Alaska Crab Fishing Jobs

Crabbing in the bering sea.

Begin a conversation about the crabbing industry and it won’t be long before someone chimes in. The crabbing industry in Alaska is easily the most visible.

Television shows and other media outlets identifying the industry’s incredible earning potential, yet dangerous work environment have sparked a strange allure toward the Bering Sea (Area 4) crabbing industry. It isn’t surprising that an industry that offers such high incomes would draw an interested crowd, but it has also captured the imagination and awe of the adventurer as well. Corralling a crowd that is both interested in money and adventures on the open sea.

The dangers of crabbing in Alaska are very real. The Bureau of Labor Statistics usually ranks Alaskan crab fishing the occupation with the highest mortality rate (300:100,000). Most of these deaths are reported as death by drowning or from hypothermia. Additionally, many more people each year are injured and crippled due to the machinery in use onboard. One of the reasons crabbing in Alaska is so dangerous is because it takes place during the winter months, when crab harvests are at their highest. During the winter, waters are colder, storms are more frequent and the ocean is considerably more difficult to manage. Up until about 2005 the crab industry in Alaska ran on a derby system. This system meant that at the opening date for the season boats left for harvest and crabbed until the quota was met for the year and the crabbing fleets were called in. Fishermen would crab 24 hours a day with crews resting very little in order to catch as much as they could as fast as they could. This added to the human error aspect in the dangers of crabbing and also contributed to many deaths. These hours and risks were considered well worth the pay when a deckhand on a crabbing boat could fetch anywhere from $50,000 – $100,000 during a season.

Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch is a documentary style show highlighting the drama behind the crabbing industry. Rough seas, tight quarters, intense seasons, long work hours and large pending paychecks made the show an instant hit. It also shone light on an industry people knew very little about and was in and of itself intriguing. Since, the crabbing industry in Alaska has seen huge gains in popularity with fans of the show traveling north trying to get a hand in the crabbing industry. Very few experienced crabbers would suggest heading up north with visions of making thousands in the crabbing industry like the men on the popular TV show, however, some people have been lucky enough to become deckhands after a season of cooking or processing for the industry.

2005 was somewhat of a landmark year for the fishing industry because since then, great pains have been taken to make the industry safer for those working. Additionally, the derby system of catching crab has become less popular with boat quotas and tighter regulations on the industry instated for the benefit of the industry and fisherman. This has ultimately yielded better working conditions for crabbers and higher prices for crab throughout the year.

Alaska Crab Fishing Jobs – What to Expect

Before packing your bags and hauling up north, it is best to learn as much as you can about the realities of the work environment and the job market as well. While the Discovery Channel show depicted the more intense arena of the crabbing industry it isn’t by any means a fabrication of what working in that industry entails. The hours are almost certainly cold, long, wet and dangerous. The dangers of the industry shouldn’t be taken lightly as its true that hundreds of people and entire boats go missing each year.

A deckhand position requires heavy lifting, operating dangerous machinery and lots of other physical demands on your body. This might sound on par with very few other physical labor jobs and is only made worse by the long hours at sea, which are also a part of your job description. Keep in mind that in the crabbing industry there are jobs that are profitable but don’t demand as much of you physically. Working as a crab processor is an excellent way for people interested in working extensively in the industry to get their start. It paves the way for connections to be made and allows you to learn just what being a crabber in the Alaskan waters is really like. Some insiders will tell you that if you’re willing, or have any cooking skills it’s a great idea to highlight this when speaking with captains and boats during your job search. A good meal is often times the best part of a fisherman’s day and if you can cook – don’t be modest. It might just come to pass that a meal onboard for fisherman in the crabbing industry, could be your meal ticket.

Bering Group was established with a profound respect for the curiosity-driven pioneers of the past, present, and future, individuals who possess the courage and unwavering determination to venture into the uncharted. Our core mission revolves around the creation of robust steel yachts, meticulously designed to ensure a safe and comfortable voyage, even in the most demanding conditions.

