“MOGAMBO was designed to meet the owner’s requirements and, specifically, to enter the charter market. The outside areas are the best I have seen for that purpose. The superyacht is very comfortable at sea and quite fast. And as always, the engineering is first class - typically German. MOGAMBO is a good looking vessel, and the exterior finish is superb!” Philip Walsh, Captain

The word MOGAMBO is of African origin and means “the Great.” It fits this superyacht, delivered in 2012, perfectly.

It needs an extraordinary approach…

…to succeed in the luxurious world of exclusive charter yachts. The experienced team of Owner, designer and shipyard accomplished this for MOGAMBO.

Nobiskrug - MOGAMBO YACHT

The superyacht appears slender,…

…long and strong with a slight masculine touch, emphasized by the two-tone paintwork – the hull in mid-grey and the decks in snow-white.

Nobiskrug - Superyacht MOGAMBO

It is the African angle…

…that forms the starting point for this superyacht that delicately combines classic warmth and ambiance with modern elegance, resulting in a sophisticated mix with a touch of glamour. And like her namesake, she too is aiming for adventure, setting out for remarkable journeys and supplying her guests every conceivable luxury.

Nobiskrug - MOGAMBO YACHT - Interior Reymond Langton Design

…not only cuts a splendid figure above and below deck but thanks to NOBISKRUG’s naval architecture the superyacht also fulfils high demands at sea.

Written by Mike Smith

On Tuesday the 30th of March 2010 Nobiskrug launched the newly finished hull of their 74m motor yacht Mogambo – hull number 782 from the shipyard. The finished hull of the yacht ran smoothly from the slipway into the River Eider within a few seconds.

Nobiskrug launches 74 m superyacht Mogambo

Presently, the 74 m superyacht Mogambo is to be moored at Nobiskrug’s pier in Germany. She will then be moved into the 160 m superyacht hall for her full interior outfitting, as well as the filling and final top-coating of the hull and superstructure. Delivery of the motor yacht Mogambo to her owner is planned for later in 2011, after sea trials.

Nobiskrug of Germany is currently building five significant mega yachts. A couple of the company’s more recent success are motor yachts Triple Seven and SIREN.

During yacht Mogambo’s launching ceremony an old tradition was followed. This consisted of the serving up of a good hearty soup in the shipbuilding hall for all the employees and subcontractors involved in the new build. Nobiskrug’s Managing Directors and the Project Manager, Mr Mark Velthaus, as well as the Owner’s Representative expressed their thanks for the trustful and successful cooperation in the building of the yacht.

Mogambo

Nobiskrug motor yacht Mogambo pictured in Norway post-refit

The 73.5 metre superyacht Mogambo has been spotted cruising the Norwegian Fjords after completing an extensive refit project at Feadship.

The Nobiskrug-built yacht spent eight months at Feadship’s De Vries Makkum shipyard in the Netherlands before departing and heading north at the beginning of June. She dropped anchor in Bergen on June 10 and spent some time exploring the Nærøyfjorden area before heading further north to the mountainous region of Geiranger-Herdalen Landskapsvernområde.

During her stint at Feadship, work included a completely fresh paint job for her exterior as well as a renewal of her interiors, including the modernisation of crew areas and major upgrades to navigation equipment and AV/IT systems on board. The refit also included a re-conditioning of the yacht’s propulsion installations, doors and hatches, the blasting and painting of the underwatership and a revamp of the chilled water installation.

Mogambo was first delivered by German builder Nobiskrug in 2012 and checked into the Feadship facilities in October 2021 for her refit work. She has had the same North American owner since launch and is named after the 1953 film starring Clark Gable, Ava Gardner, and Grace Kelly.

Penned inside and out by Reymond Langton Design , Mogambo is constructed in steel and aluminium and is characterised by a two-tone silver and white superstructure, with a raked bow and modern lines. Her 1,698 GT interiors can accommodate up to 12 guests and 17 members of crew.

