A Brief History of BSI… and RSB Rigging Solutions

Steve Branagh, the founder of RSB Rigging Solutions has a long history, both as a yacht captain, and as a business, with the biggest names in the superyacht rigging industry. One of these such names is the company BSI. We spoke to Ulf Josefsson, one of the BSI directors about the history of BSI and how they have grown to become one of the largest leading manufacturers and suppliers of rod, wire, fibre rigging and components to the growing carbon rigging sector  for both new builds and in retrofit, globally.

BSI started as a small Scandinavian supplier of wire rigging hardware over thirty years ago, supplying sailing yachts (of) from around 22ft. At that  time, BSI was  the biggest manufacturer of wire rigging in the world. A s they grew, the company began to extend their product lines and gradually started getting in to rod rigging as suppliers to amongst many OEM builders, X-Yachts,   as well as Jongert in  the superyacht market. This expansion continued until they bought the  rod rigging company, Global Rigging, in 2005.  Since then BSI have kept growing to become the worldwide leading supplier of wire rigging fittings, rod rigging, and custom components to carbon rigging to new builds and the ever growing refit sector.

When Ulf joined BSI in 2005, the opportunities in the larger yacht division was realised and the company opened its dedicated department for superyachts. From here the company has grown into a global multi-million Euro business. In 2015 Robbie Sargent, a well known figure in the yacht rigging industry since the late 80:s when he and Ulf were colleagues at Riggarna, joined the BSI Team bringing it to yet another level.   BSI is the preferred supplier to Southern Spars and supply  hardware interface for the EC6 rigging, as well as for the carbon rigging from Carbo-Link. BSI also supplies all the rod rigging for Oyster Yachts. We reinvest heavily into new equipment and technology to move with the times. Customisation is a major part of the sailing industry these days, and at BSI we have made sure that we keep up with the times. The sailing industry has grown and BSI with it… 

Ulf comments,

”Going back to some of the first projects the BSI superyacht division worked on, the stunning 58M sloop Kokomo III stand out amongst the new builds and the 64M ketch ex. Felicita West amongst refits.

Another project close to my heart is Juliet, a 146’ ketch built by Huisman that I sold rigging to when the yacht was launched in the early 90’s and where BSI updated and replaced her standing rigging package in 2015.  At the time Juliet was launched, she was   one of the largest yachts on the water!

BSI has offices in Denmark, USA and United Kingdom with distributors and service centers all over the world… in Cape Town, we have supplied every rod rigging package for Southern Wind Shipyard over the last 12 years; if the yacht is build with the EC6 rigging, then the interface equipment is all BSI hardware.

In our opinion, one of the reasons for our success is that we do everything in-house; no-outsourcing other than for aluminium anodizing and chromium plating of bronze fitting. This means that when the time is tight, BSI have only one factory to contract to get the job done.

BSI also recently bought Gori  Propellers. We supply Gori Propellers to all the TP52s, Volvo 60s and Gunboat.’’

RIGGING SERVICE PROGRAMME

BSI Recommended Standing Rigging Maintenance and Service Guidelines

BSI has developed a Rigging Service Programme that focuses on preventive maintenance to protect the structural integrity of a yacht’s rigging and enhances performance, longevity and safety for the yacht’s guests and crew while maximising the investment with limited service downtime. Yachts participating in the Rigging Service Programme will have their maintenance records continually updated with the assurance this information is safely secured at BSI Headquarters in Denmark. No yacht is alike

BSI professionals, with years of rigging experience, know that all vessels are not built or treated equally.

Furthermore, our vast database of delivered and serviced rigging equipment gives us a continually improving understanding of wear & tear over a yacht’s life from the club racer to the largest blue water cruising yachts. No yacht is alike, so BSI  offers flexibility in the programme to coincide with the yacht’s scheduled refit plans. Pre-service inspections are recommended as this allows both BSI and the yacht to plan in advance and minimize downtime.

Factors affecting life expectancy

The life expectancy of a set of rigging, whether rod, fibre or wire, can be affected by many factors:

• Age of rigging
• Miles sailed
• Sailing conditions
• Designed safety factors
• Proper tune
• Adherence to maintenance schedules
• Traumatic events such as groundings, knock-downs and flying jibes
• Environmental conditions and Corrosion

Customised service

For yachts using composite rigging, either exclusively or in combination with some stays in rod, the service recommendations remain the same for the metal hardware used as attachments of composite stays.

BSI work with professionals, individual owners, captains and management companies to establish a customised service schedule tailored to the yacht’s needs. Service recommendations are based on the rigging manufacturer’s specifications, the vessel’s history of sailing and maintenance, future sailing plans, and the yacht’s projected downtime and budget. Therefore, BSI has developed a series of categories to help identify which classification the yacht falls into. These categories will tend to experience different mileage and sailing conditions.

• Category 1 – Ocean Going with Professional Crew Yachts typically are of heavier displacement, do higher mileage and designed with
• Category 2 – Offshore with Amateur Crew or Short handed Yachts typically are performance style Cruisers intended for Offshore and Blue Water use.
• Category 3 – Coastal Cruising / Club Racing with Amateur Crew or Short handed Yachts typically are of lighter displacement and intended for Inshore and Coastal use
• Category 4 – Racing with Professional Crew Yachts typically are of lightweight construction and intended for Performance use, with higher Safe Working Loads

• Un-stepping the rig and removing all rigging components
• Cleaning and inspecting all fittings, rigging and rod heads
• Non-destructive testing—(NDT) with dye penetrant, where determined necessary
• Re-heading and re-seating all Diagonals, Forward and Aft Rods, if deemed necessary
• Re-furbishing and polishing of all fittings in accordance with manufacturers guidelines 
• Reviewing history of non-metallic rigging, bench testing or replacement according to manufacturer’s recommendations. Generally, Kevlar Stays are replaced at this time 
• Full lubrication and dressing
• Re-stepping
• Dock tuning and sea trial
• Forward inspection notes to BSI for update of BSI Service Log
• Cleaning and inspecting all fittings, rigging and rod 
• Re-heading or replacement of all vertical rods
• Re-heading and re-seating all Diagonals, Forward and Aft Rods
• Re-furbishing and polishing of all fittings of all fittings in accordance with manufacturers guidelines
• Reviewing history of non-metallic rigging, bench testing or replacement according to manufacturer’s recommendations. Generally, Kevlar Stays are replaced at this time
• Replacement of any rod(s) from original manufacture
• Reviewing history of non-metallic rigging, bench testing or replacement according to manufacturer’s                                         recommendations. Generally, Kevlar Stays are replaced at this time
• Replacement of any rod(s) and fittings from original delivery
• Comprehensive Rigging System Inspection 
• Adjust Mast Tune if Required 
• Recommended Rigging System Inspection several times a year and before and after a long or heavy passage 
• Contact BSI for advice if any concerns arise
• Comprehensive Visual Inspection of the Sail & Rigging System 
• Complete inspection of all accessible rod heads
• Re-lubrication of all accessible Rod Heads and Fittings
• Re-tuning the rig, as necessary
• Updating BSI Service Log for the yacht
• Updating the BSI Service Log
• Re-furbishing and polishing of all fittings non-original fittings in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines
