MAT 1220, A New Rocket Signed Mark Mills

MAT 1220

The MAT 1220 is a great design, signed by Mark Mills , for a new generation of IRC racers for MAT, emphasizing versatility both in performance profile and configurations. The premise for the boat is to produce a modern light design that is equally at home offshore as inshore, taking the rating-friendly features of the successful ‘French’ IRC design type and combine with slightly lighter displacement.

MAT 1220

This French style of IRC design combines features such as medium displacement, greater emphasis on bow overhang, fin keel of moderate draft, and a number of sail plan tweaks to arrive at a very competitive corrected time solution inshore over 12knots true, and offshore in most conditions.

Because of this combination of these features, it is inherently competitive reaching, and the Turkish yard has been working on improving the inshore character of the MAT 1220 in sub-12 for better light airs windward leeward performance without giving up the ability to get on the step downwind at a reasonable wind speed.  The base rating for the fin keel version with pinhead main is around 1.155, while with the fin keel and a squaretop it could go up to 1.190.

MAT 1220

Building on the deck and styling of the MAT1070, the large cockpit offers an optimal platform for high-level racing as open space for fun family sailing.  The interior of the MAT 1220 can be completed to a range of fitouts from stripped racing to offshore racing to family racer/cruiser.

MAT 1220

The sail plan of the MAT 1220 is built around the lower-rated pinhead main, but for lighter air venues the square top main offers a useful increase in sail area.  A twin rudder option is available for more offshore-oriented campaigns, and multiple winch choices range from the base layout to a pedestal-driven solution and a powered winch option.  Because it is not an extreme type form with a medium-sized sail plan and reasonable displacement, stability, and draft, the yard is also working on an ORC optimized configuration.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

MAT 1220 – another Mark Mills-Rocket

  • January 25th, 2022
  • Sailing Yacht

These days Alp Somer, one of the founders and partner of MAT Yachts in Turkey, published some renderings and first pictures of the latest boat and the internet kind of exploded. The IRC-optmized racer/cruisers from Izmir are an insider´s tip and regularly stir up the scene, win races, especially in the Mediterranean. After “discovering” MAT myself two years ago (I love the MAT 1070 really much!) I wrote another article on the upcoming MAT 1340 and with the brand new 1220 surprising us all, I took my chance to seek contact to Alp again.

mat 12 yacht

Lars Reisberg | NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “Merhaba, Alp. Good to see you again! Before we speak about the lasts Mark Mills rocket, let me ask: The MAT 1340 as announced prior to C19-craziness hasn´t seen water right now, why is that and why did you launch the 1220 beforehand?”

Alp Somer | MAT Yachts: “Hi there, Lars. Yes, that is true. We had announced the MAT 1340 prior to the whole Corona-crisis and sadly we had to hold this project during these very uncertain times. You see, with very limited racing opportunities almost everywhere in the world this market kind of “closed”. Also, we noticed that there was a strong tendancy of owners and buyers towards slightly smaller boats. That said, smaller boats need with fewer people on board. Sounds logical.”

mat 12 yacht

NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “I understand. So you switched and pushed the new 12.20 instead. This is an IRC-optimized boat. In the Northern countries, like Germany for example, the IRC-scene is a fairly small one as most races are ORC and people tend to favor these boats. What´s your opinion on this?

Alp Somer: “Well, you see, the IRC-racing scene has a great number of boats and is still the leading system for the big worldwide respected offshore- and inshore-events. On the other hand, you are absolutely right, one must not ignore ORC. This is becoming more and more popular in many countries. Our new MAT 1220 is designed with features such as medium displacement, greater emphasis on bow overhang, fin keel of moderate draft and a number of tweaks in the sail plan that this boat will arrive at a very competitive corrected time solution inshore over 12 knots true. This is also valid in most offshore-conditions. Because it is not an extreme typeform with a medium sized sail plan and reasonable displacement, stability and draft, I can announce that we are also currently working on an ORC-optimized configuration.”

mat 12 yacht

NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “The 12.20 looks awesome. What do you recon are the improvements over the MAT 1245? Where will the new one be better at? Will the 12.45 be phased out?”

Alp Somer: “Our MAT 1245 is a very successful IRC-racing concept, very hard to beat in certain conditions, especially in upwind-downwind races, light and medium. It has also plenty of interior and I would call it a true dual purpose yacht. We will of course not terminate the production of this boat. The aim for the MAT 1220 is to create a lighter, faster boat to provide more excitement. The premise for the boat is to produce a modern light design that is equally at home offshore as inshore, taking the rating-friendly features of the successful ‘French’ IRC-design type and combine it with slightly lighter displacement. Because of the combination of these features it is inherently competitive reaching, and we have been working on improving the inshore character of the boat in sub-12 for better light airs windward-leeward performance without giving up the ability to get on the step downwind at a reasonable wind speed. The base rating for the fin keel version with pinhead main is around 1.155, while with the fin keel and a square top it could go up to 1.190.”

mat 12 yacht

NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “Which target group of sailors do you want to motivate to go for a 1220? How many units have been ordered so far?”

Alp Somer: “MAT 1220 is built as a true racing boat and not comparable to production boats fitted with some racing features. It has always been the case with MAT Yachts. Therefore we are targeting experienced sailors able to read numbers and usually buying their next boat. I am proud and happy that we have been able to sell three hulls even before our official announcement of the MAT 1220. Two more so far which are going to clients who are already racing with our yachts. So we are pretty excited as of now.”

mat 12 yacht

NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “What are the current delivery times, or maybe waiting times, for a MAT yacht in general? How has your company been affected by the C19-craze in general and the latest problems in worldwide supply chains?”

Alp Somer: “In general we aren´t that much affected which is a very good thing. Also, we I can say that our order books are pretty well filled, which is also great. The next delivery is for a MAT 1070 would be November 2022 if ordered soon. For the new MAT 1220 the same. For the MAT 1340 it will be early 2023. That´s because it is harder and significantly more expensive to supply raw material and equipment. Fortunately, even the worst days of pandemic, we only briefly had to stop the production. So just for a short period of time. In this, we are lucky that we were among the few to having a modern, clean and spacious building in a green and healthy area. So not much affected by Corona. Also, we quickly organized a private transport-system for our staff to avoid public transport and”

mat 12 yacht

NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “What are MAT´s future projects when 1220 hits series production and maybe after 1340 has been launched? Any new boats upcoming, maybe as well with Mark Mills?”

Alp Somer: “We have a lot of ideas, as you can imagine, Lars. But at this moment we focus on working ourselves through the order books and getting our new projects started. We have a pretty attractive line-up o6 six different boats in our offer. You should come and visit our yard here in Izmir!”

Tesekkürler, Alp! Thanks for taking your time and grant an exclusive insight – maybe I´ll do it and board a flight soon … see you.

Review of Mat 12

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 200.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

Unknown keel type

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 2.55 - 2.65 meter (8.37 - 8.67 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Mat 12 is 1.96, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 8.0 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Mat 12 is about 271 kg/cm, alternatively 1519 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 271 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1519 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Family says video withheld from them shows police force killed son — not drugs.

A mother whose son was having a seizure in his Tennessee apartment said in a federal lawsuit that police and paramedics subjected the 23-year-old to “inhumane acts of violence” instead of treating him, then covered up their use of deadly force.

The death of Austin Hunter Turner was one of more than 1,000 nationally that an investigation led by The Associated Press identified as happening after police officers used physical force or weapons that were supposed to stop, but not kill, people.

The lawsuit, filed this week in federal court, came after AP reporters shared police body-camera video they had unearthed with Turner’s parents, who didn’t know it existed.

