About the boat: Serena is a Thompson 38 built 2005 in San Francisco, designed by Kiwi Steve Thompson. From this boat Steve went on to make a few developments and come up with the well known Stomp 38. Serena was campaigned by her previous owners on the East Coast of America, in 2018 they sailed the boat solo to NZ. Serena is a Tiller Steer, semi-displacement monohull with a rather long prod giving her some great downwind performance. Serena is new to the local scene and has a development path in the short handed arena. In the 2020 RNI Serna will be skippered by Josh Adams and Ryan Parkin

Name Josh Adams
Age 30
Have you done an RNI before? Yes in 2017 on my previous boat Vela Via. Fantastic experience completing the journey last time round!
Yacht Club SSANZ
Tell us a little about your sailing history/ background A lifetime of cruising around New Zealand and years spent racing dinghys.
What appeals most about doing the RNI? It’s a challenge at every turn. The opportunity to improve, learn the boat more and see how she goes when we get to stretch the legs a bit. It’s also a beautiful coast to sail around!
What are your essential food items during the race? KRAKEN
What will your meals be like during the race? Last time we did freeze dried and found it the most demoralizing part of the race. It all tastes like salty cardboard so this time opting for comfort food…. or as deluxe as you can go with a jetboil.
What’s your favourite point of sail and why? Cannot beat a send! 30 knots at around 155 TWA sounds good.
What do you like most about the boat you are sailing on? It seems to be quick when we get it right.
Describe your skipper/co-skipper in 5 words Sore back if bow mentioned.
What’s your favourite drink and why? KRAKEN – warms the body.
Will you be taking any luxury items on the race? – If so, what is it and why? My Makita vacuum cleaner, I hate mess.
What’s your biggest fear when you think about the RNI? Seeing East Cape again.
Who’s your biggest opposition and why? The other Thompson 38 Titanium, but looking forward to tight racing with what looks to be a very competitive fleet.
What sound system do you have on board? What’s likely to be playing? Fairly decent actually and a real battery eater so not sure how we manage that during the race. A lot of engine running to keep the Fusion blasting. It’ll be a cross between Black Betty, Jack Johnson and some of Ryan’s romantic French melodies.
It’s the night before the big race – how do you get your head in the game? Home for a good meal, read the kids some books and sleep like a baby!

RYAN PARKIN

Name Ryan Parkin
Age 43
Relationship to Co – Skipper Friend
Have you done an RNI before? On what boat and when? Yes on Spearhead, Elliot 1050 2017.
Yacht Club SSANZ, RNZYS, RAYC
Tell us a little about your sailing history/ background Sailed since I was a boy, Sabot, Sunburst, Starling, RNZYS Youth Performance Programme for 2 years, 10 years in France, sailing and working on race yachts. Recently been on the dark side, becoming an International Umpire. 40,000nm offshore experience.
What appeals most about doing the RNI Sailing, the challenge, the competition.
What are your essential food items during the race? Bananas.
What will your meals be like during the race? We have limited cooking facilities on the boat, food will be healthy military rations. Not my fault, Josh is a king on healthy food.
What’s your favourite point of sail and why? All points.
What do you like most about the boat you are sailing on? The size, lots of similar boats giving great competition.
Describe your skipper/co-skipper in 5 words Just need one word… Ralph.
Tell us about the training and buildup that you have been doing for this race both on and off the water? The boat is new for us, so lots of preparation in setting the boat up, updating the tired sails, learning the boat. On the personal side been pushing myself to the gym to build some core strength and sort out a few back issues.
What’s your favourite drink and why? Kraken Rum, it’s a perfect blend of danger.
Will you be taking any luxury items on the race? – If so, what is it and why? My pillow, a blow up airline pillow, it helps me get to sleep quicker, extra sleep is a great thing.
What’s your biggest fear when you think about the RNI? Losing.
Who’s your biggest opposition and why? Titanium – very much a sister ship, they’ve had the boat for a fair bit longer and seem to have it going really well.

Heaven can wait

Congratulations DD. I know how it feels to launch a new weapon. I hope all goes well. I'm REALLY interested to see what you're IRC ends up as. Seriously. Well done.

Bedford

Looks great. Is the mast in sections? It looks kind of short. Is this a standard feature for easy shipping? Cheers!

T22

LOL, I asked the same question this morning, then deleted it. 38' boat, 40' mast? Maybe it is cabin stepped, not keel stepped?? If it is the whole unit, makes shipping convenient.

