Solar catamaran builder Silent Yachts is marking the logical evolution of boating and global explorer yachting with its new superyacht, the Silent 120 Explorer. The new project, which features powerful styling and interior design by Marco Casali, also offers owners the chance to make the most of their adventure cruising itineraries with space for two of the latest must-have toys for remote voyaging – an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for heli-cruising, and a submarine for underwater discovery.

The 36.74-metre Silent 120 Explorer, the first of which is currently in build and due for launch in 2024, features a 13.85-metre beam and a volume of 499 gross tonnes to offer extended cruising at 6-8 knots in economical mode, or up to 16 knots at full power. The supercat also heralds the next step in solar-powered cruising, with 40kWp (kilowatt-peak) panels providing enough energy to cover the yacht’s hotel loads as well as offering significant fossil-free cruising autonomy, with carefully selected range-extender generators in addition to the 800kW lithium-ion batteries driving highly efficient 340kW e-motors, giving unlimited-miles cruising potential.

The Silent 120 Explorer offers her future owners more than just a technologically and environmentally advanced luxury explorer platform with potentially unlimited range – the catamaran hull form combined with compact electric propulsion units offers significant space that enables the SILENT 120 Explorer to carry both a revolutionary eVTOL aircraft and an all-electric two-person submarine, in addition to the usual tenders and toys demanded on a superyacht.

Silent Yachts partnership with VRCO, designers and manufacturers of the Xcraft XP4 eVTOL aircraft, marks the first time a yacht builder and an aircraft manufacturer have collaborated, with the XP4 being customised to match the interiors of the Silent 120 Explorer. The XP4 can be landed on the roof of the Silent 120 Explorer, where large solar panels will slide outboard to port and starboard to reveal a touch-and-go landing pad.

The XP4, which is due for certification in 2024, offers convenient aerial personal transportation for up to four people, and is designed with an array of safety features including detection and avoidance technology, a ballistic parachute, and low- altitude crash prevention systems. In addition to utilising technologies such as nanomaterials and hydrogen-based range extension, the XP4 can not only be charged from the Silent 120 Explorer’s solar panels but can also deliver power from its own battery to the yacht as a back-up power source. The collaboration not only extends the remote cruising profile of the Silent 120 Explorer, but also marks a real advancement in carbon-responsible travel.

The U-Boat Worx NEMO submarine offers diving to 100 metre depths for two people in an all-electric package whose footprint is smaller than two jet-skis. The NEMO features the trademark acrylic pressure globe that gives pilot and passenger a breathtaking view of the depths, while the Manta control interface is both easy to learn and easy to operate.

Offering up to eight hours of autonomy, speeds underwater of up to 3 knots and positive buoyancy for automatic resurfacing in the unlikely event of an issue, the NEMO really does open up new frontiers for exploration, further made possible by the capabilities of the mother ship. The Silent 120 Explorer’s exceptional volume and deck space means owners will have two options for carrying their submarine – either in the port hull’s tender garage or on the main deck next to the pool.

“The trend is for bigger yachts and more luxury, more comfort, more water toys and more possibilities,” says Michael Köhler, founder and CEO of Silent Yachts. “In the Silent 120 Explorer we designed a boat that is bigger in volume although not in length, and bigger gives the opportunity to store more of these toys.”

“We build catamarans, which means more beam and more space,” he continues. “We also build our boats with solar power and electric propulsion, and that means we don’t have to give a lot of space to an engine room, which means we gain room for things like a gym or extra tender storage. Finally, the extra beam of the catamaran form means the roof can accommodate an eVTOL aircraft. We can plug it in on board and it will be recharged in a couple of hours.”

New Silent 120 Cat Has Airplane, Submarine

' src=

Silent Yachts has just taken the idea of adventure or explorer yachts to an entirely new level by announcing that its new 120 Explorer will have both a vertical takeoff and landing airplane and a personal submarine. The all-electric powered catamaran also will have trans-oceanic capabilities and virtually unlimited range.

The plane, an eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) named the XP4, is made by the British startup VRCO. It can hold four people, cruise at 160 knots, and fly for an hour. Large solar panels on the yacht’s roof slide out to port and starboard to open a touch-and-go landing pad for the plane.

The submarine, a Nemo from the Dutch builder U-Boat Worx, holds two people and can dive down to 328 feet below the surface. It has a top speed of 3 knots, and can stay underwater for up to eight hours. Owners can store it on the Silent 120 Explorer either on the aft deck next to the swimming pool (oh, your yacht doesn’t have a swimming pool?) or in one of two tender garages.

silent yacht submarine

The new Silent 120 is scheduled to be launched in 2024. It’s 120 feet long with a 45’ 4” beam and it displaces 490 gross tons. It uses a series of 40-kWp solar panels to charge an 800-kWh lithium-ion battery bank. That, turn, powers two 340-kW electric motors, producing a top speed of 16 knots. The cat’s most efficient speed is 8 knots.

The electric power produces no emissions, virtually no noise, and requires minimal maintenance. It also does not take up as much room inside the yacht as a diesel or gasoline system would, opening up more interior space for things like tender garages or toy storage.

