Ferrari-Riva-Speedboat

On board with serial superyacht owner Piero Ferrari

“My dad was a car guy,” he says understatedly. Enzo Ferrari’s son is also something of a boat guy, as he tells Risa Merl, and fittingly has Riva very close to his heart...

For a man whose whole life is all about speed, Piero Ferrari knows how to take things slow. He speaks softly, at a calm, unhurried pace as he lounges, in a perfectly tailored Italian suit, in the saloon of the stylish new Riva 110' Dolcevita at the Monaco Yacht Show.

It’s a fitting place to meet, as his ties to the Ferretti Group , Riva’s parent company, run deep. Not only does Ferrari own a Riva Bahamas runabout and a Ferretti Custom Line Navetta 37 motor yacht, but he holds a 13.2 per cent stake in the Italian yacht builder, sits on the board, chairs its product development committee and is the vice-president of another company in the group, custom superyacht builder CRN . It is larger than the 10 per cent share he owns in the legendary car manufacturer with which he shares his name, and where he still serves as vice-chairman.

Though it’s the height of the Monaco show, Ferrari insists he’s merely here “for a vacation to see some boats, maybe have a few meetings, and then disappear into my home in Monaco”. His main residence is in Modena, Italy, near Maranello, home to the Ferrari headquarters.

The Navetta 37, called, appropriately, Race , is berthed in La Spezia and Ferrari uses it for summer sailing in Capri and for cruising further afield, to Croatia and Greece. “I love Capri and the Amalfi Coast – it’s an area famous for its good food,” he says. When on board, Ferrari relishes the simple pleasures of a relaxed cruising lifestyle. “You are travelling, but you don’t need to have luggage, you have everything with you. To see nature from the sea is a very different feeling that I love very much.”

The second and only living son of Enzo Ferrari, Piero was born in 1945, just two years before the very first Ferrari car , the 125 S, was introduced. He grew up with the company and watched as his father developed it into a true automotive empire.

“He never had time for vacations,” Ferrari says of his father. On the rare occasions that Enzo did take the family away for a holiday, it was to Rimini on the Adriatic Sea, “because my dad very much loved the seafood there”. But on these trips the family merely admired the sea from afar. Enzo never had much interest in yachts. “My dad was a car guy,” Ferrari says, smiling.

It wasn’t until he was in his early 20s that Ferrari discovered a passion for boats. “I was a young guy, and my first boat was a four metre Pirelli RIB with a 30 horsepower outboard – that was the beginning of my career as a boat owner,” he says. “Then I’d move up in size, metre by metre, finally all the way up to the Custom Line 37. I don’t remember how many boats I’ve had in my life, but it’s more than 20. I’ve had sailboats, fast boats like a Pershing , and now I’m back to a displacement boat. I like variety.”

Race was designed to meet Ferrari’s specific needs. “I had in mind to have that size of boat,” he explains. “It’s a very balanced concept of contemporary design, and it’s very functional.” He insisted that the yacht have large windows for maximum light and that it cruise comfortably, so a good deal of attention was paid to hull design and stability.

When it comes to yachting, Ferrari likes to throttle back. He has tried go-fast models such as Cigarette boats – “for an hour, no more” – but they’re not his passion, nor is racing around cans at sailing regattas. “I like to cruise,” he declares. “I love sailing, but give me time.”

Ferrari has spent most of his time as a yacht owner at the helm, captaining the vessels himself. Now that he has the Navetta 37, he has a captain but he still enjoys spending time on the bridge and poking around in the engine room, fascinated by anything connected to the technology and management of a yacht. If he’d had his way, he would have studied engineering. “I wanted to be an engineer, but my father pushed me to do economics. My mentality is more engineering, and I never actually had a job linked to economics,” he says. Though Ferrari didn’t initially study engineering, later in life he has been recognised for his work in the field, garnering an honorary degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Naples Federico II in 2004 and another in mechanical engineering from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in 2005.

Piero’s first job was working at Ferrari. This was no nepotistic appointment to management; he was put to work in the purchasing department, buying parts for racing cars. He credits this first job with teaching him about the importance of quality in parts and how to negotiate.

Carrying a name like Ferrari might seem a heavy burden, but Piero takes it in his stride – and appreciates the education his unique upbringing has given him. His business ventures have stretched beyond the automotive realm. He was president of Piaggio Aero Industries from 1998 to 2014 and was also a board member and vice-president of Banca Popolare dell’Emilia Romagna for a number of years. Today, along with his roles at Ferrari and Ferretti Group, he serves as chairman of the automotive engineering and manufacturing company HPE COXA.