There are two sections one on each side of the cradle, just looks like one from the angle. it is a keel step Rig is plenty bigger than 40ft

Looks sweet, DD. Can't wait for some on the water shots.

The raised topside/lowered cabin really looks cool, ya? You didn't bother with tipping the boat on it's side to get inside the width of the flat rack? Word we have is it costs plenty if your boat is outside the box. Good to see the 2 boats just about ready to go, can't wait to zip over the Ditch for a spin in Sydney. bloody awesome

TITANIUM MAKES HISTORY

Chris Skinner became the first person to win back-toback handicap honours when he and co-skipper Shane Bellingham won the SSANZ Round New Zealand Twohanded Race.

The pair circumnavigated the country on their Thompson 38 Titanium, taking 13 days and 22 hours to complete the four legs. They took line honours in the second and fourth legs, fighting off Damon Joliffe and Josh Tucker in Motorboat II (Elliott 10.5) who won both line and handicap in legs 1 and 3.

Titanium took control of the race on the second and longest leg from Mangonui to Stewart Island (930 nm), winning by a comfortable 22 hours on handicap. They finished 11 hours ahead of Motorboat II overall on corrected time after the final leg.

Skinner competed in the 2012 edition of the round New Zealand race on Truxton (Tiller 10.5), winning legs 2 and 4. For full results visit www.ssanz.co.nz/results/

Shaq Thompson names the Panthers rookie that has stood out most at training camp

Tim weaver | aug 16, 2024.

EAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY - AUGUST 18: Shaq Thompson #7 of the Carolina Panthers looks on during pregame warmups prior to an NFL preseason football game against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium on August 18, 2023 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

  • Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers have a growing youth movement going for their roster. While there are still some long-time vets to be found here and there like J.J. Jansen, Adam Thielen, Taylor Moton, Jadeveon Clowney and Shaq Thompson, for the most part this group is relatively inexperienced in the NFL and have only begun to scratch the surface of their potential.

One of the key young contributors for this team in 2024 is rookie linebacker Trevin Wallace out of Kentucky, who picked off four-time league MVP New York Jets QB Aaron Rodgers during yesterday's joint practice with the New York Jets.

That's not the first or the second time that Wallace has flashed this summer, though. In fact, Thompson says that Wallace is the rookie who has stood out most to him at training camp.

While Wallace is just getting started, Thompson's career is likely winding down. Entering his 10th season in the league, Thompson has appeared in 119 regular season games. He will become a free agent next year when his current contract expires.

Is the Warriors front office failing Steph Curry with the current roster build?

SACRAMENTO, CA - APRIL 16: Stephen Curry #30 of the Golden State Warriors looks on during the game against the Sacramento Kings during the 2024 Play-In Tournament on April 16, 2024 at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California. Entering the offseason, the Golden State Warriors’ front office identified the need for a more established second scorer next to Stephen Curry as a high priority, team sources said. The Warriors had Paul George and Lauri Markkanen atop a select wish list of realistically available and appealing players and chased both, in that order. They were willing to sacrifice a chunk of their first-round draft capital and a slice of their youth movement.

For separate reasons, they didn’t lock down a deal for either. The LA Clippers boxed them out of the George conversation. The Utah Jazz asked for every available pick and pick swap in the cupboard, plus multiple young players, for Markkanen. The Warriors were unwilling to unload the full unprotected boat .

Maybe Brandin Podziemski or the exact amount of firsts would’ve eventually been the swing factor in deeper Markkanen negotiations, sparking an internal debate. But it never reached that stage, team sources said. Markkanen signed an extension in Utah, and several sources from multiple inquiring teams said they believe, in retrospect, this was always the Jazz ’s intended outcome. Markkanen’s true availability was a mirage.

But reasons matter a whole lot less than results. In that regard, the Warriors failed to remedy their largest roster weakness. They not only didn’t acquire an established veteran scorer, but also indirectly motivated their second-leading scorer from last season, Klay Thompson , to leave the franchise, rerouting his departure into the sign-and-trade and free-agent additions of Kyle Anderson , Buddy Hield and De’Anthony Melton .

go-deeper

How Klay Thompson's 13-year run with the Warriors splintered so unceremoniously

This glaring flaw — a roster brimming in mid-tier depth but absent enough top-end scoring talent to relieve Curry’s workload and inject the Warriors back into fringe title contention — was put under a harsher microscope this past weekend. That’s when Curry, at 36, spectacularly shot Team USA to a gold medal in Paris, reinforcing his ability to still rise above on the largest stage when given a requisite opportunity.