“The trend is for bigger yachts and more luxury, more comfort,  more water toys and more possibilities,” said Michael Köhler, Silent Yachts founder and CEO.

Silent, an Austrian company, makes seven models of electric-powered catamarans, from 60 to 120 feet, in yards in Italy and Thailand. The interior and exterior of the new 120 Explorer were designed by Marco Casali, who has run his own firm, Too Design, in Rome since 2004; he’s one of the most active designers in the large yacht field. Silent Yachts has created a new all-electric powered silent vessel for the ultimate toy lover.

Silent-Yachts  has unveiled new images of the 120 ft (36.74-meter) Silent 120 Explorer yacht. The impressive flagship solar catamaran can create enough energy to power the yacht and all its appliances onboard.

The yacht has taken the idea of adventure or explorer yachts to an entirely new level by including a vertical takeoff, landing airplane, and personal submarine. The all-electric powered catamaran also will have trans-oceanic capabilities and virtually unlimited range.

The first Silent 120 Explorer yacht is being built and is expected to launch in 2024. The aluminum Silent 120 yacht has an expansive interior volume but remains under 500 gross tons with powerful custom styling and interior design by Marco Casali, who has run his firm, Too Design, in Rome since 2004. Casali is recognized as one of the most active designers in the large yacht field.

“The trend is for bigger yachts and more luxury, more comfort, more water toys and more possibilities,” said Michael Köhler, founder, and CEO of Silent Yachts in a press release. “In the SILENT 120 Explorer we designed a boat that is bigger in volume although not in length, and bigger gives the opportunity to store more of these toys. We build catamarans, which means more beam and more space. We also build our boats with solar power and electric propulsion, and that means we don’t have to give a lot of space to an engine room, which means we gain room for things like a gym or extra tender storage. Finally, the extra beam of the catamaran form means the roof can accommodate an eVTOL aircraft. We can plug it in on board and it will be recharged in a couple of hours.”

The Silent 120 Explorer design is complete, with the first hull featuring a swimming pool on the aft deck and grassy areas for walking dogs on the side decks (oh, your yacht doesn’t have a swimming pool or grass lawn?). In addition, the solar hardtop is designed to slide out in two sections revealing a touch-and-go helipad, and the upper sun deck can be used for sunbathing when not in use.

The submarine, a Nemo from the Dutch builder U-Boat Worx, holds two people and can dive 328 feet below the surface. It has a top speed of 3 knots and can stay underwater for up to eight hours. Owners can store it on the Silent 120 Explorer either on the aft deck next to the swimming pool or in one of two tender garages.

The 36.74-meter vessel features a 13.85-meter beam and an astonishing volume of 499 gross tons to offer extended cruising at 6-8 knots in economical mode or up to 16 knots at full power. The supercat also heralds the next step in solar-powered cruising, with 40 kWp (kilowatt-peak) panels providing enough energy to cover the yacht’s hotel loads (thanks in part to a complicated and highly efficient systems design) as well as offering significant fossil-free cruising autonomy, with carefully selected range-extender generators in addition to the 800kW lithium-ion batteries driving highly efficient 340 kW e-motors, giving unlimited-miles cruising potential.

The electric power produces no emissions, virtually no noise, and requires minimal maintenance. It also takes up less room inside the yacht than a diesel or gasoline system would, opening up more interior space for things like tender garages or toy storage.

“The trend is for bigger yachts and more luxury, more comfort, more water toys, and more possibilities,” said Köhler.

Silent Yachts, an Austrian company, makes seven models of electric-powered catamarans in yards from 60 to 120 feet in Italy and Thailand.

There's a huge problem with the ultra-wealthy's 'superyacht' fascination — and this new boat could help fix it

There was a 75% increase in superyacht sales from 2020 to 2021.

For thousands of years, boats and ships have used clean wind energy to sail from port to port. Wind, by the way, is created by uneven heating of the Earth's surface from the sun.

Now, Silent-Yachts, an Austrian company specializing in luxury, solar-powered vessels, thinks it's time to skip the middleman.

The Silent 120 Explorer is a solar-powered superyacht that comes with optional electric aircraft and submarines.

Silent-Yachts

Silent-Yachts set out to make luxury yachting more sustainable by "minimizing … impact on the marine environment." To accomplish this, the business offers a wide range of solar yachts, as well as a solar speedboat, a tender, and a hybrid model yacht.

Since sunny seas are perfect boating weather, Silent-Yacht advertises each solar-powered vessel's " unlimited range " as an advantage over conventionally powered yachts. One of the company's solar-powered yachts has even crossed the Atlantic using solar energy most of the time.

The largest of Silent-Yachts' vessels, the Silent 120 Explorer , will be 120 feet long and come with plenty of toys aimed at the ultra-wealthy.

An eVTOL (Electric Vertical Take Off and Landing Vehicle) that can hold four people will land between solar panels that slide out of the way. The optional mini submarine will be able to dive around 330 feet and require less storage space than two jet skis .

The electric aircraft and submarine will both be charged by excess power from the superyacht's peak solar array.