Within the Bering Group umbrella, we cater to a wide spectrum of maritime needs. Bering Yachts specializes in crafting ocean-worthy steel yachts, while Bering Marine offers high-speed catamarans supported by hydrofoil technology. To date, our group has successfully completed 13 yacht and superyacht projects, with an additional 16 currently in progress.

bering yachts careers

Our journey commenced in 2007 when we embarked on the construction of a 55-foot all-metal vessel in Foshan, China. Following the successful completion and delivery of six additional yachts, we relocated our operations to Turkey in 2017. This pivotal move ignited our expansion, and we further augmented our production capabilities by establishing a new shipyard in Bulgaria. Presently, Bering Group’s global headquarters are situated in the United States, with additional offices in Germany and Australia.

In-House Engineers and Designers

At the heart of our enterprise, we take immense pride in our exceptional team, comprising over 250 highly skilled craftsmen. They meticulously bring our extraordinary vessels to life within our state-of-the-art shipbuilding facilities, strategically located in Antalya, Turkey, and Burgas, Bulgaria. Our yachts, ranging up to 24 meters in length, offer something truly exceptional. They seamlessly blend ultimate comfort, safety, and extended cruising ranges—three pillars that underpin our product offering. These vessels are proudly referred to as ‘superyachts,’ as they encapsulate the same level of technological sophistication, production excellence, and quality control seen in larger superyachts. Our commitment is to deliver an unparalleled experience, regardless of the vessel’s size.

In-House Furniture Production

At Bering Yachts, we understand the pivotal role of furniture in crafting a genuinely comfortable, ergonomic, and safe onboard experience for yacht enthusiasts. Our unwavering commitment to quality ensures that every single detail is painstakingly crafted to not only meet but exceed the highest international standards. We are dedicated to utilizing exclusively certified materials specially designed for maritime applications. Whether it’s leather, fabrics, or veneer, we source them diligently from the most reputable manufacturers in the Netherlands, Italy, and Turkey.

Throughout the production process, we pay meticulous attention to every detail. For example, we employ a specialized chamber with precise temperature and humidity controls to store veneer, ensuring its durability and preventing cracking and tearing during operation. Moreover, our yachts feature unique panel attachments that not only reduce noise and vibration but also enhance comfort. These innovative attachments offer yacht owners the flexibility to effortlessly update their interiors whenever desired, ensuring each Bering vessel remains unique today and into the future.

Bering Marine

In May 2017, Bering Group acquired Hysucat, retaining the original name. After several years of introducing new models and design enhancements, Hysucat was rebranded as Bering Marine in 2023. Today, Bering Marine offers an array of boating solutions encompassing both aluminum and fiberglass ranges, all supported by our distinctive hydrofoil technology.

What is ‘hydrofoil technology’?

Hydrofoil technology reduces the contact area with water by elevating the boat above the surface. This innovative approach allows the boat to glide gracefully on the water, ensuring a smooth ride even at high speeds. It also leads to reduced fuel consumption, increased cruising range, and enhanced overall comfort and safety due to significantly reduced impact from waves.

Today, there are over 60 Bering Marine vessels navigating waters worldwide. Our unwavering commitment to quality shines through our meticulous craftsmanship and the use of durable materials. With a rich history and continuous commitment to innovation, Bering Marine offers a range of boats that redefine performance, efficiency, and sustainability.

Bering Yachts to build first expedition catamarans

Thursday, December 21st, 2023

Written by: Marine Industry News

Turkish boatbuilder Bering Yachts will begin manufacturing aluminium catamarans, starting with two models — B60 CAT and B80 CAT. The first Bering-built cats will be delivered in 2025.

Bering says it is drawing upon the experience of more than fifteen years of manufacturing expedition trawler-type full-displacement steel yachts to establish its new brand of fully aluminium expedition catamarans.