“Everything I learned in Ferrari, I can use in other businesses,” he says. “And I’m still a 10 per cent owner of Ferrari. It’s now on the stock market, it’s a worldwide company, a recognised brand – but to me, Ferrari is my family.”

He owns eight of the company’s cars – “One was a gift from my father, one was specially made for me” – and is currently collaborating on Ferrari’s long-term vision. He forecasts that after 2022, 60 per cent of Ferrari cars will be hybrid. “Hybrid will be a larger part of Ferrari’s production. Hybrid gives you fuel economy and performance. And Formula One is the most efficient engine in the world, because it’s burning less fuel than a diesel engine, but with huge performance. This is the future of Ferrari.”

The key to design, meanwhile, is achieving a balance between tradition and innovation, and not going too far too soon, he says. “Steve Jobs introduced a touchscreen device in the 1990s. It was just a device, it was not in a mobile phone, and they lost a lot of money and Apple did terribly. That project failed. It was too far, too advanced for people to understand. They didn’t have the need for it yet.”

In a similar vein, Ferrari is wary of putting too much value in concept cars, which he says the motor shows make a big fuss over every year but none go into production. A balance of heritage and modernity is always on his mind, whether it comes to car or yacht design. “Tradition doesn’t mean that you have to always keep what you had in the past, but it’s important to have a clear idea of the heritage of the brand and the style,” he says. “Style is the number one thing that you have to pay attention to, because a Ferrari or a boat is not something that you buy because you have a need, it’s something that you have to fall in love with and think, ‘That’s beautiful. I want it. I want this boat.’ ”

He lets slip that the next boat he’s fallen in love with is going to be even bigger, the first ever Riva 50 superyacht, the biggest yacht the yard has ever built. It’s currently in build and due to launch in March 2019. “I love the Riva brand, I love the Riva style, and the details are a different taste from other yachts. So Alberto Galassi, the CEO of the company, and I decided that it was time to have a bigger Riva.”

This isn’t the first time that the Riva and Ferrari names have been uttered in the same breath. In 1990, a limited-edition Riva-Ferrari speedboat made waves. Only 30 hulls were built, and Piero still uses his on Lake Garda.

The best part of any of his myriad jobs is when he gets the chance to climb behind the wheel, whether it’s to test a new boat or drive a new Ferrari. “It’s most fun when they come and ask my opinion about the feeling of a new car – or a new boat. The launch of a new boat is a very special moment.” Ferrari admits, however, to no longer attending the launches of his own boats. Once, many years ago, before his days with the Ferretti Group, he attended a launch and “everything on the boat broke!” He’s concerned he might be a jinx.

Perhaps he’ll reconsider for the launch of his new 50 metre Riva, on which he plans to do more cruising and enjoy the chance to take his otherwise busy life at a relaxed pace.

In Piero Ferrari’s first ever interview with an American magazine , the son of Enzo Ferrari and Italian marque’s current vice chairman mentioned that yachts are one of his great passions, which is why he also serves as VP of yacht builders Ferretti Group. The Navetta 50, then, is the latest realization of Piero’s seafaring passion.

The 50-meter (164-foot) yacht is set to be the new flagship vessel under Custom Line, Ferretti’s bespoke branch. To cut down on fuel consumption, it’s made almost entirely out of aluminum. At a low-rev cruising speed, the Navetta 50 drinks up to 15 percent less fuel than a steel boat of the same size and volume.

According to the company, the four-deck design is distinct in that it revolves around the positioning of the master suite in the bow on the upper deck, where occupants revel in views offered by floor-to-ceiling windows and a private terrace complete with a sunset solarium.

In addition to the master suite, there are four guest cabins on the lower deck to accommodate 10 guests and nine crewmembers, including the captain.

Over 750 square feet of interior space aims to blend sophistication with sustainable materials, including 100-percent recycled natural leathers and eco-sustainable Alpi Lignum walnut paneling. The indoor dining room and bar flow into an outdoor area at the bow, which features a sun deck that can be customized wit ha Jacuzzi and second solarium.

Located aftward is a beach club touching the water’s edge and an outdoor private lounge on the main deck—the two exterior spaces are joined by a rectangular pool.