Each of her decks features al fresco entertaining spaces, including a hot tub on the top deck and a swimming platform at the stern for direct access to the water. The MCA-compliant superyacht is powered by twin MTU engines providing 4,720hp and a top speed of 17 knots.

Mogambo is the fourth largest yacht ever launched by Nobiskrug; other yachts in the fleet include the award-winning 80 metre Artefact .

The quaint Devon town where billionaire former Spurs owner has moored his £250m superyacht all summer

The former owner of Tottenham Hotspur FC has moored his £250 million superyacht in the middle of a town in Devon , leaving locals baffled.

Billionaire Joe Lewis, who was recently sentenced for insider trading charges in the US, has moored his giant blue superyacht in Dartmouth for weeks after arriving in the UK tourist destination at the beginning of August.

The 322-foot (98m) luxury vessel Aviva, which the 87-year-old uses partly as a residence and partly as an office, arrived from Troon, Scotland, to the Devonshire coast around 5 August.

The yacht has been pictured dominating the entire landscape of Dartmouth, overshadowing smaller yachts that are docked in the harbour next to the small seaside that lines the shore.

The scenic coastal town of Dartmouth, situated on the banks of the River Dart, has a rich maritime heritage and boasts independent locally-owned boutiques as well as beaches such as Castle Cove and Sugary Cove that attract hundreds of visitors to the small town.

The town holds an annual regatta, one of the oldest events of its kind in the country, that invites yachts, keelboats, sports boats and dinghies to the sporting event held in its port. This year’s event took place on 29 to 31 August while Lewis’ yacht was also moored in the area.

The luxury yacht Aviva , belonging to billionaire Joe Lewis, pictured here by Butler's Wharf in London

The giant yacht is hard to miss, leaving some residents perplexed as to why such a huge boat would want to be moored in a small English town that does not offer the same tropical weather that most superyachts are spotted in .

“I love this town and I wouldn’t want to do it down but why does a billionaire want to stay here for the whole of August instead of the Caribbean or the Med?” one lifelong resident told The Sun .

"It’s just a huge floating gin palace, miles bigger than anything else in the harbour. We’ve seen his crew come and go in a tender but I don’t know if he’s even onboard – nobody’s heard anything,” they added.

It is unclear if Lewis is present on the superyacht while it is being anchored in Devon .

Aviva was built in 2017, can host 16 guests, 25 crew members, and also features an indoor padel tennis court, according to SuperYachtFan .

The superyacht had not been spotted around British waters until recently, as Aviva, along with the owner’s private jet, was put up as collateral for bail after the British billionaire’s arrest in July 2023 for insider trading charges in the US.

Dartmouth, a popular tourist destination in the UK, usually only hosts smaller yachts in its harbour

Lewis was not allowed to set foot on the vessel until he paid a $5m fine after his sentencing in April for sharing business secrets with friends, which also includes three years of prison.

After leaving its base in Malta following the sentencing, Aviva set sail to cities along Albania’s coast as well as the Greek island Zakynthos and Kalamata in southern Greece, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Along with the padel tennis court, the yacht also includes a helipad, spa and a cinema, and was ranked among the world’s 25-most valuable superyachts shortly after its launch, the outlet added.

Aviva is also home to one of the most expensive art collections in the world, with original works by Picasso and Matisse aboard the yacht.

Lewis made his fortune primarily in foreign exchange and investment before buying Tottenham Hotspur in 1991. He is ranked 38th among the UK’s wealthiest people, according to the Sunday Times Rich List , with a net worth of £5.3bn.

SKYFALL is currently for sale for an asking price of $29.5m

Superyacht SKYFALL is as iconic as the James Bond movie it shares its name with. Owned by an American real estate developer, the 190-foot motor yacht features a distinctive silhouette and a boatload of stand-out amenities including a panoramic sky lounge, a split-level owner’s cabin and a helipad that converts into a basketball court. As well as being highly appealing to owners, she’s a successful charter yacht that’s renowned for her ability to entertain.

