Because life's too short to stay home …, on the rock river in illinois, from the town of oregon, visitors follow in black hawk's footsteps..

Black Hawk on the Rock River.

© Beth Gauper

In the northwest Illinois town of Oregon, a 48-foot concrete figure gazes over a river valley, arms folded.

Over the years, the valley has been home to many ambitious men. Abraham Lincoln joined the militia here. John Deere forged the first steel plow. Ronald Reagan got his first lifeguard job.

Chief Black Hawk, the man who inspired the gigantic blufftop statue, also had an ambition: to keep this beautiful valley for his own people.

In 1804, four Sauk men ceded it in exchange for $1,000 per year in goods, and in 1829, the government kicked out the Indians and sold the land to settlers.

In 1832, Black Hawk tried to reclaim the land, sparking a "war" that ended in the slaughter of his people.

The debacle made a romantic figure of the doomed Black Hawk.

"Rock River was a beautiful country," he said. "I loved my towns, my cornfields, and the home of my people. I fought for it."

Today, banners on Oregon street lights feature Black Hawk's face, and painted tipis can be found in and around town.

Across the river, the statue known as Black Hawk was created between 1908 and 1910 as the Eternal Indian by Chicago sculptor Lorado Taft. Now it is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Visitors can walk through the town's entire history in Lowden State Park, on the blufftop where Lorado Taft founded the Eagle's Nest Art Colony in 1898. Today, it's a field campus for Northern Illinois University.

Oregon makes a fun getaway any time for the three state parks that surround it and for the Rock River, which flows from Wisconsin's Horicon Marsh to the Mississippi at Rock Island and has been named a national water trail.

Excursions on the Pride of Oregon paddlewheeler take tourists upstream. On the east side of the river, Black Hawk rises above the treetops, and on the west side, passenger see the stone turrets of a castle.

The courthouse in Oregon.

It's a Tudor-style manor with 25 rooms and four secret passages, built between 1928 and 1930 by Walter Strong, owner and publisher of the Chicago Daily News. Visits to another publisher's castle — William Randolph Hearst's famous estate in San Simeon, Calif. — inspired it.

Today, the Stronghold Center is a Presbyterian retreat complex, open to the public for tours or overnight group lodgings and at the annual Olde English Faire in October, a gathering of knights and ladies and jesters and jousters, with medieval music and games.

For excursions downstream, outfitters rent canoes and kayaks for visits to Castle Rock State Park or Grand Detour, home of the John Deere Historic Site .

In 1838, the Vermont-born blacksmith figured out how to make a plow that would cut through the dense Illinois soil. After a move to Moline in 1848, his business became the giant farm-equipment manufacturer, still named for John Deere.

Dixon is just around the bend from Grand Detour. It's the boyhood home of Ronald Reagan, who safeguarded swimmers from the banks of the Rock River. The Ronald Reagan Trail includes his first home in Dixon and stops in 12 other northwest Illinois towns.

A third state park is seven miles west of Oregon. White Pines Forest State Park is a lovely oasis of pine forest, creeks and rock outcroppings amid the rolling farm fields.

In spring, the park's trails are lined with wildflowers; in fall, the park is cloaked in bright reds, oranges and golds.

There are inns in Oregon, but the park's White Pines Inn is a special place to stay, with a log lodge and cabins built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Its inviting restaurant is famous for its Paul Bunyan buffet on Sundays and serves such classics as chicken pot pie, peach cobbler and apple dumplings. There's a dinner theater, too.

In town, visitors can follow the Trail of Painted Tipis, each created by a different artist, from late April to mid-November.

Stronghold Cente in Oregon.

There are a few antiques stores to visit downtown. Restaurants include the '50s-style Jay's Drive-In , which serves caramel-apple shakes and "the best butter bun burgers around."

Oregon is only two hours from Chicago, but bistros and boutiques haven't reached this town of 3,700. Just as well, because a down-home style suits such a historic place.

The Riverboat Cruise In Illinois You Never Knew Existed

St. Charles Paddlewheel Riverboats offers scenic and budget-friendly cruises along the Fox River in Illinois.

Written by

Cruises are not just for the ocean, and Illinois proves it. While you may be familiar with the Spirit of Peoria or one of many Mississippi River cruises, there is one tucked away in a far northwest suburb of Chicago you don't want to miss.

You can fit this into a day trip and spend a lovely afternoon meandering the Fox River. Keep scrolling for all the details:

Founded in 1945, St. Charles Paddlewheel Riverboats offers a cruise along one of the state's most scenic rivers. You'll want to have your camera ready for the entirety of this trip.

alt

Cruises depart from Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles where there is also mini golf, a pool, boat rentals, and a native garden. You could make a full day of relaxing and playing at this gorgeous park.

alt

The cost is $8.50 for adults while children under age 15 may board for just $7. Parking is free with your cruise, making this one of the most budget-friendly day trips in Illinois.

alt

During the summer, cruise times are available each day but no reservations are made. Guests are expected to show up 15 minutes early for public cruises.

alt

During the fall, spring, and winter, weekend cruises are available, but be sure to bundle up. No matter when you go, cruises typically start between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

alt

Occasionally, heavy rain fall causes river levels to rise, preventing cruises from taking place. Always check the company's website for any updates.