The family of Austin Hunter Turner (center) claimed in a federal lawsuit that police and paramedics subjected him to “inhumane acts of violence” while responding to a medical emergency before his death in 2017.

That footage made the family doubt the official conclusion that a drug overdose killed their son.

Citing the AP’s reporting and many of the details it disclosed, the lawsuit focused on how officers’ own video contradicted the police version of what happened inside Turner’s small apartment in the northeastern Tennessee city of Bristol.

The officers had said they physically restrained Turner and shocked him with a Taser because he was fighting paramedics who were trying to help him.

The lawsuit said that Turner was “treated as a suspect and not a patient facing a medical emergency” from the moment officers arrived. “Turner was not resisting arrest or being combative. He was not disobeying commands; he was having a seizure.”

Multiple messages left for Bristol Police Chief Matt Austin, Fire Chief Michael Carrier and Mayor Vince Turner were not returned Thursday and Friday.

The lawsuit accuses the city and several police officers and firefighters of violating Turner’s civil rights.

For Turner’s mother, Karen Goodwin, the lawsuit is a last chance at justice for a son everyone knew as Hunter.

Since that night in August 2017, she and her husband, Brian, believed police and blamed their son for his own death. Now she wants those who were there to be held accountable.

Body camera footage of police restraining Turner in his girlfriend's apartment on Aug. 29, 2017.

They should have recognized that her son was having a medical emergency, she said, and she’s angry because she believes they lied.

“We’ve always trusted the police,” Goodwin said. “We didn’t question authority, so when they told us he died of a drug overdose, we believed them.”

The case highlighted a central finding of the AP-led investigation: A lack of accountability permeates the justice system in the aftermath of fatal police encounters that don’t involve shootings.

From the patrol officers at the scene and their commanders to prosecutors and medical examiners, the system shields officers from scrutiny.

Some other deaths the investigation documented reflect another reality of policing in America: The fraying of the nation’s social safety net can thrust officers into violent situations with people who need mental or substance addiction treatment.

Police officers said they tased Turner because he was resisting them.

In Tennessee, it was hard to find an attorney.

Goodwin said she contacted 20 before a Nashville law firm agreed to take her case

Lawyers know they have high hurdles even to get a case to trial, including “qualified immunity,” which protects officers from lawsuits.

And this case was even more complicated. Lawsuits seeking monetary damages have statutes of limitations, which in cases like Turner’s are one year in Tennessee, according to Dominick Smith, one of the attorneys representing the mother.

Though Turner died nearly seven years ago, Goodwin’s attorneys believe the case involved a cover-up.

They argue that means the clock shouldn’t start until AP reporters shared the police video with the family in August 2023, as part of their investigation with FRONTLINE (PBS) and the Howard Centers for Investigative Journalism at the University of Maryland and Arizona State University.

Turner with his mother Karen Goodwin and her husband Brian in Bristol a week before his death.

A judge will decide whether the lawsuit can proceed, said Christopher Slobogin, director of Vanderbilt University Law School’s Criminal Justice Program.

If family members can show that a reasonable person could not have known how an injury or death happened at the time, he said, a judge could start the clock when they learned the full picture just under a year ago.

The defendants will likely argue that because the family has known about the death since 2017, the statute of limitations has expired.

“You look at what’s fair under the circumstances,” said Slobogin, an expert on Tennessee law who is not involved in the case.

The medical emergency began when Turner suddenly collapsed in his apartment.

His girlfriend called Goodwin and said she didn’t know whether he was breathing.

Goodwin said to call 911, then rushed over.

When she arrived, Goodwin found her son gasping for breath on the linoleum of his kitchen floor. She told paramedics he had a history of seizures.

Not long after, police officers and firefighters swarmed the apartment.

Turner's family decided to file the lawsuit after viewing the body camera footage of his death.

They thought Turner was resisting, but Goodwin said that wasn’t the case — his body was jerking from the seizure.