SKYFALL was built by American luxury motor yacht builder Trinity Yachts in 2010 for the shipyard’s owner. “SKYFALL is the most exquisite superyacht ever delivered by Trinity Yachts and is a shining example of American craftsmanship and pride,” says Frank Grzeszczak Sr of FGI Yacht Group. “In a market where yachts of her size are rarely this versatile, SKYFALL stands out as a unique offering. With a Bahamas-friendly draft, aluminum construction, speeds exceeding 20 knots, a flexible seven-cabin layout—including a bi-level primary suite—and expansive lounges, SKYFALL sets herself apart from others in her class.”

The current owner bought her in 2018 from an American automobile tycoon and completed a full refit in 2020, including elegant, timeless interiors by designers Patrick Knowles and Even Marshall. Now, as the owner builds a new, larger, 270-foot yacht with an Italian shipyard, they’ve reluctantly put SKYFALL up for sale.

As SKYFALL enters the market with FGI , the owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, gives Forbes an exclusive look at life onboard the yacht and reveals his favorite experiences and spaces, as well as his top tips for superyacht ownership.

What initially captivated you about SKYFALL?

Owner: SKYFALL is an iconic yacht. She really has the best of all worlds. She has semi displacement which means she is fast and efficient. She also has a shallow draft that allows her to get into anchorages or ports that other similar sized boats can’t even try to get into. In the Bahamas, for example, it is typical for SKYFALL to be anchored close to shore while other 60-meter (190-foot) boats are a mile or more offshore.

What are your favourite memories onboard SKYFALL?

We have had a lot of fun with family and friends on SKYFALL. The list of great memories onboard is quite long. The bridge deck outdoor dining table is where we always try to have meals unless the weather is very bad. We have had a lot of great discussions with family and friends around that table that will last a lifetime. We also like that the sundeck that has two hot tubs with plenty of space, which is where we have pre-dinner canapes every night while we watch the sun set wherever we might be.

One thing that often grabs people’s attention is the basketball goal that also is a helideck on the sundeck. We have had a lot of competitive games of basketball on sundeck, sometimes with a number of spectators watching from afar.

The top deck of SKYFALL features a basketball court, helipad, pool, hot tub and dining area

What is your favourite space onboard?

The sky lounge is group favorite. It has twin 80-inch TVs, so there isn’t a bad place in the sky lounge to view a game.

Please talk us through the owner’s cabin and how you designed it to suit your lifestyle.

The owner’s cabin on SKYFALL is exactly what we wanted on a boat. The master bed faces the bow with large windows which means we get to wake up every morning to an amazing view. The sitting area is perfect for getting a break from guests when we just need some time to ourselves. The suite also has ‘His and Hers’ separate baths and closets, which is a requirement for us. My wife and I always say that the key to a long and happy marriage is separate bathrooms and closets.

The office in the master suite is a welcome retreat for me so I can get work done privately without being disturbed, and more importantly, without waking up my wife.

A cabin onboard SKYFALL superyacht

Where are your favourite places to visit around the world?

It has always been non-negotiable for our family that we spend New Year’s together in Saint Bart’s on the boat. In early spring, she spends a few weeks in the Bahamas, and then typically we send her over to the Med for the summer season. She then comes back for a quick yard period in the fall, does the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, and then makes her way back to the Caribbean.

What makes SKYFALL such a successful charter yacht?

The feedback from charter guests has been that this is a great multi-generational boat. We have all the fun toys for kids, and lots of relaxing spaces for adults. Three generations in a family can travel together and have a great trip for different reasons. With the multitude of large beds, it is also a great boat for several couples to travel together.

Interiors are elegant and timeless

What first inspired you to become a yacht owner?

Our family had been chartering yachts for about 12 years. More and more we found ourselves wanting to spend time on the water. We had been loosely talking about buying a yacht when we started attending the annual Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. I’m not an impulse buyer, but when we found a boat that we thought would work for our lifestyle, we knew (or rather, my wife knew) that was the boat for us.

What does yacht ownership give you that villa or a hotel ownership couldn’t?

