Boat crash kills one as search continues for two people missing off Connecticut coast

The Coast Guard is leading a search and rescue mission for two young men after a boat slammed into a jetty at the mouth of the Connecticut River killing one person.

Nine people, all in their mid-20s and 30s, were aboard the vessel as it plunged into a Harbor One Marina jetty in Old Saybrook at a high rate of speed, before crumbling into pieces Monday evening, according to the authorities.

Police and fire services from the North Madison area responded around 9:15 p.m. to the Labor Day wreckage in the old coastal town 30 miles from New Haven, Connecticut .

Five women and one man were rescued and rushed to hospital – including the boat operator who is believed to be in critical condition.

One person was confirmed dead and pulled from wreckage, according to local news station WFSB . Three victims were not wearing life jackets, according to CNN . The name of the deceased victim has not been released.

Two men in their twenties were still unaccounted for, as of Tuesday morning. The Independent has contacted Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection with a request for more information.

“The search remains ongoing,” agency spokesman Will Healey told The Independent.

Goshen Fire Department deemed the crash as a mass casualty incident, with multiple passengers ejected from the boat. Upon arrival, the single motor boat was half submerged – yet still floating, Healey said.

The boat was inflicted with “significant damage” after it struck a break wall.

Helicopters and boats were deployed by the Coast Guard , with extended support from local search and rescue teams to bolster rescue efforts until about 2.30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

After a brief hiatus as the cover of darkness fell, the search continued at 7 a.m. A state police dive unit was expected to arrive at 10 a.m., with assistance from critical care transport service Life Star, to assist still in the search for the two missing men as of Tuesday.

“From what we’re seeing from evidence, early stages, you know, we’re hoping for the best, but at this point, it’s most likely going to be a recovery,” Captain Keith Williams of Deep said in a statement.

A video from Tuesday morning showed the wreckage of the mangled boat being removed from the water.

Another Boat Left Abandoned And Sinking On The Chicago River — And It Could Be There Awhile

WEST LAKEVIEW — An apparently abandoned boat that was tied up to the bank on the North Branch of the Chicago River sank after weeks of idly floating.

The boat — named Toy Box — was first seen in late July by a handful of observers who work on and near the North Branch.

Greg Fairbanks, who works with the Chicago Electric Boat Company, said he and his coworkers noticed the boat more than a month ago. Over the next week or so, the boat slowly moved from one side of the river to the other but was clearly abandoned, Fairbanks said.

“It slowly got moved under the bridge, and one day we went aboard just to make sure there were no souls aboard,” Fairbanks said.

When Fairbanks was on the boat, he noticed a lot of tools, equipment and other materials. The boat’s cabin was completely filled with water.

“It wasn’t completely trashed, but it was underwater,” Fairbanks said. “It was clearly sinking, and the only thing keeping it up was that it was tied up.”

A few weeks later, Fairbanks and the rest of the crew noticed the boat had been dragged alongside the rocks underneath the Western Avenue bridge. He figured some locals somehow moved it to hang out and party on the boat.

Sometime in mid-August, Fairbanks saw some guys working with a generator to lift the boat off of the rocks and out of the water.

“They managed to get it up off the rocks, brought it back under the bridge again and then tied it off facing the opposite direction — which is where it is now,” Fairbanks said.

Nick Wesley, executive director of Urban Rivers, saw a similar timeline from his time on the river this summer.

Wesley called the Coast Guard on Aug. 7 to report the boat abandoned.

“They were concerned about it, obviously, mostly being sure that no one was on it,” Wesley said. “Then we saw it again on Aug. 15 and we saw it had been moved and was fully upright.”

After a few days of heavy rainfall, Fairbanks was on the river again when he noticed Toy Box had almost completely sunk.

“It is extremely unusual to come across sunken boats in the river system these days,” Margaret Frisbie, executive director of Friends of the Chicago River, said in an email. “There’s been one slowly rotting away adjacent to Clark Park on Chicago’s North Side for ages. There was a boat someone used to live on that sank in one of the slips on the South Branch and then one that sank in the North Branch Canal near Chicago Avenue years ago. Those are all the ones I can think of in the last 20 years.”

When a boat’s owner can’t be found, which agency or company removes it can be a game of hot potato.

The U.S. Coast Guard typically handles boats abandoned at marinas or by the lake.

Smaller abandoned boats by the side of rivers are technically inland and fall to the Environmental Protection Agency to tackle , even though the agency has little oversight of maritime issues.