Collaborations with VRCO , the engineering company building the electric aircraft, and U-Boat Worx , the designers of the two-person submarine, aren't the only things that set this ship apart.

The superyacht also features noiseless cruising, extra space, and reduced maintenance needs because it's electric. Those electric motors take up way less volume than a big engine room, run quietly, and have very few moving parts.

The Silent 120 Explorer can hold up to three generators for backup power, so even in stormy waters, intrepid seafarers and yacht owners alike can make it back to shore.

It's not cheap being green

Silent-Yachts claims it tried to keep prices comparable with more traditional catamarans, the two-hulled style of yacht the company builds.

The estimated price for the new Silent 120 is over $21 million, and that doesn't include add-ons like the submarine (the U-Boat Worx's NEMO sub starts at around $610,000 for a basic model) or eVTOL .

That said, fuel savings and low maintenance costs add up over time, and Silent-Yachts' long warranties — including eight years for its batteries, 25 years for its solar panels , and a lifetime for its electric motors — keep risk fairly low.

Of course, when it is time to replace a part, it shouldn't be too difficult. Silent-Yachts promises that swapping out outdated components like solar panels will be easy. Even if the billionaires buying solar-powered superyachts can afford to get a new one when the last one gets old, it's most sustainable to repair and retrofit what you already have.

There was a 75% increase in superyacht sales from 2020 to 2021, according to The Guardian .

The outlet also reports that some conventionally powered superyachts release 1,500 times more pollution than a family car annually.

As the pollution levels of the mega-rich come under scrutiny, many may be looking to get green (and we're not talking about cash). With more sustainable options like Silent-Yachts' solar-powered boats available, the wealthy can have their cake and eat it, too.

Boat International reports that the Silent 120 Explorer should be sea ready in 2024.

"Available in 24 meters or 27 meters, ROAM SHADOW is specifically designed to be a second yacht"

U-Boat Worx’s award-winning NEMO – the smallest and lightest submersible ever produced – is now available to buy as part of a combination package with 24-meter support vessel ROAM SHADOW. Pitched at a record starting price of just six million Euros, the package provides new and existing yacht owners the unique opportunity to access the world of expedition yachting at a fraction of the price of a superyacht.

The newly-launched ROAM SHADOW has a maximum speed of 22 knots and serves as the ultimate toy carrier. Its immense storage capacity includes a large open deck for inflatable outboard RIBs, landing craft, four jet skis and a submersible. Available in 24 meters or 27 meters, ROAM SHADOW is specifically designed to be a second yacht and prioritises functionality to support a mothership, with only crew accommodation.

ROAM SHADOW comes equipped with a crane for heavy lifting, including easy deployment of the 2,500 kg NEMO into the water. And ROAM SHADOW’s fully enclosed indoor hangar storage can convert into a gym, spa and wellness center.

Dutchcraft 56

"dutchcraft 56 provides storage for watersports gear and other items, on a scale that is practically unheard of in this yacht size category".

The spacious flybridge features a dining table, with seating that converts to a large sun pad to the rear. There is a wet bar and double-width seating at the navigation station. The main deck has a further dining table, wet bar, double-width navigation station seating, and large sun pads on the foredeck for relaxed lounging at anchor or a thrilling perspective when underway. In total, there is seating for up to 36 guests onboard.

The vast aft deck space by the waterline lends itself to all manner of uses, from fishing platform to socialising space to stowage place for toys and watercraft – even a NEMO. To the sides of this deck, two large benches conceal oversized locker units (6m x 1.65m and 3m x 1.65m) that provide storage for watersports gear and other items, on a scale that is practically unheard of in this yacht size category.

Approximately 16 full diving sets can be stored here, or any kind of watersports equipment from surfboards and SUPs to wakeboards and inflatable slides.

"LYNX support vessels are fit to carry all the toys, being able to take everything an owner might need – from his car, tender and submarine."

With their big deck and plentiful storage, LYNX’S YXT yachts are the right choice for owners who, for instance, want to take all their tenders, toys and extra staff along for the adventure without impacting the mother ship.

In this specific case, our support vessels are fit to carry all the toys, being able to take everything an owner might need – from his car, tender and submarine. We have therefore developed a special configuration for our vessels so that they can carry respectively and at owner’s choice 1 or 2 submarines on the YXT 24 and up to 3 submarines on the YXT 34.

Silent Yachts 120

"the new superyacht project, which is due to hit the water in 2024, has been designed with eco-friendly expedition in mind.".

The Silent 120 Explorer yacht has custom design at the heart of her philosophy, with the first hull featuring a swimming pool on the aft deck and grassy areas for walking dogs on her side decks. Her solar hardtop is also designed to slide out in two sections revealing a touch-and-go helipad. When not in use, the upper sun deck can be used for sunbathing.

The Explorer yacht offers her future owners the opportunity to travel further with a potentially unlimited range. She is equipped with solar panels on her roof, with the addition of back-up generators for fast running. As a result of this, she is able to cruise at a comfortable eight knots and can reach a top speed of 16 knots.