The bodies of officers and firefighters mostly blocked the mother’s view, but she could hear them yelling at her son to stop resisting. An officer shocked him with a Taser.

The group pinned Turner face down on a recliner in what’s known as prone position, which can dangerously restrict breathing.

A few minutes later, he was strapped to a stretcher, again face down.

He stopped breathing before they got him to the Bristol Regional Medical Center.

In his autopsy report, the medical examiner said Turner died of “Multiple Drug Toxicity” and cited Suboxone, a drug used to wean people off opioids, and the psychoactive chemical in marijuana.

The medical examiner also repeated the official police version of events.

Brian and Karen Goodwin at a memorial for motorcycle riders that includes the name of Turner along US Highway 421.

AP’s investigation found that the medical officials who determine the official cause of police restraint deaths frequently did not link them to force, instead blaming accidents, drug use or preexisting health problems.

Three experts who reviewed case records for the AP said Turner did not die of a drug overdose.

Instead, they said the Bristol police made critical errors that contributed to Turner’s death, including pinning him face down.

Goodwin said that, from the start, something didn’t seem right about that night.

Despite her doubts, for years Goodwin believed first responders did everything they could to save her son.

That changed after she watched the video.

Goodwin was stunned.

It struck her that officers appeared to ignore they had been dispatched to a medical call.

By the end, instead of rushing Turner away in an ambulance, police and paramedics spent six minutes recounting the violence.

The family of Austin Hunter Turner (center) claimed in a federal lawsuit that police and paramedics subjected him to “inhumane acts of violence” while responding to a medical emergency before his death in 2017.

Minnesota Yacht Club festival will return in 2025 with an added third day of music

The festival is set again for July 18-20 following a strong turnout in the St. Paul event’s inaugural year.

By Chris Riemenschneider

mat 12 yacht

The dates have been set for the Minnesota Yacht Club music festival’s return to St. Paul’s Harriet Island Regional Park in July 2025, and there’s already one glaring difference from its inaugural year: Three days are listed instead of two.

“Thanks to your support, we’re extending to THREE days,” festival organizers announced in social media posts Tuesday morning.

The days confirmed in the announcement are July 18-20, a Friday through a Sunday. This year’s MYC fell on the same weekend but only ran Friday and Saturday , with performers including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alanis Morissette, Gwen Stefani, Gary Clark Jr., Joan Jett and the Offspring.

There was little doubt the festival would be back for another year. It drew a near-capacity crowd of around 35,000 fans each day of its 2024 run, and — aside from some intermittently long concession lines — it earned relatively high marks from organizers and audience members alike.

“We were very happy with the inaugural festival this year,” MYC promoter Tim Sweetwood of C3 Presents, which put on the festival, said in a statement. “Our team has continued to work closely with Saint Paul city officials and collectively determined expanding into a third day made a lot of sense. We are thrilled to return with an all-new lineup July 18-20, 2025 and will continue to highlight the arts and people of Minnesota.”

Organizers have not yet offered more info on the second-year plans, including what kind of an impact the added third day will have on ticket prices. The only link included in Tuesday’s announcement was to pre-book rooms at hotels affiliated with the festival.

Fans can likely expect to pay about $100 more for the general admission passes for three days instead of two. Those started around $200 in early bird pricing for this past year’s festival before being bumped up to $255. The many different VIP options — $255-$1,395 for two-day passes in 2024 — will also go up exponentially with the extra day.

Texas’ C3 Presents specializes in multiday festivals such as Lollapalooza in Chicago, Austin City Limits, Boston Calling and New York’s Governors Ball. Those fests all last three days, too.

What typically happens with these festivals is: Early bird tickets go on sale in the fall or winter at discount prices without any of next year’s artists being named, then the music lineup gets announced in the winter or spring, and then tickets go on sale at their standard prices.

In other words, expect many more updates on MYC 2025 between now and next summer.