We often talk about how owning a yacht allows you to basically have a home nearly anywhere in the world. We like new places, and we like to explore, but we like to have a familiar home base to come back to at the end of a long day. A yacht gives you the advantage of being in the Med in the summer and the Caribbean in the winter sleeping in the same bed every night.

Guests can enjoy indoor and outdoor dining areas

Why have you decided to put SKYFALL on the sales market – and why now?

We are building a new boat, and it is time to let this one go. We are sad to part with her, but we hope she will find a new family that will create many new memories on her as we have.

What would be your biggest piece of advice to the next owner of SKYFALL?

Have fun with her. That’s what she is for. This boat loves to be used so if you have a destination in mind, she’s ready to go.

The decks have plenty of space for entertainment and relaxation

Want to be the new owner of SKYFALL? Here’s how

SKYFALL is currently for sale for an asking price of $29,500,000. Interested parties should contact the broker, Frank Grzeszczak Sr, Founder & President at FGI Yacht Group , who says: “Simply put, SKYFALL is the finest American superyacht available today. The price has recently been adjusted to $29,500,000, reflecting the seller's commitment to securing a fair price for this extraordinary vessel.”

Billionaire ex-Tottenham owner's massive superyacht labelled an 'eyesore' by Dartmouth residents

The colossal 322ft Aviva, owned by former Spurs owner Joe Lewis, has been anchored in the picturesque town since early August

Locals have branded a superyacht owned by billionaire former Spurs owner Joe Lewis an "absolute eyesore" after it moored in their Devon town a month ago.

The massive £250 million, 322ft Aviva, which serves as the magnate's floating home and office complete with a full-size padel tennis court, has been anchored off Dartmouth since early August. The vessel embarked from Troon, Scotland, docking around August 5.

It was one of its few UK appearances since being detained by US courts for over a year while Mr Lewis was embroiled in "brazen" insider trading allegations. The 87-year-old avoided prison time, due to poor health, but was handed a £3.8million fine and a three-year probation period, the Express reports.

  • Plans for new 8,000-home Devon town to go on show
  • Sports pitch moved to make way for major Devon relief road

Yet, the yacht's prolonged presence has irked some Dartmouth locals, with Michael Rowland condemning the yacht as "an absolute eyesore" and Geraldine Wood criticising it as "totally out of place in beautiful Dartmouth".

A local told The Sun : "I love this town and I wouldn't want to do it down but why does a billionaire want to stay here for the whole of August instead of the Caribbean or the Med? It's been raining constantly for the last few weeks. I guess he's here for the regatta that starts this week but who knows how long he'll stay.

"It's just a huge floating gin palace, miles bigger than anything else in the harbour. We've seen his crew come and go in a tender but I don't know if he's even onboard - nobody's heard anything."

The Aviva was built in 2017 and can sleep 16 people, with a top speed of 20 knots and an environmentally friendly hybrid electric propulsion system. Last month, t he vessel was spotted alongside two other superyachts, the Elysian and the Constance , on the river Dart.

Rescuers racing to reach Spirit of Mateship yacht in distress off NSW coastline, 185 kilometres east of Nowra

A major rescue mission has been launched to retrieve two people stuck on board a 19-metre yacht roughly 185 kilometres off the New South Wales coastline.

NSW Police said officers were informed of the yacht's distress call at about 1pm on Monday.

What's next?

Rescue teams are expected to rendezvous with the vessel early on Wednesday morning.

A major rescue mission has been launched off the New South Wales South Coast, following a distress beacon being activated on the Spirit of Mateship yacht.

The distress beacon was switched on about 185 kilometres east of Nowra.

NSW Police said officers were notified of the distress call at about 1pm on Monday.

"Officers from the Marine Area Command and Australian Defence Force were notified by the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre a 19-metre yacht had activated a distress beacon," NSW Police said in a statement.

A spokesman for the Australian Defence Force said that two people were on board the yacht.

On Tuesday night, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said it was battling up to five-metre seas and 70 to 90 kph winds, with the weather conditions preventing rescue efforts from taking place on Monday night.

A RAAF C-130J Hercules aircraft stayed on the scene until 9pm after leaving from Richmond, but was forced to return.