The shipyard says the B60 CAT and B80 CAT, the two inaugural catamaran models, are made for leisure and are capable of trans-Atlantic travel.

“It is difficult to hold down my excitement,” says the founder of Bering Yachts, Alexei Mikhailov. “Making catamarans has been a long dream of mine, and finally we are here. Just like with our yachts, we will make these boats both very comfortable and capable of going anywhere you might imagine.”

Bering B60

Measuring 18.7 metres long, the B60 CAT has an 8.6-metre beam, displaces 55 tons, and offers layout flexibility. This three-deck boat can be built with 4, 5, or even 6 staterooms. The catamaran also features three isolated external zones, a spacious deck, sunpads, a lazarette, and a 9sqm rising platform for water activities.

B60 CAT has a maximum speed of 13 knots and can travel up to 3,000 nautical miles non-stop at 9-10 knots of cruise speed, according to Bering. The first of the B60 CAT boats has already been sold.

Bering Yachts B107

Bering Yachts has kicked off 2021 with a bang. The industrious Turkish shipyard just laid the keel of a new semi-custom superyacht and has six other vessels currently in construction at its Antalya facility.

The newest 107-footer, fittingly dubbed the B107 on account of its length, was sold in 2020 and will now undergo a painstaking two-year build before it finally hits the seas.

The B107 is billed as a “long-range cruiser” and has been designed to cover some serious nautical miles. The full-displacement, steel-hulled vessel has the rugged exterior and go-anywhere nature of a true explorer yacht. At the same time, it offers the space and comfort of a much larger superyacht.

Spearheaded by the yard’s in-house design team, the B107 features luxurious contemporary styling that has all the glitz and glamor of a modern condo. It has been tailored to suit the new owner’s needs, which are firmly rooted in family. As such, the vessel boasts four dining areas and plenty of living areas where the whole gang can relax.

Bering Yachts B107

The main salon.

The vessel can sleep a total of 10 guests and features two master suites, which is quite unusual for a yacht this size. The first master stateroom is on the upper deck behind the pilothouse and features its own private terrace with panoramic ocean views.

The second full-beam master is located on the main deck and offers direct access to the sauna on the foredeck. There are also three guest suites on the lower deck, along with crew quarters that comprise three crew cabins, a captain’s cabin, a dedicated laundry and a walk-in pantry.

Still, its touted performance stats may actually be the most impressive part. The Bering 107 is fitted out for lengthy voyages and can hold nearly 9,000 gallons of fuel. This gives the vessel a range of 4,000 nautical miles when traveling at the cruising speed of 9 knots. That’ll get you from New York to the French Riviera and then some.

The Bering 107 is due to be delivered in October of 2022.

Bering 60 is the Winner at the Moscow Boat Show

Drawn to the lure of bluewater adventure via semi-custom steel and aluminum construction, countless clients visited the  Bering Yachts  booth placed in the Moscow Boat Show at Crocus Expo International Exhibition Center March 5 to 9, 2020.

Models of the Bering 130, Bering 106, and Bering 60 gave customers a view of the liveaboard experience and an understanding of the benefits of steel yachts for safety, durability, and comfort.

“We are grateful to our Moscow Boat Show clients for their interest and their ability to explain what qualities they seek in yacht construction,” said Bering Russia representative Vladimir Maslovsky. “Based on their feedback at the show we plan to upgrade the Bering 60 and retain it in our model line with upgrades in style, amenities, and materials.”

Vladimir Maslovsky and sales and marketing manager Elena Kanburoglu were on duty at the Bering booth. This was the second year Bering was onsite at the show. The event bills itself as offering something for “everybody who enjoys life at sea – boat owners, boat enthusiasts, families, fishermen, water lovers, and beginners.” Bering participated alongside companies including Prestige Yachts, Smart Yachts, Ultraboats, Velvette Marine, West Nautical, Mercury, M-Power, and Harman.
