollowed Drake for a brief moment, one popular fan theory was that Mr. Hotspot allowed the latter to drop the song if he removed the former from it. After all, it was Yachty who spilled much of this tea on a recent podcast. During this same session, he also expressed regret over sharing his thoughts on the Kendrick Lamar beef. These comments really angered much of the OVO fanbase, and planted the seeds of doubt concerning their friendship that manifested today.

Meanwhile, Lil Yachty also has some other critics to deal with. Jim Jones challenged him to a " fashion battle " to settle the debate over Atlanta style and New York style that Yachty sparked earlier this year. Regardless of whether or not this Drake situation is anything legitimate, he will probably continue to share his unfiltered and outspoken perspective on the culture. Let's see whether or not they will spend "Another Late Night" in the studio together or if this marks something more contentious.

Cardi B

2024 is set to be quite the year for Hip Hop and R&B with a lineup of anticipated releases from artists like Lil Uzi Vert, Ice Spice, Summer Walker, Future and Metro Boomin, and many more. Music predictions are inherently uncertain, as highlighted by Kanye West ‘s repeatedly delayed Vultures album. However, hope remains high as speculation continues over whether Rihanna will end her hiatus since 2016’s ANTI .

While unpredictable, 2024 is shaping up to be significant for music. Check out our list of some of the most anticipated albums of the year below!

Following her 2018 debut, Invasion of Privacy , Cardi B is set to release her second album in 2024. Despite a six-year gap, her first LP’s success — including a No. 1 on the Billboard 200, over four million U.S. sales, and a Grammy for Best Rap Album — has given her the leverage to take her time.

Notably, 2020’s hit “WAP” with Megan Thee Stallion has been RIAA-certified platinum eight times since it came out. While other records like “Hot S**t” featuring Lil Durk and Kanye West, “Up” and “Bongos” admittedly haven’t shared the same charting success, they’re all great records that put her artistic range on display.

“I should already start talking about the album because I’m going to be putting it out very soon,” Cardi explained to HOT 97’s Ebro Darden. “I’m just holding it because I feel like I’m missing a couple of things.”

2. Metro Boomin and Future

Future and Metro Boomin are slated to debut their anticipated joint project later this year. Having already teamed up for hits like “Jumpman” and “Mask Off,” the duos collaborations have consistently delivered chart-topping music.

The Atlanta-based beatmaker is notably riding high from recent successes, including his second solo album and contributions to the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse soundtrack. In January 2023, Future labeled the upcoming project as the “album of the year,” while Metro shared a snippet of a new song in June. Adding to the anticipation, Pluto recently cleared his Instagram posts while hinting at imminent new music.

3. J. Cole: The Fall Off

J. Cole first teased The Fall Off in 2020 with very few updates since. However, in recent years, he achieved several career milestones: his first Grammy Award, a diamond-certified single and a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with “First Person Shooter.”

Cole also successfully expanded Dreamville, cultivating stars like JID and Ari Lennox in addition to the label’s annual festival. Not to mention, the music icon cemented his status as a formidable guest artist on tracks with Drake, BIA, BTS’ j-hope, Lil Durk, Joyner Lucas, Nicki Minaj and Lil Yachty. So far, every song he has been featured on has been a pleasant listen that feeds into anticipation for his next full-length project.

4. Ice Spice

Last year was a big year for Ice Spice, who topped Rap-Up’s “ Rappers Who Bodied 2023″ list. Her collaborations with notable artists like Nicki Minaj, PinkPantheress, Taylor Swift and Rema amplified her presence in various genres. While her EP Like…? maintained her momentum through songs like “In Ha Hood Mood” and “Gangsta Boo,” fans are eagerly anticipating her debut album.

Ice Spice’s rise since 2022 was strategically remarkable. In July 2023, she released an expanded version of Like…? featuring the hit “Deli.” In 2024, she teased new music with a snippet and a meme captioned, “Think you the s**t, b**ch? You not even the fart.” Although hopefully just a playful troll, 2024 is definitely the Bronx rapper’s year.

5. Lil Uzi Vert: Luv Is Rage 3

Lil Uzi Vert’s Luv Is Rage 3 is a bittersweet addition to this list. Yes, it’s new music from one of this generation’s favorite artists, but the Philadelphia native also claimed it will be their last project before returning to a “normal life.” So far, they’ve teased the LP with records like “NFL” and “Red Moon,” both of which are on the experimental side. Overall, it will be really interesting to see what Uzi does with their final body of work, whether it be features, more personal songs or another tour.