"HMAS Arunta arrived to the scene at 6pm AEST this evening, with HMAS Canberra on route also arriving at 11pm AEST," AMSA said in a statement. "NSW Water Police vessel Nemesis is expected to arrive on scene about 2am AEST tomorrow [Tuesday] morning."

The rescue operation is due to begin early on Wednesday, but whether or not it can begin then will depend on the weather.

The Spirit of Mateship is believed to have sustained a mechanical issue and is taking on water.

Yacht a Sydney to Hobart race veteran

The Spirit of Mateship has raced in several Sydney to Hobart yacht races, starting in 2013.

Ahead of its inaugural Sydney to Hobart race, then-prime minister Tony Abbott officially launched its name Sprit of Mateship in honour of its crew, made up of injured ADF personnel.

Speaking at an event at the National Maritime Museum in Sydney before the race, Mr Abbott said how proud he was to be part of its launch.

A group of men work on the deck of a yacht.

The yacht in distress, named Spirit of Mateship, previously raced in a number of competitions, including the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.  ( ABC: 7.30 )

"It is really good to be here at Mates 4 Mates and to help launch the Spirit of Mateship," he said.

"We owe it to the members and former members of our armed forces to stand by them in their time of need and Mates 4 Mates are people who are there for each other in tough times."

NSW Police said there were no reports of injuries on board the yacht.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise confirms it will continue its $4 billion suit against Mike Lynch's estate after he died in a tragic yacht sinking

  • HPE says it will continue to pursue its $4 billion lawsuit against Mike Lynch's estate.
  • Lynch, along with his daughter and top attorney, died when his superyacht sank in August.
  • Lynch and the company had been involved in a nine-year legal battle over the sale of Autonomy.

Insider Today

Hewlett Packard Enterprise said Monday that it wouldn't drop its lawsuit against the late tech tycoon Mike Lynch 's estate.

The news came two weeks after Lynch died in a tragic yacht sinking off the coast of Sicily. Lynch, along with seven others, including his daughter and his top attorney , drowned when his superyacht, Bayesian, sank.

Before his death, Lynch had been embroiled in a long legal battle with the company. Hewlett-Packard bought his software company, Autonomy, in 2011 and later accused Lynch of valuing it inaccurately. Hewlett-Packard broke into two companies — Hewlett Packard Enterprise and HP — in 2015.

An HPE spokesperson said Monday that the company would continue to pursue the lawsuit, which seeks $4 billion in damages.

Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who survived the yacht tragedy, is expected to inherit her husband's fight, Fortune reported .

"In 2022, an English High Court judge ruled that HPE had substantially succeeded in its civil fraud claims against Dr Lynch and Mr Hussain," the spokesperson said Monday in a statement to The Associated Press .

Related stories

"A damages hearing was held in February 2024 and the judge's decision regarding damages due to HPE will arrive in due course," they added. "It is HPE's intention to follow the proceedings through to their conclusion."

The Monday statement came after the group initially sent a statement to several media outlets declining to comment on legal matters in light of the tragedy.

"We do not think it appropriate to comment on legal matters in these tragic circumstances," a spokesperson previously said, per Fortune . "We're saddened by this tragic event and our thoughts are with the families and friends of all the victims."

The yacht sank just weeks after Lynch and Stephen Chamberlain, his former vice president of finance, were acquitted by a San Francisco jury in June of all criminal charges related to Autonomy's sale.

The indictment accused Lynch and Chamberlain of falsifying financial documents, lying to auditors and regulators, and suppressing people who criticized Autonomy's financial practices.

A representative of HPE did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.

Correction: September 3, 2024 — An earlier version of this story misstated when Lynch and Chamberlain were acquitted of criminal charges. They were acquitted weeks before the yacht sank, not weeks after. An earlier version also misstated the timeline of the lawsuit. It has been in process for nine years, not 13. The story has also been updated to clarify that Hewlett Packard Enterprise is pursuing the lawsuit against Lynch's estate. HPE broke off from Hewlett-Packard in 2015.
