skookum 45 sailboat

“Drakus” is a 47 foot flush decked staysail ketch designed by Edwin Monk Senior. The vessel was built and launched at Skookum Marine in Port Townsend, Washington in 1973.

The hull is all hand laid fiberglass and epoxy resin.Scantlings about 1″ + in turn of bilge to 3/8″ at deck joint. The hull has been fully insulated with foam bonded to outer hull with ~1/4″ fiberglass bonded to the inside. The insulation runs from the deck level to just below the waterline.

The decks on Drakus have been completely rebuilt. The aft deck received 2 layers of 1/2″ plywood with 2layers of 1708 fiberglass cloth in epoxy, and then topped with 4 layers of 1708 fiberglass in epoxy resin. The main deck received one layer of 1/2″ plywood with 1708 fiberglass and topped with 4 layers of 1708 fiberglass and epoxy. Deck glass wrapped to hull. Coaming and cockpit completely rebuilt. All plywood edges saturated and sealed with epoxy.

Rigging and Sails

Sails are hand made by Port Townsend Sails, Port Townsend WA. They include, Genoa, Drifter, Staysail, Main and Mizzen. Running rigging is color coded. Spars have been stripped and recovered. This includes acid washing, primer, and four coats of Oyster White. All new fittings include: stays, turnbuckles, toggles, chainplates, sheaves and winches. Winches are Anderson stainless steel self-tailing. There is one Anderson electric winch mounted on port side cockpit to bring in Jorden Drogue and Genoa.

Also included are three anchors, a 40Kg Rocna, and two FX 37s. The aft anchor is provided with a bronze arm on starboard that keeps the chain away from the hull. Chain stowage is inside the aft cabin via chain pipe which drains to engine bilge. The length of the main chain is 150′ with 160′ of 1 1/2″ 8 plait polyester rode with heavy grade thimble spliced on one end. Chain is in a divided locker at the bow. Large stainless steel hooks line the interior of the chain locker for holding line and fenders. Safety rigging is bare stainless wire on top and synthetic lower.

The interior is finished in the Pacific Northwest style of the period of custom fishing vessels. Portlights are Wilcox-Crittenden bronze 7″x14″ and Perko bronze 9″. Skookum 47 Cutter A+ Liveaboard and World Cruiser!

Boat REF# · 274774 Length · 470 Year · 1973 Construction · GRP Underwater profile · Long Keel Sleeping berths · 6 Engine · 1 x diesel 96hp, Ford Lehman 4D254 (1973) Lying · Kingston, WA, USA – Shown by Appointment

Brokers Comments: Skookum Marine has earned a reputation for building tough, long-lasting boats. This boat looks and feels incredibly solid and appears to have been well-cared-for by her owners throughout her life. The current owners have made a number of improvements and modifications to the interior over the last few years. These include renovating the head, updates to the galley, removing carpeting that covered the bulkheads in the cabins and replacing this with tongue-and-groove Douglas fir paneling, addition of storage compartments, replacement of batteries, new water heater, new marine toilet, stereo, and more.

This boat has a history of cruising and serving as a liveaboard for her owners, and it easy to see why. The interior is rich in natural wood and fine joinery, and offers exceptional headroom and beam. While aboard I found it notable that I never felt restricted, cramped, or confined in any space or on deck.

I visited the boat on a sunny summer day, and the cabin felt cool, pleasant, and airy with all of the portlights open. With it so pleasant to be inside on a summer day, I can only imagine how cozy it would feel while at anchor on a dark rainy day with the diesel stove running.

The topsides could use some work - new paint on the decks and varnish on the wood would really spiff up this boat.

I was quite impressed with this Skookum 47 sailboat. Picture yourself aboard: the possibilities for adventure with this boat are only limited by ones imagination!

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Boat: Nonsuch 33
me with some opinions and their reasons? Would a Skookum 53' make a good long-distance cruising for a couple in their late 50s? This would include US , , Europe/Med. and the Atlantic crossings that go along with those.

These are , heavy . Will we likely be happy with how they sail in lighter winds? (Not really light, I know that's a non-starter.)

I know of the Skookum reputation for toughness, but what about any cons? Every has them, but I think it might be nice to know them before owning one so the best compromise can be found.

Also, can anyone recommend any other boat which will meet our peculiar desire: to have a comfortable outdoor living area when in port. Too many cruising are designed for maximum space and the resulting cockpits remind me of empty hot tubs. We just can't see spending two to three years of our lives living in an empty hot tub.

I''m currently looking at buying a Skookum 34, designed by Ed Monk and built by Skookum Marine in Port Townsend, WA. It''s got a full keel with cutaway forefoot, displacement 20,600lbs, keel displacement 6,700lbs, OAL 37''6", draft 5ft, fiberglass hull, cutter rigged. I''m interested in any information on sailing characteristics, stability, known problems with the boat, anything that can help me find out more. Thanks.

Without knowing the water line length it''s tough to say but that''s one heavy boat. Won''t do well in anything under 15 knots.

skookum 45 sailboat

That is one wildly overweight, grossly underballasted boat. Without knowing much more than the numbers, this sounds like a boat that would be useless as a sailboat in light air and terrible in heavier conditions as a result of its poor stability (shallow draft, narrow beam, and tiny ballast ratio) vs its high drag. Jeff

It will go to weather like a haystack in any air and will not sit very well at anchor. Rock and roll baby! Dennis

Now here is one time when we can all agree(I think) that this boat seems to be heavy in the wrong places.I am a fan of full keel cruisers but there are good designs and bad in all types.I must try and find more info myself because these stats are really amazing for a fiberglass/any boat. You should look down to see if there are not tracks or treads attached.