Steve Kerr coached that team. Mike Dunleavy was in attendance. Draymond Green was roaring from the middle of the bleachers. Joe Lacob and Kirk Lacob followed from afar. The key Warriors’ stakeholders grasp Curry’s sustained greatness and, team sources said, there is an internal understanding that his current supporting cast can’t be considered a finished product if the 2025 NBA championship is believed to be a reachable goal.

Curry was in on the recruitment of George. Dunleavy keeps him in the loop on the options and ultimate personnel decisions. Curry hasn’t, team sources said, expressed any signs of panic or unrest. But there’s a choice of action or inaction in the coming months that’ll give a clearer hint about his long-term mindset.

Curry is eligible for a one-year, $62.6 million extension to his contract, which has two seasons and $115.3 million left. He flew back from Paris a few days ago and plans to unplug from basketball-related business for a few weeks. So any contract conversation isn’t expected to take place in the near future, league sources said. It’ll be entirely on Curry’s preferred timeline. The deadline to extend is Oct. 21.

From the Warriors’ side, it isn’t nearly as complicated as their more recent contract extensions ( Jordan Poole , Andrew Wiggins , Green, Thompson) or future ( Jonathan Kuminga , Moses Moody ). If Curry wants to tack on that extra year anywhere up to that max of $62.6 million, the Warriors would be willing. It’s a position they’ve maintained privately and publicly.

Steph Curry is eligible to extend an extra year this summer. Mike Dunleavy: “That guy, whatever he wants…Pretty confident he will be a Warrior for life.” Dunleavy also said the desire is to extend Kuminga/Moody pic.twitter.com/xjpglfz0qu — Anthony Slater (@anthonyVslater) July 12, 2024

The benefit to Curry is obvious: an extra season of security. He will turn 37 before he is extension eligible again — next offseason for up to two additional years. There’s always a risk that situations change and an offer on the table in October won’t necessarily be there the following August. He has two months to decide whether to lock in at $62.6 million for his age-38 season.

But there is flexibility and leverage in waiting. As this upcoming season materializes, Curry and the entire basketball world will get more information about the Warriors’ direction and the legitimacy of their quest to crack back open the title window while Curry still grips to his late prime. Do the younger players develop rapidly? Does Wiggins bounce back? Does Green stay out of the league’s crosshairs? Is the front office able to strike a significant in-season trade with the draft assets that remain in its pocket?

It’s easier to apply pressure — even in Curry’s tranquil style — with one season left on a contract rather than two. So Curry’s choice whether to commit to an extra year of team control before the October deadline is a notable signal of which way the wind might blow.

The Warriors believe they improved this summer, team sources emphasized, basing that partially on internal number models that gave a positive-value thumbs-up to the additions of Melton, Anderson and Hield. A few analytics-driven employees from around the league agree. One rival’s metric model had Golden State fourth in the conference. The Warriors’ 46 wins a season ago through turbulence stood only five back of the fifth spot ( Clippers , 51 wins).

But there are rational reasons to doubt. Curry played 74 games last season, his most since 2016-17. Can he repeat that? Green missed 27. Can he avoid repeating that? Then even if everything breaks right — the younger layer of the roster rises and the depth shines in the regular season for a sturdy playoff seed — does the ultimate flaw they tried and failed to correct (acquiring another 24ish-point per-game scorer) bite them in the playoffs anyway? If a second star hits the trade market, do they pay a steep price and finally close a significant deal?

Curry’s decision on a one-year extension comes before those answers, but it could provide a hint about how optimistic he is that they’ll trend in the Warriors’ direction.

Boat once owned by Jimmy Buffett up for sale, broker says

thompson 38 yacht

MONTAUK, N.Y. — "Parrotheads" around the world now have an opportunity to own a part of Margaritaville history.

SI Yachts , a luxury yacht dealer with offices in Florida and the northeast, has put the famous boat once owned by music icon Jimmy Buffett up for sale.

The sportfishing boat, LAST MANGO II, is reportedly located in Montauk, New York, and is listed for sale at an asking price of $999,000.

It was custom-built for Buffett before its mold was destroyed on purpose, ensuring that it would be one of a kind, according to SI Yachts.