The riverboat journys take just under an hour and include commentary from the boat captain who points out interesting sites and gives tid bits of history about the area. Those who love to learn will be especially intrigued.

alt

Patrons can even book private events such as birthday parties, class reunions, weddings, and more. Boats accommodate about 100 people all together.

alt

Take your gals, your whole family, or just that special someone on a cruising experience they won't soon forget. Wonder and natural beauty await on the Fox River.

alt

St. Charles Paddlewheel Riverboats is located at 2 North Avenue in Saint Charles, and you can get more information on its website or Facebook page .

A Spontaneous, 24-Hour Trip To Chicago, Illinois, Created A Core Memory

When I turned 40 , I made a promise to myself that this would be my best year yet. I would get reacquainted with the "me" that existed before becoming a partner, mom, and coworker; I would tap into my truest self and embrace the awesome and wise woman I am. I would travel to the places I write about, alone and with my kids. I would get out of my own way; making "yes, and" my mantra and see where that got me.

It got me to Chicago, Illinois. To a P!INK concert at Soldier Field with one of my favorite people in the world .

My spontaneous "yes and" mindset was put to the test a few weeks ago, when I got a text on a random weekday asking if I'd be up for seeing P!INK the following weekend in Chicago. I thought about it for less than a minute; I was in. I found a cheap (and direct!) flight from CVG to Midway, and Jackie used her budget traveling stealth to secure us a room at the Congress Hotel , a historic hotel right on Michigan Avenue just minutes from the stadium.

alt

Packing for such a quick trip was a breeze; I was able to fit everything into a sleek backpack. I'd never flown into Chicago before; the waters of Lake Michigan are a brilliant cobalt blue and the cityscape -- with its striking architecture and iconic attractions -- is breathtaking. My 10-year-old is super into baseball right now and was delighted at this photo I snapped flying over the White Sox stadium:

alt

I landed around 3 p.m. and took an Uber to the hotel. After a quick shower, we decided to make the most of a beautiful Saturday afternoon and take in the (iconic) views along Lake Shore Drive. Chicago is an incredibly walkable town and it's easy to get around on foot or with public transportation, which kept this trip extremely affordable, especially as we split the bill (and our concert tickets were just $40).

alt

The concert itself was awesome - if you ever get the chance to see P!INK, do it. She put on an incredible show that brought me back to high school in all the best ways. More importantly, though, if you ever get the opportunity to drop everything and rendezvous with a lovely friend for a night in the city, do it. This kind of spontaneous travel makes way for the kind of memories that last a lifetime.

alt

Writing for Only In Your State has awakened a curiosity about the world for which I'm incredibly grateful. Travel fuels my soul and makes me a more inspired writer and better human. The perspective that comes with age has let me embrace a "Yes and" mantra and the opportunities that come my way. Adventures are all around us and sometimes, a spontaneous getaway with a friend is all you need to be reminded of just how awesome life is.

Here’s The Story Behind The Massive Paul Bunyan Statue In Illinois

The Paul Bunyon statue in Atlanta, Illinois, is a quirky roadside attraction on Route 66, originally created for a hotdog stand.

I absolutely love cruising on Route 66 because it’s filled with quirky roadside attractions and surprises along the way – it’s all part of what makes driving down the Mother Road a whole lotta fun! And perhaps one of the quirkiest roadside attractions in Illinois (well, in my opinion) is a very atypical Paul Bunyan statue with a story behind it. Located in the tiny city of Atlanta , this is one attraction you can’t help but notice and want to stop at. Read on to learn more about this massive Paul Bunyan statue in Illinois.

Located in central Illinois, Atlanta is a tiny city with a population of under 2,100. If you've ever traveled along Route 66, you've probably driven right through the heart of this town.

alt

And maybe you've even stopped in Atlanta upon seeing this unusual Paul Bunyan statue. It's a popular stop for Route 66 travelers passing through town, after all.

alt

If you have stopped to take a photo of this roadside attraction, you might have thought, "Why is Paul Bunyan holding a hot dog?" Well, there's an explanation for that.

alt

This Paul Bunyon statue, with the last name spelled with an "o" instead of an "a," towers 19 feet and holds a hot dog. He was originally created in 1966 for a hotdog stand known as "Bunyon's" located in Cicero, Illinois.

alt

Typically, a Paul Bunyan Statue is seen holding an ax. But that's not the case with this Paul Bunyon on Route 66! Used as an advertisement for the hot dog establishment, this imposing statue holds a giant hot dog in his hands instead.

alt

Unfortunately, the Bunyon's hot dog stand shut its doors in 2002. In 2003, Paul Bunyon was moved to Atlanta where it's been a popular attraction ever since.

alt