Field officials with Chicago’s EPA office did not return phone calls Tuesday afternoon.

In these cases, the Coast Guard will usually investigate to find the owner of the boat and figure out what kind of salvage needs to happen, Lt. Junior Grade Santiago Tamburini of the U.S. Coast Guard said.

“On our end, we make sure that at least our notification of a hazard to navigation is still current to make sure nearby boaters are safe and can expect to see it as they transit through there,” Tamburini said. “We obviously, sometimes can’t do much without the owner first having an opportunity to handle it directly. And obviously, if that avenue doesn’t work, we step in and work with salvage companies to have it removed.”

Tamburini, who works at the Coast Guard’s Milwaukee office, said Chicago has seen an uptick in abandoned boats this summer, although he couldn’t pinpoint why that is exactly.

“It could be due to boater error, weather conditions, conditions on the river itself at any given point; there’s no specific pattern as to why it’s happening,” Tamburini said. “Boats break down all the time and take on water, and just like any summer, the traffic goes up immensely, especially in Chicago.”

Wesley has noticed a few more boats left abandoned on the South Branch of the river this summer as well.

“Normally, the boats are too big to move to begin with, or it’s a small, crappy boat that nobody wants to go after anymore,” Wesley said.

The Coast Guard is aware Toy Box has sunk deeper into the river, but it does not have a definitive timeline of when the boat will be removed or how, Tamburini said.

“Because there are so many, especially in the Chicago area, between the river and some in the lake, there is an amount of work that all these salvage companies are doing and trying to get paid for what they’re doing by the owners,” Tamburini said. “That’s why you might see some boats still there and not salvaged properly just yet.”

Salvages similar to the one Toy Box may require could cost taxpayer money. In these instances, the state’s EPA office will typically call the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, which has a procedure to remove boats if there’s proof it’s “impeding traffic or navigation.”

A marine salvaging company must be contracted for the job. It requires a diver to fasten the boat with “gigantic inflatable pillows,” which pump air into the boat to raise it back up above water.

Removing an abandoned boat could cost taxpayers thousands of dollars if a state agency has to hire a salvaging company.

“Where it sits now is basically where it’s going to remain until someone brings out the heavy equipment and lifts it out of the water,” Fairbanks said. “Until then, it’s just going to sit.”

U.S. fights against Russian election interference

The U.S. has accused Russia of using its state media to influence the American presidential election and announced a broad effort to push back on the Kremlin’s plans to sway voters. The Kremlin’s campaign seems to favor Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris, seeing him as more skeptical of continued U.S. aid to Ukraine, intelligence officials said.

The attorney general, Merrick Garland, yesterday announced the indictment of two Russian employees of RT, the state-owned broadcaster, and the takedown of a Russian malign influence campaign known as Doppelganger. RT used a company in Tennessee to spread thousands of pro-Kremlin videos on social media.

The U.S. is planning more sanctions, indictments and seizures of web domains that it says the Kremlin uses to spread propaganda and disinformation about Ukraine. But it’s not just Russia: Iran has become one of the top threats in the disinformation game, U.S. officials and experts say.

Here’s what else to know: TikTok said that it would add more content about media literacy and how elections work. It will also increase security requirements for verified accounts belonging to American politicians.

A damning final report into the Grenfell Tower fire

Seven years after 72 died in a blaze at Grenfell Tower, a public housing building in West London, a public inquiry has blamed unscrupulous manufacturers, a cost-cutting local government and reckless deregulation for the disaster.

The 1,671-page final report painted a damning picture of a Conservative-run local council that approved the widespread use of cheap flammable cladding that suppliers knew should never have been used in a high-rise building.

Context: The disaster was Britain’s worst residential fire since World War II and has become emblematic of the hazards of deregulation and of the persistent social inequality in Britain’s capital.

Zelensky plans a major government reshuffle

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine laid out plans for a significant reshuffling of his cabinet . Half a dozen senior officials offered their resignations yesterday, and a list of nine candidates for top cabinet positions was released last night.

Zelensky’s overhaul comes at a precarious moment in the war. Russian attacks across Ukraine have increased , killing dozens over the past week. And Ukrainian forces are still trying to maintain control of territory that they have seized in western Russia now that their incursion into the Kursk region has slowed.

Context: Zelensky’s announcement did not appear to signal fundamental shifts in domestic or foreign policy, but might suggest he’s planning for a “new phase of the war,” some analysts say. But some critics are worried that such changes could further concentrate power in Zelensky’s office, depending on who is named to fill the posts.