6. Megan Thee Stallion

Megan Thee Stallion entered the new year with newfound independence having resolved legal issues with her former label and finally being over with the Tory Lanez case . The Houston native is now fully in control of her musical output, as evident by November 2023’s “Cobra.” The release marked a return to her roots, characterized by unfiltered expressions and bars that demand a second listen.

While she dropped only one standalone record — and her verse on Cardi B’s “Bongos” — Megan teased new music months prior. Speaking to Billboard , she said, “It’s definitely coming very soon… I think Thee Hotties are gonna be so excited. I’m trying different things.” Although she’s no longer under Carl Crawford’s 1501 Certified Entertainment, the artist inked a distribution deal with Warner Music Group, which further hinted at its mass scale.

Considering Traumazine gave us fan favorites like “Plan B” and “Ungrateful,” great things are surely in store for Hot Girl Meg.

7. SZA: LANA

SZA ’s LANA was initially thought to be a deluxe version of her Grammy-nominated album SOS . However, its status as a standalone project or an extension of the latter is still up in the air, especially due to the seven-to-10-song length and the time passed. In a November interview with Variety , she humorously admitted to finalizing projects just before deadlines.

As of now, LANA is shrouded in mystery, with no confirmed release date or tracklist. Recently, SZA revealed what social media assumes is the cover art, signaling progress on the body of work. Although details are sparse, it’s expected to feature a mix of previously unreleased and fresh tracks, such as Justin Bieber’s official remix of “Snooze.”

8. Kanye West & Ty Dolla Sign: Vultures

Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign’s Vultures is one of the most anticipated releases of 2024 despite recent public controversies. In 2023, listening events in Miami and Las Vegas drew large crowds, where the pair previewed work-in-progress versions of the album in its entirety. It also has a host of guest artists, including Kodak Black, Playboi Carti, Chris Brown and Freddie Gibbs.

However, the album’s release is still unknown, with it being pushed back three times already. Nicki Minaj withheld approval for her verse in “New Body,” and there were seemingly clearance issues with the Backstreet Boys’ “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back).” Nonetheless, this project is exactly what Hip Hop needs right now. We’re waiting.

9. Flo Milli: Fine Ho, Stay

Flo Milli’s eagerly awaited album Fine Ho, Stay is the final part of her trilogy. Seemingly intended to come out before her “Thanks For Coming Here, Ho Tour,” the LP has been long-awaited since she announced it. In the Alabama rapper’s case, being patient was worth it, considering she delivered “Never Lose Me” in December 2023. In terms of charting success, it was her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100.

Elsewhere on the project, fans can likely expect “BGC,” which sampled Carl Carlton’s 1981 song “She’s A Bad Mama Jama (She’s Built, She’s Stacked).” With a long list of potential collaborators and unwavering confidence in her approach, it’s safe to say Fine Ho, Stay will be an exciting body of work.

10. Summer Walker

Summer Walker dropped her CLEAR 2: SOFT LIFE EP in May 2023, which nabbed her a Grammy nomination and much-earned praise. It boasted “To Summer, From Cole” with J. Cole as well as “Hardlife” and “How Does It Feel.” Although it ended up being the only new project from her, she graced Usher’s “Good Good” and celebrated the five-year anniversary of “Girls Need Love.” The latter got three new versions, including verses from Tyla, Victoria Monét and Tink.

That being said, Walker’s third studio album is surely something to look forward to. She has a lot to offer in terms of her perspective on motherhood, her relationship with “BMF” star Lil Meech and uncovering more about herself. December 2023’s “DROWN IN MY LOVE” set hopes high.

11. Rihanna

Nearly eight years have passed since Rihanna’s last album, but her successful ventures into lingerie and cosmetics — along with her already iconic music catalog — have sustained her star status. Notably, she headlined the 2022 Super Bowl halftime show despite a long hiatus. While she hinted years ago at working on both a pop and a dancehall album, the current status of her music projects remains unclear. However, her fans remain ready for her potential return to music, whenever that may be.

Within the last few years, Rihanna became a mother of two, America’s youngest self-made billionaire and returned to her role as creative director of PUMA. None of that diminished the public’s desire for new music from her. In 2023, she teased new music, describing her next album as “experimental” and “completely different” from her past work.