Construction on the Custom Line Navetta 50 begins this year before the yacht is officially presented in 2024.

Ferretti Yachts 500 Reviewed

  • By Phil Draper
  • Updated: April 28, 2021

Ferretti Yachts 500

When asked why he liked the desert so much, actor Peter O’Toole’s Lawrence of Arabia character answered, “Because it’s clean.”

I asked myself a similar question and generated much the same answer as to why I like the Ferretti Yachts 500.

The 50-footer’s profile has refined, balanced lines. The beauty is not so much about what’s there as it is about what’s not there.

Yes, all the appropriate features exist: There’s a raked-aft windshield; 136 square feet of flybridge with an aft-deck overhang, a single-seat helm station, a wet bar, booth seating, a table and sun pads; another sun pad on the superstructure forward; and 82 square feet of cockpit with a table and transom sofa. (That table converts to yet another sun pad, and there’s 67 square feet of swim platform.)

What’s missing is visual clutter. Elegance and timelessness are words bandied about too freely these days, but the Ferretti Yachts 500 has a design worthy of both.

The yacht is a creation of Ferretti Group’s strategic team, led by Piero Ferrari—who also just happens to be vice chairman of the automotive “prancing horse” legend that is Ferrari—and the group’s engineering department, with principal creative credits going to Milan, Italy-based Filippo Salvetti for exteriors and general arrangement, as well as La Spezia-based IdeaeItalia for interiors. The Ferretti Yachts 500 and the soon-to-splash Ferretti Yachts 1000 are IdeaeItalia’s first Ferretti projects.

Ferretti Yachts 500

The 500 has two interior-decor options. The version I was aboard had a bright Mediterranean vibe with light oak veneers—one a reconstituted surface with a fine, uniform grain and the other a coarse-grain gray. The other option is darker, warmer and more traditional with walnut.

Headroom varies from 6 feet, 5 inches to 6 feet, 7 inches across the aft deck, galley and salon. The cockpit and galley become like one space when the aft door is open and an adjacent half panel of glass is raised. There’s also a glass panel between the portside galley and part of the salon’s C-shaped sofa, a sensible protection from inevitable splashes. Another sofa is to starboard.

The bridge, also to starboard, is as comfortable as it is practical. A single bolster-cushioned helm seat addresses the console, which aboard this 500 had three Simrad displays: two optional 12-inch screens and one 9-inch monitor. The standard offering is one 9-inch display, plus the shifters/throttles and an optional joystick for docking. An opening window is adjacent to the lower helm.

Ferretti Yachts 500

Seas were lively off Italy’s coast when I got aboard, providing a great opportunity to see how this yacht performs when the going gets tougher. The backdrop shoreline was stunning. Porto Venere—along with neighboring villages Fezzano and Le Grazie; the three nearby islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto; and national parkland behind—has had a UNESCO World Heritage site designation for almost 25 years. The area is a worthy rival to the better known Amalfi Coast.

The Ferretti Yachts 500 was light on the helm and turned reasonably tightly. Twin 542 break-horsepower Cummins QSB 6.7 diesels reportedly deliver a top speed of 29 to 30 knots and a comfortable fast cruise around 24 to 25 knots. During runs on different headings and with the Humphree Interceptors set to autotrim mode, I registered just under and just over 30 knots—but only fleetingly. Most of the time, a speed of 27 knots plus a bit was all we could manage in the sloppy sea state.

A fast cruise around 24 knots sees the diesels spinning near 2,750 rpm, at which the total fuel burn is 45 gallons per hour. Allowing for a 10 percent reserve, there should be more than seven hours’ worth of run time, or about 170 nautical miles. Slow things to 1,500 rpm and just under 10 knots, and that same quantity of fuel delivers 325 nautical miles. The 500 I was aboard was a bit below half-load with six people, no tender, 50 percent fuel and virtually no water.

Ferretti Yachts 500

Like every Ferretti I’ve run over the years (and that’s quite a few), the 500 inspired total confidence. No creaking. No squeaking. These smaller Ferrettis are built at the brand’s Northern Italy hometown of Forli, which is around 45 miles to the southeast of Bologna and some 20 miles inland of the country’s east coast.