"The owner of the boat was personal friends with Jimmy and bought it from him directly," SI Yachts broker Steve Messenger stated in a release. "It was custom built for Jimmy Buffett by Rybovich Spencer and when it was completed, he had the shipyard completely destroy the mold, so it could never again be copied."

SI Yachts said Buffett and LAST MANGO II put in nearly 5,000 hours of travel, making countless trips through the Florida Keys, Bahamas and the Hudson Canyon to fish with friends.

Messenger said the boat's engines have been re-manufactured with the top-end speed now at 35 knots and cruising speed at 24 knots.

The broker added the listing is the ultimate opportunity for Jimmy Buffett fans to "own something that was a big part of him and his life."

"Everyone knows about his love for the ocean, boating, fishing, and the whole lifestyle through his music," Messenger stated. "I can't imagine how awesome the feeling would be to crank up 'Volcano', with a cold drink in my hand, slow trolling in the Bahamas!"

Anyone interested in the boat can contact Messenger at 732-232-9581 or email him at [email protected]

Family and friends of 26-year-old Angel Snell gathered to honor her memory.

Back in the day was there ever an attempt to chamber the Thompson in .38 Super?

thompson 38 yacht

  • Add to quote

Would it have been doable? And would it have been a useful addition to the Nation's arsenal? I ask because I like the idea of the symmetry of it. We have the 1911 in .45ACP and the Thompson in .45ACP And we have the 1911 in .38 Super so it would be cool if there was a .38 Super version of the Tommy gun.

thompson 38 yacht

I read, years ago, of a 10mm Thompson caliber, but can not find the reference any more. Sent from my SM-G986U using Tapatalk

thompson 38 yacht

I've seen them in 10mm on GB, but haven't seen one in years.

thompson 38 yacht

"The Thompson platform was tested by several European nations early in 1922 and 1923. The only country interesting in buying a production run was Belgium. The Belgian Army was interested only if some “minor” changed could be made. These included the requirement for the gun ob chambered in 9mm Luger and to by styled more like a rifle. Auto-Ordnance turned to Birmingham Small Arms, an English arms company, and this new style of Thompson was created: the Model of 1926 in 9mm. BSA went on to created several variants of the Model 1926 in several different calibers including .45 ACP, .38 Super, 9mm Bergman, 7.63 Mauser, and .30 Mauser. " Rare and Historic Thompson Submachine Guns | Range 365

I believe the Thompson was even tried in .30-06 at one point. The Blish Lock proved to be a bit inadequate for something that powerful though. The advantage was that although the gun was heavy, the gun was balanced near the Center of Gravity so that it could be fired with one hand unlike most other rifle caliber guns. The Blish Lock went away very early on and I don't believe any modern replicas use it. - Ivan.

thompson 38 yacht

I knew I had read years ago that Thompsons were produced in 38 Super. A quick search reveals this cite from the wiki piece on .38 Super: "A small number of .45 ACP submachine guns were also made in .38 Super, such as the Ingram Model 6 and Thompson submachine gun " Here's another: In Boston T. Party's book "Boston's Gun Bible", he said that Elliot Ness used 1911's and Tommy guns in .38 Super. Still another: https://military-history.fandom.com/wiki/.38_Super Off topic, at least two of Huey Long's bodyguards carried Super 1911s, drilled hapless poor Dr. Weiss as many as 40 times. Some say he only punched the governor and the bodyguards shot Huey in the crossfire that followed. Bottom line, he needed killing. (Huey Long, not Dr. Weiss) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_Huey_Long#Shooting

thompson 38 yacht

There is a issue of Guns Magazine from late 50s that had article on Thompsons and pictures of some fancy models they were planning for civilian sales. The Sheriff’s Dept had a Thompson in 9mm. I don’t know what model it was, not military. This was in their possession from attempted Bank Robbery in 1946. It was more of trophy for Dept than a tool. We got a woman for sheriff who was crooked as they get. She was famous, even was on Johnny Carson show. Everyone knew that Thompson 9mm was valuable, including some older Deputies. Seems salesman came selling police equipment and traded a CTME rifle for the Thompson.

I don't know about .38 Super, but Auto Ordnance did make a prototype in .30 Carbine.

The Thompson was never made or proto in 30/06. However Col. Thompson did submit a rifle in 30/06 to Govt. trials. It lost out badly. Board picked the Garand.

Thank you everybody! I do know I could have just done a general internet search for the answer but I like asking questions like this on forums because there is the potential for such a wide range of responses. And that proved true again! You guys are awesome.