I find all of your responses very interesting but not very helpful. Keep in mind that the Westsail 32''s displacement is 20,000lbs with a keel displacement of 7,000, draft of 5ft. Very comparable to the Skookum 34. It''s also known to be one of the greatest around-the-world cruising boats ever made. Seems like you''re jumping to conclusions pretty quickly for not having many facts.

Found one <a href="http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listing/pl_boat_full_detail.jsp?slim=broker&boat_id=1364451&hosturl=sas&&ywo=sas&&units=Feet&access=Public&listing_id=1012&url=&hosturl=sas&&ywo=sas&">here</a href>. LWL = 27'' 6"

The specs on the Skookum 34 are not out of line with a Westsail 32, Valiant 32, or even a Bob Perry Tayana 37 design. Similar displacement, similar draft, beam, etc. I own a 45'' custom wood Ed Monk cutter and it is a superb sailing boat even at 20 tons. It''s not a light air boat, but it did log 180 mile days when it was cruised offshore. Hawaii 3x, 15 years in the South Pacific, Mexico, and Alaska. Similar design with a cutaway keel, attached rudder, double ender, staysail cutter design. Ed Monk designed fishing, yachts, commercial, and military boats for Northwest and Alaska waters. His designs are overbuilt and have beautiful traditional lines. The Skookum yard didn''t build many boats and used all glass layup, really solid construction. If you do a Yachtworld or Google search you can see a selection of Skookums, including fishing trawlers designed by Monk. I''ve seen some Skookum 53 boats up close at the dock and they look very comfortable cruising boats, but I have not been inside one. The 34'' has a short waterline and the double ended stern reduces the amount of available storage. The forepeak area and stern areas will be compromised. It may be a storage hassle factor on a long voyage but for 1-2 people I think it may be perfect cruising boat. Have a good survey done and a test sail as part of making the offer. Most people skip the survey part because of the cost and regret it later. The hull will probably survey perfectly, but need work on systems upgrading.

Hi, I am waybad and have a Skookum 34. The spec that I saw quoted are wrong unless some one did somthing odd. The boat is 34 feet. beam is 10' 10 inch, ballast is 6,000lbs, displacement is 18,500 lbs, Water line is 27' 6 inches It draws 5 feet. It is a full keel, but does not have a cut away forefoot. It just sloops straight to the bottom of the keel at shallow slope. Which makes grounding much safer. Imersion is aprox 1000 lbs down per inch. When loaded down the W/L is 28' plus I have a inboard rig with a 50' mast from waterline. It is sloop rigged, but have the stay for a staysail. It sails well, its comfortable in the ocean, but is not a real light air boat, but it was not designed as a racing boat. I have to reef if winds are steady above 15 knots. I do not have a bow sprit, which I may add someday so I can drive it harder. I sailed in BC Johnston straight with 40 knots of wind triple reef main and storm jib and we were close hauled all day. It was a comfortable ride in 6 foot seas very close to geather over one, under one and threw one. It was a fun day. We were the only boat out their. We felt very safe in this solid built boat. It is heavy boat by todays standard. The stern wave slows this boat down a bit so I can only get 6.2 knots when everything is perfect. I have the original drawings. You can get them from Ed Monk JR. Good Luck. Later Waybad

1974 Skookum Ketch/Cutter Blue Water Cruising and/or Liveaboard Yacht

Price just reduced to $229,000

After cruising and living aboard for 12 years, it's time to move on and put my beloved blue water cruiser for sale. We started our cruise from Seattle on August of 98, spent over 2 years cruising up and down the Mexican coast and in through the Sea of Cortez then made the jump down to Central and South America and on to French Polynesia, the Northern Cook Island of Penrhyn and Christmas Island ending up in Hilo the day before Thanksgiving and settled in Honolulu in January of 2004 where I am now. She's given us wonderful adventures lasting 6 years with plenty of fabulous memories of beautiful exotic places, many areas that aren't even accessable except by boat. Dawnsbelle is  the "perfect" boat for a second home, chartering, off shore cruising, liveaboard; full or partime residence.

The minute we walked on board for the first time that was it, love at first sight, we knew this was going to be our new home. She's roomy, safe, totally self sufficient and can be handled by 2 people comfortably. She would be a great family boat as well since she has an incredible amount of living and storage space... or maybe you're thinking of chartering or just want a larger boat for visitors or family get togethers. Whatever your reason for a bigger boat Dawnsbelle is an attractive vessel.

Since we sold our house and all our material possesions I wanted to make sure when we moved on board we didn't feel at any time like we were "camping". We wanted to be sure we had all the comforts of home installed on board and we have made many improvements to the equipment on board. All the ammenities any home owner would expect but no yard work! I've included a description, the systems on board and some photos.

DawnsBelle is located in Hawaii on the Island of Oahu in the beautiful Ko'Olina Marina.

In subject line, be sure to write Skookum, yacht or boat so I don't delete your message as junk mail...

  4. Skookum 47, any experience or information?

Re: Skookum 47, any experience or information? That's sort of interesting to hear that the boat feels tender. The design specs would have it at a pretty respectable 40% ballast to displacement ratio. Perhaps the prior owner skimped on high quality ballast and ended up a bit under spec.