Belowdecks, the 500 packs in a lot thanks to V-boxes. The diesels are set far aft, virtually on top of the propellers. The standard layout has three staterooms and two showers; a two-stateroom version is available. The trade-off is the starboard-side twin bunk, mostly for more floor space in the forward VIP and much more in its en suite. Alternatively, that twin-bunk area can become a gym.

The 118-square-foot owner’s stateroom has a forward-facing queen berth, a 42-inch TV on the bulkhead, a two-seat sofa to port and windows with portholes. Despite the restricted height above the berth, there’s plenty of headroom where it’s needed: at the foot of the berth and to each side.

Ferretti Yachts 500

A crew cabin is an option with a single berth, head, sink, wet head and air conditioning. This cabin is a little squeezed between the engine room and transom; without the cabin, the space is a lazarette. Hatch access is under the aft-deck sofa’s seat cushion to port.

An optional hydraulic swim platform with 880-pound capacity can accommodate a Williams Turbojet 285 or 325 tender, depending on whether there’s an optional gangway.

The Ferretti Yachts 500′s unsullied lines, admirable performance, and upscale decor and layout should make the yacht a worthy successor to the retired 450 and 550 models that previously defined the entry point of the builder’s motoryacht portfolio. If upcoming models have the same look and feel, then Ferretti Yachts is on a solid heading.

Ferrari California Worth The Hype?

ferrari california

Since its release in 2009, the Ferrari California has not been getting as much attention as we’d expect. Having made basic cameo appearances on shows like Entourage, the Ferrari California is not having its big moment despite being the first retractable hardtop Ferrari has designed. So why has this masterpiece been overshadowed by the mighty F430 and 599GTB? Well, it seems that no one had the answer, so we decided to go and test drive the car for ourselves and see if the car is really not living up to its expectation.

blue ferrari california

When looking at the styling of the car, it is quite beautiful and not similar to any other Ferrari previously released, it is not a remake or a predecessor to any other F1 model and therefore creates a whole new platform for Ferrari. The car is much larger than it looks in pictures and has nice wide stance to it, the fender flares follow the contours of the car beautifully. The rear end is by far my favorite, carrying some great F430 lights in a single manner but also including a very aggressive rear diffuser and quad tailpipes on top of one another a la Mansory style. The front of the car is also very attractive with some great looking headlights but the center of the car is not so much due to a Ram Air system straight in the middle of the hood, which might work on darker colors but does not on lighter cars.

ferrari california rear

The interior of the Ferrari California is stunning as you would expect from Ferrari and rather gadget full unlike what you would expect in other GT cars like the F430 which leads you to believe that Ferrari attempted to make this car a cruiser rather than a track car, which also explains the luxuries found in this car like the retractable hardtop, navigation systems and heated seats, all which come standard. The leather interior and seats are pretty much straight out of the F430, and are available in just about any color combination. Trunk space is almost non existent when the top is down and has less room than a Corvette with the top up, but keep in mind that regardless of the fact that Ferrari made the California more practical, it is a Ferrari and not a Lexus, so trunk space is most likely not a priority to the market share.

The dynamics is the main area that hurts the Ferrari California, it simply is not a GT or F1 car, it drives more like an Aston martin V12. It is fast getting to 60 under 4 seconds and smooth due to a 7 speed F1 but does not create the same race feeling that the F430 creates, which makes me question what Ferrari was trying to do with this car. It seems like it would be direct competition to their Maserati Gran Turismo Cabrio slated to come out early next year. It seems as though Ferrari should have left a Maserati badge on this one, as the ride is not true to the racing heritage we have come to expect from Ferrari. The California is nice, but simply being catered to the wrong crowd which in essence is the reason it is not selling well. Especially with a $200,000+ price tag.

More about the Ferrari California

The Ferrari California might just be the firm’s most radical model. It’s the first Ferrari road car to have a front-mounted V8 engine, the first to have a dual-clutch gearbox and the first Ferrari to follow the current trend of having a fully retractable hard roof that electrically folds into its boot. It took modern Ferraris into new realms of quality with performance, and is, in our opinion one of the best Ferraris ever to drive.

The combination of the direct injection 482bhp V8 engine and a seamless gearchange means this ferrari can blast from 0-60 in just 3.8 seconds and onto a top speed approaching 200mph!! Handling is taken care of with the very latest electronic damping and braking by new generation carbon ceramic brakes.

Revel in the sumptuous interior whilst listening to the bellow of the mighty V8 Ferrari engine, it really is an experience of a lifetime!
